EDITOR’SNOTES Smartphone as a Tool? App-solutely! n the December 2012 issue of TechShop, we discussed using your smartphone as a shop tool (“There’s An App for That”). We reached out to you, our readers, through the magazine, Facebook and Twitter for suggestions on which apps you’re using in the shop. Many readers wrote with great suggestions and many wrote eagerly looking forward to our list. The most popular app mentioned was Torque Pro, which I found also happens to be a popular one with iATN members. Another reader, “Andy Mechanic,” wrote, “For revolutions or other noise-making components that increase with speed, you can find a Sound Spectrum Analysis app to see it on a screen, and watch the noise increase with speed. I am using this one for my Droid: SpectralView analyzer. I am using the demo version and it is OK, but the Apple ones are best and the bought apps are much better and can save data too!” Stephanie Dillon, the service writer at Prestige Auto Works, in Sacramento, CA, writes, “My favorite free app that I use every single time a new car comes in is the VIN Hunter Pro. I use my iPhone to scan (or type) the VIN barcode. It instantly gives me the vehicle information. There is a field to fill in the exact mileage and a notes field that is convenient for adding the license plate. You can even take a picture for that vehicle. You can e-mail the info to yourself if needed. You can keep the vehicles in a list or delete them when you don’t want them. There are other similar apps I’ve tried, but this one is still my favorite for the job. “We also have the GoPoint OBD II plug-in reader and the app on our iPhones,” Stephanie continues. “For only about $100 you can get the OBD II on a cord that plugs into the vehicle and iPhone. You can quickly see the check engine light codes and pending codes, as well as some live data. It’s handy to keep in the car for use when we are not at the shop with our regular tools.”

Other responses were: • Shop Boss Pro for a labor and estimating guide, scheduling, customer notifications, vehicle information and shop management. • Use the WORLDPAC app to scan VIN bar codes with an Android device. The VIN is instantly transmitted to speedDIAL. • With the Headlight app by Sylvania, you can find part numbers for automotive replacement bulbs for every make and model between years 1958 and 2012. • Bosch offers a wide variety of free apps for tools, finding parts and more. • The NaviGates mobile app enables users to search for belt routing diagrams and Gates parts by VIN. • Snap-on’s catalog app lets you browse and order tools with the tap of the screen. • Wunderlist helps you manage your daily to-do lists. • TransTec’s Transmission-by-Vehicle iPhone app was developed specifically to eliminate confusion over look-alike transmissions, identifying transmissions by vehicle make, model, year and engine. • Hunter’s TouchRemote allows iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users to enjoy full wireless remote operation of WinAlign alignment sys-

And to give a plug to one of our own Babcox Media/AVI apps, we offer an ASE Test Prep app.

The ASE Test Prep app will help you “ace the ASE.” With this study app, technicians can learn from ASE-certified master technicians, watch training videos and take adva n t a g e o f o u r p r a c t i c e t e s t s packed with ASE-style questions. It’s available in the iOS and Android app stores. Be sure to watch for updates at avitest prep.com/app/. There always will be something new and exciting coming out. If you find an app you particularly l i k e, s h o o t m e a n e - m a i l a t jclements@babcox.com and I’ll share it with our readers. As for your customers, are they using apps to find and connect with auto repair facilities? See page 25 of the News section for a recent study regarding customers’ use of QR codes and mobile apps. The Variables of Cam Timing No Code Analysis This article will document a No Code Analysis for a Variable Cam Timing (VCT) Issue; this is a story that involves multiple misfire issues due to cam timing.

O

ur diagnostic journey this month begins with a 2005 Ford F-150 Super Duty. Note: Before starting your diagnosis, you should first check the oil level and quality for the VCT system. There are also very good websites that provide known-good waveform libraries. Contact me at carlton196100@yahoo.com and I will provide additional information on those sites.

Concern: The engine starts and runs. Idle quality is poor, and cylinders 1, 2, 3 and 4 misfire. There are no VCT codes. Our subject vehicle has a 5.4L engine with three valves per cylinder. The engine starts and runs; the idle quality is very poor; and cylinders 2, 3 and 4 have misfire activity. The Ford IDS scan tool is used to begin a mechanical analysis of the system. The activity in Figure 1 was noted. The power balance option on the IDS shows we have misfire activity on cylinders 3, 2 and 4; see Figure 2. The test shows that cylinder 1 would also misfire at times. An additional test is performed using the relative compression test option and it also confirms the same as the previous test. The fuel trims were reviewed and it showed the

mission gear in reverse (automatic transmission). The line pressures for the transmission will be higher by performing the test in this manner. The ultimate goal of this

test is to be able to see the actual cam phasing occur under a load condition. When the brake torque test was performed, the VCTadv PID shows that the cams are being

total fuel trim correction on bank 1 to be -4.76%, the total fuel trim correction on bank 2 is 25.21%. We would like to see less than +/-10% on both banks.

Data Graphing The first dynamic to perform on this engine family is an idle speed test. We would like the cam angles (no phasing) to be in a range of +/2 degrees at idle. The idle test shows that the cam phasing data is within the proper range. Figure 3 shows the following values: VCTadv1 = 0.37 degrees, VCTadv2 = 0-.75 degrees, VCTadverr1 = -0.37 degrees and VCTadverr2 = 0.75 degrees (idle speed values appear to be normal). The second dynamic test is the brake torque test with the trans-

Ford Variable Cam Timing with John Thornton Learn how the system works and how to diagnose it efficiently. Ford was the first manufacturer to incorporate dual-equal variable cam timing (VCT) and this system is used on many of the Ford models on the road today. In this program, John Thornton explains what variable cam timing is all about, why it is needed and how the system operates. This class provides hands-on testing using a scanner and lab scope. John explains how the VCT solenoid works and covers VCT trouble codes. He shows you how to take on the difficult task of checking cam timing. John also provides details on the dreaded P1381 and P1383 codes and presents a no-start case study. This program is full of information you need to know and great tips to help you tackle these systems.

LIFTS

By TechShop magazine staff

If you’ve been in this business long enough, you’ve heard stories or have seen photos on the Internet of lifts that have given way, hurling a vehicle to the concrete shop floor. Too many times technicians are hurt in these scenarios. Every time it happens is going to cost the shop more than it saved by buying a cheap lift.

❝A lift is a

Needless to say, it’s a shop owner’s responsibility to keep the shop’s lifts at the highest possible safety level. While safety is a huge factor in the buying process, there are many other features and benefits that need to be considered as well. With so many options to choose from — two-post, four-post, scissor, in-ground, above ground — selecting the right vehicle lift for your shop can require a bit of research. Luckily, lifts continue to improve and there are many features to look for that will enhance ease-of-use for your technicians, will save time and boost efficiency. Although you’re probably familiar with them, if you want a quick look at the different types of lifts

poor place to save money.

LIFTS most, and the types of jobs for which you’ll be needing the lift. Will you be using the lift mostly for brake work or do you need it for LOFs? Will it raise high enough for you/techs to stand underneath

that are available, visit the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI)’s site at autolift.org/types.php. When it comes time to buy a new lift, areas to keep in mind include: ample space around the wheel wells and sides of a vehicle; adequate surface contact area; easy-touse lock releases; and arm restraints that engage when the vehicle is lifted. Do you need the lift to handle a wide variety of vehicles? Look for ones with capacities that suit the individual needs of your shop — from cars, vans and trucks to light- and mediumduty commercial vehicles. This actually may be a good place to start your research. Go back through your records and survey which types of vehicles you service

comfortably? Or, do you have to accommodate a low ceiling?

Considerations With the range of options out there, there’s so much to consider before

LIFTS talking to your local lift distributor. Here are a few things to think about before making that call. Are you tired of waiting for a slow lift to rise? Some new models are speedier than ever. Now there are lifts that take less than 30 seconds to go up and 20 seconds to go down. That can add up to significant time savings, especially for high-volume shops. Are you limited by a leased facility? Some types of lifts, such as some flush-mounted scissor lifts, require few floor modifications. Or, are you limited by floor space? Certain lift designs, like in-ground

lifts, can allow the shop to increase the number of service bays within your existing space, thus increasing your opportunity for even greater revenue. Is there a service your customers are requiring that you can’t perform with your current lifts? An iATN contributor recommended considering if the lift manufacturer still produces replacement parts for their lifts, “so you will never run into obsolete part issues such as arm pivot pins, etc.”

considering, a lift distributor can help you make the most appropriate selection. It’s the distributor’s job to educate the customer on which type of lift is suitable for the shop’s needs. A shop owner should be able to rely heavily on his manufacturer and distributor for support in shop layout and design as it relates to selection and configuration of shop floor space for the greatest efficiency with the right lift equipment.

Highly Recommended No matter what type of lift you’re

A Few Questions To Ask About Your Auto Lift Before You Make a Purchase Some questions Automotive Service Equipment recommends you should ask when purchasing an auto lift include: • Was the lift manufactured in a facility that is ISO-9001 compliant? • Does the lift offer customer-driven features and designs that were developed by accomplished engineers? • Do the lifts undergo extensive testing and quality control procedures before they are put on the market? • Are the lifts put together with computerized machines and certified welders within multi-axis machine centers?

The reality is that purchasing a car lift is a hefty investment. Therefore, you want to be certain the lift you purchase has undergone extensive testing to ensure its quality and safety. After all, you will be spending time beneath the auto lift and the car it is holding, which means a poor-quality lift can actually put your life at risk. In the end, purchasing the perfect auto lift means taking your time to research your options and to learn as much as you can about the products that are available. In doing so, you will be able to weigh the pros and cons of each — and you will be certain to select a lift that suits your budget as well as your needs. Your Safety Is Riding On It! The Automotive Lift Institute, Inc. (ALI) announces the availability of the 2013 edition of ALI’s Vehicle Lifting Points For Frame Engaging Lifts. This updated guide is a quickreference single-source manual for lifting point information as recommended by the vehicle manufacturers. The 60-page Lifting Point Guide (LP-G) for domestic and imported cars and light trucks uses more than 200 undercarriage images to cover the most recent 23 model years. For this new edition, the 2013 model year vehicles were added, some older images were revised, and additional cautionary notes were provided in an effort to clarify pick-up point locations for shop owners, technicians and other LP-Guide users. Visit ALI’s website autolift.org to order this updated guide or for information on other safety materials and standards sponsored by the lift manufacturers who support ALI’s mission of promoting the safe design, construction, installation and use of automotive lift products.

LIFTS If you’re opening a new location or re-designing your shop layout, ask your lift distributors or local representatives if they offer customized layout plans. The rep should be able to help you with product selection as well as provide vehicle turning radius information and traffic flow analysis. Look for a manufacturer that has a successful track record in product quality, service and support. Since maximizing uptime is such a concern to profitability, being able to have reliable lifts that can be installed and serviced, is paramount.

Visit TechShop’s Buyer’s Guide for a list of lift manufacturers: TechShopMag.com/www/buyersguide An Elevated Outlook Keep in mind your plans for the shop’s future as well. You don’t want your shop to get stuck in a situation where your lifts are holding you back from bringing in service to your facility. You’ll want to be proactive investing properly in lift products that can help you increase your shop’s service capacity. Look for a lift that allows expansion to all types of vehicles (i.e., fleet, RVs, loaded utility trucks, plumbers’ vans), and upgrading your equipment to handle newer models. Assessing your shop’s needs and formulating a plan, both for today

and for the future will help you build a platform for success. And, last but certainly not least, a quote from owners/techs that is seen on many iATN posts: “Whatever you go with, make sure it’s ALI certified.” ALI administers the only nationally recognized safety standard for vehicle lifts. There is a directory of certified lifts at ali-directory.org. Note: The Tool & Equipment Forum on iATN offers a variety of recommendations from shop owners and techs on specific types and brands of lifts. Visit iATN.net. TS

The goal is to help other shops employ the Internet as a powerful tool and

show them how fellow shop owners use the Web to improve productivity, enhance marketing programs and, ultimately, increase their businesses’ bottom lines. The entire feature, with more in-depth information about each shop’s site, is available online at www.AutoInc.org.

NEWS New Research on QR Codes and Mobile Apps: What Consumers Want DMEautomotive (DMEa), a science-based automotive marketing company, recently released new survey findings on how — and how much — auto service customers are interacting with QR codes and mobile apps. The data also reveals which content and functionality customers most desire from a service center offering. With roughly half of all Americans now toting a smartphone, mobile marketing by dealerships and auto service providers is rightfully surging. And DMEa’s findings reveal some significant mobile marketing opportunities for the service industry, particularly with their customers’ high, overall rates of mobile app usage (44%), but with relatively few of them now using a dealer or service provider app (10%). “Given the massive adoption of smartphones, it’s no wonder that mobile apps and QR codes are very hot topics in automotive marketing,” said Doug Van Sach, vice president of Strategy & Analytics at DMEautomotive. “But our survey reveals that businesses that adopt cutting-edge technologies and then feed people irrelevant sales messages, or generic product/business info, are wasting the customer’s time and money. People demand real, tangible value, like coupons and discounts, and functionality that will make their lives easier, like instant online appointment scheduling and timely service reminders.” Findings are based on a national

survey of 2,000+ U.S. vehicle owners conducted by DMEa’s Strategy & Analytics division. QR Codes Sending People to Non-Actionable and Sales-y Con-

tent: Less than a fifth of service customers have scanned a QR code. And that modest 18% reported to DMEa on where these “scans” took Continues on page 38

NEWS Continued from page 25

them (i.e., how they interacted with QR codes) in the last year. Notably, the top two “places” consumers are being directed to via QR codes are product info and links to a webpage. These are typically static, “not much in it for me” destinations, which can run the risk of quickly losing a customer’s attention. Auto service customers also reported on what they actually most desire from service provider QR codes: coupons/discounts, current store promotions and the ability to schedule online appointments. These top three demands ranked higher than all other attributes, including “connecting to provider’s website” or getting “general automotive/maintenance info.” Mobile Apps – Higher, Intense Usage: More than twice as many service customers (44%) use mobile apps than scan QR codes (18%). And that app usage number jumps to 74% for the tech-obsessed 18-34 age demographic. Furthermore, service customers using apps use them intensely, with two in three turning to them at least once daily. This is good news for service businesses because, compared to QR Codes, which are, by nature, scan and go, mobile apps enable them to forge daily, always-there customer connections. Disconnect: High Consumer App Adoption, Low Service App Penetration: Despite the fact that nearly half of all service customers are now app users (a figure that will grow explosively), only 10% of survey respondents reported that they currently have a dealer/service provider app. Current Service App Interactions: These one-in-10 service customers that now use a dealer/service center app reported on how they most interact with it. This data, shining some light on what features they find most useful, provides one window into what service app providers should most include in their offerings. For service-app-using customers, the functions that they interact with the most (coupons, dealer incen-

tives, service reminders, etc.) — and the least (general car model/maintenance/financing info, or connecting to provider’s website) — again clearly illustrate that consumers demand real, tangible value, and actionable info and tools that make their lives easier. The Features That Would Make Them the “Appiest”: The “wish list” of the app-less 90% of service customers provides an even more accurate window into the features consumers most desire in a service provider app. The top 5 are: 1) coupons, 2) online appointment scheduling, 3) service reminders, 4) recall alerts and 5) vehicle maintenance histories. It’s interesting to note the very high percentage of respondents that report that they would embrace these key features if their dealer/service center offered them in an app. The data clearly indicates that far more customers would adopt service apps if they integrated the functionality people demand. Also note: many of the mostwanted features (i.e., service reminders, vehicle maintenance histories, etc.) require that the app be fully integrated into the business’ DMS. And since DMS-app integration allows service providers to send the right messages/offers about the right vehicles at the right time, it makes implementing these features a major “win” for both customer and business. “Wave one with any new technology is adoption, and wave two is where businesses get it right, aligning their offerings with what consumers actually demand,” said Van Sach. “While far more service businesses have jumped into QR codes than mobile apps, the former is essentially just a ‘door’ sending people to short-lived, and hopefully engaging, information. But mobile apps, which are always in that customer’s pocket or purse, uniquely forge long-term, hyper-close customer connections. They’re the ‘big house’ a business can build their service relationships on, but only if they build that house right.” TS
