แนวคิดไทยไท บทสนทนาย้อน: สร้างจากเรื่องจริง แนวคิ ด เชิ ง นามธรรมของเทศะพั ฒ นาตั ว เองภายนอก ก า ร เ ค ลื่ อ น ไ ห ว แ ล ะ อ ยู่ น อ ก เ ห นื อ เ ส้ น ท า ง ที่ เ ร า มี ประสบการณ์ต่อมัน ด้ ว ยเหตุ น ี ้ ก ารอธิ บ ายความหมาย เชิ ง ภู มิ ศ าสตร์ ข องสถานที่ แ ละเทศะจึ ง มี ค ว า ม ส ลั บ ซั บ ซ้ อ นเป็ น อย่ า งยิ ่ ง เป ็ น สิ ่ ง เ ช ื ่ อ มโย ง ปร ะ ส บกา ร ณ ์ ของมนุ ษ ย์ ก ั บ สิ ่ ง ต่ า งๆ โดยมิ อ าจแบ่ ง แยก ห า ก แ ต ่ เป็นองค์รวม ภูมิศาสตร์มนุษยนิยมได้นำ�เสนอวิธีวิทยาเกี่ยวกับแนวคิด มโนทั ศ น์ (conceptual base) เพื ่ อ อธิ บ ายมุ ม มอง ที ่ มนุษย์มีต่อภูมิศาสตร์ ซึ่ง Yi Fu Tuan (b. 1930-) ให้ความสำ�คัญและจำ�เป็นต่อการศึกษาประสบการณ์ของ มนุ ษย์ ซ ึ ่ งสัม พัน ธ์เกี่ย วโยงกับสถานที ่ และเทศะ มันคือ วิ ธี วิ ท ยาที่ ช่ ว ยเผยคลี่ มิ ติ อั น สลั บ ซั บ ซ้ อ นของเทศะ สถานที ่ อาคารสถาปั ต ยกรรม วั ต ถุ ส ิ ่ ง ของต่ า งๆ ที ่ แวดล้อมและที่ขาดมิได้คือประสบการณ์ตรงของบุคคล กระแสหลั ง โครงสร้ า งนิ ย ม (post-structuralism) ได้พยายามปลดปล่อยเรื่องเล่าหรือบันทึกในรูปแบบต่างๆ เชิงทัศนศิลป์ให้ได้สัมผัสกับชีวิตมากขึ้น และมีความเห็น ว่าบันทึกเรื่องเล่าทั้งหลายนั้นเกิดจากความทรงจำ�ร่วมของ กลุ่มคน มั น ได้ ถ ู ก จดจำ � หรื อ แม้ แ ต่ ล บลื ม โดยทั่วไปแล้ว มนุ ษ ย์ เ รามี ป ฏิ สั ม พั น ธ์ กั บ ผู้ อื่ น เสมอในพื้ น ที่ ห นึ่ ง และ กอปรขึ้นจากประสบการณ์ร่วมกับบุคคลอื่นๆอีกมากมาย ประสบการณ์ในพื้นที่ของแต่ละคนจึงถูกกำ�หนดและเกิดขึ้น โดยประสบการณ์ร่วมกันกับบุคคลอื่นเสมอ มั น แสดงให้ เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสิ่งต่างๆ มีความสำ�คัญอย่าง ปฏิ เ สธมิ ไ ด้ อาทิ ความสัม พัน ธ์ ร ะหว่ า งบุ คคลกั บบุ คคล ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลกับเทศะ สถานที่ สัตว์ สิ่งของ และเวลา ตอกย้ำ�การเชื่อมโยงกันระหว่างกิจกรรม การให้ ความหมาย ความรู้สึกที่มีต่อเทศะและคุณค่าแห่งสถานที่

ดังนั้น ความสั ม พั น ธ์ ซ ึ ่ ง เกิ ด ขึ ้ น และกำ � หนดโดยบุ ค คลจึ ง ถื อ เป็นสิ่งที่สลับซับซ้อน ในทั ศ นะของนั ก มานุ ษ ยวิ ท ยามองว่ า ประสบการณ์ของมนุษย์ประกอบด้วยร่างกาย ความคิด ความรู้สึก ที ่ แ ย ก แ ย ะ สิ ่ ง ต่ า ง ๆ อ อ ก จ า ก กั น ด้ ว ย สั ญ ลั ก ษ ณ์ ต่ า ง ๆ และเชื่ อ ว่ า ปั จ จั ย ทางชี ว วิ ท ยามี ส่ ว นสำ � คั ญ ในการอธิ บ ายความ เป็ น มนุ ษ ย์ แ น ว คิ ด ภู มิ ศ า ส ต ร์ ม นุ ษ ย นิ ย ม พ ย า ย า ม ต อ บ คำ � ถามที่ ว่าเพราะเหตุใ ด เทศะและสถานที ่ ต ่ า งๆ ปรากฏแสดง ขึ ้ น อย่ า งไร้ ค วามหมาย หากปราศจากประสบการณ์ร ่วมของ บุคคลบรรจุ ลงไปภายใน และประสบการณ์ ก ารมี ส ่ ว นร่ ว มของ ก ลุ ่ ม บุ ค ค ล ภ า ย ใ ต้ ส ถ า น ก า ร ณ์ เ ดี ย ว กั น ทั ้ ง เ ชิ ง อั ต วิ สั ย และภววิ ส ั ย ที ่ เ กิ ด ขึ ้ น ในพื ้ น ที ่ เ ดี ย วกั น จึงมีความหมายที่ ลึกซึ้งต่อพื้นที่คล้ายคลึงหรือต่ า งกั น นั้ น ขึ้ น อยู่ กั บ ความเข้ ม ข้ น ของแต่ ละบุคคล ประสบการณ์ ระยะเวลาและเหตุการณ์ แนวคิด ภววิ สั ย เชิ ง ปริ ม าณเช่ น นี้ ส ามารถอธิ บ ายความหมายทางสั ง คม ได้ อ ย่ า งน่ าสนใจ ทำ � อย่ า งไรเราจึ ง สามารถประยุกต์ความรู้ทาง ภูมิศาสตร์ร่วมกับสนามทางทัศนศิลป์ เพื ่ อ อธิ บ ายหรื อ ถอดรหั ส ความหมายของสถานที ่ เทศะ รวมถึงสภาพแวดล้อมต่างๆของ มนุ ษ ย์ อ ย่ า งเป็ น ระบบ และกลายเรื ่ อ งเล่ า ธรรมดาๆ เพื ่ อ ให้ สถาปัตยกรรมแห่งความว่างเปล่ากลับมีความหมายอี ก ครั ้ ง

เทศะ สถานที่ และมนุษย์ ความสั ม พั น ธ์ ข องมนุ ษ ย์ แ ละสิ่ ง แวดล้ อ มได้ ถู ก นิ ย ามในเชิ ง ภู ม ิ ศ าสตร์ ว ่ า Topophilia ซึ ่ ง ในภาษากรี ก นิ ร ุ ก ติ ศ าสตร์ ของคำ�ว่า topos หมายถึง “สถานที่”และ philia หมายถึ ง “ความรั ก ที ่ ม นุ ษ ย์ ม ี ต ่ อ สถานที ่ แ ห่ ง หนึ ่ ง แห่ ง ใด อย่ า งเข้ ม ข้ น ”มั น ผสานรวมเข้ า กั บ ความรู้ สึ ก เชิ ง อั ต ลั ก ษณ์ ท าง วัฒนธรรมซึ่งหลายคนเกิดความประทับใจและหลงใหลในสถานที่ แห่ ง ใดแห่ ง หนึ ่ ง อย่ า งสุ ด ที ่ จ ะบรรยาย นั ก ญาณวิ ท ยาอย่ า ง Gaston Bachelard (b. 1884-1962) ระบุใ นหนังสือ The Poetics of Space กล่าวถึง Topophilia โดย นำ � เสนอแนวคิ ด พื้ น ที่ เ ชิ ง กวี นิ พ นธ์ แ ละสภาวะความมี ตั ว ตนของ มนุ ษ ย์ ใ นพื ้ น ที ่ น ั ้ น Bachelard ให้ ค วามสนใจต่ อ เทศะในฐานะ ภาพสะท้อนของพื ้ น ที ่ ท างจิ ต วิ ท ยา กล่ า วคื อ ขอบเขตภายนอก อ า ค า ร ส ถ า น ที ่ ที ่ ป ก ป้ อ ง พื้ น ที่ ภ า ย ใ น ข อ ง เ ร า แ ท้ จ ริ แ ล้ ว การทำ � ความเข้ า ใจเรื ่ อ ง Topophilia นั ้ น เป็ น สิ ่ ง ที ่ ส ร้ า งความ ซั บ ซ้ อ นและมี ค วามเป็ น มนุ ษ ย์ อ ย่ า งสู ง เนื่องจากเป็นการ พยายามอ ธิ บ า ย ค ว า ม สั ม พั น ธ์ ร ะ ห ว่ า ง ม นุ ษ ย์ กั บ สิ ่ ง ที ่ แวดล้ อ ม และมี ร ากฐานการสร้ า งความเข้ า ใจเกี ่ ย วกั บ มนุ ษ ย์ เพราะเป็นแนวคิดที่วางประสบการณ์ของมนุษย์ไว้ตรงกลาง และ ปฏิ เ สธอำ � นาจเหนือธรรมชาติหรืออำ�นาจที่ม องไม่เห็น

น ิ ท ร รศก าร ไทยไท บ ท ส น ท น า ย ้ อ น : สร้ า งจากเรื ่ อ งจริ ง เป็นโครงการที่ออกแบบให้ศิลปินทำ�งานเชิงรุก และมีโอกาสพำ�นัก ปฏิบัติงานลงพื้นที่ภาคสนามร่วมกันสองพื้นที่ ได้แก่พื้นที่ Open Contemporary Art Center ในกรุงไทเปและ About Photography ในกรุงเทพฯ ความน่าสนใจของพื้นที่ทั้งสองนั้น เชื่ อ มโยงสั ม พั น ธ์ กั น ต่ า งกรรมต่ า งวาระสร้ า งร่ อ งรอยตาม

Curatorial Statement By jiandyin (jiradej and Pornpilai Meemalai) Mythology: Curating the ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story The abstract concept of space develops

itself outside force and stands aside from the path that we have had experienced on it.

As a result, to describe geographical meaning of place and space is a complex thing.

It connects with human experience toward things as a whole.

H u m a n i s t i c Geography has presented Conceptual base methodology to explain human vision towards geography which Yi Fu Tuan (b. 1930-) emphasized and it is significant to study how human experience relates to place and space as a methodology to unfold the complexity behind space, place, architecture, surrounded things and human’s direct experience. The tendency of post-structuralism has attempted to liberate all sorts of artistic narratives or archives to encounter more to the life and to consider that they are common memories of people. They were memorized and were forgotten. In general, humans often interact with others at a certain place and often acquire experiences with many others.

It reveals that all things significantly unquestionable relate to one another.

Fo r i n s t a n c e, re l a t i o n s h i p s b e t we e n individual persons, between human and space, place, animal, things and time underline the connection of activities, definition, sensibility towards space and value of place.

06 Therefore, relationship marked by human is a complex issue. Anthropologists have rega rd e d t h a t h u m a n e x p e r i e n c e consists of physical body, thoughts, sensibility of classifying things via symbols, and believed that the biological factor significantly defines human being.

The notion of h u m a n i s t i c g e o g r a p h y attempts to respond the question of why all spaces and places appear meaningless without human experience that inherited inside it and collaborative experience among groups of people under common circumstances or places, subjectively and objectively. Whether they are profoundly meaningful, similar or different depending on each specific person, experience, duration and circumstance. Such objective quantitative concept interestingly explains social meaning.

How can we apply geographical knowledge with visual art field to methodically explore or decode the meaning of place, space as well as environment of human and achieve into an ordinary narrative to revive an empty architecture?

Space Place and Human Relationship between human and environment is geographically defined as Topophilia. The etymogy of topos in Greek means “place” and philia means “strong love that human has toward a certain place”. It merges with cultural characteristic sentiment and indescribable feeling of love with a place.

G a s t o n B a c h e l a rd ( b . 1 8 8 4 - 1 9 6 2 ) , epistemologist, pointed about Topophilia in the book The Poetics of Space introducing the concept of poetic space and existing condition of human being in a certain space. Bachelard’s interest in space as a reflection of Psychological space which is literally the frontier of a building that protects whatever inside our thoughts.

In fact, understanding the Topophilia concept is complex as it involves extremely humanistic issues and even portrays relationship between human and environment. It also places human’s experience at the core and declines invisible supernatural power. Humanistic geography principally believes in human engagement.

Geologist Fu Tuan introduced a concept emphasizing on human perception and attitude compared to a caption under an image – both of which are relatedly bound together as one at the same time. He concluded that there are levels of internal emotion that is the characteristic of a place where strong sensitivity, impression, fresh physical contact are created in human’s perception.

To discover a familiar place as if one has discovered his or her home creates a healthy pleasure and creative force associating with our long history – individually and culturally.

The word “Topophilia” was formulated by contemporary geography academics for studying and defining the responsive scope of place, object-environment human has interaction with, in every circumstance.

This is unlike to general emotion, whether delicate or severe. Similar to a course of human responsibility to his/her environment that is part of the aesthetic, we can feel and reach the crisp air, fresh water and earth as a home – a place of memory. Soon after, we will all concentrate on Topophilia which appears in various forms of experiences; from journeys to sitting and watching the sun set somewhere. We often gain experience when we travel away from our familiar place – voyaging to resorts, to ancient town or a charming place with architectural structure and interestingly designed urban plan. These are which generating impressive aesthetics for human living and dwelling.

07 Place and environment drive human emotion transform with perception through symbols and situation. The awareness of the past now becomes a significant element of the affection that human has toward place and a reason why humans usually root at one certain place.

ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story Object-Place can bring us to concrete fact, once we experience all around the place over our active sensation, at the same time, reflecting our inner‌ We can say that every place is embraced with spirit and the being of a person. There is only human that has ability to sense and able to realize place and space, able to convey feelings towards certain place as soon as he/she applies morality and own aesthetics to adapt to specific place.

Yi Fu Tuan The process that artists reside in one specific space more or less expands personal perceptions. The ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on a True Story questioned over direct personal experience towards space on how the answer can be reached or described the meaning of the place. What are the factors behind it? To emphasize a place as a way to perceive and to understand the world and the story behind it is what we shouldn’t overlook. Is it possible that an architecture c o n s e r va t i o n d o e s n o t s o le ly re v e a l conventional information,nor bricks, stones, plaster conservation that constantly corroded every minute, but rather reveals significant elements of personal experience that discloses knowledge and opinion towards a place.

ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story exhibition ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story exhibition is a project generating for artists who actively work and live onsite together at Contemporary Art Center, Taipei and at About Photography, Bangkok. The 2 sites interestingly connect to each other in different circumstances. It created traces upon people’s experience embedded within m o d e l study places, allow us to question and seek answers for learning purpose and uncover the hidden spirit of space and place.

A place with continual historical developed, vertically and horizontally situated on an im a g in ed co mmunity, Yuk ti Mukd av ijit ex p la in ed that imagined co mmunity persuades us to realize the state of someone who lives distantly from each other, does not have relativeinvolvement and has never seen each other before but longing for a continual relationship, although uneven likewise dashed lines. Regarding if we refer to a n asso c iatio n and c ross-b o rd er se n t iment o f 2 gro up s o f p eo p lein re l a t i on to time, space, blood relatives or i n t i m a te d social group to connect with unknown or unfamiliar people, having an awareness of minor scale of imagined communities that overlapped in many different layers and include awareness of society a far from familiar community, it will always convey a change in the respect of being group from one group to another.

This is an imagined recognition that both groups have acquired through perception in relation to place from the past and migration, interchanging with condition and place.

The residency program at the 2 model study sites and their context: About Photography, Bangkok, a pioneer contemporary art space in an old area of Chinatown operated contemporary art programs since 1997; the Open Contemporary Art Center, Taiwan, a contemporary art space run by artist collective since 1994 to present. With the limitation of time to approach for space support from government and private companies to run the programs, it had caused them to move to other places and finally translocated to About Photography, Thailand, for 6-month period during 20122013. It was during the time when the contemporary art exchange and collaboration of ThaiTai: A Measure of Understanding between Open Contemporary Art Center and jiandyin (Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture) began.

As a result, the current exchange and collaboration between Open Contemporary Art Center and Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture is not a reproduction of past narratives and information nor solely a presentation of historical images, it is rather a connection of human experience at present which overlaps on the basis of common space and place. All narratives have become a mutual experience of the place and have made people creatively realize the true and meaningful value of place and space through visual art field.

The two case study areas have changed by factors of time, events, activities, meanings, and past memories, and remained a question and a lingering trace in the minds of many – particularly those who have shared experiences with those spaces. During the timeframe of three-month work and residency of the artists, they have become a part of the past and stood on the field of collective memories -a positive movement of unity and collaboration that explains things they want to express and gives a meaning to the place that are felt and cherished by many.

“ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story� exhibition is initiated by the collaboration between Open Contemporary Art Center (OCAC) Taiwan and Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture Thailand under the collaborative framework of bilateral exchange and research with the purpose of establishing a fundamental k n ow le d ge a n d u n d e rs t a n d i n g o f t h e designated case study areas. The project is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan and its timeframe started from July to September 2018, through Nobuo Takamori, director of Outsider Factory, Taiwan, operates in parallel with Project Complex in Bangkok, co-curated by Shih Tung Lo (Director of Open Contemporary Art Center) a n d J i a n d y i n ( J i ra d e j a n d Po r n p i l a i Meemalai) (Director of Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture), along with 12 artists who have participated in this project including Space Reader Artists Collective (Yu Jie Jiang, Min Yao, Xuan Huang, Chieh Ching Shih, Chun Chen Huang), Rawiruj Suradin, Saroot Supasuthivech, Supphakarn Wongkaew, as well as guest artists CHENCHENGYU Family (Chun Chen Huang, Yu Cheng Liu, Yu Chiao Liu) and Jutamas Buranajade and Piti Amraranga. Artists from Thailand and Taiwan work together to develop the project in the field of visual arts withinthe designated timeframe and conclude the project results with contemporary arts exhibition featuring visual artworks in many different media such as media art, performance art, textual, sound, photo and object.

11 CHENCHENGYU is a group of family and artists who has been creating and developing vis ual art proj e ct s in ce 2 0 1 1 . T h e members of the group consist of a couple Chun Chen Huang and Yu Cheng Liu, and also their daughter Yu Chiao Liu which is their inspiration and motivation originated within themselves. Chun Chen Huang received a Master ’s degre e f rom t h e C o llege o f Liberal Arts, National Taiwan University in 2005 and currently takes a position of assistant professor at the college. Yu Cheng Liu also received a Master’s degree from the College of Liberal Arts, National Taiwan University in 2006. Yu Chiao Liu is currently studying in grade 4 at Taipei Municipal Ren-Ai Elementary. Various works by the group were exhibited including “19991221 > 20130421 | PART ONE” at OCAC, Taipei, Taiwan in 2012, “Tid Silp Bon Ratchaburi 2: We are the City” in Ratchaburi, Thailand, “ThaiTai: A Measure of Understanding” at URS21 Chung Shan Creative Hub, Taipei, Taiwan, “ThaiTai Fever - STAGE 3: How to Fix a Leaky Roof in Rainy Days” at About Photography, Bangkok, Thailand in 2013 and “ThaiTai Fever – After and Before a Meeting” at OCAC, Taipei, Taiwan in 2014.

Six years ago, CHENCHENGYU resided at About Photography as artists in residency for several months on their daughter’s school holidays. They held no ego and were down-to-earth, sharing an appearance of a happy family accompanying each other.

Their works of art go beyond obligation and boundaries of visual ar t, and are interdisciplinary. The work “A Period of Time” created in 2013 (journal, installation) let the audiences see their methodology and the way they present their works fascinatingly by creating an ambiguous viewpoint and erasing the boundary of consciousness of memory through objects and activities. CHENCHENGYU is interested in creative processes that are without ambition, letting everything goes naturally with an emphasis on relationships between space, objects, and audiences’ points of view. They refer to the saying of Hiroshi Sugimoto (b.1948-),

“the art visible is creation without any ambition.” Letting natural force come back to oneself becomes an important thing in their works.

There are possibilities that we can create visual art without ambition by listening to a little child’s saying through conversations based on reality and establishing more u n d e r s t a n d i n g o f c re a t i ve p owe r.

Therefore, the group is metaphorically an image of historical people of the place when the artists from OCAC in Taiwan resided here for 6 months and had a chance to participate developing the contemporary art in Bangkok with their activities in various sub-projects.

The group have tried to create multimedia mechanism so that the audiences could interact with art works. Their movements are key factors to create co-experiences between people, space, and places. A great deal of details in an empty space itself fused into a phenomenon without focusing on the place’s backgrounds. The movement of humans is what creates experiences and releases individual consciousness giving it freedom to connect oneself with space and places.

Jutamas Buranajade was born in 1980 in Nakhon Pathom province. Piti Amraranga was born in 1980 in Bangkok. The two live and work between Nakhon Pathom and Bangkok, Thailand, and they co-found o-d-a (object design alliance). As an artist duo, they work in art/design field and use the fundamental data from research result to explore the possibility to design objects by their utilities.

The two artists earned a Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University. Most of their works are related to interdisciplinary design arts, and they often bring themselves into and work with local communities in various aspects, such as the project that requires collaboration from local communities and local artisans. Jutamas and Piti designed children’s furniture for Japanese brand “Katoji” and co-established ‘hat’ design studio.The artist duo has keen interest in the detail of craftsmanship design and deeply respects the works of woodcraftsman, and that is how their works are presented in such detail and elaborateness. They collaborated with another artist Wei Li Ye to create “Divinity Trace #5” (2012), the work that brings back the memory of an old chair that they secretly took out of an abandoned building in Taipei. The energy of that upholstered chair has lost within the tide of time, so they brought together the spirit of abandoned chair and the real wood pieces gathered from old houses in Thailand.

This artwork was showcase in “T haiTa i : A Mea su re o f U n d e rs ta n d in g ” exhibition in Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC), back when ag r o u p o f Ta i wa n e s e a r t i s t s h a s l i v e d and worked at About Photography in 2012.

Jutamas and Piti were also a part of subproject “ThaiTai Fever - Stage 3”, the exhibition presenting the emptiness of a blank space.

They fixed the wood floor damaged by termites on the second floor of the About Photography in 2013. The replacement wood pieces were so neatly placed that you almost could not see it with bare eyes, unless you detect it underneath from the first floor. Less but more is one of the concepts that they have been tirelessly developing throughout these years.

Jutamas and Piti join “ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story” exhibition as guest artists, for the reason that they were a part of collaboration and exchange project back in 2012-2013. It could be said that the two artists are the representation of local historical figures. Their expertise in furniture creative design has led to the research and analysis of one chair that is placed at About Photography from the very beginning until present day. Even when deterioration has posed obstacles to its utility, it has become a part of local history. The process of understanding the connecting boundaries between old and new, past and present, imagination and memory consciousness has made a person more aware of the surrounding experience. The effort to prolong the life of objects, therefore, is not merely for the recollection of past nor the unyielding longing for old times, but also is the utmost delicacy and dedication to meaningfully co-exist with surrounding objects. Awareness of one’sexistenceand human responsibility is the reflection of psychological space that human has for place and location that exist withi our own consciousness.

He received a master degree in painting from Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK), Ghent, Belgium in 2017. Rawiruj’s works of art were exhibited in various exhibitions including “Autopilot” at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in Bangkok, Thailand in 2015, “The Saint, The Fox and Their Dictionary” in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016, “ALIEN” in Ghent, Belgium in 2016, and “Consultation Only” at Middelheim Museum Library in Antwerp, Belgium in 2017.

Furthermore, he also writes articles as a freelance author and photographer for Fine Art Magazine and Art4D Magazine in Bangkok, Thailand. With an educational background in Industrial Design, Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, Rawiruj interestingly adapts his knowledge to apply on methodological concepts and the ways he present visual art with conceptual processes and an anaytical system. In 2017, Rawiruj developed a series of works entitled The Entropy of Painting which relied on a non-representational method, offering abstract expressionist art which went beyond flatness of space and time.

15 His interest towards questionable issues regarding space and how the paintings were deconstructed by computer allowed them to become processes of color and space by extending the limits and dimensions of physical space into electronic space, replacing electronic signals with numbers 0 and 1 which are numbers in the binary digit system called bits.

When arranging these numbers in row, it can create languages, meanings, codes or symbols.

Generally, we hold visions towards space through appearances of inconsistent areas.

These areas vary in accordance with what we see while perceiving their boundaries.

On the other hand, we can perceive concepts of space and those inconsistent areas subject to linguistic boundaries. What are the freedom and the space of individuality? This is the question that Rawiruj tries to find the answer to. He has found that while we think about space, it simultaneously shows its areas, like negotiation between binary oppositions of backgrounds and contexts, subjects and objects. What can we do to have imagination towards space in the manner of going beyond limits subject to Gestault theory?

The works of art by Rawiruj in “ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story” art exhibition still search for the way human minds can perceive things through experiences and memories without objects. For this reason, memories, both from personal and shared experiences, become essential materials.

While working and doing research in Teipei, Rawiruj found the book entitled The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Mollie Used Book Shida Store. The intense context from page 118 was adapted and applied on his concept that fascinatingly put an emphasis on human perception and attitudes by referencing original resources.

With understanding towards processes that transform databases into bits; 1 is 1, 0 is 0, the appearances made from sub-data show individuality, participation in history, experiences shared with other people in similar space, through consciousness towards time and me myself who thinks in the manner of not dividing oppositions anymore.

Saroot Supasuthivech was born in 1991 and currently lives in Bangkok, Thailand.

He received a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts (Mixed Media), Faculty of Painting Sculptu re a n d Gra ph ic Ar t , S ilp a ko r n University, Bangkok, Thailand in 2015.

Saroot was chosen as an artist in “EARLY YEARS PROJECT #2” in 2017 organized by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. His works were exhibited in several group exhibitions including “Tai Nai Asean” at Thai Bank Museum, Bangkok, Thailand in 2015, “Popup Museum (Model Study for Nongpho Community) in Ratchaburi, Thailand in 2016.

In 2018, he participated in a visual art research project entitled “365 days: LIFE MUSE (Model Study of Nongpho Community Labourers)” as an assistant director and foreign artist coordinator. In 2017, Saroot also participated in developing and creating a work of art entitled “Bio-Dictionary” coordinating with Dr. Lin Hong John as an assistant artist for the project “Topography of Mirror Cities” in which Bangkok, considered as one of the 5 cities in Asia, also has taken part in the project and organized a contemporary art exhibition entitled “Bangkok Layers” at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Bangkok, Thailand contributing a video installation work entitled “SECURITY GUARD.” Saroot has developed his methodological concept and the way he represents his works through researches and analyses of data fields, along with parallels of art concepts and participatory art. Images of bi-meaning space are overlapped, letting masses of empty spaces surround things such as objects, buildings, places, etc.

17 Free and inert movements have devoured physicality of things connotationally when connected back to field databases. He relies on geopolitical dimensions, utilizing them to create images of space and places, to describe ambiguous and complex relationships between humans and environments. Blurred borderlines of physical spaces and consciousness of spaces from memories, stories, atmospheres, and recorded sounds are databases that Saroot uses to interpret in the virtual world theory.

Saroot’s video installation and sculpture “When Typhoon Arrives, Stay with Family” ( 2 0 1 8 ) whic h has b een d evel o p ed in “ThaiTai Re-conversation: Based on True Story” exhibition expresses his interest in issues regarding emigration and habitation, His work raises questions towards small imagined communities, whether they share relationships between each other or not, through perception of the past which clings to an area, an object, or belief s h a re d t o ge t h e r. T h e s e c o m m u n i t i e s indicate way-of-life intertextuality of traditions, belief, and rituals that Chinese emigrants in Thailand and Taiwan hold. Recorded inteviews conducted during the residence and the operation in Taipei have told stories about the proper construction of tombstones which relate to letters, positions, and colors, and stories about cemeteries through memories that people connecting with the area for more than 60 years old. Saroot tries to link engraved tombstones, which in the manner of archaeological context is considered a form of the most ancient art that belongs to art about death which still connects to those who are still alive, with profound meanings about people’s roots and background. Tombs and cemeteries in the dimension of space and places have become things that interwine the inconsistency of the past, the present, and the future of the invisible chain. Those who are strict about Qingming rituals would travel back to their hometown to meet their family, relatives and friends and together clean the tombs of their common descent, although the rituals occur under concepts of imagined communities.

Supphakarn Wongkaew was born in Ratchaburi, Thailand in 1988 and currently lives in Nonthaburi, Thailand. She received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Communication Design), School of Architecture and Design, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand. After her graduation, Supphakarn started working as a graphic designer at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Bangkok, Thailand. She then has become a freelancer, designing publications for various contemporary art exhibitions and also developed implementation of art and culture management and improvement. In 2012, she worked as an assistant manager for a community-based art project “Art Normal #1” in Ratchaburi, Thailand.

In 2013, she worked as a co-curator for a contemporary art exhibition entitled “Poperomia /Golden Teardrop” Thai Pavilion, at the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia Italy. In 2014, she was invited to work as a co-curator in “Translocal” art exhibition which was a part of Chiang Mai Design Week, Chiang mai, Thailand. In 2015, she worked as an assistant researcher for the “Research and Archiving Project titled The Exhibition History in Thailand from the 1970s to the Present,” which was supported by the Asian Culture Center (ACC), Institute of Asian Culture Development, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Gwangju, South Korea. In 2016, she worked as a curator for “Art Normal #2: Toyburi,” Ratchaburi, Thailand. In 2017 Supphakarn and her colleagues established a curator and cultural worker group called “Rai.D Collective”.

Supphakarn is interested in various dimensions of contemporary art and working on multidisciplinary subjects. She utilizes and adapts her curatorial and designing ability to develop methodological concepts and the way she represents her works.

In “THAITAI Re-conversation: Based on True Story” exhibition, Supphakarn focuses on learning space as sediment overlapped with various actions and times from circumstances that seem to be similar but different, generating reproduction of paralleled images of space and places. This leads to an investigation into complicated layers of space through stories told by local people.

Information was recorded from people from imagined communities who have different experiences coherent with time and circumstances.

We won’t be able to know which stories have really occurred, since the stories are complex and overlay loosely.

Supphakarn tries to describe the condition of space and physicality of places through reproduction of a series of information with images and text of a book printed by the thermal transfer method. It extracts space and time into visibility, like giving a meaning under an image. The text will slowly disappear from the papers and the visible photographs of places, Chien-Chen Circle and 22nd July Circle, blurred and blended into each other. The spaces of the two circles and the text perform under the rules of time. It seems like the various invented circumstances have occurred in the past and will reproduce themselves again at the same places, but they never remain the same, like the readers of Roland Barthes who are able to intervene the text and become the tellers themselves.

Space Reader is a group of artist that gathers together to explore, investigate, and learn about the space by creating the process of expression that conforms with content and the moments of time that are chained together and at the same time are free from one another. They have established the group and initiated the framework for this project since 2016— when they were in college.

As of present, some of the members are continuing their Master’s degree education at the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan University of Art. The five members of the group include Yu Jie Jiang, Min Yao, Xuan Huang, Chieh Ching Shih and Chun Chen Huang. It could be said that Space Reader is one of the young generation improvisational performance groups in Taipei. During 2016-2017, the group have 3 improvised subprojects including Art Project ‘Space Reading Project’ I, II, III: Gazing the Gueishan Island, Gazing the Fuzhou Island in Golden Fish Space project, and Northern Art Village in Yilan County and New Taipei City, Taiwan.

These subprojects aim to develop the methodology of presenting their works by creating syntactic structure in their improvisational performance art. They focus on the process of exploring and investigating the language of abandoned places and locations– where the owners passed away– that can be found throughout Taiwan,

22 then do the fieldworks and improvisational performances to decode the empty spaces, floors, walls, doors, windows, old furniture and broken tools with the collective consciousness that everyone shares at that moment of time, using their bodies as a foundation of perception, sense and expression.

There is a question of whether the consciousness of the past can be linked to the history of a certain place and individual experiences.

The dimensions of time and space are overlapping, emphasizing the existence of spiritual energy. For this reason, object-place are leading us to concrete facts – the traces of individual experiences that are embedded w i t h i n t h e s p a c e , wa i t i n g fo r a n o t h e r individual to create shared dialogue within that space and time. The structure and methodology of improvisation is the way to explore the territory of space and place through the field of visual arts from diverse perceptions.

This is the first time that Space Reader has traveled to Thailand. During this project, they resided and worked at About Photography. This temporary migration and residency in the designated case study area led to the question that they tried to resolve.

They gave meaning to the space that is an old building with significant architectural value and shared collective memory and consciousness with many others. This delicate experience can be compared to the artists themselves putting on the attire of the space, in order to feel its nooks and crannies, seams, textures, history of location, and the diversity of cultures. The adjustment that they have made to fit their bodies with such attire does not pose limitations to their process of learning. One can adapt t h e m se lves to b eco me famil iar with an unfamiliar space.

23 Living together in the designated case study area has posed many restrictions, but it also helps to create their collective memory of the houses they once lived in and the house they’re currently living in, where the space has cultural connectivity and stories from Taiwanese artists who used to live here. As of present, they are trying to create timeline of events and moments that were reconstructed, destroyed, born, and ended over and over during these five years. While they were talking, walking, and talking on the third floor of the building, their shadows were also dancing on the wall, floor, and ceiling.

The light projected their shadows onto the building space, and that traces perhaps make this place no longer lonely nor hollow.
