FROM THE PRESIDENT
2014 – 2015 Board of Directors
I
t has been my honor to serve on the Board of Directors for the past four years. It is humbling to now serve as your President. Our Chapter is highly respected and recognized on a National level in many areas. We have been leaders in ASID for decades and hopefully, we will continue that tradition. My transition to President has been well paved by my recent predecessors Gretchen Palmer, Allied ASID, and Cindy Lewton, ASID. We worked closely together for the past three years to restore successful policies, procedures and protocols. The established structure gave us the ability to focus on expanding our financial stability and membership growth. Standing on firmer ground, we may now turn our attention to what I am calling “Elevating the Society.” ASID is the leading organization in our industry, yet the value of our services and even our membership in the organization are not given the recognition deserved. The value of belonging to ASID will be a major focus this year. Programs, educational seminars and mentoring activities are planned to connect members and increase public awareness of our positive impact on the human experience. To ensure the long term viability of ASID AZ North Chapter, this value has to be emphasized. Every member can help “Elevate the Society” by finding a way to be involved in the work that we do. We need all members to serve on committees, to share ideas, and to volunteer for community service projects. Being involved is energizing and rewarding! Students are an asset and boost to our organization. They need practitioners willing to establish relationships that will encourage their long term interest in interior design. A group of our Past-Presidents are working on a program to connect students and practitioners to prepare students for the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) exam and work in the industry. This exceeds Real World Design Week and will be an ongoing program that values high levels of professionalism and achievement in interior design. I want to acknowledge the role and strength of Industry Partner (IP) members. ASID AZ North Chapter has tremendous support from our IPs and I thank them for their continuous participation in Chapter activities. These important relationships will be strengthened this year as we connect IPs and practitioners in meaningful ways. IPs may expect broader exposure to the membership and the membership will learn more about the benefits of working with our IPs. The Board of Directors and I look forward to another great year. Please communicate your thoughts and keep us aware of how we are doing. Expanded Chapter communications will make this easier through email and Facebook. Don’t forget to “Elevate the Society” every chance you get. Jewell Blair, Allied ASID President

W
elcome to Fall. October welcomes ASID’s new fiscal year and Board of Directors. Some of our Board Members, including me, are continuing our position for another year. Thank you for entrusting me as the Chapter’s Finance Director. It’s a privilege to serve you and I’m honored to do so. As the steward of the Chapter’s funds, here’s what the finance director does; he or she helps develop the strategic plan, operating plan, and budget; oversees deposits of all Chapter funds, and makes authorized disbursements. Overseeing the Chapter’s checking, savings and investment accounts is a key responsibility, as is timely payment of all documented committee expenditures. The finance director prepares tax returns and provides the Board with a written monthly report on the Chapter’s income and expenses, bank balances and financial status. An annual financial statement for the Chapter Membership and quarterly financial reports for ASID National are prepared and submitted by the finance director. Our Chapter’s Executive Administrator, Deb Ritchie, supports the finance director, and our CPA assists with financial reports. Overseeing the Chapter’s signature fund-raising program Design for Hire is the responsibility of the finance director. Each Spring, for a limited time, this annual win-win-win program offers homeowners and Chapter interior designers the opportunity to work together and develop business relationships, while raising funds for Chapter philanthropy such as interior design student scholarships and Chapter programs. This year the program expanded with Design for Hire – Professional. It offers real estate agents, builders, contractors and other professionals an opportunity to work with, develop business relationships and benefit our Chapter. The Professional program runs continuously throughout the year. If you haven’t participated in Design for Hire, please consider it − in addition to helping your Chapter, you have an opportunity to win new clients! Is managing money and overseeing financial matters something you enjoy? Consider becoming our next finance director that will take office in October 2015. I’d welcome a discussion or be happy to answer questions about the position. Please email me at finance@asidaznorth.org. Jeanette Knudsen, Allied ASID Finance Director

ASID ARIZONA NORTH CHAPTER OFFICE
ASID Arizona North Chapter: Here’s Looking at You, Kid!
T
he 2014 pinnacle of recognition of the Chapter’s creative forces was the ASID Arizona North Chapter’s Design Excellence Awards Gala. With so many spectacular works year after year, certainly our unique Sonoran Desert inspires and influences our designers to create such beautiful spaces within the walls and outside of them. In luxurious surroundings on a beautiful August evening, we were dazzled with all of the winning projects and celebrated their designers. ASID Arizona North Chapter proudly recognized Practitioners that excelled in residential and commercial interior design and Industry Partners that excelled in product design. Alyshaan Fine Rugs, an ASID Arizona North Chapter Industry Partner, was elevated to Diamond Level and recognized for their unending support. In support of Smile Train, which benefits children born with cleft palates, Alyshaan challenged Gala attendees to donate and generously matched all of the donations. It is the energy and effort of our volunteers that keeps our Chapter thriving, and we appreciate and recognize those who give generously of their time and talent. ASID Arizona North Chapter also recognizes those that better our community-at-large through their commitment to the arts and enhancing quality of life. As we move forward in the next year, our new Board of Directors is ready to propel the ASID Arizona North Chapter even further. Did you know that we have one of the largest and most active Chapters in the country? And, our student membership also continues to be one of the largest and most active. Students and Emerging Professionals (Student ASID members that transition to allied membership in the first five years post-graduation) infuse our Chapter with fresh, creative juices. Look for Emerging Professional profiles in future Desert Design Magazine issues. The future of our Chapter is bright and poised for growth.

The funds are received and used by ASID Arizona North Chapter for philanthropy and educational programs. ED Brunch is an event to remember those we have lost to AIDS, and to honor and celebrate those working every day to slow and stop the spread of HIV. ASID Arizona North Chapter is partnering with Aunt Rita’s Foundation to raise funds through the donation and sale of holiday wreaths and teddy bears. This is a great way for our members to channel their creativity. The wreaths and teddy bears can be adorned in holiday themes or themes or themes of importance to the AIDS/HIV community. NATIONAL CHAPTER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE UPDATE JEWELL BLAIR, ALLIED A S I D PRESIDENT
I
n June, the entire ASID Arizona North Chapter Board of Directors attended the ASID National Chapter Leadership Conference in Los Angeles. Over the past few years, ASID National has embarked on an extensive research and restructuring process. The research involved in depth analysis of our membership, finances and our position in the industry. The main goal is to make ASID the only organization that represents all areas of interior design. With that in mind, “The Reset” was introduced to chapter leaders. “The Reset” emphasizes ASID’s role in advancing the profession in more global terms. It focuses on the impact our work has on the human experience. This doesn’t change what we do or how we do it, but it may change the approach many members take regarding “why” we do it. In the selection of national award-winning projects and community service awards, that emphasis was apparent and thought provoking. How may we have a greater role in improving the human experience through interior design? Will that thinking change the way we conduct business? The ASID National Core Values and Guideposts that all chapters will use to develop their local strategic plans are: • ASID leads collaboration with those working to promote the value of interior design. • ASID prepares its members to excel in a dynamic and evolving profession, competing in a global marketplace.
• ASID advances the profession by generating, collecting and disseminating applied knowledge. Takeaways incorporated into our Chapter’s 2014-2015 Strategic Plan include: • We will strive to collaborate with other industry organizations to value the profession of interior design. • We will develop events and activities of interests to all stakeholders including architects, commercial interior designers (hospitality, retail, office, healthcare, senior living, education, institutional/public), and residential interior designers. • We will commit to events and resources that increase public awareness of the value of professional interior design. • We will connect its members to the evolution of our profession through high-quality, high-impact training and education. The proposed 2014-2015 Strategic Plan is currently under review by our Strategic Planning Committee that is comprised of the Board of Directors (listed on page 2); Linda Heinz, ASID; Angelica Henry, ASID; Don Larson, Student ASID; Saeed Aslam, Industry Partner Rep. for Alyshaan Fine Rugs; and Laurie Clark, Industry Partner Rep. for Sherwin-Williams®. I will provide more details in future publications on how our unique local priorities will be implemented in conjunction with the National Plan.

I cannot say thank you enough to the Committee Chairs,Volunteers, Members, Sponsors and Industry Partners that make our Chapter extraordinary.Your Board of Directors and Executive Administrator have literally spent hundreds of hours in Board Meetings, working sessions, and representing ASID at different functions throughout the Valley over this past year. So, when you get a chance, please extend a thank you to them for their endeavors. Their efforts have paid off. FINANCIAL: We remain one of the strongest Chapters in the country with a balance sheet in excess of $300,000 in combined operating, savings, reserves and scholarship accounts. COMMUNICATIONS: Significant effort went into refining and sustaining three (3) primary methods of organized outreach and an increased emphasis on social media. Chapter Buzz – Weekly emails with event announcements from our Chapter, ASID National, Industry Partners, and Chapter-sponsored events. Creative Brief – A monthly e-newsletter focused on interior design industry information, education and re-caps of Chapter events. Desert Design Magazine (DDM) – A print magazine mailed to all Chapter members and Industry Partner members, which is focused on Chapter news and information, interior design industry information, education and Chapter events. COMMITTEES: The committee restructuring that began two years ago continues to improve efficiency and consistency through ongoing membership rather than recruiting and forming all new committees at the start of each fiscal year. Each committee chair is tasked with training a replacement chair or co-chairs and finding the appropriate volunteers to accomplish the committee objectives and tasks. Programs for Designers and Students – New locations, dynamic programs and extraordinary speakers provided members opportunities to learn more about design, the industry, and business practices, as well as earn CEUs. Fund-raising – Design for Hire was a great success, and we’re just starting to see results of the new Design for Hire Professional series. The initial feedback has been outstanding. Industry Partners – We continue to foster a strong commitment of support for our Industry Partners through networking and connections, educating and assisting them on developing working relationship with designers and the IP Donuts & Dialogue events.

“Lights, Camera, Action!” That’s what was happening at the 38th ASID Arizona North Chapter Design Excellence Awards Gala! It was the place for our amazingly talented designers to shine. Saturday evening, August 9, 2014, proved to be an exciting, entertaining evening at the elegant Phoenician Resort, which began with a cocktail reception and monitors streaming candid photos of members from the past 38 years. Our very entertaining emcees for the evening were Roland Arnold, Industry Partner Rep. for Arizona Tile and Kasim Aslam, Alyshaan Fine Rugs family. They managed to present awards and keep us laughing throughout the evening. Gretchen Palmer, Allied ASID, President (FY 2013 – 2014), presented Presidential Citation awards to Board members Jewell Blair, Allied ASID, President (FY 2014 –2015); Janet Jackson, Allied ASID, Membership Director; Jeanette Knudsen, Allied ASID, Finance Director; Edie Parsons, Student Rep. to the Board; Paula Quan, Industry Partner Rep. for Brizo|Delta and Toto, LLC, Director at Large; Deb Ritchie, Chapter Administrator; and F. Yolanda Trujillo, Student ASID (Art Institute of Phoenix) and Edie Parsons, Student ASID (Mesa Community College) were the recipients. The pinnacle of the Gala was seeing all of the spectacular winning projects. This year we saw the stature of several designers elevated, based on the sheer number of awards they swept in. While Best in Show was awarded to two of our gold standards: Angelica Henry, ASID, Angelica Henry Design, who won Residential Best in Show and Lynne Beyer, ASID, Lynne Beyer Design, Inc., who won Commercial Best in Show. Encapsulated in the silhouette of the striking Sotria bath collection by BrizoÂŽ is a myriad of influences: airplanes, automobile tail fins and the optimism of mid-century America. Its triangular spout architecture is echoed across a range of configurations and complemented by signature features, including closed and channel spout lavatory faucets, a freestanding tub filler, and a multi-function showerhead with exclusive H2OkineticÂŽ Technology.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD transition
BY EDIE PARSONS, ST U D E NT A S I D, I M M E D I AT E PA ST ST U D E NT REPRESENTATI V E TO T H E B OA R D ■ Transition As my term as ASID Arizona North Chapter Student Representative to the Board (SRB) came to a close October 1, 2014, I want to say what a pleasure it has been to serve. I have truly enjoyed every minute of this experience. When the former SRB, Amber Rice, was passing the torch she said, “This is a very prestigious position; you should be proud to serve on the Board.” Oh how right she was! It’s scary and intimidating to be changing careers mid-life, but feeling nothing but support and encouragement from all levels within ASID and the design community has been tremendous and very welcoming. I have met some very wonderful people along the way; people I now consider mentors and colleagues, and those I am happy to call friends. Thank you for allowing me this prestigious and wonderful opportunity.
