WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Le Corbusier’s view of Pictorial Space is “that which cannot be entered or circulated through; it is irremediably space viewed from a distance, and is therefore eternally resigned to frontality”. In other words, as it exists on a two-dimensional picture plane, describing a world which cannot be entered or experienced by the viewer, one only able to be viewed from a distance, thus whatever is depicted within the plane is always going to be parallel to the plane even despite the use of illusions of depth.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The flatness is attributed to properties of frontality and ideation, that objects viewed from a distance are inherently frontal, and that depth can thus only be inferred. These are two properties which describe the inherent flatness of the pictorial space. These are pitted against rotation and experience, that one can understand the layout and composition of the space through means of rotation within it, and thus rather than being inferred depth can be experienced. These are two properties which cannot be achieved due to the flatness of the pictorial space.

WEEK 4 READING: ALLEN, AXONEMTRIC-PROJECTION

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictorial (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial in this case perspectival, is the use of one or more vanishing points to create realistic depictions of scenes or structures from a certain viewpoint, as one would see it if they were actually there. As lines converge, distances are distorted. Whereas with projection, the lines used are parallel, and there is no vanishing point, or the vanishing point is located at “infinity. The use parallel lines enables the drawing to have exact measurements, which distorts the image so that it does not look realistic.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) In a military context in order to track the trajectories of artillery projectiles. A precise way of charting the trajectories was needed so measurements could be taken, as use of perspective would have distorted the distances.
