A glimpse into the future
of trucking Visitors to Great Dane’s booth (#34075) at the 2014 Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) will be among the first to explore the Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience, the latest in tractor and trailer technology. The project is the result of a multi-year collaboration between a team of vendor partners including Walmart, Peterbilt, Great Dane and Capstone Turbine. Almost every component on this vehicle is cutting edge and showcases innovations of the future that will drive increased efficiencies. The vehicle’s tractor, built by Peterbilt, includes advanced aerodynamics; a Capstone prototype advanced turbine-powered rangeextending series hybrid powertrain, combined with an electric motor and battery storage system; a sliding driver’s door; a centered driver’s seat; electronic dashboard with customizable gauges and performance data; and a comfortable full-size sleeper. The vehicle’s trailer, manufactured by Great Dane, offers a host of fuel-saving features. The trailer body is built almost exclusively with carbon fiber, including one-piece carbon fiber panels for roof and sidewalls, saving nearly 4000 lbs. compared to traditional designs. The trailer’s convex nose also enhances aerodynamics while maintaining storage space inside the trailer. Walmart’s U.S. trucks log millions of miles every year, so when it comes to sustainability and fleet efficiency its goal is simple: Deliver more while driving fewer miles on efficient equipment. It’s the driving principle behind the company’s commitment to double fleet efficiency by 2015. Booth #34075 www.greatdanetrailers.com

Peterbilt celebrates 75 years with new innovations During the media day at the MidAmerican Trucking show, Peterbilt Motors Co. announced a new optimized drivetrain package for its already fuel-efficient leader, the aerodynamic Model 579, bringing even greater levels of fuel economy. Called APEX, the new spec option pairs the PACCAR MX-13 Engine with the Fuller Advantage Automated Transmission. The Darrin Siver, Peterbilt GM combination features optimized shift calibration, weight savings and proprietary control logic between the two components. APEX, available now, can result in up to a 4% improvement in fuel efficiency versus previous drivetrains, the company said. Superior fuel economy is achieved through the precise fuel management resulting from proprietary communication technology. The 12.9 liter PACCAR MX-13 engine and the 13-speed Fuller Advantage share critical data including torque, operating gear and other vehicle performance metrics. The PACCAR MX-13 engine is available with 380 to 500 horsepower and up to 1,850 ft.-lb. of torque. Peterbilt also announced a new EPIQ package for the Model 579. The package provides an optimized combination of technologies and components that allow customers to easily order and operate the most fuel efficient Model 579 available.

Mid-America Trucking Show Daily
According to the company, the EPIQ package can improve fuel efficiency of the Model 579 by up to 10%. The EPIQ package includes: • Complete Aerodynamic Package: This feature combines all fairings and aerodynamically enhanced components available for the Model 579. The fairings include 18-inch sleeper side extenders with 8-in. rubber flares; full chassis fairings with rubber skirts from the quarter fender to the front of the tandem axle with rubber closeouts under the sides of the cab and sleeper; and roof fairings with an exclusive rear wall closeout. Aerodynamically-enhanced components include a three-piece aero-style bumper; multi-piece aero-style hood; painted outside sun visor and an aero-style aluminum battery box positioned on the passenger side, under the cab. • PACCAR MX-13 Engine: The MX-13 engine delivers improved fuel economy through electronically controlled fuel injection pumps and high-pressure rail technology. • Fuller Advantage Automated Transmission: The PACCAR MX-13 Engine is available in a new drivetrain pairing, designated as APEX, with the Fuller Advantage Automated Transmission that is part of the EPIQ model. This new combination features precise communication between the engine and transmission, as well as proprietary control logic to further enhance fuel economy. • Single Horizontal Exhaust: To further increase aerodynamic performance, the EPIQ package recommends a single horizontal exhaust configuration or a single right-hand back-of-sleeper exhaust configuration. • SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): Incorrect tire pressure can play a significant factor in fuel efficiency so TPMS monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire and will warn the operator of tire-related problems. • Low Rolling Resistance Tires: Another way tires can improve fuel economy is by minimizing friction between tires and the road. Low rolling resistance tires are designed to do this and are available on the Model 579 spec’d with the EPIQ package. • Optimized Spec’ing Software: Peterbilt and its dealer network use a proprietary spec’ing system to optimize vehicle performance and exactly match customers’ business and application requirements. This software has been enhanced to complement the Model 579 EPIQ by recommending the most fuel-efficient rear axle ratios and engine settings, among other options. Additionally, Peterbilt announced it now offers compressed natural gas configurations for two of its newest vehicles — the on-highway Model 579 and the vocational Model 567. Both vehicles will be available with the Cummins-Westport ISX12 G. Peterbilt will showcase a CNG version of its Model 579 in its exhibit at MATS. The vehicle was equipped with Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies’ back-of-cab storage system. The Quantum back-of-cab system on display at the show provides Peterbilt customers with a lightweight, high-capacity CNG fuel storage solution. It uses Quantum’s compact Q-lite tank technology and can store 123 DGE (diesel gallon equivalents) of fuel and is designed for easy “drop-andgo” installation. mal management—they don’t lose intensity. With our state-of-the-art CAD software we were able to pair the LEDs with a radical new design in lens optics. It makes the entire lens glow with exceptional brightness. You don’t see any dead spots, and the contrast between major/minor functions is much greater. Compared to standard LED lights, the new lights are dramatically brighter across the whole product line—especially the ambers. Building legal front turns has been a challenge throughout the industry, but we’ve got them with LumenX.” Vice president of product management Kristen Goodson credits white diodes and Peterson’s verti-
cal integration for production efficiencies that enhance LumenX’s competitive pricing. “White diodes allow us to build one standard circuit board for the whole LumenX line. That really boosts our productivity and cost control. LumenX is simply a better light for the same money. Brighter, safer, better looking and made in America.” The models include red, amber and white in both 4-in. Rounds in 7- and 9-diode versions, and ovals in 7- and 10-diode versions. Each features fully integrated insert molded terminals for robust protection. All models can be ordered with AMP-compatible connections. Booth #32000 www.pmlights.com

Reman program revitalizes turbochargers New or remanufactured, BorgWarner said its turbochargers meet the toughest quality standards. Good as new— rebuilt with new original parts from its series production line, BorgWarner’s professionally remanufactured or reman turbochargers meet the same high-quality performance standards as their new turbochargers, but at a lower cost. The process involves completely disassembling the unit, replacing damaged or worn parts, reconditioning usable parts and re-assembling the turbocharger on one of the most advanced assembly lines in the world. Advanced testing procedures and balancing technology confirm high quality. Every reman turbocharger comes with a 12-month unlimited mileage warranty. The turbochargers help reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. They also reduce scrap that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. More than 1 million turbochargers have been revitalized through BorgWarner’s reman program. The same high-quality performance, lower cost, more environmentally friendly—these are all good reasons to get a BorgWarner reman turbocharger. The company added that it offers a broad range of commercial reman turbochargers. The global network of authorized distributors is everywhere you need it. Booth #36290 www.borgwarner.com

Cummins showcases new engine rating and connected diagnostics announced Cummins Inc. made announcements of fuel-efficiency improvements, a new engine rating and Connected Diagnostics. For the most fuel-conscious fleets, the ISX15 is available with ratings of 400 HP to 450 HP, which deliver peak torque at 1,000 rpm. All ratings can be uniquely tailored with electronic features like load-based speed control, gear-down protection and vehicle acceleration management to maximize fuel economy and reduce overall operating costs. ISX15 SmartTorque2 (ST2) ratings are available with the SmartAdvantage Powertrain, which delivers an additional 3% to 6% fuel-economy improvement. Jointly developed by Cummins and Eaton, the SmartAdvantage Powertrain integrates the Eaton Fuller Advantage Series automated manual transmission and Cummins ST2 ratings to operate the engine in the fuel-economy “sweet spot” and deliver excellent low-end torque and precise shifting, to help every driver perform like the best driver in the fleet. Cummins also announced the introduction of the new ISX15 560 HP rating, providing customers with the ability to further maximize productivity in their operations. Ideally suited for customers operating with heavy loads or on routes with steep grades, where pulling power and effective engine braking are critical, the ISX15 rating with 560 HP and 1,850 lb.-ft. of peak torque provides excellent prolonged low-end torque, delivering peak power sooner and over a wider rpm range. Cummins provides more customer support with the development of Connected Diagnostics, a new application being designed to work seamlessly with leading telematics systems. Cummins Connected Diagnostics will provide customers with expert recommendations for the best action to take when a driver is alerted to an engine system fault. Cummins Connected Diagnostics will be available in limited production later in 2014, with full production release planned for 2015. Booth #30035 www.cumminsengines.com

Webasto heats up sleeper cabs and more at MATS with Chelsea Bains in booth Promoting its Air Top 2000 ST bunk heaters and Thermo Top C coolant heaters, Webasto Thermo & Comfort North America has enlisted the help of country music singer Chelsea Bain. Bain will meet fans and perform at 2 p.m. in Webasto’s booth today at MATS. Additionally, booth visitors will have the chance to enter Webasto’s “Race To Win” contest for NASCAR tickets and a VIP experience with Chelsea Bain. “Webasto offers drivers superior bunk climate control and engine pre-heating solutions, and we’re excited to team up with an exceptional talent like Chelsea to help promote our product advantages,” Josh Lupu, marketing director for Webasto Thermo & Comfort North America, said. The company will showcase the comfort and effectiveness of its Air Top 2000 ST bunk heaters. The heaters consume less fuel and impose a lower amperage demand on the vehicle’s electrical system and battery than competing systems, making it an attractive choice for independent owners interested in striking a better balance between environmental and monetary costs. Webasto will also show how its SmarTemp Control works with the Air Top 2000 ST bunk heater. Webasto SmarTemp Control is a compact temperature management system. With the SmarTemp Control, drivers just dial in the temperature they want and the system delivers and maintains it. Webasto coolant heaters provide optimal temperature at start-up, and independent testing results show that pre-heating engines improves DPF performance and longevity. Pre-heating has also been demonstrated to extend the duration between cleaning cycles and to reduce maintenance costs. Booth. #18180 www.webasto.us
