Unwinding on Sicily’s Egadi Islands By Jessica Infantino Trumble

There’s something to be said about saving the best for last. While it’s hard to decide what my favourite thing about Sicily was, our last day visiting the Egadi Islands was definitely up there. The archipelago is made up of 3 small islands, Favigana, Levanzo and Marettimo (plus a few other smaller uninhabited islets), distinguished by their whitewashed villages, rocky coves and turquoise waters that feel a world away from the mainland. And while it may seem like a paradox to go to an island (Sicily) and then leave for other islands (the Egadi Islands), this change in scenery was exactly what we needed after being on the go for a week. Our last day started the same – up early, breakfast, hop in the car and drive – but that’s where the similarities ended. So yes, I’m glad we saved the best for last.

Decoding the Islands Figuring out the Egadi Islands wasn’t easy. I found very little information while planning our trip in terms of what to expect when we actually got there. But first there was the task of deciding which one(s) to pick given our

limited time. The islands are located off the coast of western Sicily and are connected by ferry from both Trapani and Marsala, so the Liberty Lines website was a good place to start. Here we were able to view timetables, purchase tickets and email questions, which were met by impressively fast and responsive answers. I learned that each island has its own unique charm (and fun fact, they didn’t become part of the Italian state until 1937!). The largest, Favigana, is mostly flat sans the castle-topped Monte Santa Caterina, so it’s a good place to rent a bike and explore on two wheels. Here you’ll also find numerous beach coves including Cala Rossa, a prime

swimming spot that was once the site of one of the deadliest battles of the First Punic War in the 3rd century BC. The smallest, Levanzo, is known for its pebbly beaches and prehistoric cave paintings at the Grotta del Genovese, which can only be viewed by guided tour (book in advance). The least developed is Marettimo, where you’ll find an extensive network of hiking trails that fan out across the island. It’s also a prime spot for scuba diving. Since we didn’t want to feel too rushed we choose 2 of the islands, Levanzo and Marettimo, with about 3 hours to spend on each. Favigana would have to wait for a future trip to Sicily. We purchased our tickets online and were emailed vouchers that we had to exchange for physical tickets at the Liberty Lines offices near the port in Trapani. If you’re arriving by car like us, there’s a ton of parking conveniently located along Viale Regina Elena adjacent to the port with automated machines to pay. A parking attendant happened to walk by as we were arriving and sold us a day pass for continued on page 10

Beach time in Levanzo We boarded the ferry and after about 50 minutes we had arrived at Levanzo, which is the second stop on the ferry route after Favigana. As the boat pulled into the port we were welcomed by an adorable village of whitewashed houses with blue windows and doors, a postcardperfect scene reminiscent of a place you would expect to find in Greece. Time seemed to stand still here, fishing boats bobbing calmly in the water, succulents and cactuses clinging to rocky crevices and quiet streets in beautiful decay where locals hung their laundry out to dry. Turn right and the road leads to a few rocky beaches including Cala Fredda less than 10 minutes away and Cala Minola a little further on. We turned left and walked about 20 minutes through the town and along the peaceful coastline until we reached Cala Faraglione, a small pebbly beach cove across from a tiny islet of Il Faraglione with views of Favigana and Marettimo in the distance. The water was crystal clear although we decided not to get in after noticing quite a few small jellyfish washed up on the shore. We had the beach all to ourselves and spent a few hours lounging on the smooth white rocks. With a slight breeze and overcast skies above, the conditions couldn’t be more perfect.

Home improvement grants in Spain In March 2018 the Spanish Government approved the Housing Plan 2018-2021. The Royal Decree includes, amongst other things, help with home improvements. Read on to see if you could get some help towards the cost.

What type of home improvements are eligible for grants? Grants are only available for those works that will improve energy efficiency in the home. This could include (but is not limited to): • Insulation • New windows • Electrical installation • Heating and air conditioning • Sound proofing If you take into account that around 13% of household expenses go on energy, improving efficiency can help you save money in the future.

Who can request a grant? Article 7, 2. a) of the Royal Decree states “In the case of foreign nationals, these must be legally resident in Spain”. Home owners (with or without a current mortgage) with detached houses, terraced houses or houses in residential communities. Additionally Housing Communities can request grants for blocks of flats or apartments. Houses must have been constructed and finished before 1996 (previously grants were only applicable to housing built before 1981). Additionally your house must be your usual place of residence. Second homes and holiday homes are not included. You must have been resident at the address for at least one year before requesting a grant. For blocks of flats, at least 50% must be usual places of residence (owned or rented) and not holiday lets. Works can be both for exterior and interiors.

I am renting, can I get a grant? If you rent you can also request a grant, however investing in a home that’s not yours may be risky. Speak with the owner first and see if you can come to some type of agreement regarding splitting the cost.

How much can I get with a grant? For houses the maximum amount cannot exceed E12,000, or 40% of the cost. Low income households can receive 75% of the cost. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

For individual flats the limit is E8000. For blocks of flats this amount is multiplied by the number of flats. In both cases the grant will not be more than 40% of the cost. Another E1000 are available for improvements to houses or buildings that are registered as Buildings of Cultural Interest (due to age or architecture). Additional amounts will be available for improvements aimed at accessibility for those with disabilities and seniors (over 65s).

How long do the works have to take? Works cannot take longer than 12 months once the Municipal Licence has been issued. This period is extended to 16 months for blocks of flats, or 18 months if over 40 flats are affected. Works must be carried out by a company or freelance worker who can supply a full legal invoice.

How can I get a grant (and more info)? Grants will be available regionally in Spain. Each region has been awarded a different amount that will also be put towards other aspects of the Housing Plan (such as help for young first-time buyers). Amounts include: • Andalucía: nearly 250 million euros • Murcia: 63 million euros • Valencia region: 164 million euros Each region will publish information online with the details of how to request a grant. In the Royal Decree the following paperwork is mentioned for houses: Proof that the house was built and finished prior to 1996 (this is available at the Land Registry). Technical report (dated prior to the grant request) that clearly states how the works to be carried out will improve energy efficiency. This report must show how much less energy will be required: this reduction must be from 20% to 35%, depending on the climate in the region in Spain. If required for complex works, a detailed technical report referencing the Technical Housing Code.

Tips Several regions in Spain are taking their time with the processing and awarding of grants. However recent elections have not altered the amount that regions have available for these grants. Remember that these grants are not guaranteed before you apply. The money is limited and may end at any time in your region, or it may end in some regions earlier than others. Don’t start major rehab works just because you think you may get a grant.

Summer Swimming There is nothing more lovely than a cool swim in the summer months here in Spain, whether it is your own pool, the municipal local pool or the Mediterranean. That delicious feeling of cool water after your body fries in the Spanish heat is so refreshing and makes you feel lively, awake and gives you that zap of energy you need to carry on with your day! Swimming is also the perfect exercise, you get all of the benefits of an aerobic workout without getting hot and sweaty and without putting stress on your joints. It is also an exercise that can be done by both younger and older people and is utilised by athletes to stay strong when they are recovering from an injury. There is no need for any fancy equipment either, just you and the water. Swimming has many more health benefits than those obvious advantages that we know of. Swimming works the whole body and improves muscle tone and definition and strength. When you run you only work muscle groups in your legs but in the water the legs kick and the arms pull. As the back reaches and rotates, the stomach tightens to power the legs and stabilise the core. This all makes swimming one of the best aerobic exercises to give you a total body workout! According to research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, swimming also builds bone mass. Lots of experts before this research scoffed at the idea of swimming affecting bone mass. The study put rats into three groups; running, swimming and no exercise. Whilst running showed the highest increase in bone mineral density, the swimming group also showed benefits over the control group. Swimming is also great for helping you stay flexible because it requires you to reach, stretch, pull and twist. Your ankles are like fins and are stretched with each kick as you push against the pressure of the water. Whilst swimming is well known to help strengthen your heart muscle, research also indicates that swimming reduces body wide inflammation which in turn leads to reduced disease progression. If your calorie intake has been taking a battering lately with all the summer parties, barbecues, extra alcohol and ice cream, why not get in the pool for half an hour. The breaststroke will burn off 180 calories in 30 minutes or if you are capable to do freestyle that would burn off 300 calories and butterfly will burn 450 calories !!

Swimming actually helps this because you are breathing in moist air and studies have shown that it actually improves the overall condition of the lungs. If you love a natural endorphin kick when you do exercise but hate training in the heat, what better way to retain your fitness than getting in the pool or sea? Swimming can bring about all those feel good emotions that running does. In addition to the happy hormones, you can feel a deep relaxation afterwards similar to when you practice yoga. Swimming is also very calming and meditative, as the sound of your breathing and water rush by, this helps you focus inward and drown out all other distractions in the mind. This lowers stress and depression naturally. If you are going to the beach this summer, make time for a swim in the sea or even better a fresh water lake. After camping near Alhama de Granada, I recently swam in the lake there one morning. It was absolutely divine and so beneficial for the skin as opposed to the chlorine that goes into swimming pools. My skin felt like silk after only going in there for half an hour. If you can go in salt water though, that is still great for your skin and will help you retain moisture in your skin over time and detoxify to promote cell growth. You will be surprised at how smooth and invigorating an ocean swim can be. While all exercise produces benefits there is nothing quite like swimming as one of the best choices for health and body. Mazda CX-30 and SKYACTIV-X

Mazda CX-30

Mazda expect to sell 286,000 new cars in Europe this year, up by around 6%. They have seen growth year on year and expect this to continue. We went to Frankfurt to drive the all-new CX-30, a Compact SUV measuring 4,395mm, about the same length as a Nissan Qashqai and many other small SUV’s, so it's ´in good company. It is described by Mazda as a compact SUV but it is hardly that. It has loads of room for five adults, and a good sized boot with 430 litres of space capacity. The width of the opening of the rear door is 1,020mm, so wide by comparison to other similar vehicles. The CX-30 sits in Mazda’s range between the CX-3 and CX-5, so you would think it would naturally be called the CX-4. But no, there are numbers considered to be unlucky in Japan, The number four is thought to be unlucky because the word four resembles the word for death ‘shi’ so consequently it has been called the CX-30. The CX-30 looks good, and unlike most other new cars being launched it doesn’t really have any side lines, or swathelines. The body panels are just smooth, no indentations or crisp lines. It gets its lines by the light hitting the panels and creating their own individual lines, and the shape of the car seems to change depending on the way the light or the sun is hitting it, all clever design and 16 THE MARKET PLACE

body pressing. There were two engines available to drive in Germany, the Skyactiv-G, a 2.0-litre petrol that produces 122ps, also a 1.8 Skyactiv-D diesel. But because of time limitations and the simple fact that it is unlikely many diesels will be sold in the UK, we decided to spend our time in the petrol. This 2.0-litre petrol engine is not the quickest thing on the market today, although you would expect it, having a large displacement compared to other manufactures who often use engines with half the cylinder capacity. So you'd think it would be off like a rocket - but no, it is a very steady engine. However, it has enough power for everyday use, and you need to drive it according to its power output, and know its limitations. But it is a quiet and refined engine and has a Mild Hybrid system with Cylinder Deactivation, so only two of the cylinders are used when needed, such as coasting, slowing down, or cruising on the motorway. When braking or going down hills electricity is generated and goes into a battery, this power is then used to help with acceleration, and this reduces fuel use, and consequently lowers emissions. We happily drove the CX-30 around the edges of Frankfurt, and were surprised just how pretty the countryside and villages were. We just tootled around taking in the scenery and enjoying being sat up fairly high in this SUV. The interior is up to a very high standard, with fit and finish and materials used all excellent. All the controls are in the right

place, and are easy to use and understand. The seats are well designed and comfortable. Mazda have managed to design the A- and C-Pillars to minimise blind spots. Mazda are true believers in their own language and beliefs. The whole company are committed to their own sayings, and use them as often as possible, some of which to the outsider are not that understandable, such as: "A more mature Kodo design language combines vitality with greater styling prestige inspired by the minimalist elegance and purity of Japanese art and the beauty of space between objects". And... "the latest Skyactiv Technologies and Jinba Ittai driving pleasure of unprecedented quality". I’m sure if you live and breathe Mazda then it all makes sense. But as you talk to Mazda people, whether they are marketing, design, engineers or PR, then you get the impression they are all so dedicated, and want to offer the best vehicle and technology possible. The CX-30 has come at just the right time for Mazda, as this sector that it is entering is going through an ongoing growing spurt. ********** After the CX-30 we got into a Mazda3 fitted with the all-new SKYACTIV-X petrol engine that produces 180ps, so quite a bit more powerful than the Skyactiv-G. This 2.0-litre engine is revolutionary in the engine world. Mazda looked at both petrol and diesel engines, and their very clever engineers decided to try and combine

the best of both engines. After a couple of presentations by Mazda’s top engineers and designers, I still wasn’t exactly sure how it all works. It basically uses advanced Thermal Technology, and a new combustion principle. This new engine uses a higher air-mix with petrol, making it more lean-burn, which gives it more power and a Torque improvement. In other words, less fuel is burnt, as it combines the spark of a petrol engine with the compression ignition of a diesel... complicated? Yes..!! But is does seem to work. As we drove the Mazda3 fitted with this new technology, you really couldn’t tell you were driving something different, which in one way is good. As you take your foot off the accelerator to change gear, the engine revs seem to stay fairly high, all ready to take up for the next gear. Normally the revs would drop, you press the accelerator to keep going and maintain speed, but the ‘X’ engine thinks ahead and does it for you. This engine also has the advantage of having the Mild-Hybrid system, which again helps reduce fuel usage, and keeps emissions as low as possible. But this new technology, and new engine does come at a cost – just over £2,000 more than the equivalent ‘G’ engine. Whether buyers will think it is worth it, remains to be seen. But as more and more move away from diesels then the SKYACTIV-X will be a more natural choice. A good day out in Germany, and I feel I learnt an awful lot. I just hope this short piece does it justice.

Jessie J at Starlight Festival in Marbella - 16th August Malaga's summer festival originally commemorated the incorporation of Malaga into the Kingdom of Castile by the Reyes Católicos (Catholic Monarchs), who entered the city on 19 August 1487. Malaga’s August Fair has now become a great summer fair and has an open, cosmopolitan and international atmosphere. Some of the most important events are; the opening of the fair which is accompanied by a fireworks show; the Romería pilgrimage where horse-riders, carriages and local people accompany the fair’s flagbearer to the Santuario de la Victoria; the Feria del Centro (Central Fair), where you can taste wines and tapas in the historic streets of Malaga, accompanied by music; the Real de la Feria fairground, where booths, live performances, and fairground attractions are all brought together to create an area where visitors can have fun. The Museum Jorge Rando in Malaga is exhibiting a collection of lithographs by the British artist and sculptor Henry Moore. The series of works are entitled 'Henry Moore. Entre lo terrenal y lo eterno' (Between the earthly and the eternal) and were completed between 1971 and 1973. The new exhibition at the museum highlights one of the lesser known skills of the artist, that of a draughtsman and an engraver.

Tips to set up your Summer

We practically live outdoors in summer. There is nothing more appealing at this time of year than enjoying breakfast with the breeze in your face, lounging in the sun on the hammock and dining watching the stars. But make sure your terrace is tuned up for the summer season. Don’t forget about the terrace floor, which you can make as elegant as your interior rooms. Try using an outdoor carpet from Ikea such as Sommar 2019 in white, blue and red, green or yellow, you can give a special touch to the terrace. Packing away Make sure you purchase quality items for your terrace that are made with water, heat and cold resistant materials because those elements can do serious damage to the furniture and make them unusable for the next season. Before each tour there is a halfhour talk about the whales and dolphins in different languages. Experiencing the animals in the wild and learning about them should hopefully encourage people to actively do something for the environment. In addition to information, the foundation's other main objective is research to find out as much as possible about the fascinating marine life in the area. Therefore, accurate data is collected on each excursion. In addition, firmm offers one-week observation courses, during which you go twice a day to sea to observe the marine mammals (in case of bad weather there is an alternative program with the marine biologist). There are seven species to observe in the Strait: The fast Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis), with its beautiful yellow-grey pattern reaching up to 65 km/h, the striking blue and white Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), the Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). These can often be seen curiously close to the boat; their natural behaviour is in no way comparable to the forced tricks in the dolphinariums. Unfortunately, these intelligent and social animals are often condemned to lifelong suffering in captivity. The nocturnal Pilot Whales (Globicephala melas) are the dolphins most commonly seen in the waters off Tarifa. Furthermore, there are Sperm Whales, which belong to the best divers among the whales, especially in spring. After they have filled their large body for with oxygen for 10-15 minutes at the water surface, they can dive down to 3000 metres. Even the second largest animal in the world, the Fin Whale (the largest is the Blue Whale) regularly passes through the Strait. There are about 90 animals that travel through the Strait of Gibraltar every year, which makes a sighting a very special experience. The Fin Whale is the only baleen whale among the seven species. Orcas (Killer Whales), come in July and August to steal the Bluefin Tuna from the local fishermen.

Time saving restaurant tips and tricks Whether you are a ninja in the kitchen or just starting your cooking adventures, these tips straight from the chefs and food pros can help you spend more time on the beach and less time slaving in the kitchen! You might know some of these, or they may seem obvious but put them all together and the tips form a guide to wasting less of your precious time. Read recipes in full before starting to cook You often think you know what you are doing and neglect this vital step. Reading recipes before starting your cooking can save time.

Use the right tools Buying a good set of knives and knowing how to chop properly is essential. A sharp, well balanced knife set should include a chef's knife, a small paring knife and a serrated knife for cakes and bread. This will make chopping easier and safer and save time in the kitchen.

Choose in season ingredients Many chefs say the same, buy in season ingredients, such as meats and produce. Not only does this save you money, you don't have to do as much with the food to get the best flavours.

Don't bother peeling all produce Eat the skin!! All fruits and veggies have nutrient and fibre dense skin, so if you have a tender product don't bother peeling. Just make sure it is well washed. Carrots, sweet potatoes and beets all roast up great with skin on.

Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch The Royal British Legion, Nerja Branch, celebrated Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29 June. Armed Forces Day is an annual event to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces Community from currently serving troops to veterans, cadets and service families. Over 90 people attended the lunch held at the Al Andalus Hotel in Maro. Major Del Hamilton from the Personnel Recovery Centre ( PRC), Edinburgh, was Guest of Honour. The PRC is the Nerja Branch’s chosen charity alongside the Poppy Appeal. The PRC supports seriously injured or long term sick service personnel providing residential accommodation for 12 individuals. A cheque for 5000 Euro was presented to Major Hamilton by Chairman Eddie Bowe.

Inspirational summer exhibition "Summerjoy/ Alegria de verano" This August Spanish artist Alberto Tarsicio and Dutch artist Lieuwke Loth exhibit their art in the exhibition space 'Real 98'. Alberto Tarsicio will show oil painting impressions of the summertime sun illuminating the Spanish sea. He works with fluoride colours and is able to paint the waves and water in such a vibrant a way so that it feels like seawater splashes out of the canvas. He will also show a series of paintings of radiant flowers. Tarsicio was born and raised in the coastal area of Torre del Mar. Nowadays he is a professional artist showing his works locally and abroad. He set up a cultural centre '3Puertas' in Torre del Mar. It began as a cultural place where people could gather, and it

is now a solid base for exhibitions, live music and exchanges with artists from abroad. Tarsicio will be present in the exhibition in Frigiliana as well on some of the opening days. Lieuwke Loth is a Dutch artist based in Competa's natural park. She runs a gallery in the centre of the mountain village; "Galeria Luz de la Vida." She loves to create art, organise art events, and connect with other creative souls. She has organised the "Art Walk" for six years, and in autumn she will have her fifth International Symposium "LUZ" in Competa. She makes bronze sculptures and also lasercut metal pieces. She also draws and paints fantastic and colourful pieces. She loves traveling for inspiration and the works she makes are influenced by the cultures and countries she has explored. In this exhibition she will show primarily lasercut wall pieces. Some she designed in Uzbekistan and Thailand, others in Spain. They are made

out of stainless steel or cortensteel. The pieces can be hung outside and inside. With some light on the works, they get an extra dimension. And they can give a completely different feel to your living room, roof terrace, patio or garden! “When I was

I LOATHED myself – now I’m VERY PROUD of who I’VE BECOME” “One morning, at the end of a drinking binge, I’d spent all my money, maxed out my credit cards, it was hot outside, but I couldn’t face going back to see my girlfriend or family to get some rest,” says Andrew, a 43-year-old business executive. “So I went to my car parked in the underground parking lot, but realised I couldn’t drive as I could barely walk. I sat there, wanting to be alone and isolate myself from everyone and everything. “Then I cried and cried and contemplated ending my life – but realised I didn’t have the courage or the means to do it. If I’d had a gun in the car, I would have probably used it on myself. “That was one rock bottom I had that was caused by my drinking and the way I lived then, but there were several others – including watching my girlfriend and mother cry because they didn’t know what to do and their love for me didn’t seem to be enough to stop me doing what I was doing to myself.” It’s frequently unfathomable like this to people who care about someone drinking too much. But likewise as Andrew explains, the person drinking often doesn’t know why they do it, or continue despite vowing never to touch another drop. “I always made excuses before about stopping and I blamed everyone else, especially those closest to me. I thought I was going crazy as I really didn’t want to go out on another bender, but found myself doing it over and over again anyway. “I would often come in to the office with virtually no sleep, and sit at my desk physically ill from the binge, hands shaking, avoiding eye contact with my colleagues, hoping that if I kept to myself long enough no one would notice…” Growing up, Andrew had seen his parents drink especially at parties they had hosted. He’d also experienced rage and constant criticism, particularly from his father. Andrew started drinking aged 11 – “to escape my life and change the way I felt”. Aged 18, he also used illegal drugs for the first time, starting with marijuana, then ecstasy, ketamine, psychedelic mushrooms, opiates, and finally lots of cocaine. He realises now that as he got older he also used relationships, sex, eating and work in the same manner. “My aunt was the first person who showed concern about my drinking when I was just 18,” says Andrew, now settled on the Costa del Sol near Marbella. “I brushed that off as nonsense. But looking back on my drinking and drugging career, it was always a problem almost as far back as I can remember: the only real thing that I consistently looked forward to was the next bender. “However, I only realised it was a problem much later in life, aged 34: I’d met someone and didn’t want ‘that life’ any longer, but found myself – despite my own will – going back to it over and over again with increasingly worsening consequences to myself and people around me. “After probably hundreds of successive unsuccessful attempts 42 THE MARKET PLACE

to control my drinking, a few violent incidents, a relationship that was falling apart, at risk of being fired professionally for regular tardiness and poor results, deeply in debt, the tears of my mother and concern of all my family, I finally agreed to speak to someone about it.” He saw three therapists, without any result. Then someone introduced him to a member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). “At my first AA meeting I was surprised at how many people there were, and how ‘normal’ they were. I had no idea what it was going to be like, but I went only because one of the people I met prior to going to my first meeting suggested it was ‘just information’ that I would find there. I liked that idea. “I was also surprised at how welcoming and non-judgemental people were. It gave me a place where I could breathe, a place where I felt safe and loved. “Now I’ve been free from alcohol and all mind-altering substances since June 2012. I also realised I had to stop any other behaviours that I’d used to change the way I felt – if not, it wouldn’t be long before I drank or used drugs again. “The 12 Steps we do in AA are an amazing path for coping with life and learning to have a happy life, sober. In fact, I would rather be a sober alcoholic with the 12 Steps, than be a non-alcoholic drinker without them as they have profoundly changed my life and the way I look at the world. “When I was drinking I loathed myself. Life’s infinitely better now, and I am very proud of the person I’ve become.” Andrew’s message to someone who might be struggling with alcohol is a clear: “Ask for help by calling the AA Helpline, or reach out to someone who you’ve heard goes to AA and is sober, go to a meeting, and keep going to meetings. Things will definitely get better if you do those things.” AA is located along the entire Costa del Sol and there is a meeting with friendly people who will understand your problems somewhere near you every day.

Natural ways to keep your hair healthy in summer Condition always

Rinse with apple cider vinegar diluted in water for a quick natural conditioner. Use a little coconut oil or shea butter to smooth, de-frizz, and moisturize your locks after washing. No more swimmer’s hair If you’re a blond who turns green after a dip in the pool, try rinsing out your wet hair with ¼ cup apple cider vinegar and 2 cups water to get rid of discolouration and dullness. Add some sunscreen There are shampoos that contain UV protection, but most of those are chemical-laden. Simply run your hands lightly through your hair after applying sunscreen to your body.

Wear a hat Cover your head when you’re out in the sun. It gives UV protection and helps your scalp to retain moisture.

Wash hair less often Frequent washing strips your scalp of its natural oils, which stimulates additional oil production and makes you feel the need to wash it even more. Just rinse in the shower after a day at the beach or pool with a natural dry shampoo, to go longer without washing.

Reduce the heat Blow-dry your hair as little as possible. It will air-dry quickly anyway.

Try a hot oil rinse Coconut, olive, and avocado oils are good at penetrating the hair shaft. Shampoo hair as usual, then work in oil from ends to roots. Rinse, then condition as usual. Your hair should feel moisturized afterward, but not greasy.

Feria de Málaga Thursday 15th of August until Saturday 24th 2019.

The Malaga Fair is a festival that takes place in two parts; one during the day which is located in the downtown area of Malaga and the night fair which takes place at El Real, near the Exhibition and Conference Centre. It is an important event on the Costa del Sol attracting around two million visitors, who come to enjoy the various events and activities for all ages. The majority of Andalucian fairs owe their origins to the ancient cattle fairs that took place in the biggest cities. That being said, the Málaga fair owes its origins to an historical event. This comes from the conquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs, on 19th August 1487 returning the image of the Patron Saint of the city, Virgen de la Victoria, back to the Malagueños. After being declared a popular festivity on August 15th, 1491 (a date when the Assumption of the Virgin is worshipped by Catholics worldwide) the celebrations

continued annually. Each year more and more processions and shows, as well as bullfights, were added to the event. Nowadays, the Malaga Fair incorporates these two key dates, commemorating the important history of the capital. Two events you can’t miss out on during the Feria de Malaga are the Romería to the Church of Santa María de la Victoria and the historic parade. The Romería takes place the first Saturday of the Malaga Fair and it consists of a procession starting from

This parade celebrates the delivery of the city flag to the sanctuary mentioned above. The ‘Pregón de la Feria’ officially starts the Feria. The pregón is a speech made by a celebrity from Malaga that takes place at the beach of La Malagueta. When midnight strikes, a magnificent firework show launches the celebrations. The best place to enjoy this is from the port of Malaga.

During the Day Fair you will find large numbers of people, from tourists to locals, who all flock to the centre of Malaga to enjoy good food and drink, and to soak up the atmosphere. The downtown streets, especially Calle Larios are decorated beautifully for the duration of the fair. The best time to pay a visit to the city centre is from midday to 5 pm when the streets are filled with Flamenco dancers, singers, and people wearing the typical Flamenco costumes. Enjoy the amazing smell of jasmine, tapas, and enjoy

the delicious Cartojal, the typical sweet wine of Malaga.

Fairground There are activities during the day and night every day of the week at the fairground. The Night Fair which is held at â&#x20AC;&#x153;El Realâ&#x20AC;?, is located near the Exhibition and Conference Centre. This fair is characterized by the large number of rides for all ages and a more comfortable temperature than the day fair. At the fairground you'll find more than 200 stalls serving traditional food, fast food and bars with all kinds of music. Entrance to the stalls are free, as long as you are dressed appropriately (not wearing swimsuits etc). If you are going to visit you have many options for a fun filled day and long evening. How to get to the Malaga Fair There is a special bus service operated from Malaga centre and various points of the Costa del Sol and there is also an extended subway schedule. For the duration of the fair the bus is the best way to move from one event to the other, by jumping on Line F (operating 24 hours a day). for rehoming with Simba being very energetic and Arturo being deaf. However, in May Simba was reserved for adoption in Sweden thanks to a cooperative effort with APA, the other animal charity in Nerja, who shares CAS dogs on their networks. This posed a slight dilemma for the kennels because the boys were quite close and if Simba left Arturo would have to find a new playmate. Luckily, a retired couple from Almunecar brought their two dogs into kennels for a holiday and they inquired about Arturo because they had an affinity for Podenco dogs. When they heard his best mate was leaving they decided to adopt Simba Arturo and he went home with the couple and his two new brothers on 12 July. Three days later Simba flew to his forever family in Sweden and both boys are now living happily in their new homes.

Hector was rescued by a caring Spanish man in June and brought to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) with a badly broken leg and open wound. He also suffered from severe nerve damage in the injured leg so the vet decided the best course of treatment was amputation. Within two weeks after surgery, Hector was up and running around on three legs and playing with the larger dogs in kennels. After he received his puppy vaccinations Hector was featured in the CAS News last month and the power of print media proved itself useful again. (Thank you to all of the kind editors who provide us valuable space in their publications pro bono out of the goodness of their hearts.) A loving English couple who were staying in Nerja read about Hectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plight and made enquiries with CAS about the possibly of adopting the pup. The couple visited Hector several times during their holiday and immediately fell in love with him so the adoption was finalized before they returned to England. Arrangements have been made for Hector Kylie to travel to the UK by ground transport Kylie, Pedro, Gringo and Georgio were and he will be reunited with his new a group of four dogs that CAS took on family on the first of August. earlier this year to help an overburdened rescue centre in Mijas. The group was HAPPY TALES vaccinated and neutered before they went into kennels and advertised for adoption across a variety of formats. Pedro was adopted first and has become the companion of a sweet lady in Nerja. Kylie was chosen by a family in Sweden who saw her on Facebook and after jumping through some hoops to prepare for travel she went to her forever home last month. Gringo was shared by a Dutch charity and has been reserved for adoption by a nice couple in Holland and he is waiting for his flight in early September, leaving just his brother Arturo Georgio waiting in kennels for a chance at a new life. Honey Fortune seemed to shine on Honey when she was reserved for a new home in Holland last month but in the end the adoption fell through after our Dutch partners performed a home check. In cases where animals are rehomed abroad it is that much more important to check out the potential adopter because if things do not work out, the dog cannot be returned once it flies to another country. Honey is a happy dog who loves her cuddles and gets along great with others as she is playful and not a dominant personality. She is about one and a half years old and now that she has matured will be spayed later this month. Honey is quite affectionate so we think she would make a wonderful addition to any family. CAS CAT NEWS Each month the Costa Animal Society (CAS) allocates E500 to help the homeless kitten and cat population in Nerja, Maro and the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately in the process of rescuing our feline friends and providing for the stable cat colonies that we are aware of those funds are quickly exhausted. Examples of costs incurred include: food, blood tests, neutering, vaccinations, treatment for worms, fleas and ticks, microchipping and providing the cats with passports for rehoming abroad. If foster homes cannot be found, kenneling costs can quickly escalate. Thus, the adding machine tape runs on and on. Life on the streets for a homeless cat is one of constant danger and a tireless quest for food and shelter. TAIL Torrox We charity people tend to go on about all the cruelty and lack of care shown to dogs and other animals. However during the early summer months it has really come into focus that this is down to the older generation and principally those of farming backgrounds. Whilst this still holds true it has been a pleasure to see so many youngsters and young families with a dog in tow. You see them on the streets accompanying their owners out shopping, or making a trip to a cafe or to the seaside, frequently early evening taking a slow constitutional along the paseo maritimo. How pleasing and normal this seems, it is visible how the dogs are loved.

Just maybe the visits and talks by Tail volunteers have made to local schools – thank you Mario – have had an effect. Add to that the assimilation into the community of so many foreigners with their families, which nearly always includes a pet or two are having a subconscious beneficial effect. This is all a pleasing and encouraging thought but sadly Tail is still receiving many damaged and abandoned dogs and desperately needs funds. In just the last two weeks we have paid out e2000 for just one operation (highly complicated) and also had to put down

Apricot, who had major surgery this week. one dog so badly damaged that the vet was unable to save her. And so it goes on. Please support Tail fundraising. Thank you.

We are Torrox Animal Internation League (TAIL), a local charity/ refuge set in Torrox. Our goals are to rescue and rehome abandoned and maltreated dogs and work to educate local community about dog care and neutering. was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
