Cheers

North Chapter of ASID was founded in 1976 but the ASID legacy dates to the early 1930s.

Despite the hardships of the 30s and 40s, a new American design aesthetic arose from those authorities, setting the tone for the rest of the century. As we close in on nearly 85 years of industry leadership, our membership continues to influence the future of interior design in the places we live, work, play, and heal.

It gives me great pleasure to not only congratulate our Arizona chapter tastemakers and craftsmen in the many awards received at the 2019 Design Excellence Awards and Gala, but to also welcome you to the 43rd year of the Arizona North Chapter of ASID!

It is such an honor to lead this chapter as President into the next decade and to continue building on the legacy of collaboration among design professionals in the Phoenix metro area as well as throughout the state of Arizona. Our chapter remains a model for others in terms of our fabulous design, active membership, programs, and the many volunteers that have mobilized to address chapter and community needs, creating signature programs and adding capacity to efforts through volunteerism.

What has made the Arizona North chapter impactful throughout the years is the effectiveness of its trained professionals. Educational requirements and training ensure that our members are ready to face the challenges of design, both today in how we represent our profession in work product, business acumen, and participation in signature programs; and in the future, as committee leaders and board members. As a professional organization we offer unique opportunities for personal growth through leadership development and training, community service, and lifelong connections.

My hope is that our new and seasoned design members, and our highly supportive community of industry partners will take advantage of all the benefits listed above that the Arizona North chapter has to offer. Together, we are a network of design professionals empowered as leaders to continue our legacy of influencing the future of interior design.

Cheers to a new year!

receives donations from our membership of design, materials and labor.

This year we would like to name The James Walton Home – Project Veterans Pride as our charity of choice. Interior design students will be invited to participate in a project benefitting Project Veterans Pride. The project includes space planning and designing the interior of a community room or some other agreed upon space(s).

Under the supervision of tenured designers and our leadership, the students compete for the winning installation design through our Spring Student Charette. Student entries are received from five accredited interior design schools: Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Scottsdale Community College, Phoenix College and Mesa Community College. Opportunities for the donation of materials and labor are welcome and encouraged from the design build community. The installation at The James Walton House will occur in 2020.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY

THANKFUL & GRATEFUL for our hosts, sponsors and presenters for their involvement with Professional Development Day 2019 held at Scottsdale Community College. We started the morning with a fabulous continental breakfast sponsored by DunnEdwards® Paints. Terri Taylor, ASID, award-winning interior designer and founder/CEO of Interior Design Business Academy, presented the CEU, "Nine Money Magnets." We discovered the simple shifts for attracting abundance into your life and business:

• Taking Ownership, Responsibility, Accountability for making clear offers

• Wealth & Abundance consequences as a type of mindset

• Clarity of Intention – Life holds special magic, imagination, vision & spirit

• Getting Out of Your Own Way

We continued with How to Build a Team that Builds Your Business , learning how to create a backroom so that one can create more billable time and happiness... designing. Do what you do best and delegate the rest to expert professionals by specific tasks for just the time needed. Put repeatable solution systems in place for tracking and purchasing orders with cloudbased design job organization and bookkeeping software. This will free up time to work ON your business by networking, marketing and creating revenue to ultimately sign up new clients.

Denise P. Peliquin, CPA and Owner of My Design Desk, sponsored a delicious lunch. Our Keynote Speaker was Dr. Neal A. Lester, Foundation Professor of English and Founding Director of the award-winning Project Humanities initiative at Arizona State University. Dr. Lester presented Humanity 101 in the Workplace, asking questions in the workshop about preconceived ideas about bias and race. What is privilege? Where is privilege? It is everywhere. An exercise was to pick out a book; asking us why we picked out that book? He emphasized don’t judge a book by its cover. Another

exercise was on the Stroop Effect- naming the color of the word and not the word itself. He called on us to imagine a world where you are continually absent from it, to try and think of people outside of your social circle; honor the Pledge of Humanity 101 by listening more to our clients with:

• Empathy

• Forgiveness

• Integrity

• Kindness

• Respect

• Self-Reflection

We finished the day with Chaz Stevens, owner of Chaz Stevens Design. He inspired us to think about: designing the perfect bed for your particular client, when to talk with your client about bedding and bath design, and how to educate our clients on the products that best suit their needs and budget.

ASID

IT WAS OUR PLEASURE, as always, to join you this year at the ASID Awards of Excellence. The evening is a special one for us at Phoenix Home & Garden for many reasons: We love seeing all of you dolled up in your finery, having the opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues, and make new acquaintances. While anticipation over who would win was understandable, from our perspective the gala was about much more than who would be going home with trophies in hand.

In a profession that can be very competitive, it is heartening to witness such genuine camaraderie among the members of ASID’s Arizona North Chapter. The sense of family, alliance and community brought an energy to the room that was tangible. From neophyte members to seasoned veterans of many years, the fellowship we saw—and felt—transcended winners and runners-up and made for an evening where, in our eyes, everyone was a champion.

As I mentioned from the podium, we hold our relationship with ASID close to our hearts. It is not an exaggeration to say that without your creativity and hard work, we would have a lot of empty pages to fill every month. While every project cannot “win” a place in our magazine, everything you do professionally is worthy of notice, which is why, again, we encourage you to share with us what you’re up to. In the coming months, we will be hosting events that will enable you to see and understand our selection process, what drives our decisions and how we publish the Southwest’s leading shelter magazine.

With a tip of our collective hats, we salute the work you have already completed and the many exciting projects yet to come.

MONTERREY TILE

rom humble beginnings 30 years ago, the owners of Monterrey Tile couldn’t have comprehended that their company would now be transitioning to one that will become employee owned. Through hard work and dedication to the Arizona market, Monterrey Tile has become a fixture in the landscape stone, porcelain tile and granite/quartz slab markets. Over the years there have been many changes in Arizona style and design, but Monterrey Tile has always provided consistent service with dedicated employees.

Recently, Monterrey Tile expanded its portfolio into the architectural and design community and asked two of their great people to undertake that task. Jeffrey Bennett and Lisa Giacomino are our A+D Solutions Providers.

Lisa lived in Whitefish Montana and Seattle before moving to Arizona in 2007; joining Monterrey in 2013. Lisa’s love of travel has influenced her enthusiasm for mixing styles, colors and textures. Lisa has decades of sales and design experience. That, along with her warm personality, have helped her create many lasting relationships with contractors and designers.

Jeffrey is a native Oregonian, and prior to joining the Monterrey team in 2012 worked in the tile and stone industry as an importer, distributor, retailer and installation contractor for over 30 years. When not looking for new and exciting tile trends, he can be found exploring our wonderful state in his classic convertible.

These two, along with the 90 other dedicated solution providers at Monterrey Tile, are ready to assist architects, designers and contractors in creating beautiful spaces and happy clients.

La-Z-Boy

a-Z-Boy has had a presence in AZ since 1983 but it wasn’t until the late 1990’s when La-Z-Boy became more than just a recliner store. They wanted the clients coming into the stores to have a more meaningful opportunity to create amazing living environments by offering an in-home design service. They believe that clients from all walks of life, could have the opportunity to enjoy the look and feel of a professionally designed living environment. From small style updates to complete transformations, La-Z-Boy offers design services for any, or every stage of a consumer’s project. La-Z-Boy believes that good design impacts and improves people’s everyday lives.

Industry Partner and La-Z-Boy Brand Engagement Manager, Jennifer Chandos has worked for La-ZBoy for over 19 years and is passionate about interior design. One of her top priorities, is to support and promote their company’s Design Services. She works closely with La-Z-Boy’s 19 accredited ASID designers on staff in Arizona. This design council completes over 3800 design projects annually. For over 15 years, La-Z-Boy Arizona has operated the top 4 stores in North America largely due to the design services they provide their clients.

THIS UNIQUE AWARD is not a design award. As defined by our chapter, the Designer of Distinction Award “honors a professional member who has performed services not only within the organization, but has also, as a member of the profession, extended their expertise, knowledge, and human worth to the community.”

As both a registered architect and an ASID interior designer, Brian Cox is known for consistently delivering ASID award-winning designs in commercial and residential realms. Brian and his firm, Cox James Architects, is active and influential in both ASID and AIA. His commitment to the future of our profession and to future design professionals has been established for years to come with the endowment of the Cox James Architects Scholarship for Design Excellence at ASU’s College of Design.

QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD 2019 >>>

AUTUMN HOUSE was selected to receive our chapter’s Quality of Life Award for their work in providing a safe place for survivors of domestic violence and/ or sexual assault. Located in Mesa, AZ and providing services to the community since 1983, it was the east valley’s first domestic violence shelter. It was opened in response to community need.

Every year, our chapter selects a cause to support and give back to our community, including students, designers, and industry partners. The winners from the 2019 Student Charette created inspirational concepts for an interior redesign that included space for meals, classes, and personal development. Thank you to the many student and professional designers as well as the following: Dunn-Edwards Paints, Alliance Contracting, API Electric, California Closets, Cities West Publishing, Facings of America, Ferguson Lighting, Inside Out, Jonathan Puente Photography, Moxie Design Studio, Ornamentation, Stephanie Hyma Mural Designs, & Younger Brothers Door and Trim.

ENHANCEMENT OF THE ARTS 2019 >>>

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX celebrates 10 years in the Valley and is recognized as one of the top three children’s museums in the nation. Located at the site of the historic Monroe school, this building was built in the style of Neoclassical architecture. When it opened its doors in 1914, it was the

>

largest elementary school west of the Mississippi. More than just great architecture and great education, Children’s Museum of Phoenix now provides art, play and creativity and supports our children and future growth of our city and, thus, was recognized by our chapter with the Enhancement of the Arts Award.

YEARS IN THE VALLEY 10
> BEFORE AFTER

A big thank you TO Mark Boisclair

for generously donating his time to our Gala for the past three decades! We are grateful for your dedication and professionalism!

Van

Awarded to an industry partner individual, this award recognizes a person who impacts our interior design community in a positive way, who has been dedicated to the success of our chapter over time and has been committed to volunteering within our chapter.

Richard Van Gilse became owner and president of this family-owned business in 1992. Six years ago, Facings of America created a charity event: Design for Dogs. Teams of designers, architects, and builders compete in a design competition to create doghouses that are auctioned off to the public. To date this event has raised $120,000 for the Arizona Animal Welfare League. Richard also creates many events in the design community for networking and collaboration between designers and trades. Richard is a shining light within our design community, and we are proud to honor him as Industry Partner of the Year 2019.

This year we recognize JOHN ROARK , Editor in Chief of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine. Our chapter and Phoenix Home & Garden have enjoyed many years of partnership as each endeavors to promote and support good design in the Valley.
