237 Years of History – At the National Museum of the Marine Corps in a field in Northern Virginia that is very similar to the French countryside of Belleau Wood. The significance of Belleau Wood is it resulted in more Marine casualties in three weeks than all the casualties the Corps sustained in its first 143 years. But in the end, the Marines prevailed. More than 3,000,000 people have visited the Museum since it opened in 2006. Those who have been here more than once would agree they see something different each time they visit. With activities, events, and exhibits happening throughout the year and new features being added in the months and years to come, there’s always something new to see at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The National Museum of the Marine Corps is at 18900 Jefferson Davis Highway in Triangle, Va. and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except December 25. Admission and parking are free. Despite being a landmark in Triangle, Virginia that motorists have driven by for six years now, some folks have yet to visit the large glass and metal structure pointing skyward over Interstate-95. This towering beacon of American history is the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The National Museum of the Marine Corps is fairly new among America’s museum elite. It opened in November of 2006, in time to celebrate 231 years of Marine Corps history. With exhibits that display uniforms to weaponry to cast figures, the Museum tells the Marine Corps story—and how it is interwoven throughout American history. Some of these artifacts may date back to the year 1775, or the early 1900’s, or yesterday. It captures the experience young recruits go through on their first day of boot camp. It takes you back to our nation’s early years, from the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli. Whether blood was shed on the sands of Iwo Jima, the fields of Virginia, or the jungles of Vietnam, Marines have always answered the call, and the Museum tells that story.
Visitors of the Museum see that fighting spirit the moment they walk through the front doors. The words chizzled in the marble walls of Leatherneck Gallery exude triumph, as though they want to come to life and shout “Charge!” Rising out of the middle of Leatherneck Gallery is a 250-foot spar reaching the highest point of the Museum. It’s positioned at an angle to evoke the flag raising of Iwo Jima. The Museum tells the Marine Corps story starting with its inception at Philadelphia’s Tun Tavern in 1775 to its military and humanitarian missions of today. One can see the evolution of weaponry over the years, the change in uniforms, the faces of those who fought for us. These exhibits are just a small part of the more than 60,000 uniforms, weapons, vehicles, medals, flags, aircraft, works of art and other artifacts in the Museum’s collections. One of the new exhibits commanding attention is the battle of Belleau Wood in the World War I gallery. The exhibit includes a short video of this battle against the Germans, and the participants are actual active-duty Marines. The production took place one hot week in the summer of 2009

B-THRIFTY participates in Federal program for Veterans

While it may difficult to imagine, it is true: there are men and women who have fought to protect our country living in the woods in Prince William County. Some have combat experience dating back to the Vietnam War, while others have served in the more recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) attempts to locate these homeless veterans and provides services through case management and clinical services. The local case manager serving Prince William County is April Ballard, LCSW. Through connection with April, B-Thrifty has found a way to make a small contribution to improving the quality of life for some of these individuals. Several homeless veterans have come to B-Thrifty with letters of referrals from the case manager to receive items of furniture and clothes free of charge. As they improve their physical and mental health through the clinical services provided by the Veterans Affairs program, we are pleased that B-Thrifty can assist in improving their physical comfort. One of the B-Thrifty founders, Alonso Zamora, was making a presentation to an inter-denominational church group last month and proceeded to share the story of one veteran who was provided free clothes and shoes at B-Thrifty so that he could apply for a job. A gentleman from the back of the room quietly moved forward and said, “that was me!” He had found a custodial job at the host church.
While we are working on improving the procedure for providing basic items to these veterans, B-Thrifty is proud to have a small part in this Federal Government Program to help those who have helped keep our country safe.

En ese momento un caballero al final del salón, se movió silenciosamente hacia el frente y dijo: “¡ese era yo!”. El había encontrado un trabajo como personal de mantenimiento en esa misma iglesia. Mientras trabajamos en mejorar los procedimientos para proveer de artículos básicos a estos veteranos, B-Thrifty se enorgullece de participar en este Programa del Gobierno Federal y poder ayudar a quienes han ayudado a mantener libre y seguro a nuestro país.

Halloween Safety | Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue The observance of Halloween is just one of many cherished childhood memories. Yet, each year, a large number of children are injured or killed on this night of masquerade, treats and fun. Reports indicate Halloween night is more dangerous to children ages 5 – 14, than any ordinary night. On Halloween night, compared to other nights, there are approximately four times as many children killed while walking. As for Halloween-related injuries, the leading cause is falls. Research indicates the lack of supervision is the primary cause of Halloween-related injuries and death. During this festive holiday, Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue (www.pwcgov. org/fire) recommends parents and guardians protect their children from unintentional injuries or worse by closely supervising them when participating in Halloween activities. If you plan on trick-or- treating, the Center for Disease Control summarizes Halloween safety as the following: Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat. Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation. Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses. Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook well. Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Otherwise, stay outside. Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes. At Home If you’re expecting trick-or-treaters or hosting a Halloween party, be sure: • Walking areas are well-lit and free of obstacles. • Items lit with candles, i.e. jack-o-lanterns and luminaries: o Place away from doorsteps, walkways,
landings and curtains. o Place on sturdy tables. o Keep out of reach from children and small pets. o Never leave unattended. For a healthier and more active party: Provide nutritious snacks, i.e. individual packs of raisins, trial mix, pretzels, fruits, vegetables and cheese. Kids get excited when playing games so choose a variety of party games that will increase their physical activity. On the Road If you’re out and about on Halloween night, Safe Kids USA in conjunction with Federal Express suggests the following safety tips: • Drive slowly and safely while being observant of children at intersections, medians and curbs. Trick-or-treaters are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways such as avoiding the use of sidewalks and running between parked cars. • Slowly and carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys. • Reduce any distractions inside your car, such as talking on the phone or eating, so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. * Remember: typical trick or treat hours are between 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Halloween Decorations When decorating for that added special effect follow these simple safety tips: • Inspect decorations for loose connections, frayed or bare wires and broken or cracked sockets. Hang lights using plastic hooks or clips to reduce the risk of electric shock and fire hazards. Never nail or staple light strings. • Don’t overload extension cords. Use special, heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations such as fog machines and electrically-powered inflatable decorations. • Look for the UL Mark on light strings, electrical decorations and extension cords. The UL Mark means the product has been found free of foreseeable hazards and is safer for your family. • Keep candles away from items that easily catch fire, such as decorations, window treatments, and paper. Halloween is the fifth highest day for reported candle fires. Candles are the cause of approximately 15,000 reported house fires every year.
