Keeping Pregnancy! Exercising while you’re pregnant is not only possible, but it’s recommended as it’ll improve your strength and circulation! Doing a bit of a workout while you’re pregnant is something that’ll help you throughout your pregnancy. You don’t need fancy equipment, gym membership, or even a lot of time committed to stay fit. Most importantly though, you should check with your healthcare practitioner before you start exercising. If you were exercising regularly before pregnancy and there are no complications in your pregnancy, you can continue working out as you’ve done before, but with a focus on duration instead of intensity.
Standing at the Starting Line Starting out can feel intimidating, but the moment you get exercising, it’ll all fall into place! For the first one or two weeks, all you need to do is exercise for 10 to 15 minutes per day, and then increase it by 5 to 10 minutes until you hit 30 minutes. Try not to go beyond 30 minutes of working out unless you were already physically active before your pregnancy. Here are some safer exercises for you to do: Walking / Brisk walking – it’s easy, safe, and improves your blood circulation! Swimming – it’s a whole body exercise that doesn’t put a lot of strain on your joints Prenatal Yoga – it’s something that’ll help you with improving your flexibility and strength, and encourages relaxation Activities to avoid doing while pregnant: Anything with the possibility of taking a hard fall that could injure you and your child Sit-ups and other exercises that require you to lie on your back, as this could cut blood flow throughout your body Riding a bicycle is dangerous as your body’s centre of gravity will go through changes while you’re pregnant. Your sense of balance will be off, and you might not be able to adapt fast enough, which could cause a tumble while moving at higher speeds. However, riding a stationary exercise bike is fine. High-contact sports like martial arts, football, and basketball. Not only is the possibility for a fall a lot higher, the amount and force of contact that’s involved in these sports is dangerous for both you and your child Run your fitness routine by your healthcare practitioner to make sure that the activities aren’t risky for both you and baby.
BENEFITS FROM EXERCISING DURING PREGNANCY: Reduces backaches, constipation, bloating, swelling Increases energy levels Improves mood (exercise increases serotonin levels) Improves posture Builds muscles, strength, and endurance Can help prevent or treat gestational diabetes Better sleep! Best of all, being active during pregnancy will make it easier for you to get back in shape after baby is born
Things to Consider
1
Eating Enough Calories Remember that you should be eating around 1.3 people’s worth of food and calories in a day, and that exercise burn calories, so you’ll have to eat quite a bit more depending on your exercise routine. You’ll need to be well nourished for both you and baby, and if your body mass index (BMI) is within a healthy range of 18 and 25, you should eat 340 more calories a day during your second trimester, and 450 more calories a day during your third trimester.
2
Wearing the Proper Attire Three factors that you’ll need to consider for your exercise attire are: Keeping cool: pregnant ladies tend to get overheated faster, and should wear loose clothes with breathable fabric Good support: a maternity bra with the right amount of support is recommended Shoes: training/running/walking shoes with a good fit is needed regardless of whether you’re pregnant or not. However, being pregnant might cause your feet to swell up a bit, so if your old shoes are too tight, get a new pair!
3
Hydrating Yourself Drink lots of water before, during, and after your workout to keep dehydration at bay. It’s vital for pregnant women to stay well-hydrated, as water helps your baby to develop healthily. Water is a big part of forming the placenta, which baby relies on to receive nutrients during your pregnancy, and will form the amniotic sac later in pregnancy. Dehydration during your pregnancy can lead to serious complications such as: inadequate breast milk production, neural tube defects, premature labour, and low amniotic fluid, which could lead to birth defects because of a lack of nutrition to baby. One easy way to check how well-hydrated you are is to see the colour of your urine. If it’s semi-clear, you’re pretty well hydrated, but if it’s yellowish, you’ll need to drink more water.
Overexert 4 Don’t Exercising until you’re gasping and out of breath while
pregnant is a major no-no. If you’re unable to have a comfortable conversation at your current pace, bring your exercising pace and intensity a notch down. Here are some signs that you should take it easier when you’re exercising: Pain in joints and ligaments during or after your workout You feel exhausted instead of energised after your workout – the point of exercising while you’re pregnant is to help you feel invigorated, not to push your physical limits Very sore and weak muscles, which could be dangerous as it’ll affect your balance
TOP TIPS
FOR PACKING YOUR INFANT CARE BAG
It’s easy to forget to pack something in that all-so-crucial bag when you’re sending baby off to infant care, but worry not! We’ve got a handy list and some tips for you right here.
1
It’s the weekend, your little one is sound asleep, there’s an open baby bag in front of you, baby’s essentials are strewn all over your bed – you’re wondering what to pack for their first day at infant care and it’s starting to freak you out. What if you forget something?! What if there are too many things?! What if…
Milk and Water bottles – label each accordingly with baby’s name. Important note: some infant care centres require a new bottle for every feed while others only require one bottle which they will wash and sterilise, so please check with your centre about this.
2
Breastmilk or Formula bags – they’re easier to use and could prevent spillage. Try not to send a tin of formula, as bags are easier to measure. For breastmilk, you can also choose to place it into bottles (labelled with your child’s name) and pass to it to the centre in a cooler bag. The centre will then be able to warm up the milk
3
Cereal – when baby is able to start eating cereal, you should once again, label the cereal that you send to the centre with your child’s name!
4
Baby Food – when baby starts eating solid food regularly, you can pass containers to the centre that are filled with their food and are labelled with your child’s name
5
Utensils – pack a bowl and spoon for your child as well, and don’t forget to label them
Milk, Bottles, and Food
Okay firstly, take a deep breath. Breathe in, hold it there for a second or two, and then let it out… Secondly, get these items prepared: Sticky labels Non-toxic markers Iron-on labels that are waterproof Scotch, masking, or duct tape Ziploc bags Because you’ll need a bunch of them to help you stay organised! Here’s a list of items that you should pack for baby:
If you happened to notice, labelling your child’s items with their name is a reoccurring theme!
Diapers and Clothes
08 Shopping Magazine, Issue 12
1
Clothes like shirts, socks, bibs, pants, pyjamas – things WILL get messy and dirty, so a change of clothes will be extremely helpful. Make sure you label (either use an iron-on patch or sew their name or initials on) every single item of clothing for easier identification. You should provide a bag for dirty clothing to be placed in as well
2 3
Jacket or sweater if your child gets cold Towel -- mainly for hygiene reasons, if your child takes a shower in school
4
Wet wipes – the infant care centre will be thankful that you provide them!
5
Blankets and Sheets – some infant care centres will ask you to pack an extra set of blankets and sheets, and even though they might provide laundry services, you should do so just in case
6
Diapers – you should know, on average, how many diapers baby goes through a day, so pack accordingly. But it’s always better to give more instead of less!
7
Wet Bag – for the dirty diapers that baby has, especially if they’re using reusable cloth ones
8
Diaper rash cream – provide the centre with the cream that you know baby doesn’t have a reaction to
Other Important Items
1
Soap and Shampoo – you’ll know the brands that’re best for your child
2
Comfort Items – something that’ll help them to calm down like a pacifier or a pillow
3
Medication – if your child requires medication, make sure you pack them and label their name onto the bottles. Infant care centres will usually ask parents to sign a form first that states that you’ve authorised them to give medicine to your child. Ensure you’ve provided clear instructions on the application and dosage of their medication
MORE TIPS LABEL EVERYTHING. This can’t be stressed enough. Labels are mainly for hygienic purposes and safekeeping. Things will go missing, but labelling them will help you out a bit! On the topic of things going missing, try not to hand over things that are hard to replace, expensive, and easily broken. The clothes that you send will definitely get dirty and stained, so only use ones that you can live with being stained, or are alright with throwing away. For consumable items like diapers, food, wet wipes, etc., take note of how much is left and when you’ll need to replenish them by. One more thing to take note of is that every infant care centre will have their own checklist of items so please do enquire with them about that list when you’re looking to sign up with them. The items that we’ve listed above are generally what are required to be packed in your bag. It’s always better to be prepared in advance! We hope your child’s infant care experience will be a good one!

Hygiene Tips When Baby’s Here
Find out how to keep baby as germ-free as possible! Babies are seemingly both magnets for and causes of germs and viruses due to their immune system that’s still growing, so practicing good hygiene is extremely important to keep baby happy and healthy! Here are 5 tips that you and your partner should do to at home:
Wash Your Hands It’s something that our parents keep telling us, no matter how old we are (similar to how they affectionately call us ‘boy ah’ or ‘girl ah’, even though we’re well past that age). We really should listen to them on washing hands, especially after baby’s living with us! If we want to touch or play with baby, it’s important that we wash our hands after doing any of these: Handling food After we use the toilet Touching a pet Handling rubbish Changing their diapers If we’re sick We should use good antibacterial soap or hand sanitiser to remove harmful bacteria and germs that could cause a bunch of infections like colds, flu, diarrhoea, and more. After we’ve washed our hands, make sure to dry them properly (and regularly wash the hand towels that we use too). 10 Shopping Magazine, Issue 12
Keep Toys Clean One thing that babies love to do when they’re able to pick things up is to put them in their mouths afterwards. It looks really cute when they’re giggling while chewing on a TV remote (yes, I know that’s not a toy, but almost anything that they can pick up magically transforms into a toy for them), but imagine the amount of germs and dirt that’s on it! So, step one, keep non-toys out of baby’s reach and sight as much as possible. They won’t want things that they can’t see. Step two, keep the actual toys close to baby and keep them clean! Regularly wipe those toys down with a good, child-friendly disinfectant. For hard plastic toys, rinse them thoroughly. For soft toys, try to use the washing machine on them as much as possible, because they trap a lot more dirt and germs within them. Step three, it might eventually be impossible or too tiring, but try your best to keep the toys in a clean storage cabinet or box.
Change Baby’s Diaper Frequently Keep infections and rashes away from baby’s bum when you change their diapers ASAP after a code brown (poo). Dirty diapers are a hotspot for infections to occur, so it’s essential that you wash your hands after you get rid of them. To treat diaper rashes, use a good diaper rash cream that’s easy on baby’s sensitive skin. For reusable cloth diapers, you should dump them into a dry diaper pail and then wash the collected diapers every day or every other day. If you’re worried about the smell the diapers give off, try pouring a bit of baking soda onto the diapers. When washing your cloth diapers in the washing machine, do a cold rinse first followed by a regular hot rinse with around half to a quarter of your normal amount of detergent. When drying them, you should partially dry them and then air dry them – make sure not to use your hottest drying setting too, as this will lessen the lifespan of cloth diapers.
Sanitise Feeding Equipment Using a breast pump to express some extra milk for feeding later? Make sure your hands are clean before using it, and after use, ensure that all the attachments are properly sanitised and sterilised. Because baby will be drinking the milk that’s been expressed, the equipment that helps to express your milk needs to be as clean as possible. You can either use a steam steriliser or a UV steriliser – both do the job well and will get rid of most of the bacteria and germs.
Keeping Your Home Clean Everyone loves a clean house, and it’s especially important to keep it clean when baby’s around. You don’t need to do a 100%, top-to-bottom clean with a steamer and disinfectant every single day, but you do need to look out for areas that have the most amount of contact with food and hands. These include and aren’t limited to: the toilet, kitchen, tables, pots and pans, cutlery and utensils. You’ll just need some hot water and detergent to clean the items that you can pick up in your hands, and disinfectant for the toilet and kitchen. Disinfect areas that have high amounts of human contact like the taps, toilet seats, and door handles.
As a follow up to the previous article, we’re here to help you get fit after your pregnancy! Sticking to a healthy and active lifestyle as best as you can will only serve to benefit you and baby. Okay, you’ve given birth and it’s a healthy baby – congrats! You may want to take it easy and rest (and you really should), but doing some light exercises does have its benefits. You’ll feel more energetic and happier, and your strength and stamina will get a boost!
When can I start exercising after giving birth? For mummies who’ve done a caesarean birth, you’ll need to wait for at least six weeks for your body to heal and recover – you’ll have a postnatal check-up scheduled after that six week period as well, so you should check with your health care practitioner if you’re able to begin working out. For mummies who’ve gone through a vaginal birth without complications, and have been exercising consistently before and throughout their pregnancy, they can start out with light exercises after they feel they’re ready to. However, some things that’re really common amongst mums who’ve just given birth are the aches in their bodies and bones, plus the fatigue that sets in – those are signs that you shouldn’t push yourself while exercising. Hormones like relaxin that’re produced during pregnancy to help relax ligaments in the pelvis and widen the cervix can last for up to six months in your body. This means that your joints will be a bit weaker for a while, and you shouldn’t do strenuous, high-contact activities or even strength/resistance training. Even if you’re mentally ready to start exercising again, pay attention to the physical needs of your body too; don’t go too hard while you’re working out.
Keeping Fit After Giving Birth!
The Do’s and Don’ts of Exercising Early On Do… For C-sec mums: REST AND RECOVER for around 6 weeks, and get approval from your healthcare practitioner during your postnatal check-up before you start exercising For C-sec mums: Pay attention to your c-sec wound and see if it’s healing properly Kegels to strengthen your pelvic floor – these exercises will help your vagina recover faster as it encourages circulation there, which reduces swelling and bruising. Note: for C-sec mums, Kegels are ok to do even while you’re healing from your wounds Go for light walks – some sunlight and fresh air will help you both physically and mentally and as an added bonus, you can take baby out with you either in a stroller, a sling, or a carrier Keep yourself hydrated when you’re exercising Eat enough, with a healthy and well-rounded diet! Don’t worry about losing weight, because as long as you keep to an active exercise schedule and you breastfeed baby, you’ll burn the extra weight that you’ve put on during pregnancy. It’s more important to ensure that your breastmilk is filled with nutrients for baby! Don’t… Do heavier or high-intensity exercises for around 5-6 months after you’ve given birth, as you need to let your body recover Go swimming until after you’ve gone for your postnatal check (which is 6 weeks after birth), as you’re also prone to infection from the swimming pool’s water while your womb is still healing
How important is it to lose extra weight after giving birth? The most important thing to consider when losing weight is if you want more kids. Being overweight could increase the risk of complications in future pregnancies, which includes: Getting an emergency C-section High blood pressure and pre-eclampsia Developing gestational diabetes A more difficult labour If you’re not planning on having more kids, keeping your weight under control and staying healthy still has its benefits! Firstly, you’ll continue to remain healthy as your child grows up – your energy levels will be improved (it gets quite a bit more tiring as they get older), you’ll be reducing your risk of diabetes and heart disease too. Secondly, exercise helps you both physically and mentally. We’ve already talked about the physical parts of exercise, so let’s take a look at the mental benefits. The mental boost that you get from exercise is partially from being able to take control of yourself (via the level of your fitness). You’ll witness and experience, first-hand, the change that your body’s going through, which is a direct result of your effort and hard work!
Overestimate yourself – it’s better to be safe than sorry, so if you’re feeling especially winded or there are weird and painful aches, you should stop exercising immediately and go see your healthcare practitioner

BABY FRIENDLY AIRLINES IN SINGAPORE
Let our handy guide show you some airlines in Singapore that are baby friendly, for when you’ll be planning your future holidays!
This article was originally published in the Pregnancy & Baby website: http://www.pregnancyandbaby.com.sg/article-detail/217/
Here they are in alphabetical order:
1
Okay, this is something we all definitely love doing – going on a holiday! Seeing new sights, eating yummy food, and taking in fresh experiences, and those things (probably with the exception of eating yummy food) are what we want our kids to experience as well.
We’ve come up with a simple list of 5 baby and kid friendly airlines that give your little ones the VIP treatment through baby kits, meals, diapers, and even bottles!
14 Shopping Magazine, Issue 12
One of the more low-key but established airlines, Cathay provides the essentials to care for babies. A bassinet can be requested for when you’re buying your tickets – it can hold up to a weight of 12kg, but they’ve stated on their website that infants 6 months and above might feel uncomfortable sitting in it. Breastfeeding is allowed for all phases of flight, and the use of electric breast pumps is allowed after the announcement that electronic devices are able to be switched on. Each of their aircrafts also has at least 2 bathrooms with changing tables in them. Due to hygiene reasons, they won’t be able to reheat or chill your personal food items. However, if you wish to warm up your milk, they’ll be happy to provide a container of hot water!
One of the first steps that we’ll take after deciding on where to travel to is choosing an airline to fly there on! There’s always a chance that your kids, or someone else’s kids will be acting out on the flight, and for those long-haul flights, it can be both mentally and physically draining. Sometimes, situations that turn baby into a bawling mess can’t be avoided (e.g. air pressure, a gassy tummy), but there are airlines that are trained and equipped to help you handle a bit of that strain.
Cathay Pacific
To refrigerate your expressed milk, remember to bring a cool bag or vacuum flask and ask the flight attendants to help store them. For parents with from 3 to 6 years old, they’ll provide a fun little kids pack filled with activity books and games for them to entertain themselves with.
2
Emirates
First things first, parents with infants and toddlers will get to skip the long queues to check-in – they have a dedicated family check-in desk just for you! This friendly gesture extends to boarding as well, allowing your family to get settled in on the plane first.
Bassinets (that can hold up to a weight of 11kg) and baby kits with wet wipes and nappies, can be requested. The bathrooms onboard are equipped with changing tables, and their flight staff are usually helpful towards parents with infants and toddlers.
For older kids (3-6 years), Qantas has a special Joey Club kids kit that’ll keep them entertained! They have Etch-a-Sketch and an activity booklet, and on selected international flights, children can get exclusive Joey Club socks too!
For infants younger than 2 years, they can sit on your lap with a special seatbelt extension that’ll be given to you. For those who are above 2 years, you’ll have to get a child’s fare for them and they’ll have their own seat, or you can bring a baby car seat that fits their safety regulations.
For food options, meals for your children should be requested for when making your booking. While their flights have a range of baby food, you should bring your own baby food that you know your little one will enjoy.
You’ll also enjoy an extra 10kg as check-in baggage, regardless of cabin class, and a 5kg carry-on/cabin baggage for your inflight infant necessities. If there’s space onboard the plane, you can also stow a collapsible stroller with you – however, if there’s no space, your stroller will have to be checked-in.
3
Our very own Singapore Airlines does pretty good in the family-friendly department, with lots of offerings for babies, toddlers, and young children. You’ll get priority boarding with your young children to help you settle in before the other passengers get onboard.
Infants and toddlers can snuggle a soft-toy to sleep, and when they’re awake, they’ll get some colouring pencils for a colouring book! For older kids, kids packs can be requested for them, containing fun and educational materials with activities and games, and maybe even a travel journal for them to fill!
The inflight staff are also trained to help you and your children out – they know how to carry and tend to your babies to give you a much needed break. A bassinet can also be requested for when booking your tickets, and it can support up to 14kg of weight (though their bassinet sizes and weight limits vary by aircraft).
Etihad Airways
Baby amenities such as disposable bibs, feeding bottles, and wet wipes are available, but they recommend you to bring your own as they’re limited in supply and may not be the ones that baby is used to.
Etihad’s a bit more pricey, but the service they provide for families is top-notch. The service that stands out the most is their Flying Nanny – these staff have been specially trained in Norland College (a United Kingdoms approved childcare college) to understand child psychology, and help keep kids entertained on flights! These nannies have activity packs on hand, and know how to do arts & crafts and origami, hand puppets, face-painting, and even magic tricks! They’ll help you out the best they can in order to give you a better holiday experience. Baby bassinets can be requested for during booking, and is on a first-come, first-served basis. They can hold a weight of up to 10kg and are for little ones who are younger than 10 months old. Baby and child meals should also be requested for during booking or 24 hours before departure, or your child won’t be able to enjoy their colourful meals!

Singapore Airlines
Qantas Airways
They’ve been in the air since 1920, and they’re a reliable and experienced airline. Their family-friendly services are also reliable, starting with pre-boarding – families with young children get to board first and settle down. Infants (under 2 years) have no carry-on baggage allowance, so you can bring their food and nappies in addition to your own carry-on baggage allowance. Children (2 years and above) have the same carry-on baggage allowance as adults. If a bassinet is required, you should notify them when booking your tickets as they’re subject to availability. Their bassinets can hold up to 11kg in weight.
For your own amenities, infant food, and breastmilk, you can bring up to a total of 6kg – that’s in addition to your own 7kg free baggage allowance! The plane’s chillers have limited space and their temperature isn’t able to be controlled, so please put your breastmilk in a small cooler bag with ice packs to help with keeping it chill. Travel packs are also available for children under 12, with their themes and items changing every 4 months. Inflight entertainment gives your older children the opportunity to have multiplayer games with other kids on board, and even has a language learning program to teach simple words and phrases of the country you’re flying to. During meals, your children will be served first, and if they need your help to be fed, one parent will be served first and the other later. Baby and children meals are pretty healthy, with lower sugar content and for those between 1 to 2 years old, they even provide a post-weaning meal that’s easy to chew and digest!
