Sometimes knowing where to start is the hardest part of a creative session in your craft room. We asked Go-to Gal Betsy Veldman to create a feminine birthday card which would serve as a jumping-off point for two more cards and a 12" x 12" layout. Check out Betsy’s card and then see how it inspired three distinctly different fast designs.

Right Now Birthday Card Designer: Kim Kesti 1 Stamp borders in each corner and sentiments on cardstock panel. 2 Trim cardstock squares and affix stickers; adhere. 3 Adhere panel to cardstock base with foam tape.
Kim followed right along with Betsy’s birthday theme by spelling out happy in big bold letters ((see see pg. pg 34 34); ); however, however she manages to take the girly and floral design in a completely different direction by adding graphic touches with more saturated colors and a certain crispness with the black and white neutrals.

Kimberly’ss card is quite different from Betsy Kimberly Betsy’ss (see pg.34). Look closely though. Betsy’s flower motif became Kimberly’s star motif, and the laurel wreath on the original card is replaced by an oval shape here. By following the lines of the project, rather than the literal wreath, the inspiration is still there despite the stark dissimilarity.
Desi De sign gn nerr: Gr Gret etch chen en McElv cE E veen n Gret G e ch c en was inspired by Betsy’s pops of colors on an neeut utra r l ba ackground on th t e original card design (se seee pgg.3 . 4). You’ll also not o ice that Gretchen used mult mu ltic icol o or or sti t ckers for her title and a banner to anchor i , simila it sii ar to Betsy’s card. And one final inspired detail y u’ yo u’ll not o ice on the Beaach Vacation layout is the four coorn rner e tri riangles that draw the eye in to the pictures.
Gretchen ordered her photos in a 3" square r size with a border which saved her the need to crop or mat her photos. Talk about a simple way to execute a fast design!

Family Jump Photo Photo by Grace Tolman When taking family photos, it can be a challenge to get everyone looking the same direction at the same time. Next time, try a playful approach like jumping or lying on the grass or in a human pyramid. The kids will be much more willing to be part of the picture, and the result shows your family’s personality.
For times when another person isn’t available to take the shot for you, put your camera on a tripod, set the timer, and pose. It might take a few tries to get the timing right, but the outtakes are as much fun as the final picture.

Spray on a New Look Krylon (krylon.com) Make something old look new again or give new life to a favorite treasure using spray paint from Krylon. Whether you want a little sparkle and color or a completely new look, you’re sure to find a paint that meets the need. You can even combine them to create
custom looks like the Sea Glass pedestal below (a combination of Frosted Glass paint and Sea Glass satin paint). Create stunning custom accessories for handy storage in your craft room!
Spray Frosted Glass paint as directed. When dry, apply a light mist of Satin Sea Glass while holding can about 24" from object. Practice on scrap paper first, because you can always add more but you can't remove too much!

Spray on a New Look (continued) Need more inspiration? Cover a portion of a glass with masking tape to create a stripe or cover only the base. Then use Gold Glitter or Silver Glitter spray paint and create a lovely storage piece for pens, daubers, and more. The glitter is a subtle but gorgeous way to dress up any project.

If you want a pop of color, check out Krylon’s other glitter spray paints – 16 total colors. When finished, apply a quick coat of Glitter Blast Clear Sealer to increase the paint’s durability and prevent the color from fading.
Spray on a New Look (continued) Looking Glass paint creates a reective mirror effect when sprayed on the back of glass. Create a faux mercury glass look by lightly spraying Looking Glass to the inside
of a glass vase. Within 5–10 minutes, mist with a 50/50 vinegar water spray and dab off paint with a wadded paper towel. Apply layers until desired effect is achieved.
