Josh Dye “Besides perfectly fitting the cliché and meeting my wife, one of my highlights was going on a mission trip with friends to Vietnam and then leading a mission trip to Vanuatu the following year and making a difference in those people’s lives.”

“With its small class sizes and practical opportunities to get involved, Avondale punches above its weight. If you embrace the experience and work hard, you never know where you could end up. Avondale also offers countless opportunities to make a difference in the world around you.”

Deciding to go to Avondale really was a no brainer. They had the course I was interested in studying and offered an environment to socialise and network with people who held similar religious beliefs to myself. After already completing a mechanical trade I was keen for a career change and was eager to learn anything and everything about the business world and Avondale was the perfect environment to learn.

| The Sydney Morning Herald - Journalist, writes daily news stories across a variety of topics with his articles appearing online and in the newspaper.

I studied a Bachelor of Business with a major in Human Resource Management and a minor in Accounting, graduating in 2016.

| Australian Union Office for the SDA Church - Internship in Accounting

I arrived at Avondale in 2011 to study a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communication and International Poverty and Development Studies. I enjoyed the small class sizes and opportunities to get involved on-campus. During my time at Avondale, I edited the student magazine and led two volunteer trips to Mongolia and the Solomon Islands with One Mission. Graduating with a Distinction in 2013, I went on to complete my Honours degree at UTS and launch my career in the humanitarian and media industries.

With so many individual and team sports available there is something for everyone, no matter what skill level.

Blessing others in the Philippines Dathan Tuaoi Our mission trip took us all the way to the Philippines where we were tasked with serving the Aeta people of the Zamabales province in San Marcelino. Being my first mission trip I was super keen the entire time leading up to the trip! From the fundraising efforts to the small meetings and briefings for our team, the excitement of it seemed to grow everyday. The Philippines has always been high on my bucket list of places to go and so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to experience what the world has to offer. More so, what inspired me to join the team was the concept of service. Service in the local community is a passion of mine, but service that expands beyond that was not as familiar. Giving it a good go to inspire others in the place of our mission and hopefully gaining some perspective along the way were my two greatest goals upon joining. The trip was everything I could’ve hoped for and more. I found that prior to the trip I would become too busy focusing on the change that we were going to make in the community and the blessing they’d receive. I felt that we were going to make a change and while I’m sure the team did, I believe the biggest impact was on us. The humility and kindness of the people was unlike anything I’ve experienced before. I truly believe their attitudes alone were more of a blessing than any work I could have done in my time there. Although many in the community were not Christians, it was truly amazing to see the likeness they have to Jesus and his character. I learned many things over the trip. Things that challenged my way of thinking and others that strengthened my connection with God. The most important lesson I learned was to be content. Jesus was always content with what He had and put the needs of those around Him before His own welfare at all opportunities. This mission trip has opened my eyes to this lesson. 100% yes, I would do it all over again if I could! 200% yes, I would do another mission trip to the Philippines!

Agents of change at the University Scholars Leadership Symposium Craig Louwen Going to the University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) in Kuala Lumpur was such an incredible experience. I wanted to learn more about leadership, how to become a better leader, learning the tools for leadership, as well as learning about current world events through the eyes of leading humanitarians from around the world. Another goal was to create connections with people from all around the world to be able to collaborate with others to help change and solve global issues. We were lucky to hear from speakers from around the globe, including the Prime Minister of Malaysia, his Minister for Education, Presidents of University of Kuala Lumpur, the National University of Singapore and a few people who are out there doing the best for the world. This symposium was an amazing time for learning. It encouraged me to be bolder in making a change for the betterment of society. Leading in ways that will be efficient and effective in making the world a better place. Now it is time for me to put it into practice to start small, by helping Avondale to become a better place for its students as well as leading the students to better the community. An amazing moment occurred on our ‘service day’ during the symposium. Our group went to an indoor fun park. We met refugee children from a local school. It had come to lunchtime and I was going around helping out where I could. I was pulled aside by one of our leaders who told me there were a couple of refugee children who had lost their assigned buddy and asked if I could take them around for the rest of the day. It was at this moment that I met three amazing girls who’d fled from their home nations to now live safely in Malaysia. Over the next few hours, I was able to get to know these girls, playing basketball and various games to allow them moments to just be kids. Although it was only a short few hours, it was a time of uninterrupted joy, for both them and me, an experience I will never forget.

Getting involved in service initiatives at Avondale is also a great way to travel the world and make new friends.

LIFESTYLE MEDICINE It is well recognised that practicing healthy lifestyle habits can prevent many of the diseases that kill the vast majority of people. The Graduate Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine and Graduate Certificate in Lifestyle Medicine courses are designed to meet the shifting demands in health care towards a paradigm that includes lifestyle-based therapies. Major areas of study include: food as medicine, exercise as medicine, and psychosocial considerations for the promotion of health. It is well recognised that practicing healthy lifestyle habits can prevent many of the diseases that kill the vast majority of people. For example, over 90% of type 2 diabetes, over 80% of heart attacks and about one third of cancers, are preventable. Over the past few decades, a growing body of evidence is showing that not only is a healthy lifestyle effective for preventing disease, it can also be used to manage, and in some instances, treat established conditions. Lifestyle is medicine! This has led to the emergence of the field of “Lifestyle Medicine”, which is defined by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine as “the use of lifestyle interventions in the treatment and management of disease”. Lifestyle Medicine seeks to treat the causes of chronic disease, which include: poor nutrition, physical inactivity, substance abuse, stress, environmental factors, and even issues relating to identity and meaning. Hence, Lifestyle Medicine is broad and comprehensive in its scope. It is widely accepted that Lifestyle Medicine will become increasingly relied upon in the future to combat the burgeoning rise in chronic diseases.

Theology Make practical ministry come alive. The Master of Arts (MA) is a coursework degree designed to provide postgraduate education in the areas of biblical studies, theology or pastoral leadership. It provides an opportunity for pastors, chaplains and others who meet entry requirements to upskill in order to be better equipped for professional practice and service. A pastoral leadership specialty will broaden the knowledge and skills of students in the areas of leadership, discipleship and contextual missional theology. Students will construct a biblical framework of leadership before engaging with contemporary theories, methodologies and applications in their selected area of study. A theological and biblical studies specialisation provides the opportunity to learn the research, analytical and communicative skills which are key to wrestling with contemporary challenges faced by the Christian church. The specialization focuses on deeper biblical and theological engagement to prepare students for either more effective professional practice, or further study. Accreditation The Master of Arts course is accredited under Avondale’s self-accrediting authority, within the terms of the Australian Qualifications Framework, and is nationally registered with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). In 2014 Avondale was granted self-accrediting status by TEQSA.
