Dear Reader! A
few weeks ago, we sat down as a family and chatted about three different questions: What truly matters in life? What is success? What is happiness?
The youngest son of our four adult children responded as follows: As far as “what matters”, “DANCING”. For him, success was about “THE ABILITY TO DANCE” and happiness “THE OPPORTUNITY TO DANCE”.
It should be noted at this point that he is neither a professional, nor any other kind of dancer. Whenever I think of that discussion, I try to reinterpret his answers in terms of myself. In the lines which follow, I also give you the opportunity to contribute your own personal interpretation of those questions. After all, holidays indeed have a lot to do with “opportunity”. The beautiful Salzkammergut - Salzburg Chiemsee holiday region offers untold opportunities to “dance” your way to happiness. And I wish you the greatest possible success,

ainly in summer, such a lively ambiance full of activity prevails in the historic district that it‘s hardly possible to get a sense of the more peaceful centuries past. On dreary autumn or cold winter days, it‘s easier to imagine the time of radical architectural change in this city. In Salzburg‘s historic district, every house and every square breathes history. Raitenau, Markus Sittikus, Paris Lodron, and Guidobald Graf von Thun have made the greatest impression on this cityscape. If you want to conquer the city by car, you will generally end up in one of the garages in the city mountains – both of the Mönchsberg garages or the Linzergasse garage located on the Kapuzinerberg release pedestrians from darkness out into the light of the city. The Mönchsberg garages follow on the heels of a World War II tradition - when the caverns of the
mountain served as bomb shelters. Today, these same cavities are incredibly useful for guests who arrive by car and then wish to acquainted themselves with the sights of Salzburg on foot. Whether you enter the center of Salzburg via the courtyard of the medieval Bürgerspital hospital 19 or the Toskaninihof: the festival halls 17 , the Collegiate Church 16 , University Square, the Horse Pond, the Getreidegasse - each of these many, often admired places offers a wonderful perspective on Salzburg. Since 1997, the historic district of Salzburg has been a World Heritage Site, unique, intact, and historically genuine. The favorable location of the city with its lifeline, the Salzach, made Salzburg a connection between south and north early on, also bringing together the Italian and Germanic cultures. The Celts and the Romans had already discovered the advantages of a settlement here. Today, it represents a blend and interaction of various cultural artifacts, of architecture and nature, of restaurants and a variety of shops, and of places of entertainment and contemplative retreat. The material alone doesn’t make for the uniqueness of

Statues of both bishops flank the entrance to Salzburg Cathedral 7 with its three bronze portals, which address the spiritual virtues „faith“, „love“, and “hope“. Nothing remains of the Virgilesque building. Recurrent fires devastated the medieval city and the subsequent cathedrals. The mighty domed structure of today, 99 meters long and 79 meters high, is a work of architect Santino Solari from 1614 – 1628, and is considered the largest Early Baroque structure north of the Alps. In the cathedral are eleven altars, five organs, seven bells, and a bronze baptismal font atop lion figures, which has been preserved from the previous building of the 12th century. Traces of an even older history – of
even older buildings and from Roman times - can be found in the Cathedral Excavation Museum whose entrance is located beneath the northern archways of the cathedral - and in the crypt, which for many years has also housed more modern items, namely a contemporary dance macabre by Frenchman Christian Boltansky. Other magnificent and gorgeous items from the Middle Ages and Baroque era can be found in the cathedral museum and in the reconstructed Prince-Archbishops’ Chamber of Art & Wonders. Around the cathedral, a wide array of delightful, seasonal events take place on cathedral, Residenzplatz, and Kapitelplatz squares: Locals as well as thousands of visitors frequent the St. Rupert‘s Fair in autumn, the Christmas market in winter, the performances of Jedermann in summer, or Siemens‘ Festival Nights, where you can experience the operas of the Salzburg Festival in the open air. Adorning each of the three squares are sculptural masterpieces: the cathedral square is ennobled by the statue of the Virgin Mary (1766 - 1771) 14 and the Residenz fountain 9 on Residenzplatz © E. square is the largest baroque fountain north of the Alps with its four horses snorting water, three atlases, and three dolphins. On the other side of the cathedral in Kapitelplatz square, water pours into the Horse Pond 5 , and only a few meters away is Sphaera, a golden globe with a man standing above, a work of art by German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol. Sphaera is an especially popular place serving as a photo-opp backdrop for many Salzburg visitors. Very near the cathedral are Salzburg‘s three other old, spiritual centers: the Franciscan Church 13 is Salzburg‘s original parish church, the “Church of Our Lady“. Before the Franciscans came to Salzburg in 1583, it was overseen by two women‘s orders, the Domfrauen, and the Sisters of St. Peter. Like St. Peter‘s archabbey, the Franciscan abbey still exists today. The Franciscans comfort the needy, and in St. Peter‘s 12 , the Benedictines have continued to live according to “Ora et labora“ for 1300 years. Founded in 696 during the time of St. Rupert, the abbey features stylistic characteristics of the Romanesque

period, the Baroque era, and – with the rock tomb, which houses the urn containing the remains of the skull of St. Rupert – also Classicism. The socalled catacombs, which served as hermitages in the Middle Ages, are cave-like recesses that lead into the rock wall of the Mönchsberg and where you can find the old St. Peter‘s cemetery with its chapels and graves. The counterpart to the monastery of the Benedictine monks is the Nonnberg convent 3 founded in 714, where the niece of St. Rupert, Erentrude, was the first abbess. Reachable via the Kaigasse or the Nonntal, the short and steep path up to the monastery is already a sign that awaiting the visitor inside the walls of the monastery is a world far away from the noise of the city. The abundance of ornamentation inside the Gothic church, the unique crypt with freestanding pillars and especially distinctive ribbed vaults, and the rock tomb of St. Erentrude are some of the treasures that can be visited in this monastery. The greatest treasure, however, are the Romanesque frescoes from the middle of the 12th century.
Austria‘s largest castle Hohensalzburg Above the abbey, reachable by footpaths as well as by funicular, is Hohensalzburg castle, the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe, which is a visitor magnet where you can gain insight into castle life and enjoy views of both Salzburg and Bavaria: with the Nonntal in the south and Hellbrunn palace in the background. Located close-by in the west is Leopoldskron palace and its pond, behind which the Untersberg rises, with the land opening up you into Bavaria and Flachgau. On the east side of the castle, Salzburg lies at its feet. Hohensalzburg has been around since 1077. It was expanded in the 17th century and at the time of the Reformation was a stronghold for the prince-archbishops against rebellious farmers. Of course, if you aren‘t interested in the splendid halls, castle museum, St. George‘s Church, or the Justice Tower with torture chamber of this castle

Magnet for visitors: Hohensalzburg Fortress is the most-visited attraction in the city. that was never taken in battle, you can simply enjoy regularly occurring events in this amazing setting: Festungskonzerte concerts are a regular part of the program, an Advent market will entice you to browse charming, small gifts, in summer artists gather to take classes at the International Summer Academy, and the summons to “Jedermann“ sounds out several times in the summer months from the cathedral square. The immensity of the 1,000 year-old history of the castle can be quickly left behind, either by taking a quick ride down to the city on the funicular or a walk on the quiet and shady Mönchsberg paths. Long before the Museum der Moderne 20 made the Mönchsberg a venue for art, there were two addresses, where art creators and art lovers gathered: Villa Esinger in the 19th century and the workshop of Agnes Muthspiel in the post-war era, which are both idyllically located above the Toscaninihof. Existing since 2008 in the Edmundsburg (Mönchsberg 2) is the „Stefan Zweig Centre Salzburg“, which along with its academic activities invites you to enjoy public events.

Prior to and after the start of performances at these different concert venues, the action shifts from the stage to the famous people who attend the concerts. These people are no longer watching the festival but are being watched and photographed themselves. Other festival stages within the city are the Collegiate Church, the Residenzhof, the cathedral square, and the “republic“. The stage is set in Salzburg for around six weeks in summer. Gstättentor, the Ursulinenkirche - also called St. Marcus‘ Church 23 , the Mozart memorial by the German artist Markus Lüpertz, the caverns in the mountain - are sights worth seeing on this street, whose houses have become one with the mountain. In the mountain itself, the Mönchsberg funicular leads in a matter of seconds over a distance of 60 meters up to one of the most beautiful viewing points in the city of Salzburg. The Haus der Natur 22 museum of natural history next door has been around since 1924. It also houses a great zoological section as well as a multifaceted science center. A short path behind the Klausentor, along the Müllner Hügel, leads not only to the art-historically important Müllner Kirche 24 but also to the Müllner Bräu famous throughout the world. While one crowd is enjoying trendy drinks and partying in Anton Neumayr square, a traditional and always modern drink flows in the Augustiner Bräustübel - under the arches of the building or in the guest garden shaded by chestnut trees. Mozart himself often enjoyed a beer here. This city’s famous son was born on the Getreidegasse in house No. 9, which has been in existence since 1408. other bank of the Salzach, to the so-called „Right Old City“: the Mozart family lived here from 1773, and until 1780, this is where Mozart composed the majority of his works in Salzburg. The building, destroyed in the Second World War, was rebuilt, and today the rooms are used as a museum. The autographs are in a secure vault in the cellar, and true-to-the-original copies can be found in the living quarters. The “Magic Flute Summer House”, a small wooden pavilion in the Bastion garden, originated in Vienna and was brought to Salzburg. This is where Mozart supposedly composed parts of the “The Magic Flute“ in 1791. The International Mozarteum Foundation, which preserves Mozart‘s heritage, was established in 1841. Mozart is also the namesake of the renowned “Mozarteum“ Music Academy, where music, visual and performing arts can be studied. In both concert halls of the Mozarteum 35 on the Schwarzstraße, soloists, chamber music ensembles, and large orchestras perform. The imposing silhouette of Salzburg’s historical district – the Kapuzinerberg directly opposite provides a perfect overview.
The ideal of a baroque garden: a sea of glorious flowers in Mirabell Gardens.
Theater fans can look forward to daily performances at the Salzburger Landestheater 33 . Only a few meters away, the great operas take place: the Salzburg marionette theater 34 is famous worldwide and - as long as they aren‘t on tour - bring puppets made of wood and paper mache to life to recordings by the world‘s leading orchestras and singers. A team of 10 professional puppeteers operate the strings. Mirabell gardens are the perfect place to rest, take a stroll, or enjoy the sun or the always colorful flowerbeds. Inside Mirabell palace 37 , you will see many people ready to say „I do“ and tie the knot, attendees of the Palace Concerts, and locals taking care of bureaucratic matters. The mayor of Salzburg has his headquarters here with a view of the gardens. Mirabell is the declaration of love of a prince-archbishop. Wolf Dietrich had the palace built in 1606 for his lover Salome Alt and their children, and it was reconstructed from 1721 – 1727 by Baroque architect Lukas von Hildebrandt. Pink Untersberg marble, mossy green serpentine, and gray limestone are the materials that make up the Marble Hall, whose splendor once created the ambiance for festivals thrown by the lord of the palace, and today it is the backdrop for many weddings. It is said to bring luck to a marriage, if you pat the small, round behind of the chubby-cheeked, naked cherubs on the marble staircase. This grand staircase, created by Raphael Donner, is a world-famous example of baroque imperial staircase architecture. In the Mirabell gardens is a Hedge Theater designed as a maze – created at the beginning of the 18th century, it is one of the oldest north of the Alps – which served as a venue for plays during its heyday and today is
used for traditional folk events and also available for impromptu performances. One curiosity is the Dwarf Garden located on the bastion in front of the palace, where you can find 16 of the original 28 stone figures. These dwarves are modeled after deformed people, whose display fell into disrepute during the Age of Enlightenment, so the figures were auctioned off. Only some of them were returned to their former site in 1919. Fischer von Erlach, the great architect of the Baroque period, left his mark with his marble flower vases and balustrades as well as the Pegasus fountain in Mirabell gardens. His triumphant, sacred masterpiece in this part of the city is the Church of the Holy Trinity 30 , built from 1694 – 1702, whose dome fresco is by painter Johann Michael Rottmayr, who frequently came to Salzburg. Like the Left Old City, the Right Old City abounds with churches. St. Sebastian‘s Church 31 in the Linzergasse is resplendent with its ornately forged altar gate, and the church‘s St. Sebastian cemetery in quiet arcades - based on the Italian-style Campo Santo - keeps alive the memories of personalities such as Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, named Paracelsus, and old Salzburg families. A frequently visited site is the grave of the Mozart family, in which Constanze Mozart and her second husband, legation councilor, Nikolaus von Nissen were laid to rest as well as Constanze‘s aunt Genoveva Weber, though not Leopold Mozart. Mozart‘s father Leopold was buried in the communal catacombs in the arcades. Gabriel Chapel in the middle of the cemetery is the

SALZBURG CITY mausoleum of archbishop Wolf Dietrich. A different kind of silence than that of the old cemetery; the quiet of nature on the Kapuzinerberg, awaits you when you enter the Linzergasse, passing by the late Baroque stations of the cross, and make your way up the steep hill to this city mountain. Another funicular is located in the Steingasse, where you will see the jewel of St. John‘s Chapel. There are many viewing points of the lively city down below, and a good portion of the old city walls is still preserved up there. The paths to the 638 m high summit are also nice and shady. With a bit of luck, you may catch a glimpse of the city‘s population of chamois that are taken care of by the city‘s hunters. Highlights of a Kapuzinerberg hike are the Capuchin abbey 28 (1599 - 1602) and the Franziskischlössl, which served as barracks for the guards of the city walls and whose restaurant-inn is today a popular stop for excursions. The former residence of Stefan Zweig, where the writer lived from 1919 to 1934, the Paschinger Schlössl near the Capuchin monastery, is no longer accessible
today. When Zweig lived there, it was called „Villa Europa“ by his many international visitors. A spot with the portrait bust of Zweig in front of the monastery still reminds us of this great literary figure. There are many opportunities to literally follow in the footsteps of the writers born or living in Salzburg. Georg Trakl‘s birthplace 38 is in Waagplatz square, and a research center and memorial as well as the provincial gallery are housed here. Waagplatz, Brodgasse, Judengasse, Goldgasse are exceptionally charming places, where the visitor can get an idea of what life in Salzburg was like in centuries past. In the Getreidegasse, from which through-houses and courtyards extend on both sides to the next street over and to University square, you will find Austria‘s most beautiful shopping venue. A medieval tower that once belonged to a patrician family - became the city tower when, at the end of the 14th century, a city council was formed. From this emerged the city hall 26 , whose six-sided tower construction vies with the many church

towers in the city. The oldest city parish church (dating back to 800) is St. Michael‘s Church 27 across from the cathedral. A ten minute walk via Mozartplatz square, with the Mozart monument 11 created by Ludwig von Schwanthaler, through the Kaiviertel leads to another baroque treasure, St. Cajetan‘s Church 4 . Built by Gaspare Zuccalli, you can marvel at its high altar and its right side altar by Paul Troger. The Chiemseehof (1305) 6 is a large complex of buildings in the Kaiviertel. Until 1807, it was the residence of the prince-archbishops of Chiemsee, who at the same time were the auxiliary bishops of Salzburg and, as a Bavarian diocese, were subordinate to the Salzburg archbishops. Since 1861, the Chiemseehof has been the seat of the provincial government and legislature. The seat of Salzburg‘s archbishops was the so-called “Alte Residenz“ 10 , which originated with the bishops of the 12th century and which was expanded to its vast size with new construction between 1595 and 1619. Below the state apartments created by Lukas von Hildebrandt is the Carabinieri Hall with frescoes and ceiling paintings, those by Altomonte and Rottmayr being the most famous. These state
apartments can be visited year-round as well as the collection of the Residenzgalerie across the way, which combines paintings from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century. Across from the “Alte Residenz“ is the new building of the Residenz with the chimes 8 . This equally splendid square of buildings was originally the guesthouse of the prince-archbishops and, for the past few years, has been the main building of the Salzburg Museum. Each day, the chimes sound out from the tower at 7am, 11am, and 6pm. With its 35 bells, 51 musical pieces can be played, some of which are ascribed to Michael Haydn. The Alter Markt with the St. Florian fountain (1685-87) and the old princearchbishop‘s Hofapotheke with Rococo decor as well as the nearby Residenzplatz square with the Residenz fountain 9 are the central, pulsating places in the city. If you are a little tired after visiting the cathedral square, Residenzplatz square, gallery, and having a shopping spree, you can take a seat at one of the traditional sites of coffeehouse culture, think back on all the exciting events of the day and look forward to what‘s awaiting you the next day. A more or less extended city sightsee-
ing walk is nearing its end - here and there, you can hear the clopping of horse hooves, and in the evening, the animals return with their carriage to the surrounding neighborhoods such as Moos, Maxglan, or Gnigl. At the horse pond 18 , which was built in 1695 according to the plans of Fischer von Erlach like many other great buildings in Salzburg, horses are no longer watered. The harnesses of the animals are also no longer cooled off in front of the gable wall with the frescoes depicting the magnificent horse tamers. Today, the horse pond is a stop for the bus that takes you to other stops in the city, perhaps to Hellbrunn palace or Schloss Leopoldskron built in 1736 which, with its own pond and park, is Salzburg‘s most important Rococo palace. It is also one of the last places to enjoy a view of Salzburg‘s historic district, before you return to your car in the belly of the mountain. It will feel like you‘re on cloud nine, because Salzburg‘s historic district gives the sensation of having witnessed something truly special.

The new building, designed by Munich architectural team Friedrich Hoff & Zwink and perched on an exposed site atop the Mönchsberg, high above the rooftops of the historical district, presents contemporary and modern art in what is probably one of the most beautiful locations in all of Salzburg. With a total space of 2300 square meters at its disposal, this epitome of puristic architecture provides the perfect setting for exhibitions of art from the 20th and 21st centuries. On three floors, it shows art of international standing, including pieces from their own collection in a series of rotating exhibitions. The second location of Museum der Moderne Salzburg is the Rupertinum in the middle of the Old City, a building first chronicled back in the year 1350. It was turned over to the public in 1983, serving as a museum of modern art and home to a collection of graphic art.
West Lounge, is available to the public. In this freshly renovated building, exhibitions, preservation, research and education, as well as various approaches to art, symbiotically share a common space. www.museumdermoderne.at

Salzburg‘s DomQuartier invites you on a unique architectural „Tour de Baroque“. The complex consisting of the Residenz and the cathedral and supplemented by the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter has been brought to life for the first time in 2014 after 200 years as a cohesive tour. It allows visitors to go on a historical walk through the former prince-archbishop‘s seat of power with its diverse history, its unique architecture, and its important art treasures. One-of-akind views of the city are included. The tour leads through the State Apartments of the Residenz in the Residenzgalerie via the north arcade in the cathedral and through the Cathedral Museum with its splendid treasures. From here, it leads to the Chamber of Art and Wonders, the „Long Gallery of St. Peter‘s Abbey“ with its amazing building history, and then to the Wallistrakt, where the most beautiful objects from the extensive art collection of the archabbey are displayed in the new St. Peter‘s Museum. This is where the tour finally ends after a sensational view of the famous Gothic choir hall of the Franciscan church in the magnificent Carabinieri Hall of the Residenz. One of the state rooms, the White Hall is one of the most relevant places where the fate of Salzburg has been redefined. After constant changes of power the transfer agreement of the State of Bavaria to Austria was signed here
on May 1, 1816 and authenticated the new borders of the country. The DomQuartier tour conveys a unique interplay of 1300 years of Salzburg‘s history of power, art, music and architecture. It opens up historic Baroque experience rooms and enables an exciting journey of discovery in the footsteps of the mighty prince-archbishops complemented by changing special exhibitions. www.domquartier.at

The DomQuartier: A tour between heaven and earth
Fotohof For almost 40 years, the FOTOHOF in Salzburg has featured a broad spectrum of offers for photography fans. In addition to seven exhibitions annually in the FOTOHOF gallery, various traveling exhibitions also make regular appearances. Aside from acclaimed international figures, the gallery has also presented practically all of the most important Austrian photographic artists. Publication of books and catalogues profiling Austrian and international photographers led to the founding of the “FOTOHOF edition” publishing house, which has put out over 250 publications to date. The “FOTOHOF edition” program produces original prints by renowned artists, which appear in a small, limited and signed edition. The FOTOHOF library, which is open to the general public, comprises approximately 14,000 book titles, catalogues and periodicals, regularly expanded with new publications. In fact, this represents one of the most extensive post-1945 libraries in Austria dedicated to photography. The Fotohof also offers a broad didactic program addressing virtually all needs: from beginners’ workshops to subject-matter-specific seminars for specialists as well as courses tailored to school classes.
The FOTOHOF archive, established in April 2015, houses photographic collections and the estates of various photographic artists, along with negatives, digital data, documents and other materials that record artistic developments in photography. The FOTOHOF is supported by the Austrian Federal Chancellery as well as the city and province of Salzburg. www.fotohof.at

Science center: hands-on technology Find hands-on, easy-to-understand physics and technology in the science center. There are almost endless opportunities to conduct experiments – to make electricity with turbines, glide through the air on a lifting platform, build a bridge and test it out. The science center offers lots of opportunities for active involvement.

Anyone who wants to see the human body from a different perspective should take this fantastic journey inside the human body. ROMANTIK HOTEL GMACHL ****s 1 toque and Panorama SPA with broad views to the Untersberg
Master cathedral architect Santino Solari built early-baroque Schloss Hellbrunn between 1612 and 1615. The former pleasure palace of the archbishop boasts magnificent rooms and a particularly noteworthy banquet hall. None other than high-spirited Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus came up with the idea of the trick fountains for the ornamental baroque garden, which spray unexpecting visitors without warning. In the mechanical theatre (1750) with its water-power mechanism, you can count 256 figures. www.hellbrunn.at and www.salzburg-zoo.at. In the palace grounds, you can enjoy a delightful stroll. In in the heart of it, on Hellbrunn Mountain, is the old stone theatre were, in 1617, Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” was performed, the first open-air opera north of the Alps. Housed in the Monatsschlösschen – with its exquisite views of the palace – is the folk museum, open only during warmer months and part of the Salzburg Museum. A magnet for visitors is the glass pavilion in the park: Franz and Liesl – characters from the film “The Sound of Music” – sang in it the now worldfamous title “I am 16 going on 17”. This pavilion originally stood by the Leopoldskroner Weiher. Because it was not always accessible to all, it was moved from there to Hellbrunn, making this unique setting an absolute must for all Sound of Music fans.

The economic foundation
The Archbishopric and the Archbishops
From approximately 500 BC, the Celts mine salt and conduct salt trade throughout Europe. Mining is the second pillar, though both serve as the basis for the economic prosperity enjoyed by Salzburg for millennia.
774 sees the consecration of the cathedral that was established by Saint Virgil, a Christian missionary. The cathedral as we know it today was consecrated in 1628..
City of Abbeys 696 Benedictine St. Peter’s Abbey is founded by Saint Rupert. St. Peter’s is the oldest abbey in the German-speaking world to have existed without interruption to the present day, also the oldest institution in the city. 714 Rupert also founds Nonnberg Abbey, the world’s oldest Christian convent with an uninterrupted tradition. Thanks to Maria Augusta von Trapp, who was a novitiate at the Nonnberg convent after World War I and whose life inspired the musical “The Sound of Music”, the abbey gains additional fame. In 1583, the archbishop summons the Franciscan Order to Salzburg and they acquire the church known today as the Franziskanerkirche. In 1596, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich brings the friars of the Capuchin Order to Salzburg, with their abbey church on the Kapuzinerberg consecrated in 1602.

In 798, Salzburg becomes an archbishopric and the archbishops also become secular rulers, princearchbishops. They acquire great economic power through the mining of salt, gold, silver, copper and iron. They also enjoy great political power thanks to vast land holdings, sovereign rights (incl. mining, coinage, excise taxes), as well as jurisdictional rights from 1287. The prince-archbishops live in the Residenz, a city palais in the heart of today’s historic district. The prince-archbishopric endures until 1803, though is then lost amid the tumult of the Napoleonic wars. The archbishopric is reestablished in 1823 and continues to exist to this day. 1077 Hohensalzburg Fortress is built, a clear symbol of representative ambitions and a demonstration of power. It was intended to defend against attack, though never had to prove itself in actual battle. 1587 – 1612 marks the rule of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. The buildings constructed during his tenure shape the city skyline today, including Palace Mirabell, which he had built for his lover, Salome Alt, in 1606.
The Festival City On August 22, 1920, Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s “Jedermann”, directed by Max Reinhardt, is first performed on Cathedral Square, marking the birth of the Salzburg Festival. The Grosses Festspielhaus opens in 1960 with a performance of “Rosenkavalier” under Herbert von Karajan. In 1967, the very first Easter Festival is launched under the overall artistic direction of Herbert von Karajan. The Salzburg Whitsun Festival is founded in 1973, also by Herbert von Karajan. 2006 sees the opening of the Haus für Mozart, the successor to the Kleines Festspielhaus.
Political and secular Salzburg In 1816, Salzburg is absorbed into Austria and becomes part of the province of Upper Austria. Not until 1861 is it once again granted its own independent provincial government and political status as a duchy. In 1818, the song “Silent Night” is first sung at the church in Oberndorf. Music: Franz Gruber; Text: Joseph Mohr. 1860 Opening of the Elisabeth-Westbahn rail line between Vienna – Salzburg – Munich. This begins a new upswing in the economy and society as a whole.
In 1623, the university is built, the biggest in the German-speaking world after Leipzig and Vienna. Dissolved in 1810 during the turmoil of Napoleonic times, reestablished in 1962. The roots of Mozarteum University Salzburg go all the way back to the year 1841..
ALL OF THIS SHAPED SALZBURG SALT MINING ABBEYS ARCHBISHOPS MOZART FESTIVAL
The City of Mozart 1756 W. A. Mozart, the city’s greatest son, is born – in the house at No. 9 Getreidegasse, later living at No. 8 Makartplatz until 1781. After a dispute with the prince-archbishop, he leaves Salzburg and goes to Vienna where, in 1791, he passes away at just 36 years of age..
Salzburg today The Salzburg historical district has been a proud member of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. In 2003, Hangar 7 is opened by Red Bull, a symbol of the worldwide success of this Salzburgbased beverage company. Area production plants, international business conducted by local companies along with tourism are the foundation of the prosperity Salzburg enjoys today.

BERGHEIM
[4]
“On Sunday afternoon, we went to Maria Plain, not to worship but because of the beautiful view”, Leopold Mozart wrote in 1794 in a letter to his daughter, Nannerl, as he climbed into a carriage and had himself driven a few kilometers from the city into the country. Much has changed about this view in the 200 years since Leopold Mozart looked upon this land: the city of Salzburg has grown tenfold since then. Autobahns around the city highlight the enormous mobility; the contrails of planes, which cut through the blue of the sky, were also not there at that time. Even the mountains have changed: on the Untersberg there were, of course, no cable cars as yet, and even the transmitter tower on the Gaisberg is barely 60 years old. Yet, the charm and loveliness of this landscape, which resembles an ideal composition of earlier landscape paintings, have remained. The heart of this lively, sparkling village of Bergheim is still characterized by a peaceful village atmosphere and shops carrying foods from local producers. OBERNDORF

The Silent Night Memorial Chapel, built in 1937 on the original site of the parish church where this
famous Christmas song was first performed in 1818, is a must for visitors coming to Oberndorf for the very first time. In Oberndorf, Josef Mohr, who wrote the words to the song, worked as an assistant priest. www.stillenacht-oberndorf.at Also worth seeing is the Shipping Museum.

EXPLORE NATURE IN EGGELSBERG
Even centuries ago, in around 1700, Berndorf was also a much-visited pilgrimage destination, where people hoped for help and protection from the “Radiant Madonna”. In the 19th cent., Franz Xaver Gruber, the composer of “Silent Night”, was a teacher here. If you wish to retrace the story of this song, you will also enjoy visiting the house where the composer was born located in the Innviertel community of Hochburg.
South-west of Eggelsberg begins beautiful Ibmer Moor, with a moorland theme path leading through this botanically fascinating area. In summer, visitors love to splash about in the very warm moorland lakes.

THE TENNENGAU
HALLEIN AND THE DÜRRNBERG Not myths and legends, but historical reality was unearthed on the Dürrnberg outside Hallein. Celtic settlers began salt mining here in 750 BC. In the reconstructed Celtic village, to which buildings from the Middle Ages were also added, visitors can experience what the existence of the Celts was like 2500 years ago: in the various huts we discover fascinating insights into their daily work and lifestyle. In summer, they host special handcraft events, as they do festivals, such as the Lughnasad Summerfest. Located below, in the city of Hallein, is the Celtic Museum. www.keltenmuseum.at Aside from the salt mine and open-air Celtic exhibition (farm, prince’s grave), the pilgrimage church (1594 – 1612) – built from marble blocks – is also worth seeing; the “Liebfrauenbründl” fountain dates from 1530. From Bad Dürrnberg, a double chairlift rises to the top of the Zinkenkogel. From this 1330 m high mountain, you can take in fantastic panoramas of the provincial capital, Salzach valley, and all the way to Bavaria, Upper Austria and even the Dachstein. In contrast, enjoy a rapid ride back down on the Dürrnberg Alpine Slide www.duerrnberg.at HALLEIN-BAD DÜRRNBERG SALT MINE An adventurous journey into the world of white gold. On the mine train – dressed in appropriate miner’s clothing – you ride deep into the Dürrnberg and the world of salt. It was here that the prince archbishops had the salt mined that guaranteed them riches and power. On the tour through the mine, explorers slither rapidly down to an underground salt lake, then sail on a raft accompanied by mystical sounds. Numerous finds attest to the fact that the Celts had searched here for white gold more than 2500 years ago. www.salzwelten.at HALLEIN
[8]
The old section of Hallein, including the 700-yearold town center, is a tranquil place listed as a historic monument. With old, enchanted lanes, romantic hideaways, arcaded walkways and lovingly restored houses, it is a gem of medieval architec-
ture, as well as homes that were later adapted to the style of the Baroque. www.hallein.com The foundation of the city’s development was salt. Trade, craftsmanship and commerce were dependent for many centuries on its production and its shipping by barge on the River Salzach. The last salt mine on the Dürrnberg ceased production in 1989. Hallein, or the “small Hall”, in contrast to the “big” Reichenhall, has been chronicled since the 13th cent. The “Salt-Works City” was Central Europe’s biggest salt supplier in the 13th cent. and always an important source of revenue for the Salzburg prince archbishops. The town is also one of the places associated with the song “Silent Night”: For 28 years, the parish church was where F. X. Gruber served as choirmaster, organist and composer, and whose home and grave can be visited nearby - Silent Night Museum Hallein. www.stillenachthallein.at DISCOVERIES IN THE TENNENGAU The political district of Hallein covers the same area as the Tennengau, which is the smallest of the five Salzburg districts. Abtenau, Adnet, Annaberg/ Lungötz, Golling, Krispl-Gaissau, Hallein, Kuchl, Oberalm, Puch, Russbach, Scheffau, St. Koloman, St. Martin and Bad Vigaun are the other Tennengau communities. With every step, you encounter intact nature and the abundant beauty Mother Nature has in store: Not wanting to be active here seems impossible, with so many recreational activities available to do. Spring, summer and autumn, hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers are out and about, others find their happiness on horseback or enjoying a leisurely ride in a horsedrawn carriage, hang- and paragliders circle in the sky, in the wild-water streams some work on their rafting skills, others steer their kayaks, and on the summer Alpine Slides big and small “put the pedal to the medal” and race towards the valley below. Awaiting you in Abtenau is the Karkogel Alpine Slide, and outside Hallein the Dürrnberg Alpine Slide. And winter promises pure skiing and snowy enjoyment in the ski areas of Lammertal-Dachstein West, Salzachtal, Tennengebirge, the Osterhorn Group, on the Gosaukamm and the Hoher Göll. Austria’s biggest area of high pastures, and connects Lammertal valley with the Salzkammergut. The “Postalm” is a recreation and hiking area, and in winter a broad region for alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. www.postalm.at Tired, achy muscles are done a world of good at the wellness oasis in Bad Vigaun and Golling. In summer, many a hiker exploring the hiking paradise of the Trattbergalm also dares to cool off in the Seewaldsee in St. Koloman at an elevation of 1,074 m above sea level. Idyllic, free swimming areas – that can be reached by bike – can also be found in Bluntautal outside Golling, with no significant climbs along the way. GOLLING Golling’s main road is flanked by beautifully painted homes. Bluntautal nature sanctuary and the waterfall in Torren that plunges some 80 meters into the depths are the landscape highlights of this community. www.golling.info Above all for painters of the Romantic era, the waterfall located north-west of Golling became a frequent motif – in two tiers, the mighty water thunders over the falls. Yet another natural monument is the Salzachöfen on nearby Pass Lueg. This imposing canyon between the mountains of the Hagen- and Tennengebirge has dug 80 meters deep into the Dachstein limestone. At the “Cathedral”, an especially imposing point, the rock walls on either side seem to close together completely. Naturally, just as in Flachgau, there are pilgrimage churches in Tennengau: Maria Brunneck stands on the pass summit, St. Nicholas on the Nikolausberg in Golling is likewise a destination for a short hike. In the Tannhauser Farm Museum, the farmer’s wife leads you through the house of her parents, while at Golling Castle Museum you can take a journey back in time yet again www.museumburggolling.at: Long-extinct animals, dinosaurs, remains of Ice Age animals, fossilized sea creatures and minerals and the depths of the primeval ocean are all on display at Golling Castle Museum, plus you can also learn more about the town of Golling and its surroundings on a journey of cultural-history.

here are days when you can clearly grasp the extent of lake Chiemsee. Then you comprehend why Bavaria’s biggest lake, also Germany’s third-largest inland lake, is often associated with a “sea”... An area of 81 km2 can sometimes convey the feeling of maritime expanses, only ending far beyond the horizon. But also those days on which rain or fog obscure the view have their own special appeal on Chiemsee. The Chiemsee ferries run 365 days a year – in sunshine or rain or snow, they set out across the lake to the islands,

where experiences of very varying flavors await. Three islands lie in the Chiemsee – the uninhabited Krautinsel, Frauenchiemsee, which has been inhabited by Benedictine nuns for 1200 years, and the biggest of all, Herrenchiemsee. The Chiemsee islands are amongst the earliest documented settlements in the Alpine Foothills region of Bavaria. One of the first abbesses of Frauenchiemsee was Irmingard, daughter of Ludwig the German, whose beatification simultaneously attests to the central significance of the convent for the
culture of ancient Bavaria. From Herrenchiemsee, monks Kyrill and Method set out to bring Christianity to Eastern Europe. Until the time of Napoleon, the bishopric of Chiemsee ruled the region as a religious and artistic hub with an important musical tradition. In 1676, Lorenzo Sciasca created one of the first big baroque churches in Italian style north of the Alps, later destroyed in 1803. Ever since Bavaria’s King Ludwig II began construction of his personal “Versailles” here, this island and its palace have drawn

special attention. After Ludwig’s death, the palace became Bavaria’s first major tourist attraction, and today Herrenchiemsee is one of Germany’s true magnets for visitors. People come here to explore the island’s nature, take a carriage ride, tour the state rooms or the Augustinian Museum, or attend a cultural event. In the second half of July, the Herrenchiemsee Festival invites guests to enjoy concerts and opera performances, this year dedicated to the “genuine” and “fake” Baroque, open imitations and subtle references.
The program includes German church cantatas, along with the artistic coloratura of Italian opera, Corelli’s church sonatas, along with Bach concerts, the radiant music of the Versailles court, as well as sensitive, sometimes passionately torn cembalo works by Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel. But above all, audiences get to hear baroque hommages of later generations: Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Strauss. If you wish to be out and about on the water, you can ride one of the public ferries or take out a boat on your own. For your
personal voyages of discovery, docks along the shore rent out sailing, rowing, electric and paddle boats, as they do canoes and kayaks. An ardent admirer of France’s “Sun King”, King Ludwig II drew his inspiration for his own island palace from Versailles. Schloss Herrenchiemsee is a grand building and a magnet for visitors. The Hall of Mirrors is bigger than its Versailles counterpart, while the state bedchamber, the elevatable dining table and the fountains in the park are added highlights during a palace visit. In the adjoining King Ludwig Museum, we find commemorative items including the king’s christening robe and death mask, along with portraits and family photos.

DER CHIEMSEE Lake Chiemsee, also known as the “Bavarian Sea”, at 81 km² the largest lake in Bavaria. It was created by a glacier dating from the last Ice Age. Both the Celts and the Romans had settlements on the shores of this lake, which was known for its wealth of fish. The lake was truly “discovered” by the artists of the early 19th century, who set out from Munich to travel through the Alpine foothills and the Chiemsee area. Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee islands are still inhabited to this day. The third and smallest island, the Krautinsel, is uninhabited and was earlier used as the vegetable and herb garden of Frauenwörth Convent. PRIEN

Situated in the delightful alpine foothills of Upper Bavaria, between Munich, Passau and Salzburg, and not far from lake Chiemsee. The town has been a spiritual centre for over 1250 years and for over 500 years the most important place of pilgrimage in Germany for worship of the Virgin Mary. More than 1 million pilgrims come each year to visit the “Black Madonna” in the octagon of the Grace Chapel. The small chapel, presumably built around 700 AD as an early Christian baptistery, is situated in the middle of a spacious chapel square, surrounded by Baroque buildings. In the chapel are silver urns containing the hearts of Bavarian kings and electors, as well as other valuable religious relics. Also: late-Gothic abbey with cloister, the Treasury and pilgrimage museum in the house of Pope Benedict XVI with the famous »Golden Horse« (ca. 1400), the monumental circular painting “Jerusalem-Panorama Crucifixion of Christ” (1903), a large diorama of the history of pilgrimages, and the town gallery with rotating exhibitions of fine art.
guard across from the Black Madonna in Altötting. Within the solemn setting of a grand cortege, the heart of famous “Fairytale King”, Ludwig II, was brought from Munich to Altötting where, on 16 August 1886, in a magnificent urn of gilded silver, it also found its last resting place.
Heart urn of Ludwig II stands honor guard in Altötting.
THE FAIRYTALE KING AND THE HEART OF BAVARIA From the 17th cent. on, the Wittelsbach dukes, electors and kings had their hearts interned in artistically designed urns, essentially a regal honor © H. Heine/Tourismusbüro Altötting

Therme Eins
Healing water from the depths of the primitive stone When it comes to physical and spiritual health, there is yet another guarantee in eastern Bavaria: the Bavarian golf and spa region is very young, yet one of the largest spa regions in the world. It is generally referred to as the “Bavarian Bathtub”. In just 30 years, it has grown from a quiet hamlet to a spa town with a world-wide reputation as one of Europe’s leading spa destinations. Bad Füssing is not only an incredibly popular spa, it is also one of Germany’s most important medical-therapy centers. In parallel to spa treatments and healing, Bad Füssing has also turned its focus to wellness. Spacious bathing facilities invite guests to while away countless relaxing moments. Healing waters at pleasant temperatures relax your muscles, invigorating sauna sessions strengthen the immune system, while total pamperings are promised by baths from A to Z, including some in algae, others in goat’s milk. With the power of three spas (Therme Eins, Europa Therme and the Johannesbad), Bad Füssing draws more than 1 million guests every year. Though the original intent was to find oil, they discovered healing waters instead –

which ultimately turned this town into Germany‘s No.1 spa community. At a temperature of 56°C, the waters of Therme Eins bubble up from the depths, and are then collected in 12 pools cooled to different temperatures. The Saunahof connects with Therme Eins, a sauna world set amid the ambience of a historic farmhouse. The dimensions of the Europa Therme are also quite impressive. The “Johannesbad Therme”, has now established itself as a specialist in the treatment of joint complaints. Many would claim that Lady Luck makes her home in Bad Füssing. For anyone in the mood to gamble away the evening, nowhere comes more highly recommended then the casino in Bad Füssing. In Bad Füssing soll auch das Glück zu Hause sein. Für

Summertime escapes in the Salzkammergut
A
nyone who rushes the Salzkammergut, and only travels from place to place along the main roads, misses so much ... The places where mined salt was warehoused and administered, before being exported to the world, were called Salzkammergüter and Kammerhöfe, and it is from these that this region draws its name. For some the “Salzkammergut” epitomizes idyllic landscapes, for others a world in which the individual existences of very disparate people are united, people who are still very much sculpted by the tough living conditions of the past. The Salzkammergut is an ancient cultural landscape, where life

and work were shaped by the mining and trading of salt, one which even boasts a World Heritage Site in the form of Hallstatt. Where precisely the Salzkammergut begins, is something that the traveler will have to determine for him- or herself, since there is both an inner and an outer Salzkammergut. For those approaching this region from the west or north, it begins at lakes Irrsee and Mondsee in Salzburg, leading via Wolfgangsee to a core area in Upper Austria around Traunsee and Hallstättersee, then to the geographical center of Austria, to the Styrian Salz-
kammergut and the area known as Ausseerland. Its primary geographical feature is the Traun Valley, extending from the river’s origins in Styria to the point it discharges into the Traunsee. Its striking cornerstones, visible from afar, are the limestone crags of the Dachstein and Totes Gebirge. The Salzkammergut occupies portions of three provinces, though was described by Austrian literary figure Hans Weigel, due its idiosyncrasies and its ages-old inability to conform to state dictates, as Austria’s tenth province. Wherever you find your personal Salzkammergut, one thing remains the same: it is an especially refreshing region, rich in lakes – 76 in total – and streams, as well as mountains with sizeable peaks, which shake off the morning clouds which swath them, or – on those equally refreshing rainy days – remain mysteriously hidden. The Salzkammergut was actually one of the early engines of tourism within Austria. Once chosen by the ruling Habsburg dynasty as a retreat during the summer

months, while also serving as the hunting grounds upon which Emperor Franz Josef I would stalk wild game, just a short time later its lakes would begin to attract artists, the affluent and educated middle classes. Though hunting areas do still exist today, guests are more interested in discovering towns with resonant names such as Bad Ischl, Gmunden, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Bad Goisern, Hallstatt, Bad Aussee, each proudly displaying its own deeply rooted peculiarities: traditional or cosmopolitan, rustic or imperially noble. And between them, an extraordinary landscape reveals itself – at times cramped and rugged, at times friendly and bright, at others reaching out towards the rest of Austria. Those who hurry about too much in the Salzkammergut, only traveling from town to town along the main roads, miss out on a lot, since things truly get beautiful in the side valleys and where the outside world ends: amid the natural wonders of remote valley heads.

The westernmost lake of the Salzkammergut is Fuschlsee, with its beautiful natural beaches, the visual highlight of which is a spit of land protruding into the lake, upon which stands luxury Hotel Schloss Fuschl, with the actual town of Fuschl lying on the eastern shore opposite. This castle was built in 1555, originally serving as a hunting lodge for the prince-archbishops. Some ten kilometers further east, we meet up with Lake Wolfgangsee, a bridge between Salzburg and Upper Austria. This is an ancient cultural landscape – pilgrims 800 years ago made their way to St. Wolfgang in search of solace and healing – though also a summer haunt for the aristocracy and wellheeled of Austria and adjacent countries, and now very much a paradise for water sports as well. ENJOYABLE LAKE CRUISES
On the ships run by Traunsee ferry service, you not only can sail the lake, you also get to enjoy candlelight dinner, salsa or jazz.
One of Austria’s oldest and biggest private shipping companies is the Traunsee Ferry Service – a business that makes those dreams of gliding across the water and watching the landscapes “slide by” a reality, and it does so year-round. Not only for visitors from Austria and abroad, wanting to enjoy an impression of the towns along the Traunsee, a light breeze wafting in their face the locals, too, love to stand out on the deck - from time to time. Especially since this fleet looks back on a 180year tradition! The ships have been christened “Poseidon”, “Karl Eder”; while the “Gisela” is a 149-year-old paddle steamer, and the “Rudolf Ippisch” a smallish motorboat dating back to 1928. Colorful and varied are the reasons for becoming a lake-farer: Some are taking a daytrip - cyclists, for example, use the ferries to cross the lake with their bikes, continuing their tour from some other town. Children fall in love with the Fairytale Cruises, others come but once a year, descending upon Traunkirchen by ship in order to take part in the Corpus Christi procession; there are also candlelight dinners, Pasta Cruises, music and dance events such as Jazz on the Steamboat or Cruises to Lake Festivals on the Traunsee, Advent and winter cruises, and even a New Year’s Eve ride aboard the ships of the Traunsee fleet. www.traunseeschifffahrt.at
The waves off the Traunsee gently kiss the shore, ships on the lake set course for the dock at Landhotel Gasthof Grünberg: It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful way to approach this Traunsee establishment. Though those who hike, bike or – most frequently – drive their car to this handsome, hospitable house on the lake, cannot fail to notice the flair of the mountain and lake, as well as the inviting charm of the Grünberg itself. Gmunden, also a town that, due to its location on the lake, exudes a sense of vivacity and southern flavor, is close at hand. On the way to Landhotel Grünberg, taking Traunstein Road, the mountains in the background dominate the scenery. The area is picturesque, while the outdoor restaurant, which embraces visitors to Landhotel Grünberg and beckons them to take an immediate seat, offers peaceful seclusion. The perfect spot to get in the right frame of mind for a few days’ timeout, days filled with sports or culture, excursions or total relaxation. Even if you just come to daydream on their private beach and cast a languorous glance towards the life out on the water, the impressive backdrop is constantly there before your eyes. With
Das Landhotel Grünberg at the Traunsee. love for detail and a great sense of hospitality, the hotel and inn are run by the Pernkopf family. With 30 deluxe rooms and 3 family apartments, the hotel radiates a family atmosphere. After exploring the surrounding countryside, after a culture hike, a round of golf, a tour of the peaks – utterly refreshing! After aquatic sports, a visit to the pottery market – held annually in August –, buying some Gmunden ceramics, or one of many other exciting opportunities, guests are happy to return to their room. Always with a mind to the surprises which await from the kitchen. The decision is never easy: original Traunsee Paella Grünberg with fresh filet of trout and Arctic char, accompanied by a crispy,
fresh salad, a foamy red-pepper soup with strips of fish, or perhaps a mouthwatering lamb chop with a leek crust? At Landhotel Grünberg, great store is placed in seasonal ingredients and fresh preparation. Dessert-lovers simply rave about the Amarena- Kirschkugeln, fruity coconut macaroons and their apricot parfait brittle. The cookbook “Upper Austrian Cooking” by Ingrid Pernkopf has been proclaimed the best local cookbook. Lean back, forget the time, listen to the splash of the Traunsee – the outdoor restaurant, right on the lakefront with views of Schloss Orth, invites you simply to relax and enjoy. www.gruenberg.at

Bad Ischl: The romance of bygone days lives on in villas from the late 19th century.
HALLSTATT
[8]
7,000-year-old salt town. Picturesque setting on a steep hillside on the lake shore. Hallstatt Period graves dating from 800-400 BC (the most important finds are now housed in the World Heritage Museum in Hallstatt). These finds gave an entire period of the Late Iron Age its name. Gothic parish church, with one of the most beautiful late-Gothic carved altars in Austria (winged altarpiece from the Pacher School) and charnel house. Because the cemetery is too small, the deceased are later disinterred. Bones and skulls are kept in the charnel house, some beautifully painted and identified. Ride the cable lift to reach the ancient burial sites and the entrance to the world’s oldest salt mine.

SALZKAMMERGUT
AUSSEERLAND 80 km from Salzburg, nestled between the Dachstein, Loser and Totes Gebirge, lie the spa towns of Altaussee and Bad Aussee, as well as the resort village of Grundlsee, in the Styrian portion of the Salzkammergut, the geographic heartland of Austria. The Grundlsee is Styria’s biggest lake – all types of non-motorized aquatic transportation are available. With an almost fog- and smog-free climate, at moderate elevations and rarely affected by föhn winds, visitors hungry for a dose of fresh air are drawn to the Ausseer Land year-round..
STOLLEN AND ISCHL TARTS BY ZAUNER Its luxurious, 19th-century ambience has managed to preserve yet another must during any stay in Ischl: Konditorei Zauner, with a main location in the Pfarrgasse and their Grand Café Restaurant Esplanade. Without the emperor, there would probably never have been a Zauner in Bad Ischl, for its founder, Johann Zauner, moved from Vienna to Ischl at the behest of the emperor. Zauner’s is an outstanding, even legendary patisserie, renowned far and wide, counting many prominent names amongst its guests. In the salon on the esplanade, famous operetta composers, singers and writers would gather. And amongst all of their pastries and confections, one of their products has even become an export hit: the Zauner Stollen, born some 100 years ago as the »Nickerl-Batz« and much loved by the youngsters of that time.

F
rom between all of the spruce, firs, pine of this mountain world, beautiful views reveal themselves before your eyes. Many think of the culinary delights this province produces, many also of its sporting opportunities and outstanding events - not least the Alpine Ski World Championships in Schladming. And then there are people who think of the culture, history and the rise of human civilization: Abbeys and their libraries have been repositories of knowledge since the Middle Ages. In Admont we find a true superlative, since its library hall is the world’s biggest. In this 70 meters long, 14 meters wide and 11 meters tall work of art, the book treasures are united with architecture. sculptures and the frescoes of Bartolomeo Altomonte, visually raising the dome towards the heavens. Behind a heavy wooden door, this library reveals itself perhaps differently than we might have expected, as a room full of light and brightness. The Rule of St. Benedict includes the famous “ora et labora” but also the word “lege” – “pray and work and read”. Admont is a Benedictine monastery which had a scriptorium from the 12th cent. on, in which they wrote their own works, but also copied those of others. These were supplemented by donations, books were exchanged and bought. In seven sections of the hall, each beneath a domed roof, the valuable collection is arranged according to seven major areas: Under the first dome, right after the entrance, works are shelved about art and technology, then comes medicine, in the third section we find theology, beneath the central dome writings about faith, followed

by jurisprudence, history and philosophy. Four figures in the central area by baroque sculptor Josef Stammel represent the “four last things”, Death, the Last Judgment, Heaven and Hell. And every visitor notices one small figure, also Stammel’s most well-known work: At the foot of the “Last Judgment” sits a small devil with spectacles and an accounting book. If Admont library represents a pinnacle of ancient book treasures, about which individual visitors can only gain a superficial impression, there is another peak there, from the top of which it is far easier to enjoy a clear overview. Hiking and scrambling, you gradually approach the highest tops of Styria’s mountain world. Or you hop on a cable car, allowing your eyes to float quicker still into the distance or deep below. Above ground and below, Styria’s highest mountain is a spectacular experience: The Dachstein serves up fantastic scenery, an edifice of which Upper Austrians as well as Styrians are equally proud since it straddles the border between both. While the Nie-
derer Dachstein lies completely in Upper Austria, the Hoher Dachstein (elev. 2,995 meters) has one foot in both provinces. Back in the 19th century, its southern slopes dropping down to Ramsau were famous – due to their reddish hue. These walls of Dachstein limestone rise 1,000 meters-high. Right at the mountain station of the Dachstein Glacier Lift, reachable from Ramsau, we find the Sky Walk – a magnet for visitors with room for as many as 150 people: around you – the mountain panorama of the Northern Alps; directly under you, the 250 meter cliff face of the Hunerkogel; directly above you, nothing but sky. If you prefer to exchange this exposed location with the safe seclusion of a “cave”, we suggest heading for the mountain station of the glacier lift – just a few meters away, the mystical world of ice and snow that is the Ice Palace, along with its carved figures, reveals itself before you.

RAMSAU
[5]
Beautifully situated on a high plain (elev. 900 – 1,300 m) and dominated by the southern face of the Dachstein. How to reach the Dachstein Massif (2,995 m): from Ramsau, take the toll road to the Türlwandhütte, then ride the cable lift up to the Hunerkogel/ Dachstein Glacier at 2,700 m, the sun-soaked ski area of the Schladming Glacier. SCHLADMING

Elev. 745m, town with 4,400 residents. Former mining town, reaching its commercial zenith during the Middle Ages, with exploitation of rich ore deposits in the Schladminger Tauern mountains; copper and iron mills; timber industry. After opening of the Selzthal-Bischofshofen railway line in 1875: tourism gradually developed into a significant aspect of the economy. 1982: Alpine Ski World Championships in Schladming. alled by Styrian poet, Peter Rosegger, the “Crib of Styria”. Parish church: Originally Romanesque (12th cent.), remodeled in Gothic style in 1400 with valuable interior features – glass windows, sculptures, paintings and gravestones from the Gothic era to today. 1953: Cycle of frescoes discovered on the second floor of the church tower.
St. John’s Chapel: East of the town, located on Mount Calvary; pre 1200; rare early-Romanesque frescoes, including cats, mice and foolish maidens. Related stylistically both to the Salzburg (Italo-Byzantine) and Admont schools of the same period. Romanesque crucifix (13th cent.). TRAUTENFELS
[8]
Finds from the Urn-Field and Hallstatt periods show that the Ennstal was a naturally preordained intersection of transit routes. Three-storey Renaissance castle (17th cent.); Castle chapel with a richly stuccoed ceiling; Marble hall with frescoes by Carpoforo Tencalla. Serves today as a regional heritage museum – collection documenting the area’s natural and cultural history – renowned far beyond Styria’s borders.

n Tyrol, you only find flatland in the valley bottoms, such as the central Inntal, which crosses the province fromwest to east. Branching off from the Inn, to the north and south, are many other valleys, each a small world unto itself, extending out all the way to the valley head. Each flanked by mountains, providing the people an area to live that was once clearly defined by Mother Nature herself. The horizon lay high above and was, at one time, practically insurmountable. Every journey over a pass, every path along a ridgeline and down into a different valley was thoroughly considered and only undertaken for important reasons. Mountain hikes, rock climbing, scrambling - these are all “fashionable” manifestations of life in the mountains. They are late descendants both of the Enlightenment, when thoughts turned to discovering and exploring the mountains, and of the Romantic movement. In the 19th century, experiencing the mountains became the object of aesthetic enjoyment. For those of us who find ourselves only temporarily in the Alps, the mountain is something very different than what it is for the people who live here: The Alpine person and the person in the Alps are different creatures: one experiences the Alps as the mighty setting for his reality, the other as an astonishing or conquerable giant within his own voluntarily chosen geographical realm. The Alpine person was and is a farmer. Cowherds and dairymaids make it possible for hikers to stop in for refreshments at mountain huts and enjoy the sight of cows and young animals grazing freely on open pastures. Tyrol is Austria’s most mountainous province. Not only many a steep climb, but also breathtaking panoramas simply take your breath away. The interplay of summits, canyons, rivers and lakes makes Tyrol a destination for active holidaymakers. The scarce living areas, which the Tyrolese have defiantly wrested from Mother Nature, are shared hospitably, for Tyrol leads all Austrian provinces when it comes to tourism. Here, tradition is successfully and sustainably combined with modernity and dynamism. Tyrol becomes a place without bounds for all who

At the beginning of the 16th century, Schwaz silver mine was described as the mother of all mines. It provided a living for around 30,000 people and produced 85 percent of the silver mined worldwide. A few decades later, due to the discovery of America and exploitation of its silver resources, the demise of Austrian silver production began.
[ 12 ]
Copper and silver mining in the Middle Ages; at that time the most important town in Tyrol. The historic town centre was destroyed by fire during the battles of 1809. Only the imposing church and the Franciscan monastery were saved. The size and decorations of the parish church are reminders of the times when Schwaz, with its 30,000 inhabitants, was the second largest city in Austria (around 1500) because of silver mining. Almost 20,000 miners were employed at that time. A fascinating historic mine – once a copper and silver mine – gives visitors an impression of life at the time of the silver boom. Parish church (largest Gothic church in Tyrol) with altars from 1500. Cemetery: loveliest late-Gothic Chapel of the Dead in Tyrol. Franciscan Church: late-Gothic, Baroque; in the adjoining abbey, wonderful cloister with wall paintings (1512–1526) in 24 arcades. Freundsberg Castle towers over the village: Romanesque, well preserved; Exhibition of silver mining. JENBACH
[5]
This is the starting point for the steam cog railway to the Achensee, as well as the steam trains of the Zillertal railway through the world-famous Zillertal. Church late Gothic, beautiful Rococo décor. Schloss Tratzberg in Stans: display rooms that are definitely worth a visit. ACHENSEE LAKE
[ 18 ]
Largest lake in Tyrol; 9 km long, 1 km wide, 133 m deep; ferry service for 120 years. Since mid-summer 2007, the Achensee fleet has been reinforced
The wealth of the Schwaz mining areas also led to the first guilder being pressed at the mint in Hall in Tirol. Even the world of politics was not left untouched by the blessing of silver. Silver from Schwaz paid for the election of Charles V as German emperor, financed journeys of discovery to the New World, and made available to Maximilian I the “pocket change” he needed to pursue his wars. With ground originally broken in 1491, the mine train now runs some 800 metres inside the Sigmund Mine, followed by a dense network of galleries. During your tour, you will learn all about the tools once used and each of the jobs the miners had, plus you will gain an insight into the blasting techniques they used back then. Once back in broad daylight, visitors can enjoy refreshments in the Miners’ Kitchen, browse the silver shop, or even mint their own coin. In Schwaz silver mine, you don’t just experience history “up close” by any means. You can also do something good for your health. Inside the mine there is a constant tem-
by a new ship. Connecting service to the steam cog railway: from the south end of the lake to Jenbach (7 km); since 1889, gradients as much as 16%. BRIXLEGG
[7]
Schloss Matzen in the largest nature reserve in northern Tyrol, the “Matzepark”, is well worth a visit and one of the most beautiful castle ensembles in Tyrol. Its present appearance dates from the 16th century and is architecturally very pleasing. The Round Tower is a rarity in Tyrol. There are arcades with hunting trophies from all over the world. The chapel was redecorated in Baroque style in the 17th century; Knights’ Hall. Schloss Lipperheide – Gschösser Gallery: one of the most beautiful galleries in western Austria, with exhibitions of renowned artists. RATTENBERG …
[ 13 ]
… with its castle-topped mountain, has the smallest population of any city in Tyrol and has changed little since the 17th century. The city’s wealth came from the boom in silver mining in the 16th cent. Lots of bay windows, arches, reliefs, inn signs, frescoes dating from the Middle Ages. Interesting Diocesan Museum in the Augustan Monastery. ALPBACH
[ 14 ]
Experience the beauty of an extraordinary farming village (pop. 2,300) on a sunny plateau (elev. 1,000 m).
