FRO M THE PRESID ENT

2016 – 2017 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

MAKE THE MOST OF SPRING!

P

HEW! SUMMERTIME! WE MADE IT!....... Hey, wait a minute… what happened to Spring? As I write this letter, it is 95 degrees outside and I have to remind myself (and my colleagues) that it isn’t really summer yet, and we still have MONTHS of fabulous spring weather ahead of us. So let’s make the most of that weather. Make a little time to take stock of where you and your business are in relation to where you wanted to be at this point in 2017. If you are not quite there, take some action! We all know that having a plan is a very important part of keeping your business healthy, but working that plan is just as important. If your usual marketing and client relationship activities are still effective, then make doubly sure that you are making time to implement those activities. If those activities seem to be less effective these days, then you need to add something new to your repertoire. Our business is very personal and direct. Have you considered how you might be able to make that all-important direct, personal connection with your customers? Maybe share your design success stories with your current or prospective clientele. Keep in mind our local ASID website is in the process of a facelift but you can still tap into valuable resources at both our new website AZN.ASID. ORG and our national website ASID.ORG. The many benefits available include: design contract business forms, business insurance, human resource services, trade pricing & discount programs, competition and scholarship opportunities and important market research and data. In addition to these many resources to help you manage your business, one of our most valuable benefits as members of ASID is the opportunity to network with our fellow design professionals.Your next great marketing idea may come from a conversation at our spring chapter meetings so I look forward to seeing you there! And speaking of developing your clientele….. Our Design for Hire fundraising program is in full swing, and I am pleased to report that our design volunteers have already completed many successful engagements. Design for Hire continues through the end of May, so there is still time for you to participate. Let’s all work hard, make the most of our resources, and enjoy our fresh, new Spring! FEBRUARY

LET’S GET AQUATIC

EBRUARY’S CHAPTER MEETING ON Thursday February 16th, 2017 took place at the Odysea Aquarium in Scottsdale. Members were ushered through the front entrance to the aquarium and directly to the right to the up escalator. If you happened to look back over your shoulder while riding the escalator, you saw large fish bowls suspended from the ceiling, sparkling like chandeliers with Lake Malawi Cichlid happily swimming around. At the top of the escalator, guests are immersed into the Rivers of the World exhibit. The exhibit was a long winding hallway that featured Piranha, small Alligators, American Paddlefish, Black Pacu, and Otters. The program for the evening featured Odysea Vice President and General Manager Greg Charbeneau who spoke to us about what makes the Odysea so unique, how many animals and caretakers are on the property, and what it took to get the aquarium

up and running. If you have visited the aquarium since it has opened, you may have seen it in its first phase. It is currently going through phase two of design and hopes to have phase three underway in a year or two. There are more exhibits and design elements on the way so be sure to keep your eyes peeled! Our Arizona North Chapter would like to thank Molly Dalton and Cambria for the wonderful raffle prizes they graciously donated as well as the Odysea staff and coordinators for their assistance and support. We hope to see you next month!

CREATING CONFIDENCE IN COLOR BY KAROL D EWUL F NI C KE L L IND USTRY PARTNE R ED I TOR, P H O E N I X H O M E & G A R D E N

T

HE AUGUST 2016 ISSUE OF PHOENIX HOME & GARDEN HAD A SPECIAL FOCUS ON COLOR AND was one of our readers’ favorites. We know that our home-centric readers have a strong interest in the power of color and that they look for new ways to successfully employ this design tool. They love to learn about color trends because, while they don’t want to be trendy, they do want to know which colors are coming and which ones are going. Most importantly, our customers want to be confident when it comes to making color choices. And they have plenty of choices to make. According to the results of our recent subscriber survey, more than half of our readers have plans to decorate, refresh, renovate or remodel a space in their homes in the next 12 to 18 months. About one-third shared that they will tackle either their kitchen—typically a home’s most expensive room to remodel, or the master bedroom/bathroom— arguably one of any residence’s most-used areas. Adding weight to the importance of making the right choices, many of which will be about color, are the stated expectations for these home improvement projects. The top answer, selected by nearly half of survey respondents, is to increase “comfort and convenience.” This interest in improving livability ranks much higher than the second most popular answer of “hiking resale value,” which one-fifth of our audience picked. Color is key to all areas of the home, but getting it right in the kitchen, where so much of everyday life is lived, and in the master suite, where homeowners unwind from too much everyday life, is paramount. That’s why we encourage readers to work with home design professionals. Fortunately, many of our subscribers plan on engaging an architect, interior designer, builder, landscape architect or other experts, to help them complete their project. Specifically, 11 percent of our respondents said interior designers are on their list to call when undertaking decorating, remodeling, building or updating efforts at home. That’s a good sign for both our subscribers and for the interior design community here in the Valley and in the Southwest at large. Communicating with clients about color is so much easier with examples. We provide some MAKERS OF FINE SOFT FURNISHINGS beautiful expressions of color in our May 2017 issue, so please, take a look there together with EXCLUSIVE TO THE TRADE SINCE 1997 your customers. And, for some of you, it will be a WWW.ELEGANTWINDOW.COM 480-854-3078 showcase of your own work!

Design for Aging Eyes

D 18

DESERT DESIGN SPRING 2017

OES YOUR CLIENT HAVE AGE-RELATED VISION CHANGES OR a specific eye disease? Understanding the challenges facing aging adults will guide the direction of design, during the programming process. Age-related changes include the washing out of color vision, while eye disease can reduce the field of vision; both scenarios need to be taken into account. The typical age-related eye condition is presbyopia. The results of this condition is loss of flexibility in the lens, the lenses become noticeably yellow, and the pupil muscles weaken. Symptoms include: colors becoming dim and brownish, and the need for additional light to complete tasks. Ambient light needs to increase, and specific task lighting needs to exist as well. Contrast in materials need to be considered also. For instance, a white toilet on a light gray floor tile with a white subway wall tile is a definite safety concern, since the colors are too similar and the depth of field is reduced.

SPRING 2017 DESERT DESIGN

19

T

he most well-known eye disease is cataracts, which is when there is a clouding of the lens. The solution for this disease is to remove the blurry vision, faded colors, and distractions from glare through undergoing lens replacement. Not a permanent concern, but the individual needs to be willing to accept treatment. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) destroys the sharp central vision. This permanent blindness impacts reading and driving, as individuals often rely on their peripheral vision. From this, space planning the furniture needs to be addressed. Diabetic Eye Disease is a complication from battling diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is the damage to tiny blood vessels inside the retina. The symptoms appear as floaters or dark spots in the field of vision, which can cause difficulties with their sight.

20

DESERT DESIGN SPRING 2017

Glaucoma is when there is unusually highpressure in the optic nerve. It impacts the peripheral vision, and can progressively worsen. The results of Glaucoma lead to vision loss and even blindness. As we age, we recognize objects by their form, instead of by their color. For example, the shape of an apple becomes more recognizable to our brain than the color. Contrast and lighting become more important than one specific color. Tonal contrast is more important than color contrast, since it helps to differentiate between tones of a chair fabric and the tones of the floor. It feels as if sunglasses are always being worn indoors, and this effect is magnified with dimmed lighting. Studies show that dark colors, such as dark blues and purples, are perceived as black by aging eyes. Imagine separating dark blue socks and black socks from the laundry dryer. Without further investigation, they appear to look the same. Also, pastels, such as a pastel pink and pastel blue, become washed-out and appear to be white. A color’s brightness is the least affected factor by vision loss. Hue and color saturation values are reduced by aging eyes. Color wavelengths in the blue-yellow spectrum are misinterpreted more so than colors with the red-green color spectrum. Complementary colors are perceived as the same color. Red and green side by side may not have enough distinguishing contrast for the aging eyes. For example, a bowl with red and green apples is perceived as just a bowl of apples. Brighter colors reflect more wavelengths to the retina, adding to the brightness of an interior space. Bright upholstery, non-glaring surfaces, and ample light provide the ideal environment for senior living and aging in place.

Spring, Re-Awaken and Re-New! 22

DESERT DESIGN SPRING 2017

C

Clearing clutter is energizing!

RECOGNIZE THE ENERGETIC IMPACT THAT YOUR THOUGHTS AND emotions have on your space. If you don’t appreciate it, then let it go and allow yourself to live in a peaceful place where there is a feeling of calm and order. So how are you going to create a system or a process that works for you? Clearing is an inside job that begins and ends with you. So let’s visualize how you want the space to look. The best way to start decluttering is to block out time on your calendar. Start with the area that will impact your daily life the most, especially the big items creating chaos. Figure out what is essential and get rid of the rest. Re-organize the space and this will invariably motivate you to keep going. Next, clear all tops of counters, tables, desks and dressers. Wherever you start, make a rule: nothing can be placed there that’s not actually in use. Everything else must be put away! Papers are one of the biggest challenges. First designate one incoming spot. Create an inbox tray, set up some simple folders with labels & categorize your papers. Go through your pile of papers, make quick decisions to trash them, file them, or make a note of action required then file that in the “action” file. Next dive into your drawers, cabinets and closets. Ask yourself do you use it regularly or love it, if not, lose it. Use the four-box method: trash, donate, keep or relocate. Categorizing things as you go through them and keeping like things together forces you to organize your home. It’s crucial to find a designated space for every item you own. If you don’t know exactly where things belong, store like items close to where you use them. When placing items back into the drawers try adding dividers or small containers to store like things together. Visibility is key in your closet so organize small items in clear bins. Once you’ve created order, always put those things back where they belong to save time by reducing frustration in your daily life. Decluttering closets is therapeutic but it’s no surprise that we are prone to stuffing or leaving things we don’t want to deal with in closets. Out of sight out of mind! The process of going through clothes, shoes and other long-forgotten belongings will help you cleanse your house and your mind of any emotional baggage that may be connected to these items. You should expect regular upkeep, but just be glad that the new system is far more efficient than the old one. The goal is to set up a space that works well for your needs and ultimately makes you calm and happy!

I

MADE MY FIRST FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF DESIGN IN A BLUE STROLLER AT THE PORTE DE Clignancourt flea market in Paris. In her typical style, that is how my mother pushed me into the thrill of antique and object finding. It was, however, an expensive outing, as I managed to grab a vintage Saint Louis goblet, which no one could pry out of my hands or dared to. Just a few years later, on my own two feet and by the side of my grandfather, I started my long journey throughout the museums, churches, and piazzas of Europe. Grandpa had retired at the age of thirty-three from a successful venture in the garment industry, and dedicated the rest of his life to pursue traveling and the appreciation of art and architecture; fortunately, I was often brought along on his adventures. The rest of my childhood was joyfully spent at the ateliers of various artists where I took drawing, painting, and sculpture. Curiously enough, my path to architecture and design wasn’t a beeline; I made my dutiful stop at law school before becoming an architect. Diploma in hand, I continued my peripatetic journey hopping through studios in Europe and the US, and eventually found myself running the interior design departments at a few of them. It was a progressive transition, one in which my perception and treatment of buildings evolved from an abstract approach to space towards the particular treatment and scale of everyday life. Interiors became the place where I could create the confluence of my studies in the history of art, architecture, and style; most importantly, I found a métier in which I could positively affect the lives of the people who live in the rooms I design, and “that” as a design doyenne said: “…is good thing.”

ITH JUST A FEW SHORT WEEKS REMAINING IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR, IT IS SHOCKING TO realize how quickly time has passed since the last update I gave regarding the student members of our ASID Arizona North chapter. The third week of January is always a whirlwind, as we dive into new courses after a long holiday break. Despite new class schedules and a change in daily routines, we still achieved a very healthy turnout for the first student event of the new year. Over 20 students from various schools attended the Interior Design Studio Tour on January 20th, hosted by the Scottsdale Community College ASID Chapter board. They took students to three Interior Design studios to expose them to different sized businesses with distinct operation styles and office setups. We met their staff, saw their libraries and warehouses, and learned

about the history and structure of each company. We first visited Est Est, Danielle Jacques Designs and then Freidman & Shields. We heard similar words of wisdom at each place, like the testimony that a career in Interior Design is not always as glamorous and fun as people might perceive it, yet it is extremely rewarding. Another tip we heard is that success in the industry is tied to building long-lasting and trusting relationships with product reps, installers, showroom consultants and, of course, clients. One final common piece of advice from each studio is to gain experience in as many different areas of the design industry as possible, or with different designers to absorb as much as possible and to discover what you truly enjoy and what you don’t!

SCC RE-DESIGN COMPETITION

A quick visit that Rachel Simmons and I took to ASU the following week was well received and we found enthusiastic young student leaders who sought to be a part of ASID in addition to their prominent IIDA student chapter. We snagged five new members that day and are so excited to welcome them to our organization! In February, we were disappointed that the annual Student Design Charette had to be postponed due to low registration, and we hope that the new date (TBD) will bring a higher participation rate. This event is a valuable educational experience for students. They are given the opportunity to prepare for the NCIDQ exam by working in teams on all aspects of a real-life interior design project for a full day. We will be sure to keep members updated on the new date via e-mail communication and on the AZ North website. continued on p.28

Another event organized by the SCC chapter took place in early March, called the Showroom Shuffle. It was open to all students and they visited the new Daltile showroom in Tempe and Knoll. At this same event, the SCC student leaders announced the winners of a re-design competition they held. Several participated, submitting before and after photos in four categories: Remodel, Redecorate, Refurbish, and Recycle. By far, the most popular category was the Refurbish category. We had no idea so many students were so crafty in their free time! The winners of each category were judged on creativity, originality, functionality, and extent of transformation. • Remodel - MICHELLE MAY • Redecorate - CASSANDRA CALCATERRA • Refurbish - ASHLEY DECKER AND MICHELLE MAY (TIED) • Recycle - AMY TOMAN As we near the end of the semester, many students prepare to graduate and we look forward to one final event of the year, Career Day! This is a full day of valuable speakers and activities to build confidence to set out on their own and begin a rewarding career in design. Students who are members of ASID are lucky to have the opportunity to participate in all these events, educational experiences, and networking that goes on all year round!
