I

n just its second year, the AIMExpo has quickly set itself up as the main focal point of the motorcycle and powersports industry in the U.S. Since we seem to travel to too many shows, anything that cuts down on our travel time and offers substantial information we can use in our businesses is a good show to attend as far as I’m concerned. Our staff is revved up about the show as are, I’m sure, the countless attendees who will be arriving in Orlando next month. At the show, you will be greeted at the front entrance by the lovely AIMExpo girls who will be passing out Show Dailies to the crowd each day during the trade portion of the show. We are proud to be part of AIMExpo once again, as we believe it is the single most important event of the year for dealers in terms of the educational and networking opportunities. Many in the industry were surprised and encouraged by the turnout last year, and this year promises to deliver even more of a good thing. More dealers have signed up to attend and more exhibitors will be on hand to lend their knowledge and show off their latest products. More OEMs will be there, too,

which makes for a well-rounded event and a great way to get amped about the upcoming year. You’ve got Yamaha, KYMCO, Massimo, EBR Motorcycles, Suzuki, Zero Motorcycles, Gibbs and Kawasaki all debuting 2015 lineups and some offering demo rides in the AIME Outdoors! exhibition area. RE: BACKFIRE Addressing Industry Issues I am taking you up on your August 2014 article ending concerning industry issues that need addressing, and there are a few. In the 36 years we have been at this location there have been many changes to the motorcycle industry. I address the motorcycle rather than powersports because street legal motorcycles are subject to many different conditions and regulations than off-road only vehicles. Having started in the motorcycle business in 1971, then migrated to the automotive side of service for a period of time and then decided to focus solely on motorcycles, I was fortunate to have the chance to learn about the automotive industry from primarily a parts and service direction. When I opened the store in April of 1978 I patterned the operations of the store after the automotive industry which has characteristically been four to eight years ahead of the motorcycle business in regulations, business operations and technology. It has helped keep the doors open for these many years, not operating as a stereotypical motorcycle shop. Two areas of contention as a start. The lack of Right To Repair legislation as applied to motorcycles and the often misapplied OEM position of the Magnuson-Moss Act. The manufacturers make obtaining service data and equipment nearly impossible for many brands. Of specific obstructiveness is Harley, Ducati and BMW who refuse to sell OEM equipment to an independent. They also use this technique to drive customers back to the dealer instead of attracting them. The lack of a common diagnostic language platform (e.g. OBD II) inhibits a customer's ability to choose the location for servicing their motorcycle. I suspect a smaller market than is viable to allow extensive aftermarket equipment sales is a big part of it, but even OEM equipment is not available. There is no availability of equipment for series of vehicles the dealer network no longer services due to age. This same inhibition has caused the loss of our crash estimating software provider due to manufacturers' issues with having flat rate times and retail parts prices available, although the insurance industry has access in a soon to be released version of this application. A similar technique is used by Harley in parts sales. I preferred to purchase parts from a dealer I had been buying from for 34 years. I was well-served and chose to purchase from this dealer. Harley sent a letter to the dealer informing them that I was not in their territory and severe penalties would be incurred if they continued to sell to us. Verification of sales was done by Harley combing their sales data. There was also mention of restrictions in how much we could purchase. I sent a copy of my response to each member of the board of Harley and copies to MPN, but was effectively ignored. I wonder if the paranoid defensiveness of the OEMs here is ever seen by themselves as in inhibition to future sales and value of current product lines? How can I recommend a brand and/or model I have no access to service data on? The grass-

roots recommendations of the independent service provider goes a long ways in directing new unit sales, especially when the dealer is 60 miles or more away. When I tell a customer the ZG-14 Concours will cost $700 or more at the major service interval, it gives them pause. I sure can't recommend a new BMW or Ducati because we can't access routine service electronic data, even though we have America's fastest Ducati and the world's quickest Ducati. I do appreciate the thoughtful articles and agree with Eric Anderson this month, as it is a very accurate description of our store, although we never did get away from the aversion to cookie cutter retail marketing. His insights at the seminars he gave at the Dealer Expos were greatly appreciated.

RE: Selling to Women Sometimes a reader comes across an article so timely, so appropriate for the culture today, that they are motivated to write and send a virtual “high five” to the editor with the foresight to publish it. Thus it is with your August issue and the highlighted cover article on "Selling to Women." Like a breath of fresh air, this subject is finally getting the needed recognition of the growing audience of women motorcycle enthusiasts (I happen to be one, currently riding a Honda F6B). I read the article with enthusiasm, having met Alisa on one of her journeys. She nails it in so many ways for women buyers. I used to own a Harley, and was completely turned off by the "biker culture" that permeated every aspect of what I love to do. Treating women as objects is not only a reflection of the motorcycle gang mentality, but is supported by advertisers who believe (erroneously) that women don't matter other than for how they look and what they do for, and to, men. So Alisa's article directly pinpointed what merchandisers need to do to get – and keep – a valuable and loyal following. I hope they hear her message. Thank you for seeing the value in the purchasing power of women. Things need to shift.

Challenges Polaris Dealers to ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Polaris Industries Inc.’s chairman and CEO, Scott Wine, completed the Ice Bucket Challenge, joining the viral campaign to raise awareness and funds for ALS. After accepting the challenge from Dan Ariens, president and CEO of Ariens, Wine in turn nominated Bahram Akradi, founder and CEO of Lifetime Fitness, Michael Guyette, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield, MN, and the entire Polaris dealer network. Wine noted in his video that if 100 Polaris dealers accept the challenge, Polaris will donate an additional $10,000 towards ALS research. “Polaris has a long history of giving back and is proud to support this effort,” said Wine. “We encourage our strong network of dealers to accept the nomination or donate to an ALS charity.” Polaris has been involved with the

Rainey and KRAVE Group to Manage AMA Road Racing Series AMA Hall of Famer Wayne Rainey and Chuck Aksland of the newly formed KRAVE Group LLC (dba MotoAmerica) have announced that they will be taking 8 September 2014 | Motorcycle & Powersports News

over the management of AMA Road Racing. Raney is a two-time AMA Champion and three-time 500cc GP World Champion. Aksland had a brief career as a road racer and went on to manage Team Kenny Roberts for 20 years. Recently, Aksland served as VP of motor sports operations at Circuit of the America (CoTA). Another partner in KRAVE Group LLC is Terry Karges, a former motorsports marketing executive and team owner who spent 17 years at Roush Performance before being named executive director of The Petersen Automotive Museum. Richard Varner is the fourth partner in KRAVE (Karges, Rainey, Aksland, Varner). Founder of Champions Moto motorcycles, Varner is also an energy sector entrepreneur and businessman. “When I was a kid first learning how to race, my ultimate goal – the goal of every young racer – was to compete in the AMA,” said KRAVE Group LLC Partner and MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey. “The United States has produced some of the fastest riders in the world,” Rainey continued. “To bring that status and excitement back to the U.S. we need to start fresh – and that is our ultimate goal. Husqvarna Announces 2015 Racing Contingency Program Competition is the lifeblood of riding dirt bikes, and as pioneers of the sport, Husqvarna Motorcycles has announced the coming of an all-new contingency program. Schuberth to Unveil New Helmet Model at 2014 AIMExpo Schuberth will be unveiling a completely new helmet model at the 2014 AIMExpo. Along with the new helmet, several new graphics and colorways on existing models will be showcased at the show. ear over year Average Wholesale Pricing (AWP) for July 2014 vs. 2013 continued to see softer prices for all on-highway categories, with cruisers down around two percent. The decline in sport bikes was the largest at eight percent and appears to be due to more inventory available this year vs. last, as well as the timing of OEM rebates and incentives for new models. Inventory levels for off-road categories (ATVs, MX and Side-X-Sides) remain tight this year, which likely explains the increase in AWP for most of those categories this year vs. last. AWP in July 2014 for ATVs increased by seven percent over 2013, while AWP for the MX category increased six percent. Side-X-Sides posted a decline of two percent over 2013, which we believe is due to a shift in inventory mix to fewer late model, higher-MSRP models being available. July vs. Prior Three Months As expected, wholesale pricing dropped in July vs. the past three months. This is the normal seasonal characteristic for this time of year, and further declines are likely in August and September before stabilizing for the fall. All product categories trended downward except the dual sport category, which had an increase of six percent due to the relatively tight, but desirable product in the wholesale market. Metric cruisers posted the biggest drop for the onhighway categories with an 11 percent decrease over the prior months, while domestic cruisers and sport bikes reflected single digit declines. We believe domestic cruisers will decline more precipitously in August and into September, as dealers report more excess inventory than usual this time of year. The decline in AWP for off-highway categories was in the single digits, which is typical for this time of year. The two most price-volatile categories, snowmobiles and PWCs, both posted sizable decreases of 33 percent and 23 percent respectively, but we consider such large swings to be more a reflection of their volatility than a meaningfully different trend than usual. t

resistance during my test rides with the Concorde, however, I had two very different experiences while wearing it. My first trip out was an early evening ride. Still almost 70 degrees when I started, I opted to remove the thermal liner. I could feel the sweat start to bead up on my neck. At speed I immediately noticed that

the shell wasn’t allowing even the warmer air to get to my skin. The sleeves, without the liner, allow for most any style glove to be worn. After an hour or so, the sun began to set and temperatures dropped. On a naked bike, without the liner I was starting to feel less comfortable. At about 60 degrees I was rethinking the decision I made about the liner. I was stiff and chilled. Later that week I went for an early morning ride. It was a crisp, dew filled morning, 45 degrees and gray. The Concorde features a color coded snap system that made reinstalling the thermal liner faster and easier than any jacket I’ve previously owned! As I drove away from home I already felt the cold air through my jeans. On to a main road I again got up to speed and felt the sensation of continued warmth through my chest, back and arms. The wax cotton does exactly what it was intended for keeping me dry. Midwest Dealer Breathes New Life into Used Motorcycles iMotorsports, Inc. is looking to set new trends

H

aider Saba, and his business partner Tim Walter, first caught a glimpse of what life would be like as motorcycle dealership owners when they started a used motorcycle operation out of Walter’s garage in 2003. While they saw some success for a year or two using eBay, they were in their early 20s then and both wanted to get their lives started career-wise. Walter went to work for a successful family business, and Saba went to work for a bank. Fast forward to 2009, and the longtime friends were itching to revisit those same dreams they had a number of years ago – running a successful used motorcycle dealership. The difference this time around was that both Saba and Walter had more life experience and a better understanding of what it would take to run a business. So, in 2009 iMotorsports became incorporated, and in April 2010 it opened its doors. Now 32, Saba is coowner and general manager of the used motorcycle dealership he says is the largest single location used independent dealership in Illinois, and might likely have the highest volume as well. “We’ve seen tremendous growth of about 40-50 percent every year since we started,” Saba says. “We started with 20 motorcycles in stock and in our first year we sold 110-120 motorcycles from April to December.” Just last year, 2013, iMotorsports sold 500 motorcycles with an average inventory around 130. This year the dealership is on pace to sell anywhere between 750 to 800 units. “We’re actually exceeding our 50 percent growth prediction of 750, and if everything goes well we should be able

to beat that and get closer to 800,” Saba says. “Our average inventory right now hovers around 200 units.” Four years after opening its doors, business is looking good for iMotorsports. In fact, business has been so good the dealership moved to a new 25,000 sq. ft. location in April of this year. “In my eyes, and I’m probably a little biased, it’s one of the nicest motorcycle facilities I’ve ever been to,” Saba says. “It’s an old car dealership. We have a front showroom, a rear showroom, parts and accessories, full service department, and a full F&I department.” So why did Saba and Walter decide to focus on the used market? “We believe there is a huge need and demand for the used market,” he says. “I think people like us are the start of a trend. I think you’re going to see a lot more guys like

us in the next five to 10 years get on that bandwagon who realize there’s money to be made, and no franchise watching over you, telling you what to do.” While success has found iMotorsports, it wasn’t by dumb luck or a good dealership location. In fact, it was quite the opposite according to Saba. He says hard work, good marketing and outperforming the competition were the keys. “Since 2009-’10 we worked out of

free shipping to the main 48 states,” he says. “We’ve gained a lot of customers over the years because of that. We have return customers from California, Florida, New York and more. When a local

I’m thankful for that experience, because what that made us do was go above and beyond in our marketing and advertising.” Due to those circumstances, iMotorsports needed to go above and beyond what some dealers in better locations might have had to do to get customers in the door. “We really had to be on top of our game with a great website, great marketing, great prices, the whole nine yards,” he says. “Some of the issues you see in the industry today are guys that had or have a great location who wake up every morning and think people are going to walk in, and that’s not going to happen. You have to go out there and get the customers.” iMotorsports’ early days forced Saba and his team to think differently about gaining customers. The dealership prides itself on offering its customers perks that others don’t and likely won’t. “One of the biggest policies we have in place that I’m really proud of, because I don’t think anybody else does this, is

customer comes in and says, ‘Hey, where is that bike I saw yesterday?’ And I tell them that a guy in Louisiana picked up the phone and bought it, they are dumbfounded.” Furthermore, what separates iMotorsports from its competition is its pricing, which s very aggressive for a large dealership its size. “I shop other dealer’s websites all the time nationwide to see where they are pricing their inventory, and we try to be one of the cheapest,” Saba says. “I can’t say we are always one of the cheapest, but we are pretty darn close almost every time.” In addition to free shipping and strong pricing, Saba offers his customers a money back guarantee on his used

inventory, even for out-of-state buyers. “When we ship the motorcycle to you and you’re not happy with it, pick up the phone and call us within 24 hours or 50 miles and we will offer you a 100 percent money back guarantee as long as the bike is in the same condition,” he says. “All we ask of them is to pay for the shipping that iMotorsports spent back and forth. That’s another policy even local dealers don’t offer to customers, let alone across the country.” Customers certainly feel more comfortable knowing they have a money back guarantee on their purchase, but Saba says the policy is very seldom exercised. “We try to go above and beyond and tell customers exactly what’s involved with their purchase before they purchase it,” he says. “Every motorcycle we sell on our website not only has pictures, but also has a highdefinition video where you get a walk around and you hear the motorcycle run.” Having such high detail within its website descriptions of its motorcycles has greatly benefitted the company. “I would say 80 percent of our business is local Chicagoland business, but nine out of 10 customers today are hopping online to buy,” Saba says. “That’s how people are finding the vehicles they want to buy. Once they do find a motorcycle they like, then they can go down to the dealer and sit on it and look at it and be sure of the purchase.” Given iMotorsports’ brief, but highly successful history, it seems many customers will be pleased with their used motorcycle purchases for years to come. “Our goal moving forward is to keep doing what we are doing and keep growing and finding new ways to stay ahead of the curve,” Saba says. “We always want to be ahead with new ideas, new policies, new ways to improve the purchasing process and experience, and give you more peace of mind.” t

“W

hatever Kenny [Roberts] did, I’m going to do it better!” laughs motorcycle road racing legend Kevin Schwantz when we asked what he thought he’d be doing for the AIMExpo as its “Show Champion.” Spoken like someone who still has the competitive fire burning after an illustrious professional racing career that he retired from almost two decades ago. In motorcycle racing terms, when Schwantz retired from racing in 1995 at the age of 31, he was an old man. The amount of physical exertion and mental focus had taken its toll on him like it did many others at about the same age when they hung up their helmets. “Nine times out of 10 you look at a

Eddie Lawson or a Wayne Gardner, or any of the guys of our era, and by the time you turned 30 you were either looking for something else to do or you rode a Cagiva. I think that’s why Eddie’s career drug on for a couple of more years,” jokes Schwantz, who is still a relatively young man at 50. The wear and tear of riding a 2-stroke 500cc grand prix bike was brutal on riders’ bodies as it was much more physically demanding than even today’s grand prix bikes, and Schwantz would know because he has ridden both. But he says the reason the 500s hurt people more was because they bounced more frequently, and the throttle was like a light-switch – either on or off, no in between.

“Most of us got in it in our mid-20s and got out by the time we were in our early 30s,” he says. In today’s racing environment where safety is a higher priority and the bikes are not as beastly to ride, he would have some more miles left in the tank. However, Schwantz says that he is perfectly content with where he is at the moment – as an ambassador to the industry he loves. The AIME people wanted Schwantz as their Show Champion because of everything that he embodies about the sport. E

ver wonder what it would have been like if rock and roll had never gone farther than a certain radio station in Cleveland where the term was coined? While the Ace Cafe in London was originally just a roadside diner, it has cemented its place in history as the foundation of the “ton up boys,” a group of young motorcyclists in the early 1950s who loved rock ‘n’ roll and who customized their motorcycles to reach speeds of 100 mph running from cafe to cafe. It’s difficult to say what had more impact on the British public at the time – the music or the cafe racers that were beginning to pop up at roadside cafes along the London motorway. But one thing was for certain: the two lifestyles went hand-in-hand. The Ace’s motoring heritage dates back to November 1938, when it was built as a roadside cafe to cater to truckers and motorists outside London. In November 1940, the cafe received a direct hit from a bomb during a World War II air raid and was completely destroyed. A temporary building was quickly erected so that business could continue, and today, some 76 years later, the Ace still operates in that same location. The Ace Cafe London is an original that will never be duplicated, with a style and culture all its own. While the Ace has captured the attention of the world in the last 76 years, it recently picked up steam stateside when American Mark McKee partnered with Ace Cafe London to expand the brand into the U.S. Ace Cafe London hosted events here on U.S. soil, beginning with the Barber Vintage Festival, the Bonneville Salt Flats Time Trials, and the New York Auto Show (among others), and is now ready to take it to the

next level in a very unique location that includes the restoration of three historic industrial buildings in downtown Orlando. “In the UK, the folks who love the Ace call themselves ‘Petrolheads,’” says McKee. “In the U.S., although we don’t use the word ‘petrol’ much, the Ace will occupy the same space in the hearts of people who share a common passion for something real and authentic, that speaks to their individuality and independence around expressing their love of machines and motors.” The Ace in America is something that has been a long time coming, according to Mark Wilsmore, founder of Ace Cafe London. Wilsmore says that for years people have been asking him when the Ace was going to the U.S. Now, through a lot of hard work, and a little luck, the British are coming. Again. Only this time on bikes! “For the last dozen years I have had Americans visiting the Ace every month and asking me when we would open an Ace in the states,” says Wilsmore. “The demand for the Ace brand has pushed us to the U.S. Our focus now is 100 percent on Ace Cafe Orlando, to give our customers a home to share their passion.” McKee acknowledges that there were several locations in the U.S. that were in the running to be Ace’s first U.S. home, but Orlando won out for a variety of reasons. “We looked at a number of great cities, but Orlando quickly rose to the top of our list,” he explains. “Everything just fit. The city was totally supportive, and we got a spectacular three-acre location in the middle of downtown with open parking. There’s great weather – plus there’s a ton of great clubs, poker runs, swap meets, and a huge interest in everything moto. AIMExpo is here, Bike Week

and Speed Weeks are in Daytona; and there’s Sebring, Homestead, Bradenton, AMA pro racing … the list is endless.” The location for the new Ace Cafe in Orlando will be right on the train tracks at 100 W. Livingston Street, so people from all sides of the tracks can convene. McKee says the plan is to renovate three rundown buildings that are almost 100 years old there – the former Harry P. Leu buildings. There’s also a backyard garden located along the tracks that hasn’t been tended to in over 25 years that they are going to restore and replant with native and exotic plants, creating a place for outdoor patio dining, complete with walkways and outdoor BBQs, and an area to listen to live music and see great bikes. “Although we share the same love of everything moto, we are not located on the outskirts of town, as we are in London,” says McKee. “Our location in downtown Orlando was selected purposely to be in the downtown core, in an area that we could help restore, in a location where residents and visitors to Orlando could get an authentic experience like you get in London.”

The Ace Cafe Orlando will be a moto-centric compound, with sub-tenants that will add to the appeal and excitement of the destination. McKee and his team say they are also going to partner with brands and businesses that will benefit from their strong marketing platform. The Ace Cafe Orlando, along with partners Dime City Cycles and Cafe-Moto, will be exhibiting at the AIMExpo again this year in booths 2401A & 2301 and will have cafe racers on display, as well as Ace Cafe merchandise, and a couple of surprises. And, to top it off, they are planning a Saturday evening concert in the AIMExpo lobby with Lee Rocker from the Stray Cats, playing all the greatest hits and more. McKee says, “AIMExpo is where the industry comes to meet, and we were fortunate to be here last year. And we’ll continue to be here. Plus, next year we’ll be open, so we’ll throw a big party for AIMExpo at the new Ace Cafe in downtown Orlando.” The Ace is already well-known among the cafe racer crowd, but according to McKee and his team, there will be something for everyone at the new Ace Cafe Orlando, including hot rodders, muscle cars, V-twin cruisers and lovers of good music, good food and good times. a dealership when he was growing up. He rode his first road race on his uncle’s flat track bike. He has really done it all in the industry from top to bottom – AND he’s the 1993 500cc Grand Prix motorcycle racing champion. Kevin says that he will do whatever is necessary to help promote the show and is looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up with what’s new. “AIME put together a show last year that everyone took notice of, and that has brought in a lot of new partners. I continue to see the emails of a new exhibitor or manufacturer being announced. Obviously Larry Little and his crew have done a great job and I’m really looking forward to getting there to see it first hand and to have the opportunity to see what’s new in the

industry and what everybody’s up to.” Besides being the Show Champion for AIME, Schwantz keeps himself busy these days in a variety of roles. He is an ambassador to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, TX. In April, just before the MotoGP race there, Schwantz got to ride a superbike for the first time on the track he helped design. Then, after the race, he was employed by Suzuki’s fledgling MotoGP squad to evaluate the company’s hopeful new contender for the 2015 championship. “It was fun to get to ride it,” says Schwantz. “If Suzuki were serious about letting me help develop the bike, I would love to ride it some more. I feel like I’m still fast enough that I can help with that development.” Schwantz says that it is difficult to

evaluate how much of a contender the new machine is without a baseline. But up against the superbike, he said that it was no comparison. He says that Suzuki still has plans to run it this year, but in typical Texan, straight-forward style he said they need to start racing as soon as possible to find out where they stack up right now, not later. “You need to be racing as much as you can.” And that is a motto he used to live by and sometimes still does. In fact, earlier this year he had the chance to ride in the Suzuka 8-hour race in Japan, but it was short lived as his teammate crashed the bike in the first stint in rainy conditions. But rain or shine, the competitive fire still burns in Kevin Schwantz – which is something we all could use a dose of. t

Get Fall Unit Inventory in Shape Understand your dealership’s “like model” inventory options

I

f you’re a little heavy on inventory this fall, here’s a great exercise for your next sales department meeting. It touches on a delicate topic, but it’s one we must consider to improve unit inventory turnover and significantly improve our bottom line. The exercise goes like this: Go through a real-life scenario where a consumer walks into a showroom, asking about the availability and pricing of Model A. It just so happens you have Model A in stock, but just as importantly, you also have two non-current models for which you’re paying flooring expense. We don’t want to turn the

customer away from their first choice, of course, but it’s in their interest to understand all of the options, including the non-current models that could offer better pricing or financing. You ask your staff during the sales meeting, “How would you approach this conversation to identify whether the noncurrent models might be a better fit for the consumer?” Features, right? Your sales staff has to understand the significant features that attracted the consumer to Model A. Are those features also available in the older models you still have in stock? If so, what are they? The correct answer to the features question is easily found

through modern lead management and dealer management platforms. Those platforms offer “like model” comparisons where Model A and similar units are shown in detail on the same screen. This is a great tool that can be utilized during sales meetings to ensure proper product knowledge. These “like model” tools are becoming more sophisticated in new dealer management platforms. Now, some platforms like even allow “like models” to be sorted by age, meaning your oldest models will be given top priority in these comparisons. If your sales staff can identify the difference between Model A and its 2013 predecessor, can they do the same with a similar model offered by another OEM? It’s a sales staff meeting exercise with potentially huge payoffs, especially in the fall and spring when new inventory is on the showroom floor. We learn about new models but forget to compare the similarities and differences with their predecessors – the older models still sitting on the showroom floor. The “like model” exercise can be done during a sales staff meeting, long before the actual consumer interaction. What about the consumer conversation itself? Can the “like model” tool be equally helpful then? Yes, although many

experienced sales staffers won’t interrupt a conversation to log on to their lead manager or dealer management platform for a “like model” comparison. This makes sense if that experienced salesperson has nailed your sales meeting exercise. You used your lead manager or dealer business system to identify your older product, gave your staff a current list of those units, and then did the training to ensure your staff is well versed on the “like model” comparison. You’re ready to go. Ready to get that fall inventory in better shape. If your staff doesn’t perform so well on the model comparison or is inexperienced, the “like model” tool should be considered part of the sales process. After all, the consumer is probably using such tools as they search

your website for units. Why not take advantage of that same concept throughout the entire sales process? Before or after the sale, the “like model” tool is definitely one to be considered this time of year. Heavy on Inventory? his article contains actual numbers obtained from our 20-group data reporting and analysis system. 20-groups consist of dealers from non-competing markets who meet three times a year to share financial and best practice information. Their goal is to grow and improve their businesses profitably. As you can see from the Total Store stats, sales are up – slightly – for the group and National Norm dealers, but significantly for the group’s Top 5. Although the group didn’t hit the benchmark target of 25 percent, margins look considerably better for them and the National Norm dealers. Are you among the dealers who say, “I can’t afford an F&I person?” Think very seriously about the 15-17 percent contribution that F&I could make to your gross profit. Do the math. Financed deals made a big jump for the Top 5. Getting the financing opens the door to a lot more income for your store. It’s not just the opportunity to addon F&I products; your add-on P&A sales are affected by your ability to capture their financing in house. Note that the National Norm average for gross profit dollars per employee is actually higher than that of the Top 5 members of this particular group. Where do you stand? It’s not that hard to calculate. It’s always good to see an increase in gross profit over the previous year. We like to see personnel expenses under 20 percent – the group is a bit high in this area. In the previous paragraph I mentioned the importance of capturing the financing in relation to dealership profits. Take a look at the comparison in gross profit per vehicle sold vs. gross profit

I find it interesting that the Top 5 are slightly lower in dollars per vehicle sold compared to the National Norm, but they are killing it in dollars per vehicle financed at $1,400 a copy. That is excellent. The last two lines should speak volumes about why you need a welltrained F&I person. If you don’t have one, you need to ask yourself this question. Could your dealership have benefitted from an extra $100,000 + in gross profit over seven months? Overall, dealers average around one person in this department…but that person produces a phenomenal amount of gross profit dollars. I love seeing the finance penetration numbers consistently above the 50

percent mark. The Top 5 are nearing 63 percent! They are also selling almost 40 percent service contracts. That is good in today’s world of extended warranty “freebies” from many of the OEs. Prepaid maintenance (we prefer calling them Preferred or VIP programs) is working its way back up – particularly for the National Norm dealers. This is an excellent way to tie your customers to your store. Keep their service business and you have a much better chance of getting their next unit sale. GAP sales are profitable and benefit many people who are buying high-dollar bikes and UTVs. If you haven’t gone after this business, you should look into it. If it requires an insurance license in your state, get one.

Making money with F&I is not (forgive me) rocket science. Hire a talented F&I producer, provide them with ongoing training, acquire every F&I product you can sell, offer them to EVERY purchaser, EVERY time. Those are the basic rules for making it happen in your F&I department. t

Engine Decompression Systems

he decompressor system reduces cylinder compression at low rpm for easy starting. Decompressor systems are often used with single cylinder four-stroke engines, but manufacturers sometimes utilize these benefits on other engine configurations including V-twins. The compression is reduced by momentarily opening an exhaust valve on the compression stroke of the piston to partially vent the combustion chamber. Reducing the engine compression reduces the force required to kick start or pull start the engine, and allows the use of smaller less powerful electric starting components.

inspection to ensure correct function. Check the service manual and periodic maintenance chart of the particular vehicle for the details and specifications associated with the decompression system of the vehicle.

Manual decompressor systems on four-stroke engines often use a cable controlled lever to apply pressure to the exhaust valve or rocker arm. The cable or lever free-play must be maintained within specification. Check the free-play at TDC, or as otherwise indicated by the service manual. Adjust the cable free-play as needed.

Automatic decompressor systems often use springloaded weights on the camshaft to operate a pin located inside the camshaft or a special decompressor rocker arm. At rest and below idle rpm the weight(s) are held in by the springs, and the decompressor rocker arm or pin will contact the exhaust valve or rocker arm to release compression.

Internal automatic decompressor systems use a pin inside the camshaft to open the exhaust valve to release pressure from the combustion chamber.

When the engine starts and the camshaft is rotating at speed the weight(s) will sling out. This change in position of the weight/s moves the decompressor rocker arm or pin into a position where it will not contact the exhaust valve or rocker arm and the engine will have full compression. Inspect the decompressor mechanism functions smoothly and correctly as the weight(s) are manually moved out to a running position and allowed to return to a resting position. If the mechanism sticks or fails to operate correctly, inspect the components in more detail for condition and correct assembly. Manual or automatic decompressor systems that use a lever or decompressor specific rocker arm often use an adjustable tappet that must maintain a correct clearance with the exhaust

Some engines have a reverse decompressor mechanism to reduce the cylinder compression if the engine kicks back during start up. This system uses a decompressor cam that rides on the camshaft with a one-way clutch. When the camshaft is turning the regular direction of rotation, the reverse decompressor cam is held in place by a spring-loaded stopper and the camshaft turns freely in the one-

If the engine kicks back on start up and momentarily turns the camshaft in reverse, the one way clutch locks up and moves the decompressor cam with the camshaft to slightly open an exhaust valve to relieve engine compression. This reduces the strength of the kickback. When the engine begins rotating in the normal direction the decompressor cam will be halted by the stopper and the camshaft will turn freely and operate without the decompressor cam opening the exhaust valve. Check the function of the one-way

clutch. The decompressor cam should rotate smoothly in the direction of the stopper ramp and lock to the camshaft in the opposite direction. Make sure the spring-loaded stopper moves smoothly without sticking. The stopper ramp must be able to pass the stopper in one direction, but be stopped by it in the other. A poorly maintained decompression system that doesn’t release compression as it should can result in poor starting and excessive strain on starting components. A decompression system that releases compression when it shouldn’t can result in an engine that refuses to start or has poor performance. Inspect these systems to make sure they are in specification and operate correctly. t

Sales and Finance: Why Can’t We Be Friends?

M

ost of the time, there is at least a little friction between sales and finance. Having been on both sides of this relationship, I understand that neither side is in the right or wrong. Sales and finance share the responsibility of getting as many bikes, ATVs, side-bysides and other products as they can out the door; but at the same time, they have totally different roles. The most common complaint I hear about finance is that they take too long to complete a deal. From finance, I hear that sales is always rushing them. These are two sides of the same issue. When each side can see this and try to bridge the gap, they find that they can be friends! Sales says: “All finance needs to do is get some paperwork signed, and the customer can leave with the bike.” Finance says: “I need to make sure all customer information is complete and legible. I need to make sure all of the forms are printed correctly. I need to make sure I have copies or IDs, proof-ofinsurance, proof-of-address and any other stipulation the bank requires for funding. I also need to sell as much product as I can without exceeding the finance cap. I need to make sure parts doesn’t add anything on at the last minute that mess the figures up. And I need to answer questions for salespeople about five other deals when they can’t remember the customer’s name, all while getting the one I am working on ready for the next customer.” Do these complaints sound familiar? They are both right. So, how do we improve this situation? First, we need to acknowledge that all of these needs from both sides are legitimate.

Customers need to be out of the dealership ASAP. We all know that our industry is one of want, not need. If the sale takes too long, we can lose it all together. This benefits nobody! Both sides need to agree that the finance department will do everything they can to get the customers handled as quickly and efficiently as possible.

All forms need to be completed correctly and legibly. The issue of incomplete, inaccurate, or illegible information is by far the biggest slow down in the finance office. With all online credit applications, specific pieces of information must be filled in. If this information is missing from the application, the person entering the information must stop and track down the customer and get this information before moving forward. If the finance source that is being used has an application with a short time-out function, the system can also time-out while the information is being collected. Then the application needs to be entered again from the beginning, costing more time. Even worse than that is a situation where the information is inaccurate and the customer is wrongly denied credit due to erroneous information. What if the customer is not financing? Finance can easily waste five or more minutes reprinting a customer’s paperwork if the salesperson forgot to write “Jr.” at the end of the customer’s name. One of the easiest ways to remedy these situations is to have the sales or finance manager review all customer information with the customer before entering it into either an online credit application or your DMS. This may seem like it will take extra time, but the time

Yes, the salespeople should be fully informed about the status of their deals; and finance needs to be left alone to get paperwork ready for the next customer. The most effective way to satisfy both parties’ needs is to have a simple “bank submission log.” If finance logs ALL bank activity on each deal, including bank stipulations, there should be no reason that a salesperson would need to interrupt finance to ask about the status of a customer’s credit application. I have seen this done on paper, on a cloud service such as Google Docs, or on the dealership’s internal server. As long as the finance manager keeps the log up to date and the salespeople know where to find the information, both sides can get what they need. t

Finance needs to sell their products. The salesperson gets plenty of time to sell the bike. When that is done, finance deserves to have the chance to make their sales.

Made In Italy, Shocking The World! In 2012, the EICMA Show in Milan was the site of some shocking news … literally as the Energica EGO stunned the gas-powered guys at the world's largest motorcycle show. In less than three years, the CRP Group has gone from a prototype to proven product tested by journalists from around the world to shopping the U.S. market. Sold-out demo dates in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York this summer indicate this is more than smoke and mirrors. MPN saw the stunning prototype

in Milan in 2013 and most recently up close and personal at a showing in L.A. hosted by our friends from the Italian Trade Association. Energica’s parent company, CRP Group, specializes in rapid prototyping,

precision machining and overnight turnaround for high-profile aerospace and motorsports clients. Headquartered in Modena in the heart of Italy’s auto racing industry, CRP’s neighbors/clients include the likes of Ferrari, Maserati and Lamorghini, so it is only natural that they wanted to make something with a sporting bent, but a street legal superbike seems pretty ambitious for a first product. “Everyone wants to make something they like; we chose the superbike,” claims CRP CFO Andrea Vezzani. “Why electric? Because it is a challenge. We cannot fight against Ducati, so we needed to invent something else.”

Its tagline – “100% Italian Racing Bloodlines, 0% Emissions” – makes sense for the first all-electric superbike in the context of doing something different than Ducati. Built by the same people at the CRP Group that have designed and engineered racing performance from F1 to the 24 hours of Le Mans for more than 40 years, the high-tech EGO looks like it has what it takes to beat the internal combustion engine. At the heart of this thoroughbred is an all electric motor which produces an astounding 195 Nm torque from 0 rpm to redline, an electronically limited 150 mph (240 km/h) and a 0 – 100 time of under three seconds. All on just pennies worth of energy. Top of the line racing

components, on board chargers, and a range of approximately 120 miles of real world riding, with a phase 4 DC charge to 85 percent in just 30 minutes. In addition to its motivation, the electric motor makes for a different riding experience. “With no transmission gears, clutch or shifting, the process of searching for the ‘right gear’ and rpm is eliminated allowing for full concentration on braking, cornering line and acceleration,” explains Energica chief technology officer, Giampiero Testoni. “The excitement of riding an electric motorcycle is more power, less work and feeling instant torque.” Testoni adds, “It is hard to compare electric vehicles with gas-powered ones. The combustion engine achieves torque on a curve that requires higher revolutions to obtain maximum performance. An EV motor delivers maximum torque from the wheel to the ground in a totally linear fashion. You have to experience it for yourself.” While the power delivery is radically different the basic running gear and EGO’s ergonomics are familiar ground. The frame and components are superbike spec equipment that can be found on its gas-powered competition. Brembo mono bloc brakes, fullyadjustable Öhlins shock, Marzocchi cartridge forks and Marchesini wheels are standard equipment on the $34,000 EGO. A limited edition up-spec EGO 45, complete with carbon fiber body work, fully adjustable 43mm Öhlins forks and forged OZ wheels will also be made, but production is limited to 45 units worldwide, so perspective U.S. dealers probably don’t want to even know the asking price! Standard models should be available in America starting in April of 2015. t
