AMA Happenings Resident adds flair to Vela on Camelback Local artist Jody Barrilleaux has been commissioned to create an expansive mural for the Vela on Camelback Apartments, 4949 N. 7th St., in Uptown Phoenix, where he also lives. “Jody is quite literally an artist in residence,” said Tom Shelton, Principal with Shelton Residential, the management firm for Vela on Camelback. Barrilleaux has worked for many high-profile clients, including creating some blacklight art for basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal and paintings for restauranteur and celebrity chef Guy Fieri. He has also been contracted by the U.S. Air Force for murals at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. The artwork at the Vela on Camelback complex will consist of a nearly 24-foot-long mural titled “Wind.” It is acrylic on canvas and is mounted to metal panels. In the mural, Barrilleaux brings his vision of “a calming, windy day – the leaves blowing in the wind.”

More than 500 members gathered online to celebrate

the best and brightest of the multifamily industry in Arizona at the 28th Annual AMA/Cox Communications Tribute Awards. This year was the event’s first virtual celebration. A highlight of the awards was a video compilation of the finalists talking about what the Tribute Awards mean to them. Some responses included: “The Tribute Awards represent prestige within our industry.” “They are the Academy Awards of the industry.” “They reflect well on our company.” “I’m very honored to be chosen as the face of the company.” “As a team it really means something special to us.” “This is an award not just for my career but for my company as well.” The Tribute Awards Committee, under the leadership of Reid Butler, Butler Housing Company, worked tirelessly to prepare for an entirely online event. “We know this year has been very difficult. We’d all prefer to be celebrating our accomplishments in person,” said Courtney LeVinus,

The July 2020 Associate Member meeting was a virtual event for the first time in the history of the AMA, meaning folks couldn’t network in person. Legally Speaking
The Pandemic and domestic violence Stressful life events, quarantine can lead to abuse, conflicts in units, on property
By Mark Zinman, Esq.
When COVID-19 first became a significant problem in the U.S. in March, there were a lot of jokes about quarantining and alcohol consumption and an expected waive of babies being born later in the year. While alcohol sales definitely went through the roof, experts are now expecting there to be an increase in divorces this year. This is due to the fact that people are going through a stressful time, including job loss, and they are often stuck at home 24 hours a day. Managers see this conflict firsthand with all types of roommates, not just married couples or families. These factors of stressful life events and quarantine, inevitably lead to problems in units and on property. At Zona Law, we have seen an increase in the amount of questions from managers relating to residents seeking to be released from their lease due to domestic violence. This is a horribly unfortunate situation and managers must know the legal steps to follow to assist victims of domestic violence. While most managers are aware they have to release a resident from their lease when the resident is a victim of domestic violence, they often don’t know what qualifies for such relief and what actions should be taken by the resident and the manager.
