Alcoa has rolled out the world’s lightest heavy-duty truck wheel. This latest Alcoa innovation, the Ultra ONE, will help trucks shed pounds for increased payload and fuel efficiency. Alcoa’s new 40-lb. wheel is 47% lighter than steel wheels of the same size. The Ultra ONE can help save up to 1,400 lbs. per rig, enabling fleets to carry more goods while meeting stringent federal emissions regulations. “Alcoa continues to reinvent the wheel. The Ultra1 wheel is truly 40 lbs. of pure muscle,” said Tim Myers, president of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products. To take out five pounds out of its lightest heavy-duty truck wheel, Alcoa’s experts at the Alcoa Technical Center invented a new alloy, the patent-pending MagnaForce alloy. The Ultra ONE Wheel with MagnaForce alloy is available in the industry standard 22.5 in. x 8.25 in. size for heavy-duty, commercial transportation, and is being readied in all OEM customer data books. Truck manufacturers can specify Ultra ONE using the product code ULTRAx. Ultra ONE wheels are available in all Alcoa finish options. Booth #32385 www.alcoawheels.com

Volvo engines provide fuel efficiency Volvo Trucks announced its Greenhouse Gas 2014- certified engines are providing greater fuel efficiency than anticipated. The integrated engines are delivering up to a 3% fuel efficiency improvement compared with their 2013 counterparts. “We remain focused on ensuring that the ongoing phases of engine and vehicle regulations do not burden our customers, but instead create value for their operations,” said Göran Nyberg, president, Volvo Trucks North American sales & marketing. A combination of in-lab and on-road testing proved that the initially announced fuel efficiency figures of up to 2% understated the true fuel savings and value of 2014 Volvo engines. Refinements and design changes contributing to fuel efficiency improvements in Volvo’s 2014 D11, D13 and D16 engines include: Low-friction cylinder improvements, including a redesigned piston, liner and oil scraper ring developed with smoother surfaces; A clutched air compressor, which reduces engine load by completely disengaging the clutch from the engine when not in use; Advanced combustion technology of a new seven-hole injector, which offers better fuel atomization for a more even distribution of fuel within the cylinder, maximizing fuel efficiency and offering a greater savings for customers; and An improved crankcase ventilation system, which filters more oil from blow by gases before they leave the engine and at the same time improves

engine backpressure for better performance. Along with fuel efficiency improvements, a two-piece valve cover on the D13 engine improves serviceability, which reduces repair time and is easier to handle than previous covers. Volvo also removed lead from the valvetrain of its 2014 engines to reduce its environmental impact. In addition Volvo Trucks’ XE powertrain package boosts fuel efficiency by up to an additional 3%. Available on Volvo VNM and VNL models equipped with 2014 Volvo engines, the XE11, XE13 and XE16 packages improve fuel efficiency by lowering engine RPM at a given vehicle speed, a concept Volvo calls “downspeeding.” Fuel efficiency improves by about 1.5% for every 100 RPM of downspeeding, so customers spec’ing the XE package can expect up to a 3% improvement when compared with another overdrive transmission in a similar operation. Yokohama Tire Corp.’s booth display shows off new tires Yokohama Tire Corp. (YTC) rolled out a trio of new commercial tires. The 902L and 709L ultra wide base drive tires will be on display in YTC’s booth and a new coach/bus tire, the 104ZR Spec-2, will be unveiled. “The theme of our MATS booth is ‘Defining the Future,’” said Rick Phillips, Yokohama senior director, commercial and OTR sales. “New products like the ones we have at MATS will play a big part in our future, especially with the October 2015 opening of our new commercial tire plant in Mississippi.” Ultra wide base (UWB) tires such as the 902L and 709L are part of YTC’s long-term plan, according to Phillips. “We’re seeing more of a demand for them because of the weight savings, which is where fleets can find an immediate benefit. It’s something tangible they can measure and calculate savings,” he said. “The 902L long-haul/regional ultra wide base drive tire delivers superior traction and high mileage,” said Phillips. “Its tread design

12 Friday, March 28, 2014

makes a real difference in extreme driving conditions, such as in snow and ice.” The 902L comes in size 445/50R22.5. Highlights include: A 27/32 tread depth that creates higher traction while providing extralong treadlife; an advanced rubber compound that lowers rolling resistance and reduces heat build-up, which boosts fuel economy; seven circumferential grooves that enhance lateral stability and create long wear with an even footprint; a zero-degree mid belt that provides weight distribution for even pressure and increased treadlife; and a specially-engineered small block and sipe combo that reduces heeltoe wear, increases fuel economy and provides high snow traction. “Yokohama introduced the 709L at MATS and it will be available at the end of the year in size 445/50R22.5,” Phillips said. “It’s built for long wear and fuel efficiency, thanks to its advanced rubber compound. Plus, its special casing enhances durability for retreading.”

Mid-America Trucking Show Daily

The 709L on-highway ultra wide base drive tire features: Seven serpentine grooves that reduce tread movement, add rigidity and decrease rolling resistance; Double Z blocks that increase rigidity to prevent heel-toe wear for a long, even-lasting tire life while increasing wet and snow traction; a 24/32 tread depth that decreases tread block movement for stability, low rolling resistance and increased fuel efficiency; and a zero-degree mid belt that provides even pressure and weight distribution for increased treadlife and an even footprint. Phillips described the new 315/80R22.5 104ZR Spec-2 as “a workhorse that delivers longer treadwear, low rolling resistance and enhanced traction, making it ideal for coach and regional/long haul tour bus applications.” Booth #14124 www.yokohamatire.com

Spectra Premium introduces 13 new heavy-duty truck radiators Spectra Premium releases 13 new radiators for heavy-duty trucks, covering popular Freightliner, International and Kenworth trucks, as well as Bluebird/Carpenter buses. The coverage also extends to late-model trucks such as the 2013 Freightliner Cascadia Series. In addition to being engineered, developed and validated in the company’s Canadian facilities, these 13 aluminum radiators are also manufactured in its Laval plant in Quebec. This ensures a stringent quality control process from development to production. Certain design improvements were performed such as the redesigning of the OE mounting structures allowing a thermal expansion in the Spectra Premium radiator, which will eliminate tubeto-header leaks. All radiators are fit tested on the very same trucks they are developed for to ensure a perfect fit and utilize a brazed seam over gaskets in plastic-aluminum radiators for a more robust solution. Radiators also undergo rigorous product validation including thermal cycling tests to simulate thermal expansion and real-time operating conditions to meet rigorous demands of the North American trucking industry. Ford puts 2015 F-Series Super Duty

to the test Ford’s F-Series Super Duty offers engine and chassis upgrades for 2015 that together deliver best-in-class horsepower, torque and towing capacity, according to the company. Ford’s second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel now boasts 440 HP, up from 400 HP, and 860 lb.-ft. of torque, up from 800 lb.-ft., across all Super Duty models from F-250 to F-450. The 2015 F-450 tops the F-Series Super Duty pickup truck lineup with maximum towing capacity increasing to a class-leading 31,200 lbs., a gain of 6,500 lbs. The truck’s gross combined weight rating increases to a class-leading 40,000 lbs., a gain of 7,000 lbs. F-350 increases maximum towing capacity as well, to 26,500 lbs., from 23,200 lbs., and the gross combined weight rating goes up 5,000 to 35,000 lbs. The improved ratings are a result of designing and engineering the truck as an integrated system. The approach enabled Ford engineers to optimize performance across the full Super Duty lineup. “Our chassis people work in unison with our

powertrain people to develop more than a great truck, it’s a machine engineered for work,” said Doug Scott, Ford Truck group marketing manager. “Our chassis people have worked in unison with our powertrain people to develop more than a great truck—it’s a machine engineered for work.” The 2015 Super Duty achieves best-in-class towing performance with a second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine that was further developed to provide more power, torque and efficiency. “The 6.7-liter Power Stroke was already a stout engine,” said Robert Fascetti, Ford vice president powertrain engineering. “The improvements we’ve made essentially give Super Duty customers an engine designed for our larger F-650

and F-750 trucks. They may not realize how tough this engine really is.” The F-350 is available with a high-capacity towing package that includes new front springs and a wide track axle, increasing the gross combined weight rating with the 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine from 31,900 to 35,000 lbs. Improvements to the F-450 that allow it to handle the increased tow rating include commercialgrade 19.5-in. wheels and tires; upgraded rear Ujoints and suspension components, including new rear leaf springs; front and rear stabilizer bars; and shocks. The steering system has stronger gears and linkages and the fifthwheel/gooseneck has an increased towing capacity. Booth #32045 www.commtruck.ford.com

Detroit showcases innovative solutions Detroit Diesel Corp. (Detroit) is showcasing its most innovative solutions, which includes the Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission, Detroit axles, Detroit engines, and the newest addition to the family—Detroit Connect. Available in the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution and part of the Detroit product offering, the DT12 combines the operational ease of an automatic with the efficiency of a manual transmission, resulting in enhanced fuel economy, vehicle performance and safety. Shearing noted that customers have committed to the DT12 because of innovative features such as creep mode, which modulates the clutch to improve low-speed maneuverability, making backing up to a loading dock or maneuvering through tight city traffic easier. Skip Shift, which automatically skips gears, enables the transmission to run through lower gears faster to achieve cruising speed sooner. Another feature that has accelerated the acceptance of the DT12 is the shifter—with easy access to all the features (i.e. Jake Brake, Forward, Reverse, etc.) a driver needs. The DT12 delivers what fleets and drivers are looking for, simplicity. The DT12 comes standard with a 5-year/750,000-mile warranty, and a 3-year/350,000mile warranty on the clutch. The Detroit Customer Service network provides immediate access to maintenance information, and with hundreds of authorized locations in the U.S. and Canada, factory-trained technicians are always available. Show attendees also see a detailed cutaway of the DT12 showcasing the single countershaft, and helical cut gears. There will also be detailed cutaways of the DD15 engine with the proprietary asymmetric turbo and tandem axle with precision cut gears.

Heil Trailer announces stainless steel technology

For 2014, Heil Trailer launches into the stainless steel segment with a line of general chemical tank trailers that are built with an enhanced focus on quality and performance, similar to the standards of excellence applied to the company’s aluminum tank trailers. The new stainless steel technology provides state-of-the-art, customdeveloped, ultra-high-definition laser cutting for a tighter barrel fit-up and size-optimized, laser-welded barrel joints that ensure little to no grinding or post-processing after fit-up, which creates ultra-clean interiors and maximizes durability, regardless of the product. A proprietary heat panel design on the new products outperforms current dimple panel designs and channel heat designs. In the near future, the new stainless steel technology will offer up to 3-A sanitary compliance, the highest of sanitary standards for critical food grade and other material requirements. Heil Trailer also introduced larger capacities to its dry bulk portfolio, allowing customers more options when it comes to the type of commodities they transport. The ultra-cleanable 1611 trailer, a unique dry bulk trailer, will be introduced for the food grade industry. Booth #16252 www.heiltrailer.com

Dana’s new Spicer E-Series steer axles on display Dana Holding Corp. introduced additions to the company’s family of Spicer E-Series steer axles that deliver best-in-class performance and durability with up to 35 lbs. less weight. Available in the first half of 2015, these steer axles feature a steel-forged beam design that reduces axle weight while still delivering the strength and torsional stiffness needed for superior vehicle braking response. The axles are targeted for on-highway, city delivery and bus chassis applications with gross axle weight ratings from 10,000 to 13,200 lbs. This new steer axle system is the latest in a lineup of robust Spicer technologies that reduce weight and improve vehicle performance, enabling original-equipment manufacturers to offset the added weight associated with important technologies such as new fuel-efficient engines, diesel particulate filters and urea injection systems. The benefits of the new Spicer ESeries Steer enable OEMs to further maximize chassis weight distribution and may also allow fleets to forego the higher rated, more expensive tires
