FATHERHOOD: SOURCE AND ISSUE

hen I was growing up in a coastal village in Iloilo, every boy or girl was my like my brother or sister, every father or mother was like my father or mother, every home was like my home. I am because we are. “It takes a village to raise a child” according to an African saying. Village life addresses the issues of roles, identity, and values. In a sense, I am my village. King David wrote, “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families” (Psalm 68:5-6). The reference is worship in the sanctuary and this relates to the role of the faith community today. James said, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress ….” (James. 1:27). I was aimless as a teenager when I found Jesus or, rather, when Jesus found me. I joined an Alliance Church which was a special kind of family to me. It helped build my Christian foundation. Every local church, though imperfect, is still God’s family – the central locus of the Fatherhood of God. From God, the fatherhood of man derives its transcendent meaning and purpose. From the church, fatherhood finds its elemental structure and nurture. Malachi prophesied that “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I (God) will come and strike the land with a curse” ( 4:6). But why are fathers mentioned and not mothers? Perhaps it is because mothers are the lesser problem in caring for their children. The acute problem today is with fathers. More children grow up without the presence of their father. Many don’t even know who their father is. Courts are clogged with paternity suits. We are becoming a fatherless society and children are always the casualties. David Blankenhorn (Fatherless America) came up with a profile of the Good Family Man: 1. Provider and protector, knows the value of money 2. Shows love of spouse and children through actions 3. Biblical and moral values – spiritual leader, good role model, good listener, takes time for his family, balances priorities, problem solver, teacher and guidance counselor 4. Flexibility, sharing workload as a partner. This is a comprehensive biblical profile of fatherhood. Unfortunately, this kind of fathers is now a “rare breed”. Vanishing! The evangelistic challenge is: How can we present God the Heavenly Father to a society who has little or no idea of an earthly father? If children do not recognize the authority of God or of their fathers over them, then whose authority will they recognize? They will most like grow up lawless and licentious. Fatherhood is not just about the survival of family but about the extinction of society. If fatherhood fails, will not God bring a curse to the land? Great nations and civilizations are often destroyed from within and at the heart of such destruction is the demise of marriage and the family. God, however, restrains national judgment on the basis of a faithful remnant. Father is both a noun (to be what God created Him to become) and a verb (to do what God wants him to pass to the next generation). This is consistent with the theological idea of “source and issue.” The source (father) replicates himself in the issue (children). And since every father issues from God the Father, then every father is to transmit to his children that which is inherently given him by God in creation. Every Christian father, then, represents the fatherhood of God to our world. While it is not easy to be a father, God the Father is co-fathering with us. “Don’t faint … you will have your reward” (Gal. 6:9). There is hope. Arci Muñoz on being a Kapamilya: ‘Dream come true’

rci Muñoz is on cloud nine as she stars in the much-awaited primetime soap Pasion de Amor. It is Arci’s first project at the Kapamilya network and she is happy to be given the opportunity to be part of this massive project. “I’m very happy and very grateful. I feel so blessed to be given such a great opportunity di ba? Ang tagal kong nawalathen ito ‘yung binigay sa akin na napakalaking project ngABS-CBN kaya sobra kongthankful sa ABS-CBN. Parade of Homes Silver Award for Filipino Builder and Architect

he lot size of 47 Varennes Avenue in St. Vital is a narrow 25’x100’. But Filipino homebuilder George Kwan and Architect Frank Rano effectively utilized every available inch of this vacant lot to build a contemporary 1,263 sq. ft. house. This earned them a Silver Award during the 2015 SPRING Parade of Homes, awarded by the Manitoba Home Builder’s Association. “My goal was to come up with an advanced contemporary design. So with my imagination and the expertise of Architect Frank Rano, we were able to build this house.” said George. George Kwan and Frank Rano has been building and designing houses together for over 20 years. Fortune Homes is the only Filipino owned builder to have won a Parade of Homes award. “It’s been a long road, but I’m glad my dad is finally getting the recog-

Daniel Padilla says he has similarities with his character ‘Angelo’ in ‘Pangako Sa’yo’

aniel Padilla shared that he can relate to his character Angelo in Pangako Sa’yo since they have similar qualities. “Marami [kaming pagkakapareha] dahil si Angelo talagang simple lang siya at tsaka makulit din siya, mabarkada siya at tsaka kahit mayaman siya, masa pa rin siya,” he said. Now that he is doing a more mature character, did he have any difficulties with the transition from playing a teen role to doing this soap? “’Yung character muna sa

Sen. Chiz Escudero to renew vows with Heart Evangelista next year

lthough it’s only been four months since they tied the knot, Heart Evangelista and Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero will be renewing their vows next year. This revelation came almost a week since Evangelista hinted about it on her Instagram following the dinner she and the lawmaker had with her parents Cecile and Rey Ongapuco. The dinner marked the end of the almost year-long estrangement of the couple to Heart’s parents. “It’s not a full blown wedding. We’ll just renew our vows,” Escudero revealed in an interview with Radyo In-

s part of Stars Versus Me, the launching movie of the love team of Manolo Pedrosa and Maris Racal, veteran actress Rita Avila admits she is enjoying her return to the big screen as well. “It feels good. Kasi yung last na ginawa ko was Kasal and then guest role din lang naman yun. It’s always be nice to be working with direk Joven Tan and new stars. I’m just grateful. Parang I was properly motivated by direk kaya naging okay naman. Watch the movie and tingnan niyo how I did (laughs),” she shared during the Stars Versus Me celebrity premiere held last May 23 at the SM Megamall in Ortigas. In the teen-oriented movie, Rita plays the role of a fortune-teller. The 46-year-old actress says she saw the natural chemistry between the movie’s two young stars. “Kasi they have a strong foundation also dahil galing sila sa Pinoy Big Brother. I really hope na maging successful itong movie nila and tumagal din yung lovteam. They’re very, very nice kids. Meron na silang connection,” she said. Back in the 1980s, Rita also had her own love team partner in Jestoni Alarcon whom she is still very much in touch with even up to now, “Yes we’re still in touch.
