Our Go-to Gals are here to answer the question, “What’s your biggest design challenge?” You’ll also find tips for fast scrapbook layouts that still have a sophisticated look.

Betsy’s biggest challenge is getting started. • Paper-crafting blogs are filled with inspiration and can be a great jumping-off point. Check out the Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking blog for ideas. • Put together small kits to create with. When I sat down to make this card, I pulled out a new paper pad and a few stamp sets I’ve been dying to break into, as well as a few packs of coordinating embellishments.

Grab your clear stamps and look for several different-sized sentiments and take turns placing them on the card. Setting the stamps un-inked onto the card allows you to see what words will fit into the space still available. Once I’m happy with the placement, I set an acrylic block over the stamps and press down, attaching them to the block. I apply ink and the images stamp exactly as intended.

Kim’s biggest design challenge is picking a theme. • Use something gender neutral; many geometric shapes (arrows, hexagons, etc.) are great for any recipient or occasion. • Look to the recipient’s hobbies for theme ideas— is your Dad into classic cars? Have a friend who enjoys gardening? I created this ink blot card for my daughter who enjoys art. • Follow the trends! Sometimes it is just as simple as picking up the newest item in your stash and using it. Remember, don’t hoard—something new is just around the corner. SUPPLIES

• Search Pinterest.com and Design-Seeds.com for color combinations that spark your interest. • Look at the pages of Paper Crafts & Scrapbooking magazine! I always try to note why some projects appeal to me more than others. Often, it’s the colors the designers used!

• Apply the rule of threes by keeping embellishments in groupings of threes or using three different types of embellishments. I will often count background stamping as an embellishment when I do this! • Apply the rule of accessories in fashion: put everything on and then take one thing off. To do this, I lay out all of the embellishments that I could possibly want to use on my card and then take one thing away.

I have a desk in my bedroom, and I don’t have space to spread out. Despite these challenges, creative time is like a little sanity break during my day.
