P E T I T CO L L AG E S TAC K I N G TOY $ 2 4
INSIDE LOOK: (On Right) A behind the scenes look at our spring cover shoot with Tia Mowry. (From Top) I can’t wait to wear this jacket everywhere I go this spring. My Penelope Plum turned one last month and I can’t believe how fast time has flown— it’s true what they say!
16
Can you believe spring is here again? It’s so nice to hear the birds chirping and have the sun shine a little longer— not to mention, say goodbye to my big, fluffy parka I’ve been married to for the last few months. This issue, much like the weather, feels like a fresh, new start for 2018 and the pages are packed full with powerful parents, their experiences, and positive advice that will keep you inspired all year long. And let’s talk about that cover! We’re so thrilled to welcome Tia Mowry (I know you were a Sister Sister fan like I was!)
who could not look more radiant as she awaits the arrival of her second baby— a girl! We talked her greatest worry of motherhood, how she and her husband choose baby names, and how this pregnancy is different from her first. We’re also giving you a glimpse into the lives (and homes!) of moms like Eden Grinshpan, Rachel Parcell, Maya Brenner, and many more! I’m looking forward to another great year of Mini Magazine— thanks for coming along!

When Katerina Schneider was four months pregnant with her daughter, she found herself unable to recognize any of the ingredients in her prenatal vitamins. Determined to reinvent the concept of the vitamin from the ground up, this soon-to-be mom of two founded Ritual, a wave-making start-up with a clean multivitamin including the nine essential nutrients women actually need.

BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IS H A R D, B U T B E I N G A M OT H E R IS EVEN HARDER. Tell us what inspired you to create Ritual. How did it all begin?
MINI |
I started Ritual when I was four months pregnant. I cared more than ever what I was putting in and on my body. I got rid of everything in our house—deodorant, toothpaste, sunscreen, etc. But when it came to the vitamin I had been taking every day, I felt like it was a black box. I quickly realized it contained ingredients that were unproven, in dosages that were excessive and it was actually missing a lot of nutrients I needed for my pregnancy. I had my work cut out for me. So I left my cushy job and decided to start a company that was going to reinvent the vitamin industry., all while being pregnant. I hired one of the leading scientists in the industry and we literally spent a year just researching womens diets today (not 50 years ago with which most vitamins are formulated). We realized that women were actually getting a lot of nutrients from their diets alone and that most multivitamins were kind of B.S. We identified nine essential nutrients that all women could use more of (think folate, omega-3s, D3, K2MK7). We searched the world for the best forms that were vegan, gluten free, non gmo, that had clinical studies and

research and bypassed any gene variations. It was shocking to me that over 1/3 of women had a gene variation where they couldn’t properly utilize folic acid (which was in over 90% of prenatals and multivitamins!). No one, not even most doctors, were talking about this. So we decided to create a product that accounted for something so important. What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?
MINI |
The greatest challenge is guilt. Not feeling guilty about not seeing your kids as much as you’d like or not working hard enough because you’re seeing your kids.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?
MINI |
Accepting help from others. For so long I was so antihelp, but I’ve come to embrace it.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?
MINI |
Being an entrepreneur is hard, but being a mother is even harder, I would say. It teaches you do deal with chaos all the time and not let it get to you.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
What do you think is the one thing about motherhood that no one really warns you about?
MINI |
Breastfeeding. Man, that was tough in the beginning. No one warns you about the changes you see in your body (your nipples) and how painful it is at first. Also, as a working mom, I pumped for a year and a half and that was one of the most stressful, selfless things I think I’ve ever done.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
As a mom and the founder of Ritual, can you give us an idea of what a typical work day looks like?
MINI |
I play with Tali and we have breakfast before I get into the office. Some days, I’ll get a workout in (Soul Cycle or pilates are what I’m into right now in my pregnancy) [before I get into] the office around 9. On Mondays, we have our weekly all-hands meeting where everyone shares what they are excited about for the week and someone on the team they are grateful for. Then I’ll meet with our scientific team to discuss formulations, sourcing, and studies. Some days, I’ll walk to grab some lunch with someone on the team or someone I’m interviewing. Other days, I’ll Postmates something yummy from Make Out Café (Matthew Kenney’s restaurant in Culver City). I have 1 to 2 bigger press interviews a week so,
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
I’ll try to fit that in. I’m also working on the design for our new office space which is incredible and I get to work with so many talented designers. I’ll meet with our copywriter to make sure our Instagram grid is looking and feeling great. Before I leave the office, I will also work with our COO on our financials and any material for our Board of Directors. It’s never a dull day. I typically get home around 6:30 or 7 to put Tali to bed and then I’m back online working on more creative things for the company like new packaging designs or product ideas. THE MOTHER OF VITAMINS Ritual is not your typical multivitamin— Here’s what they have above the others: 9 essential nutrients women lack the most Open-source ingredients, so you know where they came from Same bioavailable forms found in healthy foods
Non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten and Soy free, No synthetic fillers or colorants Natural mint-essence for the best taste Nothing you don’t need— most American women can do without common ingredients like Vitamin A, B Vitamins, and Trace Minerals
the name Tali out there and it seemed to stick. Tali’s name means ‘morning dew.’ Everyone asks us if it’s short for something, but we refused to name her Talia because we knew we would forever call her Tali. What is most important to you in raising your children?
MINI |
I was an immigrant when I moved to this country. My parents wanted to give me an opportunity that they never had and valued the importance of education. I never want to take that for granted when raising my kids.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
We want to know about your own wellness routine! What vitamins do you take yourself?

I only take [Ritual’s] Essential For Women. It was designed to be the only vitamin a woman needs.

What is your greatest joy of motherhood?
Experiencing life through the lens of another human being that is so open and excited about the world. It makes you really appreciate the more basic things.

MINI |
How did you decide on your children’s names?
My husband and I literally battled it out for months on a name. We were so stuck that we even both downloaded a naming app that matches you when you align on a name (like Tinder for baby names). Unfortunately, we still couldn’t align. I threw
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
How about diet? Is there anything you try to stick to or stay away from?
MINI |
I eat a plant-based diet. I’ve stayed away from dairy and meat for over ten years.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
And your skincare routine? What is that like right now?
MINI |
I’m obsessed with a company called True Botanicals. I have a four step routine with them that I love.

Let’s talk about your home. Do you have a favorite room?
MINI |
Our bedroom. I fell in love with our Environment bed once when I saw it in a showroom and I knew it was the bed that we had to have. We don’t have much else in our room (no TV, no electronics). I like the statement of just a bed in a bedroom and less clutter because in many ways you sleep better when you get rid of all of the noise and distraction.
KATERINA SCHNEIDER |
Where do you spend the most time in your home?
MINI |
I spend most of my free time at home outside walking with Tali in our neighborhood. It’s inspiring because she’s so curious about the simplest things—rocks, leaves—and it’s refreshing to see life from her perspective. It makes me more appreciative of where we live and the little things. I’m so busy day to day with numbers, growth, and data that it recharges me to play with her in nature.

Thank you for inviting us into your home! Tell us about the place! How would you describe your home

Our taste is eclectic. We love rugs and find any excuse to buy and fill our home up with them— Persian, Moroccan, etc. We spend a lot of time in our apartment and it feels very inviting and warm to me.
which give such an open, airy feeling to the apartment. The kitchen is the heart of the home and we spend a lot of time cooking together.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
Do you have a favorite room in your home?
MINI |
I would say my kitchen which is basically my kitchen/dining/ living room space. We have really tall ceilings
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
What are some of your favorite elements in your home?
MINI |
My rugs. The silk Persian rug in my entrance was one of the first big purchases that Ido and I made. We bought it in Jerusalem. I love the rug in our bedroom— it’s big and turquoise with hot pink accent colors. It’s made out of old saris (I love that). I am also really excited about the big, round mirror we just bought for our front hall. It’s such a statement piece and really opens the space up.

We’ve seen your Instagram sneak peeks! Give us the lowdown on DEZ. DEZ is going to be a fast casual, contemporary Middle-Eastern restaurant. The menu is very vegetarian friendly with some vegan options and a couple of meat dishes. The vibe of the space is Morocco meets LA. Lots of roasted veg, fresh salads, grilled meats, smoky spreads, and fluffy flatbreads.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?
MINI |
I would definitely say the guilt. I love my job so much and I am so excited for everything that is happening. It’s just hard being away from her and feeling like I am missing important moments.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
MINI |
What is your greatest parenting worry?
That my babe feels like I am not home enough. I know that’s ridiculous and not true, but I think all parents feel it.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?
MINI |
My husband is amazing. I really feel like the luckiest girl ever. My husband is the most caring and helpful person ever, I swear he can read my mind and jumps in exactly when I need him. My parents live in Toronto which is only an hour flight which is great! My mom jumps on a plane to hang whenever she can, and obviously, having a great nanny is key!
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
What has been your proudest career moment to date?
MINI |
Definitely watching Eden Eats for the first time on the Cooking Channel and also announcing the opening of DEZ.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?
MINI |
Ido and I are in bed at 9 most nights, and asleep by 10. Honestly, Ido and I talk about it all the time. We love being in bed early and snuggling. We watch a movie and have a glass of wine. It’s so fun.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
What do you think is the one thing no one really warns you about?
MINI |
with herself and her choices in life. What is your greatest joy of motherhood?
MINI |
Um, everything! After Ayv was born I kept saying that ”no one told me” breastfeeding was awful at the beginning. My nipples killed! The lack of sleep is actually scary— I swear I am still making up for the first six months and Ayv is almost a year old!
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
Watching Ayv grow, playing with other kids, developing her personality. It’s truly the most incredible thing watching a human being evolve.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
How would you describe your personal style?
MINI |
What is most important to you in raising your daughter?
MINI |
I’m a t-shirt and jeans girl. I love vintage Levi’s and I am always on the hunt for a good pair. When they fit well, everything looks good with them.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
I want her to feel safe, happy (laughter is very important to me), and confident. I really want her to feel confident
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
Where do you like to shop?
MINI |
I love Reformation for myself and Nature Baby for Ayv.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
Let’s talk beauty. What is your skincare routine like?
MINI |
Anything natural. I am trying to buy only natural products these days, so still trying to find a natural face wash that works well.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
Looking back to your first days as a mom, what advice would you give yourself?
MINI |
Stop watching the monitor! She is breathing and everything will be fine. Also... sleep! I’m a bad napper and couldn’t nap when she was napping. When I have my next baby, I will have to force myself to nap.
EDEN GRINSHPAN |
What are you looking forward to about raising your daughter in NYC?
MINI |
The different kinds of cuisines. I love how multicultural New York is and I can’t wait to show her all the different kinds of cuisines and foods.

It’s a small, cozy Spanish style home in Atwater Village. We have lived here for over seven years now and absolutely love the neighborhood. It’s filled with lots of young families and it’s flat, so you can easily walk to the local bakery or park with the kids. BARRETT PRENDERGAST |
Do you have a favorite room in your home?
MINI |
Most definitely the kitchen. It is one of the reasons we bought the house. The space gets incredible light, it feels airy, and is easy to move around in. It’s one of those open floor plans where the kitchen leads into the dining room and living room. People always want to hang out in the kitchen when they come over, so this allows for that. His room is all dinosaurs, cars, spaceships, balls. There is a wonderful open wood bookshelf we found on Craigslist years ago that is the focal point of the room. It is filled with toys and tons of books that he can easily reach and explore on his own. BARRETT PRENDERGAST |

time around you realize the baby needs very little in the beginning and will be in our room for the first few months. We plan on having a small bassinet in our room and a little changing station. How is the naming process going this time around? Have you decided?
MINI |
We had a few names we loved when we had Costa so we are using one of those for the new baby. My husband and I both love it, so it was pretty easy to decide. It is the middle name we can’t agree on at this point. BARRETT PRENDERGAST |
Is this pregnancy similar or different than your first?

It is a little bit of both. I feel the same as my first: same amount of morning sickness, carrying the baby in the same way. But the pregnancy is very different. The first time it’s all naps, prenatal yoga, and long walks thinking BARRETT PRENDERGAST |
I feel like I rarely have flowers in my house because we are always using up everything at work! What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

How do you manage to keep all of the plates spinning?
MINI |
MINI |
I always stay away from the normal pregnancy things like unpasteurized cheese, alcohol, raw fish, caffeine. I have been making lots of homemade granola and eating it with fresh berries and greek yogurt. It has been my go-to snack recently. BARRETT PRENDERGAST |
Valleybrink Road does the most beautiful florals. What are your favorite flowers to work with in the spring?
MINI |
The flower mart in spring is heaven. Right now, flowers like peonies and poppies are starting to appear which are always a favorite. To be honest,
I believe in taking one day at a time. It is the only way. Each day I try to do my best, and some days are better than others. BARRETT PRENDERGAST |
What is your greatest joy of motherhood?
MINI |
The bond and love between you and your child. It is like no other relationship I have ever had. It is a different kind of love than romantic love; it’s hard to explain. I always tell people, you can’t know until you have experienced it. BARRETT PRENDERGAST |

We’re thrilled to have you on our spring cover! Let’s dive right into your life as a mom. What does your morning routine look like?
TIA MOWRY |
My day starts with my son acting as my alarm clock at about 6:30 a.m. He wakes me up with kisses and hugs. One of my favorite things is cooking breakfast for my whole family, then Cree is off to school, and I am off to work on my YouTube show, “Tia Mowry’s Quick Fix.”

How much I worry! I wasn’t prepared for that.
TIA MOWRY |
MINI |
How has motherhood changed you?
I have developed more of an appreciation for life in general. I am constantly learning to appreciate the simple things in life.
MINI |
What is your greatest parenting worry?
Things that worry me the most are things that I can’t necessarily control. For example, how other people treat my child— bullying, what goes on at school while I am not there. Also, the impact of the social media generation scares me. There is so much out there on the web that we can’t control.
TIA MOWRY |
Tell us how you decided on your son’s name.
TIA MOWRY |
TIA MOWRY |
MINI |
My husband, Cory, actually came up with Cree’s name. It means “traveling warrior” and he definitely lives up to his name.
TIA MOWRY |
We do have a couple options we are deciding on. My husband is really good at coming up with meaningful names, so he will probably end up choosing her name too. What were your first thoughts when you found out you were pregnant with Baby #2?
MINI |
I was in denial to be honest with you. I probably went through 20 pregnancy tests. It was hard for me to get pregnant, so I wanted to be super positive before I got too excited. How about when you learned you were having a girl? Did you have a hunch or were completely surprised?
MINI |
How is the process of naming your daughter going this time around?
MINI |
I was completely surprised! For some reason, I didn’t think I would have a girl. I was shocked! I started crying because I knew how much my husband wanted to have a girl.
TIA MOWRY |
Is this pregnancy different or similar to your first?
I want her to see the world with an unconditional heart. How are you preparing Cree for a new baby in the house?
MINI |
MINI |
This one is different in the sense that I am really enjoying it more. I am enjoying it through the nausea, sleepless nights, the pain. I am not taking any of it for granted.
TIA MOWRY |
What do you hope to instill into your daughter?
MINI |
I want her to grow up knowing she is beautiful, no matter what anyone says, and
TIA MOWRY |
I think it is really important to involve him in every aspect. Listening to the baby’s heartbeat and really educating him about her from the beginning. There will be changes, but when you involve your child within those changes, it doesn’t feel so drastic. He reads to me every night before he goes to bed and now he says he is excited to read to both me and the baby.

and accessories she will need. Shoes are a weakness for me and I’m already passing that along to her. What is your fitness routine like right now?

I love fashion, so I really don’t have a set uniform, I use it as a form of expression. I love dresses and heels, but I also love a good pair of jeans with a great top and a badass leather jacket.
TIA MOWRY |
What new baby gear have you picked up for this new little one?

Since we are having a girl— she already has an amazing wardrobe! I feel like with boys, you don’t really go all out, but she already has all the shoes, dresses
TIA MOWRY |
Right now, I am 8 months pregnant, so getting from point A to point B is a workout. But when I am not pregnant, I love spinning, yoga, and meditation.
TIA MOWRY |
What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?
MINI |
I am such a champion of the idea that women can have it all. We can work and still be amazing mothers and wives. I have been blessed with a long and busy career, but I always make sure to carve out the time to get my son to school, or read books before bed. It is all about balance.

How would you describe your home— the design, the feel?
MINI |
Our home is a true marriage of modern and vintage. There are a lot of very unique pieces we have collected over time that are balanced by functional, comfortable, and minimal pieces. We also tried to incorporate our interests throughout the home, so you will see lots of fashion and rock ‘n’ roll inspiration in most rooms. Right now, we are working with my favorite designer, Jake Arnold, on our home and I can’t wait to update everything! MANDANA DAYANI |
MINI |
Do you have a favorite room in your home?
MANDANA DAYANI |
My daughters’ rooms are my
favorite. They just feel so fun, light, and inviting. They both have lots of bohemian and whimsical elements with messages of hope and imagination. I often find myself laying under my daughter’s teepee when I am very overwhelmed with work. What are some of your favorite elements in their rooms?
MINI |
The decor in the girls’ rooms are all from my favorite designers: Numero 74, Mrs. Mighetto, Tamar Mogendorff, Nobodinoz, and Pottery Barn Kids. I love how playful, fun, and bright the rooms are. I spent an unbelievable amount of time sourcing decor and art for their rooms that felt unique and inspiring. I really wanted to include details that are whimsical, bohemian, feminine, and unique. MANDANA DAYANI |
Since you’ve just welcomed a new little girl, let’s talk about pregnancy! How was this pregnancy similar or different than your first?
MINI |
Completely different! With my first daughter, I still had a lot of time to rest on the weekends and when I returned home from work. But with my second, there was just never any time to rest. I still had to chase a toddler around and the exhaustion was completely overwhelming. MANDANA DAYANI |
What were your first thoughts when you found out you were pregnant?
MINI |
I honestly can’t remember a moment when I was more excited. It was quite challenging to get pregnant with both of my daughters, so I never took a minute of either pregnancy for granted. It truly is the greatest gift in your life. MANDANA DAYANI |
How about your birth experience— Did your daughter’s birth unfold the way you thought it would?
MINI |
MANDANA DAYANI |
I think the biggest surprise was how different it was! With Miller, I had four false alarms. We kept getting sent home from the hospital. I mean, I totally thought I had this down
but clearly Miller was determined to do things her way. What is most important to you in raising both of your girls?
MINI |
I hope to raise daughters that are kind, open-minded, brave, curious and passionate. MANDANA DAYANI |
How did you decide on your daughters’ (Anderson and Miller) names?
MINI |
My husband and I love strong, unisex names. We thought a lot about what what nicknames we could anticipate and even how their full names would sound in a business setting. MANDANA DAYANI |
How did you prepare Anderson for the new baby’s arrival? What was her reaction to the new baby?
MINI |
We read a lot of books about being a big sister and spoke often of the many exciting things to come. We are so blessed with amazing friends and family who helped make the transition as smooth as possible for her. Everyone congratulated her, brought her “big sister” gifts, and made sure to spend lots of one-on-one time with her. Anderson adores her little sister and is currently really enjoying playing peek-a-boo with her. MANDANA DAYANI |
What do you love most about raising your kids in LA?
MINI |
That we get to live walking distance from most of my family. We see my parents, cousins, and brother’s family almost every day and all of our children are growing up together. It’s so beautiful and I feel incredibly lucky. MANDANA DAYANI |

I am the Chief Brand Officer of EBTH, the premiere estate sale marketplace. I joined the company to lead its rebranding and build teams dedicated to developing and optimizing its user experience, building one cohesive cross-channel brand and generating global awareness. I oversee the company’s brand strategy, marketing and partnerships, merchandising, new launches, global communications, and various consumer facing functions. MANDANA DAYANI |

What do you think is the greatest
challenge of being a working mom? It’s very hard to feel like you’re always falling a bit short. There will just never be enough time to do everything you want to do as a mom, a wife, a friend, and entrepreneur. And not being 100% is very, very challenging for me. MANDANA DAYANI |

Fashion director, brand consultant, and stylist Elle Strauss wears many hats, including mother to daughters, Honor and Imogen. Now she’s adding one more to her list of titles— Angeleno! The fashion industry insider shows us around her Los Angeles home having recently relocated from Brooklyn, by way of Britain.
MINI |
Do you have a favorite room?
My favorite room is the kitchen. I designed it with the help of PCH construction and couldn’t have enjoyed the process more. I’m obsessed with interior design. I love the English farmhouse aesthetic. ELLE STRAUSS |
Thank you for inviting us into your Los Angeles home! Tell us about the place!
MINI |
The house was built in the 1950s which we loved. We’re not a big fan of anything too modern. It’s nice to have a house with a bit of history and character and something that feels a bit English! We also had a house in upstate New York near Hudson that was built in 1830, so all of the furniture had to work in our new home too. It had to feel like a home and not a showroom! ELLE STRAUSS |
What are some of your favorite elements in your home?
MINI |
The Moroccan rugs I found on a trip to Marrakech. Both girls each ELLE STRAUSS |
have one in their bedrooms. I love how that adds a splash of color. I love our bed, mainly for the fact that it’s a king size which feels so luxurious when you’ve been confined to a queen in a New York City apartment. But also because of the Victorian wicker. I guiltily shipped it from England! But it was worth it, right? Talk to us about your daughters’ rooms. What are your favorite elements in their rooms?
MINI |
I love arranging their toys and books. Honor is pretty vocal about the style of her room, but I’m able to sneak some things in, like the pillows and the tent. ELLE STRAUSS |
Since you recently relocated to LA— What do you love about raising your kids there?
MINI |
The weather! I do not miss the cold in NYC or the F train. I also love the space and the fact, for the first time, we have family here (my aunt, uncle, and cousin are in the Palisades). It’s so amazing for the girls to grow up with more family (everyone is in England or France!). They have sleepovers at their house and Deborah takes them to museums and the movies. We all spent Christmas Day together; it was lovely. ELLE STRAUSS |
MINI |
What are you missing from NYC?

think I miss the energy the most. When you’re a mum, you can be a little isolated with the kids and yet in NYC, the buzz is always around you, whether you decide to participate or not. I miss the ease of bumping into people and popping for a coffee in the park or simply just pushing the stroller through the streets. I’m slowly getting used to the LA way of having to schedule! I’m lucky to have a fab group of friends [here] so the transition is definitely getting easier! MINI |
Tell us how you decided on your girls’ names.
I’ve always liked both names. Honor, because of Honor Fraser, an English model, and also Honor Blackman, a Bond girl in the ‘60s. After she’d been named, my mum and grandma called me from England. They were sitting with my Grandpop’s family tree and it turned out that my [three times] great grandmother had also been called Honor and she’d even emigrated to New York from Cornwall, after her husband had passed— so she was also a bad ass! We all ended up in tears as it’s such a strange coincidence. My aunt also recently found her signature ELLE STRAUSS |
at Ellis Island, which is super special. Imogen is from Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. But honestly, I’ve always just loved the name. Imogen is not such an unusual name in England! We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now?
MINI |
Either a puppy or Imogen will wake me up, typically around 6. I will never get used to early mornings. I know a lot of mums say they’re just programmed for early mornings, but not me. I could sleep until mid-day given the chance. If [my husband] James is in town (he’s a photographer and travels a lot) he’ll wake me up with a cuppa, which, hands down, is the greatest thing on earth. Then it’s all systems go. Get the kids fed and ready for school, let the dog and cat out, do the school run, and then it’s onto either a shoot, styling a commercial, fashion editorial, or meetings with brands as a consulting creative editorial director, which I absolutely love doing. We have a wonderful nanny who collects the girls from nursery and school, so by the time I’m home, they are fed and bathed, which is like a another gift from heaven. James and I will chat and work and then aim to be in bed by 10:30 which inevitably becomes 11. ELLE STRAUSS |
How do you manage to keep all of the plates spinning?
MINI |
RED WINDOW CO F F E E ( I T ’ S AU S S I E ! ) H A S T H E B E S T CO F F E E !
You just get on with it. There’s no secret map or guide to any of this. I’m just making it up as I go along like all the other mums, but a great support system definitely helps. James is amazing, my mum flies out from England all the time, my aunt is now down the road, and Rosa, our nanny, is fab! ELLE STRAUSS |
MINI |
What is your greatest joy of motherhood?
Discovering their little personalities. Imogen is hilarious and Honor has the biggest heart and shows such a tremendous amount of empathy for people; it makes us so proud. When they play together, it also makes my heart burst. Yesterday, Honor had them both packing backpacks and going off to Candyland. I could hear them laughing their heads off from the living room. ELLE STRAUSS |
MINI |
What is your greatest parenting worry?
I think the minute they pop out (if not before), you worry. I’m not sure if I have a number one [worry]! Recently, it was that they’d be OK moving to LA. Initially, Honor was mad at us, but she’s made some lovely friends here and the puppy and kitten have helped! ELLE STRAUSS |
What do you think is the one thing no one really warns you about?
MINI |
How much you’ll worry and seriously, no one can prepare you for the lack of sleep. It’s been years! ELLE STRAUSS |
How would you describe your personal style? Has it changed since becoming a mom?
Brooklyn Bird, Doen, Rachel Comey, Ariel Gordon, and Elisa Solomon for sparkles. I love discovering new brands too. Recently, I bought a skirt from an LA-based brand called LOÉIL and my friend has a fab line called VALIANTÉ. For the girls, I love Juniper Baby, Zara, Gap, Scamp and Dude, Wild and Gorgeous, Nights by Wilder (for sleepwear), Plae shoes (they’re machine washable!), I could go on and on. Their closets are ridiculous. Let’s talk beauty. What is your skincare/beauty routine like?

MINI |
It varies from day to day, but simple, clean lines, and chic (I hope). Nothing has changed style-wise, except maybe more flats. ELLE STRAUSS |

Where do you like to shop?

I’ve always loved Dermalogica. Your face just feels so clean after their PreCleanse Balm and Daily Superfoliant. I use SK-II Essence, Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv Serum, and I love to use La Mer. I’ve just discovered Cos Bar here in LA! Body lotion has to be Jo Malone (try Dark Amber & Ginger Lily— it’s delicious!) and since moving to LA, I’ve become more obsessive with SPF. Either using La Roche-Posay or EltaMD from Shen Beauty. I use Biotherm Micellar Water for taking off the toughest mascaras and makeup-wise, I love Stila’s liquid eyeliner, Charlotte Tilbury foundations, or Koh Gen Do as they’re super light. Maybelline mascara, and Becca shimmering lotion which I mix in with foundation for a little glow! I also like to use a body brush everyday to improve my circulation and remove dead skin cells. MINI |
Try not to rush. Being a kid is the best thing ever. There’s no need to grow up so fast. But I expect, like me, they won’t listen! ELLE STRAUSS |
How about yourself? Looking back to your first days as a mom, what advice would you give?
MINI |
ELLE STRAUSS |
It will get better and easier. Every-
thing is literally a stage and you will get through it! How many kids did you see yourself with growing up? Are there more kids in your future?

MINI |
I thought I was done having children after Jack and Sadie. But after my divorce, I fell so deeply in love with Dustin and watching him love my children as his own, I couldn’t help but want that experience with him. I was 42 when I met him and we didn’t even start trying until I was 44. We quickly realized that we needed medical intervention, so as I rounded the corner to 45, we started IVF. the most extreme rollercoaster ride of frustration and disappointment. Because of my advanced age, we couldn’t afford to take even one month off for fear of losing our window of it working, so it was brutal on my body. What were your first thoughts when you learned you were pregnant?

What are you finding has changed the most now, with having a baby, since you had your first two?

Technology, by a long shot. Besides apps, there is just so much more information readily available. And the gear is way more advanced and stylized. The [4moms] mamaRoo is life changing! MAYA BRENNER |

How about your birth experience— Did Otis’ birth unfold the way you thought it would?
MINI |
I had vaginal births with my first two, so I just assumed it would be the same for my third. But at six months, I was told that my placenta was too low on the uterus and could block my cervix if I went into labor, so they scheduled a C-section for three weeks earlier than my due date. We were warned that because our baby was being born at 37 weeks, there was a risk that he could have some respiratory issues and that is exactly what happened. Moments after he born, the doctors were concerned about his oxygen levels and whisked him away to the NICU. Nothing really prepares you for seeing your newborn in an incubator, covered in wires, and attached to a monitor. It was a very scary and stressful four days, but we are thankful that he was OK and we were able to leave the hospital all together. MAYA BRENNER |
Tell us how you decided on his name. Were there other names that got a veto vote from either you or Dustin?
MINI |
We both made a list of our favorites and Otis and Levi were the top two, just in different orders. Since I had named two kids already, I deferred to Dustin for the top slot. I also loved Holden after my favorite fictional character from Catcher in the Rye but realized it was probably too big of a name for our baby. MAYA BRENNER |
How are you staying on top of everything with your career and a new baby?
MINI |
I’m not. It’s actually been really tough, I’m not going to lie. I’ve been to the office three times since Otis was born and I answer most emails one handed while holding him. I have a nanny for the older kids who help with groceries and driving, but I haven’t quite figured out help with the baby yet. Dustin and I assumed we would be able to do it ourselves since we both own our own businesses and have flexible schedules, but because I’m nursing, a lot of it has fallen on me which of course makes sense. We’ve had a lot of comMAYA BRENNER |

munication about it and now that Otis is almost three months old, I’m hoping that we can share in the responsibility more. How are your older kids helping out with Otis?
There is zero free time and everything needs to be scheduled down to the minute to make life run smoothly, so there’s a lack of spontaneity which I miss. MAYA BRENNER |
MINI |
They adore him and love holding him. He’s recently started smiling and laughing and that is so much fun! My daughter plays hip hop music for him and we all dance around to entertain him. MAYA BRENNER |
Where are you loving shopping for baby right now?

MAYA BRENNER |
There’s so much cute baby stuff out there right now. I usually go to a store in our neighborhood called Reckless Unicorn and I love Monica & Andy online. Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life/schedule since you became a mom of 3?
MINI |
We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now with a baby?
MINI |
We wake up between 6-6:30 AM. I feed the baby, get the older kids ready for school, and out the door by 7:45 AM. Then, it’s a morning nap for baby and breakfast for me, answer some emails, feed the baby again, and so it goes for the rest of the day. Before I know it, the kids are home from school and it’s dinner time and bed and we do it all over again the next day. MAYA BRENNER |

The Utah-based creative behind popular lifestyle blog, Pink Peonies, Rachel Parcell is in the midst of building an empire—now including her eponymous women’s fashion line—as well as a new home, all while juggling the mom hustle with two Minis, Isla and Jackson.
Thank you for inviting us into your home! Where do you spend the most time in your home, currently?
MINI |
I spend most of my time in my kitchen with my kids, whether that’s coloring with Isla, cooking, or having chats with my sisters. The kitchen is the heart of our home.
RACHEL PARCELL |
We know you’re building a new home— what are you most looking forward to about the new place?
MINI |
I’m most excited for my kitchen. Like I said, most of our days and nights are spent there and I’m so excited to spend the mornings making my kids breakfast and spending time with friends and family building memories.
RACHEL PARCELL |
Any there any elements that the new home will have that you didn’t have before?
MINI |
A swimming pool. We wanted somewhere that we can spend time as a family all summer long. As a mom, I wake up really early to workout, so I am also excited to be able to walk
RACHEL PARCELL |
downstairs instead of driving to a gym. Hopefully, it will give me 30 minutes of extra sleep! What elements will you be incorporating into your kids’ rooms?
MINI |
For Isla’s room, [something] girly yet sophisticated and for Jackson, bright yet masculine. I want something that will be able to age with them. We plan on our children growing up in this home. It is very expensive to furnish and decorate, so I want something that will be timeless, that we won’t have to change multiple times.
RACHEL PARCELL |
Since you’re now a mom of two, tell us about your day-to-day! What time do you get up?
MINI |
I wake up between six and seven to get my workout done while my babies are still sleeping. They usually wake up around 8:30. We eat breakfast in our jammies and spend quality time together. Mornings are my favorite with my babies. I get Isla ready, drive her to school, and while I’m waiting for her, I try to get most of my meetings in. It’s
RACHEL PARCELL |
definitely a juggling act being a working mom. I try to strategize and plan so I am able to maximize my time with my kids while still running my businesses. What are the biggest changes you’ve experienced going from one child to two?
MINI |
It is double the work, but definitely double the joy! I’m not going to lie, having two kids is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Especially because I am juggling two kids, working, and being a wife. But it is so worth it!
RACHEL PARCELL |
As a mom to just Isla at the time, what were your thoughts when you found out you were pregnant with Jackson?
MINI |
I was so nervous at first because it was such a surprise and Isla Rose was only eight months old! I had nine months to mentally prepare myself though and we can’t imagine life without our bear (Jackson’s nickname).
tal room when my sister-in-law brought me a dozen pink roses. I saw Isla written out by the roses and I instantly knew she was Isla Rose pronounced like eye-la.
RACHEL PARCELL |
MINI |
How did you decide on your kids’ names?
I wanted something beautiful yet sophisticated for both. Jackson Walter is a family name and we loved the idea of carrying on the tradition. It sounded masculine and professional as well. We actually don’t call him Jackson that often— we call him the brother bear most of the time. I was going to name Isla Scarlet until I had her. I looked at her and she didn’t look like a Scarlet. We had Isla written as a name option on the whiteboard in our hospi-
RACHEL PARCELL |
What is most important to you in raising your kids?
MINI |
To be kind, giving, and hard working. I want them to know who they are, where they came from, and where they are going. Decisions determine destiny so I pray that I can provide them with all of the tools on how to be a good person and make wise choices for their future.
RACHEL PARCELL |
What do you love most about raising your kids in Utah?
MINI |
It’s so family-oriented and there are so many moms in the same stage of life as me. I have such a strong mama friend group and we all support and inspire each

other. I couldn’t get through motherhood without them. Your career has really taken off! How do you manage to keep all of the plates spinning?
MINI |
I honestly don’t know. I have a hard time shutting my mind off. I’ve always been a thinker and a creative person. I’m constantly dreaming up different ideas.
RACHEL PARCELL |
What do you think is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?
MINI |
Finding balance. I often struggle with guilt when I’m working and not with my babies. And guilt when I’m with my babies, and not working. It’s getting better and has gotten easier since Isla started going to preschool. As moms, we are so hard on ourselves and I think we need to remember that we’re all doing better than we think we are!
RACHEL PARCELL |
A N D H E A LT H Y !
You’ve also been documenting your fitness journey on Instagram! Tell us what you’ve been doing— what is your everyday fitness routine like?
MINI |
I’ve been doing BBG (Bikini Body Guide). It’s a workout plan you can do at home or at the gym. I do it with all my mama friends in the mornings. I have a better body after having two kids than I had before which is so crazy! Plus, not only do I feel better physically, but mentally I feel happier and more energetic for my kids.
My style is classic and feminine with a little edge, and has definitely toned down since becoming a mom. More practical pieces. lots of athleisure, but I still love to dress up for date nights and church.
RACHEL PARCELL |
RACHEL PARCELL |
How have you changed your diet to follow your new fitness routine?
MINI |
Tell us about your skincare routine.
Right now, I’m loving the Beauty Bioscience products. They sell an athome microneedling tool that helps prevent aging. Their packaging is beautiful too. I also exfoliate with a warm washcloth every night. I swear by that!
RACHEL PARCELL |
MINI |
I really tried to cut all sugar out (apart from weekends— balance is everything!) and I try to not go crazy on the carbs. I’ve also upped my protein intake. I use Fitness Carli’s meal plan and Clean Simple Eats.
RACHEL PARCELL |
Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?
MINI |
What do you think is the one thing about motherhood no one really warns you about?
MINI |
How exhausting mentally and physically it is. My little Jackson is a mama’s boy and wants to live on my hip all day. My back kills most of the time and when my head hits the pillow, I’m totally exhausted. But I wouldn’t trade the backache for anything!

You’ve just had back to back babies, but do you think there are more kids in your future?
MINI |
Definitely! We ideally want two more, but I might only have the energy for one more baby. I get super sick when I’m pregnant, so we’ll see! I make it a priority to be a hands-on mom so I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew. We’ll wait a while to have another baby since my two are so close in age right now.
