This time, Once Upon A Kiss stars Miguel, Bianca, Pekto, and Betong once again ventured outside Manila to personally touch base with fans and went around from one stop to another via the Dinagyang Festival Corporate Parade. Lea Salonga on Mark Bautista’s London performance: ‘Ang galing niya!’
A
couple of weeks ago, Lea Salonga made headlines for her iconic performance with Rachelle Ann in London for the 25th anniversary of Miss Saigon. The actress then related the experience on her interview on The Buzz on Sunday. “For the Gala I stayed backstage because I have to get ready for the show, for the special performance following the actual musical,” she said. But apart from being part of the momentous occasion, she shared that she made sure to catch the newest Miss Saigon run during her free time when she was in London. According to Lea, she was “able to sit with the audience and cry and cheer and just enjoy it without having to feel na I have to think of something else” a few days before the gala night. “Kasi when I know that I have to sing, medyo it zaps a little of my mental
energy. So I used that, I just hung out the stage, relaxed a little bit. Didn’t think of anything else except what I had to do that night,” she explained. While she has been very vocal of her being proud of Rachelle Ann as early as when she was casted for the West End hit, Lea nevertheless felt prouder of her when she saw her perform live onstage. “ Wa t c h i n g Rachelle Ann Go was like ‘Oh my God!’ I screamed so loud when she came out onstage kasi kilala naman siya siyempre dito bilang isang magaling na mangaawit and then on a stage like that,” she recalled. But apart from Rachelle, Mark Bautista, also captivated Lea. He is also slowly penetrating the international musical scene through his West End show Here Lies Love, also captivated Lea. “And then many weeks later I saw
Mark Bautista naman in Here Lies Love and I’m like this one I have to talk about because we know Mark as a singer. He’s been on this channel and even on the other channel also and we see him during concerts and we hear his records, and we see him perform on TV
but that’s the best I have ever seen him ever. Ever,” gushed The Voice of the Philippines coach. How different was his performance? “It was different, it was talagang ‘yung kakayahan niya bilang performer lumabas talaga. When I saw him after the show parang [sinabi ko sakanya] ‘Hindi pa kita nakitang humirit ng ganyan until this night!’ And ‘yung pride talagang, ang galing galing. Giving a possible answer to this question was the recent article of veteran columnist Ricky Lo. According to him, the sisters, who were once partners against their younger sister Claudine and mother Inday Barretto, are supposedly currently in the middle of a spat. The sister’s rift, according to the article, stems from Gretchen’s outright support for Liza Soberano, Enrique Gil’s current leading lady in the well-received teleserye Forevermore. Gretchen has been very vocal in her admiration for Enrique whom she worked with on Princess and I. Prior to Liza, Enrique was paired in Mirabella with her niece Julia Barretto, daughter of Marjorie. The report claimed that Gretchen’s expression of support for Liza has supposedly “hurt” Marjorie who reportedly views the fastrising Kapamilya leading lady as

Anne performed Icona Pop’s “I Love It and All Night” with Bamboo and the coach’s top six contestants before the announcement of winners last Sunday. The performance earned a standing ovation from the coaches and was wildly enjoyed by the live audience. Later after the show, Lea was asked by her followers via Twitter about her reaction to Anne’s performance which the coach enthusiastically replied “So much fun!!!” But when asked about Anne’s singing in particular, Lea commented, “She’s still not a singer (which she admits openly),” she stated. Nonetheless, the coach commended Anne’s improvement on her intonation saying, “But her intonation is improving.” Anne got “kilig” over Lea’s comment and tweeted, “KILIG TO THE BONES!!!” Anne remarked that to perform on The Voice stage is a dream come true for her. “Here we gooooooooo!!!Please pray for me!!! iewers of GMA Network’s The Half Sisters, the Philippines’s number one daytime show today, will have all the more reason to stay glued to their favorite Afternoon prime series as veteran actress Eula Valdes joins the cast, bringing an interesting twist to the story. Eula will play the role of Ysabela Zuñiga, the rich haciendera who saves Benjie (Jomari Yllana) from an accident that left him suffering from post traumatic experience. She will do anything to fight her love for Benjie whatever it takes. Eula says she is very thrilled to join the cast of the network’s top-rating series and to work again with Director Mark Reyes. “Excited ako to work with Direk Mark Reyes again whom I worked with the first time I transferred to GMA via Kamandag years ago. And of course I’m delighted to be part of the #1 daytime soap nationwide.” Reyes couldn’t be more proud of the program’s success since its pilot airing last year. He is very happy for the Filipinos’ overwhelming support for his program which explores the phenomenon about hetero-paternal superfecundation. “A good script and a great cast. That is the formula of The Half Sisters. From its unique premise to its unpredictable plot twists and sympathetic characters in complicated story arcs, is what makes the show the number one daytime drama. And things get more exciting as Ms Eula Valdes as Ysabela Zuñiga joins the already stellar cast led by Jean Garcia, Jomari Yllana, Gloria Romero, Barbie Forteza, Thea Tolentino, Derrick Monasterio and Andre Paras. The iconic rivalry of Jean and Eula will once again be enjoyed by local audiences in the next chapter of the consistent top-rating afternoon prime show of GMA.”

AVE THE DATE! From February 20 until March 5, Metro Manila Film Fest’s 2nd Best Movie, the romance comedy, “ENGLISH ONLY, PLEASE” makes its presence onscreen! Because it’s the love month, the movie best suits the romance and fun of the Valentine’s season. “English Only, Please” prides itself with the major awards it got during Film Fest. Aside from the 2nd Best Movie nod, it also got the Best Actor (Derek Ramsey), Best Actress (Jenilyn Mercado), Best Director (Dan Villegas), Best Story (Antoinette Jadaone and Dan Villegas) and Best Screenplay: (Jadaone) awards! The movie is now the talk of the town because of its refreshing and feel-good approach to RomCom Filipino movies. The awards the movie received are proof that “English Only, Please” is a refreshing and welcome change to the usual slapstick or horror movies lately being shown at Filmfests Para sa mga pusong nasaktan… - Tere “English Only, Please” delivers memorable lines and dialogues that audiences can relate to. The main character of Jennilyn - Tere – is a funny, down to earth girl whose only fault it seems is to love much and to want the same level of care and affection. Her line “Oo na! Ako na! Ako na ang mag-isa!” has turned viral and could very well be included in the quotable Filipino movie lines of this genre. “English Only, Please” is a charming rom-com story of the bond that develops between Fil-Am Julian Parker (Ramsay) and Tere Madlansacay (Mercado), the Filipino interpreter he hires. The two comes from different worlds who have one thing in common – they are both brokenhearted. Julian comes to Manila from New York with only one goal: to perfectly recite the
Filipino translation of his angry letter to his half-Pinay ex-girlfriend Megan (Isabel Oli) — all with the help of the perky and feisty Tere, the Filipino-English tutor he hired online. As one review says “Jen and Derek delivers remarkable performances that give the film both touching, raw, authentic emotion and a certain kinetic humor. Nakakatawa ang mga eksena lalo sa part ng story ni Jen, and daming mga eksena na ikakarelate ng masa lalo na sa mga pusong sawi.” Sawi ka ba sa Valentine? E di watch na lang with friends and family “English Only, Please” is best watched with friends and loved ones as the lines deliver what’s in the hearts of anyone who can identify with love, laughter and relationships. Those who are in love and thriving relationships can also watch it as a bonding activity full of fun and humour. The wellwritten material and script greatly shows how people can relate to the story lines. So make sure you bring a long your friends and barkadas! As one netizen said, “Three or four times, with different sets of friends. They shelled out hard-earned money to share the experience.” Success in Social Media In this age of the smartphones and tablets, “English Only, Please” was able drum up interest really fast through social media postings by interested netizens and audiences. Celebrated indie filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone, who co-wrote the unheralded romantic comedy with Anj Pessumal, verified the film’s success through its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter messages, with photos of sold-out and SRO screenings.

REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer
CALLED TO BECOME WHAT WE ARE NOT YET
“
There is no calling without a Caller,” says Os Guiness. The Caller directs the call, defines the responsibility, and determines the reward. In the Christian thoughtsystem, the Caller is God and the ‘called-out” ones are the believers in Christ. This relationship between the Caller and the “called-out” ones is governed by the terms of God’s Covenant as embodied in the Holy Bible. Though the responsibility can be avoided it cannot be voided. This is because responsibility is not only being responsible for but also being responsible to God. It is this responsibility to or accountability to God that is missing in our affairs. We focused so much on abilities not on obedience. Responsibility and accountability are inseparable, the two sides of Christian calling. “The rallying cry of the Christian and Missionary Alliance is “living the call together” which presupposes a life-long commitment to Christ’s mission. Of course, this can be anyone’s cry. .But how can we reasonably tell if we are living our call? Frederick Buechner says, “The kind of work God usually calls you to is the kind of work (a) that you need most to do, (b) that the world needs to have done …. The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” In other words, you will know your calling because the work you do is aligned with your greatest strength applied to the greatest need and where you have the greatest satisfaction in serving Him. Jesus calls His disciples to follow Him all the way to the Father or heavenward. Those who respond to His call are called sons of God. (Matt. 5:9). In their pilgrimage they may pass through mountains of Transfiguration and/or Calvary. Calling is not only a matter of being and doing but also of becoming what we are not yet.“ Christians who contradict Christ are Christians who are not following the call.” Jesus asked, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” The test of love of God is obedience to His commands. As someone said, “If people are not followers of The Way, then they are out of the Way.” What we do, when no one sees us but God, is the test of true fidelity to our calling. Amen. EDWOOD SHORES - Living its mission to be in the service of the Filipino wherever they may be and in whatever generation they belong, ABSCBN TFC made the bold move recently to subtitle most of its popular programs in English. Now, fans of current top-rated Filipino soaps like Dream Dad, Forevermore, Oh My G and Two Wives, or talk shows like Kris TV and The Buzz, or kids shows like Matanglawin and Wansapanataym, can share their passion for Filipino content and viewing experience with non-Filipino speaking family and friends. “This TFC initiative is an investment in the overseas Filipino family who we have pledged to serve and by that we mean all members of the family,” said ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez. “Most of the elders in a migrant Filipino family want to watch TV shows in the language that they grew up. But the younger ones have acquired the language of the new home country or their non-Filipino spouses speak in English which is spoken in many countries as a native or second language. Now, they can all gather around the television as a family again, watch, understand and enjoy TFC’s globally popular and
