FROM THE PRESIDENT
How do you help build a physically tactile profession when you take away touch? It’s a strange time to be leading an organization focused on building the professions of its members when lives, careers, and businesses have been completely halted or severely disrupted. As you know, the Arizona North Chapter is all about events, personal growth, legislative growth, client development, and products. It’s about being together, face-toface, exploring and touching all the cool things our industry partners create or have to offer. Our business thrives on the sensations of these firsthand experiences. It inspires us and feeds us, not only with the materials of our trade, but, with the experience, knowledge and enthusiasm we carry forward to share with our clients. The exact opposite of self-quarantining and isolation. As I write this, most everything has been canceled or postponed because of coronavirus. Most have been asked to work from home, everything feeling troubled, surreal, awkward. We have all made the drastic and difficult decisions to postpone, cancel or digitize events. It is a shame. Spring is when design blooms. Between markets, new product releases, Interior Designer for Hire, student events, chapter program, Gala preparation, and Desert Design Days, our calendars are so full and energized. We don’t want to put out a magazine filled with outdated or false information. We are moving far too fast for all to be captured accurately in a publication. Just like the profession of design, we are diverse. Bringing you the most relevant information across many channels. Print, of course, but also, social media and email. Check them all and check them often. Our goal is to keep you inspired and to help you take advantage of the opportunities that present. Just as we have become ever so aware of the health and welfare of our family and friends across the world, our goal is to help you build awareness of how design impact lives and how you impact lives through the products you select and the conversations you have. Our goal is to help you come out of these trying months more relevant and stronger than ever as you continue to build the brand of “you”. Read the stories about members who have looked globally for clients and the industry partners we have the privilege to spotlight. Introduce yourself and welcome our newest members, and, of course, reach out to old friends. Enjoy the new Sponsor Directory, bringing quick access to your fingertips; they do look forward to hearing from you! Note the short stories and mentions intended to expand your awareness of how you can bring value to others as you bring value to your business, and, of course, to strengthen your personal experience with the profession of design.

CHAPTER MEETING
F
ebruary is Advocacy month for the Arizona North Chapter. A chance to discuss what has happened at ASID and specifically talk about our local plans. This year did not disappoint in locations and content! Our speaker, David Lusk of Key Advocacy, the chapter’s advocacy adviser, kicked off the twonight extravaganza at the stunning offices of our very own Designer of Distinction 2019, Lynne Beyer, Allied ASID, and her husband, Ryc Loope, AID and Industry Partner. Prepping for the next evening’s chapter meeting, we began the conversation of advocacy and licensing among the attendees which included members of IIDA and NKBA. Flash forward to night two hosted by our generous Bronze Sponsor, Central Arizona Supply, Industry Partner. Thanks, also, to our Silver Sponsor, Monogram, co-host for the event. They treated us to delicious "home-baked" pizza in the new Monogram Pizza oven. Deron Rensen, provided the wonderful display! There were raffle prizes and goody bags for all the guests in attendance. Guided through a thoughtprovoking evening by David Lusk, attended by leadership from NKBA, IFDA, and IIDA, and our own current and past presidents, Cindy Lewton, ASID, Janelle Schick, ASID, Tabitha Evans, Allied ASID, Amy Strang, Allied ASID, and Susan Solliday, Allied ASID and Industry Partner, as well as many engaged membership, a very productive and ground-breaking conversation was had. With the dialogue only just beginning, a task force was identified with Tabitha Evans, Allied ASID, as chair. Members interested in the task force, may contact info@ azn.asid.org for further information.

Building Strong Foundations is a Process
T
he strength of a building lies in its foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to hold the structure above it and keep its occupants safe from weather and disasters, both natural and otherwise. The larger and more ambitious the structure, the stronger the foundation. Just as the more ambitious the goals you have, the stronger foundations you’ll have to build. Our foundation was formed in 1975 long before many of you were born, gone to college or even considered the business of design. It goes without saying, when we had the opportunity to bring together 38 years of chapter history at the 2020 Presidents’ Forum, it was amazing. We talked. We ate. We drank. We came away with the understanding that time and some of our numbers have passed. That, perhaps, our membership and program needs have changed; and that what was once hard might be easier now, or vice versa. It was reminiscent. It was enlightening. It was passionate. It was always good. Our foundation is strong. Even though we experience a world filled with tragedy and uncertainty, we’ll thrive. Our members, like our chapter leaders, past, present, and yet to come, build strong foundations destined to weather the storm.

Continued Growth for IDFH
O
ur signature program, Interior Designer for Hire, kicked off to a great start February 1. COVID-19 quickly slowed sales and consultation efforts. As caution and closures rose, program sales were extended through the end of May, with time to complete consultations through September. Just like economic losses experienced across the world, the chapter too felt the impact, suffering a 75% reduction in sales revenues from past years. Year after year, the program has continued to grow, and we look forward to when we can resume comfortable public contact. IDFH has helped many designers build their businesses over the years and we have touched countless lives, bringing clients beautiful design and functional spaces. Profits from IDFH remain earmarked for student scholarships and educational programs, including funding of chapter community efforts. Every cloud has a silver lining and while our fundraising goals were not met, our campaign was successful in the promotion of our design community to the public. Thanks to the help of Evolve Marketing, articles were published across the valley in local newspapers and magazines, with radio and TV stations airing a number of interviews about IDFH, ASID, and our community efforts with this year’s charity, The James Walton House. Such exposure increases the brand identity of the Arizona North Chapter of ASID and, ultimately, the value of your ASID appellation. On behalf of the chapter, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Deb Ritchie for the countless hours and care expended in the logistics of this fundraiser year after year, and to all the designers who contribute their time and talents towards the IDFH consultations. ach year the Arizona North Chapter enters the Independent Women’s Luncheon fundraising event to support the Phoenix Art Museum in its efforts to make arts and education programs, exhibits and events available to the community. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, founders were celebrated, and LA-based designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard was the keynote speaker. The only detail that would have made this event more auspicious was if Mr. Bullard were ASID. Have no fear ASID made a stellar showing and contributed to the many dollars raised from the silent auction featuring unique tablescapes created by members of the Valley’s premier design community. 2020-chapter table entry created by Susan Solliday, Allied ASID, Luxe Pros, and President; Leann Fernald, Ornamentation, Industry Partner Rep, and Director at Large; and Shana Peña and her team at Contract Millwork, Industry Partner Rep. ASID Media Sponsor Spotlight
LAUREN STURMAN Modern Luxury Associate Publisher
T
his is the first issue of Desert Design Magazine in which Modern Luxury is the media sponsor and I could not be more excited to be a part of it. During our discussions of how our partnership would work, Susan Solliday informed me that I would be able to address members of ASID directly in this beautiful publication and share my thoughts on the industry, design, and my experiences. Since we’re in the midst of experiencing a global event, it seemed appropriate to discuss design in the context of globetrotting. Having spent a lot more time at home the past few months, I have caught myself reminiscing on past travels and how I would love to go back and visit some of the incredible destinations I’ve had the privilege to experience. Every time I travel and connect with the scenery and people, there is always that moment of, “I don’t ever want to leave.” Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had this same feeling in our own homes? One of the most memorable places I’ve traveled was Santorini, Greece. I fell in love with the stark white architecture and vivid blue roofs high above the Mediterranean Sea. There was a very calming effect the landscape had on me - an effect I have tried to emulate in my home design today. I love the idea that you can take a place that you love; in my case, Santorini, and imbue your space with the same feeling of being there. You get the best of both worlds - the memory of that special place and the reality of transporting that feeling to your home where you live everyday. Travel allows us to experience and appreciate the importance of incorporating cultural design. Embracing different aesthetics and feeling the raw, visceral emotion one gets when entering a balanced space is symbiotic with good design. Picking up unique items to integrate into your design that tell a story can bring a fresh sense of wonder and originality while at the same time reminding you of that special time in your life when you found that unique piece. While not terribly realistic during this global crisis, travel is such a great treasure in life that I think it will be even more appreciated when the geographic and psychological borders reopen and we’re able to move freely across this planet again. Now more than ever, everyone understands the importance of loving their home. I suspect that the design industry will be very busy in the coming months as many will come to the realization that changes need to be made. Thank you again for allowing Modern Luxury to be your partner in this journey. It’s great to pick up new friends and I feel so fortunate to include you all in that category.

o fortunate were we to experience one of the last in-person gatherings before the COVID-19 lockdown in March. Our Donuts&Dialogue meeting at Cactus Stone and Tile in Phoenix was well attended, even as we all discussed how eerily quiet the roads had been driving to the showroom. We were also so very fortunate to have Rachel Simmons, Interior Design Faculty at Scottsdale Community College, as our guest speaker. Rachel was eager to discuss the value of engaging students and emerging professionals and share the perspective from an up and coming designer’s point-of-view. She discussed ways our membership and industry partners can start building foundational relationships at the student level, and various pathways to internship programs with graduates. Rachel described many of the tools and skills emerging professionals are armed with going into the workforce, and how finding ways to partner with them can benefit both the new graduate and the industry partner or seasoned designer. In May, we Introduced the Donuts&Dialogue Drive-Thru Series as a way to engage while staying home and staying safe. The Drive-Thru series is just one of the creative solutions our chapter has initiated to provide value to our membership as we self-quarantine. The Drive-Thru Series, which began May 8th, runs the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month and is a quick 30-minute Industry Partner Spotlight. Using the Zoom platform, we meet virtually for a brief Product Knowledge Presentation and Q&A. Our first Drive-Thru showcased Image Craft and their incredible array of art and graphics capabilities, with a beautiful look-book to demonstrate the remarkable clarity and detail in their work. Their team also offered moving inspiration as they presented all the health, safety, and PPE equipment they are creating and donating to our essential service providers on the front lines. Bravo Image Craft! Membership, we miss you, and hope we can all gather together again soon. Until then, we’ll see you at the Drive-Thru.

INNOVATIVE WINE CELLAR DESIGNS
I
nnovative Wine Cellar Designs is the nation's premier custom full-service wine cellar design, build and install company for homes and businesses in Arizona. They are a family-owned and operated company established in 2002. Sandy Horwitz decided to reinvent himself having owned a California Closets franchise in Phoenix and Scottsdale for many years. After doing some research, Sandy found that wine sales were outselling beer sales and that there was a need for temperature-controlled cellars, especially in the desert, for wine enthusiasts to properly store their growing collections. IWCD's clientele range from the casual collector with hundreds of bottles to the aficionado with thousands of bottles. Over the years, IWCD has expanded into the hospitality industry and has built some of the most amazing wine cellars in many fine restaurants all over the United States. IWCD has been on the cutting edge of moving the direction of the traditional wood wine cellars into the new and exciting contemporary cellars using stainless steel, acrylic, highgloss veneers and exotic woods. Gone are the days of the traditional walk-in cellar. The trend is now the sleek new look of wine walls. IWCD works closely with the design community as well as most of the valley's custom home builders. Their wine cellars can be found in many model homes throughout the valley. IWCD has also expanded their market into Nevada as well as California. The in-house design staff is committed to a seamless experience to create your wine cellar and to provide excellent customer service.

aurent Bernard, a businessman from France was spending a lot of time in the US when he saw an opportunity to help interior designers create custom window solutions for their clients. B&B Blinds and Builder Services has supplied area builders and contractors with window treatment materials for the past 15 years. He then opened Interior Essentials, offering exclusive product lines and management of projects from measure to installation with their own expert staff. The company has grown and now provides custom indoor and outdoor window coverings, draperies, furnishings, fabric, and dĂŠcor to interior designers and homeowners. Products are displayed and demonstrated in two showrooms located in Scottsdale and Gilbert. As an award-winning Industry Partner, Laurent strongly believes in supporting local communities by buying local, selling local, being local, and that is coming from a Frenchman! Clare Frame & & Art Let me begin by offering a huge “thank you” to our local ASID chapter. I have been a member of this community for so many years that I have lost count. I truly appreciate all of the opportunities you have given me in my chosen career as a custom picture framer. Most importantly, some of you have provided me with lifelong camaraderie and mentorship, and I enjoy calling upon you when I am in need of a friendly ear. The birth of Clare Frame & Art was conceived when I bridged my passion for art with my passion for woodworking; the latter began under the tutelage of Mr. Brooks, my junior high school shop teacher, who told me to pursue woodworking as a vocation or advocation. I’m glad I listened to him! For those of you who have used my services, you have come to rely upon me for traditional picture framing and for challenging projects where I often discover solutions during the middle of the night. I enjoy collaborating with designers to achieve the best displays for art and memorabilia.
Visionmakers Visionmakers In 2002, Lane Cook left the international world of supply chain management to found Visionmakers. This leap in his career was risky but proved to be the perfect blessing. Lane’s passion for architecture, history, and building teams have all converged at Visionmakers. After completing his MBA at Thunderbird School of Global Management, Lane worked aboard for various firms. Extensive travel during that time expanded his passion for architecture and fine details. More importantly, Lane feels strongly about the relationships he has developed through the years based on foundational values of integrity, accountability, and teamwork with his employees, suppliers and clients. Visionmakers has grown significantly over time and is excited to be your industry partner. In our Mesa and Scottsdale showrooms, you will find custom architectural products such as natural stone, iconic steel doors and windows, custom lighting, vents and grills. They have a dedicated group of professionals ready to serve you.

Globe-trotting

DESIGNING WITHOUT BORDERS n light of the current global situation we are all facing, we need to find ways to keep a positive outlook on the design industry and continue to give inspiration, hope and encouragement to our members. Featuring the success of our fellow designers keeps hope alive for our future. The entire globe has been affected with a terrible virus that has impacted each and every one of us on some level. Since there is no travel right now, this issue brings an opportunity to showcase designers that have had the experience of taking their design skills around the globe and sharinge their stories. Having the opportunity to take your interior design skills around the globe expands not only your appreciation for different styles of design, but also expands your portfolio to gain notoriety for your design abilities. My interior design experiences have taken me to Washington, Oregon, Chicago, Indiana, Michigan, Maryland, New York, Georgia, Mexico, and Costa Rica. I’ve had the opportunity to use my design knowledge to design in different styles to accommodate each client. When we do get to the point of having the chance to travel again, whether it’s to Sedona or Spain, we should all be inspired by our own members who have gone globetrotting for the sake of design. lobe-trotting and global design go hand-in-hand. I would have to say that most of the design lessons I have learned and inspiration I have found over my career are due to my extensive travels. I have traveled to Japan, Thailand, Israel, Jordan, the Mediterranean, and all over Europe. This has led to 20 years designing residences in New York, Seattle, Arizona, Cairo, Egypt, Florida, California, and Colorado. I have found that great design is really due to the relationship you build with your client. They need to trust you and let you into their world so that you can create an environment that they will love for years. People often ask how I got my client in Egypt; it was because of my internet presence. They did a google search and up I came. Ultimately is was my website they liked, in particular an image of a room with floor to ceiling red velvet drapes and gold damask wallpaper. Before I knew it we were on a 3-week-long exclusive shopping trip to New York City. My ability to understand and respect their culture helped me win the project. The knowledge I gained from traveling to Egypt prior to meeting them gave me the knowledge of design aesthetics, cultural standards, and fiscal prioritization to properly design their home. Their love of saturated color was something that was particularly fascinating to me as I have always loved color and the use of it in design, but at the time the trend was white on white-on-white-on-white in New York. Should you choose to extend your brand across state lines or even across oceans you really need to understand the shipping aspect. The climate has changed and manufacturers will often delay production of a custom piece until you provide all the shipping information, unlike in the past when production started with fabric being delivered and deposits paid. The clients will not have this information and will not understand the delays so you need to educate them by being prepared with quotes for shipping, with both timing and cost. It can easily take an item six weeks on a container to reach a destination, or one week via air freight, but the cost difference is exponential. Your social media and internet presence will be incredibly important now especially with the current Covid-19 pandemic. Make sure you invest in a fabulous website, and keep in front of prospective clients with fresh new posts and blog articles. Tag the cities you want to target and do focused advertising via Facebook. Luxepros.com is always willing to publish original design content and they have followers from all over the globe. My best advice would be to travel as often as you can; the world has so many beautiful places that were built centuries before the USA, and the inspiration is incredible. We are in a visual and tactile business, and we need to see and touch those things that inspire us. The only way to do that is to get on a plane and go. Bon Voyage! or those that don’t know me very well, my design career actually started on the commercial side after graduating from Arizona State University. I worked on restaurant, retail and tenant improvement projects and never imagined I would focus on residential design. Yet, almost twenty years later, here I am! I love working with residential clients. I love the relationships and friendships that develop and am blessed to be involved in a variety of projects that keep me excited about being a designer every day. Although I have not specifically sought out work outside of Arizona over the years, I have had the opportunity to work both out of the state and out of the country. The majority of this work has come from repeat clientele who want to bring us in on something new. Working with a client for a second time is really one of my favorite types of projects. I worked with them on a second home and now they’re ready to tackle their main residence or vice versa. Either way, it is fun to have a second opportunity. You already know each other and, as a designer, you are already familiar with their likes and dislikes, tendencies and what makes them tick. You can dive right into the heart of the design. This is also the easiest way to start working out of your region. So, if you aren’t sure where to get started, talk to your existing clients and see if there is something you might be able to help them with! We have also gotten some of our out-of-region work from social media. Be sure to let your clientele and followers know you are ready to hit the road for the right project. I have worked on spec homes in Hawaii, residences in North Carolina, Colorado, Michigan, Tennessee, a two-story closet in Texas, a yacht in Newport Beach and a residence clubhouse in Los Cabos San Lucas. As with any other project, they all come with new possibilities and new challenges. I think one key to a successful remote project is understanding the aesthetic and the culture in the area so the project can speak to it. For example, at our Memphis project, our clients were near Beale Street and the heart of the music scene, so in the foyer we created fun guitar artwork as a nod to the area. In our Los Cabos project, we really tried to capture the spirit of the culture and source local vendors and craftsman that would infuse authenticity into the aesthetic. One challenge when working out of your area is not having “go to” vendors to depend on. I have found amazing new sources as a result and have also had some challenging experiences. Where possible I have tried to get referrals from local designers who have worked in the area or contacted the local ASID chapter. Often times that has been a success. We also have had to familiarize ourselves with local codes. Sometimes, you are just on your own and have to do the best you can to be your client’s advocate despite any challenges you might face! Another issue is not always being able to visit the job site as often as you would like or even at all after the initial walk through and scope of work is set. It is critical to take an overabundance of photos, video and dimensions; anything you think you might need, and then some. Overall, I have really enjoyed and learned from each and every project outside of Arizona and look forward to whatever the next adventure might be!

he world never seems so small as when you fully embrace its largesse–as you remove boundaries and obstacles, intimidation and limitations likewise fall away, and as they do, the mind is free to truly flourish creatively and artistically. I have always considered myself a global citizen, an extension of a spirit of adventure and curiosity that extends all the way back to my childhood. My parents emigrated from Germany, and I grew up in locations as varied as Chicago, Coastal Maine, and Wisconsin. My family built the houses we lived in, and I have fond recollections of summers spent shingling the roof and installing flooring with my siblings, fostering an early interest in design. Some of my earliest designs were done for historic homes along the east coast–structures that were sometimes hundreds of years old, and as time went on, I had the opportunity to travel further abroad–to China, Egypt, Australia–the history and richness of culture having a profound effect. Each year, I make the trip to Milano for Salone del Mobile, the annual design fair. Milan is the design capital of the world, and the best place to experience the latest innovations in design. I consider myself immensely fortunate to have had exposure to wide-ranging aesthetics, a treasure trove of memories and moments that have influenced and informed my philosophy along the way. With such a global mindset and thirst for a challenge, I feel grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to work in design on projects stretching across the U.S., from Manhattan to Manhattan Beach, and down into Costa Rica. Each project has presented its own unique stylistic demands, but the reward is well worth it, as my design horizons have been broadened by the experience. I have found that inspiration for each design stems from two sources: the clients I’m working with, and the architecture of the dwelling itself. Every corner of the world has its own distinct flavor and essence expressed in the architecture of its buildings, such that honoring the craftsmanship of the structure and its surroundings can’t help but serve as the framework of design. For instance, the penthouse in an historic Manhattan high-rise inspired a design reflective of the cosmopolitan city, incorporating references to Regency and Art Deco. While the Costa Rican project, with its incredible, expansive views that are the heart and soul of the space, suggested a design that drew on the natural elements found in the surrounding environs to create a more relaxed ambiance. Ultimately, the design should feel like a natural extension of its environs–a direct reflection of the people, the culture, the environment, something meant to wear as well with time as the structure itself. After all, great design is more than pilfering ideas from Pinterest or clipping pictures out of Dwell. The best design is born out of a mind-body connection that takes full advantage of all the senses. It requires a working knowledge of aesthetic and style through the ages and skillful incorporation of innovation in the industry. Equally as important, though, is an empathy that allows you to bring it all together in a vision tailored for each client. And of course, you need the right team of people working in the same direction to manifest that vision. It’s an alchemy that, combined with the daring to open the door and the willingness to step through and take hold of the right opportunities, can carry you around the world, leading from one incredible adventure to the next. 2020 ASID Student Charette Competition
T
he 2020 ASID Student Charette design competition was held on February 22 to benefit Project Veterans Pride – The James Walton Home. The James Walton Home is a certified Phoenix, Arizonabased qualified Charitable Organization, led by Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Dr. Christeen Verchot. The mission of this organization, founded by Dr. Verchot, is to have every homeless veteran gain back their pride and dignity so that they can return to society as a self-sufficient and productive member once again. On a rainy Saturday morning, design students from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Mesa Community College, Phoenix Community College and Scottsdale Community College, gathered at the SCC Campus to rethink and solve design issues of the current gathering space of as many as twenty veteran residents. Industry Partners from Tabarka Studio and Dunn-Edwards® offered the participants lunch and refreshments. Dr. Christeen Verchot and PVP Board member and US Navy Veteran Johnny Walker provided personal inspiration as they guided team-participants through a digital tour of the space. Because the installation of the actual project will rely on donations of materials and labor, the students developed a preliminary space plan. Design and materials composition considered durability, comfort factors and the flexibility of reconfiguration. Judges for the event included Angelica Henry, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Dr. Christeen Verchot ASID, Debbie Samartzis, ASID, Dede Radford, Allied ASID & Industry Partner and Jenny Slingerland, Allied ASID. These professional designers provided comments on the work of each project. And the winners: Jennifer Clancy, Marwah Asad and Shatha Altoyan of Team Desert Pride. “So many great ideas were presented, can we blend them?”, asked Dr.Verchot. The next phase of the project will involve students working alongside professional designers in real-world circumstances as they finalize the design for presentation to Dr.Verchot. Arizona North Chapter members will then turn to the design community and industry partners to provide materials and labor for installation of the project. The students will stay involved throughout the project. Another real-world aspect that has since occurred are the special precautions for residents’ health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic that must now be incorporated into the design. Project Veterans Pride – The James Walton Home “We’ve had to make accommodations in our current common areas to receive limited guests and to manage the comings-and-goings of our residents”, said Dr.Verchot. It is commendable that she reported four residents found work during the crisis in essential businesses in Phoenix, adding to her 90% success rate of veterans returned to our community with an optimistic outlook on their future. Local businesses that have already expressed an interest in participating as donors are Thoma-Holec Design, Dunn Edwards, Salt Creek Furniture and Monterrey Tile. We thank these businesses and volunteers, Michele Hartley, Normalinda Sidney, Arik Spaulding and Rachel Simmons for helping with this student event.

Incoming Program Director Scottsdale Community College
T
his fall Scottsdale Community College will present some very exciting changes. As of July 2020, Chuck Cooper has been promoted to Applied Sciences Division Chair, while I will become the new Program Director for Interior Design. We also welcome an additional faculty member, CJ Robb, who joins us from Mesa Community College. Scottsdale Community College (SCC) is the designated site for the new Center of Excellence for Interior Design. Effective Fall 2020, Mesa Community College (MCC) will discontinue offering Interior Design courses. Faculty, funding and program assets are transferring from MCC to SCC. Combined with SCC’s resources, our faculty and college leadership anticipate a better learning experience for interior design students through greater access to course offerings and program resources. The Center of Excellence model provides richer learning experiences for students through enhanced collaboration among faculty, providing a stellar combination of industry experience with cutting edge instruction. In addition to this exciting merger, Scottsdale Community College officially releases a number of new certificates to accompany our associate’s degree in Interior Design. We reveal a new “third-year” Rachel Simmons Professional Interior Design certificate, which prepares our graduates and practicing designers for NCIDQ exam acceptance and completion. We will also offer certificates for Interior Design Technology, Kitchen and Bath Design, and Interior Merchandising and Home Staging. The safety of our students and employees is our highest concern in these days of COVID uncertainty. Accordingly, and barring any new developments over the summer, we are adjusting our fall schedule to present many of our classes in either On-Your-Time or Live-Online formats as well as offering many classes in 8-week time frames. A limited number of classes that require face-to-face time (i.e. studio and CAD courses) are being scheduled for optional face-to-face open lab instruction at the start of the semester and moving to a complete remote format after a period of time. Our new cutting-edge Revit classroom and One Design collaborative lab are expected to be completed by the fall semester. I’d like to thank all of the SCC and MCC Interior Design faculty and students who have gone above and beyond to ensure the success of interior design education during these uncertain times. I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to our interior design industry partners who have agreed to help supply material kits, provide virtual tours and presentations, and provide other distance-related learning opportunities. Class of 2020 Graduating During the Pandemic
W
e can hear it now, “Ladies and gentlemen, let us congratulate the graduating class of 2020!” Well, for the majority of us, we will not hear those words in a crowded stadium with our closest friends and family cheering us on. We can only look forward to receiving our diplomas in the mail rather than walking across a crowded stage to collect it. In times such as these, it is understandable why we won’t be able to experience these milestones, and it is valid not to feel “okay”. For most of us, the graduating class of 2020 will only be celebrating virtually in the comfort of our own homes. After the end of spring break in March, we were all shocked about how quickly the Covid-19 virus was spreading. On March 16, we were all told we needed to stay home for the foreseeable future and finish classes online. Two weeks later, school officials notified students that classes would no longer resume in person. For some, this news was an extension of spring break, but for others who would be graduating in five weeks, it was a somber feeling as we knew we would never step foot into the classroom again. During the weeks of transitioning from in-class learning to virtual learning with teachers through Google and sorting out all the final details prior to graduation, the last semester was difficult, to say the least. Friends from classes and teachers were missed. The excitement of those last days before graduation was not felt. Sadness accompanied our joy. This was a story that will go in the history books, that’s for certain. Another truth is that future students will probably be some of the most flexible and adaptable as we adjust to new ways of learning. As of right now, events and activities for the fall are on hold as school administration and state and local governments sort out the safe return to campuses. Please check the ASID website for updates. We hope to see everyone again in the coming months. Until then, stay safe and healthy! #classof2020 MELISSA TIANO
