hen I prepared for the one-year term the President holds with the Arizona North Chapter of ASID, I certainly expected challenges; but I didn’t expect a pandemic. I was excited to have the opportunity to move our profession and this amazing organization forward in this incredible metropolis we call home. Totally stoked! I still am! If this experience has taught me anything, it’s proved that when we come together, we do change lives. Time and time again you’ve shown me that we are a group of resilient, dedicated, passionate design professionals who love our industry, love creating beautiful design, and best of all, value the many beautiful friendships we find along the way. Pivot. No matter your feelings on the thought of pivoting, what it really means, and how it would or did affect your business; you did it. Good for you. As a board we knew we had to pivot. Make those changes that technology demands of all businesses. Shift ever so quickly to continue to bring our members value. However, we did not expect a pandemic. Crazy as it may seem, we started the year focused on crisis management and asking ourselves, “What’s in it (ASID) for our members.” Coincidence of course. But our goal remained unchanged: finding new ways to bring value to your membership because we value you. I am so proud of your 2019-2020 Board of Directors and Sponsors. These dedicated volunteers and community leaders have shown up for you, and for me, time and time again. They thought outside the box, they’ve pushed the envelope, and they continue to strive for more. However, the work is not done.Your 2020-2021 board and sponsors have already begun to carry the baton forward and forward we will go. My best to each and every one of them and of course, to you. Thank you for entrusting me to lead the Arizona North Chapter of ASID. I am forever grateful.

CHRISTINE RHODES, Industry Partner Rep Facings of America membership@azn.asid.org
Christine began her journey with ASID in 2015 when she joined the AZ North Chapter as an Industry Partner Representative. She is excited to join the Board of Directors 2020-2022 as Membership Director and guiding that very same committee where it began for her! FROM THE PRESIDENT
T
he impact of design is rapidly changing in our industry/profession… calling for a healthier and aesthetically pleasing environment. Implementation is best accomplished by one of our professional ASID Interior Designers trained to embrace quality of life wherever people live, work, play and heal. As a result of COVID-19, interior designers and industry partners understand the vital links between health, environment and healing. If there is one thing COVID-19 has taught us is to be more empathetic. Let’s not go back to “normal” let’s progress to a new normal where we are accepting of others and their differences. Let’s empathize Diversity and Inclusion. Where Diversity and Inclusion are key and where acceptance of others and their differences are paramount. I would like to create a portfolio of innovative offerings that help our chapter and members generate revenue. In order to do that I need volunteers to head up chairs so we can implement our goals. I want to call on our members to actively participate with strategic committees in broader areas to increase our public relations, media and exposure of the design community. I want to make the appellation great again, “make it known to the public” … what an ASID designer is… Anyone can change a room, an ASID designer can change the world.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Friends and Colleagues,
W
hat strange times we live in right now. Masks are a required accessory, temperatures are taken
by strangers, client meetings are via Zoom and loved ones receive virtual hugs. However, even with the spread of COVID-19, our industry has been busy and perhaps, more needed than ever. So many are home, looking at their surroundings and wanting to make them more functional as well as more beautiful. We designers, while not essential workers, can certainly help our clients feel less isolated by improving how they live. Another result of Covid was our inability to gather and celebrate each other at this year’s Design Excellence Awards. However, the Oscars-like video was wonderful! The committee did an amazing job of making the awards ceremony so exciting and fun! This issue of the Desert Design Magazine showcases all the winners. The projects this group of professionals created is amazing! I judge several of these competitions for other chapters throughout the country during the year and I can say, without hesitation, that the quality of work coming from the Arizona North chapter is the best in the country. Your creativity and professionalism are an inspiration to us all! Enjoy this issue and know we have a lot of great information to share with you in the coming months! Stay well!

Changing Seasons

s Autumn approaches and everyone eagerly awaits the return of pumpkin spice-flavored everything, I am instead, reflecting on our long sunny days of summer. Scorching as it was outside, inside, we kicked off the Donuts&Dialogue Drive-Thru series in May via Zoom, and it has only gathered momentum thanks to early adopters and the generous support of our industry partners. The Drive-Thru series has been host to eight unique and dynamic presentations from a varied list of IP’s, showcasing who they are, what they do, and the incredible value they bring to the industry as specialists in their respective fields. Each Drive-Thru presentation has been recorded, so in case you missed one, you can find them on the ASID Arizona North YouTube channel. This has been an extraordinary year and we have all had to find new ways to interact and conduct business. The Drive-Thru is just one of the ways we are staying connected. I’m grateful to have been part of an organization that has risen to the many challenges we’ve recently faced. The spirit of cooperation to keep pushing forward when the very nature of doing business is in flux, is a testament to the unwavering will of our industry partners.Your generosity inspired our partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank to make a much-needed contribution to those in need, in your honor. It has also been an honor and a privilege to represent you for the last two and half years as Director at Large. Thank you, industry partners, for trusting me to uphold your interests to the board, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have advocated on your behalf.

Restoring Dignity and Giving Back
G
iving back takes on new meaning when those that give are the same individuals who have already given the ultimate sacrifice; putting their lives on the line for the freedoms we all enjoy. The passion to help homeless veterans restore their dignity, pride, and honor, became reality in 2011 when Project Veterans Pride founded the James Walton Home, a transitional housing facility where homeless veterans could receive psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery services, and job training they need to find viable work and housing. Our chapter and students embarked on the second phase of this journey to help homeless veterans find their way back to productive lives. From the student charette, planning and presentations, to the installation of the community spaces at the JAMES WALTON HOME, we are in full swing thanks to the generosity of our chapter and community members. We look forward to sharing the power of design and how the Arizona North Chapter of ASID membership impacts lives in the months ahead.

his is a call for designers to volunteer for our signature program, the INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR HIRE (IDFH) in 2021. Year after year this program has continued to grow, and we look forward to the seasons ahead. IDFH has helped many designers build their businesses over the years and we have touched countless lives, bringing them stunning designs and functional spaces. Profits from IDFH are earmarked annually for student scholarships and educational programs, including funding of chapter community efforts. Designers benefit in establishing a new client base by volunteering for one or two-hour consultations. This program helps encourage the public who have never used a designer to test the waters with a small budget and get professional advice. The continued growth of this program is dependent on current and future volunteers.

atching this year’s award show, I was so incredibly excited to see the level of talent this organization brings to the Valley. I was blown away with the projects shown on screen and so thankful for all the hard work and effort that was put forth to execute this event virtually. In a time where the tide seems to be continually shifting, good design is our refuge and your work is valuable to so many. The real estate market in the Valley has never been stronger. Prices are going up, inventory is down, and buyers are paying over asking. Sure, the promise of year-round beautiful weather is a significant lure, but don’t discount the bastion of great design this area has become over the years and how you have become part of the engine that is driving growth. If you weren’t as talented as you are, people wouldn’t be flocking to buy incredible, stunningly designed homes. It could be argued that great design reigns in the chic metropolitan cities such as New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. Simply looking at the work that comes out of the ASID members here in Arizona, you’d be very mistaken. The Design Excellence Award winners of this year and year’s past, could easily rival any other city coast to coast. Winning a Design Excellence Award from ASID is a badge of honor that can be worn proudly and help you grow your business if you use it wisely. We at Modern Luxury Media are honored to be the Media Partner of this thriving chapter and look forward to more events together (when we’re able) where we can exchange ideas, network, and learn from each other. As JFK said, “a rising tide, lifts all boats”, and this chapter is a tide that keeps rising ironic, since we live in the desert. Congratulations again to all the 2020 Design Excellence Award Winners. You are all truly inspiring!

ALYSHAAN FINE RUGS
T
he principals of Alyshaan Fine Rugs have been in the fine rugs business for three generations. It all started in 1969 with Mr. Aslam manufacturing and exporting handmade rugs from Pakistan. In 1979, his son, Saeed Aslam, migrated to the US and opened a showroom in Albuquerque. They expanded into other markets including Las Vegas and Minneapolis. Saeed moved to Scottsdale in 2001 and started Silk Route Fine Rugs. About 12 years ago Saeed expanded and moved to the Scottsdale Design Center and re-named the business, Alyshaan Fine Rugs, now the largest fine rugs business in Arizona. Saeed’s son Sammy joined the family firm and is now primarily running the show. The Aslams have built their business on a simple and honest business concept of no sales or gimmicks, offering clients fair prices every day. These policies are the biggest reason for their success. Alyshaan has very friendly, experienced staff who enjoy helping customers make an informed decision. One visit to Alyshaan and you will feel very educated about handcrafted rugs. All this, combined with magnificent quality, impeccable customer service, friendly knowledgeable staff, FREE in-home showing, over 5000 rugs in stock, and a “Best in the Industry” guarantee on material and workmanship, has made Alyshaan a leader in the fine rugs industry and the best source for fine rugs in Arizona. Over the years, Alyshaan has received many awards and testimonials and they have the highest rate of repeat customers in the industry. Alyshaan is also an environmentally friendly company operating with a social conscience, treating their weavers, vendors, employees, and clients with respect. Alyshaan also supports local and international charities.

ARIZONA FIREPLACES
A
rizona Fireplaces – a contradiction of sorts! “Fire” products selling in one of the hottest, driest states in the nation. A family-owned and operated business named by the Phoenix Business Journal as the 28th Largest Phoenix-Area Family-Owned Companies and listed by the INC5000 as one of the fastest-growing companies in America. In 1980, Don Richardson, founder & CEO along with his wife, Debbie, created one of the most successful businesses in the state. To this day, the company sells hearth products to the entire southwest and is an online fulfillment center for the largest retailers in the industry. Don’s journey began selling gun nails, staples and framing hardware to contractors. He revolutionized the use of nail guns by initiating a standardized angle that is still used today. An entrepreneur, Don realized he could sell more products during the framing phase. Close ties with top builders, and the natural progression of house framing and fireplace installation occurring simultaneously, created a natural fit that evolved Arizona Fasteners into Arizona Fireplaces. Arizona Fireplaces touts two state-of-the-art showrooms built with designers, builders and their clients in mind. An engaging “live burn” view of the most current fireplace products available anywhere in the US include traditional options with gas logs, large linear looks with TV’s mounted above and even the sleek innovative beauty of Modern Flames electric options. Fireplaces, BBQs, accessories and a sales team and customer care department that are knowledgeable about their products rate second to none! In these last 40 years, Don has continued to evolve the business as an industry leader. Even here in the hot, parched desert, “fire” for comfort and beauty has found its niche. People who know Don will tell you even at 65 he’s a hardworking humble guy. He still comes to work every day where he can be found in his office, on the sales floor or even driving the forklift in the warehouse-which terrorizes everyone!

Tabarka Studio
I
n January of 2018, Michele Hartley listened to her inner voice and refocused her passion for hard surfaces. In doing so, she found herself sipping coffee with the owners of the locally owned tile studio, TABARKA, and pondering how life delivers us to where we need to be. For Michele, it was a journey with a BA in Interior Design from Florida State University, followed by fifteen years in high-end residential design. Then came a leap of faith to the other side of the industry-product representation. In 2004, Michele joined Waterworks and began her career assisting designers and homeowners in creating their visions with premium products. Her design experience provided her with a respectful understanding of a designer’s needs while being empathetic to the often-under-appreciated skills required of designers to achieve high expectations. This perspective combined with her passionate love affair for artisanal products proved to be a winning combination. After more than a decade in product assortments, she knew it was time to focus solely on her favorite-surfaces! Tabarka Studio manufactures their own thoughtfully curated collections of handpainted terracotta, cements and wood parquet in Scottsdale. Bespoke and timeless, these materials work together harmoniously to inspire the creation of a captivating project. Unite these products with the energy, dedication, integrity and knowledge that Michele provides, and the end result is proven to be one you will seek out again and again.

STUDENT NEWS
Starting a brand-new school year
☛ Let's
ROCK the
REST!
“W
ho would’ve thought that the excitements of starting a brand-new school year would take a back seat to hand sanitizer, face masks, and 6’ social distancing? This school year for many students has been an interesting transition into their new chapter, but for many, it’s just a continuation from last year’s spring semester. Now, we have managing our mute button on Zoom, and see which sweatpants fit best! This challenge in our lives needs to be a learning experience and a point to brainstorm on how we’re going to rock the rest of our careers. Right now, we are making history and, one day, we will look back at this moment and think to ourselves, “what did we learn?” In no time, we will be back to the hustle and bustle of life, but for now, let’s take the time to find our strengths and build upon that. Absolutely right now things are scary, but you can find some peace knowing you’re not alone. Find out what you like about working from home and what you don’t. What compliments have you received that you took in and what compliments have you received that you dismissed? Go back to the basics and grow from this experience as you will one day be telling the younger generation how you kicked ass in 2020. As for now, student events are still either Zoom based or canceled. Just sit tight because, in no time, you will be able to express your strongest passions again, and things will be back to normal. It has been a pleasure of mine to be the student liaison for the ASID board, and if you see me around, come say hello! Melissa Tiano
Student Representative to the Board 2019-2020
Exciting new work space
W
hile the SCC campus is currently closed to help slow the spread of COVID-19, when the interior design students come back to campus, they will have access to exciting new workspaces. When MCC joined us, they brought with them a state-of-the-art Mac lab and the superior technical skills of CJ Robb. With CJ we have incorporated an Adobe-based digital visualization course into our firstsemester curriculum so students can apply Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign skills throughout their academic journey and bring more value to the marketplace. INT122 - Digital Visualization, is currently offered in an online, eight-week format, and not only a required course for both the AAS in Interior Design and the new Interior Design Technology certificate but a great course for professionals looking to enhance their technical skills. In conjunction with the SCC Architectural Technology, Film, Theater, and Dance programs, we have now completed the One Design Center student workspace, located in the Interior Design and Architectural Technology hallway. The open lab environment features brand new furnishings selected by Interior Design faculty to encourage and accommodate collaboration among students and across the various creative programs. The lab features Mac and PC computer stations, laptop and tablet check-out, plotters, 3D printers, and a laminating machine. The space also accommodates a new lighting lab and furniture for temporary art exhibits or student presentations. There are certainly some challenges to hosting all of our classes virtually this year, but we have made the most of the situation and the technology we are using to support live instruction seems to be working quite well. COVID-19 has proven that while we don’t want to eliminate face-to-face instruction entirely, we can embrace the virtual environment and make modifications to traditional instruction that will improve access to learning. We have made the decision to continue the hybrid delivery of many of our courses beyond COVID-19 restrictions and take advantage of what both in-person and online formats have to offer.
