SHOW DAILY ASA President and Executive Director Welcomes Exhibitors and Attendees at Opening General Session Dan Risley, president and executive director of the Automotive Service Association (ASA), joked yesterday morning at the Opening General Session that when the decision was made last July to move NACE | CARS to Detroit, the looks on people’s faces were priceless. “I couldn’t even describe it,” Risley said. “People were very much surprised. People said, are you crazy? Are you out of your mind? We’re going to get robbed! I won’t bring my staff. And, we’ll be attacked by wild dogs.” They were moving away from a major destination city to Detroit. “What you probably don’t know, or maybe you do know if you’ve

been a frequent attendee of NACE | CARS, is that our show has always been in a major destination city, whether it was Orlando, Vegas or New Orleans. But we’ve never had it in Detroit. Not that it’s not a great city, we’re just not competing with Mickey Mouse and slot machines. We are, however, in the mecca and birthplace of the automotive industry.” Also, they were moving the show from a November timeframe to July. And just two days before Risley and ASA made that announcement last year that the show was moving to Detroit, the city filed for bankruptcy. Yet, 12 months later, Risley stood before the crowd of 400 or so and said he couldn’t be more

happy with the decision the board made to bring the show to the Motor City. “The local support has been unbelievable, and by local, I’m talking about the people who are here every day. When we’ve been in other cities, we’ve gotten support, but not the local support like we’ve gotten here.” Risley then recognized various companies for rallying around the show, and noted the $300 million renovation the Cobo Center is undergoing. He also noted changes to the show this year, including adding tours so attendees could enjoy the city as well as the show, and 20,000 square feet of space dedicated to live demos with running

vehicles, welding and refinishing – a first in U.S. history, he said. “As a result of these changes, I’m proud to say we’re up 40 percent in registration over the same time last year,” said Risley. Risley concluded his opening comments by saying, “I wasn’t sure what to expect when we moved the show to Detroit nine months after our last show ended in November, so we appreciate the exhibitors’ and attendees’ time, money and resources they dedicated to be here today. This has all been made possible not by ASA, its board of directors or staff, not the show management company, Stone Fort Group, but all of you - because if you didn’t embrace and support it, we wouldn’t be here today.”
BodyShop Business Presents Collision Repair Shop Executive of the Year Awards BodyShop Business Publisher Scott Shriber presented Tom Griffin with the 2014 Multi-Shop Executive of the Year Award and Rachel Minshall with the 2014 Single-Shop Executive of the Year Award at yesterday’s Opening General Session. The award has been given out by BodyShop Business since 1984 to a true collision repair visionary who has experienced great success by being forward-thinking, overcoming challenges and persevering. This is the first year BodyShop Business handed out two awards recognizing both single-shop and multi-shop owners and managers.
Tom Griffin Griffin’s collision career spans 30 years. He now leads a two-store operation in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, that’s described as a “thriving family business that provides an extraordinary experience for customers and a rewarding work environment for employees.” “What is truly unique is the customer-centered focus Tom instills in every one of his employees. He will often ask, ‘How is that relevant to our customer?’ and constantly challenges us not to ‘chest pound’ but to honestly evaluate everything we do from the customer’s point of view,” says an employee. Griffin is also known for

helping young people find their way in the industry and championing women in the industry, hiring and nurturing many female employees in his company. Outside of his business, Griffin has served as past president of Coyote Vision Group and president of the Automotive Service Association Greater Cleveland Chapter. He also sits on the board of the Solon Chamber of Commerce. Mayfield Collision Centers is also the only body shop to participate in GuitarMania, a Greater Cleveland community public art project that has raised $2 million for United Way and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s education programs. mechanic in 1996 in the Ford Asset program. An injury ended her career as a mechanic after only two years, but she persevered, switched directions and became the first female service advisor at Soerens. That was the moment she realized what she was born to do: help people by getting their vehicles fixed right the first time. In 2006, another opportunity arose, this time to grow the body shop, so she became the first female body shop manager at Soerens. Right away, she started updating all the training and certifications at the shop. Within the first year of taking over the shop, she and all the technicians became ICAR Platinum and the shop became I-CAR Gold. “What makes Rachel different is that she is kind and fair to technicians and customers,” says an employee. “She goes above and beyond to help the customer’s every need, such as staying late to write an estimate or going to the customer to write the estimates if needed. She states at least 20 times a day, ‘Whatever is easier for you,’ and she goes to the extreme to help people.”

Training Session Highlights the Importance of Proper Alignment Late-Model Vehicles In an over capacity training session, Snap-on’s Chris Sobieski presented a two-part class on vehicle alignment and how collision and mechanical shops need to not only fix the traditional alignment angles, but the sensors and computers. “Vehicle behavior that is normally associated with wheel alignment such as a pull or drift may not be directly related to the tires and wheels,” said Sobieski, Equipment Specialist for Snap-on Equipment. “Being able to diagnose, repair and reset electric power steering and electronic stability control as part of the alignment can be just as important as the angles.” Classes covered the importance of wheel alignment on today’s vehicles, understanding the importance
of restoring the vehicles dimensions and geometric angles to factory conditions so the dynamic driver assist and stability control programs perform as designed. “It might be just one visual sign like excessive brake noise or dust on just one wheel may be a sign that a late-model vehicle with a stability control system may have an alignment angle problem or and issue with one of the sensors,” said Sobieski. Sobieski also looked at how performing alignment checks and alignments can be profitable and make a quicker return on investment if the right alignment equipment is purchased. Sobieski will be at Snap-on booth (#31003) during the show.
