TEAMTALK

TURNING PAGES ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Welcome to the island, to the archipelago, and to our 2010 year-end edition of Bali & Beyond magazine. Here we are, arriving at the point where we once again look back through the past year and then look forward to what the next might bring. To most of us at Bali & Beyond, it was a lot of baby talk looking back. Our editorial team members have jokingly been ‘highly productive’ this year. First with the birth of our editor’s first daughter mid-year, and then amidst the print deadline four months later came our junior editor’s third child and second princess. Luckily they didn’t share the same print period, as it wouldn’t have been easy! Then a month later one of our regular contributing photographers announced the birth of his second son, adding to the teams ‘extended family‘ and hinting to the fun idea of forming a cute little band called Bali & Beyond Babies. And while we had the happy news at home, we have also seen the nation grieving. As with other parts of the world, Indonesia was not spared the extreme weather conditions over these past months. On October 4, flash floods suddenly poured down in torrents from the hills, brought by the normally serene river in West Papua, washing away the entire small town of Wasior. Resembling a small tsunami, these torrents brought huge boulders down the mountainside and uprooted tree trunks, resulting in overnight devastation. The river that was normally 8 meters wide had spread out to over 100 meters. Then on the dark and rainy night of October 25, a deadly quake measuring 7.2 on the Richter Scale shook West Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands in the Indian Ocean. A tsunami occurred on this remote island chain; the main island of Sumatra was spared. The Mentawai islands are a favorite spot for surfers, since it has 6

consistently some of the most perfect barrels in the world. On October 26, Mt. Merapi, Indonesia’s most volatile volcano erupted, spewing out hot clouds from its crater, followed by explosions at sunset time sending thousands of evacuees fleeing down the mountain for safety. Raining thick ash on houses and fields in regions to its southwest, it was blown by winds as far away as the town of Kebumen.

Donny Cahyadi is no stranger in our office. He continuously feeds us with fresh photos by the day. (Congrats on birth of second son, Don!)

A number of international airlines suspended flights to Solo and Yogya, while Garuda continued to fly although with some delays, flying passengers instead to the airport in Solo, an hour’s drive from Yogya. The recent eruption of Mt. Merapi has damaged the tourism industry at the Kaliurang resort near Yogyakarta, which lies within the Danger Zone. With the temporary closure of Borobudur, hotels around the Park have also lost revenue with large drops in the number of guests.

Fadil Aziz is a travel photographer whose main passion is capturing the archipelago’s beauty. View his portfolio at www.alcibbumphotography.com

Life in Yogyakarta however, has continued to move at a normal pace despite obvious inconveniences but hotels and restaurants remaining open. With Mt. Merapi stabilizing, Yogyakarta’s airport was expected to be reopened as this goes to press. We all hope, pray and work for a better Indonesia at the turn of the year.

Patricia Ivana loves writing, which also finances her travels. She loves the beach and wishes to go to all the beautiful beaches in the world. (Good luck Pat!)

And now we count down to the holiday season - once again. But regardless of the season, we believe there’s always a holiday nuance especially for you on this island, and further beyond into 2011. Enjoy this edition; enjoy your time on the island and beyond! And from all of us here at Bali & Beyond, wishing you a “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” – see you in 2011. ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

CLASH OF THE CURL The epic Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival event and an incredible 2010 Coca-Cola ISC tour season on November 14 climaxed with Marlon Gerber’s first ISC tour win resulting in 18-year old Putra Hermawan’s 2010 Coca Cola ISC Open Division Championship victory. Hermawan was eliminated earlier in the semifinals, but Dedi Santoso’s score of 6.20 was not enough to overtake Gerber, and then the crowd erupted around Hermawan as he was handed the 2010 championship trophy by 2009 ISC Champion Lee Wilson. Gerber also posted the highest single wave score, an 8.5 out of a possible 10 for punting a massive aerial in semifinal 1, resulting in his highest combined heat score of a 16.15 out of 20, and the Coca-Cola Best Wave Award of Rp. 1 million to add to his Rp. 10 million paycheck from Rip Curl. Gerber dedicated his victory to his friend Andy Irons, who passed away tragically on November 2. www.ripcurl.com, www.isctour.com

The name Penyekeban is derived from the word “sekeb” in the Balinese language, which means ‘to heat’ or ‘brew’.

The majority believe that Galungan is the most important day in a single pawukon cycle.

On this day the people who will celebrate Galungan start picking their pre-ripened fruits and ‘incubate’ them in time for their ripening on the day of celebration. This ritual is still preserved for those who have land on which to grow fruit. At the least their land produces bananas which is an omnipresent fruit element within each offering. Another ubiquitous harvest item is sugarcane. Other fruits are somewhat optional, customized according to their availability. Now we often see people who use imported fruits because of the appealing range of colors. Undeniably though not quite important, use of expensive fruits may also raise the prestige of the owner of the offering. But this has been criticized by religious Hindu figures in Bali such as Ida Pedanda Made Gunung. In his discourses he often conveys the importance of using local fruits and harvests that grow primarily in the household yards. It is important to maintain native species, which also contribute to cost savings for ceremonies. And that prestige is not important in an act of devotion or Yadnya. It is supposed to be a form of love for the divine, which should be delivered with wholesome sincerity. On the day of Penyekeban, the Balinese Hindus believe that Sang Kala Tiga, or the three Butha Kalas (negative forces) are at their most potent in affecting humans.

EXTRAORDINARY RETREAT, EXCEPTIONAL AWARD Ranadi Villa broke grounds since its opening in August 2008, as a subtle yet self-defined retreat hidden away in the prime Seminyak area. This subtlety meets high global praise with the recent unprecedented achievement of the World Luxury Hotels Award.

T

he World Luxury Hotel Awards are the world’s most prestigious awards exclusive to the luxury hotel industry and it recognizes the best facilities and service excellence the industry has to offer worldwide. The Awards recognized a selection of the finest hotels situated amongst 54 countries at the recent annual 2010 Gala Dinner in Hua Hin, Thailand in October. Established in 2006, the World Luxury Hotel Awards encourages sustainable competitiveness which bolsters staff moral and creates heightened awareness of certain nonnegotiable criteria within the luxury hotel industry. The criteria to be successfully nominated and included in the official World Luxury Hotel Awards voting process is overall service excellence. Only hotels, lodges and resorts operating in a luxury niche market are able to participate in the World Luxury Hotel Awards. And Ranadi Villa just happened to be one among them. Ranadi Villa achieved Global Winner 2010 status in the Luxury Villa Resort category, with a “Simply Exceptional” byline in its catalogue featuring other fellow Indonesia ‘country winners” from Bali and Batam, together with a collection of select luxury brands from around the globe. Sojourners to Bali will find a warm and refreshing ambiance to indulge in at Ranadi Villa. Every villa compound boasts a private pool and sundecks. On the whole, all villa bedrooms are spacious with en suite bathrooms; with separate semi outdoor living and dining spaces equipped with full kitchen facilities laid out around beautiful tropical gardens. According to Ranadi Villa’s General Manager, Ricky Wirapatria, the villas’ existing components are added with a brush of traditional style. Instead of following the mainstream of offering sojourners with commonplace jargons of ‘contemporary’ and ‘minimalist’, but rather puts itself apart by coming up with a seemingly novel concept throughout its villa units, namely: a through a ‘Tropical Colonial’ design. The Tropical Colonial concept from a design and structural viewpoint emphasizes on colonial features, evident through the extensive use of white and teal. However, as Ricky puts it, it is not purely colonial. It has also blended in a touch of Balinese landscaping. The welcoming and reception area as well as throughout the villas, feature Balinese gardens, and the furnishings feature Javanese furniture and decorative elements. “Materials such as these are quite hard to find… but if you go deep into the rural villages, they’re all there and available,” explained Ricky. “That’s how we founded the Tropical Colonial concept, and incorporated it into the villas. Tropical Colonial design, blended with lush Balinese gardens, and augmented with Javanese fittings”. “For the building structures itself, they are not too antiquated. Not too colonial. Because it would might be rather a bit ‘daunting’ for the guests. That’s why there’s a blend of the other elements. Each complementing the other.” Despite its concept in design, the villas are still at its most modern, with LCD TV offering 60 International channels (even in the bathroom), air conditioning and ceiling fan options, IDD phone and broadband internet access. The living facilities include a semi outdoor living and

dining area, sundeck and loungers, a fully equipped kitchen with Chinaware, glassware and kitchen utensils, a mini bar set up with tea and coffee making facilities – complete preferences for the astute traveler. The retreat has garnered positive comments from guests. And it was its guests that recommended it to the World Luxury Hotel Awards, leading to its nomination. Last year, Ricky received an email the Award’s Director describing the nomination, and asking whether they would accept it. Ricky simply thought, “Why not?”. “We didn’t know about the awards beforehand. But there were many who knew about it and nominated themselves. We weren’t aware of what category we were to achieve, until the actual presentation ceremony held in Thailand.” On the environmental side, Ranadi Villa has applied bio filters to its waste management scheme. It also encourages the use of recycled paper for its daily uses. Notices to conserve water are addressed to its guests. A range of austerity measures for environmental efforts, yet remaining realistic and not to compromise luxury in the process. It also actively participates in environmental campaigns together with the Bali Villa Association, such as tree planting activities. On the menu, Ranadi Villa puts Indonesian food to the fore. Western selections remain available. It promotes that Indonesia is rich in culinary varieties, and the restaurant

menu is carefully chosen to provide a well-balanced variety of authentic Indonesian and International cuisine. All of the food is prepared from the fresh ingredients and cooked to the highest standards and is 100% pork free. Chef Steven invites guests to indulge in the signature dishes and the weekly chef specials. Its attentive ‘family service’ approach has appealed to repeaters, who stay an average of 3-4 days or more, including among them renowned Australian fashion designer, Jayson Brunsdon. Experience an exceptional stay yourself at the awardwinning Ranadi Villa, through its 12 One-Bedroom Villas each at US$350++ per night, 4 Two-Bedroom Villas each at US$525++ per night, and 2 Three-Bedroom Villas each at US$700++ per night. Rates include private return airport transfer, an exotic welcome drink and fragrant chilled towel upon arrival, a complimentary seasonal fruit basket and stocked mini bar upon arrival, complimentary WIFI internet access, and complimentary scheduled transfer to the Kuta area. Ranadi Villa has also received The Best Region Tax-Payer of Badung Regency Year 2009 award in October, as well as a certificate from the national police force, in recognition of its safety and security aspects. RAJA AMPAT:

LAST (HIDDEN) PARADISE? A hidden paradise revealed, with news of it spreading by word of mouth. According to one of the leading environmental NGOs, 75% of all the known coral species are found in its surrounding seas. However, behind the shimmer and despite various efforts from the world community and local authorities, Raja Ampat is still shadowed by potential threats that could destroy not only its position as a favorite destination but more importantly its function as the world’s foremost marine haven of biodiversity.

WATCH OUT The 2010 Watch of the Year Prize of the specialized Swiss watch magazine Montres Passion has been awarded to the Bulgari Octo Bi-Retro, Gérald Genta collection. This prestigious accolade distinguishes a resolutely contemporary and sporty model with an iconic octagonal case. The clever combination of materials – featuring a “studded” ceramic bezel, a crown set with an onyx cabochon and a natural rubber strap – boldly testifies to the fact that this is a rugged model designed to stand up to the trials of daily wear. Paradoxically, the Octo Bi-Retro Steel/Ceramic houses a sophisticated mechanism driving a window-type jumping-hour display, along with retrograde minutes and the date shown by superimposed hands. ON CAMERA Biasa ArtSpace hosts an exhibition of artist collective MES 56, through On Camera. The exhibition, curated by Alia Swastika, opens on December 16 at 6 pm and will run through February 11, 2011. The visual art exhibition On Camera signifies an important phase in MES 56’s passage as part of a discourse on the contemporary arts in Indonesia. In 2004 in Yogyakarta, MES 56 was established during the time when Indonesian photography had a strong tendency to only be explored in the realm of journalism. Their goal: introduce new approaches in the field of photography by positioning it in the field of the arts and at the same time question the role of photography in presenting reality. The exhibition explores ideas about the camera itself, which has always been defined only as an object (tool). Conversely, the exploration of the camera notions a new ideology in photography. In realizing this design, they focus on how the camera became a representation of how to perceive the world; a representation on “how to see” (the way of seeing). HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
