AMA launches cool events as summer continues to sizzle

APRIL–MAY 2021 NEW AMA MEMBERS The AMA would like to welcome all new members from April and May 2021. Even though we’re in the middle of summer, the AMA staff continues to sizzle as it launches new events for its members. In early June, we debuted the inaugural Charity Week Competition. AMA members “duked it out” for the title of Charity Week Champion by holding fundraising events. Thanks to the Arizona Multihousing

Courtney LeVinus AMA President & CEO

Charitable Foundation (AMCF) for organizing this. Fundraising events ranged from taking donations to wearing denim for a day to raffling trips. The inaugural event raised $31,270.94. The inaugural winners highlighted on pages 6-7. Another inaugural event was the AMA’s 1st Annual Lawn Games Tournament in May at the Shalimar Golf Club in Tempe. It was a huge success with 20 teams competing. The winners appear on page 12. Speaking of winners, we announce the 2021 recipients of the Julie Hurst and Steve Peters Education Fund on page 9. These scholarships can be used for post-secondary Arizona accredited institutions including trade/vocational school, community college or a university. Believe it or not, before you know it, fall will be here. You can count on the AMA staff to keep its foot on the gas pedal and allow members to enjoy the ride.

In 2015, the AMCF created a scholarship fund to provide post-secondary educational funding for the employees of AMA member companies in good standing and to their immediate family members. The AMA Board of Directors named the education fund in memoriam, honoring Julie Hurst, Senior Vice President with Riverstone Residential. Julie served on the AMA Board until her passing in 2012. In 2017, the Arizona apartment industry lost another dear friend, Steve Peters, a Senior Portfolio Director with Shelton Residential. His accomplishments in our industry inspired the Board to rename the fund to include his name as well. It is now known as the Julie Hurst and Steve Peters Education Fund. For the fund to be sustained over the time, AMCF Big Hearts had a goal to raise $50,000. The original goal was to have the funds available for distribution by January 1, 2019. With the help of the Associated Member Council (AMC), AMCF Big

Legally Speaking A look at national origin discrimination under the Biden Administration By Judy Drickey-Prohow

who have legal status in the U.S. As a result, it follows that everyone – regardless of their legal status – is entitled to the protections of the FHA as long as that person is in the country.

For years this prohibition was interpreted to mean only that apartment owners could not fail or refuse to rent to anyone or discriminate against anyone in connection with the terms and conditions of their housing because of the country from which the applicant or the applicant’s ancestors came. Like all things involving fair housing, the interpretation of what constitutes national origin discrimination has expanded over the last several years, most commonly to include other issues such as discrimination against a person because of the food he/she eats, the clothing the person wears, the language the person speaks, and how different cultures celebrate holidays and festivals. With the inauguration of Joseph Biden as President of the United States, another issue is making its way to the forefront of fair housing. That issue involves discrimination against a person because of the person’s immigration status. This issue is not entirely new. The outlines of it were made during
