Continental rolls out Hybrid HD3 drive tire at MATS Continental Tire the Americas is displaying its latest drive tire, the Conti Hybrid HD3, which the tire maker said combines mileage, fuel efficiency and traction for long haul and regional traffic applications. “We listened when our customers told us they needed fuel efficiency when they are on the highway, and the durability and extended mileage when they’re on regional roads,” said brand and communications manager Alex Chmiel. “But it’s impossible to think that they can constantly change their tires, even when routes may switch from short to long hauls on a weekly or even daily basis. Our new Conti Hybrid HD3 addresses the needs of this evolving segment in order to provide the best of both worlds from one all-new truck tire.” The Conti Hybrid HD3 is Continental’s widest dual drive tire, at 248 mm, with 27/32nds tread depth in a new regenerating pattern that is cut in three dimensions. The combination of these characteristics and a large tread volume allows for long tread life, as well as a larger footprint that provides excellent traction when operated on highways, the company said, adding the tire’s tread geometry provides grip throughout the life of the product. When operated in long haul conditions, the tire reduces fuel consumption versus Continental’s traditional regional and mileage drive tires, according to the tire maker. With advanced tread cap compounding, a self-stabilizing

40,000-lb. tandem axle arrangement. Available this June, the EconoTrek combines the company’s newly upgraded Spicer S170 and S190 single-reduction single drive axles with the new, lightweight Spicer S20-045B tag axle. First introduced in 2004, Spicer S170 and S190 high-performance single drive axles have been outfitted on more than half a million commercial vehicles and are designed for efficiency while withstanding the most demanding applications. Now improved to ensure optimal operation and durability with less required maintenance, the Spicer S170 and S190 drive axles are even more resistant to abusive differential spin-out events, Dana said. The new Spicer S20-045B axle features advanced designs leveraged from Dana’s line of Spicer commercial vehicle drive axles. Made of high-strength, micro-alloy steel with a thin-wall, squareedge formed axle housing box, it weighs 20 to 30 lbs. less than competitive models. The S20-045B axle is shaped like a low-profile drive axle to provide significant strength for the axle’s vertical load-bearing capabilities, reducing tire wear while simplifying suspension and chassis installation at a lower weight. The Spicer EconoTrek tandem axle is optimized for use with electronic-controlled air suspension systems, such as the new Bendix eTrac system, which will seamlessly transfer weight to the Spicer S170 or S190 series drive axle for improved low-speed traction when combined with the Spicer patented wheel-differential lock feature. ZF offers TraXon, a modular transmission system ZF introduced its new automatic transmission system for heavy trucks at MATS. According to the company, with a completely new basic transmission and a modular concept, TraXon meets the demand of the commercial vehicle market for a versatile solution for a broad range of applications. The innovative transmission combines several contradictions at the same time: it offers more torque without compromising the power-to-weight ratio; it has a higher gear spread while the noise quality was improved; and, depending on the application, it can not only be driven by a dry clutch, but also by a hybrid module, dual-clutch module, or a torque converter clutch. Furthermore, it can be combined with an enginedependent PTO. For the new transmission, ZF said it developed the PreVision GPS shifting strategy, which works in an anticipatory and especially fuel-saving way thanks to a GPS connection and an interface to navigation data. With the TraXon and a vast number of innovations at the transmission hardware and the control software, ZF sets new standards and enables an enormous functional diversity in the commercial vehicle transmission. “With the TraXon, we aim at sustainability,” said Rolf Lutz, member of the board of management responsible for the Commercial Vehicle Technology division. “The development for the current market launch focused on a further increase of economy and customer benefit, as well as the suitability for a range of applications which is as broad as possible.” ZF www.zf.com Booth #32555

According to Spectra Premium, late-model trucks are much more demanding on the cooling system. They operate at higher temperatures and pressures, requiring a more robust Charge Air Cooler. Traditional Tube and Fin CAC is a standard design for most OE units, and is designed to fit the manufacturer’s cooling requirements. On heavier applications, premature failures such as tube to header leaks sometimes have been observed. The Bar and Plate design is usually a better option for newer trucks, as it can withstand superior heat variations, the company notes. The bar and plate consists of fins pressed between aluminum sheets and fitted with a header and face bar. This stacking is brazed together, creating a single solid piece in allowing the tanks to be welded directly to the core. The heavy gauge side bars and end caps are the reason behind this design’s strength and longevity. This stronger and more robust design will contribute in reducing costs associated with warranty returns and replacements, according to the maker. New for MATS are Spectra Freightliner Cascadia Series Radiators, which feature: • All-aluminum design • Heavy gauge tubes for superior overall strength • Redesigned mounting brackets for durability Spectra Premium www.spectrapremium.com Booth: #62144

We were number one in Class 6 through 8, in school bus, in recreational vehicles, step vans and remanufacturing,” said Daum. “And we go into 2013 with a tremendous head start with market share of 42.2% to 44.2% in Class 8, up 11% from last year. We don’t expect to sustain that, but we do expect it to be better than 2012. We are driving success farther and faster than anyone else in the industry. I could give you a number for 2013, but two things are sure: one is the number will be wrong and two, it will be higher or lower. “Daimler is committed to innovation, and we will leverage our global scale and combine with local market and heritage to maintain our market advantage.” Daum said the announcement of layoffs made earlier this year was merely a reflection of the agreement with DTNA’s unions, which requires several months of advance notice of any potential layoffs. He indicated that this was purely a precautionary measure, and given the strength of the market, especially in the second half of the year, no such action would be needed. Alcoa celebrates 125 years – Continued from the cover the past 10 years to contribute to this savings, including Dura-Bright, LvL ON, Wheel Torque Solutions and its most recent advancement— new wide base wheels. Alcoa’s 14-in. wide base aluminum wheels are not only the lightest on the market, weighing just 58 lbs. per wheel, but they also offer enhanced image, as well as solutions to achieving sustainability goals. Simply switching dual steel 22.5-in. wheels and tires to 14-in. wide base Alcoa aluminum wheels and tires reduces the weight of an 18-wheeler by nearly 1,400 lbs. The upgrade takes advantage of this significant weight reduction coupled with the increased savings from lower resistance wide base tires to further improve fuel efficiency. Alcoa wheels’ strength, durability and low weight deliver environmental advantages to complement their financial benefits, the maker said. With larger payloads due to the weight savings, trips are reduced, and, since Alcoa wheels are infinitely recyclable, they’ll never see a landfill. First, Alcoa invented the aluminum industry, then the forged aluminum wheel. Over the years it has launched countless innovations, and when it comes to aluminum technology, Alcoa said it is not only the leader, but the foremost expert. Alcoa said it is hard at work at bringing new innovations to further increase fuel efficiency, payload, enhanced appearance and ease of maintenance—“You won’t believe what’s coming next,” the company hinted. Alcoa added its number one priority is to design, engineer and manufacture unique wheel products, finish options and other advancements that its customers prefer. BetterTrucker.com adds Super-Skirt System BetterTrucker.com, an online marketplace for truckers and trucking companies, is introducing its new SuperSkirt System, which the company said is a next-generation trailer side skirt with new technologies never before seen in the industry. The Super-Skirt System’s modular design features 2-ft. panels that interlock with each other for quick and easy installation, providing limitless possibilities for various trailer lengths, the maker said. The second innovative feature is the elimination of cross-member braces under the trailer body, which is possible because of the built-in stanchion support structures that secure every panel onto the trailer i-beams with two galvanized J-bolts. In addition, the Super-Skirt System’s rigid dimensional shape reduces surface drag and prevents wind from slipping under the trailer, while strategic placement of aft-facing safety reflectors out of the slipstream creates additional visibility and safety for passing vehicles, the company added. Invented by Brian Kronemeyer, the product is on display at the BetterTrucker.com booth at MATS. With a price point of less than $1,000 and the 6% rating in less fuel consumption, the Super-Skirt System offers a full return on investment within three months, the company said. Prime places order for ATDynamics TrailerTail trapped; and the belt’s “banner” edge, or flange, along both outside edges fit snugly against the belt flange to help prevent product leakage or buildup. A spring-loaded belt scraper on the underside of the back end of the belt scrapes the belt clean, reducing carry back of product under the trailer. Also available as an option is a second spring-loaded scraper, located under the front of the trailer, that is designed to clean the belt and prevent carry back of environmental debris into the hopper. According to Trail King, the ASHR-C is the only ag trailer to provide a “sweep seal” on its top-hinged hydraulic tailgate. Because the hopper is extended almost a full 12 in. beyond the tailgate, the tailgate swings inside the hopper walls to close, “sweeping” the rubber seals into position to conform perfectly to the hopper shape. The floor is controlled by an on/off valve, so the tailgate and other trailer components are less likely to be damaged by the operator inadvertently engaging the floor and moving the load before the tailgate is open, the maker said. The trailer also features Z-bar cross members and a heavy-duty roller chain design, reducing friction and putting less demand on other components for less maintenance. The ASHR-C trailer is available in a variety of models, ranging in capacities from 55 to 105 cubic yards and overall lengths of 43- to 53ft. One of the nation’s largest refrigerated carriers, Prime Inc., is installing the ATDynamics TrailerTail trailer rear aerodynamic device on all new trailers purchased in 2013. This will be a minimum of 450 trailers for the year. The decision was made after extensive fuel economy and durability testing. With a large percentage of the Prime fleet comprised of owneroperators who pay for their own fuel, ATDyamics president Andrew Smith said these independent truckers will directly benefit from Prime’s investment in fuel efficiency. “Many fleets that use owner-operators to pull the freight resist in investing in fuel-efficient trailer equipment or do the minimum to comply with regulation,” said Paul Higgins, Prime’s director of maintenance. “We believe that maximizing the fuel efficiency of our trailer fleet is in the long-term best interest of our drivers, the environment and the company’s bottom line.” ATDynamics’ Smith estimates that the improvement in the aerodynamics of the tractor/trailer combination will amount to 3 cents a mile, or a 7% increase in an owner-operator’s net income. As well as the fuel savings, ATDynamics claims of the TrailerTail has been shown to improve stability and provide additional safety from the additional 60 in. in length to the rear of the trailer. Smith said ATDynamics is in negotiations for a further order that could include Prime’s existing 7,000 trailers. ATDynamics www.atdynamics.com Booth: #12048

Volvo I-Shift – Continued from page 4 featuring the Volvo I-Shift. Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American sales and marketing, made the announcement Thursday at MATS. “Introducing I-Shift as standard across our product lineup is an exciting development that reflects our confidence in its performance and the value it provides to our customers and their operations,” Nyberg said. “The Volvo I-Shift is a tremendous tool to help combat rising fuel costs and improve driver productivity and safety. IShift is also proven to help attract, train and retain drivers.” Since its introduction in 2001, Volvo has sold more than 330,000 I-Shifts globally, and the manufacturer is currently building more than 80% of trucks globally with the I-Shift. Market share of the I-Shift has steadily grown since 2007, when Volvo became the first OEM to bring an integrated AMT to the North American market. In 2012, nearly 60% of Volvo-powered vehicles built also featured an I-Shift. Volvo was the first to offer multiple premium packages with the IShift, and the first to introduce innovative technologies like load and grade sensors, skip shifting and Eco-Roll. The 12-speed Volvo I-Shift is able to downshift and upshift in smaller, optimum steps—averages 28%—between gears compared with competitive transmissions, which average 37% steps between gears. This improves drivability and skip shifting. Integrated sensors identify truck load and road grade to place the truck in the right gear for the conditions for smooth, optimum shifts, extending clutch life and service intervals. I-Shift also reduces wasted revs and boosts fuel efficiency by up to 1.56% when compared to an unproductive driver. I-Shift is a central component to Volvo’s XE—exceptional efficiency—powertrain package, which further reduces fuel consumption by lowering engine RPM at a given vehicle speed, a concept Volvo calls “downspeeding.” Volvo’s XE packages downspeed the engine at cruising speeds by 200 RPM or more than traditional specs, so trucks spec’d with XE13 cruise at just 1,150 RPM at 65 MPH, while the XE16 powertrain package can cruise as low as 1,100 RPM at 65 MPH. Mack Twin Y & mRIDE – Continued from page 4 available on the Mack Pinnacle axle back and axle forward models, the Mack Twin Y features Mack S38 and S40 series axles with C125/126, C150/151 and 200 Series carriers. The Mack mRide spring suspension, now offered with Mack axles, is ideal for vocational customers demanding a durable, stable ride with greater articulation. Paired with the Mack C150/151 series axle carriers, the spring suspension is available on the Mack Granite, Titan by Mack, Mack Pinnacle axle forward and the Mack TerraPro model trucks. The design of the Mack Twin Y air suspension includes two stamped high-strength steel Yshaped blades per wheel end. Clamping the axle with both upper and lower axle seats, the Twin Y blades greatly reduce suspension windup and significantly improve tire traction and braking control, as well as increase tire life by up to 25%. The axle seats are clamped to the axle housing by Huck U-bolts on both sides and never need to be re-torqued. Bushings in the upper and lower axle seats offer greater roll control and deliver easier handling with a more comfortable ride. The Twin Y’s lighter weight and reduced torque reactivity mean less maintenance and extended tire and component life, which also significantly improves customer ROI. The Twin Y’s design means the load on the suspension is entirely on the air ride and not on the pivot bushing. The use of spring leafs over four separate rubber block packs on the mRide provides stability and articulation, while also allowing the needed clearance for larger tires and brake components required in construction and vocational applications. In addition to being lighter than other spring suspensions, the mRide delivers a smoother ride, improved stability and greater ground clearance over difficult terrain. It provides constant ground contact for all wheels over its articulation range, which in turn maximizes traction on any jobsite. The parallel pinion angles of the Mack axles extend the driveline joint life. Coupled with the greaseless mRide suspension, the offering boasts easier maintenance and is easier to align, contributing to reduced customer maintenance costs.
