2012 – 2013 Board of Directors
A
New Year, new goals, new resolutions—always a promise of renewal. I am very excited about what 2013 is bringing for our chapter. I am truly humbled by the strength and creativity of your Board of Directors and they are bringing together great new programs with great speakers and educational value. Be sure you review the Calendar of Events and transfer that information to your own calendars—you won’t want to miss any of them! Many of our industry partners are rolling out new trade programs for designers and we continue to strengthen mutually beneficial relationships between our practitioners and partners. We have launched Industry Partner dialogue meetings called “Donuts and Dialogue.” It is becoming very popular. Upcoming event dates will be announced in the Creative Brief e-newsletter. You will start hearing about technical training classes we will be offering. Practitioners have expressed interest in learning in basic computer skills, refresher classes, and new technology. Watch the Creative Brief for more information. Our Elements trade show will be March 21, 2013 this year and will be separate from Professional Development Day, which will be held April 18, 2013. National is also strengthening the professional value of our industry by increasing the number of CEUs required every two years from .6 to 1.0 CEUs (beginning in January 2014). Additionally, National has reinstituted training for all of our Board of Directors! This will make a big difference in the level of expertise and professionalism of your 2013-2014 Board. The 2013-2014 Board will receive training in partnership with Dwell on Design in Los Angeles in June. We have over 20 committees, some short-term, some long-term, with both continuing volunteers and new incoming volunteers. We are already hearing of fresh ideas and fresh starts. And isn’t that what a new year is all about? I hope you make one of your resolutions to support your chapter in 2013! Cindy Lewton, ASID President, Arizona North Chapter

e’re now in January with the opportunity to look back at the past quarter of wonderful programs! Our membership came back together in September at Cosentino’s for a wonderful education on solid surfaces as well as recognition and appreciation for our volunteers. It was also the first time our new administrator (now titled Executive Director), Pamela Bir, was introduced to our membership.

We had an actionpacked evening in October as SubZero/Wolf hosted our membership meeting and Laurie Clark of SherwinWilliams presented the 2013 color trends, Opposites Attract, 0.1 CEU. We also hosted our first annual costume drive benefitting the kids of UMOM (the largest homeless shelter for families in Arizona), as well a book signing by Linda Barkman, Editor

of Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine. They introduced their first coffee-table book, Essential Southwest (be sure to get it if you haven’t already!). In addition to fabulous food, Couture Tile & Stone hosted a candy bar and the colors coordinated with some of Sherwin-Williams’ palettes. We were also surprised by flash mob dancers—a really wonderful evening! Helser Brothers welcomed our membership in November with a wonderful advanced window treatments seminar, 0.1 CEU, taught by Anita Boetsma, Director of Education. We also were treated to a book signing by author Jackie VonTobel, The Design Directory of Window Treatments. We had the opportunity to view the miniature room student competition and congratulate the winners (see pictures in Student News). The staff of Helser Brothers wined and dined the membership and we all left satisfied on all counts. Our annual Holiday Party was a magical evening (this issue is going to print and pictures will be available on our website). We have a many more events planned in the spring—see you there!

Emerging Professional Spotlight – Gabriela Jacobsen, Allied ASID
S
ince childhood, the beauty of textiles and the manufacturing process of clothing and draperies fascinated me. At an early age I started creating my own line of clothes that became quite popular amongst my circle of friends. It was obvious for me that I wanted to have a career in design. After high school I pursued my dream to become a Fashion Designer. Soon after graduating from college, I immigrated to the US. Upon my arrival in the new country, I realized that my fashion degree and little professional experience would make it very difficult to become a successful fashion designer. Therefore, I reinvented myself as an interior designer. It was quite interesting to see how much fashion design and interior design relate! Practically the same principles and elements of design apply to both areas. Besides being born with a creative mind, I love getting involved in the manual labor that is necessary to bring an idea to life. That is how I started my manufacturing business! For about 9 years I designed and manufactured custom window treatments, bedding sets, pillows, and upholstered goods. In 2003, I moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Phoenix, Arizona. Being new to the area, I was not familiar with the interior design market, clientele, and design style. It was quite an adjustment for me to come from an area where Southern Colonial and Victorian were the predominant styles, to an area where Southwestern, Spanish Colonial, and sometimes Modern were what clients preferred. Not long after settling down, I was offered a position with Robb & Stucky Interiors in Scottsdale. I worked as a Window Treatments Specialist helping interior designers with window treatments design, yardage estimations, hardware selection and upholstery. Many times I was asked to make house visits and conduct design presentations. During my time with Robb & Stucky, I had the privilege to work with many wonderful and experienced interior designers such as Ernesto Garcia, ASID and Danielle Jacques, Allied ASID. Their talent, professionalism, and dedication were such an inspiration for me! They inspired me to set my standards to a new level. I realized that despite my talent and passion for design, without an education in interior design I would not be able to become the best that I could be. In 2005, I decided to leave Robb & Stucky in order to open my own window treatments and upholstery manufacturing business. It was a very successful time in my career, I worked on amazing projects and I had the privilege to build new relationships with other professionals and many wonderful clients. In 2007, when the economy started to decline, I realized that was the right time for me to go back to school and reach my goal of getting my bachelor degree in interior design. In 2011, I graduated from Northern Arizona University- Summa Cum Laude (4.0 GPA) and it was one of my greatest accomplishments as a student and as a professional. During my time in college, I was honored to receive two ASID scholarship awards. I cannot thank ASID enough for the support that they offer to their members. I stay as active as I possibly can in my activities through ASID. I love giving back to the community! Interior design is one of the most demanding professions but it is also the most rewarding. Despite the fact that I have been involved in the interior design business for quite some time, I feel like I am just emerging. The beauty of an interior design career is that it never stops transforming, it never becomes stagnant, and there is always something new learn; in other words, you are never done! I am currently in the process of preparing for the NCIDQ examination. My motto is: “The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work” by Emile Zola. I believe that interior design is not what I do, it is what I am! I love my career and I can’t imagine doing anything else! Just the thought that what I leave behind touches people’s lives and contributes to their quality of life is very rewarding and stimulating for me.

ASID Supports Aunt Rita’s Foundation By Jewel Bl air, All i e d AS I D, prof essio n al d e ve lopm e nt director

SID designers gave a large boost to fundraising for Aunt Rita’s Foundation by providing 35 holiday wreaths for a silent auction held during the inaugural Red Brunch held December 1st at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix Hotel. The event was attended by over 1000 people and was a huge success. Aunt Rita’s Foundation provides grants to local agencies that give services and support to those with AIDS/HIV.
Director, Kit Koleckl, said the event exceeded their expectations and our wreaths were a large part of the fundraising. Our chairman for the event, Brian Gallop, IP representative, collected the wreaths at Central Arizona Supply and delivered them to the Sheraton for the event. Through Brian’s effort, ASID donated an unprecedented 35 wreaths. ALL 35 OF THE WREATHS DONATED BY ASID DESIGNERS SOLD AT AUCTION!

EYE ON DESIGN By Lin da J. Barkman, Editor , P h o e n i x H o m e & G a r d e n , ASID In dustry Partne r
W
hile the advent of a new year always brings reports of the latest trends, I hesitate to put too much stock in these. After all, the word trend immediately indicates that something is a passing fancy—here today, gone tomorrow as the saying goes. Indeed, some trends do come and go, while others— such as leopard prints and Klismos chairs—have staying power and eventually attain classic status. I think most of us do enjoy reading about the latest wave of must-haves, whether we want them or not, but the majority of people today seem to be more interested in lasting, value-added options, at least when it comes to their homes. From everything I am reading and hearing of late, they want to get real, be comfortable, minimize maintenance, and make informed choices that make sense for the long run. Based on a recent survey completed by long-time subscribers of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine, Arizona homeowners have a high level of interest in green products, regionally relevant art, and fresh ideas for making their homes as functional, inviting and low-maintenance as possible. So it stands to reason that there is an emphasis on energy-efficient appliance choices, neutral color schemes, durable easy-care fabrics, and repurposing. Many readers also expressed an interest in moderation—in size, scale, embellishments and budget, but not in quality. And I am certainly seeing more examples of just that in the homes I visit. “Trends” I don’t expect to see going away any time soon include the open floor plan and the desire to establish a strong connection with the outdoors. A 2012 AIA Home Design Trend Survey notes that outdoor spaces have become the new great room, and that homeowners are opting for those property improvements that offer the greatest return on their investment. If you are working on residential projects that reflect a value-added approach to design, with an emphasis on function, affordability and quality, I would love for you to bring them to my attention once complete. It’s what our readers want, and it’s our mission to give them just that. Linda J. Barkman has been editor of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine since 1998. In 2012, she conceptualized and edited Essential Southwest, the magazine’s first coffee-table book.

GreenBuilding Market
A
Accelerates in 2013
green building is defined as one built to LEED or an equivalent standard, or one that is energy- and water-efficient that also addresses improved indoor environmental quality and/or resource efficiency. Both residential and non-residential markets in the U.S. are expected to rise to between $98 billion and $106 billion in 2013. By 2016, this number is expected to reach $204 billion to $248 billion, according to McGraw-Hill Construction’s 2013 Dodge Construction Green Outlook report. Green is expected to represent 55 percent of all commercial and institutional construction in 2016. Health-related green building construction continues to grow faster than any other aspect of green. So what does this all mean for designers? Per Anthony C. Floyd, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Green Building Consultant for the City of Scottsdale, “Buildings are ‘machines for living in’ more today than they were when Le Corbusier ((20th century modernist Swiss architect) said this during the modernist architecture movement. With the recent arrival of smart technologies and advanced HVAC and lighting control systems, building system commissioning is more important now than ever.” Mr. Floyd provided an example of a current Scottsdale project: The Energy Systems Design (ESD) Office is a major build out of a 2nd floor 10,640 square-foot shell in downtown Scottsdale. The project is located in the heart of a mixed-use development including residential condos, offices, retail, salons, personal services, and restaurants at the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall.

he ESD Office project diverted 77% of the construction waste from the landfill and 68% of building materials meet IgCC green properties for recycled content, rapidly renewable resources, bio-based, reclaimed and reused materials (Fig. 1). The existing building envelope was not modified except for the addition of skylights with integral dampers to relieve the excess air and heat. As part of this process, 11 low-efficiency rooftop mechanical units were replaced with 7 new, high efficiency heat pumps. The building was projected to have an annual energy reduction of 29%. However based on the first 12 months of occupancy, the actual utility cost savings is $11,257 (49%) with a zEPI (zero energy performance index) score of 32 (IgCC requires ≤ 51). Energy usage is displayed on a wall-mounted monitor in the lobby (Fig. 2). Common tenant restrooms were retrofitted with high-efficiency fixtures that reduce indoor water use by 46%.The central open office plan has an effective aperture (EA) of 14 (IgCC requires an EA of at least 14) in 60% of floor area. All flooring and site-applied interior paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants comply with IgCC VOC content limits (IgCC requires at least 85% compliance). In another project, Mr. Floyd notes an exterior operable blind system that reduces morning glare and heat gain (Fig. 3). It is interesting to note interior techniques used on the exterior of buildings. While LEED-certified projects have primarily been built in the commercial arena, homeowners continue to become educated and show increased support for sustainability. According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), there are three factors driving the growth of green building: 1. Unprecedented level of government initiatives 2. Heightened residential demand for green construction 3. Improvements in sustainable materials Is your client interested in green design and sustainability, but concerned about the added costs? The USGBC has determined that an upfront additional cost of 2% results in a life savings of 20% of the total construction costs, 10 times the initial investment. Remodeling existing homes is the current trend both nationally and locally, as evidenced by the high number of chapter award entries in remodeling categories in 2012. ASID and USGBC have partnered together to create ReGreen, a residential remodeling program. To learn more about how your business can thrive in green design, go to www.regreenprogram.org to learn more. This interactive site will take you through the steps to enable your business to succeed in 2013.

Style The
of C O L O R! Fantasies & Realities FALL and WINTER 2012… Tasteful and very confident paint hues that inspire all designers to cleverly manipulate fantasy and reality!
Color Watch The Bold, the Bright, and the most daring layers of color! Greens and blues mixing with pinks and oranges, and all the golds, greens and reds in between.
Simply RE-invented: Copper, charred and burnt finishes…or, can we say, “archeological chic,” “extreme salvage” and “wild west adobe chic” for this fall/winter trend. This style is where the industrial age emerges a more utilitarian and mechanically inclined color palette; metallic finishes and lacquered brights, metal rusted colors and red and gold.
Simply RE-newal: This style has a blissful sense of fantasy and the reality of global strife focusing on an honest lifestyle. Apple greens paired with peach pastels and lemon; grays and tinted neutrals appear with a somewhat “ghostly” appearance.
Simply RE-imagined: This style shows images of long distant realities and a wild escape to the nomadic, multicultural, and retro technology. The mixing of robust colors with saturated mid-tones conveys a sunny attitude and optimism. Brights of orange, green, yellow and turquoise will be layered over deep, mysterious twilight teals and grays.
Simply RE-vival: This style shows a rebirth of mid-century and modern mixing with the Southwest. Bold and brash, traditional and playful, this style uses new dimensions with desert landscape inspiration of sands and sage, pinks, reds and pale yellows. It’s a resort lifestyle with nostalgia and can be quite complex and unexpected.
{
}
However these new fall/winter hues may be perceived, they will remain forever “unapologetically fun”.
Live well and, Live it with COLOR!

hen it comes to the housing debacle, many analysts point to Maricopa County as ground zero. Over the last five years, we have gone through the worst economic times anyone can remember. It has affected us professionally and personally.We were the first to start the severe decline in homes values and, as reports indicate, we are leading the way out! Industry watchers are forecasting a stronger economy and an increase in home values as we enter 2013. All indications show that we hit the bottom of the real estate market and prices are rebounding. Mike Orr, analyst with the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, tracks home sales daily and is the housing industry’s go-to person for reliable housing data. As for his take on the current housing market, “Buyers [in Phoenix] waiting for the bottom of the market missed out months ago,â€? Orr said. Other industry gurus concur. According to a recent S&P/Case-Shiller report, Phoenix continues to lead the home price recovery. The New York Times reported that “In Phoenix, which has shown the strongest recovery in housing prices of 20 cities surveyed. The lowest third — homes under $127,000 — gained 33.5 percent from July 2011 to July 2012, while the top tier — homes above $211,000 — posted an 11.5 percent increase in that period. So where does all this data leave us as residential interior designers? If you are looking to reinvent your business, this may be a niche to explore. Homeowners who are now seeing their homes increase in value have good incentive to look into remodeling and updating. Investors are looking to spend their remodeling dollars wisely‌and I can think of no wiser way than to put a design professional on their team! Debbie English, Allied ASID, LEED AP is a residential interior designer primarily involved in remodels in the Phoenix area. Debbie has been remodeling homes for about 15 years, with an aim of applying sustainability philosophies on all projects. In addition to ASID, Debbie is also a member of USGBC.

Student Chapter ÿ s the fall is coming to a close our chapter can reflect on a busy and productive semester. Thanks to a very successful membership drive to at the beginning of the semester, almost 40 new members were added to the roster! This was a semester of inaugural firsts. We held a staging competition, Stage Off 2012, in which participants were asked to stage a room and submit before and after photographs. Second year student Betty Englund won a free one year student membership. We also organized a fantastic event with four top interior design firms in Scottsdale. A big thanks to Nelson Barnum, Wiseman and Gale, JW Harris, and Bouton and Foley for opening their doors to us and helping make this a really valuable experience for our student members. With over 35 students the firms gave us a tour of their showrooms, allowed us to view works in progress, and gave impassioned and insightful presentations. This will be the first of many Scottsdale Studio Crawls! Lastly, as the holiday season is now upon us we are currently engaged in a fund drive Change for “Change.” The students have really responded with over $100 being collected on the first day! Proceeds from the students will be matched by our chapter funds and will be used to purchase gifts for a deserving family. The family is lead by SCC students who are raising their four grandchildren. Many of you may also have seen the wreaths that our board members and a few students decorated to adorn the luncheon the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees. We hope that everyone enjoys the holiday season and we are all excited to return after the new year to build upon the progress we have made this fall! Happy Holidays!
