This exciting development will attract new students to Avondale Conservatorium and uniquely targets music teachers already working in the profession who desire to upgrade their skills and/or achieve a formal qualification.

Certificate IV in Music Studio Teaching General Information Purpose of the Course • To equip self-employed, freelance music teachers with the musical, theoretical and pedagogical skills to teach beginnerlevel instrumental/vocal learners • To provide self-employed, freelance music teachers with formal recognition of their vocational role • To train freelance music teachers to deliver one-to-one music lessons to beginner-level instrumental/vocal learners • To prepare freelance music teachers to facilitate beginnerlevel music learners to sit examinations • To develop freelance music teachers’ skills to improve the musicianship, creativity & technical capabilities of beginnerlevel music learners • The outcomes of this course meet the music teaching industry need to better equip private music teachers to train and prepare beginner-level instrumental or vocal learners.

There is no other specific training currently available in either a training package or an accredited course to meet this need.

Qualification Level • Certificate IV AQF level 4 • Graduates at this level will have theoretical and practical knowledge and skills for specialised, skilled work as an instrumental or vocal music teacher for learners at beginner levels.

• Graduates at this level will have broad factual, technical and some theoretical knowledge of teaching beginner-level music learners.

• Graduates at this level will have a broad range of cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply a range of methods, tools, materials and information to: ° Complete routine and non-routine activities within a music instructional context ° Provide and transmit solutions to a variety of predictable and sometimes unpredictable elements within the context of a one-to-one instrumental or vocal music lesson at beginner level • Graduates at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, judgement and limited responsibility in known or changing contexts and within established parameters.

• To achieve this, graduates need to have a broad factual and theoretical knowledge of: administrative skills to manage a music studio; a variety of music instructional strategies; a working knowledge of educational applications of music technology; the ability to transfer skills and knowledge of instrumental and vocal performance and musicianship; a thorough knowledge of beginner music teaching literature and different learner characteristics.

Admission Criteria Entrants to the Certificate IV in Music Studio Teaching must: • Be over 18 years of age; and • Have attained a minimum of a B/Credit at 7th grade practical exam level (Australian Music Examinations Board or equivalent) on the relevant instrument or voice; and • Have attained a minimum of a Pass at 4th grade exam level in music theory, musicianship or music craft (Australian Music Examinations Board or equivalent); and • Meet the requirements for working with children and in the relevant Australian State/Territory. i.e. Current WWC

Entrants should have: • A high level of music literacy levels – sufficient to interpret music scores, chord sheets and prepare written reports and assignments • Numeracy and literacy skills at least equivalent to those specified by Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). For example: Reading and writing - The student should be able to: • Read and comprehend information presented in fairly complex texts; and • Select and apply the procedures and strategies needed to perform a range of tasks after reading appropriate texts.

Oral communication - The student should be able to: • Use and respond to language around music as a subject matter; and • Give clear sequenced instructions and information relating to music skill acquisition Numeracy and mathematics - The student should be able to: • Deal easily with simple and compound music time signatures Students seeking entry to this course will be subject to a music audition and interview process to determine their suitability. Music auditions on the relevant instrument or voice may be submitted via CD/DVD, or may take place on campus at Avondale College of Higher Education. Instrumental and voice auditions will need to demonstrate a minimum standard of 7th grade practical exam level (Australian Music Examinations Board or equivalent). Two pieces of contrasting styles will be required.

Delivery Modes The Certificate IV in Music Studio Teaching will be delivered online by distance learning in either full-time or part-time mode, in order to accommodate the needs of the students.

Online delivery and online group forums will be punctuated with a significant amount of self-directed learning. It is anticipated that this will equate to a split of two-thirds facilitated learning and onethird self-directed learning.

Online instructional methods that may be used include: • • • •

Audio & video demonstrations eLearning modules Group forums or discussion Interactive online tools included in Avondale’s learning management system (Moodle), such as quizzes, wikis and journals • Reading materials The aim of the course is to provide the students with the essential knowledge and skills to be able to effectively teach instrumental or vocal music lessons to beginner music learners.

To facilitate this aim the students will be required to submit video evidence of one-to-one music teaching work in appropriate music settings.

Resources The resources required for each unit are outlined in the relevant “Assessment conditions”.

The course delivery requires access to: • A computer, word processing application and a reliable internet connection for uploading material • A functional music studio, which may be a suitably equipped private room, a school classroom, a music teaching room or home music-teaching studio • Appropriate recording equipment for video assessments and uploading to the Internet

MUSTBT003 Teach beginner instrumental or vocal techniques This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge necessary for teachers delivering instrumental or vocal music lessons to effectively teach instrumental/vocal technical concepts, evaluate technical performance, solve technical problems and sequence technical concepts. The focus of the unit is on the strategies for teaching motor skills not on the actual specialised motor skills. Participants will apply their own technical knowledge as applied to their instrument.

They are engaged for specific projects and are responsible for promoting themselves to potential clients, negotiating their own contracts and managing their business affairs.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement individual or collaborative copyright arrangements including sourcing copyright information, gaining clearance to use other people’s material, protecting material from unauthorised use and applying copyright notices for creative works.

It applies to individuals who work under supervision with some responsibility regarding the planning and completion of work tasks.

This unit applies to people working in a wide range of areas in the music industry, including music performance, composition, private music teaching, music business and sound production. It is particularly applicable in contexts where people need to incorporate new business models and emergent trends and technologies into their work practice. This level of specialist work is usually undertaken with limited guidance and specialists could also be responsible for mentoring others on the job. This unit focuses on Music Technology as applied to Music Studio Teaching including music notation applications, aural development applications and music sight-reading applications. Online music studio management software will be included.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow work health and safety (WHS) requirements in the creative industries. It applies to those who are required to identify their individual WHS responsibilities and implement procedures to work safely in various creative industry work contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions Entry Requirements Q. Can I do this while attending high school?

A. No. The course is primarily is for teachers currently teaching with no qualification/accreditation or music graduates who have not undertaken pedagogy studies in their degree but wanting to undertake a comprehensive study into pedagogy for music studio teaching.

Q. What would qualify for ‘equivalent’ in the pre-requisite?

A. There are number of options that would satisfy. They include 1. A credit attainment in the equivalent Trinity or ABRSM practical exams 2. A demonstrated successful teaching result over a period of time where the applicant has covered a wide range of styles and grades.

It is best that at the time of application the candidate includes on the Application Form as much details as they see fit to demonstrate their expertise in performance. This is also applicable to the theory component.

Q. Do I need a Working with Children Check (WWCC) or equivalent?

A. Yes. It is now law that music teachers require a working with children check when teaching music lessons. During the course some of the submitted videos for assessment will undoubtedly include children and therefore it is mandatory that you are compliant with the statutory requirements of your state. Proof will be required at the time of application.

Q. Can I apply online for this course?

A. Yes, however the music audition has to be submitted via YouTube or a downloadable link to the file on a cloud based server.

Q. Where is Avondale College of Higher Education?

A. Avondale College of Higher Education is situated on Freemans Drive Cooranbong, NSW. It is a 5 minute drive off the M1 at the Morisset exit.

Q. Is the course totally online or will there be some residential component?

A. The whole course will be delivered online. There is no requirement for you to attend a residential component of the course. You will have the opportunity to ‘meet’ other students through Discussion groups and Forums using Moodle, Avondale’s learning management system.

Q. What will be the expectation of additional course materials?

A. Links will be provided for much of the reading material.

Opportunities will be available to borrow E Books from Avondale Library.

Q. Will I need a computer?

A. Yes. A computer is an integral part of any online course.

Students will be expected to know how to use web browser, word processing software, and video recording apps from mobile devices or computer and simple audio recording software. At one point the student will be looking at music notation software (Finale/Sibelius/Notion/Dorico).

Q. Will I need a student or students to undertake this course?

A. Essentially yes. Not all units require students however.

Submissions that require video submissions of lessons or part thereof, students will be essential to complete the required task.

Q. Is it possible to access a VET Student Loan for this course?

A. No, at Certificate IV level it does not qualify.

Q. Is it possible to complete the Certificate IV part-time?

A. Yes. A recommended course plan is available for applicants wishing to spread the course over 2 years part-time.

Q. If I need to extend a part-time enrolment to beyond 2 years is it possible?

A. This will require permission from Avondale and the Course Convenor.

Q. What is the main difference between a VET qualification and a Higher Education award?

A. In simple terms a VET certificate/diploma is a competency- based course focusing on workplace tasks and the knowledge required to accomplish them. The outcome for the applicant will be either ‘competent, or ‘not yet competent’. This is different when compared to Higher Education awards where graduates will receive a graded outcome i.e. pass/credit/distinction/high distinction.

Q. Are there opportunities to be granted credit through Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)?

A. In simple terms there is an opportunity to explore credit through RPL however it will be on a case by case basis and will be at the discretion at the Course Convenor.

Q. How will the course be delivered?

A. Modules will be made available and organised on a weekly basis, however delivery will be asynchronous. i.e there will not be live online discussion or delivery. This is crucial when applicants have such diverse working hours in their private studios or similar. You will have the luxury of working in your own time but able to participate in online discussion groups.

Q. If enrolled part-time can I do the units in any order?

A. No. This is because there is a sequence as some units are dependent on knowledge acquired from a previous unit. A prescribed pathway is available for applicants to follow as it also keeps in consideration the workload across 4 semesters.

Q. How do I work out my commitment re hours required per semester?

A. The duration of each unit has a suggested nominal number of hours that would be needed to successfully complete that unit.

Some of the units have less hours than others by the very nature of content of respective units. For example if you choose 3 units and the expected commitment is 140 hours for the semester, then to estimate a weekly expectation take the total hours and divide by 13 (each semester is 13 weeks long). A realistic expectation is 10.75 hours per week.
