AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION AMBASSADOR to NASA A passionate Science teacher, engaging school kids through practical innovative techniques.
JACOB WINDLE His story Jacob Windle is an inspiring Science teacher engaging his students with practical and innovative methods, making science fun. Working with many indigenous communities, Jacob uses hands-on techniques, allowing those whose second or third language is English, the ability to learn without the added challenge of writing it down. Jacob’s achievements saw him participate in astronaut simulations as part of the NASA space camp for which he was selected to attend. At the school where he teaches, the students’ answer to the question ‘What’s your favourite subject?’ is always a resounding: ‘Science’, which is a rare change to the usual answer: ‘Sport’. It is due to Jacob’s ‘let’s blow something up, let’s destroy something and see what we can learn from it’ approach that gives students their understanding of why things happen the way they do. “It’s no longer a mystery,” says Jacob.
His achievements | Won a 2016 National Teacher Award for innovation, leadership and development. | Chosen to attend the NASA Space Camp in Alabama, USA in 2017.
From Jacob “Learn; do something that challenges you so that you can pass it onto the kids. I want to know what the kids are into because they’re the challenges I have to face in the classroom. Put yourself in the kids’ shoes. Take that trend and use it as an advantage.” Jacob is an Avondale Bachelor of Education (Primary) graduate.

leading the world to new discoveries A physics avant-garde discovered the building blocks to quantum-computing, secure cryptography and biomedical sensing/imaging.
DR Lachlan Rogers His story Preceded by his father and grandfather (also physicists), Lachlan was the first person to measure the dark decay channel in diamonds leading to spin polarisation. In Lachlan’s words, this has opened “a new window in nature”. The discovery of the mechanism for spin polarisation was an important step in understanding the building blocks in potential applications in quantum-computing, secure cryptography and biomedical sensing/imaging. Lachlan’s experiences in Germany saw him working with a wide variety of people where “cultural and religious differences were mutually respected, and collectively our scientific curiosity produced an atmosphere of learning from each other’s perspective on the world”.
His achievements | | | | |
Received a Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council. Completed world-first research on diamond colour centres. Postdoctural studies in Ulm, Germany, on quantum optics. Awarded a PhD in Physics from the Australian National University, Canberra. Honours in Physics (first class) at the University of Newcastle.
From Lachlan “At heart, religious traditions – including Christianity – and scientific activity are all trying to seek truth and make sense of life and the universe we inhabit. Science tells us how things work and religions help us discover what they mean.” Lachlan is an Avondale Bachelor of Science graduate.

OUR STORY Avondale College of Higher Education is a not-for-profit private higher education provider established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1897. Our mission is to foster a Christian higher education learning community that is dedicated to serving world needs. Avondale offers a wide range of accredited undergraduate, postgraduate, research and vocational courses at our Lake Macquarie and Sydney campuses, in New South Wales, Australia. Our goal is to equip students with the necessary skills and experience to excel at their future careers. This is achieved by combining theory and real life situations by providing students with several opportunities to undertake practical work throughout their courses. Avondale aims at a continuously high standard of academic achievement in a Christian environment which is inclusive of people with other faiths and beliefs. Avondale accepts the challenge of learning and discovery, of striving for excellence, and of fostering creativity that
14
blends individuality, wisdom and healthy self-evaluation. It is our goal to develop the whole person—mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. Avondale also values the sustainability of the earth and its peoples and encourages members of its learning community to realise their full potential and to live full and joyful lives. Avondale’s motto, “For a Greater Vision of World Needs,” leads to a more informed understanding of humanitarian needs and responses and to a greater commitment to fulfilling those needs. Should you choose to come to Avondale, you will find an affirming community that provides great opportunities for intellectual, spiritual, and physical growth, along with a service focus and excellent employment prospects. Avondale’s supportive and holistic higher education, via qualified lecturers and scholars, provides a learning environment where you can develop the skills needed to succeed in your chosen career and your life.
OUR history Avondale College of Higher Education traces its beginnings to 1892 when its predecessor institution was established in Melbourne, Victoria, to educate young people for employment in the developing work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. In 1897, Avondale was relocated to the site in Cooranbong, New South Wales, initially offering courses in teaching, business and biblical and mission studies. Avondale has been preparing students for degrees since the 1950s, initially through external programs (BSc, University of London) and affiliation agreements (BA, Pacific Union College, California; MA, Andrews University, Michigan), and subsequently with Australian accreditation. From 1974, Avondale has offered an expanding range of degrees with NSW government accreditation. A range of
masters degrees has been added since the early 1990s. Doctoral studies have been offered since 2006. The past decade has seen significant development in staff qualifications and research output. Four research centres and an academic press have been established. There has been increasing interaction, including collaborative research with Australian universities, industry, and the professions. Scholarly activity has been facilitated by policies providing generously for staff research and professional development. In December 2014, Avondale was granted self-accrediting status by the Tertiary Education Quality & Standards Agency (TEQSA). Since 2015, Avondale graduates have received jointly conferred awards with Charles Sturt University.

“I believe in the power of Adventist education. As teachers, we have this opportunity to truly get to know our students; who they are, what interests them, their passions and their goals for the future. I see it as a life, as a profession, not as a job. All of it has a sense of purpose about what I’m doing. The young people in my classroom are not just learning English or History. They’re learning how to be an adult in the world. I find that really exciting… Ultimately, teachers are shaping the minds that will become the leaders of tomorrow. If you’re interested in a better society, then teaching is the profession for you. I am Josh and I am Teaching.” Teaching Alumnus, Josh Brown, on being a teacher
what our students say “For me, there is no greater feeling than being part of saving a life. I wanted a job that would challenge me, where I could serve others and have the opportunity to travel. As a nurse, when I experience or witness something incredible and life changing my passion for life and serving others is rekindled. Any challenging weeks and obstacles are easily forgotten and motivation to be an excellent nurse is stronger than ever. There is no regret in my decision to become a nurse and I love the ability we nurses have to constantly try different specialties. If you want a rewarding career where you’re always being challenged, continually learning through new experiences and constantly having new opportunities, then nursing is for you! I am Krystal and I am Nursing.” Nursing Student, Krystal Jolly, on being a nurse
“Studying counselling has been one of the most important life-changing decisions I have made. I not only grew in knowledge about how to help people, but about myself and my calling. I have learnt what makes me, me, and to be able to learn in a supportive place like Avondale has been a blessing. I now work as a counsellor in an organisation that focuses on building healthy relationships, which is exactly what God tells us to do in scripture; ‘Love each other’ (John 15:12) and do ‘…whatever is kind’ (Proverbs 19:17). My job is tough, working with those who are at risk or are vulnerable, but I love that I get to do what God calls me to do every day. If you love God and want to help those in need, study counselling and see what journey God leads you on. I am Alisha and I am Counselling.” Arts Alumnus, Alisha Lemke, on being a Counsellor
16
“Jesus is my Best Friend. He’s my Saviour, He’s my Redeemer, He’s my Protector and Provider…He really is the Great I AM. I believe church should be the hands and feet of Jesus. We should be freeing the oppressed, we should be feeding the hungry and giving shelter to the homeless. We should be giving Jesus to the people who don’t yet know Him. To me, ministry is realising that I’m not enough, but that He is more than enough. There are days that I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know where I’m going, but that’s when He picks me up and dusts me off and says “It’s okay, you’ve got this, because I’ve got you.” I am Annalise and I am Ministry.” Ministry Alumnus, Annalise Lindsay, on being God’s minister
what our students say “I’m passionate about making a difference to the health of our nation and feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to do this at Sanitarium. Working in an organisation with a clearly articulated purpose, that truly values how its employees and leaders act, allows me to contribute to my society and its future and have a positive impact. Companies with purpose thrive and are limited only by the aspiration of their people. If you’re interested in the true bottom line of what you do, make Avondale a part of who you are. I am Todd and I am Business.” Business Alumnus, Todd Saunders, on leading at Sanitarium

The Wahroonga and Fox Valley Seventh-day Adventist churches are within walking distance. 7:28 Each Friday evening during semester, Avondale College Church hosts the 7:28 program, a contemporary service run for and by the youth of Avondale and the surrounding community. The name 7:28 refers to the starting time as well as to the inspiration for the service, which comes from Matthew 7:28. Pulse On Wednesdays during semester Avondale hosts Pulse, a community-building event that brings staff and students, both on- and off-campus, together for a time of fellowship and activity. Making a Difference in Cambodia Lachlan Harders
“Only ten meters to the top, just keep going!” Something I had to tell myself regularly when I was visiting Vanuatu. We were staying on the top of a mountain, with a 180-degree view of the ocean, that sat some 80 metres below. Each afternoon after working on building two large cyclone-proof classrooms, we would hike down the tiny path to the boulder beach below to cool off and shower; only to hike back up the top to where we lived.
The trip I went on was a part of a project which focuses on the development of training and infrastructure in small rural villages across Cambodia. This trip was quite labour-intensive, in that we travelled to six villages in total and, at each, constructed a latrine, water tank, shelter, playground, and conducted classes on clean cooking (food safety) for the mothers, and sanitation and cleanliness (i.e. handwashing and brushing teeth).
We stood in silence on the large concrete stage; waterlogged books now dry, broken chairs and tables strewn across the cracked platform; the ocean air clearing our clouded minds. This was where the old school stood, prior to Cyclone Pam’s devastation in early 2015. There were literally large chunks of concrete that had pulled away from their foundations. Text books were unreadable. Overturned filing cabinets were destructive weapons under the force of large winds. What we were there to do - eight months on - was bigger than just build two classrooms. These buildings would become a haven in the time of storms and future devastation, and also a place of celebration, learning and community.
One distinct memory for me was on the second last day of the trip, where we went to a village that had already begun a lot of the work for us. It essentially meant that the group would be finished by lunch time that day so a group of us had the opportunity to work with the kids and foster some relationships with them during the day. This was the first time that I had spent quality time with the people in these rural communities and it opened my eyes to something that has stuck with me ever since, which is the power of education and the effects of the lack thereof.
It was one of the best things I ever did through my uni years. It taught me the importance of service - in whatever capacity – and the difference it can have on others. It taught me the importance of working hard and challenging myself to grow, and be a part of something bigger.
I have developed a newfound passion for education in third world countries and plan on partaking in more mission work soon so far as to assist in education and helping disadvantaged kids get a chance and escaping the poverty in which they live.

It only takes one nurse... to give comfort, care and hope.
Linda Cloete MSc (Nurs) BSc Nurs (Gen, Mid, Psych, Com.H) DICU, DNEd. Cert IV workplace assessment and training
“As far back as I can remember, I’ve enjoyed helping others learn about the human body and how to keep it functioning well. I could never make up my mind whether to teach or to nurse, but when I eventually made the decision to make nursing my profession, it was with the intention that irrespective of the path I found myself on, teaching and helping others along their own path of learning would always be a component of my role.”

“I have been working at Avondale for 27 years, developing and coordinating the General Studies course and teaching students needing an orientation to higher education. It is encouraging to see the gains they make and the success they have in their undergraduate degrees and the success of those who go on to pursue masters degrees. Most DGS entrants come into the course lacking a student identity. Those who engage with the course material typically make rapid progress and exit the course well prepared to start degree studies. General Studies facilitates a smooth entry to higher education for these alternative entry students.

lifestyle medicine
It is well recognised that practicing healthy lifestyle habits can prevent many of the diseases that kill the vast majority of people. The Graduate Certificate in Lifestyle Medicine and Graduate Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine courses are designed to meet the shifting demands in health care towards a paradigm that includes lifestyle-based therapies. Major areas of study include: food as medicine, exercise as medicine, and psychosocial considerations for the promotion of health.
It is widely accepted that Lifestyle Medicine will become increasingly relied upon in the future to combat the burgeoning rise in chronic diseases.
It is well recognised that practicing healthy lifestyle habits can prevent many of the diseases that kill the vast majority of people. For example, over 90% of type 2 diabetes, over 80% of heart attacks and about one third of cancers, are preventable.
Avondale’s Lifestyle Medicine courses are recognised by the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine as a pathway to becoming a Fellow of the Society.
Over the past few decades, a growing body of evidence is showing that not only is a healthy lifestyle effective for preventing disease, it can also be used to manage, and in some instances, treat established conditions. Lifestyle is medicine! This has led to the emergence of the field of “Lifestyle Medicine”, which is defined by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine as “the use of lifestyle interventions in the treatment and management of disease”. Lifestyle Medicine seeks to treat the causes of chronic disease, which include: poor nutrition, physical inactivity, substance abuse, stress, environmental factors, and even issues relating to identity and meaning. Hence, Lifestyle Medicine is broad and comprehensive in its scope.
The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma courses in Lifestyle Medicine at Avondale are designed to equip graduates with an understanding of the various domains of Lifestyle Medicine and skills in its application.
Accreditation The Lifestyle Medicine courses are accredited under Avondale’s self-accrediting authority, within the terms of the Australian Qualifications Framework, and are nationally registered with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).
