New office for Mäklarringen
One of Sweden’s leading real estate agents, Mäklarringen, opens a brand-new office with a prime location in Nerja. A secret A grand opening with many surprises will be announced after the summer. We can´t give away details at the moment but there will be exciting news and happenings for everyone in Nerja. Moving from the old office, which was the first office that founders Johanna Lindgren and Thomas Malm opened on the Costa del Sol, followed by La Cala de Mijas and Estepona, will give Mäklarringen a better platform to work from. “With our new office we can meet our clients demands in a better way and also gives us a possibility to expand our business in the pace we want .” says Thomas Malm. Mäklarringen, founded in 1981, has around 70 offices in Sweden and every year thousands of Swedes trust our 200+ agents with selling their home and usually biggest asset. We are also active in Spain, Albania, France, Turkey, Cape Verde and Cyprus. In Spain besides the Costa del Sol, Mäklarringen is present in Alicante, Mallorca, Costa Blanca, Valencia and The Canaries. Mäklarringen is owned by its partners and therefore totally independent for full objectivity in any operation. We represent private vendors and acquirers, national and international developers and investors as well as banks on the Costa del Sol. With over 20 years of experience in the real estate industry and a strong presence throughout the Costa del Sol, our customers meet trusted employees who are passionate about understanding their needs and solving them. Thanks to our quality assurance and our presence on the entire coast, we have been selected as the exclusive sales partner for some of the Costa del Sol's finest new developments, one of them Bayview Hills, situated just a few minutes from the new office (see our advert on the back cover).
The new office is located at: Plaza de la Ermita 15, bajo, 29780 Nerja. Tlf: 952 523 236 · costadelsol@maklarringen.se · www.maklarringen.se 8 THE MARKET PLACE

Drinks to enjoy in Spain this summer
Here comes the really hot weather and there is nothing better in this climate than to enjoy a cool, refreshing drink. The Spanish culture has a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks that are typically Latin and if you are not aware of what to order when you go out and about, check out these refreshing drinks so that you are fully enlightened....
Sangria The classic Spanish pitcher drink that everyone loves in the summer months, great if you go out with a few people to share sat at a local chiringuito while watching the sun go down. There are a number of different versions of sangria, depending on taste but they usually combine wine, fizzy pop and cut up fruit, some even add a dash of something a little stronger, so watch out for that and don't consume too much!
Tinto de Verano Similar to Sangria but a much simpler drink to prepare and with only two ingredients, you can have a glass in your hand before you can say "happy hour". Combine red wine and fanta lemon in a glass with ice and your ready to go. If you prefer it less sweet try adding "Casera" instead of pop.
Try Sherry If you love a red wine, brandy or port you will love sherry. Despite what many people think the majority of sherry from Andalucia is dry, you can try fino or manzanilla which is aged under a layer of yeast or the oxidatively aged oloroso. Sweet sherry tends to be blended and sweetened with sweet wine or can be made from the local moscatel grapes. It is a drink that dates back to the 4th century BC. It partners really well with different types of dessert.
Horchata A lovely non-alcoholic choice for the summer, Spanish horchata is a smooth creamy type drink that looks like a milkshake but is actually made from tiger nuts, sugar and water. You can make a healthier version by substituting the refined sugar for dates. You can buy it at the supermarket but homemade is always best as you know what you are putting in there!
Cuba Libre The classic Cuba Libre uses rum and coca cola but you can jazz it up a bit by using Licor 43. This Spanish liqueur uses 43 ingredients for a 10 THE MARKET PLACE
zesty herbal flavour. Garnish with a lemon or orange slice to give it the ultimate finesse.
Muddle up a Mojito Use up all the fresh mint from your garden in one of the classic cocktails and very apt for the summertime. Just combine white rum, fresh lime juice, fresh mint and a little sugar and then top it all off with club soda for a refreshing drink. You can consider adding fruit for even more fun.
Gin & Tonic The hip and trendy drink of the last few years, especially with all the flavoured gins hitting the market. The Spanish love a good gin and tonic, or rather "gintonic" if you want to emulate them. Try the strawberry gin or even something exotic like the new mango gin. Or just stick with a traditional Larios and pair it with a flavoured tonic to give it a little edge.
Pineapple Tepache Tepache de Pina is made from fresh pineapple peel and core plus brown sugar and tastes wonderful and refreshing at anytime but especially in summer. This is a perfect drink for those that hate waste and love pineapples as it uses the whole fruit. You must plan ahead a little to make this drink. It takes 2-3 days to make. Find your recipe online.
Daiquiri The Cuban Daiquiri is an absolute classic and one not to be sidelined at all the summer parties and bars this season. If you are making them at your own summer party get the best rum you can afford and watch out because they pack a real punch. Check out the fruit versions such as summer fruits, passion fruit or the Hemingway Daiquiri - find out how he liked it best !
Caipirinha The national drink of Brazil but one that the Spanish have adopted with ease! This drink uses Cachaca a Brazilian take on Rum, made with distilled fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses. A lot of different versions exist, but start with the classic which uses the spirit a little sugar and lime. This is a strong one, so you might need to add a little club soda if you like your cocktails a little more moderate.

What should I do in the case of a car accident? Summer is coming in beautiful, sunny Spain. With temperatures soaring it’s a great feeling, although a tad hot at times for all expats that live and work in this tranquilo environment; tranquilo, that is, until the influx of tourists from many countries around the world, especially from Britain and the rest of Europe. Now, more than other times during the year, one needs to be even more careful than ever on the roads. With all these extra cars and drivers, who are perhaps more used to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable.
policies not only for car, but also life, home, business, commercial, funeral, etc., and advise you on the best cover to suit you and your family, in your own language.
Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month. Also check your car’s radiator level is topped up; the last thing you want is to overheat and have to wait for a breakdown truck on the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back is not permitted either. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round, and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile phones are a definite no, INCLUDING texting, which is probably worse than speaking.

Remember it has to be signed by both drivers and reported within seven days; If you need road assistance, call immediately to 900 101 369, Liberty Freephone Number, where you will be attended in your own language. First Driving Impressions – Volvo S60 UK Press Event, Scotland Up to Edinburgh airport, where the S60’s were lined up and ready to go.
We did not have a choice of which model or engine we wanted to drive, as there is only one model and one engine at launch, so we jumped in a R-Design Edition fitted with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. The S60 is all new and is built on Volvo’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform which also underpins the S90, V60, V90, XC60 and XC90.
T
his new saloon is going into battle with its main competitors the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes Benz C-Class, to name just three. All of these cars are good looking and very desirable and have really had the market to themselves for many years, but Volvo really do have a chance of being up there with this handsome new offering.
unsculptured panels. That was their appeal back then – oh, how things have changed with Swedish design.
We set off from Edinburgh and headed North towards Fort William, through some spectacular countryside with roads that seemed to be attracting cyclists and European motorhomes and caravans in similar numbers. But we were in no rush, so we sat back in the luxurious seats and enjoyed the car and the surroundings.
that is the same for all cars in this sector. The boot looked large, and it is large, with a total of 442-litres capacity.
The interior is plain and minimalistic, but it works. It's very Swedish, nothing too fancy, but it all looks good. The quality of material used is up to a very high standard. The dash is slightly odd and we did talk about it while driving. It does appear to have a sharp leading edge to it – no flat dash, and on first inspection it does look as though it could be slightly This saloon from Volvo will not be available with a diesel engine - not now, not ever. It is fitted with a 1,969cc petrol dangerous for the front seat passenger in the event of a front engine that produces 250hp, goes from 0-62 mph in 6.5 end collision. To say the weather was changeable is an understatement, but the car remained the same all day long. There were no surprises, it did exactly what we expected. It was consistently good, whereas the Scottish weather wasn’t. If you think this Volvo is Swedish, just because it has Swedish flags on the front seats, forget it. It may have been designed in Scandinavia, but the fact is that it is assembled at Volvos’ brand-new plant in Charleston, South Carolina. This factory adds the United States to Sweden and China where Volvo’s are also built. This state-of-the-art installation (according to Volvo) will also build the next generation XC90 alongside the S60 in the next couple of years. The lines of the S60 are bold and striking and bring Volvo’s hallmark clean Scandinavian lines with eye-catching details, a feature relatively new to the company and a far cry from the Volvo of yesteryear, when they were dull and had flat, 16 THE MARKET PLACE
Sales are expected to be higher than the outgoing S60, which only sold 960 in 2018, so this new one is bound to sell in higher numbers. If it doesn’t, then there is no justice. The car is full of goodies, lots of toys, and of course being a Volvo it's full of safety features, including Oncoming Collision Mitigation, Run-off-Road Mitigation and Run-Off road protection. There are also other systems to avoid accidents and protect the occupants in case of a collision. The S60 has four Drive-Mode settings: Comfort, which is the default setting; ECO, for the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions; Dynamic, for a quicker response and finally Individual, which allows the driver to tailor each element to their liking. After a drive of over five hours on a vast variety of roads in Scotland we achieved 37.5 mpg on average according to the on-board computer, which we thought was pretty good for a car of this size, with a large petrol engine. Prices start from £37,920 OTR for the T5 R-Design Edition.

How to give a Boho
Touch to your home
Cool houses all have that certain something in common and that is boho style. Well, your house can replicate the same atmosphere of freedom and bohemianism that is felt when you experience a summer festival. Here we tell you how to get that boho touch without giving up the tranquility of your home.
Enter a Boho house Surprise everyone as soon as you arrive. Boho style boasts of using natural materials everywhere. You can hang mirrors of wood or bamboo, or make hangers with natural materials. Another great idea is to place a bench at the entrance to be able to sit on arrival, to plonk a bag down or leave your shoes on.

A Cabin
You can give a boho touch to a space by using wood paneling. By doing this, you will give texture and warmth to the space. It's a nice idea to cover the walls that face the outside and have a door or window. This small detail on the wall can turn your house into a cute wooden cabin .
Microcement on the outside Using Plants
The most natural element we can have in our home is a real plant. The effect that they create in any environment is really special, a house can really turn into a home when we add nature in there. In addition to decorating, it brings freshness and life, especially in cold spaces such as the bathrooms or kitchens.
An excellent way to cover and renovate your terraces and porches is microcement. Thanks to its reduced thickness, it can cover any other material without raising the floor too much. Cement is a material that unifies spaces and can create a very interesting rustic-bohemian atmosphere.
Separate spaces with style
Boho style allows mixing many types of fabrics such as; cushions, rugs, bedspreads, etc. But there is a textile element that works especially well if you want to get a bohemian touch: curtains. You can separate spaces in a simple way and at the same time create a separate environment. You can also use screens with hung fabric if you prefer, they also work very well.
Cover the floors
Reinvent your home with rugs. Place one over another or combine different styles, it is a simple way to provide the Boho touch you are looking for. Dare to mix ethnic rugs and kilim rugs, as they fit with many types of furniture and houses. There are many colours and they are so easy to combine.
Seating and getting closer to the ground Good advice to get a boho environment is to try to place furniture and seats as close to the ground as possible. A bed at ground level will remind you of when you were sleeping in a tent in the middle of a field. It is inspiring and relaxing! And why not invest in a hanging wicker chair?

Local News Local News Local News Local News 3 years delay of Nerja water treatment plant Last month marked 3 years since the treatment plant in Nerja should have been in operation. Now, 36 months down the line, the plant remains unfinished and the town continues to have the unwanted honour of remaining the only large municipality on the coast that continues to discharge waste water into the sea. The setbacks are mainly due to the bankruptcy of the company running things in the summer of 2017. Work was resumed at the beginning of last year and in recent months electrical connections have been made to the pumping stations and treatment plant. However completion is still waiting for the execution of a complimentary project, to incorporate 8 of the 11 discharge points not initially planned, which will cost more than 2 million euros. The new Mayor, JosĂŠ Alberto Armijo (PP), who has returned to a position he held between 1995 and 2015, has requested a meeting with the Ministry to demand the reactivation of the project.
Electric vehicle incentives Individuals, self employed workers and companies can now apply for grants to buy electric vehicles. This incentive program for efficient and sustainable mobility funded through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving is valid until December 2019 or until the budget finishes, which for our region is 8 million euros. 50% of the allocated budget will be for the substitution of vehicles for alternative energies, such as pure electric, hybrids or fuel cells. For trucks and vans LPG, liquified natural gas and biofuel gasoline are considered. The aid for the purchase of more efficient vehicles ranges from 600 euros up to 15,000 euros for vans, buses and trucks. The procedure to claim will be carried out through those that subscribe to the program, garage points of sale, leasing and renting companies. They are responsible for managing the aid on behalf of their customers and perform all procedures related to it. 24 THE MARKET PLACE
Child drowns in pool in Los Romanes The terrible tragedy happened at the end of June in the small village of Los Romanes, which is a municipality of La Vinuela. A five year old British boy died after falling into he swimming pool of his grandparents' villa and drowned because he did not know how to swim.

A local police officer, Jose Gonzalez was the first to arrive and he immediately called the emergency services and an ambulance was sent and helicoper to the scene.
Summer is here and it will be warmer than normal. There will not be any rain, following the 9th hottest spring recorded of the 21st century. At a recent press conference, the delegate for Aemet (weather forecasters) detailed the most likely scenario for July, August and September 2019.
All efforts to try to revive the child were in vain and the emergency services left the scene. The removal of the childs body took place in the early afternoon. Members of the Psychologists Association of Andalusia attended the house shortly after. 11 children have died of drowning in Spain so far this year, the vast majority of these cases have happened in private pools. To prevent them happening it is vital that adults keep an eye on minors at all times and not rely on flotation items. Or alternatively, there are ways of securing the pool with glass covers or perimeter fences which prevent children from accessing the pool area.
Burriana municipal car parking open for Summer The Councillor for Municipal Services, Gema Garcia has declared that from the end of June and throughout the whole summer the municipal car park at Burriana beach will be open from 10am until 12:00am. The beach at Burriana gets exceptionally busy throughout the tourist season and now with this facility the car parking is largely increased for the summer. Mayor JosĂŠ Alberto Armijo promoted the construcion of this much needed facility which was opened in 2015, and this has generated 240 extra car parking spaces to offer
The delegate explained that temperatures will be higher than usual and that there will be a shortage of rain again in Andalucia. The heatwave will quickly hit the region and stay throughout the summer.

White Sands New Mexico By Jessica Infantino Trumble
White Sands is one of those places that you have to see to believe. A sort of geological alchemy shaped by the constant interplay of wind and water over thousands of years, it’s the largest gypsum dune in the world, spanning 275 square miles.
Visitors can explore a seemingly endless sea of sparking white sand that is completely pure and fine (like the sand in an hourglass) and not dusty or gritty like regular sand. And what makes it even more interesting is that the sand is not actually white, rather it began as clear crystals that became smaller and scratched as a result of weathering over time. It truly is like no other place on Earth. Located in southern New Mexico near Alamogordo (3.5 hours south of Albuquerque and 1.5 hours north of El Paso), White Sands was first established as a National Monument in 1933. Today you’ll find 5 established trails that vary in length and difficulty with options for all ages and abilities (we tend to take a more adventurous approach but even my toddler was able to keep up and had the best time). There’s also a ton of other parking and picnic areas that you can explore from along Dunes Drive, which extends from the entrance to the heart of the dunes. The best time to visit is the spring or the autumn as temperatures can reach extremes during the hot summer months and the White Sands website is a great place to find maps, a calendar of activities and other basic information like safety tips and what to bring. The Visitor Centre is also excellent, including the gift shop where you can purchase plastic saucers for sledging on the dunes. 26 THE MARKET PLACE
We went to White Sands for a weekend a few months ago and our experience was nothing short of incredible. The first night we drove about 15 minutes down Dunes Drive and parked our car in one of the roadside car parks. From here we walked across a couple of dunes before finding a spot where we could enjoy our picnic dinner and a striking sunset that washed over the dunes with its pink hue. The next day we ventured further out to the Alkali Flat Trail (which is not at all flat) and into an otherworldly landscape that was relatively untouched. Here are just a few photos from our trip to White Sands, which don’t do justice to how surreal this place actually is. Yes, it’s pure magic. continued on page 28

Also good to know We stayed in Alamogordo at the Fairfield Inn & Suites on Panorama Boulevard about 15 minutes from the White Sands Visitor Centre, which was recently remodeled and offered free breakfast in the morning so we were able to get up and out quickly. In terms of other places to eat, we didn’t dine in town but did pick up amazing sandwiches to go at the Brown Bag Deli on Washington Avenue, which was perfect for a picnic dinner on the dunes. There are also a handful of grocery stores nearby to pick up other snacks and beverages. On the way out of town we treated ourselves to Caliche’s Frozen Custard on North White Sands Boulevard, which came highly recommended but without warning of
the gigantic proportions of the “regular” size sundaes. Another great place to stop just outside of Alamogordo is McGinn’s PistachioLand, home of the “World’s Largest Pistachio”. You’ll find a great old fashioned country store with
tons of local products (the prickly pear chocolate bar was delicious), as well as farm tours, free pistachio and wine tastings and an adjoining ice cream parlour.

How to speak to your dog: Learning practical canine behaviour can benefit your relationship If you were approached by someone speaking in another language you would find it impossible to understand them and hence have a successful conversation! What if they used a little body language, that could bypass for a conversation of sorts?
C
ommunication is clearer when people use the same language and don't rely just on body language and hand signals. The more languages we understand, the easier it is to connect with others. Some languages are difficult to master, but DOG language is NOT one of them. When people understand canine body language and we follow canine social rules, we communicate better with our dogs. We can also prevent common behavioural issues such as stranger reaction, aggression, guarding and types of barking. Canine body language is a lot about how our dogs interpret our movements, energy, posture and positions. or stand side by side, the psychology is a lot like a football team or a family. If a muzzle is needed, we make the experience into a pleasureable game. We use our palmed muzzle as a vessel to feed small biscuit pieces until the dog readily sticks his nose in it to get treats. We rub some cheese on the nose end and sitting or standing next to the dog, we let him lick it off before we slip the muzzle over his nose and take it off with a soft "good boy" and a big smile. We repeat this process. This game is repeated until the dog accepts the muzzle in a calm manner, at which point we snap it behind his ears, give him a little rub/massage, take it off and put it on again. Here we are creating trust and good associations through repetition, so he feels comfortable with the situation in the future. What is commonly called "socialization" gets dogs used to the way humans do things, such as the way we look directly at others, reach towards them and approach their personal space with a lot of conversation. But DOG will always be his first language and he prefers allowing time for a good sniff, nose first and non verbal and indirect communication. Keep in mind that all of the above are just suggestions and may not apply to all situations or in the case of extremely aggressive dogs.

Is it okay to take the pill without a break? If you’re on the pill you probably know a fair bit about it. You probably know, for instance, that you need to take your pill around the same time each day. You’re also likely to know that it can help reduce period pain and hormonal acne. But did you also know that you can skip the sugar pills each month and take the pill continuously?
Please explain... You see, “the pill" is made up of two types of pills - active ones and inactive ones. There are 21 active pills in the pack. These are the ones in the pack that contain the hormones you need to make the pill effective. Then, there are 7 inactive pills (or sugar pills as they’re also known). They’re just there to help you stay in the routine of taking a pill each day while you have your ‘period’ But you don’t actually need to take those inactive pills. That means, if you don’t want to have your period, you can skip the inactive pills and instead move straight on to the next pill pack. If you’re worried about doing that, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s a common concern. But the truth is, you can take the pill, pack after pack, continuously. When you do that, you get to skip your period (woohoo!). That’s particularly good news if you usually suffer from endometriosis, or heavy or painful periods. After all, not having a period equals no pain or heavy bleeding! If you don’t get pregnant, that lining then sheds, in the form of your period when you're not on the pill. But when you’re on the pill, your hormone levels stay the same and that lining doesn’t build up. That bleeding you get during those inactive pills is actually a withdrawal bleed, meaning it happens in response to the hormones being taken away.
Are there any downsides? While it’s not bad for your body to take the pill without a break, you may experience some spotting (a small amount of bleeding) at first. This can be annoying or inconvenient. Mind you, this usually settles down with time.
Is there anything else I need to know? While you hopefully now know that it’s really okay to take the pill continuously, you should also keep in mind that the pill doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections. So you still need to use another form of contraception, such as condoms, if you wish to gain protection from them. Another thing you should know is that skipping pills, using some medication (like certain antibiotics) and being sick with illnesses like gastro, can all interfere with absorption of the pill, making it less effective.
Science says doing this while sleeping is causing you weight gain! Let's face it, the majority of us are guilty of taking our phones into bed with us. We know we shouldn't be doing it, but now science has given us a reason why it's a really bad idea to keep your phone next to your bed. A new study has found a link between exposure to sleeping with artificial light and weight gain in women. The research was based on data from 43,722 women in the Sister Study. The participants, aged 35-74 years, answered questions on whether they slept with no light, a small nightlight, light outside of the room, or a light or television on in the room. Using information including weight, height, BMI and waist and hip circumference at the start of the study and follow-up numbers five years later, the scientists studied obesity and weight gain in women exposed to artificial light at night versus women who slept in dark rooms. Artificial light has been known to disrupt melatonin, the sleep hormone, as well as the body's natural circadian rhythm. A small nightlight wasn't linked to weight gain but those who slept with a television or light on were 17 per cent more likely to have put on 5kg or more in just five years. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

This venue is a natural quarry which is in the shape of an ampitheatre and has extraordinary acoustics and one of Europe's largest open air cinema screens. Los Alamos Beach Festival - Estepona 31st July to 4th August www.losalamosbeach. com This festival is an electronic music festival that was originally held in Torremolinos and hosted 50,000 people. Artists such as Armin Van Buuren, Firebeatz and Social Security performed at the last events. This year the venue has changed to the Feria ground in Estepona due to the original location being too near to a residential area in Torremolinos. There is a camping area allocated for festival goers which is 2 kilometres from the feria ground. There are the usual festival facilities on offer there. This year Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, Danny Avila and Salvatore Ganacci, Camelphat, Fatima Hajji and loads more will feature.
The Feria of Malaga - 15th to 24th August This is simply the largest and most wonderful fair on the Costa del Sol. This year it lasts for a whole ten days where young, old and different nationalities come together to let their hair down and enjoy a typical Spanish party. Most of these fairs in Andalucia originate from the ancient cattle fairs that used to take place in big cities. Malaga actually has two fairs taking place, one in the city centre and one at the feria ground which has more than 200 stalls and tents. This area is located just off the motorway near the Palacio de Congreso (exhibition centre) and this fair is where people celebrate at night as there are lots of fairground attractions for the whole family to enjoy. The day fair is enjoyed in Calle Larios and the streets surrounding it and in the afternoons you can find lots of flamenco dancers and singers, music, tapas and lots of the popular sweet Malaga wine called Cartojal. Also don't forget the spectacular firework show the Friday before the 1st Saturday of the Feria which is held on La Malagueta beach.

Dreambeach was recently awarded the best electronic music festival in Latin America and also was included in the top 50 festivals of the world by DJ magazine. Dreambeach is located in Villaricos next to the Mediterranean Sea and some of the best beaches in Almeria. Shiatsu and the harmonization of the intestine tract for a healthier life Interview with Marina Scateni, experienced Shiatsu and Bio-Natural Techniques practitioner in Nerja. Market Place: Not too familiar to many people, we are curious to know what Shiatsu is and why is it so beneficial to the overall health? Marina: Shiatsu is an ancient manual therapy coming originally from Japan, finding its fundamentals in Chinese Traditional Medicine. It works with digital pressure on the acupuncture points of 12 meridians, energy lines crossing our body from head to feet, each of them corresponding to an inner organ. So while I work on a line along the body, I support the body to activate and regenerate the organ, letting the energy flow, boosting the circulation, releasing emotions and giving an overall sensation of lightness and wellness. MP: how does this exactly work? M: We normally feel pain where there is a knot, a blockage into the energy flow of our body. It is a bell ringing, a way our body uses to grab our attention on an issue going on. It can be triggered by an emotion, by a wrong food choice or an excess of physical work affecting our body and transformed into a physical pain. Shiatsu works in a holistic way, going to the source of pain to be able to act on various levels and ensure a long lasting healing. MP: is it a healing technique then? M: The individuals body instigates the healing. The practitioner only supports the natural process of self-healing, awakening the body functions. MP: What kind of physical issues can Shiatsu relieve? M: Shiatsu relieves back pain (stiff neck, lower back, sciatica), it unknots muscle tensions, it reduces stress, it is beneficial in cases of constipation, diarrhoea, gut disorders, psychosomatic disorders,
anxiety, insomnia, fatigue and many more. It improves metabolism, mental and physical efficiency and provides relief from important pathologies such as Parkinsons, Fibromyalgia, chronic migraine, it raises the life force, and most of all, it awakens our bodies self-healing capacities. The pioneer of Shiatsu in Japan, Tokujiro Namikoshi said that “Shiatsu is like mother’s love, it stimulates the source of life.
MP: Why is the intestine so important? M: My studies on Shiatsu and Healing Diets, over the years were merging to one unique major point, the importance of a clean intestine for the body to function as it naturally should. Our body is really a perfect machine, as it is said, if we let it work properly and fill it with the good food and support it with the right lifestyle. The intestines health is strictly related to the overall health. That is why lately I associate Shiatsu MP: How long does a session last? with the Adamski Method, an innovative M: Normally the first session takes a bit technique pioneered by a French longer than an hour. An optional and more intense detox program depending on the clients dietary habits and conditions is available.
THE MARKET PLACE 41
MP: What is the basis of correct food combinations? M: It is based on the fact that there are fast and slow foods. That means food with different times of digestion. If you mix them together then you slow the process of digestion, making your body work double, creating fermentation and consequently toxins. The accumulated toxins won’t allow the intestine to work properly. The body wont regenerate as it should and slowly it will be more inclined to get sick. The main objective of the harmonization of the intestine is to cleanse it from toxins and bring the intestine and related organs to perfect functionality, thus to give relief from a variety of health issues. I strongly suggest you to give it a try. MP: How is this program work? M: You can choose a program of 3-4 Shiatsu treatments to boost your immune system, work on many physical issues and have a greater sense of immediate wellbeing or go deeper into a specific intestine cleansing process, the harmonization of intestine and detox program, including Shiatsu treatments with a specific digital pressure technique helping releasing toxins, a food combining diet and a stretching technique to improve circulation. In this case the program will take place over three months for long lasting benefits to your health. MP: where can we receive these treatments? M: I am very grateful that I was welcomed to work as Shiatsu Practitioner in some of the best known holistic and physiotherapy centres in Nerja and
Torrox. And lately I am very happy to have started a new collaboration with the Sole Beauty Centre, where we are proposing a package of 1 month to 3 months Detox & Beauty Program alongside the Shiatsu, the harmonization of intestine technique and the Sole Beauty Centre's innovative treatments for a flat abdomen and a boost of new energy. MP: We know that you are also a certified Yoga Instructor and organize Yoga & Wellness retreats where you offer your knowledge for people to grow awareness and take a regenerative break in a spectacular place to work on themselves. M: Last year, with great pleasure and enthusiasm, we started a new Project of Yoga Wellness retreats in Casa Miranda, a spectacular spot surrounded by the high vibrant Almijara Mountains and the beautiful Costa Tropical. There, I organize, with a great team of professionals, day events, long weekends and full weeks, proposing a package of activities merging holistic techniques and practices for people to grow awareness of their body and mind and work on deep relaxation and connection for a greater sense of wellbeing. We propose: Yoga, Meditation, Taiji and Qigong, holistic treatments, Shiatsu, the harmonization of intestine techniques, wave healing water massage, optional detox programs, hikes in the nearby natural park, vegan organic meals and night topical movies and meditations. A fantastic opportunity to regenerate, rejuvenate, relax and bring home a few tips to improve the overall lifestyle and health.
MP: Your next dates? M: our next event is the long weekend of Water Healing Retreat 4-7th July, all based on the water element as main healer. Proposing a range of holistic treatments and activities focusing on increasing range of motion, back flexibility and strength. (You can also join only the oneday event on Sunday July 7th). On October 14-21st we will host a one week retreat focusing on Wellness & Detox and look out for the dates of a November retreat exclusively for women.

Literary fantastic! Nerjenian, Claudia Sequero, began her studies locally and has always had a love for literature, showing great potential from a young age. For the last few years Claudia has been constantly putting pen to paper and last year finally published her first book. All this at the tender age of fourteen, and her adventure continues. Below is an excerpt from her latest work...
Twelve months
October departed tearless and with a smile’s outline on its foliage, giving way to wary November, which awaited gloomy and cautious the arrival of December’s music, jingling between lutes and storms, unruly and immature, which disregarded the barrier and melted away into the new January, as angry as it was peaceful, somewhat tense and with its acute senses seeking February, calm and short, insecure even of its twenty-ninth day for not listening to reasons and becoming overshadowed by the impulsive March, loaded with renewed strength and the wind’s cries warning of the April rains that flooded May in its embrace, maturing into full bloom, caller of the warm breeze and bright sun rays, powerful and close to June’s jovial attitude, that encourages dreams and faraway travels in an imaginary land until July catches those wishes and makes them come true, flooding all manner of paths and destinations with the starlight guiding the way towards the hopes of the tears gifted to us in August: the Perseids, bathing and renewing the tides’ current with the help of September’s full moon, melancholic and distant, wise and full of experiences; the beginning of a cycle that would leave October stunned.

Playa Cantarriján For the third consecutive year the Junta de Andalucía has once again started it’s transport service to Cantarriján beach. Bathers who want to enjoy the naturist beach can do so up until the beginning of September by parking in the two car parks available at the top of the beach just off the N-340. The transport is carried out by the company "Gonzamatis". During the trip the shuttle buses offers information about the nature of the Maro cliffs and Cerro Gordo. The single round trip price is 2 euros and the shuttles operate between 09:00 and 21:00. The 1,400 metres of road can also be done by foot. The Junta de Andalucía launched this service in 2008 to facilitate the use and public enjoyment of this beach by restricting the amount of vehicles, and protecting the natural diversity of this
area. The increase of visitors to the area is evident annually, in recent years the number of visitors has exceeded 30,000 people. It was declared a conservation area in 1989 by the Junta de Andalucía, sharing its 12 kilometres of coastline between the municipalities of Almuñécar and Nerja, in the provinces of Granada and Málaga. Due to the importance of its maritime biodiversity, Maro and Cerro Gordo were declared by the UN as a Specially Protected Area of ORANGE CORAL Importance to the Mediterranean (ZEPIM) and Special Protection Area for Birds since 2002 (ZEPA), due to the diversity of species that it presents, such as the Peregrine Falcon, the Common Kestrel, Northern Goshawk and the Sparrowhawk. But if the terrestrial flora of this protected area is diverse, even more so are the inhabitants of its seabed. The great richness of the marine grasslands and their biological complexity have meant that the Maro and Cerro Gordo seabeds are included in the list of priority habitats by the EU. In addition, in this natural area are also unique marine fauna composed of a large number of invertebrates such as sponges, corals (especially the population of orange coral, a species classified as vulnerable to extinction), anemones, molluscs, shrimps, spider crabs and lobsters.

Two blue-winged Macaws born in the Loro Sexi ornithological park, Almuñécar. The new Macaws are of the variety "Aliverde" (Ara chloroptera) and have been removed from their nest to be attended to by veterinarians as a defect in the mother's beak prevents her from feeding them normally. "They are kept under a red light lamp as they need a constant temperature of 30-31°C until they are feathered, later they can be kept at around 26-28°C. At the beginning they eat every 2 hours, now they are already on 4 or 5 meals a day. The eyes should open after 14 days. They are not yet fully open and their feathers have also started to show. According to veterinary caretakers, "The macaws shout a lot despite how small they are. There's a water container to get a humidity of 60%. As for the food, they receive porridge that is a special high-energy paste with prebiotics and digestive enzymes. After two months they will not need heat because it will coincide with the summer. Weaning will take place over three and a half months. " The new Loro Sexi Macaws already have their names. The veterinarians have chosen to name the two Macaws "Bwana" and "Memsahib" in Swahili language meaning "Lord" and "Lady". Soon the park will also be joined by various other new births; a dozen Creole Ducks and some Amazonian Parrots too.
Grilled Sardines with Lemon and Thyme This is a dish that is both humble and elegant, full of flavour, with the glistening silver skin of the sardines crisping in the heat. It’s also not fussy in the slightest, which means it could easily serve as the centerpiece of a light weeknight meal, with a large bowl of greens and crusty bread.
INGREDIENTS SERVES 4 PEOPLE • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
INSTRUCTIONS Heat the grill until hot. Move the oven rack as close to the heat source as possible (around 3 inches away). Heat a sturdy pan for about 5 minutes.
• lemon wedges for serving
Wrap a lemon slice around each thyme sprig and stuff inside the sardines; sprinkle with salt and pepper.
• 12 or more fresh thyme sprigs, plus chopped fresh thyme for garnish
When the pan is hot, remove it from the oven and pour in half of the olive oil, then put the sardines in the pan and drizzle with the remaining oil.
• 750g of fresh sardines, gutted heads on • Salt • Black pepper • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 48 THE MARKET PLACE
Grill for 4 to 5 minutes, then check the sardines; they’re ready when they’re opaque, the tip of a knife flakes the thickest part easily, and the outside is nicely browned and a bit crispy.

TAIL Torrox We wrote in a recent issue about shutting the Refuge to any more incomers (sounds a bit like european national borders) because we were severely overfull. Well it was done with the best of intentions believing that it is important to look after and care for our existing charges, rather than being crammed to the rafters with a constantly growing population, but as with a lot of good planning it requires others to play their part. Sadly if your raison d'etre is to rescue abandoned dogs and strays and unwanted puppies whom ignorant people seem to discard at will, planning capacity is a fools game. However we do wish that someone would put forward a plan to equate a growing demand, a
static number of places available with a more or less even number of adoptions. Short of making neutering compulsory, finding the finance to support more refuges or making keeping a pet a nearly prohibitive cost with licences and other restrictions. It will be done through education in the end but just how many dogs – and cats, horses etc – will suffer from cruelty in all it's forms in the Simba who´s owner has recently died and he meantime. is looking for a home.
We are Torrox Animal Internation League (TAIL), a local charity/ refuge set in Torrox. Our goals are to rescue and rehome abandoned and maltreated dogs and work to educate local community about dog care and neutering. With new cases of animal abandonment every week, we need your help to keep on pursuing these goals. Please subscribe to our one euro campaign! The shops are open Mon-Sat 10am-2pm. The shelter is open Tues-Sun 11am-2pm and closed all day Monday. Both accept donations of bric-a-brac, clothing etc and the Costa del Oro shop has furniture too. Tel: (0034) 629501173

La Herradura
nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Nerja
was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

Lake Viñuela
is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana
encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
