POLL: Does anyone have strong objections to core charges from OE parts dealers?
I understand the OEs have underlying reasons for doing this. From the shop’s perspective, it’s a real pain between making sure we keep the proper tag from the box or sometimes the complete packaging, communicating to blueprint, inventory of the part until the vendor picks it up, the extra accounting of entering and then at least a day later posting the credit from the vendor. We have a minimum of 10 to possibly 20 extra steps that no customer would ever pay for.

Should I Join the Collision Repair Industry? Comment by Female shop owner: “As a current (female) body shop owner (we purchased 2-1/2 years ago), I will not point you in one direction or another but will advise that the industry is tough. You must know how to go about getting paid for what you actually do rather than letting the insurance company tell you, ‘We don’t pay for that.’ This is no longer an industry, though, where a body or paint tech becomes a businessman. This is an industry of a businessman being or finding a good body or paint tech. The industry is about working smarter, not harder. And yes, I am in total agreement that today’s techs are required to know much more than ever before. You can no longer go to school for auto body because you hate reading and like the ‘hands-on’ approach. This field requires a strong ability in both areas. The missing piece you can provide in the industry is the eye for detail – the small things that keep people coming back. You would be amazed at what cleaning a few car windows can do for repeat business. I say if you want to do it, then go for it. Just because this is where you start does not mean this is where you finish. My personal motto is, ‘She believed she could, so she did.’ You will not make a fortune as a body or paint tech, but if you love what you do, the money isn’t as important.

Opportunity Knocks here was a healthy discussion recently on our website about a young woman who was debating whether to pursue a career in collision repair or graphic design. She said she loved art but also cars, so she reasoned that perhaps she could combine the two by doing auto body work. But she was afraid of how she might be received in a maledominated profession, and she was also concerned about the health risks.
T
The comments that were doled out as advice to her ran the gamut, from “run as fast as you can in the opposite direction” to “you can still make a great living in this industry.” It brought me back to my own concerns at the tender age of 19 when I applied for a parks job. I think I had read too many Stephen King novels at that point, because being that it was a blue collar job, I thought most of the guys probably wouldn’t have college degrees and thus would harass me as a “college boy.” When I expressed
these concerns to the boss, he said, “If anyone ever does that, you come to me.” Fortunately, I never did have to come to him. I was also concerned about the danger of working with heavy machinery. Again, probably because I read “The Mangler” by Stephen King where a guy gets dragged into an industrial drycleaning machine. In the end, everything worked out fine, and I look back at it now as one of the best jobs I ever had. One thing I know for sure: if this young woman does decide to work in auto body, she’ll make a heck of a lot more than I did as a park maintenance worker. And as long as she wears her personal protection equipment, she won’t have to worry about her health. She’ll have to roll with some of the jibes she’ll get as a “newbie,” but that sort of comes with the territory. I tell young kids all the time what a great opportunity this industry offers. But it’s going to take involvement and commitment from shops to nurture them along.

Why Is Everybody
Leaving Me? recently got an email from a reader that made me think a little bit. His question was: Do you have any good ideas on how to keep technicians? In my 35-plus years in the industry, I’ve counseled hundreds of shops and have had the good fortune of meeting thousands of techs. Not that this makes me any kind of expert, but I’ve developed clear opinions from these relationships and experiences. So here are my thoughts. First, let’s get the No. 1 complaint off the table: compensation. Remember, the market sets the rate. If you try to discount that rate, you’ll lose people constantly. It’s important to evaluate your market regularly and have a competitive compensation plan. Don’t do what you hear people are doing three states away or in a different market. Your business model needs to include rates in your local area that are competitive. The exception is if you wish to run a noncompetitive shop and provide less than what customers in your area expect. Evaluate your employees’ skill sets and experience and pay them accordingly. If you don’t, you’ll never get past that first hurdle of retaining good talent. The next issue is a little less clear. Since most of us out there are Baby Boomers, it’s even grayer. We were taught that we were lucky to have a job and should be grateful for a paycheck. That’s all changed. Today, it’s, “Is my shop a good place to work?” What type of environment is it? Start by looking at the office. This is as good as it gets in most shops. If you see things you don’t like, it’s only worse in the shop.
I

Remember, you set the example in the shop. If you let things slide, so will your employees. This sometimes leads to a not-so-good-looking environment. Your employees spend at least one-third of their life at work and want it to be a desirable place to be. What’s the demeanor of the shop? Do people get along, and does it foster a team environment? If not, people get petty and riffs will be ongoing. Do the workers feel valued? Positive reinforcement and a thank you go a long way. Do your people have the training and equipment they need to do their job to the best of their abilities? This is one area many owners overlook because it takes an investment to stay current. Remember, an updated item of equipment can many times pay for itself quickly in efficiency gains. New, shiny equipment at the shop across town can look pretty good to a tech who’s suffering with old technology. On the training subject, if a tech is welltrained and confident, he or she will be more efficient at the repairs. It really starts with us. People stay with organizations they like. Of course, they have to have the right skill set for their job, but we need to ensure they have a good environment to do that work in. It’s a fact that some will go just because they’re nomadic individuals. You can’t stop this behavior. The others who are good need to stay in our organizations. Be sure you’re paying attention and asking the question, “Is this a good place to work?” Remember, people are our most valuable resource. See you at NACE! BSB

Update Texas Body Shop Manager Finds Criminal Trespassing Charge Effective Tool Against Uncooperative Appraisers By Jason Stahl ne of John Borek’s favorite quotes is a wellknown one from Albert Einstein: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Borek, general manager of Autocraft Bodywerks Inc. in Austin, Texas, took that quote to heart recently when he
O
filed criminal trespass charges against a troublesome appraiser. While many in the collision industry might consider this an extreme measure, Borek disagrees. “What’s extreme is arguing and arguing over the same thing time and time again,” he said. “I understand that some people may think [filing criminal trespass charges] is bad, but at the
end of the day, you can’t just keep doing the same thing. It’s like a child – when you tell a kid not to do something and they do it, there has to be consequences.” In Texas, as a property owner, Borek says he has the right to file criminal trespass charges against someone. A process server then serves them papers and basically tells them, “If you come back
to this particular address again, you will be arrested by the Austin Police Department.” The letter from his attorney on the most recent filing stated: I represent Autocraft Bodywerks Inc. Please take notice that you are forbidden from entering the property occupied by Autocraft Bodywerks Inc., including that property located at 5411 Wasson Road, Austin, Travis County, Texas, 78745.
Registration Now Open for 2014 SEMA Show egistration to attend the 2014 SEMA Show is now available at www.SEMAShow.com/register. 䡲 Exhibitor: The exhibitor category is for company personnel working in the booths of exhibiting companies. To secure an exhibitor badge, individuals will need to have the unique password and user ID that was provided, via email, to the primary contact at the exhibiting company. The primary contact may register the entire staff at one time quickly and easily. Exhibitor badges are not to be used for non-employees, including contest winners, contractors and vendors. During registration, exhibitors will also be able to order complimentary tickets to the SEMA Industry Awards Banquet. Tickets to the banquet, which is typically attended by 3,000 showgoers, sell for $50 each. 䡲 Media: Editors and journalists covering the SEMA Show can register for complimentary media credentials using the “Media” link. Applicants may need to supply
proof of media affiliation, such as bylined articles or business cards. All approved media will be able to pick up their credentials on-site in the SEMA Show Media Center, which includes exclusive services and amenities to assist with reporting from the event. During registration, media are able to secure a ticket to the LTAA Media Preview – a brand-new event that will give media exclusive early access to new products on Monday, Nov. 3, the day before the SEMA Show officially opens. “There are many advantages to registering early for SEMA,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA VP of events and communications. “Early application expedites the registration process, which is the first step to developing a personal plan for the show. Whether you’re an exhibitor, buyer or media, having a plan in advance of the event is the best way to ensure success.”
»| Industry Update |« It does not matter what your intended business is – appraising vehicle damage, repairs, estimates or anything else – DO NOT STEP ONTO AUTOCRAFT’S PROPERTY. If you enter onto the property occupied or owned by Autocraft Bodywerks Inc., you will be committing criminal trespass and will be subject to prosecution under Texas law, including Texas Penal Code 30.05. The police will be called to arrest you if you come onto Autocraft’s property. Your criminal trespass crime would be a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $2,000, up to 180 days in jail or both. This tactic, Borek says, has worked in that it spreads the message that certain behavior won’t be tolerated. “Word gets out, and what I’ve learned – especially if [the appraisers] are independent – is that it gets their attention because it keeps them from making a living. If they have another assignment here two weeks from now, they can’t come and do it. And they’re basically keeping me from making a living if all they want to do is argue. If some appraiser comes out and all he wants to do is argue with you, it really is just a waste of my time. I’ve been here for 30 years, and I really value my time. I just can’t do the same thing over and over again and expect it to be different. History has a way of repeating itself.”
Borek has only filed such an action three times. And it’s only a last resort. Typically, he will inform the appraiser’s manager first, tell him they have an issue and request a different appraiser to come out. “Sometimes a guy will come out and say, ‘I think that fender can be straightened,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t think so,’” said Borek. “I say, ‘How many cars have you repaired?’ And they say, ‘I’ve never repaired a car in my life,’ and I say, ‘Well, I’ve repaired over 100 of that particular car and been here for 30 years and you’re telling me how to fix that car?’ They don’t know that other shops have brought this particular car to us because the bumper is
popping off because it was repaired on the fender. But you can’t explain that to them; they know it all.” Ever since filing the criminal trespass charges against the appraiser, the insurer has been sending someone else out, and Borek says they get along great. In another case, he had an issue with an appraiser, so another appraiser came along and asked if it was OK if the original appraiser could come back out, and Borek said yes. Borek’s point is that he doesn’t have a quick trigger when it comes to filing such an action, and it’s only when all other options have been exhausted. Borek says a lot of appraisers will blame their
company for not being able to pay for a certain procedure, but he doesn’t feel this is a good excuse. “In 30 years, I’ve learned that most good appraisers have a way of making everyone happy if they just use their talent,” he said. Borek wishes more shops would fight for their business like he does. “If more people did what I’m doing and these [appraisers] had five shops they couldn’t go to in a town, guess what? They’re always going to decide to work versus be shut out. Let’s meet halfway. You want to repair the fender, we’re going to replace it. Just pay us cost on the fender. Let’s move on.”
NACE/CARS Releases Training and Education Schedule NACE/CARS 2014 has released its full training and education conference program for shop owners, technicians and industry stakeholders. The schedule-at-a-glance can be viewed at www. nacexpo.com. The complexity of today’s vehicles from a collision and mechanical repair perspective is eliminating competition and reducing the number of shops in the country. Cars manufactured today require specialized tooling, training and equipment, and the use of aluminum and high-strength steels are changing the dynamics of the collision repair
industry. These are just some of the challenges that will be addressed with real-world solutions at NACE. CARS is also on track to be better than ever, with a specific focus on telematics. The Technology & Telematics Forum, a sixhour program sponsored by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, will take place Friday, Aug. 1, and offer insight on the repairability of vehicles with modern technology. In addition to the largest conference offering in NACE/CARS history, the show also will feature a number of the industry’s leading ex-
perts and speakers. “Investing in training to ensure a proper repair and remain current with today’s technology is a requirement,” said Dan Risley, ASA president and executive director. “Your customers and the success of your business are dependent upon your commitment to ongoing education. We’ve spent countless hours developing this year’s program to ensure we deliver upon our goal to assist collision and mechanical repair professionals in performing a safe and proper repair while providing efficiency and profitability.”

Where Will the New
Technicians Come From? y grandfather, who sold auto parts in the early days of cars, said if your business made a living from a community, you had an obligation to give something back. It made sense to me then and still does now. One way to give back and improve your own business at the same time is to volunteer at your local auto body vocational program. High schools, tech schools and community colleges that offer education for people interested in entering our business need your help.
M
Cries of Woe » I’m in my 44th year in our industry, and in every single one of them, a recurring cry of woe has been, “Where will new technicians come from?” I heard it in 1970 from the World War II Navy vets who learned body work from two uncles: Uncle Sam, and their favorite uncle who owned a shop. They were absolutely certain no young person could ever learn to run lead or braze panels like they could. I heard the wails again when the unicoupe car appeared on American assembly lines. Where would techs who could MIG weld and plug weld come from? I heard it again recently at the auto body advisory committee meeting at my local community college: “Where will the new technicians come from?” I’m fully aware of the statistics that say younger people are less interested in cars. Electronics, computers and laser rays are much more interesting than collision repair. It’s hard to argue with that, so where will the techs come from? How about from the cur16

rent and future student bodies in your neighborhood vo-tech program? These kids voluntarily enrolled in our trade. They wanted to learn how the repairs are performed on vehicles. It’s hard to say they mistook the refinishing classes for Roman History 101; these are people who want to do the work we need done.
Negative Attitudes » Sadly, most shop owners I talk with have a low regard for graduates of local programs. Certainly, some programs are better than others – better funded, better instructed, provide better job placement, etc. So those definitely turn out better-equipped kids than others. But one of the significant distinctions that the local shop owner often misses is the huge difference between “attending” the auto body program and “graduating” from the program. In too many of the stories I hear from shop owners who explain why they detest their local programs, they tell me earnestly of the time they hired a vo-tech kid and _____. Fill in the blank. The problems are always around the new kid’s poor skill set, work ethic or attitude, and the shop owner ends up saying he’ll never hire another person from any program. And he never does. Most likely, the poorly performing kid was not a graduate of the program. Graduation from a good program means things like regular testing of skill sets, consistent attendance records and a realistic expectation of their first jobs. No program will ever be able to turn out seasoned auto body technicians. They get seasoned by working in a body shop! But
Circle 17 for Reader Service
»| Clark’s Corner |« wouldn’t you prefer to start with the kids who learned how to do things correctly rather than some other kid with two years’ experience in one poorly run shop down the road? Neither one of those kids will be pulling a late-model Jaguar back to square or blending a sail panel on a new Mercedes anytime soon. They’ll be doing
the grunt work that makes them seasoned. Both want into our industry, which is a good thing, but only one spent the time and the money to get educated on collision repair.
Instructor Woes » I can hear some of you saying, “The instructor at my local program is a former [employee,
competitor, lifelong enemy], and he doesn’t know anything about anything!” You have to want to be a votech instructor. I’ve met lots of them, and they’re usually older, former technicians who wanted two things: to slow down from the frantic flaghour racetrack, and to make their school’s current auto body programs better. What they soon face is a maze of local, county, state and federal regulations about who, what, when, where and how much it will cost to provide useful, compliant and legal vocational education. You think your shop has red tape and Catch 22-style issues with some of the insurers you deal with? Red tape lives and breeds in publicly (or privately) funded vocational education. What made the most sense locally wasn’t necessarily the decision of distant bureaucrats and legislators. I’ve seen many newly hired auto body instructors who are soon disappointed when they find out that the educational hierarchy and volumes of compliance rules make their ideas about speedy program changes impossible. But you can help them. Vocational advisory boards are a key part of every vo-tech program. In many cases, one of the many educational rules is that the advisory board must be made up of current members of the appropriate industry.
Change From Within » My experience is that it’s pointless to try and change things from outside the decision circle. Instead, you have to change the decision makers’ minds. You can complain to your peers over cocktails about the quality of the local auto body program graduates, the lack of instruction by the lazy instructors and just how far out of touch the program really is, but it won’t change the program in the least. Bringing it up at the next advisory board meeting will at least give you the satisfaction that they heard your issues and have the ability to make changes to their program. Whatever your local program’s curCircle 18 for Reader Service

»| Clark’s Corner |« rent faults, it’s filled with kids who want to get into our business. I’ve been on my local auto body advisory board for 44 years, off and on. I delivered the first air compressor to their first rented building as a kid with my dad. I’ve known almost all of the program’s instructors when they were actually working in the industry. To a man, they honestly wanted to teach kids how to make a good living doing collision repair. Some instructors were painters during their time in real shops, while others made their employer’s frame machine sing until they couldn’t climb all over it anymore. Several had shop management experience before their turn as instructors. The vo-tech shop moves at a slower pace than a busy collision shop, and that may seem wrong to you. Want to slow your shop’s routine down to match? Imagine having to

Talk about herding cats – and cats with an enormous excess of hormones and a stunning dearth of common sense!
A Little Secret » I’ll share a secret some of the smartest operators I know in this business always employ. While all the kids who enrolled in the auto body program planned to be huge successes, only a few of them really excelled. The top students in the class have the grades, skills and discipline to become great techs. Well, you say, I would hire those kids if I knew who they were. You know where they went to work? boards, have the ear of the instructors, provide part-time work for good students and always hire the best ones before they ever leave school. Those shops hired some young and hungry techs who have already seen how collision repair is correctly done. For sure, our industry needs new technicians. Rather than trying to teach a kid with a degree in English or a history of flipping burgers to hang a fender, hire a kid who graduated from a vo-tech program in auto body. Want the best kids? Get on the advisory board and meet them. BSB Mark R. Clark is owner of Professional PBE Systems in Waterloo, Iowa. It’s All In a Name—
But Who Owns It? ur phones at Optima Automotive were recently ringing off the hook with body shop owners asking questions about domain names and who owns them. I’ve covered this before, but it warrants another column because this issue can cause major headaches, especially if you don’t own the rights to your own business domain name. Obviously, the people calling us didn’t read my column last time or they wouldn’t be crying out for help now, so I encourage everyone to stay abreast of the latest SEO information by reading me every month in BodyShop Business.
O
Domain Names » First, what is a domain name? The domain is what is used to assign Web addresses to servers. Your “URL,” or Web address, uses your domain name. For example, yourbodyshopname.com. No one actually “owns” their domain name; in reality, you own the “rights” to use that domain name – or someone does, and that’s a problem. If you don’t own the rights to your domain, you could be setting yourself up for trouble. Here are three examples from last month’s phone calls: Tennessee – A shop in Knoxville called to say they wanted us to build them a website. They told their former developer that they were moving on with a new developer (us) and would like information about their domain registration. Turns out the original developer purchased the rights to this shop’s domain name when they set up their site a few years ago. And now that the shop plans to move on, this developer was 22
June 2014 | BodyShop Business
refusing to transfer the ownership rights to this shop – that is, unless the shop wanted to pay an exorbitant fee for it. Registering and owning the rights to a domain name costs about $10 to $12 per year. That’s it. But we’ve heard stories like these where developers penalize you to the tune of $1,000 or more, or even offer to “rent” the rights to you for a ridiculous fee. In this case, the former developer will shut down access to the site simply by telling the domain registration company that there is no website associated with that domain name. That’s bad news for this shop that not only has their website under that domain name, but also their email addresses. I’ll bet a lot of you do, too. It’s a bummer if you don’t own the rights to your own domain and have an unethical developer. West Coast – A shop called us to say their website was down and asked if we could fix it. We host the website on our servers, so we jumped right in to see what was wrong. The site was on the server and all was fine, so we dug a little deeper and found that the shop’s domain registration had expired. That’s different than website hosting, where the files that contain the actual website are housed. We brought this to their attention, researched who the site was registered to and gave them the person’s name. Turns out this individual had passed away two years ago, so the renewal notices were emailed to a deceased person. The deadline came and went, and the domain registration lapsed. When that happens, the domain registration company (through their domain name servers) no longer tells
Circle 23 for Reader Service
»| Web Presence |« computers where a website is hosted. As a result, it appears that the website is down. So we’re working with this shop to communicate these facts with the registration company so we can try and get the rights transferred to the shop owner. But tick, tick, tick… each day that passes, the website isn’t online and their emails aren’t working either. These are missed opportunities to fix cars. Georgia – A panicked shop owner called and said their website was down. They found this out when they got a notice in the mail that their business domain name was for sale. We see lots of those notices, and you should disregard them when you receive them unless they’re from your actual domain registration service. But in this case, the shop checked to see if their site was in fact down, and it
24
June 2014 | BodyShop Business
was. There’s a 30-day grace period to get things right after this happens, and after that the domain goes up for sale. And that’s what happened. A domain broker (vultures, in my opinion) picked it up and paid only $12 for it. The shop went into their junk email file and found at least 10 notices about their domain registration renewal, realizing they missed it. Now, this broker would be happy to sell the domain back to the shop for $2,000!

Tips Refinish BASF Sherwin-Williams Selecting a refinish manufacturer is one of the most important business decisions a shop owner and/or manager will ever make. It’s not just choosing a paint company, but deciding who your business partner will be. This means, first and foremost, choosing a reputable company known for high-quality, innovative products with warranties to back them up. It means choosing a refinish manufacturer that provides the ultimate in service and technical expertise. They should provide your staff with the latest training, from hands-on application techniques to business management practices (i.e. more accurate estimating, lean practices and inventory management). It means choosing a partner to help increase your shop’s productivity and profitability through access to business consultants, operational assistance and preferred customer network benefits. Finally, it means selecting a partner that provides great color, the latest fast and easy-to-apply products, and a cutting edge online color retrieval system.
When selecting refinish products for a body shop, collision repairers need products that meet or exceed their customers’ expectations regarding color match, speed and quality. This includes the tools paint technicians use to do their color match. It’s also important to find products that are ready for the new low-VOC laws and provide the flexibility today’s shops require to be productive. The refinish manufacturer should stand behind their products with a guarantee and offer additional tools to help managers stay competitive and grow their business. Some of these tools may include business services that provide KPI benchmarking and help the shop improve their touch time and cycle time. Having OEM approvals from all manufacturers for its refinish products and knowledgeable sales personnel also are key as shops need to market and grow their business.
PPG Automotive Refinish A successful refinish color system must be aligned to the latest OEM color trends. For example, many of the newest color offerings are highly chromatic and translucent with exceptional depth, brilliance and clarity. Matching these sophisticated colors in the collision center is best achieved with a refinish system that can easily mimic the factory application process. Like the modern factory process that employs vibrant, translucent pigments and colored undercoats, PPG’s waterborne basecoat system features specific toners 26

purposely designed to allow a gray undercoat to play its role in creating the final color match. Each PPG color formula is assigned a specific shade of spectral gray undercoat, from five available. It’s interesting to note that the “spray to hiding” maxim no longer applies on theses types of colors when using this modern repair process. “Apply to match” or perceived hiding is the more effective technique for creating accurate color alignment to the original finish.

»| Buying Tips |« Martin Senour Refinish systems come in many shapes and sizes. When choosing the right system for your shop, take into account the applied cost of the product. By offering premium performance, color and cycle times, premium refinish systems can reduce your labor costs and increase your shop’s overall pro-
ductivity. If your shop does not require all of the bells and whistles that come with a premium refinish system, there are good alternatives out there, but you might have to sacrifice performance. By choosing to use a premium refinish system, you’re putting your shop in the best position to compete
in your market. Another consideration in selecting refinish products is the source from whom you purchase them. For example, Martin Senour is the exclusive supplier of automotive refinish products to NAPA. Together, they provide the single source for all your automotive and PBE needs.
Valspar Automotive In our research, Valspar Automotive has found the following two main drivers for choosing a paint line: high-quality color match, and profitability on paint and materials. With color match, you don’t want to spend precious labor hours tinting paint because of poor quality color matches. Profitability can be achieved with the price of paint and the productivity built into the paint system. When choosing a refinish partner, choose a manufacturer that has proven expertise on a global scale to ensure product diversity, production efficiencies and a more comprehensive color library. Make sure the one you choose has quality R&D capabilities and color services. Your partner’s culture is also important; their values should be in line with your business’ best interests, and they should treat you like a true partner, not just a number. »| Buying Tips |« Quest Automotive Products Collision shops can’t afford to lose customers or tarnish their reputations. Selecting quality refinish goods with a lifetime warranty is a must, as well as using products from one manufacturer since using the entire system eliminates problems and allows full support from the manufacturer. Prod-
ucts should also be easy to use, productive and cost effective. Paints should cost the collision center no more than 5 percent of its total sales, and allied products should cost no more than 2.5 percent of total sales. Shops are often misled with big discounts or pre-bates, costing them their margin on P&M. Efficient shops can
get their cost on P&M down to 6 percent or lower by selecting a Quest Branded Line and using the products properly. Collision shops should only partner with paint manufacturers that warranty their products, provide field support (sales and tech), offer certified training and, most importantly, make products that are easy to use and yield high margins. Paint shouldn’t be an expense but rather a profit center for the shop.
Chemspec Collision repairers should be looking for a premium paint system that will keep their costs in check. When it comes to paint, trust is everything, which is why you want a paint manufacturer that does extensive testing and evaluating of every product and stands behind their brands in writing. »| Buying Tips |« U.S. Chemical & Plastics There are many things repairers should consider when selecting refinish products. Many end users too often focus solely on price when they should focus on quality. For example, when selecting a gallon of lightweight filler, we would always recommend a premium filler over an economy filler. Economy fillers
are much less expensive than premium, but you don’t get all the benefits of a premium product. For instance, economy fillers aren’t stain-free and don’t have maximum adhesion qualities, whereas premium fillers have maximum adhesion and better sanding properties. At $48 per gallon, premium filler may seem expensive, but when
you consider how much use per job, the cost averages about $1 per dent. Plus, it protects against potential issues and redos that may arise. Here are some things to look for in a refinish partner: Consistent, quality products; no surprises in the can; knowledgeable reps/technical staff; feet on the street who can help; easy accessibility to technical information; ability to train your people to be productive; history of commitment to the industry; a company that will be there in the long run; technological updates in materials; and consistent availability of products in the distribution channel. Also, you want to be sure they’re a brand you can trust. U.S. Chemical has been around since 1950 and is a trusted name. There are so many new manufacturers entering the market with promises of quality and low price, and the products are inconsistent at best.
Bernardo Ecenarro It’s very important to highlight the concept of productivity. More than just single products; we’re talking about the processes to repair a car in the least time possible, saving both time and costs. For example, processes such as primers direct to metal wet to wet with our product BESA-WET; air dry clear in 40 minutes with our clearcoat URKIROCKET; etc. The first thing collision repairers should look for when selecting a refinish manufacturer as a partner is the advantages that this manufacturer can offer to the body shop: economical advantages, color service, logistics, speedy answers, etc. The addition of all these values, more than one advantage separately, can differentiate a company among its competitors. COVER STORY
Backing up owner Ben Krom in his effort to carve out a niche for his company in the collision market is (left to right) office manager/airbrush artist Leslie Scholl, metal tech Jim Harris and metal tech/painter Frank Frazzitta.
Ben Krom used persistence and networking to achieve his dream of opening his own collision/restoration shop – and nearly two years later, he’s profitable and having a blast. By Jason Stahl here’s a scene in the beginning of the holiday movie favorite “The Santa Clause” where, after Tim Allen completes his first night as Santa Claus and still believes it has all been a bad dream, he flies off in his sleigh to the North Pole and shouts, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night…and in the morning, I’m getting a CAT scan!” In the face of dwindling profits, increasing insurer intrusion, increasingly head-scratching technology in vehicles, increasing environmental regulations, a decreasing technician pool and decreasing crashes in today’s collision repair industry, body shop owners might have also suggested a CAT scan to Ben Krom when he first proposed opening his own shop several years ago. But it wasn’t for all those reasons that Krom had never opened his own shop; it was simply funding. But a customer solved that problem.
T
No Money » The customer had asked Krom to restore his 1963 split-window Corvette, and one day during the restoration asked Krom why he didn’t have his own shop. “You’re great with customers, and you do great work,” the customer said. “Well, it takes a lot of capital and I don’t have the money,” Krom replied. “Well, what if you had someone to help you?” A deal was struck: Krom would restore another of the

Krom followed that up with $15,000 from his local bank and $35,000 from a county economic development agency, which was used to purchase equipment. But it wasn’t that easy, and it didn’t happen lickety split.
“I kept getting shot down after going to eight different banks because I had a poor credit history and no collateral,” says Krom. “What I would tell any business owner or someone who has a dream like this is that the key to it is persistence and who you know.” Krom got to know several different
people who became key players in opening his business, one being the chairman of the board of his county economic development agency. He worked on a couple of his cars and was introduced to him by a friend. “You have to talk the talk and be persistent and show you’re going to make this happen one way or another,” Krom says. “Every time I left the bank, I said, ‘This is going to happen one way or another, with or without you.’ A lot of guys try this, get shot down, put their tail between their legs and walk away saying, ‘Well, I tried.’” After two long years, during which he also wrote a business plan (something most aspiring business owners never do, greatly increasing the odds they will fail) and researched industry statistics and trends by visiting www.bodyshopbusiness.com, the powers that be finally decided to give Krom his chance and take a risk on him.
It’s Official » As fate would have it, Krom found the perfect building to house his shop – an old dealership. He had his eye on it for several years, but it was never for rent. Then one day as he was driving by, he noticed a “for rent” sign, called the owner and scheduled a meeting the next day. Three weeks later, the building was his, and West Branch Collision & Classics was born. On Nov. 4, 2013, the business celebrated its one-year anniversary. Krom exceeded first-year sales projections by more than $100,000 and took home a comfortable salary for himself. “I was able to hire people and give back to the community in more ways than I can count. My office manager complains and says I would have more money if I would stop giving so much away,” Krom says. “We support local athletic teams and donate to libraries, theaters and other organizations. And we don’t do it to get customers; it’s my personal philosophy that I have a responsibility to give back to the communities that support us.” Circle 38 for Reader Service

COVER STORY » Defying the Odds Located in rural Walton, N.Y., Krom admits some might feel his market was an easier one to succeed in. But the fact is that, with six body shops in a town of only 5,000 residents and two in the village, it’s a highly competitive area. Krom learned from his experience working in other shops for 20 years and set out to do what no one else was doing. “I saw what was going on in all the different shops,” he says. “You had one shop that did great quality work but the owner was a jerk and treated customers poorly. There was another shop where the guy was nice but the quality was poor. At another shop, the quality was great, but it took six weeks to get a car done. I saw no shop in this area that was providing all these qualities under one roof,

COVER STORY » Defying the Odds
Local art for sale and custom refinish work set West Branch Collision & Classics apart from its competitors.
Keeping an Open Mind rom feels like one of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not keeping an open mind. “Far too many times, I’ve seen shop owners I worked for who rest on their laurels, become king of the mountain, feel like they’re the best and feel like there’s no way they can improve and are not willing to change or think outside the box,” he says. “From day one, I always said I have to be willing to keep an open mind as far as my business philosophy is concerned.” An example of that open mindedness is the approach Krom took with a woman he hired as his office manager. When he found out she was also a talented artist, he decided to start offering airbrushing and marketing the service. She is now airbrushing motorcycle and snowmobile helmets, Harley fenders, cars and more. This same woman also convinced him to change his front showroom. Initially, he was showcasing classic cars in that space that he had restored, but it gave people the impression that restoration was all his shop did. “They forgot about the word ‘collision’ in our title,” says Krom. “People would say, ‘Why don’t you bring it down to West Branch?’ And they would say, ‘No, they just do old cars, not modern ones.’” So she suggested that Krom turn the showroom into a gift shop filled with art by local artists: pottery, hand-blown glass, photography, paintings and handmade jewelry. Which he did – and now it’s yet another thing that sets his shop apart from the rest. And he feels that’s key, especially if a consolidator were to move to his area at some point. “You’re writing an estimate, they’re perusing the cases and the next thing you know they’re buying gifts for Christmas,” says Krom. “I don’t think the ‘big boxes’ will find this market viable, but keeping an open business philosophy and knowing you have to make changes – not only because the public wants something different but because you need to do something different to keep the public coming in – is crucial.”

so I made that my ultimate goal. You put all those things under one roof, including getting the car done as quickly and safely as possible with high quality, and it’s a home run.” Also, Krom decided to put special emphasis on being as friendly as possible and showing empathy. “The first thing I say [when a customer comes in] is, ‘I hope everyone is okay and no one was injured.’ We also inform them so they’re empowered with the knowledge to make the right decision.” At 7,000 square feet, Krom’s shop is the largest of the eight in his area. The other shops are generally one- to two-man facilities, but are wellknown and established. His shop is the only one in the county that has both a Facebook page and a website, another factor he considers critical to his success. “I cannot emphasize enough how important social media is to a business owner,” says Krom. “We get so many customers off Facebook. A customer came in a year after we opened and said, ‘I’ve been watching your Facebook page since the day you moved in, and I always said to myself if I ever need body work done, I’ll go there.’” Krom will also get messages on his Facebook site from customers saying, “Hey, I hit a deer this morning, so I’m going to stop in,” or “Hey, are you open on Saturday? I need an estimate.” Krom has also advertised in local newspapers, radio and billboards. He advertised on a billboard twice last year, once in the spring and once in the fall. He also bought a 30-second spot on the radio that plays every time a school closing or weather delay is announced. He spends less than 10 percent of his gross sales on advertising, but even still he wonders if it’s too much be-

COVER STORY » Defying the Odds cause word of mouth is so crucial. “Word of mouth in a rural area is so important. You know, ‘My brother got his car fixed there and you did a great job.’ It accounts for 90 percent of sales.”
Collision vs. Restoration » Krom estimates that 15 percent of the work
his shop performs is restoration. The difference, he says, is that his shop charges a higher labor rate for restoration than collision – $75 per hour vs. $50 – whereas most shops don’t. “I think it’s a huge mistake with the amount of time and effort that goes into restoration,” he says. “I spend as much time doing research
and communicating with customers and parts vendors as I do out there on the car, and I’m not getting paid for that. Also, consider the attention to detail we provide, the documentation and the photos. Each tech has a dedicated digital camera and documents every single little patch and piece of trim. The customer ends up getting 300 to 400 pictures on a flash drive. That’s why we charge more.”
Insurer Relations » Krom understands the conflicts shops and insurers frequently have, but after smooth sailing in year one, he’s frankly mystified at the concept of shops blaming insurers for their problems. “I hear body shops complain all the time that insurers are screwing them, and I’m sitting here laughing,” he says. “I’m turning a great profit in my first year in business and having a blast. What are these people complaining about? What are they doing wrong, and what am I doing right? Run a tight ship, watch how much paint you mix, don’t throw stuff away – a lot of it is common sense. You know how a lot of other shops are making a profit? They’re getting paid for an OE part to put on an aftermarket part, or they’re getting paid to replace a part and they’ll go ahead and fix it. But I don’t play those games. Everything I do is straight up on the books.” Krom says he writes straightforward estimates that aren’t “fluffed” because he thinks the insurer will knock it down. As a result, he has gained a solid reputation with local adjusters. “They know the quality of work I do and that I don’t mess around. I’ll even ask them what labor rate they’re paying. If it’s $48, I’ll write it for $48 instead of arguing with them for $50. If that’s what they’re paying, then that’s what I’ll do it at – and I still make a profit.” In his 14 years working with adjusters in his area, Krom says he got to know the adjusters well, and he Circle 44 for Reader Service

I just want to get paid for what I’m going to do to the car. If you want to argue with me on whether something is really necessary to do to the car, sure, let’s talk about it. But if I’m going to do it to the car and you agree to it, then you will pay me for it. “It comes down to your attitude and mindset. Adjusters walk into a typical shop and they’re under a lot of stress, packed with work and overloaded with estimates, and they face an owner who has that old-school mentality of, ‘The insurer is the enemy,’ so right off the bat you have bad attitudes flying around. I don’t

do that. It’s rare I have an issue. In one-and-a-half years, I’ve only had one issue with one adjuster, and after he realized I just wanted to repair the car correctly and get paid for it, he ended up putting in a supplement and paying me for everything I needed to do. The next time he came in, we had no problem at all.”
You’re supposed to have fun at work, right? And what better way to do that than celebrate your anniversary with a live band and a party at your shop?

Growth » Krom isn’t taking a very numbers-like or scientific approach to his growth plans in the future. To him, it’s more about the feeling he gets in his stomach when he goes to work. “My goal is really to wake up and drive to work happy. If I’m making a certain salary, paying the bills, able to give back to the community and repair people’s cars on time, then whether I’m doing $750,000 or $1 million doesn’t concern me. I want to be happy and have fun.” BSB

PROFIT IN THE PAINT SHOP
Profit in the Paint Shop Series:
Spray Guns Spray gun efficiency plays into overall paint process efficiency, which is why a strict maintenance schedule is so crucial. Part 6 of a six-part series on how to maximize profit in the paint shop.
By Carl Wilson f there’s one piece of equipment that epitomizes the painter and the paint shop, it’s the spray gun. That’s not the case with painters in other industries, but for us, a painter isn’t a painter without the spray gun.
I
Over the Years » We’ve certainly seen many spray guns over the decades. Although there are operating principles and functions that remain the same, some have been improved upon, and some even outright changed. Yet through all the changes and improvements, the one variable component that has remained unquestionably the most important is the operator. Notwithstanding, even the most experienced and forwardthinking painter cannot overcome physics, the limitations of design or the lack of equipment maintenance. Market demands have driven most spray gun innovations over the years, but we must also consider the regulatory compliance requirements that have changed the landscape of our inSpray guns have come a long way from this early HVLP version.
48

dustry. The regulations followed the market-driven innovations, but by now, I believe the two factions are pulling the wagon toward greater transfer efficiency. Of course, that’s not the only consideration or else we would still be using a paint brush or electro-static painting and achieving 100 percent transfer efficiency. There is no brush or electro-static rig I’m aware of that can adequately duplicate any suspended metallic paint, let alone a three-stage paint job. Speed of the operation has also been a driving force in market innovations, and I suspect it will continue to be.
Changes and Challenges » Before we discuss a painter’s obligation to his spray gun and the efficiency equation, I can’t resist cruising down memory lane and considering some of the changes and challenges we’ve conquered to underscore the importance of proper equipment. My first spray gun was a Bink’s #7 from my father. What a workhorse! Fiftyfive pounds of pressure, and you had fantastic atomization of even the most viscous enamel. Push the material through a pressure pot and you could get yourself a 24-inch fan pattern. Talk about fast on the big jobs. But that came with a price: lousy transfer efficiency. It wouldn’t be considered a viable tool choice today by a material-conscious owner/manager.
Circle 49 for Reader Service
PROFIT IN THE PAINT SHOP » Part 6 The gravity feed spray gun achieved a better rate of transfer by simple physics. There was no need for the air-pressure a standard syphon feed gun required to draw material up and out of the cup, so there was less blow back and overspray. Back when I knew everything, I laughed at the clumsy gravity feed gun the Europeans were using and knew it would never catch on here. Today, I know painters who have never used anything but a gravity feed gun and couldn’t imagine life without one. It truly is a fantastic design. High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) equipment, while not new, turned out to be the answer to the regulatory demands we experienced in Southern California in the 1980s. The decadesold vacuum cleaner-type HVLP wasn’t going to solve the problem for us, so existing spray gun technology was “converted” to HVLP. Hey, they were scrambling too! An additional hurdle

stable of spray guns has eased painters’ grief – guns with interior air passages designed for optimum air flow; air caps with air shear considerations built into the design; fluid nozzles that are sized and aimed specifically at a given paint technology, such as waterborne. There was no way to choke down that old No. 7 and deliver less material with less pressure and achieve satisfactory results; that’s akin to trying to get good gas mileage from a bigblock V-8 by feathering the accelerator or installing a single barrel carburetor. There’s better support and guidance from the spray gun manufacturers today as well. They leave little room for error by working with paint manufacturers to establish the best setups for the various paint products and then by educating painters.
Circle 51 for Reader Service
PROFIT IN THE PAINT SHOP » Part 6 Gun Efficiency » There are three main areas to consider for gun efficiency. First is the proper gun setup for the paint product being used. Don’t guess. Regardless of your preferred gun manufacturer, get the proper nozzle/needle/cap combination for the product. That’s No. 1, and at times it will mean a new spray gun.
No. 2 is the proper application of the product, according to both the paint and spray gun manufacturer. Again, don’t guess. There are specific air pressure, distance and overlap recommendations as well as temperature and humidity considerations. Therefore, get the proper information for your environment. While critical to get right,
Circle 52 for Reader Service

these two variables alone – gun setup and application – will become second nature. As such, you won’t even really give it much thought once you’re over the learning curve. Don’t let that be the way you approach No. 3. But before I get to No. 3, which is key to consistency, I think it’s important to stress the absolute necessity of consistent air pressure when talking about spray gun efficiency. One of our goals is consistency and repeatability. This is what allows us to paint fenders and hoods off of cars and have them match and what makes the color library so valuable. Air pressure has a tremendous effect on consistency, and to minimize that, we must regulate the air. If your booth is like most, the air is regulated to about 120 pounds of pressure. We utilize that kind of pressure when we’re blowing off the vehicle. We then “regulate” the pressure down with a cheater valve attached to the gun. That is not regulating the air. The cheater valve is like putting your thumb over a garden hose; you’ve cut down the volume but increased the velocity. So you further throttle down the air volume to achieve the “pressure” you’re after. If the pressure before the “valve” fluctuates, then the pressure after the “valve” also fluctuates. You need an actual diaphragm-type regulator to throttle down the pressure properly. If you choke down the pressure with a cheater valve, you leave yourself open to air line fluctuations due to the pressure in the compressor’s tank dropping and building as other techs tap into the air supply. This leads to inconsistent pressure and inconsistent application. It may not matter if you’re painting school bus yellow, but I suspect the lion’s share of your jobs are metallic. Consistent pressure does matter. The answer is either throttling down the wall-mounted regulator or having an actual gun-mounted regulator. A bit larger than a gun-mounted cheater valve, the regulator has a diaphragm. An easy test to see if you’re using a cheater valve or regulator is to set it at 15 pounds or so and pull the trigger,
Circle 53 for Reader Service
PROFIT IN THE PAINT SHOP » Part 6 then dial the fan adjustment to the smallest pattern. If you have a cheater valve, the pressure will increase by a noticeable amount. If it’s a regulator, it won’t. By the way, the vast majority of painters, in my observation, use a cheater valve and blame the inconsistencies on the product being sprayed. In addition to a regulator, high-flow air fittings should be utilized, as well as an air line with 5/16-inch I.D. minimum, 3/8-inch being even better. Finally, in ring No. 3, we have gun maintenance. It’s so easy, but so commonly neglected. Oh I know, the gun looks great, and it’s going in the automatic gun washer after each job. And I know, not only is that seldom enough, a poorly maintained gun washer does more harm than good. Ever wash dishes? Or the car? Do you use a sponge or rag of some sort, or just spray things off with a hose? Of course you wash it first, then rinse.

PROFIT IN THE PAINT SHOP » Part 6 decently clean solvent for a month or two, depending on the volume of vehicles you paint. That’s a lot of “ifs” and one “maybe.” Take away those ifs and you probably have a shopowned gun cleaner that never gets maintained and is full of sticky, soupy gravy. Worse yet, perhaps you’re operating on the edge of insanity and using an open “birdbath” full of thinner for cleaning purposes. While these methods are temporary at best and dangerous at worst, they represent only a precursor of spray gun mainte-
nance. I have yet to meet a painter (myself included) who tore his gun down each time and re-lubed it during reassembly. I spent 30 years as a flatrate collision repair refinisher, and I didn’t always maintain my equipment properly. I didn’t think I had time. I didn’t understand the relationship that exists between spray gun maintenance and accuracy and consistency, nor how that relates to efficiency.
Accuracy » You might be tired of me droning on about it, but there is nothing
faster than accuracy. Accuracy is a byproduct of consistency. How does this relate to spray gun maintenance? Here’s a question for painters: Have you ever torn down a gun, soaked it, scrubbed it, rinsed it, lubed it and reassembled it, test drove it, then proclaimed, “I forgot how awesome this gun sprays?” Me too. I made that statement in front of my brother, a Marine Corps helicopter mechanic, who replied, “You should never be able to tell the difference.” From his perspective of keeping a Huey from falling out of the sky, you performed routine scheduled maintenance rather than waiting for a sputtering engine to fail. So how often do you need to perform that routine maintenance? That depends on your daily gun cleaning habits previously mentioned, as well as volume. Don’t be the guy who needs to keep a fire extinguisher close by in order to have the wire holding the maintenance/inspection card handy for poking out dirty air cap holes. Instead, be the guy whose daily maintenance keeps those holes clear. There are fantastic cleaning kits available today that simply didn’t exist in days gone by. Invest in your own gun washer. They’re pretty affordable these days, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t make that investment sooner. One more thing to mention regarding automatic gun washers and air pressure: If you fail to isolate the interior air passages of your spray gun while it’s in a gun washer, or otherwise fail to keep the air passages clean, consistency will suffer due to an incremental buildup of crud in the air passages. This can restrict passage size, which in turn acts like the cheater valve and increases velocity despite what the gauge says. Dirty, sticky cleaning solvent hastens this effect. I’ve also seen shops that didn’t wow me. I started asking all the shops, “What makes you run?” The “wow” shops all had the same answer: investing in employees. Not just training, but including them on shop issues. Creating a team, not just employees. Helping them see the big issues and understand why things need to be done. Accountability was a common word used. The “not-so-wow” shops had excuse after excuse, blaming someone else. Accountability struck a chord in my head.

How Are Your
Shop’s Welds? When was the last time you checked your welds? Remember, it isn’t just your reputation on the line. Your customers are betting their lives on these welds. By Mitch Becker hen I sat down to write this article, I tried to think of a clever opening paragraph. When I couldn’t come up with anything, I wasn’t too upset because I realized being clever wasn’t important – but doing quality welds is. Asking “How are your shop’s welds?” is a serious question with serious ramifications. It’s also a controversial subject. Some may be offended, others may be mortified. Still others may learn. The questions are familiar. For technicians, they are: How good are

your welds? How do you know? For managers, the questions are: Do you know if a weld is good or not? How do you know?
Wow and Not-So-Wow » Before I go any further, let me preface this article by saying that as I travel this country and see many types of shops from all different areas, I’m tickled at how much pride many technicians take in their work. The quality in this industry keeps amazing me. In the last year, I’ve been seriously wowed on my trips. But
and important procedures the collision industry does is weld. We do various types of welds, including Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) in the form of Metal Active Gas Welding (MAG) with 75 percent argon/25 percent CO2 (or a similar combination) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) with 100 percent argon. This includes aluminum and silicon bronze welding. Many shops have also invested in a Squeeze Type Resistance Spot Welder (STRSW). No matter what type of welding or machine you have in your shop, the question to all technicians and managers is: How good are your welds? When was the last time you checked? The I-CAR welding test (WCS03) showed me some interesting things, including that many technicians are great welders. It also showed that many technicians don’t know how to set up a welder. Do yours? Do you? Ask most technicians who took the I-CAR WCS03 test and they’ll tell you they learned a lot about welds and machines. Most comment that the test improved their welding and understanding of the importance each weld has to a vehicle structure.
TECHNICAL » How Are Your Shop’s Welds? Training for many like myself was a long time ago, so many basics have been forgotten. I don’t know of any profession where, after a long time, a refresher course isn’t needed.
Good vs. Bad » What makes a good weld? Without getting too technical, it takes:
1. A person to weld. (This includes the ability to see where they’re welding). 2. A welder that is correct and set correctly for the material to weld. 3. Training of the operator to use the welder. If any of these three categories aren’t working correctly, a bad weld
will be made or won’t be depending on how you look at it. So let’s break some basics down.
Technicians 1. Do they have the correct safety equipment? Protective clothing? Respirators? Do they use them? 2. Vision. Do they wear glasses? If a technician needs to put on glasses to read instructions or car labels, glasses or cheaters might need to be one of their required tools. You need to see the weld to make a quality weld. 3. A welding visor seems to be an option for many technicians. “Look away” welders are abundant in our industry. If you hear or see a welder, check to see if they’re wearing a visor. There seem to be a lot of hand shielders, too, or people who can see the weld just by holding up their hands in front of the arc. However, this will burn out your eyes quickly. 4. Respirator. Welding galvanized steels and other metals may produce fumes that contain heavy metals, which can lead to serious health issues. Many shops I see forgo the respirators and instead have fans blowing on technicians. The problem with this is that the shielding gas you need to make a quality weld also gets blown away.
Welders 1. Proper power supply. Do you have extension cords attached? Are you supposed to? Does your shop have enough power at that outlet? If four other people are operating equipment on that same circuit, who might not be getting correct power? 2. Properly maintained machine. Are the tips correct and not damaged? Is the nozzle in good shape and correct for the application? Are the rollers for the wire clean and correct? Improperly maintained machines are a big reason for failed welds and technicians struggling to weld. This has a huge impact on production. 3. Proper wire. Is the tensile Circle 60 for Reader Service

Is the wire diameter correct? 4. Settings. Are the settings for the material correct? Check inside the wire panel for directions on this. 5. Gas and gas settings. What type of gas? Are you supposed to be MIG or MAG welding? What PSI should the gas be?
Training 1. Does the technician know how to set up the machine? This sounds like a “duh” statement, but you would be surprised at how many don’t know how to do this. They just keep making adjustments until it sounds good. 2. Do they understand the parameters of the adjustments? Just because it sounds good doesn’t mean they’re making good welds. 3. Do they know how to prep metal for welding? Do they understand thickness of material? Corrosion protection? Contamination? 4. What type of weld do they need to make? Continuous plug stitch or skip? 5. Depending on the type of welding required for specific metals (wire or weld), do they use the push or pull technique? 6. Do they have or use a shunt during STRSW or spot welding? 7. Do they know when MIG brazing is required? I could ask many more questions in each category, but I think you get the idea. If you’re a shop owner or manager and your answer to these questions is yes for every technician who welds in your shop, awesome! Now, just one last item needs to be done: show me. I don’t want to see how pretty the weld is; I want to see how strong it is. A big wake-up call is a video in the new I-CAR course (FFR01) that shows a weld being done on a frame. One welder was properly powered, and one wasn’t. The welder that was set correctly and had the proper amperage to weld the frame did great. The welder that was underpowered made a good-looking weld, but the weld failed miserably. The lesson here is that looks can be deceiving.
Test Welds » Because looks can be deceiving, I’m a big fan of test welds prior to welding on a vehicle. A test weld is the exact weld being made on the same thickness and position of material, preferably damaged metal from the vehicle that’s going to be discarded. Following the test weld, a destructive test done in a vise will properly indicate if you’re set to weld the vehicle. Another reason to do a test weld is that many welders don’t make a good quality weld cold. Electronics, Circle 62 for Reader Service

Too many times, technicians get out the welder and set up and start welding on a vehicle. The person who used the welder before could have made the settings way off, or the tip could be garbage. It may take a weld or two or four or five to figure it out. The point is, how many practice welds does a vehicle manufacturer allow to be done on a vehicle? How many of these practice welds could fail? How many could cause corrosion? How bad could this get? How quickly can a shop’s reputation be destroyed by one technician in a shop? This is why we ask for test welds. And by asking for test welds, all technicians welding in the shop – not just one technician or a role rep – know what’s expected. Back to accountability. Remember, it isn’t just your reputation on the line. Your customers are betting their lives on these welds.

Eliminating the Bad » A test weld gives you the benefit of knowing that all your technicians know what they are and what they need to do. The test weld gets the bad out of the system. Many first welds or cold welds fail destructive testing. Why would any shop or technician want this weld anywhere on a vehicle? The test weld gives you, as a manager and owner, the confidence that your technicians know how to test and judge their own work, too. The little bit of time preparing and testing can help you avoid or reduce many comebacks for quality control or, in worst case scenarios, issues in a crash. This will also show that the shop followed the repair procedures required by vehicle manufacturers. During re-inspections, many times it’s the welds that cost a shop. When a weld is made, follow all

TECHNICAL » How Are Your Shop’s Welds? Conducting a Weld Test ere’s a basic example of how to do a test. The requirements and best procedures will be noted in automaker guidelines or are available from I-CAR. Examples and videos will be in “MY I-CAR” on I-CAR’s website if you’ve already taken tests. Have a technician complete a test weld on two pieces of metal being discarded from the vehicle. They need to be able to be clamped in a vise. Check for any voids or porosity. Also, check for the proper height and width of the weld. If any voids or “miss” are present, then try again. Look on the back for penetration results for butt joints with or without backing and lap or similar welds. Place in a vise and, using duck bill vise grips, move one piece back and forth until it breaks. Look at where the metal split. The weld should have torn metal out of the base material, not at the weld. For plug and spot welds, configure the metal so that it can be placed in a vise. Clamp down and peel one from the other in a downward motion. One will tear, leaving a nugget on the piece still in the vise. Measure the nugget to the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer’s specs. Again, this is basic, so for more information and a better definition of procedures and failures, visit www.i-car.com.

hat every paint manufacturer has in common is the quest to create a perfect color match. “Frankly, color match is our business – that’s what we sell,” says Harry Christman, marketing manager for Axalta Coating Systems. Meanwhile, this goal has expanded beyond color match in recent years with efforts to go “green” through R&D and product introductions featuring low-VOC solvent-based and waterborne systems that stand up to the National Rule. Change is scary, but technology is easing the pain. “Shops are concerned about getting a product that will provide the same color and [drying] speed they’re used to in order to stay productive,” says Louisa Meijer, global product manager at Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes. Compliance, conversion, cost – these factors roll around in shop owners’ heads when considering a switch from the National Rule to new low-VOC formulations that meet environmental mandates.

You purchase pliant,” Christman says. The regulations aren’t going anywhere. Today, the EPA- the product and substitute it for the National Rule formumandated level of VOCs allowed in paint products such lations you’ve been using. Meanwhile, waterborne has grown significantly more as a basecoat is 3.5 pounds per gallon. “There are many sophisticated since the first generation systems were introduced when California adopted Clean Air Act regulations. And, Meijer reminds, not all waterborne systems are created equal. “What they have in common is water [acting as a solvent],” she says. The good news for shop owners: There are lots of options if you want to “clean up” your paint operation – an array of low-VOC solvent-based and waterborne systems. BodyShop Business spoke with a range of paint suppliers to find out what makes these products work, what to consider when converting and what’s on the horizon as the industry continues to develop smarter, safer ways to generate that coveted perfect color match.
Manipulating Paint Behavior » If you ask Axalta, here’s a lesson on what not to do when formulating alternatives to National Rule products: “Don’t attempt to make waterborne behave like solvent-based paint,” Christman says. This maxim defines their approach and R&D efforts. Specifically, Christman is referring to the one and a half coat, wet-on-wet technology involved in the company’s waterborne paint system. “You don’t have to wait for one coat to dry before applying your next coat of paint,” he explains. “As soon as you’re done spraying the first coat, you can come back with your second, or ‘half coat.’ It’s a much faster way of painting and brings a lot of productivity to body shops.” But, Christman admits, the “painful” part about waterborne for some shops is change. Enter Axalta’s brand-new low-VOC solvent-based option that acts like what painters are accustomed to with traditional paint. “There is no Circle 72 for Reader Service
72

Circle 73 for Reader Service
SPECIAL LOW-VOC SECTION change in equipment or training required,” he says. The problem is, low-VOC solvent basecoats have had a reputation for poor color match. While trying to meet the 3.5 limit, there are fewer solvents available to manipulate the paint’s properties, so in some cases the quality, finish or color can suffer. Also, lowVOC solvent-based paint can dry too fast, creating problems with paint setting up too quickly or dry spray during application, mainly in hot environments. Axalta uses resins in combination with solvents to control the way its low-VOC paints behave, Christman says. “Resin is introduced into application binder (traditionally called the base maker) after you create the mixed color,” he says. “The application binder contains specific resins that are required by environmental conditions the painter is working in to create a paint that behaves like what the painter is used to, but you get there a totally different way than with traditional paint.” As for the future, Christman says “speed clears” providing high-gloss, fast-drying clearcoats are in development, as are UV curing paints using a new UV lamp Axalta introduced six months ago that works like a spray gun, emitting UV light and making primer ready to stand in 30 seconds.
Successful Conversion » Adapting to change is a real barrier to waterborne conversion, along with budgeting for equipment and infrastructural renovations to run a system: spray guns, spraybooths, blowers, etc. Not all shops have to start from scratch, but upgrades are generally required. All this change can overwhelm shop owners – and discourage them from going waterborne. It doesn’t have to be that way. “We take our customers to one of our six training centers in the U.S., and one in Canada, and we spend a full day reviewing the products and doing demos to show them how the products spray and perform so they can get some hands-on experience 74

through the conversion with them as they change over to waterborne products,” Meijer says. Seeing is believing with waterborne. When shop owners experience the paint process and crunch the numbers – we’re talking productivity – they have a hard time discounting waterborne as a viable option. Plus, pigments are cleaner, Meijer says. “You get the sharp colors that are on vehicles today in the marketplace,” she says. “That is the reason that many OEMs that are producing vehicles today are on waterborne systems – because the color and coverage is that much better compared to solvent-based.” More shops located in nonregulated states are moving to waterborne systems, Meijer says, crediting the cycle time for this switch. “Our HP Process with AIR-BAKE Technology allows a collision facility to go from prime to shine in 40 minutes or less,” she notes. “That is accomplished without turning on heat in the booth.”
Fewer Coats to Make a Match » With compliance top of mind among shop owners, switching to a low-VOC solvent-based product is a solution within reach, says Marcus Malnar, technical service supervisor for Transtar Autobody Technologies. “They don’t really have to change their processes,” he says.
Efficacy and Color Match » Transtar offers a no-mix product that does not require mechanical agitation, as most other basecoat systems do, Malnar says. “That is because of the resins we use with our binders,” he explains. “They keep the pigment evenly distributed throughout the toner.” That way, when spraying the basecoat, metallic flakes are easily “oriented,” which can mean avoiding that extra coat to get the finish to lay down correctly, Malnar says. “There are more choices for shop owners today when choosing a low-VOC solvent-based product, and the products are getting better,” he says. “Since
Circle 75 for Reader Service
SPECIAL LOW-VOC SECTION we’ve had more time to play with the exempt solvents that we have to work with, we’ve been able to come up with different combinations and more effective products.”
Color Match » Using the latest European toner technology provides color match, coverage and performance at Automotive Art Group, which can match more than 150,000 colors using 58 toners. The company offers a lowVOC solvent basecoat system that meets mandates in California, Canada and other regulated states, says Dereck Foster, executive chairman. “We are just about to launch our low-VOC HS Clear and Primer that will comply with regulations,” Foster says, noting that the company is now developing a waterborne color system it hopes to launch in early 2015. “The transition from regular solvent to low-VOC is very easy,” Foster says. “It’s just a different system.” Looking forward, future finishes will be more vibrant than those available today, Foster says. “They may even allow the car owner to change the color appearance of their car by simply turning a switch.”
Nanotechnology » The future of refinishes could lie in nanotechnology at BESA – Bernardo Ecenarro S.A., where R&D labs are focused on how nanotechnology can be applied to resins and additives. This technology could make paint products more resistant, says Amaia Mujika, marketing manager. Meanwhile, BESA brings Euro technology to the U.S. with products like its ultra high solids acrylic clearcoat for bi-coat systems. “This product is one of the most sold clears in Europe and one of the top products in our product range,” Mujika says. “The primers and clears BESA offers in Europe and the U.S. are different formulations based on legislation. The company is one of Europe’s key manufacturers, and products have been adapted to the Canada/U.S. legislation, but always maintaining the quality 76
June 2014 | BodyShop Business
standard of our entire product range.” BESA is working toward waterborne because, “in Europe, it seems that the trends are water-based products,” Mujika says. “In the U.S., we see that it’s possible to adapt solvent-based products to the current laws, and we’re working in this way,” she says. “If the legislation changes in the near future, becoming more restrictive, we’ll have to talk about water-based or UV technologies.”
Coverage » Before selecting a lowVOC solvent-based product, shops should carefully evaluate product coverage, says Gina Mahan, North American marketing manager for Valspar Automotive. “Make sure you test [the paint] and be sure that it works for your shop,” she advises. “Low-VOC solvent systems are NOT all equal. You must look at the coverage and total cost. The Valspar Low-VOC solvent-based system allows you more flexibility than most. Most basecoat colors cover in three coats, and the ease of application versus other solvent systems is unmatched. This system allows you to make both 3.5-VOC basecoat, but also 2.8-single stage colors all off the same rack.” Waterborne systems have evolved in recent years, and Valspar’s “true waterborne system” includes highcoverage toners, where R&D has been focused the last couple of years. “What makes our waterborne system different in the market is a non-agitation system, so products can be stored on a standard shelf and do not require a mix machine,” Mahan says. Adds Todd Everitt, Valspar Western Region technical manager, “A ‘true waterborne system’ is a latex-based paint line. Not all ‘water’ systems are the same. Water systems that require a mix machine to agitate the tints are solvent reduction water systems. The DeBeer 900 line requires no mixing machine for mixing. The high-strength pigment load allows colors to cover in two coats that can be applied in a wet-on-wet application. There’s no need for additional binders in the sys-
tem to aid in blending or color application versus a solvent reduction water system that requires additional steps of product applied to the vehicle to blend most colors. Our patented dispensing system is similar to a caulking gun in theory. This system decreases the amount of air that can be trapped in the tint and allows for more of the tint to be used as the sides of the can are wiped clean as the tint is dispensed.” Rolling out low-VOC products as an alternative to its National Rule paints is a priority. For example, Valspar introduced an air-dry clear that is available in National Rule and lowVOC versions, Mahan says. As for the future, shops will need to adapt to these new formulations. Regulations, Mahan says, “are here to stay.”
Beyond Exempt Solvents » There are a handful of “exempt solvents” that the EPA has deemed safer than their ozone-depleting cousins, which contribute to smog and must be limited to just 3.5 pounds per gallon in automotive paint products (in regulated states). “What makes the U.S. and Canada unique is that we are the only regions in the world that allow paint companies to utilize these exempt solvents to meet VOC requirements,” points out Tim Jones, PPG refinish collision waterborne segment manager. “In the rest of the world, exempt solvents are not allowed,” Jones emphasizes. “You must meet VOC requirements through higher solids or by using more water as your solvent in the system.” So when talking about future technologies, suppliers should take a global view of VOC-compliant products, Jones says. “It’s a much larger market than just the U.S. market that allows exempt products.” PPG waterborne systems use latex as the backbone, providing versatility and “usability,” Jones says. (Other manufacturers also use latex along with other additives, such as watersoluble resins.)
SPECIAL LOW-VOC SECTION Overall, low-VOC technology is evolving because suppliers are investing more in R&D to provide resins and additives that work well with waterborne basecoats, Jones says. “If you look back 10 years, there is a huge amount of change that has happened in our industry in terms of the amount of products that are available for companies like PPG to make [waterborne and low-VOC products].” For example, when PPG first introduced its waterborne system in 2007 to meet regulations in California and Canada, it was a basecoat system only. “Today, we have engineered ‘overs’ and ‘unders’ that work with waterborne basecoats to give you better performance characteristics, whether a better build on the primer, better adhesion and better gloss,” Jones says. PPG is heading in the direction of working toward a full, productionready waterborne system, Jones says. “That means waterborne primer, sealers, basecoats and clearcoats,” adding that this is a “lofty goal. Today, formulators only have ‘bits and pieces.’
Elevating Quality » Durability. Cost. Compliance. These issues are top of formulators’ minds, says James DeLuca, quality control manager and chemist at ChemSpec. If you’re driving around down south, you’ll see cars with faded, chipped and peeling clearcoats. DeLuca says that’s evidence of a “battle for cost” when creating low-VOC solventbased products. There’s a balance to strike between meeting VOC requirements while maintaining costs and ensuring quality. “If the cost [isn’t in line], then shops are not going to buy low-VOC products if they can still use National Rule,” DeLuca says. The thing is, achieving durability and gloss levels in a waterborne clearcoat is no easy feat. “You are putting water [as a solvent] into resins that can hydrolyze and break down durability,” DeLuca says, noting that ChemSpec products are “true waterborne” and not just “water reducible.” Waterborne is the long-term future, 78
June 2014 | BodyShop Business
but that will require a paradigm shift, DeLuca says. “We spend a lot of time training our customers and educating them on new waterborne systems and how to spray and how to color match and make adjustments, and once they get past the fear, they realize it’s a robust system,” he says. “It’s not like the old days of water.”
Low-VOC Comfort Zone » If shop owners can ease into a low-VOC system that “feels” like the National Rule they’ve always used, this option is appealing by nature. And that’s especially the case if compliance can be achieved without extra cost or capital investments (spraybooths and more). So offering a platform of low-VOC basecoats that act like the formulas painters know is a win, says Antony Modarressian, QAP director of technology at Quest Automotive Products. Matrix’s MPBLV Low VOC System is available in up to 200,000 color formulations, Modarressian points out. There are shops that succeed with waterborne and embrace the productivity and environmental improvement these systems offer. And there are others that recognize that they can meet regulations using the low-VOC solvent-based paint instead and prefer this option. Matrix’s MPBLV Low VOC System includes compliant binders and toners. “We are not trying to make a system work by adding a binder – in other paint systems, the toners are not true low-VOC. QAP/Matrix’s entire system is designed [to be lowVOC], and I think that is why painters I have seen in the field are having such success,” Modarressian says. This results in a sound and higher quality of finish because each toner is a true low-VOC. A painter will see no difference between using Matrix’s lowVOC formulas compared to National Rule versions, Modarressian says. As for the future, Modarressian says waterborne is the long-term solution, though low-VOC solvent-based formulas will be out there for some time. “Stricter VOC limits are starting to make their way throughout the country,
so while those rules can initially be achieved through low-VOC solventbased products, over time to be more responsible, [the industry] will start shifting toward more truly green technologies of waterborne and maybe other alternatives.”
Pushing Productivity » BASF was the first company to introduce a solvent-based, low-VOC product, says Mike Carroll, new products introduction manager. “It’s all about productivity,” he says, relating that this low-VOC solution is a bridge for shops wanting to comply or beat regulations. The high-solvent, solid-mixing clears allow for fast drying in any environment, Carroll says. “If it’s raining out, and you’re using a color that might not hide well, trying to get the water out of that is a big challenge in a waterborne event,” he says, relating that the low-VOC solvent products work like conventional solvent-borne basecoats. The ONYX Low-VOC Productive System does not require additional drying equipment to be used in the booth. In fact, the solvent-based low-VOC product might dry a bit too fast for some applications, such as a highmetallic job on a large truck. “We are limited in what reducers we can use [because of VOC regulations],” he explains, noting that waterborne systems are ideal for larger jobs, and allow shops to maintain productivity. As for the future, Carroll says, “It’s not only products, but also processrelated.” He’s referring to training and support to give paint technicians skills to pick a perfect color match and best use these new products on the market. Meanwhile, shops that want to convert to waterborne with the BASF system have the flexibility to spray solvent-based or waterborne products from one system. “[Onyx HD] puts the control back in paint technicians’ hands so they can perform the jobs they need to,” he says. Performance has a new address
SPOTLIGHT
THE SLOW ADVANCE OF CARBON FIBER Carbon fiber has been hanging at the foot of the automotive industry bed for a long time. Traditionally reserved for exotic sports cars, the first mass-produced cars making extensive use of carbon fiber have arrived.
F
irst it came to Formula 1, then to super cars and now BMW has become the first manufacturer to embrace the ultralight composite on a mass-produced series of models. The i3 city car became the first production model to use carbon fiber, with extensive use of the composite for the cockpit, body panels, roof, hood and seats. The BMW i8 sports car, coming out later this summer, will follow suit. And the new 7-series will also employ the composite extensively.
Speed
The bold move on behalf of BMW represents the first example of a mass-produced car using a carbon fiber cockpit, and one of the most extensive examples of carbon fiber
bodywork. There’s also word that Toyota and GM are working on carbon fiber options.
composite, consisting of interwoven carbon nano-fibers, may just be making its big breakthrough.
The ultralight composite is difficult to manufacture, and this has long been the prohibiting factor when it comes to its implementation. With more investment in manufacturing techniques, it has become substantially easier to produce carbon fiber inexpensively. New methods of molding and forging, combined with improved resin injection, are being developed across the globe. Carbon fiber may fall to just a third of its original price by the end of this year. With three times the tensile strength of steel and about a third the weight, the
Still, there are some who aren’t quite sold, including performance powerhouse Ferrari. About a year ago, the Maranello-based sports car manufacturer made clear its intentions to eschew the new composite in favor of what it saw as a better alternative – lightweight aluminum. And because carbon fiber is not practical or economical for use on certain chassis, suspension and unibody components, steel and aluminum will be kept around for many more years.
BMW’s new i8 sports car is one of the most carbon fiber intensive models marketed thus far. The passenger cell is made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and uses an aluminum frame for the gas engine and electric motor, the battery pack and the suspension. (Photo: BMW)
Despite the reservations of a few, it appears as though the carbon fiber march has picked up momentum. Now that the composite has attracted the attention of the mass production automotive giants of the world, many are interested in investing in the hightech material. Several top automakers are said to be ready to jump in to catch up with BMW’s lead. As the green revolution continues, carbon fiber will be at home with manufacturers striving to cut weight in the name of fuel efficiency and performance. The ultralight composite may even make its way into our daily drivers by the end of the decade.

Soft Strike – Rubber Dollie and Vinyl Hammer Covers Steck Manufacturing Company has released another winning tool: With many vehicles using aluminum now, including the new Ford-150 body being aluminum, using your everyday steel tools can cause galvanic corrosion on aluminum components. Many rubber dollies aren’t heavy enough to work effectively. Soft Strike Rubber Dollie Body Covers are made from Buna rubber for your steel heel dolly and hammer cover made from vinyl that allow you to easily transition from working on steel to aluminum without the worry of cross contamination and gal-
vanic corrosion. Reduce your investment in redundant body tools by applying our red rubber removable cover to the tools that you already own giving you the ability to work on aluminum with no worry of galvanic corrosion. The dolly cover also eliminates the problem of a rubber dolly not being heavy enough to work effectively by allowing you to simply add the cover to your existing steel dolly. See our new Soft Strike Rubber Dolly and Vinyl Hammer covers as well as our Soft Strike Rubber Spoon cover at NACE Booth 24016.
NACE Booth # 19033 It’s It’ ’s All Al About Aluminum! Ford Motor Company has revealed the all-new 2015 F-150 body is constructed entirely of High Strength Military Grade Aluminum Alloy Alloy.. Pro Spot is proud to have our aluminum repair products included in the Ford Collision Repair Program for the 2015 F-150. The SP Smart MIG Series (including the SP-1, SP-2 and SP-5 Smart MIG) as well as the SPR Rivet gun and the Aluminum W Weld Station are a few of the products that are approved for the Ford Collision Repair Program. Make sure to visit Pro Spot’ Spot’ss booth, #19033, next to the Ford booth.
