EDITOR’SNOTES The Love of Tools Is Shared Among Many After the June/July issue of TechShop came out, I heard from an industry friend about my “Common Sense Tool Advice” column, which featured “fatherly advice” from my coworker Andrew Markel’s dad. Denny Mandeville, the owner and lead technician of Canyon Automotive in Sedona, AZ, and I have kept in touch over the years after meeting at one of my first aftermarket industry events, back around 1999, after he was named the NAPA/ASE Automotive Technician of the Year. I’m sure many of you feel the same way about tools as he does, so I thought I’d share his comments.
from high school (1965), and I still have 90% of them. The missing 10% is thanks to my son, but I look at that as payback for my dad. I also have tools from my grandfather and great-grandfather. That missing 10% of my tools is payback for my dad because of his lost tools from my adolescence. What goes around comes around. One of my sayings has been “my dad survived me, as his dad survived him and I will survive my children.” The best part about being older is watching your grandchildren do to their parents as they did to me (and their mom). My son, while working for me, is not a mechanical type of guy. His tool purchases are more whatever the tool truck vendor convinces him he needs rather than the practical. He doesn’t want to listen to the old guy manage his life. His toolbox is full of tools that have never been out of the packaging — and probably never will be. The only tools I own that have never/seldom been used are the tools bought for cars/repairs that never became the problem envisioned. By the way, want to set the valves on your Pinto (this particular wrench found a new lease on life when I found it would reach injector nuts on a GM 6.2), adjust the clutch on your Vega, change starter drives on Ford starters, need to remove the clutch head screws in your GM? Come see me, I can set you up. Need a “spark catcher” for use with a scope, file your points or rethread the Quadrajet fuel inlet? I’m your man. The right tool for the job, used in the right way, will get the job done in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of blood spilt. I don’t buy tools “just because,” I purchase tools as I need them, or find out a certain tool will do the job better — but, oh how I love tools. — Denny
Jennifer, I am a tool person — I love the feel of tools in my hand. Once upon a time, my wife accused me of stroking a tool while in a store, contemplating its purchase. Jenny and I were both previously married, so early on she had a new appreciation for my “fixation.” She made the comment that my tools fit in my hands — they become an extension of me. In her family, and first marriage, tools were awkward and clumsy in the hands of her dad, husband and brother. That said, as a Baby Boomer, I have accumulated enough tools over the years to open my own hardware store. I have often said if I still had the money I have spent on tools, my wife would have a really nice house in an exclusive neighborhood. My fetish not only includes automotive tools, but woodworking and yard tools as well. My neighbors sometimes look at me as the local United Rentals yard. To get to the point, the advice my dad gave me many, many years ago still holds true: First: Don’t buy cheap tools. They will let you down and not accomplish what you need to do. Buy the best you quality tools can afford and you’ll only have to buy them once. Second: Learn the proper way to use your tools and use them the way they were designed to be used. Weighing The Options The topic of TPMS continues to be an often asked about one. This article delves into the background on some popular sensors, servicing them and the tools that make the job a lot easier.
A
s a former technician who has dealt with the incredibly wide range and variety of OE tire pressure sensors that shops need to cover, using one of the newest aftermarket systems that can cover the vast majority of the market with only a few sensors just makes a lot of sense to me. Especially now that the non-replaceable batteries on many first-generation sensors are beginning to fail in ever-larger numbers, it’s going to be more important than ever to have an easy way to replace sensors without having to keep large inventories on
hand or searching suppliers for just the right sensor for an impatient customer. But which solution is right for your shop? Let’s take a look at what’s available. Current OE replacement solutions fall into one of two categories: preprogrammed and programmable. Pre-programmed sensors are essentially OE-like sensors with many vehicle protocols built-in, so that a few SKUs can cover most applications. The major advantage of pre-programmed sensors is that new tools or procedures are unnecessary. The standard relearn procedures are followed as if it was a true OE sensor. Programmable sensors are blank until written over with the correct vehicle data, which requires an extra programming tool. The advantage here is

TPMS that although two or three sensors are initially required by either type to cover the 315 Mhz and 433 Mhz radio bands, programmable systems will update faster and require fewer SKUs in the long term. (Editor’s note: Programmable sensors can actually be broken down even further, and we will cover this in an upcoming issue.)
Dill Air Controls Redi-Sensor: Dill Air Control’s Redi-Sensor solution achieves 92% coverage with four pre-programmed SKUs. Brian Rigney, general manager at Dill Air Controls, notes that, “Redi-Sensor is made with OE components and tested to OE standards,” including high-quality anodized alloy to resist corrosion. “The valve stem can be removed. Also, the valve stem is adjustable, meaning it can fit a wide variety of OE and aftermarket wheels. This is a very important feature. We also offer a rubber valve option.” Presently, Dill offers four SKUs, with a sensorfinding application at www.dillvalves.com: • 7001HP – 315 Mhz, covering GM, Chrysler,
Ford, Nissan Infiniti, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Mazda and more. • 7002 – 315 Mhz, covering Asian vehicles not on 7001HP. • 7003 – 315 Mhz, covering newer Asian vehicles, Audi, Mercedes, VW and more. • 7004 – 433 Mhz, covering Volvo, Chrysler and Dodge. • 7001HPR – The same as 7001HP, but with a snap-in rubber valve. Future modules are in the works to expand coverage still further, Rigney says. “The goal is to effectively group the remaining protocols plus any new sensor designs,” he says.
Oro-Tek: Oro-Tek’s solution is three pre-programmed sensors that together cover 90% of the market. Oro-Tek’s sensors have a replaceable metal valve stem on a twopiece design that allows the sensor to be adjusted laterally to fit the wheel’s drop well. TPMS SKUs include: • OTI-001 – 315 Mhz, covering 70% of the total vehicle market. • OTI-002 – 433 Mhz including 2006-’12 BMW. • OTI-003 – 315 Mhz, covering most Asian imports.
Myers Sens.it: Developed by Alligator Ventilfabrik and distributed by Myers Tire Supply, the Sens.it uses three programmable SKUs to achieve 95% vehicle coverage. A tech can enter the VIN or the sensor serial number into a web application, and sensor data is downloaded and written to the sensor by the specialized Alligator tool. The web application is updated constantly with no annual update fees, and can track statistics for models serviced. A coverage list is available at web.alligator-sensit.com. Stuart Ferguson, president of Alligator North America, says, “We believe that our solution makes
the most sense because it provides the best coverage with the lowest logical inventory. Most claims from our competitors regarding vehicle coverage relate only to the software availability, but do not include the mechanical fit to the vehicle. The fit to the vehicle includes valve type (rubber snap-in and metal clamp-in) and color – black, silver, grey etc. “Since we have been selling both a snap-in solution and a metal stem solution for the past three years, our records show 40% of TPMS services are carried out using a snap-in and 60% using a metal stem part. If a supplier states that they have 90% coverage, but only offer a metal stem part, then the actual coverage is really closer to 50%. Also, to fit all wheel rim profiles (OE and replacement), the metal valve has to have an adjustable angle.” Sens.it 315 Mhz sensors are currently available with rubber or metal valve stems, while the 433 Mhz sensors are only available with metal stems. Alligator uses high-grade anodized aluminum, “the same grade as is used on submarine periscopes” in its metal stems to resist corrosion, as well as an interesting plastic washer integrated with the valve stem to prevent metal-to-metal contact. The sensors are compatible with all standard TPMS tools. Ferguson notes, “As part of our ongoing development, we have been testing the valve portion of competitive parts to normal OE standards. Of greatest concern are the new rubber snap-in products, which were introduced to the market this year. These parts failed when subjected to basic OE tests, such as high speed and deflection tests. While most rubber valve stems look the same, there is a huge difference in materials, material properties and engineering that go into these. Much of the costsaving associated with the ‘cheaper’ products is achieved by cutting corners that should not be cut.”
Schrader / Bartec EZ-Sensor: Developed by Schrader and Bartec, the EZ-Sensor consists of two programmable sensors that together cover more than 85% of the market. The 315 Mhz and 433 Mhz Schrader sensors are blank until cloned by a special TPMS tool, which writes the proper vehicle information. Sensors can be rewritten multiple times, and will follow relearn procedures with standard TPMS tools once cloned. The EZ-Sensor features a two-part design with a rubber snap-in valve stem that can be easily removed and replaced, eliminating the corrosion issues suffered by metal stems. TPMS does offer sensors with metal valve stems as well. More information can be found at www.ez-sensor.com. Bartec updates its vehicle database quarterly for an annual fee. Paul Wise, director of product management and marketing at Schrader, says, “As new vehicles with new vehicle protocols enter the market, (techs) can simply download new software onto their existing hand-held tool. For the aftermarket, this results in an infinitely scalable solution, minimizing the need for additional inventory and ensuring that repair centers can meet the TPMS needs of virtually any vehicle.”
Programming Tools Cloning can be performed by one of the many tools now available: Schrader’s 21220, 21230 and 21240 TPMS tools can copy broken sensors or retrieve vehicle information from the database and clone to an EZ-Sensor. They have scan, relearn and OBD functionality, and can
download and print sensor audit information via a computer connection. Bartec’s Tech200 and Tech300 lines are able to copy and write EZ-Sensors in addition to being fullfunctioned scan and relearn tools. The Bartec TPMS pad connects to a desktop or laptop and makes cloning sensors as easy as laying the broken sensor on the pad to read it, then laying the blank sensor on the pad to write it. Or, the software can look up sensor information by make or VIN. It’s the Bartec Tech400 and Tech500 tools that take the next step forward. The Tech400 can clone both EZ-Sensors and Myers’ Sens.it and other sensors by Echlin and Standard Motor Products. The Tech500 can reprogram all those sensors and many more, including sensors from 31 Inc., Orange Electronics, ITM, Pilot TPMS and Huf. It also stores a database of relearn procedures onboard, tests keyless entry transmitters, records printable audit reports, allows OBD access and can be updated via wireless or Bluetooth. Scot Holloway, CEO and general manager at Bartec, told me, “As the market evolved, it was clear that other sensors were emerging, and our customers were looking for options and flexibility. As a result, we have worked very hard to make our tool transparent to the sensor choice. We do not want our tool to be a barrier for our customer’s business decisions. “Does this strategy change the game? Absolutely,” he says. “Now the installer/technician has options and flexibility in choosing a replacement sensor, how much inventory to keep and where they can purchase. If (November’s) SEMA Show was an indicator (at least three new aftermarket sensors emerged) there will be many more choices for aftermarket sensors. Which means we have our work cut out for us keeping up with changing OE specifications and the proliferation of aftermarket alternatives.” The variety of options available out in the aftermarket can be confusing, but they also provide some flexibility for shops with different needs. Smaller shops might opt for the lower entry cost of pre-programmed sensors, while larger shops might look for the higher-volume, long-term flexibility and sheer geek-tech flashiness of programmable systems. And while it’s always good to have some choices, the companies involved just keep on leaping ahead, opening up ever newer and more interesting options. TS

Analyzing the Cylinder Pressure Waveform from a Running Engine, Part 2 In Part 1 of this Maximizing Tools series, we discussed an alternative approach to diagnosing an engine using the pressure waveforms from an in-cylinder pressure transducer. Part 2 continues our discussion in more detail, analyzing the Valve Timing and Ignition Timing tabs on the waveforms. As can be seen in Figures 1 and 1a, with late cam timing, the red and green traces — showing exhaust and intake gas volume, respectively — overlap for the first approximately 20-30° of crankshaft rotation away from TDC.

If the camshaft is installed one tooth early, the valve timing is advanced. This is the same as early opening and closing of the valves. In Figures 2 and 3, that is shown as an offset of the closing of the intake valve to the right, and opening of the intake valve to the left. Again, the characteristic points are moving away from each other approximately 30°.
The waveform distortion shown in Figure 3, where the valves are overlapping, is typical for advanced valve timing. The red and green traces do not overlap each other as they did with late valve timing and they have characteristic angles. On engines equipped with a chain-driven camshaft, the shift of the opening and closing valves becomes larger than on engines equipped with a timing belt. We have shown that valve timing can be quickly and accurately analyzed and verified using the method described.

MAXIMIZING TOOLS as the “Quantity” tab does, but shown in relation to the angle of the crankshaft. The amount of gas in the cylinder is expressed as the distance from the center of the diagram. The trace’s distance from the center is a visual representation of the amount of gas in the cylinder. Figure 4, which is a polar diagram, shows the amount of gas in the cylinder depending on the angle of the crankshaft and the stroke of the tested cylinder. The A marker shows where the intake valve is closed, and the B marker shows when the exhaust valve begins to open. Note that the marker locations are symmetrical relative to the vertical line. Figure 5 on page 18 is a zoomed in capture showing
more detail on the center of the diagram from a typical engine in good working order. If the timing belt or chain is installed one tooth late on engines equipped with a single camshaft, the valve timing for both intake and exhaust will be late. On the polar diagram, this shows as a rotation of the valve phase diagram clockwise about 15° (if there’s a timing belt; more if there’s a chain). The intake valve closing and the exhaust valve opening are no longer symmetrical relative to the center line or TDC. This asymmetry is shown in Figure 6 on page 18. The late valve timing also manifests as a distortion in the center of the diagram, as shown in the zoomed-in diagram in Figure 7 on page 18.

The first phase of the distortion in Figure 7 occurs because the piston, after passing TDC in the cylinder, starts to create low pressure in the cylinder and gases will flow from the exhaust manifold through the still-open exhaust valve. The second part of the distortion occurs because the piston is already on its way down in the cylinder when the intake valve opens. If the timing belt or chain is installed a tooth early, the valve timing will be advanced and the polar diagram will again be asymmetrical. Under this condition, the diagram will be rotated counterclockwise. The valve phases shown in Figure 8 will again be asymmetrical relatively to the horizontal or TDC line. Figure 9, which is a zoomed in part of Figure 8, shows distortion in the center. Note that the distortion looks different from what it does with late valve timing. The distortion of the red trace on the diagram in Figure 9 is due to gases from the cylinder flowing into the intake manifold because the intake valve opens too early. As is shown, the “Valve timing” and the “Quantity” tabs can both be used to determine and diagnose valve timing issues. Which one to use is simply a matter of personal preference. With some practice, these diagrams can be used with variable valve timing as well. If the diagram from an engine in good working order is known, variations due to timing belt, chain or cam phasers are readily apparent in the waveforms.

construct an ignition timing diagram, as shown in Figure 10 on page 20. In Figure 10, colors are used to signify the load on the engine with green being the lowest engine load and red the highest. Green is 20% load and red is 90% load. The higher the load, the warmer the color. Normal operation of the ignition timing is shown in the diagram. As the engine rpm increases, so does the ignition timing. This is what used to be called centrifugal advance. On the diagram, this advance is shown as an increase in the graph height as we move toward higher rpm (to the right). Normal operation also implies that the ignition timing will vary with load on the engine. With increasing cylinder pressure, also known as decreasing manifold vacuum, the ignition timing should delay, so the spark occurs later. The opposite is also true; with decreasing cylinder pressure, also known as increased manifold vacuum, the ignition should occur earlier, or advanced. Because the ignition is delayed with increased load, the red trace, which signifies high load, is located lower in the diagram than the green. The shaded areas signify where the ignition timing will normally occur. Events outside the shaded areas indicate malfunction. When the engine in a modern vehicle is overrunning, as happens when you abruptly release the accelerator pedal or when the vehicle is decelerating, for example going downhill, the fuel supply is interrupted. Because there is no fuel supply in this mode, the ignition timing does not affect to the engine performance, so the corresponding traces on the diagram in this tab are not displayed by default. They can be turned on manually as is shown in Figure 11 on page 20, and will display as blue traces. Blue signifies very little load. Note that the ignition timing is very late unless the engine is at very high rpm. This can be verified and proven with a timing light, if needed. Because the operating conditions are outside normal range (overrunning), the blue trace is slightly below what is considered normal range. If there is a control or adjustment problem, the timing traces will appear outside the shaded areas, as is shown in Figure 12. In this example, the ignition timing is very late and does not adjust with either rpm or load. The engine will have very low power. This problem was caused by a faulty engine control unit. TS

Good Guys Vs. Bad Guys The Story of U0100 This article will document Code U0100 — Lost Communication with the ECM/PCM. In the world of automotive module-to-module communication, it can mimic a good guy/bad guy situation — the good guy has made an attempt to communicate with the bad guy and the bad guy does not respond. The good guy will then report to whoever will listen via a U-code that the bad guy is not talking. So keep in mind that the module storing the U-code is in many cases the good guy. This issue’s diagnostic journey begins with a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country. The vehicle has been taken in for an emission test and has failed to communicate with the state’s equipment. Not by any means is the failure to communicate issue unique, however, this vehicle has a unique signature to it in terms of what it does when it attempts to communicate: the wipers will sweep once across the windshield and the headlamps will illuminate once and then turn off. In many cases, but not all, the comment “U-code, not me code” holds true. This vehicle was scanned using several generic scan tools as well as the manufacturer’s scan tool. We were able to obtain scan data with both tools, but keep in mind that in order to pass the emissions test, the vehicle must pass on
the state’s equipment. I will attempt with the following pictorials to outline the series of events as they unfolded. The first pictorial, Figure 1, shows the vehicle’s reaction to being scanned.

PULLING CODES PCM as well as other modules (ABS, ORC, WCM, etc.), which reside on CAN C. A series of other modules (CCN, HVAC, radio, etc.) are on the CAN B line. The WiTECH scan tool used by the Chrysler dealer was employed to look at the system. The topology screen in Figure 4 shows a layout of the modules for this vehicle, prior to looking at codes. The codes were

You can see the wipers doing a sweep across the windshield. The headlamps also illuminated once. The next step was to try a generic scan tool (Escan) to see if we could communicate with this vehicle. Figures 2 and 3 show that we were able to communicate and that all monitors ran and passed. The communication architecture of this vehicle is quite interesting. There is a central gateway called the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) that the scan tool must first go through in order to speak to the

PULLING CODES then reviewed and the system showed we had a series issues with communication per the PCM. They are rare, but do exist. of U-codes, see Figure 5 on page 33, which denotes We attempted to repair the CAN B line to see if this these codes. It appears that the WCM (wireless control module) is would allow us to communicate with the PCM. A the one setting the codes that we have the most interest in. The two codes are U0100 (Lost Communication with ECM/PCM) and U0001 (CAN C issue). This information implies that there may be a communication issue with the CAN C line causing us not to be able to communicate with the PCM. It’s now time to use our PicoScope to determine where the fault maybe hiding. The following pictorials, Figures 6-9, show what was witnessed on this vehicle. The CAN C line appears to be fine, but the CAN B line has an issue. Note for reference that there were several codes indicating an issue with CAN B as well. The PicoScope was used to look at CAN C, Diagnostic CAN C and CAN B. The only one that did not pass the test was CAN B as shown in Figure 7. short time later, the vehicle failed to communicate at all and a topology screen now showed that the TIPM was not talking. The TIPM was replaced as a result of this. After the TIPM was replaced, the vehicle was scanned again and it showed that there was still an issue with the CAN B line. All of the modules were
taken off the bus and the CAN B line was checked at the TIPM with the communication line disconnected from the TIPM. The CAN B line was still at fault. In our final pictorial, Figure 9, we attempted to make a final analysis of this failure, the CAN B+ line appears to be riding on another signal. This vehicle was still under warranty by the Chrysler dealer. The dealership was backed up and could not look at the vehicle in a timely manner to have it ready for emissions testing. This is how our shop got involved. The vehicle was returned to the dealer at the customer’s request as the customer wanted the vehicle repaired under warranty, but after two weeks of reviewing this issue, the dealership threw in the towel. They stated they could not find anything wrong. As a final note in terms of research, I ran a Carfax on this vehicle, which showed a new wiring harness and PCM were replaced on this vehicle before it was sold new in 2010. I find these facts interesting, but it still left our case unsolved. This Pulling Codes case has not been resolved. TS
