FRO M THE PRESID ENT
2016 – 2017 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
NEW YEAR NEW OPPORTUNITIES
W
E AS AN ORGANIZATION BELIEVE THAT design transforms lives. ASID serves the full range of the interior design profession and practice through the Society’s programs, networks, and advocacy. We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from design to social responsibility, well-being, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide. We all continue to affect the lives, health and welfare of our clients by utilizing our experience and education. The 2017 focus of your ASID Board is to provide support, educational opportunities and tools to help you manage and grow your business. Traditionally, a focus on updating business and marketing plans comes with the new year. As entrepreneurs, we have many responsibilities… sales, public relations, accounting, marketing, legal, budgeting, etc. This leaves little time and energy for the core of our business – design. Adding headcount or hiring consultants to fill these roles is a luxury that may not fit the budget; therefore, the responsibility falls on you. The focus of ASID to enhance education includes: •C EU business tech classes including strategic planning, budgeting, marketing, social media and sales training; •P artnering with Steelcase to develop a series of business classes for emerging professionals; • Online business and marketing training available at ASID.org and; •E ducational opportunities in the area of Wellness in Building design. (ASID, in partnership with Delos, brought the discussions to our chapter at our Well Building Standard CEU in October. The positive response we received from this presentation showed us there is a thirst for data and knowledge and a desire for further understanding the value of health and welfare in the built environment.) In addition to education and development, we understand the importance of promoting ASID members to the public. Our annual Design for Hire fundraiser will be advertised in the February 2017 Phoenix Home & Garden issue.Volunteering your time to Design for Hire not only benefits the chapter but creates public awareness of your company. Every client visited as a Design for Hire representative designer is an opportunity to sign new business and benefit from referrals. If you are interested in volunteering or receiving detailed information, please contact Deb Ritchie, Chapter Administrator, or login to asidaznorth.org and click on Find A Designer. MONTHLY MEETINGS RECAP SEPTEMBER
LET’S GET RECOGNIZED
T
HE SEPTEMBER CHAPTER MEETING ON THURSDAY September 15th, 2016 was located at the La-Z-Boy showroom in Scottsdale. The sprawling showroom perfectly showcased everything La-Z-Boy has to offer – from the well-known recliner to beautiful vignettes of sitting rooms and dens. The program began with a heart-felt thank you from the board, each recognizing their committees and the members of their committees that make all that our chapter accomplishes possible. After each committee was gifted with their certificate of appreciation and photographed with the board, ASID Arizona North’s very own Lynne Beyer gave a fascinating presentation called “The Butterfly Effect.” Lynne guided us through her career path and timeline to show all of the causes and effects that led her to be the designer she is today. The evening was filled with appreciation, comradery, and a small take away – everything happens for a reason. Thank you to all of our members who take the time to attend our Chapter meetings and engage in our programs. A special thank you goes out to the members who volunteer and willingly dedicate their time and energy into making our chapter great every day. La-Z-Boy, we can’t thank you enough for hosting our Chapter in your beautiful showroom. As Arizona North closes out the year, we remember all of the good times and look forward to creating more in the next year. We welcome our new board to lead us through the next year and say thank you to the board members that will not return – President Keith Stanton and Director at Large Paula Quan. Thank you both for everything you do for our Chapter.

UR OCTOBER CHAPTER MEETING ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 13TH, 2016, was located at the Scottsdale Design center in the Alyshaan showroom and Sherwin Williams store. The design center proved to be the perfect location for the color revealing occasion of the year. Members were encouraged to move through the showrooms and were invited to help themselves to food and beverage while mingling. There were opportunities for those attending Colormix to sign up for the Paint Your Way to Colormix canvas challenge or designing a wreath for Aunt Rita’s Red Brunch. The Paint Your Way to Colormix canvas challenge offered volunteers the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the Colormix palettes and create art with a random combination of colors. The wreaths that were created benefitted Aunt Rita’s Foundation; which is dedicated to the elimination of, and suffering from, HIV and AIDS. Laurie Clark gave her annual Colormix CEU after we welcomed our new Arizona North Chapter board members. spectacular1and6/8/16 full of energy. was Page a great1 kick off to a new year for the Arizona North DesignThe ad party June was 2016:Layout 11:41ItAM Chapter. NOVEMBER
PAINT YOUR WAY TO COLORMIX CANVAS CHALLENGE
N
OVEMBER’S CHAPTER MEETING ON THURSDAY November 17, 2016, took place at the new Studio 41 showroom in North Scottsdale. The showroom sparkled from the mega chandelier in the foyer to all of the faucets, cabinet pulls, and tubs. At registration, voting cards for the Paint Your Way to Colormix canvas challenge were handed out for attendees to vote on their favorite painting in each palette. The paintings were stationed around the showroom and grouped by palette. The mini art galleries sparked discussions and friendly arguments over subject and color usage. The program then shifted from art to education as Jason McNeely from Hansgrohe presented his tantalizing CEU, “It’s A Thirsty World.” Jason’s presentation confirmed the need for conserving water and why water is essential to life. After a quick Q & A session, the Paint Your Way to Colormix canvas challenge winners were revealed! November’s Chapter meeting was one for the books. We have amazing artists among us as well as new information to keep us thinking about ways to improve our world. Congratulations to our canvas challenge winners! Sherman Unkefer continued on page 8

DECEMBER
HOLIDAY PARTY
O
N A CLEAR DECEMBER EVENING, OVERLOOKING Tempe Town Lake in the amazing Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA), our chapter kicked off the bustling holiday season with a night of enjoying old friends and making new ones. The TCA was a perfect venue to celebrate and relax with good food and good company in the spirit of giving. Three walls of glass from floor to ceiling provided a dramatic view of the lake illuminated by lighting from the distant bridges spanning the water. Over 130 guests enjoyed the background instrumentals provided by the talented musician Jimmi T Wilson. It was great to see so many happy faces including seven past presidents and a myriad of former ASID Board members. It was also fun for guests adorn the mini trees which were donated to UMOM to brighten up their shelters for the holidays. We are incredibly lucky to have such generous members, from the guests who donated gift cards and purchased raffle tickets to our sponsors providing gifts and prizes. Thank you Cambria for generously sponsoring the beverage bars, artisan cookies and raffle baskets. A huge thank you also to our holiday party raffle gift sponsors including Alyshaan, ProSource, Buffalo Collection and Hansgrohe. The holidays were filled with fun, family, charity and creativity this year. From all of the ASID volunteers, we wish you a happy, healthy 2017. continued on page 10

FESTIVAL OF TREES
F
E S T I VA L O F T R E E S I S P H O E N I X C H I L D R E N ’ S Hospital’s premier holiday event showcasing spectacular, one-of-a-kind Christmas trees designed by accomplished local interior designers. In support of Phoenix Children’s Hospital, a talented group of ASID designers teamed up in the name of the ASID Design for Hire program to design and create a holiday tree for Festival of Trees. Design for Hire is our annual chapter fundraiser developed to generate funds supporting student scholarships and chapter education while introducing the public to the importance of hiring a professional designer. Our gratitude for their generous donation of time goes to the Festival of Trees Design for Hire team: Leann Fernald (Chairman), Monica Sullivan Allied ASID, Leah Tuttleman Allied ASID and Lynette Willett ASID; with a special thank you to Beth Donlan Allied ASID for her donation of decorative materials and Michelle Pierce with Moxie Design Studios for her design and decorating contribution. In addition to participating in Festival of Trees, our design team donates many hours of their time to Design for Hire. Our designers conceptualized an elegant, stately tree that would captivate the imagination of the young and old. In honor of Shakespeare (this year being the 400 year anniversary of his death), this tree was a Christmas twist on a classic and entitled, “A Midwinter Night’s Dream.” This vintage-style tree integrated the magic of love and the duality between fantasy and reality as reflected in the original prose. The tree was adorned with fairies and forest creatures and asparkle with a mixture of soft metallics and snow covered botanicals. The crowning glory was the custom metal moon and star with streaming fairies designed by Monica Sullivan Allied ASID with Moxie Design Studios and manufactured by Hinkley’s Lighting. In addition, there were several other one-of-a-kind holiday trees designed and donated by ASID members. As expected of our talented designers, a unique and eclectic assortment of trees included themed forest scenes, an avant-garde bridal procession, homage to Pokemon, and a stylized tree of artistic millwork. Thousands of dollars were raised for Phoenix Children’s Hospital to help provide critical new programs, purchase essential equipment, conduct cutting-edge research, and ensure that each and every child who needs treatment receives treatment. We are so proud of the generous spirit inherent in our members.

ASID MEDIA SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT
INDOOR/OUTDOOR LIVING HIGH ON CONSUMERS’ WISHLISTS BY KAROL D EWUL F NI C KE L L IND USTRY PARTNE R ED I TOR, P H O E N I X H O M E & G A R D E N
W
HEN WE SURVEYED SUBSCRIBERS OF PHOENIX HOME & GARDEN ABOUT THEIR INTEREST IN indoor/outdoor living, we learned that they love to entertain outdoors. In fact, 33 percent said they use alfresco spaces to host guests on a weekly basis. An additional 38 percent entertain seasonally, and 20 percent said it is a monthly occurrence in their homes. That’s a lot of gathering, dining and playing under the Arizona sky. This prevalence for outdoor entertaining helps explain why the dividing line between spaces inside and out continues to blur in Southwest homes. As consumers increasingly request their indoor living areas flow seamlessly onto exterior patios, courtyards and lawns, design professionals have found ways to make doors, windows and even walls disappear, physically uniting the two environments. And as materials and products that stand up to sun, moisture, dirt and extreme temperatures look, feel and perform more like those typically used only in protected conditions, designers can select the same or similar flooring, furnishings, lighting and accessories for both areas, visually joining the two. Another indicator of our readers’ growing interest in outdoor living is their wishlists for home improvements. While 10 percent shared that they already have an outside kitchen (a percentage that is greater than the national statistic), another 13 percent said it was the top outdoor amenity they would like to add. This data point is why we chose the topic for our January 2017 issue’s “Designer Insights” with ASID Arizona North Chapter President Janet Jackson. In that article, we talk about the best location and materials for open-air kitchens, as well as essential components and the latest trends. In conversations with interior designers, architects and kitchen designers about indoor/ outdoor living, we have found many different approaches and philosophies. Some professionals see the need for editing so interior/exterior spaces are joined but not duplicated. Others envision even more complex au naturel environments with over-the-top creature comforts and resortlike luxuries. MAKERS OF FINE SOFT FURNISHINGS As always, the consumer will have the final say. DESERT DESIGN WINTER 2017
OF ALL THE THINGS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DESIGNING OUTDOOR living spaces, I believe one of the most important things is to make these spaces an extension of your home. Just like the interior, the space should be a reflection of the client. Everything from the custom furnishings to the material selections can be tailored to your client’s wants and needs. In the foothills of East Mesa, many of my clients want to enjoy the beauty of their natural desert surroundings. Their landscape projects often consist of enhancing the natural scape, having to keep in mind natural washes and plant requirements. Arizona, while beautiful, is also one of the harshest environments for plant life. Our stunning ocotillo, clustered barrel cactus, and looming saguaro are all majestic, but are also natural survivors. Holding excess water within their cells and having a built in defense system are just a couple examples of what it takes to survive the Arizona desert. However, not every one of our clients wants a cactus garden, so knowing sun exposure, growth rates, and plant combinations can be incredibly helpful. I enjoy using pots as an opportunity to plant seasonal flowers to soften the desert and add in some color!

O
Once you have an idea of what types of plants you will be working with, it is important to design your watering system and drainage accordingly. If you have the opportunity, I love to design my watering system to go under any pavers or tile flooring and up into my pots. This creates a seamless look, and keeps the water rings (formed by the pots draining) from damaging the flooring. Think of this as the much loved floor outlet in the middle of the seating arrangement! It is also important to have a great partner in landscape that can plan this with you and program the zones on your irrigation system to keep all elements of your landscape healthy. During this planning phase it is also a good time to think about lighting. Lighting creates ambiance when directed on plants or architectural features, or for task purposes such as lighting a walkway or entry. Either form makes for a stunning space during our desert nights! Just like an interior you need to consider all of the surroundings. Landscape design is not just about plants. Part of the beauty is creating a livable space that your clients can enjoy. In Arizona, outdoor entertaining is popular most of the year, so meeting the clients’ wants and needs is very important. How do they intend to use the space? Do they need a custom seating furniture arrangement or a built in kitchen? As with interiors, it is important when designing exteriors to consider the elements and principles of interior design. Are your selections the proper scale for the size of the home? When working with large homes, custom pieces are required

Entries Wanted!
2017 ASID Design Excellence Competition Looking at our Best in Show winning projects could be intimidating, but shouldn’t be. Our design competition provides opportunities for projects of all sizes, types and budgets. Keep in mind, several recent winners won the first time they entered; you won’t know until you enter! There are categories for commercial projects and product design, as well as for residential projects. High-resolution professional photographs are a requirement in the process because our first-place winners are published in Phoenix Home & Garden and Phoenix magazines. If you are concerned about the cost of having your projects professionally photographed, think of it as an investment in your business. Good photos are also essential for effective marketing (website, social media, brochures, etc.). Check the website on February 2, 2017, for our special session to help guide you through the application process, submission requirements and to answer any questions you may have. This year marks the first time that all award entries will be processed online with an easy to followapplication process enabling you to make adjustments. The 2017 online awards entry link is posted onthe Home Page at www.asidaznorth.org. The cutoff for all entries is Friday, March 31. Winners will be announced at the ASID Arizona North Design Excellence Gala in August.
How is the Competition Judged?
to create the grandeur demanded by the space. Where is your focal point? In many cases it could be the view, but perhaps it is a fireplace, water feature, or doorway. Have fun with these areas, they can be the wow factor of the space. When designing outdoor spaces I also like to think of how to make the space feel intimate. Pergolas are a great way to add an enclosed feeling to a space that would otherwise be in the open. A balance of negative space is also very important to me. Not all walls need to be blank. Growing a beautiful bougainvillea or jasmine up a trellis can create a natural art piece. At the end of the project you get to have fun with the accessories. Small pots with flowers, statues, and candelabras are just a few ways to personalize the space. Once the finishing touches are in place, the only thing left to do is to take a deep breath and enjoy.
• E ach year all entries submitted are distributed to ASID Chapters in other states that judge the competition. The entries are anonymous with no client, interior designer/firm or architect identification. • Each entry is judged individually by category with a numerical rating. Occasionally, there are ties, Honorable Mentions or no winners in a category – it’s all based on the scores submitted by the judges. We look forward to seeing what new and exciting projects will be submitted.

DESERT DESIGN WINTER 2017
O
Outdoor living has become a key element in both residential and commercial design over the past decade. Emphasis on making interior and exterior spaces flow together is quickly becoming the standard and has become particularly important to maximize the usability and increase property value.
There are several key steps when addressing exterior spaces; the first is knowing how your clients want to use the space. • Determine day-to-day exterior living habits. • H ow they entertain – Do they have parties or small, intimate gatherings…or both. • Do they want a designated outdoor dining area. • Clarify what type of seating and lounging areas they want. • Determine what materials work best and make sure they are aware of any ongoing maintenance and make sure to use only exterior grade fabrics. • Outdoor food preparation – Does your client prefer to have a built-in BBQ area or bar? Make sure that you address the spatial and seating requirements, equipment, storage and exterior appliances such as refrigerators. Use the forces of nature to enhance their living environment and create natural areas to gather or create natural conversation. There are amazing new ventless fireplace products that have come to the market that minimize the expense of adding expensive framing, venting and finishes. Find ways to utilize unexpected spaces for a secret garden area that is an added bonus to any design. • Fireplace – Both custom built-in or freestanding fireplaces become a focal point. • Firepit – A firepit is a natural gathering spot for family and friends. • Fountains – Great for sound and adding ambiance to any setting. • Raised or designated gardens – Incorporate gardens into the exterior design. Logistics…remember that good design is detail oriented. • Space Planning – Determine specific furniture layouts • Shade – Find out where they want shade. Do they prefer a permanent structure, umbrellas, or sails. • Electrical – Make sure that you address any specific electrical requirements for electronic ignition fireplaces, charging stations, heaters and around food preparation areas. • Lighting – Lighting is key to any good design. If you are fortunate to be able to design a covered space during construction, carefully locate lighting over seating areas to maximize the usability and visual impact. WINTER 2017 DESERT DESIGN

If there is a built-in or freestanding BBQ, make sure that they have wall, countertop or ceiling mounted lighting for functionality. Use landscape lighting to enhance the environment as well. • Heaters – There are some remarkable outdoor heaters available, both surface-mounted as well as integrated into ceilings. When planning for heaters, remember that there are extensive electrical requirements involved. Freestanding propane heaters are a great alternative. • Misting Systems – A misting system is a wonderful part of any year-round living environment. However, as great as they are, they require upkeep so don’t forget to address water filtration and locate the pump away from gathering areas. Create beautiful spaces that are inviting and serve the purpose that they are intended. If you have an outdoor bar, make it lively and fun. The secret garden should be warm and intimate. Use accessories to accent, or define spaces and enhance the atmosphere. • Potted plants – Incorporate colorful seasonal flowers and fragrant flowers or herbs that can be used for cooking, but also provide opportunity to enhance the sensory experience.

• Color and Materials – Tie the interior and exterior spaces together through the use of color and materials, such as hardscape. • Landscape lighting – Incorporate strategic landscape lighting to enhance your design. • Landscaping – Coordinate the landscape design to maximize privacy and splendor. • Accessories – Don’t be afraid to use outdoor accessories to create personality. Candles, lanterns and unique finds only serve to make a space special and personal. C

INTERIOR DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
JOI PRATER
Joi Prater, Allied ASID Prater Interior Design
I
N NOVEMBER OF 2010, JOI PRATER OF PRATER INTERIORS MOVED TO ANOTHER STATE AND STARTED AN interior design business in one of the worst recessions in recent history. Although she grew up in Arizona, she left Phoenix in 1981 and never looked back. Joi moved back to Arizona in 2010 when the economy and construction were at a standstill. “I never thought I would live in Arizona again. Everyone thought I was crazy for leaving San Diego. In hindsight, it was the best decision I ever made.” Originally Prater left Phoenix to study Horticulture, Art, and Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona in Tucson. “I always admired people, who at a young age, knew what they wanted to do in life. I was never one of those people. I’ve had many jobs and have worn many hats before finding my way into Interior Design”. After college, Joi moved to San Diego to work as a Design Consultant for an interior plantscaping company. “I was terribly shy and quiet, and struggled in sales.” Joi says she had a passion for designing captivating interior commercial and residential spaces with green and blooming plants. “It was fun and it made everyone happy.” Joi transitioned into the floral industry, designing florals for weddings and events. It was hard, physical work, but very rewarding. One year she decorated Jenny Craig’s house. It took 50 people and an entire week to do it. Joi feels her work experience ultimately lead her into Interior Design. “It was a natural progression. I realized I was good at enhancing environments and wanted to take my passion further.” At this point, Prater reached out to the ASID Chapter in San Diego to inquire about a profession in Interior Design. It was by chance, the person who called her back, was the Interior Design Department Head at San Diego Mesa College. Within a week, Joi was enrolled full-time in their design program and from where she graduated two years later. “Many times, I’ve taken on projects where I have a learning curve.” Joi feels the best way to grow is to constantly challenge yourself by taking on complicated and more involved projects. “Change is a good self-check. It keeps you on your toes and keeps you current.” The move to Arizona was a huge risk that gave her renewed energy to start over and somewhat “reinvent” herself. Prater feels very fortunate to be a part of the ASID Arizona North Chapter and says the Chapter was very welcoming and helped her to establish a design firm here. “The vendors, the reps, and Interior Designers are very helpful and I couldn’t have done it without them here. Construction has taken off and I see opportunity everywhere in the coming year.” Joi reminds us to focus on our passion and follow your heart. Never be afraid to try something different and take a risk. It comes with great rewards.

I
T HAS BEEN A JAM-PACKED FEW MONTHS FOR students of ASID! Since starting classes in the Fall, we have been recruiting like crazy and growing our membership as well as our presence in all the schools. There have been several special events, contests, and volunteer opportunities. Through all the extra curricular activities and events, students have shined bright in the local design community and had so much fun doing it all! One of the premier events early in the Fall was the Student Kick-Off & Vignette Competition, which was held at Jonathan Adler. There was an outstanding turnout from each school, including NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY, whose students drove down that afternoon and turned right back around to Flagstaff after the event. We split into small, diverse groups at the event to discuss challenges and successes of leading or being a part of a student organization. After the open table forum, groups then created a vignette design out of a
console or cabinet using objects at Jonathan Adler and were judged by AZ North board members. A bi-annual contest called “Stage-Off ” at SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE allows students to submit before and after photos of a project in three categories - Remodeling, Staging, and Sustainable Design. In October, SCC students participated and they received entries in both Remodeling and Staging. The winners were Lana Mitchell for an amazing kitchen transformation, and Sherman Unkefer for a bedroom refresh. “The bedroom’s prior design lacked personality and color. It was quite dark and resembled a poorly decorated model home. The goal of the new design was to make the bedroom much more luxurious and visually intriguing. This was accomplished through careful selection of paint colors, antiques, custom furnishings, and unique accessories. The result is a timeless, elegant, and relaxing retreat.” Students and recent grads dominated the ColorMix painted canvas contest in November. There were two winners from SCC: Sherman Unkefer and Ashley Decker. Meanwhile at THE ART INSTITUTE, a small group of Interior Design students led by Regina Underwood has been remodeling spaces at a local charitable organization. In doing so, they gain experience with a real life interior design project that they are able to use for their portfolios. Additionally, their time and efforts are received with much gratitude and that’s always a great feeling! As you read this, students will be leaping into a new semester. ASID has yet another full calendar to help them develop and learn through more unique, fun experiences, networking, competitions, and educational workshops with their peers. 2017, here we are!
