TEAMTALK

ART ON THE ISLAND ‘Om Swastiastu...’

Rich with age-old traditions, Indonesia is like a wonderland for art enthusiasts. From traditional textiles to modern paintings, we have them all, making the archipelago, particularly Bali, one of the best destinations in the world for those who like to explore art. Celebrating the country’s unique arts and crafts, we are determined to bring you closer with the nation’s both classic and contemporary creations.

COVER “MANTRI” (Paramedic) - 2017 by Imam Sucahyo Photo by Jaka Dwi Dharma

Pay a visit to the workshop of Threads of Life in Ubud to learn more about Indonesian heirloom-quality textiles. Flip through our ‘CRAFT & CULTURE’ where we join a fun batik class and discover how Threads of Life works with over 1,000 fabric makers across the country to preserve this heritage. A talk with founder of Cata Odata art house, Ratna Odata, also gives insights about the challenges that local artists often have to face – we feature this interview in ‘PROFILE & PORTRAIT’. Bali is home to numerous talented unexposed local photographers. Aiming to encourage them in creating marvelous photos, the Perhimpunan Fotografer Bali (Bali’s Photographer Community) held the 3rd Bali Photo Awards 2017 photo competition with the theme “Air dalam Budaya” (“Water in Traditions”) – see the amazing work of the winners in our ‘FOTO FOLIO’. Last but not least, our contributor Edna Tarigan discovers contemporary artworks at Art:1 Museum in Jakarta, which she shares in ‘CAPITAL CORNER’. Happy flipping through our pages and enjoy some fun art hunting in Indonesia!

masculine yet sexy at the same time. Two dancers wearing cheongsam danced on the swings with soft and slow gestures, giving the perfect ambiance of exclusive nightlife in old Chinatown in Bangkok, Thailand. As I took a sit at the lounge which is right next to the bar, I began to think of enjoying a glass of fresh energizing drink to soothe my mind. I walked towards the bar to see their choices of beverages before having my dinner. My choice fell on Siam Julep amongst the bar’s super tempting lists of cocktails. I felt quite challenged to try this mix as the bartender explained that the drink has a strong yet fresh sour taste that comes from nutmeg, mint and a mix of Italian aromatic spirit; Fernet Branca, Jim Beam, and a little bit of honey. But one sip of the drink assured me. Siam Julep successfully rejuvenated me in an instant!

STARTER HIGHLIGHTS After half an hour relaxing in the lounge, I decided to start my dinner. The staff led me to a big tall door at the end of the lounge aisle that connected the lounge and bar area to the restaurant. Once the door was opened, I was instantly in awe with the dramatic view of an oriental ďŹ ne dining room. It was a totally different ambiance from the bar and lounge area. BB: What do you love about art?

BB: Do you select artists to collaborate? RO: For now, we are focusing only on artists who reside in East Java and Bali. They come from many art disciplines such as visual art, street art, theatre, installations, dancers, graphic and printmaking. the Indian Ocean, clinging to the edge of sea cliffs, The Spa has been designed to fuse with its oceanic surroundings. Similar to The Edge’s villas, The Spa presents a stunning all-white ultra-contemporary and minimalist-styled space, but here, one vast open-plan chamber with curved, sensuous outer walls naturally follow the cliff’s contours. The Spa provides a couple of wet and dry mini-therapy areas with Vichy Showers and an elevated main treatment deck, bathed in natural sunlight, with a duo of stone massage beds facing wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal spectacular Indian Ocean views. The ocean may be far away, but this quirky deck space, designed with a unique “liquid floor” and permanent ankle-deep water, brings the ocean to you. These, along with custom-made spa products containing all-natural certified organic ingredients, are especially highlighted in four exclusively designed Signature Rituals: Oceanic, Sacred Flower, Divine Fire and Dewi Sri. Each are significantly themed and suit particular needs, and all last two-hours (available at Rp. 2,100,000++) and loosely follow a similar blissful format; they all commence with a foot ritual, continued by core body scrub wrap and wash, and rounded off with a massage therapy administered by experienced internationally-trained Chief Therapist Nyoman. Two endangered species endemic to Indonesia, the yellow headed parrot and Tanimbar Megapode, can also be found here. That’s just the tip of the island’s biological iceberg. In 1986, a national park was established to protect Moyo Island’s nature and habitat. However, conservation was always managed naturally by the locals who have been living on the island for centuries. They are not allowed to hunt or fish in an unordered fashion, yet for some people it’s just a matter of surviving and providing food for their table.

It also exhibits a compressed VW Beetle, courtesy of Jakarta-born artist Ichwan Noor that makes an attractive and eye-catching welcome. Aside from displaying a number of artworks made in Indonesia from various eras, Art:1 also often hosts art-related events. For instance, during my visit, the “Animamix Biennale 2017” exhibition took place on the first and second floor of the museum. The exhibition presented unique contemporary creations by international artists –

The museum admission fee is more expensive than other museums in Jakarta, ranging from Rp. 75,000 to Rp. 150,000. However, I personally think that the price is worth the experience of exploring high quality modern and contemporary artworks in Indonesia. And at the end of my visit, I believe I have a new understanding about art.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
