The perfect beach day on the Greek island of Antiparos Antiparos was sort of an accident. We didn’t plan on it being our absolute favourite beach in Greece, nor did we even plan on going there in the first place, but I’m glad we did. Here’s how we happened upon this dreamy island spot. By Jessica Infantino Trumble

O

n this particular leg of our trip we were actually staying on the neighboring island of Paros. Our original plan was to take the bus to Pounta Beach on the west coast (not to be confused with the party Pounda Beach on the east) and put our balance and coordination skills to the test with a little stand up paddling (aka SUP for those in the know). We had scoped out a company online, noting important details like location and hours, but when we got off the bus we were disappointed to find that the shop was closed without a soul in sight. So too was the beach area, completely empty sans a few kite surfers off in the distance. We did however find ourselves face to face with the dock for the ferry to the island of Antiparos, located just over a mile away. So like any resourceful and agile traveller we decided to wait

for the next boat in hopes of finding the “perfect” beach there. In general, ferries in Greece are a great way to get between islands, and this one was no exception. We bought our tickets as we boarded the boat, asking for directions to the closest beach, and in less than 15 minutes we had arrived in Antiparos. After a hard left and 5 minute walk from the harbour, we found exactly what we were looking for. Psaralyki Beach was a casual and unpolished retreat, with small golden rocks taking the place of sand and frizzy tamarisk trees lining its shore to provide just the right amount of shade. The beach felt relatively quiet and secluded too, despite its close proximity to the dock. We spotted a stack of metal beach chairs, grabbed 2 and spread out the (overlypriced and extremely thin) beach towels we purchased earlier that morning at a souvenir shop. Soon enough a wellworn, leathery man came by to collect the 3 euro rental fee – a small price to pay for a day of relaxation. The water was so warm and crystal-clear that we could see right through its blue-green hue to the bottom. Large flat rocks kept the depth shallow, which allowed us to walk out a ways before it dropped off. continued on page 10

THE MARKET PLACE 9

Any mild disappointment from earlier in the day was squashed when we noticed a small shack on the other end of the beach with watersport equipment, including stand up paddle boards. After a quick lesson that made it look significantly easier than it was, we were off on our own to SUP along the beach. At one point I got pulled out by the tide, which I could only describe as a mild comedy of errors as I attempted to regain control and paddle back towards the shore. We paid 15 euros for a 30-minute rental, which turned out to be just enough time to get a good first sampling of the sport before the wind kicked up even more. Our SUP adventure was equal parts challenging and fun, requiring a good sense of balance and humour, and something I would definitely try again, but in calmer water. ;) When we eventually reached our capacity of water and sun for the day, we decided to spend the remainder of the afternoon walking around Antiparos’ main town. As expected, it had all of the elements of a picturesque Greek island village – winding stone-paved streets, whitewashed buildings draped with bright pink bougainvillea flowers and lots of little shops to explore. And of course we couldn’t resist trying “the best gyros on the island” before catching the ferry back to Paros. Looking back, of all of the different beaches we visited in Greece, our experience on Antiparos was truly paradise found – even if it did happen as sort of an accident.

If you want to visit Antiparos on purpose, here’s everything you need to know: Bus: Buses run between Parakia

and Pounta Beach throughout the day, so check ktelparou.gr for weekly timetables; You can purchase return tickets for 1.80 euros from the vending machine in the snack bar patio directly

across from the ferry dock in Pounta.

Ferry: Individual tickets can be purchased for 3 euros as you board the boat (tickets and transport are also available for vehicles including cars, mopeds and ATVs); Ferries typically depart both docks every half hour, so check the schedule online or the posted signs for an accurate timetable. Antiparos: The island of Anitparos boasts 57 km (35 miles) of coastline with countless beaches, as well as other sites including a 15th century Venetian Castle, the Cave of Antiparos and more.

Psaralyki Beach: A 5 minute walk from the harbour in Antiparos where you’ll find Spot One for SUP and windsurfing gear rentals and lessons, as well as beach chairs for rent and a small snack cart selling food and water.

Currency Transfers: Top Solutions

For many expats living in Spain, it’s sometimes necessary to make currency transfers. Even if you have no assets “back home” you may want to send a cash birthday gift or even clear your son/daughter’s overdraft. We’ve looked at the cheapest and best ways to make an international transfer. Specialist Currency Transfer Companies by MoneySaverSpain.com

Depending on why you want to make a currency transfer, the method you decide to use should vary. Don’t stick with the same provider every time. We’ve taken a look at online-only currency transfers websites, prepaid currency cards, dedicated currency transfer companies and the fallback solution (your bank).

Online-only Currency Transfers The number of people using money transfer websites has increased exponentially in the last couple of years. Main sites are TransferWise, Transfer Go and World Remit. All multilingual sites offer an online-only currency transfer service with low fees. The websites are really easy to use, you’ll need to upload photo ID for security reasons, so make sure to have it scanned beforehand. With all companies register first and before finalising your transfer details check your email – you may receive a discount code to send your first transfer for free. All three companies are registered with the UK Financial Conduct Authority; company accounts are totally separate to clients’ money, meaning that if any company goes bankrupt your money is safe.

There are a multitude of currency transfer companies. Many are specialists in UK-Spain-UK transfers with offices in several coastal towns in Spain. Take a look at Currencies Direct, Global Reach, XE Money, TorFX and see which company is best suited for your needs when sending money to Spain. The advantage of using a specialist company is that you’ll have access to an account manager who you’ll be able to speak to directly and ask for advice. This is especially useful when you have to carry out large transfers (for example to purchase a house or car). Currency transfer companies can offer better rates than a bank. The latter offers many services, currencies being a very minor one, so banks don’t tend to be competitive. Additionally a dedicated currency transfer company can set up regular payments for you if you still need to pay a mortgage in your home country or have children studying abroad.

Use Your Bank Of course, the easy solution is to use your bank but it will nearly always be a lot more expensive than any of the options above. Beware of banks that state that their transfers are commission free. If the exchange rate is poor you’ll actually end up getting less for your money.

Multi Currency Accounts and Cards

Conclusion

If you travel often between countries with different currencies, then a good option would be to open a multi currency account and request a debit card that is normally free for basic account holders.

Each solution has its merits; for the majority of people using their local bank is not going to be the most favourable. It’s up to you to compare and decide which is best for your own personal circumstances.

Xoom (by PayPal) A new service launched in 2019, Xoom offers international money transfers. Their online fees and exchange rate calculator will help you see how much you will pay in commission; this will depend on your payment method, how much you send, the country of destination, and whether the money is to be deposited in an account or collected in cash. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

Remember that all these companies have to comply with international laws to avoid money laundering. You’ll have to provide at least a copy of your photo ID/passport, and possibly more documentation. Tip: where possible set up two-factor authentication: when you log in a code will be sent to your mobile and helps avoid fraudulent use of your account and personal data.

Celebrating 20 years of Muebles Piramides furniture store in Caleta!

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the trusted furniture store Muebles Piramides in Caleta de Velez. This month we interview Per Stridh, the owner of the store, about the business and what the future holds. 1) Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you came to be involved in the business?

20th Anniversary Party at Muebles Piramides Thursday 10th October

Well, Benny opened the original shop in 1999 with Søren, 20 years ago this year. I took over the business two and a half years ago in January 2017, so this is a relatively new chapter for me. I came to Spain in 2001 and I am married to a Spanish lady, so I am now well used to Spanish life and business here. Søren and I had an agreement that when he wanted to go back and live in Denmark, I would take over the business.

Come and join us to celebrate our 20 year anniversary! Come and meet and chat to our team of staff including the original owner Søren, and Per the current owner. Open from 10am to 8pm.

2) Where do you see the future of the business?

n Free Food

I want to keep the basics of the business because it has been successful for so long, so things should not change too much. We work with 25 different providers and this will remain the same. However, we have started working with 3-4 new product lines; a new garden furniture company, a bed company, a company that sells paintings and a decoration provider. I like to try new things and see if they work well.

n Drinks

We are also updating our technological side of things by developing our facebook site so that we can interact closely with clients and use some marketing strategies. We are developing a new website which will be in Spanish and English and from September customers will be able to order online for the first time. Most of the products are on the website but there is a lot more to offer too if clients browse at the store.

3) What is unique about your business compared to your competitors, like Ikea and traditional local furniture stores? We have a very good personal customer service and excellent staff that speak all the languages necessary to attend to our customers. We speak the Scandinavian languages, English, German and Spanish of course. 14 THE MARKET PLACE

n Jazz Band from 1pm to 3pm n Special Discounts on purchases n Anniversary Offers n Special Anniversary prize draw *If you make a purchase of more than 100 euros on the day, there will be 3 prizes to win. 1st - A leather relax chair and foot stool, 2nd - a garden furniture set, 3rd - a new duvet and pillow set. The type of furniture that we offer is also different, it has cleaner lines and is of great quality, completely different to the furniture that is on offer here in Spain! Many English and Scandinavian customers are looking for cleaner lines and not the clumpy, boxey type items. We can also go to a customers' home if necessary to take a look and offer suggestions. We always offer delivery and assembly to clients included in the

price that we quote. The way that the delivery guys do their job is exceptional, I am always receiving compliments via email about what a good job they have made. We receive a lot of repeat clients and clients from recommendations, which is of course one of the cheapest and best forms of advertising. One product line that is unique is our bed measurements where we can offer larger sizes of mattresses such as 2.10m by 2.10m - people love these!

4) Everybody knows it is not easy running a business in Spain. How have you stood the test of time, through the recession, etc.? It was difficult but we survived! I started once things had stablilised. But I know because I spoke with the previous owner, Søren that they had to make cutbacks by going through all costs/invoices and fixed costs to see what was necessary and what had to go. The company also renegotiated the terms with many of the providers, such as publicity. However, the stable client base helped a lot through the recession, people trusted in the company and came in and still made purchases.

5) Have you found things picking up since you joined the company? There has been a lot of construction work taking place in

Caleta recently, has that helped?

pass by and it is very visible.

We have been growing steadily since 2012. The new constructions along the coast have been helping a lot and next year the construction opposite the store will be finished and we have already sold furniture to clients that have purchased properties there.

8) What are your day to day responsibilities as the business owner?

6) What is the most important factor in your business? For me the key thing to this business is the employees that we have here. They offer amazing customer service and can converse in the language of choice for our customers. The workplace is a great place to be, there is always a friendly uplifting atmosphere and we like to try and have a little fun along the way. So my thanks go out to Benny, Sonja, Daniella in the store and Adrian, Oliver and Frank who make deliveries.

I am very hands on and I get involved in everything! I try not to do too many sales now as I don't have as much time for it, but I still serve my regular clients or Swedish clients because I can converse in Swedish. My day starts at 8am at the warehouse and ends at 8pm or later!

9) Have you made any mistakes that you wish you could have avoided? Mistakes are a normal part of every day working life but my ethos is that if they are made we should learn from them so they are not repeated.

10) How do you relax after a busy

Car News by Martin Ward

Isuzu D-MAX Import Centre 2019

We started the day in Maidstone in Kent, left the hotel we had stayed in overnight and set off in a fleet of Isuzu -D-MAX Pick-ups Double Cabs. For the first part of the journey I was on the rear seat and did expect it to be a bumpy and uncomfortable ride, being in a truck, with truck suspension. But it was better than I expected. Not bad at all. Not sure if I would have said the same if I had travelled back up home the 240 miles to Huddersfield sat in the back, but it really wasn’t as I had expected. Isuzu only make trucks. No cars, just trucks of varying sizes, and because they only know how to make a truck and don’t have to share components with cars like some other manufacturers have to, then everything is ‘over-engineered’, made to last, and is capable of anything asked of it. The D-MAX has been on the market since 2002 and since then has been improved, and improved constantly. A couple of years ago, Isuzu took the controversial decision to drop the 2.5-litre diesel engine and replace it with a more economical 1.9-litre diesel: shock, horror, thought

16 THE MARKET PLACE

many. This was done for many reasons, mainly due to emissions and other technical factors. The farmers threw their hands up, shook their heads and said it wouldn’t work. We did the launch of the new 1.9 and Isuzu also had the 2.5 there. The new smaller engine proved to be far superior in every aspect than the good old 2.5. Since then it has sold well, including to hardened farmers, and Isuzu have never looked back - or the farming fraternity. After the road trip we went to a farm where there was an offroad course, including some fairly steep uphill and downhill sections, through a small river and through some tight wooded areas. The D-MAX was more capable of doing much more dynamic testing and only did a fraction of what it really could do off-road. It was all pretty tame for this 4x4. It has a system that allows you to put it into 4x4 Low, and will go up any hill, down any hill, whatever the gradient. You don’t touch any pedal, the truck automatically finds

the right speed and finds the right amount of traction, all you have to do is steer it. It's clever stuff, and does give you confidence in the vehicle. After the farm it was back on the road, and a short drive to the Import Centre at Sheerness. The cars arrive from the factory in Thailand at the docks and are transported the short distance to the Isuzu compound. This is a fairly new facility, and everything has been thought out in great detail. They have learned over the years to leave bigger gaps between the vehicles, both at the side, front and rear, as this causes less damage with doors opening, especially when its windy, as the wind can catch the doors and cause small dents. And the wind can certainly blow near the coast in Kent. There is a ‘no-blame’ policy in place for all the workers if a car gets accidentally damaged. It is up to the driver to report immediately any damage so it can be repaired, and not left until the car is sold and ready to leave the centre, when a

panic is likely to occur. Isuzu now offer a one-stopshop for all conversions, and these conversions are wide and vast. Most of the conversions are done onsite, either by Isuzu staff, or more frequently by the converters themselves. But if it is converted on-site, with the full approval of Isuzu, then it has the full 125,000, 5-year warranty. Some of the conversions we saw ranged from just a towbar, a rear-canopy, right up to Access Platforms (cherrypickers), full recovery vehicles, fully-kitted out Police vehicles, Fire-engines, tippers, and fully equipped workshops. Basically, as Isuzu say "if you have a problem we can fix it". They will build just about anything that anyone wants. Isuzu is really a little known manufacturer to most, but those who do know them do really like, and understand what they do, and what the vehicles are capable of. A great day out, and I learned so much. Very interesting and informative.

Do you stay in the old town in the prestigious Carabeo area, just on the outskirts of the town in Capistrano Village, or down the hill near Burriana beach? Decisions decisions! Whatever your personal choice, you will need to find suitable accommodation. Thousands of people are opting to rent an apartment or villa rather than paying for a hotel. And who can blame them. More space. Home comforts. Good value. Convenient locations. Sounds perfect. Now comes the big search. Where do you start? Well, there are dozens of Nerja estate agents, travel websites, holiday search engines, magazine adverts, private rentals, and obviously the 18 THE MARKET PLACE

big holiday rental websites. The list is endless. And with endless choice comes hours, even days of trawling through all the different estate agents and rental websites trying to find the perfect place. Finally you find it. All that searching has paid off. The perfect location. The perfect size. The perfect amenities. The perfect pool. The

Of course, how could you forget the booking fees and service fees levied on each booking by the big rental websites. All of a sudden the perfect rental property doesn’t seem so perfect after all.

What do you do now? Do you book it, blow your budget, and have less to spend on holiday? Or alternatively, do you go back to the drawing board and spend hours or days trying to find something a little more modest, always subconsciously comparing it to the perfect place that was just out of your price range because of that pesky website booking fee? Well, imagine booking that perfect property, then taking the booking fee or service fee you were about to be charged, and spending it on a delicious meal with friends and family instead. Imagine the warm breeze, the sound of the sea, the laughter with loved ones, the tasty tapas, and something cold and cheeky to wash it all down. Now imagine you could have saved yourself hours of trawling through multiple websites or saved days waiting for estate agents to respond back with property details. That sounds just perfect to me. And it is possible.

NerjaHolidayHomes.com

reasons. We wanted to bring together a single website where you can search for Nerja holiday rental properties without having to contact each estate agent or property owner individually. You save money because you don’t have to pay booking fees or service charges to the big holiday rental websites. Then sit

back, relax, and imagine how you might treat yourself with the money you saved booking your perfect holiday, in your perfect rental property in beautiful Nerja.

Now that sounds perfect to me.

Everything you need to know about salt water pools Saltwater pools are gaining in popularity over traditional chlorinated pools. It is no wonder because they have far greater benefits in terms of economy and the health of the swimmer. Are you thinking of changing your pool to include a salt chlorinator? Here we give you some information in order to consider the option. How do saltwater pools work? Salt water pools use chlorinators, devices that are integrated into the filtration system. These devices are able to take advantage of salt water to generate gaseous chlorine by electrolysis. This chlorine will automatically dissolve in the water and disinfect it. Once the salt chlorinator is installed in the purification system, it will dilute from 4 to 6 kilos of salt per m3. When the water passes through the electrodes it will become sodium hypochlorite, killing any type of organic matter that is contained in the water. After this, it will be transformed back into salt.

Saltwater pools, a very ecological option Before talking about any other type of advantage, it is essential to highlight first that salt water pools are very ecological. The passage of salt to hypochlorite and vice versa is completely clean, ecological and respectful of nature. If you are one of those who care about the environment, this type of swimming pool will undoubtedly be for you.

Savings on the maintenance of salt water pools Perhaps one of the advantages that attracts the most attention is the considerable savings in the maintenance of saltwater pools. The consumption of chemical products is greatly reduced because the process of converting salt into sodium hypochlorite is sufficient to keep the pool water healthy. In addition, by automating the process you will also save on maintenance time. Keep in mind that water evaporates, but not salt. You will only have losses of salt when leaving and entering the pool, which is a tiny amount. If you use water without too much lime and you have a good system the maintenance will be almost nil. Thus, adjustments only need to be made to make sure everything is working correctly a couple of times during the summer.

Health benefits Yes, salt water pools are also good for your health. The water is much softer and less aggressive on the skin than in chlorinated pools. The skin does not itch and

there will be no reddening of eyes from too much chlorine. In addition, it also protects the hair, does not damage swimsuits and makes tanning of the skin more natural. The installation of saline chlorination requires the installation of an automatic PH regulation system. Otherwise, you will need to check the water daily and add extra products yourself. In addition to the extra time required, it could be more expensive doing this.

Installation cost The biggest drawback is usually the price of the installation of saline chlorination and the regulation of PH. In a medium-sized pool it is usually around 1,000 to 3,000 euros. Despite this initial outlay, it should be considered an investment, since in the long term a higher quality water is achieved and the expenditure of chemical products is greatly reduced. It is important to evaluate this option with a professional who will advise the appropriate equipment for your pool - cutting corners could lead to problems in the future and higher expenses.

Other options for chlorine free pools What is on the market other than saltwater pools? There are other options on the market that you could consider. For example, you can have water purifiers, which can be powered electrically or by solar energy. They reduce chlorine by up to 80%, killing bacteria and algae by electrolysis. You can also opt for bromine or ultraviolet disinfection, which is the system used in many spas. Finally, if you want a really special and ecologically friendly pool, you could consider a natural pool, where water is purified by the use of aquatic plants!

12,000 kilometres through the United States in a 1953 Packard Convertible It all started one evening in 2016 when I discussed Route 66 with some friends. After some deliberation, I declared that if I ever were to drive Route 66, I would do it in a Packard. A plan evolved: buy a Packard, drive and visit relatives and friends, then drive Route 66 and Highway 1 to San Francisco. Then finally ship the car back home to Spain in a container. Now it was time to decide what kind of a car I wanted. I already had a 22nd Series Eight Deluxe Club Sedan and a 1956 Clipper Super 2-door Hardtop so the choice was rather simple: Something between the two. A 1951-54 Convertible with Continental Kit. I found a 1953 on the web. It was with a dealer in Detroit, but the price was far too high. The price came down some over the next several weeks and then it was offered on eBay, with a reserve. I made sure to win the auction, but my final bid was well below the reserve. Now it was time to negotiate and I got the car at a reasonable price. This was in November 2016. In January 2017 the car was hauled from the seller to the restoration shop in New Jersey that my contact Ole Böök uses. The car was subjected to a rebuild with focus on the mechanicals, as it had to endure a long journey. A new cable harness was installed, as was a new exhaust system and tyres. The engine had good compression so the only thing done was a normal tune-up and flushing the cooling system. The day arrived. Thursday, August 3rd, 2017. I quit smoking (still not smoking!), took a flight from Malaga to Barcelona and on to Newark, New Jersey. On the morning of the 4th I was picked up at the hotel by Ole Böök and we arranged all the necessary papers and got an American SIM card for my phone. Then out to the workshop in Hopatcong, which is about 1 hour drive west from North Bergen where Ole lives. The car looked fantastic and ran very well on the test drive. We went through everything and it was time for departure. I intended to drive to

22 THE MARKET PLACE

Clearfield which is about halfway to Warren, Ohio (where Packard began in the late 1800s). It was 360 km to drive. At the workshop I was told that I could cruise at 70 m.p.h. with the car. They were wrong. It ran hot and I had to stop and let it cool a bit. Then I ended up in queues due to an accident and it started to rain and get dark. With the lights on, the charging lamp flickered. “I don’t want to be stationary with a black car without the lights here in the dark” I thought and turned off towards a sign with an 'H' about 140 km before Clearfield. 'H' does not mean hotel in the United States. It means Hospital. You always learn something new. I drove and drove. The road became smaller and smaller, passing through deep forest. I stopped and searched for hotels on my TomTom. I found one a few miles ahead. It was not a hotel but turned out to be a local bar with only locals gathered around the bar. I had a feeling that I heard a banjo playing in the background... The bartender said

I should continue on, turn right and then there would probably be some motel, (surely Bates Motel I thought as I went out to the car). Once in the car I picked up my TomTom from the floor and placed it in its holder. The US map was no longer available on it! No need to panic. I have my iPhone with a new USA SIM card. I pick up the phone to see: no coverage! Well, I must drive as the bartender said, I thought, and started turning the car around in the parking lot. Then a man came out from the bar. He stopped me and said "Don’t go where they told you! At the end of the road you have to turn left. Then after a while there’s a bridge. Cross it and there will be some traffic lights. Turn right and you should find a hotel there". Now I’m starting to get a little bit nervous, but he said traffic lights so it probably means a town. I did as he said. Found the bridge and the traffic lights but no hotel. Checked the phone and now I had coverage. Searched “hotels nearby” with booking.com and found a Best Western 15-20 mins further away. Eventually I checked in and I slept well! The next day my TomTom got its US map back and the journey continued. Next stop Warren, Ohio. When leaving I-80 at Youngstown I sensed that something was not right. When stopping, I had to put the gear into neutral to prevent the engine from stalling. I managed to make it to the Packard museum, past many traffic lights, shifting between N and D. On the museum door was a sign: "Welcome to the National Packard Museum Jan Alvemark!" That felt good after all the problems. The museum called a Packard guy, Michael Yost, and he came over to continued on page 24

had some trouble with kidney stones. I visited a hospital in Shamrock, Texas. Good thing that I had insurance: Two hours at the hospital was $ 2,700. On to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where we stayed at a classic Route 66 motel, Sandia Park Inn. After checking in we got keys to our room and started unpacking. The hotel owner came by and said that with that nice a car, we deserved a suite at no extra cost. The next detour was made to Las Vegas to meet up with a couple of friends from Sweden. We would stay at Luxor and my friends stayed at the Bellagio. When we arrived at the hotel, there was no Bell-boy and no trolleys to carry our luggage. My friend stayed at the car while I checked in because there was parking prohibited where we had parked beside 5-6 VIP parking. I had already checked in via the internet so I got the keys immediately. My friend who was standing by the car had come across a woman who turned out to be Vice President of Marketing for Luxor Hotel. She originally came from Chicago. She thought it was sooo nice that we drove all the way from Chicago in this nice Packard. However, I expressed my dissatisfaction that there were no luggage carts and that I should be allowed to park in the VIP car park. She said it would be difficult as they had a big boxing match that night and were expecting VIP guests. However, she said - wait here for a few minutes. She came back with a Bell-Boy with a trolley plus a note for the car which said we could have it in the VIP car park during our stay at the hotel. We went and picked up my friends along the Las Vegas strip and went to Counts Custom. There, of course, we bought t-shirts and my friends had to go to the hotel with them before we started having fun. So we went to Bellagio. Strict parking ban at the entrance. We saw that there was limousine parking there so I parked the car along the sidewalk in front of the limousines. One of the guys ran up to the room while the rest of us stayed in the car. After about 10 minutes, a man in a suit came and said that he was responsible for this part of the hotel and pointed out that it is absolutely forbidden to park where we were. But he also said that he saw how the hotel’s guests appreciated the Packard so we were ok to stay for a while.

After Las Vegas we continued on to Los Angeles and Santa Monica Pier where Route-66 ends and then to Long Beach to stay a couple of nights at Queen Mary. There, I would also visit the freight forwarder’s office, which would ship the car to Spain. Everything was arranged for shipping from San Francisco. Now it was time for Pacific Coast Highway 1 so the journey continued south to San Diego where we stayed for a couple of nights before we started our journey back north towards San Francisco. We got in trouble with the car running hot again, the day before we arrived at Carmel by the Sea. The rest of the trip I drove very carefully but at least I drove up and down some steep slopes in San Francisco as well as the Golden Gate Bridge in both directions. My friend went home a day before me and I laid in bed in the hotel with kidney stones again. I returned to Spain on October 2nd after two fantastic months on the road in the US with a 1953

Packard Convertible. I have many fond memories and the insight that you are always welcomed and well cared for when driving a Packard. Total distance covered in the United States: 7364 miles /11850 km. After the car was shipped over to Spain and the registration process started, I thought I could drive it a bit here in Europe as well. I thought about sending it by truck to Copenhagen or Gothenburg and then drive in Sweden to Bornholm (for a Packard meeting), Germany-France and down through Spain. Now the registration of the car took so long that I could not send the car by truck. Instead, I asked my friend David Geddes at Team Noria to come along and drive the car to Copenhagen and then fly back from there. Said and done. David and I left Nerja on Saturday morning, June 9 2018 at 8am. First stop Biarritz in France, about 1000 km. The next day we drove to Mons in Belgium, 1020 km. On the last day we drove to the

A Packard owner in Germany claimed to have seen a black 1953 Packard Convertible driving 120 km/h on the Autobahn on Monday. It must have been when I slept in the back seat! Then I drove Copenhagen-GothenburgLidköping-Järvsö-Uppsala (from here Jörgen Ebbersten joined me), Kristianstad-Bornholm (DK) -Hildesheim (D) -Beaune (F) -Sète (F) -Sitges (ES) -Nerja (ES ). Finally I arrived back in Nerja at midnight on July 7 after a terrible last day of driving at 50-60 km/h due to the car running hot. Thank you Jörgen for driving most of that part. Total trip in Europe: 5700 miles/9170 km. (Note: Miles indicated in Packard miles on the odometer. You can probably deduct about 5-8%).

Local News Local News Local News Local News Baviera Golf under new ownership

This was announced by the president of the Diputacion de Malaga, Francisco Salado. He explained that this money is unconditional financing, so that the local municipalities can dedicate the amount they receive to the actions they deem most necessary in their zone.

with complex and advanced chronic diseases.

Torrox finalises details for this years Oktoberfest

The distribution of 10 million euros has been done proportionally according to the number of inhabitants of each of the 103 municipalities and smaller municipalities will receive more if they have under 25,000 inhabitants. The Councilor for Enterprise and Employment in Vélez-Málaga, María José Roberto, attended the meeting for the sale of the golf course, which will prevent its closure. Baviera Golf, located next to La Caleta de Vélez-Málaga, will now not close its doors, something that had caused much concern in the Town Hall and from where they had actively supported the search for solutions to avoid it since news of it's troubled financial situation broke. The golf course has been acquired by the company Chakar International Investiments, SL. This has offered the recovery of many jobs related to the infrastructure of the club and avoided the closure of a space blessed with excellent facilities, which brings so many benefits to tourism and the local economy and is visited every year by a multitude of professional and amateur golfers from around the world. Baviera Golf was in serious trouble, due to its parent company suffering financial difficulties and owing money to creditors. Thanks to the effort and support of different agents involved, and also the collaboration of the City Council, the facility is reborn with a new owner and can continue its activities. Golf in Spain is a sport that has many followers, and thanks to the climate in this area it is even more popular. This, coupled with the high quality facilities available in the region, and especially Malaga, combine to create one of the favourite places for the practice of this sport. The golf sector has a major impact on tourism, contributing about 12% to the regional GDP; and that has a very positive impact on the economy of Vélez-Málaga and its surrounding areas.

Provincial Government transfers more than 2 million Euros of funds to the Axarquia The province of Malaga already has 13 million euros of the +16 million economic aid plan that the provincial government launched for this year. 26 THE MARKET PLACE

In addition, another 3 million has been distributed to those locations that suffered damage caused by the heavy rains in October 2018. There are 30 municipalities that have been identified as having been affected.

Andalucia finalises plan to revolutionize care for patients with chronic diseases

The Ministry of Health have finalised the details of a plan that will revolutionise the assistance to patients with chronic diseases. The health advisor, Jesus Aguirre, has talked about the plan during a recent radio interview. In Aguirre's opinion, the patient profile has changed in recent decades and the Ministry have been working on giving a more appropriate response to the patients that consume 80% of the resources of the health system. It is about changing the mentality of care, which is currently focused on acute patients. The purpose of the plan is to make sure people stay as long as possible in good health, promoting self care, managing health care effectively, so that situations of greater complexity can be taken care of at home in the best conditions without causing a deterioration in the health of the people who care for them. The approach for chronic patients is indentification of chronic diseases according to complexity, regardless of age to establish appropriate interventions and resources. One of the pillars of the project is the promotion of health via self care and the participation of people and their families in the effective management of health. Another objective is the implementation of a new model of home care, including residential care, that improves the quality of care and safety of patients

The Mayor of Torrox, Oscar Medina, along with Councillor for Commerce, Sandra Extremera and the organiser of the activity, Jose Manuel Macias, presented the details for Oktoberfest 2019. It will take place at Avda Esperanto (Torrox Costa) and this years festivities will take place between the 19th to the 22nd September. It is an event of great popularity that is celebrated in different parts of the world with a lot of beer! The one in Torrox has become one of the largest in Southern Europe. Local participation, boosted by an influx of tourists is huge, and continues to increase year after year.

Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

Why have you got so much belly fat and what can you do about it? You mightn’t be aware, but belly fat is actually much more dangerous to your health than the excess fat you might be carrying around your bottom or thighs. That’s because the fat around your midsection equates to a higher proportion of visceral fat, which is fat that accumulates around your organs and increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Here’s some common reasons that people can’t shift belly fat – and what to do about it.

1. Too much ‘junk’ Did you know that about a third of the average adult’s energy intake comes from discretionary items? That’s things like muffins, biscuits and ice cream, you'll already know these foods aren’t the healthiest ones to eat every day.

2. Too much fat Nuts, olive oil, avocado – they’re all super-duper healthy foods that have a lot of good things going for them. But while they’re really good for you, they also pack a heap of calories, so it pays to be portion wise.

3. Not enough protein at each meal Aside from its role in muscle maintenance and growth, protein has a fullness factor. So if your meals lack a source of protein, you’ll probably get hungry pretty quickly – and if you’re not prepared, you’re likely to

reach for energy-dense foods like lollies or chocolate for that energy hit.

4. Not enough veggies You hear dieticians bang on about vegetables and that is because they are full of good stuff and low in calories so by eating more you are reducing the energy density of your diet.

5. Drinking your calories Did you know alcohol packs a serious punch when it comes to energy content? You can expect at least 100 calories a pop when it comes to wine by the glass, and even more if cocktails are your thing. But it’s not just about alcohol – juice, soft drink, energy drinks and smoothies are full of kilojoules and usually packed with added sugar, so it pays to make the switch to water.

Doing this one thing can combat aeroplane germs If you want to steer clear of the germs on holiday, put away the hand sanitiser and get some decent shut eye. After comparing the activity of bug-fighting cells in good and poor sleepers, a team of German scientists discovered that a decent night’s snooze can improve your immune function. In fact, sleep can make your cells more efficient at attacking invading germs — which is a good thing as there’s plenty of them on board a plane. You’re 100 times more likely to catch a cold when you catch a flight to your holiday destination, Get your brain fizzing with energy. as surfaces like food trays, American researchers coined the term arm rests and air vents ‘neurobics’ for tasks which activate the brain's own biochemical pathways and are often covered in to bring new pathways online that can bacteria.

A special mention regarding the posthumous tribute to Soledad Platero Sánchez (1995-2019) in Location Nº14, where, along with her posthumous work, is the initiative UN NARCISO PARA SOLEDAD, a charitable proposal to raise funds for research against cancer, in

general and sarcoma, in particular. "Soledad's favourite flower was Narciso. She loved the beauty of the ephemeral of its flower, and the simple fact of seeing them bloom in spring made her happy. “During her recovery period of chemotherapy, we planted three large daffodil pots. On February 20th, on returning from the funeral, just a single daffodil was born from among all the pots." (The family said) A DAFFODIL FOR SOLEDAD is an initiative for the Art Route Frigiliana 2019. We would love that all those who want to take part, send us a daffofil in any creative format by traditional mail or hand delivered to ESTUDIO-GALERÍA AMARTE, C / HERNANDO EL DARRA 6, 29788 FRIGILIANA, before October the 3rd 2019. The benefits obtained from this activity and exhibition will be donated to: • AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer) • Other Associations or Foundations that support research. (CRIS Foundation etc.) • and direct donations to research groups on sarcoma. Also, so that Soledad always has daffodils, share yours by tagging @ unnarcisoparasoledad or using #unnarcisoparasoledad. You can also send them via email to unnarcisoparasoledad@ gmail.com And like every year, so that you can discover the treasures that each exhibition holds, we will put at your disposal the information brochures with a map, where you will find the 34 locations and an example of the work of each artist. This year we will also have an information kiosk where you can collect the brochures, ask your questions and participate in the photocall. As always, we want you to enjoy the walk and the art in an environment full of charm, beauty and creativity.

Considering a hybrid car?

Hybrid cars are a bridge between a fossil fuel car and the new era of electrification in cars. Hybrids are partially electrified but still use an internal combustion engine (ICE). So the car will have a diesel or petrol engine to fall back on if the electricity supply is reduced or dwindling. Sounds perfect right? Yes, they are the future right now being cleaner than a standard car and they have more range and peace of mind than a fully electric car.

Three Types of Hybrid Car

Plug in Hybrid (PHEV) Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle or PHEV does exactly what is says, you plug in at home or at a charging point whilst on a long journey (just like a fully electric car). You can then start every journey with a full battery, maximising the chance of driving around on silent zero emissions mode. Examples of PHEV's are the VW Golf GTE or the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Japanese manufacturers have been leading the way in hybrid car production and have been doing so for the last two decades. It has taken that amount of time though and lots of investment for people to come around to the idea!

Phev's have bigger battery capacities to enable around 4050km a day. However, it is important to remember to keep charging them every night or otherwise you have to carry the weight of the batteries with no benefits to you. The result could be higher bills and a fuel unefficient car!

Full Hybrid Car (HEV's)

REX Hybrid

A full hybrid car can drive under its own electric power, petrol or a combination of the two. Sometimes they are called parallel hybrids. Examples are the Toyota Prius, BMW 330e or the new kid on the block the Toyota CHR, which we will discuss below.

Mild Hybrid Car This is one which cannot drive under electric power alone; the electric part of the power is used as assitance only and is a way to cut emissions. The Suzuki Swift Boosterjet SHVS is an example, or the Honda CRZ. They cannot run on electric alone and the wheels are not turned by an e-motor but its drivetrain uses electric powered fuel saving technology to reduce consumption. 42 THE MARKET PLACE

This stands for range extender electric vehicle meaning the engine on board is only used as a generator to charge the battery of the electric vehicle, and not to drive the wheels. The BMW i3 REX (pictured right) is an example. In these cars the petrol engine just generates electricity and nothing else. So no revving the engine which means less fuel consumption. You have all the benefits of an electric vehicle and practicality of a petrol engine too. These cars at the moment are expensive but more and more manufacturers are starting to release models, so watch out for prices coming down in the near future.

Toyota CHR Hybrid? This car (pictured above) seems to be setting the trend in

hybrid cars, particulary here in Spain. Toyota have had lots of experience and expertise in the form of the Prius, which at one stage cornered the market. The CHR is a full hybrid engine that runs on X a mix of petrol MARKETPLACE_AA_JUNE_93.5mm 135mm and electric. It has a bold space-agey design that will get you noticed around town! The main reason for buying this car would be for its excellent fuel economy. The car will utilise electric power generated while driving to reduce the dependence on fuels that generate bad emissions. You can expect fuel economy of around 74 mpg.

Toyota have engineered it to run as often as possible on electric power in order to save fuel and reduce exhast emissions. To maximise the electric part of the car you should brake gently, accelerate smoothly and keep the power level on 'ECO' on the display panel.

Best in Nerja are Expatriate Students

(With reference to last month's cover photo) "Raul Garcia Herrera should submit the photograph to the 'Rear of the year awards' in England.

In June 2019 the three best students at the Nerja High School I.E.S. Sierra Almijara were FEMALE and EXPATRIATES: Isabelle Towell from the U.K., Andrea Chazarreta from Argentina, and Qi Lin Chen from China. The reasons are obvious: there is a long history of academic achievement in an institution which is over 50 years old. The Spanish state run system of education is second to none and these migrant students who have the complete support of their hard-working families can achieve their goals. Long gone are the days when the first expat students in the 1980´s could not achieve academic excellence because they felt sick for their homelands or had to cope with the culture shock of adapting to the Spanish way of life. Nowadays these ex-pats are simply the BEST! J.M.C.C.

It would be a shoo in. Couldn't fail to win."

Manish's Zodiac predictions - September Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

It’s a time when inspiration comes suddenly, and you could pick up new, and possibly radically different interests or goals. Unexpected meetings, disruptions, or changes that point you in a new direction can occur now. Love requires emotional space and acceptance, and some of you could find love through or with friends and groups. This is a time for feeling personally hopeful, emotionally satisfied and socially popular. Career opportunities come knocking at your door this month and you are looked upon more favourably from those in higher positions. You are also coming across as an authority, and being your own boss is something some of you are leaning towards. Relationships begun now are: emotionally charged, domestic, potentially longlasting, somewhat private–they run deep. A very easy going and easy energy is with you now.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

You are looking to the future, not to the past, and the desire to leap forward into new and unexplored territory is powerful. Career goals, professional interests, or social standing could be catalysts for this process. Sharing long-term goals, hopes, dreams and wishes; treating your partner as a friend as well as a lover; showing tolerance and acceptance would help in making bonds become more powerful.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You could feel as if you are moving out of the dark and into the light, and you’re likely to find the spirit and motivation to embark on unusual or simply different adventures. There are some wonderful and perhaps surprising opportunities that have to do with, travel, or education this month. You are radiating energy that makes you more attractive, and, as a result, opportunities are that much stronger for romantic attention.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

Your powers of attraction skyrocket, and outstanding creative opportunities arise. You could be the go-to person for information and know-how. A pleasant, affectionate, relaxed, or courteous attitude eases your interactions now, and may open doors or help lighten troubled situations that you’ve been working with lately.New interests and possibly love opportunities can be part of the picture in the last week of the month.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

This is a time when you invest in yourself and in the people around you that you respect. Benefits may not be immediate, but they will surely arrive down the road. You are especially companionable and open to new experiences, although perhaps starry-eyed at times. A romance begun now might be characterized by sensitivity, concern, and care on the positive side, but it could also be a moody, clinging one. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

Your energy levels run high and your pioneering instincts are strong. This is a fabulous period for charm and attractiveness. You are having some big plans for the future and are devoted completely to them. People in sports, media and performing arts will be benefited. Relationships begun now are: ego-gratifying, dramatic, dynamic. Because you are open to love and friendly gestures, you will attract loving people into your experience. This month is strong for networking, friendships, and new approaches in your career. You’re inclined to use charm, gentle coaxing, and loving persuasion rather than more direct, forceful methods to get what you want. You will benefit from working on clearing up any problems that have cropped up with friends and lovers. Friendships and love might be renewed or revitalized. The relationship is likely to be sentimental, and perhaps somewhat insular.

Sagittarius ( 22 November – 21 December ) You would be open to new ideas and stimulation, but experiment wisely and creatively. Don’t allow someone else to steamroll over your personal plans. A neglected matter from the past can re-emerge, or there can be a strong temptation to impulsively act on a secret desire. Sharing and comparing your spiritual, religious, or philosophical interests with a loved one may open up a whole new dimension of your relationship.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

Surprises are in store, and they’re pointing you in new directions. There could also be surprising turns of events surrounding creative projects, romance, friends, and children at this time. Invitations to go out and have some fun should be grabbed, but try to keep one foot on the ground, particularly when it comes to money. Small risks, however, could very well pay off. You would show a stronger desire to define your relationships.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You are beginning a period best used for emotional renewal, tying up loose ends, and laying low. Your mood and attitude is conciliatory, and your need for love and approval heightened. You gain what you want through diplomacy or charm and by enlisting the support of your friends, rather than by being forthright and bold. You are willing to make concessions in order to maintain harmony in your environment.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is a time for incorporating imaginative, creative, and alternative methods into what you do. A humble approach does wonders for your professional life and reputation. This is not a time to push yourself or to be involved in activities that require intense competition or a great expenditure of energy. Cooperative, harmonious personal and professional relationships are more important to you at this time.

TAIL Torrox Earlier this summer we received a request to trace a dog that had passed through our hands. This came from the lady who had adopted the puppy in England. On deciding to have a dog to complete her family – good on her – she had chosen to take in a rescue dog – even better on her – and had by elimination chosen a charity called Chimney Farms, who are one of Tail's group of associated charities across Europe. She had chosen her puppy and was looking to find our about her history. This started us thinking about the numbers of dogs that Tail manages to rehome. When this is directly from our own refuge then we do have a complete history for we undertake a home check and also require a detailed contract completing prior to the change of name to the new owner.

principals of which have all visited us in Torrox, some multiple times, and this has enabled us at Tail to have complete confidence in the manner those charities undertake their homechecks etc. We are on the same page. Tail dogs can be found in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Ireland and Great Britian.

Tail mostly rehomes through a group of likeminded charities throughout the continent, the

Benji

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION Benji, Betty and Hector could be mistaken for siblings but Benji and Betty are from a litter of pups which was dumped with CAS in March 2018, whereas Hector was brought to the charity about six months earlier. All three dogs are medium size that come below knee height and weigh between 16-20 kilos. These lovely dogs are happy and playful and usually get along well with other dogs but would not be good with cats. Marilyn is a lovely German Sheppard cross who is about two years old who was found lost in between Torrox and Competa. She has a very sweet personality and gets along well with everyone including cats and children. Marilyn is medium-sized female who is about knee height and weighs about 20 kilos.

a large dog when full grown. But he will be a gentle giant really as he has a sweet disposition and gets along with everyone. Gringo and Georgio are two brothers who were brought to the Costa Animal Society (CAS) earlier this year from another charity as part of a cooperative effort and they were subsequently shared on social media and with other organisations throughout Europe. The networking proved successful as Gringo was rehomed by a group in Holland and he is being prepped for his flight to his new family in the beginning of September. His story was posted on social media and an older gentleman who had recently lost his cat contacted us. When he heard Alba’s story, he constructed a large cage and attached it to his house across a window so that Alba could be outside or come in but still not go missing. He then came and collected Alba and the two of them hit it off straightway. From the very first, Alba made himself at home and is now happy in his new life. was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Competa is famous for its sweet muscatel wine, which is available in most bars, but highly potent, so drink with care!

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
