2012 Goodyear North America Highway Hero Award winner Jason Harte (right), with Gary Medalis, director of marketing, Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems.

A truck driver who rescued a family of six from a smashed minivan has been named the 30th Goodyear North America Highway Hero. Chosen from four finalists, Jason Harte of Rogers, Ark., accepted the award at MATS. Harte, who works for Missoula, Mont.-based Sammons Trucking, was driving down an interstate last July when he saw a speeding pickup truck push a minivan off the road and slam into another car, pushing it to the highway median. Bystanders helped the car’s driver while Harte approached the van. He saw a man and woman holding a six-month-old baby. They were frantically trying to get out of the vehicle. Harte also noticed that three other children were trapped inside the van. He dialed 911, helped the man, woman and baby out of the van, and then rescued the most accessible of the three other children. Continues on page 32

Conti rolls out new hybrid drive tires A new segment in commercial truck operations, combining long haul with regional traffic, is the force behind the launch of Continental Tire the Americas’ latest drive tire, the tire maker said. Offering the drive tire trifecta of mileage, fuel efficiency and traction, the all-new Conti Hybrid HD3 is on display this week for the first time at MATS. Advances in Continental engineering have combined to create a tire with exceptional mileage, the company said. The Conti Hybrid HD3 is now Continental’s widest dual drive tire, at 248 mm, with 27/32nds tread depth in a new regenerating pattern that is cut in three dimensions. The combination of these characteristics and a large tread volume allows for long tread life, as well as a larger footprint that provides excellent traction when operated on highways. The traction requirements for regional traffic, which often include changing weather conditions and curved roads, also have been addressed via the Conti Hybrid HD3’s tread geometry to provide grip throughout the life of the product. The three-dimensional lateral sipes and a directional tread pattern provide more gripping edges on the road surface than a traditional drive tire, the company said, adding that when operated in long haul conditions, the tire reduces fuel consumption versus Continental’s traditional regional and mileage drive tires. With advanced tread cap compounding, a self-stabilizing rib-block pattern and minimized tread deformation from a stiff shoulder, drivers can expect more than 10% improvement in rolling resistance against Continental’s HDR2 and HDL2 DL. Hendrickson’s shockless air suspension – Continued from page 4

“We are excited and proud to unveil this one-of-a-kind technology that makes ‘shockless’ air suspension systems a reality,” said Fulton. Available on select Vantraax integrated air slider models, ZMD technology provides reduced maintenance by eliminating the shock absorbers. Robust chain down-stops replace the rebound limiter function traditionally performed by the shock absorber. In addition to reducing the risks associated with roadside inspections and CSA violations, these heavy-duty downstops provide maximum durability, which translates to maintenance savings over the life of the trailer. Moreover, the robust down-stops provide reliable protection for trailers being loaded onto rail freight cars. An additional benefit of Zero-Maintenance Damping air springs is enhanced ride quality. ZMD air springs integrate the damping function traditionally performed by the shock within the air spring itself by exchanging pressurized air through channels interconnecting the bellows and piston of this patent-pending air spring. Unlike a shock absorber, where damping capacity is finite and deteriorates with age, ZMD air springs provide continuous damping at a consistent rate over the life of the air spring, increasing trailer component life. Hendrickson said its state-ofthe-art research and development testing, combined with real-world road conditions, has shown that ZMD achieves what the company calls superior suspension damping, which translates to unmatched ride quality, driver comfort and cargo protection. WABCO said its ECAS is an enabler technology that supports fleets to transition from 6x4 to 6x2 configurations by significantly improving the traction performance of 6x2 trucks on low friction surfaces and by reducing tire wear through its “intelligent load transfer” functionality. An independent report published by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) in November 2010 confirmed that a 6x2 truck configuration increases fuel economy up to 6% and achieves weight savings up to 400 lbs. The company added its latest ECAS technology also delivers optimal ride performance together with additional innovative features, such as lift axle control, speed-activated driveline protection and weight transfer over-

load protection. WABCO said its ABS with integrated ESCsmart marks the first time within the commercial vehicle industry that these two vehicle safety technologies have been integrated for hydraulic brake applications on medium-duty trucks and buses. ABS with integrated ESC for hydraulic applications improves the vehicle’s directional stability and helps protect against roll-over, skidding and spin-out

Optronics introduces new LED clearance/ marker lamp on Vanguard Trailers Optronics International, a manufacturer and supplier of heavy-duty LED vehicle lighting, is displaying its new Uni-Lite LED clearance/marker lamps at MATS. The lamps appear on trailers at the Vanguard National Trailer Corp. booth #34315. The small, threequarter-inch lamps employ Optronics’ new GloLight optics, making them appear deceptively bright for their size. The Vanguard trailers are the first of their kind to be fully outfitted with the small clearance/marker lamps and 4-in. round stop/tail/turn employing Optronics’ patent-pending GloLight optical diffusion technology. Most LED lamps have hotspots or patterns of bright light that make up their common visual signature. GloLight lamps are visually distinctive from other LED lamps because their lenses disperse light waves in a unique way that gives them a smooth, brightly glowing appearance, according to the company. “The GloLight optical technology is so different, it’s patentable,” said Marcus Hester, director of sales and marketing for Optronics International. “The new version of our Uni-Lite represents just one of 35 new GloLight products Optronics has in its pipeline.” The new Uni-Lite clearance/marker lamps come in red and amber. The red Uni-Lite lamps are designed with dual-function capabilities for applications such as high-mount stop and turn. The lamps are available in P2and PC-rated versions, enabling them to meet the photometric requirements for a full range of applications. Optronics International www.optronicsinc.com Booth: #34315

Fuel-efficient Zenvironment on display at MATS Yokohama Tire Corp.’s full line of Zenvironment tires are on display in booth #14124 at MATS. The highly fuelefficient, low rolling resistance Zenvironment lineup includes the 703ZL, 103ZR, 501ZA and 101ZL. Within the casing design, Yokohama uses “finite element analysis” where engineers divide the tire into several thousand tiny individual sections or elements. Each element is analyzed under simulated operating conditions, which allows Yokohama to accurately predict physical changes the tire will undergo during its lifetime. By being able to predict these changes, the tire maker said it can reduce the strain to the casing from normal stress or applied force. The result is cooler operating temperatures and greater casing life and retreadability, the company said. Yokohama Tire Corp. www.yokohamatire.com Booth #14124

HDMA breakfast – Continued from page 2 When it comes to truck purchasing and the economics of the trucking business, Clarke suggested that we may have entered the “new normal,” pointing out fleets are competing these days with more affordable intermodal options and ships that are arriving at more ports closer to their destinations. One of the changes resulting from this is a 50% drop in Class 6-7 truck buys. Those smaller loads are now being carried either by Class 4-5 trucks delivering locally or consolidate loads on baby 8s. “With all these changes,” said Clarke, “I remain optimistic about the future—every delivery needs trucks.”

Bridgestone Firestone new tires – Continued from page 1 water to increase road grip, while the tire’s optimized bead design and proprietary sidewall compound lowers rolling resistance and improves fuel efficiency throughout the lifecycle of the casing, Bridgestone said. The FT491 all-position radial features Ulti-Rib and Defense Groove designs to combat the initiation and spread of irregular wear. Sidewall protector ribs help protect the casing from curbing damage and abrasion, and wider tread distributes footprint pressure to promote long, smooth wear. The FS820 all-position radial tire is designed for steer, drive and trailer positions for on- and off-highway service. The tire features rugged five-rib design to combat stone retention for longer mileage and retreadability and an all-steel casing construction and cap/base compounding to help resist cuts and improve durability and retreadability, Bridgestone said. Hadley’s SmartValue – Continued from page 1 Dubsky. “We are confident that this cost-effective, integrated system will be quickly adopted by the mainstream Class 8 markets, because SmartValve’s wide-ranging benefits are tailored specifically to them.” SmartValve installed on the drive axle suspension saves time and money in a variety of common drop-and-hook situations, getting drivers back on the road quickly. By conveniently raising the tractor frame over ride height, drivers can reduce the time and effort required in coupling with trailers at many different ride heights. There is no need to crank the landing gear as often or as far, and fewer trips out of the cab are required for adjustment. Hadley www.hadleyadvantage.com Booth: #34250

Cat Scale launches timesaving smartphone app Truck-weighing data provider Cat Scale is developing a smartphone app, for launch in June, that has the potential to save truck drivers an hour or more each time they check-weigh the load on a truck’s axles before heading out on the highway. Launched at www.weighmytruck.com, the app streamlines the weighing the process, allowing the entire transaction to be complete from the truck cab. For drivers that need hard copy, they can go to the fuel desk and get the printed weight report. For 90% of drivers, though, this is not necessary, according to Cat Scale. For many drivers, a check-weigh is an essential preliminary to setting out on a trip across country, ensuring that the tractor-trailer combination is legal on all axle groups. At the scale, a driver simply needs to access the app on the phone, and the GPS in the smartphone recognizes the scale. The weighmaster is notified there’s a truck waiting for a check-weigh and the transaction proceeds. As soon as the weight is recorded, the driver has the option of going forward or stopping to get the printed document. It also can be e-mailed to dispatch or a fleet manager, according to e-mails established during the sign-up process. CAT Scale Co. www.catscale.com Booth #36020
