WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are: Cylinders: The edges of faces are pairs of parallel lines. Cones: The edges of faces converge at the vertex of the cone shape. Tangent surfaces of space curves: The edges of faces are tangents drawn down from a three dimensional curve

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) If one wishes to use geometry and paneling in their work of architecture, they must have an understanding of developable surfaces or they may not be able to physically produce their design. For instance Alpha Studios would have had to know whether the triangle pattern they wanted to create was developable before they started building the Greenhouse

PANELLING 2D PATTERN

2d Panelling, Pattern: Triangular

2d Panelling, Pattern: TriBasic

2d Panelling, Pattern: Dense

3

VARIABLE 2D PATTERN

Circle pattern with varying size using point attractors in the top left and bottom right

Oval pattern with varying translated position within grid boxes using the top and bottom line of the surface as curve

Square pattern with varying rotation using a point attractor in the centre

4

3D PANEL TEST PROTOTYPE & TEMPLATE

Examples given in Survival Guide have been used to understand how to make 3D panels.

Six of the examples folded into their 3D shape.

5

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is a the use of digital data to control the fabrication process, relying on computer driven machine tools to cut or build parts. It allows us to create architecture out of complex geometries, which can be unrolled into two dimensional nets, essentionally giving us a new way of representing three dimensional solids with multiple joined two dimensional shapes.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) Folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design because: it can make materials rigid and stiff, allowing them to be self supporting; and it is materially economical, it uses up less material than using two or more separate pieces.

6

EXPLORING 3D PANELLING
