2016 – 2017 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER?

T

HE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER HAVE BECOME anything but. As the temperature continues to rise so does the demand on our time, expectations of our families, and requirements of our profession. We are continually looking for ways to cope, adjust, and excel. In these endeavors we sometimes forget that we have resources to help. This year, our chapter focused on tools and information to support your business, personal growth, and emotional happiness. From a day of career inspired self-improvement through mindfulness and finding your genius presented by Professor Will Heywood at Career Day, to invaluable websites and online tools to enhance our creativity and efficiency at Professional Development Day. Rachel Simmons ASID brought clarity and provided resources that enable us to exercise our cultural responsibility to historical preservation. We’ve been exposed to stakeholders and industry trailblazers that are transforming our environment like Floor Associates who presented at the inspirational Japanese Friendship Gardens, design innovators Shepley Bulfinch at their offices in the Phoenix Financial Center iconic rotunda, and the management and procurement teams of OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale. We were kept up to date on the design trends with presentations throughout the year hosted by our Industry Partners, what’s current from High Point Market by Jenny Slingerland Allied ASID, Colormix, and our Passport to Design studio crawl with our Industry Partners at the Scottsdale Design District. The experiences shared throughout the year have been invaluable; equally important is connecting with those special people that enrich our lives. The true friendships I developed through ASID connections have changed my life, and I encourage you to take the time to consider these important relationships available to you throughout our organization. This has been an incredible year. A heartfelt thank you for your support, curiosity and generosity of time and spirit. Janet Jackson, Allied ASID President

MONTHLY MEETINGS RECAP JUNE

LET’S GET PRESERVING

J

UNE’S CHAPTER MEETING ON Thursday, June 22nd, 2017 took place at Shepley Bulfinch in Phoenix. The studio was built by W.A. Sarmiento and is a prime example of modern Phoenix Architecture. Our speaker, Rachel Simmons, is very knowledgeable and passionate about preserving our nation’s history through buildings and design. She educated our chapter on the different reasons certain buildings will be considered for preservation – whether it be because a known historic figure lived there, something important to history occurred there, or it exemplifies a specific style of architecture. Rachel

also brought to our attention multiple examples of well-known buildings that are in danger of being torn down, will be torn down, or have been saved. If you attended our March chapter meeting last year, you got to experience the David and Gladys Wright House a few weeks before it was going to be closed for renovation. The David and Gladys Wright House was originally scheduled to be demolished but was saved because the bulldozer

6

DESERT DESIGN SUMMER 2017

driver thought he was at the wrong property and the building was too cool to knock down. Sadly, all of the stories aren’t as happy. If you have been to Hula’s Modern Tiki in Phoenix - it is scheduled to be torn down. There are multiple ways for our community to get involved from signing petitions to helping put buildings on the radar for the Historic Preservation Department of Phoenix. Thank you all for your support.

Aging in Place

GING IN PLACE IS A BUZZ PHRASE FOR PRODUCTS THAT HELP FOLKS AS THEY AGE MAINTAIN THEIR independence and stay safe while staying in their own homes. The trick though is to not make it look institutional, but to have products that regardless of your age would look and be gorgeous. The shower is a key component of the aging in place bathroom. Central Arizona Supply has brought in gorgeous Grab Bars that are made of solid brass and come in 30+ finishes that double as a towel bar. Handshowers are a must with a grab bar that doubles as a slide bar. The other goal is to incorporate thermostatic showers instead of pressure balance, because as we age By Central Arizona Supply temperature shock from cold water is where most accidents occur in the shower (and this prevents that). Creating curbless showers is easy with the right tile installer or curbless shower pan so there is no threshold to step over. Walk in Bathtubs are only great if you can fill them very fast and empty them even faster, because there is a door that has to be closed that a person has to sit and wait for the water. American Standard’s Safety Tubs have a pump on the drain that helps to evacuate the water as quickly as possible. These tubs can be therapeutic with Air, Hydro Therapy or a combination to help with arthritis and joint discomfort. Almost all of TOTO’s toilets are available as an ADA height, or as they call it Universal height, because so many people regardless of age want a taller toilet. Plus there is finally fabulous furniture available. Even people in wheel chairs can use the new stylish sinks. The key to Aging in Place and still having a gorgeous bathroom is knowing the right people like Central Arizona Supply who have made it a part of their business to find beautiful items that can make your or your clients life easier and more beautiful as they grow older or as we like to call it more fabulous.

THE ART OF BUYING ART BY KAROL DE WUL F NI C KE L L IND USTRY PARTNE R ED I TOR IN C HI E F , P H O E N I X H O M E & G A R D E N

A

S INTERIOR DESIGNERS OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER, YOU KNOW THAT ARTWORK IS AN ESSENTIAL element to home environments, both inside and out. And as professionals whose clients come from a wide array of backgrounds, tastes, experiences, budgets and desires, you also know that buying art can intimidate even the most sophisticated, affluent and worldly person. I think it is your task--and one shared with Phoenix Home & Garden--to promote the importance of art in life and in design and to demystify art procurement for homeowners. We addressed these challenges in our June 2017 issue, which has a special focus on art and artists. Instrumental to the creation of our features were key facts from our recent subscriber survey about art and our readers. Here are few of those insightful findings: • Subscribers to Phoenix Home & Garden enjoy collecting. Our research shows that 53 percent collect, and art is the number one item collected, with antiques and Southwestern-style articles coming in second and third. • Our subscribers collect many kinds of art. While paintings and prints top the list, photography, sculpture, glass, textiles, outdoor art, and pottery were also often cited. • Respondents incorporate art into their home decor. An overwhelming 94 percent do this, in fact. One of our June stories features a home that was designed from scratch around a client’s art collection. While this is the ultimate example, it does show how a personal passion can inspire a truly unique residence. • Art is often collected on travels. When asked how their home reflects their leisure interests our participants wrote in answers that underscored this tie between art and leisure excursions. Some verbatim examples are: “Always purchase something from our trips to remember, such as a piece of artwork or glass;” “many treasures displayed in our home were found while traveling;” “artwork and collectibles reflect where I have been;” “photography from world travel.” Armed with this knowledge about our readers, we felt that they would benefit from two pieces of advice. The first is to meet the creator of art whenever possible. Knowing the artist makes owning his or her work all the more rewarding. Fortunately for us, many artists live and work in this region, so meeting and getting to know them on a personal level is a real possibility. The second is simply to collect what you love. Our article “The Capable Collector” is all about this philosophy and it provides perspectives from an artist, gallery owner, art expert and interior designer. It’s a great feature to share with your art-loving clients.

CUSTOM FURNITURE

Things To Consider When Ordering Custom Furniture

O 18

DESERT DESIGN SUMMER 2017

ERIC CROOK DESIGN

ORDERING CUSTOMIZED FURNITURE IS AS REWARDI NG AS IT IS challenging. Like all of life, those who can overcome the few challenges will find rewards and satisfaction far beyond what they ever imagined! The challenges most face are inexperience, fear of making a costly mistake, and being overwhelmed by the process. The rewards for those whom accept the challenge are: customized functionality, exclusivity, and furniture to fit the layout and/or look exactly. The greatest part is that you and you alone, get to be the product designer. Being in the design trade we excel by obsessing over every detail and mastering the creative challenge. Imagine having a chance to see our very own Pinocchio come alive! That is what explains custom made furniture best. In order to ensure you’re success, we’ve put together a list of the most important things to know prior to ordering, and simplified it by breaking it down into each component.

1. Familiarize yourself with the product • Do some research into where a piece of furniture is made and specific materials it is constructed with. This will allow you to choose to: A. Avoid products that might contain harmful chemicals to children and/or pets used as stain guards or fire retardants. B. Buy American-made products instead of imports, where the imports often sacrifice quality, standards, and reputation for a cheaper production cost. (Check the labels closely. Some “made in America” stickers may mean they are only assembled in the U.S., but still made with cheaper products from abroad). C. Buy from a company with industry credibility. Where is the factory? Is it possible to tour it to gain first-hand knowledge of the products? • You will find what appears to be identical chairs, sofas, etc. made by different manufacturers. Compare them carefully. They all look the same but are not! The difference is in the details. Some are built to satisfy strict standards of workmanship. Others may be built just to satisfy a specific price point. Make sure you are paying for quality, construction, and longevity, not clever marketing. Some clients are mostly concerned with paying the least amount possible and getting their furniture in the least amount of time. It’s our responsibility to educate the buyer about the importance of considering far more than only those two things. SUMMER 2017 DESERT DESIGN

19

PASADENA AVE. DESIGN

2. Understand how furniture is made • Frame Materials: Buying solid wood over composite/ engineered wood construction- defines quality. • Construction Technique: specifically the support type. A. Web suspension: weaving fabric or elastic straps in a grid-like pattern. B. Sinuous suspension: (preferred) - large zig-zagging pieces of metal set in rows several inches apart and running perpendicular (comfort comes from 80% seat cushions- 20% construction), C. 8-way hand tied suspension: (preferred) - individual spring coils are hand-tied and bound together in eight separate directions using polyester cording (comfort- 20% seat cushion 80% construction) • Cushion Material: Comfort comes from the seat cushions. Top manufacturers offer options allowing you to choose exactly the type of firmness, and whether you want that firmness to come from down, foam or fiber. When it comes to cushions you almost always get what you pay for. Most people are unaware that the quality of foam varies widely according to price. Cheaper foam will break down faster, disintegrate into smaller, almost dust-like particles, and then compress to a near brick-like consistency. Instead, choose high-density foam wrapped in some sort of ticking wrap to help keep its shape and resiliency longer.

3. Scale- Know your space’s dimensions This seems obvious, but to avoid buying furniture that is either too small or too large, be familiar with the size of the space you are attempting to fill. Being ‘familiar’ means not only having the exact dimensions of the room so you know what will work into the flow of the room, but more importantly, understanding scale. Understanding scale means you need to assess not only if the new piece is proportional to the room but that it is also proportional to all the surrounding furniture in the room. Circulation and flow are critical items to make a home feel and function exactly right.

4. Communicating your needs • It is important to be as specific as possible during each and every step of the design process to avoid building a ‘Frankenstein.’ Involving your client throughout the design process will assure that both your visions are aligned and congruent. Making last minute adjustments is not uncommon with custom made furniture, because often the design is being crafted for the first time and things may come up that are not anticipated because they are impossible to foresee until the entire picture comes together.

20

DESERT DESIGN SUMMER 2017

• Fabric: When customizing, you have to consider how wide the fabric roll is and in what direction the fabric runs. This is important because there may need to be seams running where you did not envision. Do you want the pattern running vertically, or horizontally? It is critical that you specify fabric placement and pattern direction. • Draw a CAD, or if this is not possible at least send an image. The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words is really true. • Double-check your specifications and finishes. For example, contrast welt and collage fabrics are incredibly powerful tools to really set your design apart, but like a sharp sword, can be wildly effective or terribly atrocious if you aren’t skilled and/or experienced in knowing exactly how to choose and apply them. Sometimes less is more.

5. Consider how the piece will be delivered and through which area of the house • This is usually forgotten until the piece is delivered to the front door, so measure before-hand to make sure the home and the room you are working on has doorways, hallways and openings that are large enough to move the custom furniture into the space. It would be awfully frustrating to order a custom bed only to realize that it will not fit through the door! • Let’s say your space may call for a sofa that is 140” wide. You may need to order the sofa in two pieces, each 70” wide, to ensure ease of delivery. • Questions to ask: Is the delivery cost included? Who will arrange pick up and drop off? Who will assemble/ disassemble the furniture? Who will professionally package the furniture? Do they insure the furniture during delivery? What does the insurance cover? • One would rarely think it, but often the most challenging part of the process is finding a good delivery service. Sure, a company may have a good reputation, and be a white-glove service, but it is actually still at the mercy of the particular delivery person that delivers your furniture that day and his or her carefulness or carelessness with your prized possession. Research the particular company’s history of dealing with complaints and their willingness to address and rectify the problems brought forth from previous customers.

6. Choosing the right fabric • Just as furniture pieces have style and character, so do fabrics. The goal is to select the right fabric for the right piece of furniture. Unless you know how to blend fabric, it will be difficult to merge the styles together. • Not only do you want the fabric to look beautiful in your home the day your furniture arrives, but more importantly, you want that fabric to look great for years to come. To achieve this you need to select high quality fabrics that will resist fading and pilling, and make sure you get the most ERIC CROOK DESIGN out of your investment. As a last resort remember that no matter the choice of fabric, well-made furniture can always be recovered! • Double Rubs: Look for the DR on each fabric to determine the durability. Eighteen thousand qualifies for residential, and thirty thousand qualifies for commercial. Anything over that will last a lifetime. • Fabric Durability: Typically woven patterns hold up better, but are not the best choice when it comes to pets unless the weave is tighter. The general rule of thumb is that two-tone fabric hides dirt better. • Knowing Fabric Characteristics: A. Cotton- good resistance to wear and fading, but is less resistant to soiling. B. Linen- is a highly sought after look, but soils and wrinkles easily, and is known to stretch. Linen blends are best. SUMMER 2017 DESERT DESIGN

21

C. Leather- Is a tough material, but has natural imperfections and is prone to stretching. D. Wool: Sturdy, durable, water resistant, and resistant to soiling, but is not as soft to the touch. E. Rayon: (imitation silk) yarns made into a chenille are less durable- because moisture can crush the nap causing a permanent outline of the imprint F. Crypton:Very easy to clean and resistant to stains, but does not breathe easily, causing the cushions to feel very firm. G. Synthetic fibers: man-made polyester blends are the most durable & sturdy, be careful of acrylic fibers that may pill excessively.

7. Brand vs. private label • For fabric and furniture, buying a brand name doesn’t necessarily represent quality. Ten years ago, there was a distinct gap in the level of quality between private-label and brand name products. Today that gap has narrowed, as private-label quality levels are much higher than ever before, and they are more consistent. The distributors that contract for private-label production have improved their procurement processes and are more careful about monitoring quality.

WB DESIGN

8. Knowing the warranty/reputation • Buying local may be a furniture shopper’s best option to insure quality in the craftsmanship, because a local company must maintain a great reputation through its surrounding community of designers. Also, it is a lot easier to handle issues that arise in-person, than having to do it over the phone, across the country or even across the world. • Top-quality upholstery manufacturers know it’s wise to keep customers happy… long after they’ve left the store and taken their new furniture home. That’s why good products are covered by a good warranty. A good warranty is designed to protect your investment… and your peace of mind! Make sure quality matters to the manufacturer. WB DESIGN

9. The value • Furniture makers consider themselves problem solvers. They enjoy the challenge of solving a specific design challenge. If you have the option to seek out an artisan furniture maker not only will your piece be unique, but it will bring value to your space. • The top reasons people seek custom manufactures are, to insure quality, specify a different finish, more fabric choices, custom hardware, and/or specific dimensions, allowing them to have more input on the final design and comfort. • Custom pieces also have greater long-term value than the production version because of quality and uniqueness.

10. Lead-time

• Most think furniture manufacturing begins the day payment is received. Even though the piece is quoted to be ready in six weeks, final assembly may not begin until the fourth week, once all of the components are received by the factory and approved by quality control. The customer should be informed of the process so they are not dismayed when they check the status of their order.

When Cabinetry Becomes Furniture

C

CHIPPENDALE WAS CALLED A CABINET MAKER, AND ACKNOWLEDGED FOR HIS artistic expression. Creative expression is what brought me to woodworking, as if it was the music of my soul, a passion that is still strong to this day! I started my apprenticeship, at 17, with Old World European craftsmen in San Francisco in1973. Our work ranged from Historic Victorian Preservation to antique reproduction furniture. From trade secrets handed down, I now can walk into any Historic home and design and build pieces that look as if built at the time of construction. I also reproduce any furniture style from an existing heirloom, or photograph, to include hand carving Chippendale claw and ball feet, or any style of cabriole leg.

I

I am Randy Wolfe, the lead designer and builder at Wolfewoodworking Inc., where we manufacture custom millwork, cabinetry, and furniture. About 15 years ago, Tuscan style was in fashion, we saw functional cabinetry looking more like furniture pieces. Kitchen islands often contrasted and were more stylized, with a different finish in a focal point to add drama. • A European looking Island was crafted with Bombay front, it received heavy distressing with a crackle and peelingpaint finish, making it look like one large antique piece of furniture (pictured above). • Bathroom vanities and powder rooms also started looking like antique furniture with sinks (Mahogany piece pictured next page, top left).

Now any design theme is possible if you can find a great concept photo, heirloom or artifact as design inspiration, for example in a Moroccan theme (picture included). Details can change basic cabinetry into one large room of integrated furniture: a contrasting island with curved seating, arched bonnet crown molding, a cooktop area that looks like a freestanding altar with mantel, a free standing dry bar with stemware rack, carved artifacts from a salvage yard, top of bookcase and back splash area. Simple toe kick areas now have furniture kicks ornamented with stylized Moroccan molding, lathe wood turned feet, split wood turnings under curved crown molding.

DESERT DESIGN SUMMER 2017

Our Design Process We can work directly with a designer, builder or the business or home owner. A concept photo or a simple sketch of size and detail is all that’s needed from the client to get the ball rolling. We also can work from designer or architect drawings, taking responsibility for engineering, fabrication, finishing and turnkey installation. We always like to know the functions and aesthetic needs. It’s also important to work with the schedules and deadlines of other trades. I pride myself on being an “approachable craftsman.” While we often start from a picture or hand drawing, CAD drawings, and perspective renderings can follow. We generate samples for client approval on doors, moldings, legs, countertop edges, finishes, and mock ups of anything not clearly illustrated in even the best drawings. On more detailed pieces we create a full scale layout making it easier for fabrication and client visualization. Last year one of our kitchens won 1st place Millwork Industry partner, along with years of being published in Luxe, Better Homes and Gardens and Colorado Homes and Lifestyles. I like for clients to have at least one shop visit when woodworking is complete, before the finish is applied to ensure the design. We set up the project in the shop like the way it will be installed, with doors and drawers hung and fit. On more detailed projects progress photos may be sent or additional shop viewing. In addition to creative expression that drives my passion, it is the joy of partnering with clients to give them interiors that inspire and that they love to live in! When the homeowner of the Moroccan Theme kitchen viewed her kitchen for the 1st time in the shop (as described by a witnessing ASID designer) “The woman squealed with joy for 20 minutes, then spent the rest of the time fanning tears while saying, ‘Oh my goodness! Dreams can come true, this so much more than we expected!”’

INTERIOR DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

SUJAYA REDDY

Sujaya Reddy, Allied ASID 7 DIMENSIONS LLC.

A

S A CHILD I MADE FURNITURE OUT OF CARBOARD, MATCH BOXES, AND YES MY DAD’S CIGARETTE CASES. I also loved to draw and paint. With no training in art, I created some large-scale landscapes during my teenage years. When I was 14, I saw my first issue of Living magazine with a Balinese house on the cover. That was my first love in interior design. Balinese Architecture was both rustic and modern that emulated a calmness and cutting-edge design all at the same time. Since then I helped remodel my parents’ home when I was 18. However, since Interior Design was not a commonly chosen career path back then, I chose to pursue a BS in Math followed by a Masters in Business Administration to help my father after I graduated. Long story short, life took a completely different turn and after spending 16 years in the Information Technology field working for Fortune 500 firms, I was missing something. At that point, I took a course in Interior Design and loved it. May 2012, I resigned from Honeywell to go back to school full time to pursue my Associates Degree in Interior Design at Mesa Community College. During my schooling at MCC, there were several people who were instrumental in my new career. I call them my guiding lights – CJ Robb, Janice Pierson, and several other teachers. From ASID: Jewel Blair, Cindy Lewton, Gretchen Palmer, the Kravet team, Susan Soliday, the Pacific Manufacturing team, Organic Looms, and Botanical Elegance, provided unprecedented support to a new designer just starting off in a new career. I cannot say enough to thank these wonderful people and I am so grateful for everything they helped and inspired me with. Working with my clients has been the most humbling experience in my life. I say this because I become part of their life and family, and they have taught me to be patient, understanding, and above all leave out any form of ego. I make sure I provide my very best, customer service, and of course design. I do go to great lengths to make sure my clients are comfortable with my design and strive to provide high-end design on restricted budgets. I believe I have distinctive ability to translate design into a work of art while understanding the client’s needs and tastes and create uniquely functional spaces is my greatest strength. I am still exploring the design industry and feel like I have only seen the tip of the iceberg. I have been fortunate to work with Pulte Homes, designing model homes for over two years. Later I started my company, 7 Dimensions LLC, an interior design firm. My future plans are to create works in various styles, from traditional, eclectic, modern to contemporary. I hope I get continued opportunities to create and deliver new works of art in interiors. To be able to wake up every morning to creativity is a great gift and I hope to make it useful to humanity.

STUDENT FOCUS KATIE HUBERT, STUD E NT A S I D STUD ENT REPRES E NTATI VE TO THE B OA RD (S RB )

SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER! Spring semester always seems to fly by, and these past few months proved to be no different! Jam packed with studio projects, scholarship applications, extracurricular events, and preparation for graduation for some, students had lots to keep them busy.

SCC

O

NE VERY INNOVATIVE AND REWARDING STUDENT CHAPTER ACTIVITY WAS EXECUTED BY THE BOARD members of SCC with the help of their chapter faculty advisor who is also AZ North’s director of professional development, Rachel Simmons. Design students collaborated with film students on a project for their set lighting design class. Film students were eager for the assistance and “pitched” their ideas to the design students in hopes that someone would be interested in helping bring their vision to reality. These long term projects were a valuable lesson in planning and time management. They also really helped students recognize and respect one another’s hard work and experience guidance and support from their peers. Ultimately, this collaboration provided design students with an opportunity to test their skills and knowledge in a real life setting where a grade was not at stake. Beyond school work, activities, and end of year banquets, ASID student chapter officers also had the responsibility of recruiting and training a strong group of leaders to carry on the student activities for the Fall. We are confident with and excited about the next wave of leaders.

ASU

T

HIS SPRING, A HANDFUL OF DESIGN STUDENTS AT ASU WERE DETERMINED TO ESTABLISH AN ASID STUDENT chapter there. Many of the students are involved with IIDA yet sought to enhance their exposure to the local design industry by becoming involved with our professional organization as well. To encourage their engagement with ASID and to help them reach their membership goal, the Arizona North chapter awarded three student memberships at an informational meeting in January. By April, the ASU students had successfully gathered 12 members to create the chapter. Led by President Miranda Garcia, these “founding members” will hold leadership roles in their student club called IDSPECs (Interior Design Students Pursuing Education and Connections), which is a combined interest group whose mission is to help students connect with their local ASID and IIDA professional networks. They also host their own on-campus social and educational events. Each Club officer role is split between two reps, one for IIDA and now another for ASID. I attended their officer reveal party just before finals to introduce the new Fall incoming officers to ASID. Several of them talked about the value of a membership to be able to volunteer and participate and attend meetings to make connections with professional designers to learn more about what to expect after college and to potentially find an internship which is required in their curriculum. We are excited to see more faces from ASU next year. Furthermore, we are ecstatic to welcome one of their officers to our board in the Fall as the new Student Rep. I applaud their successful efforts to build a chapter and introduce more creative and ambitious students to our network.
