CLOSER TO NATURE ‘Om Swastiastu...’ The island’s pristine nature is full of surprises. There is always a new area to be explored or a distinctive adventure to experience. Even those who have wandered around the island many times can still find an innocent spot to discover. And this is why Bali is mesmerizing for a lot of us. In this edition, we are going to take you revealing the natural wonders of Munduk, an unexplored area near Bedugul. Perched on a hilly area, Munduk Wilderness is ready to bring everyone on a journey using Indonesian-built Fin Komodo Buggy cars, and unearth a waterfall, a coffee plantation and more. Flip through ‘ACTION & ATTRACTION’ for more details on our adventure. For a perfect

If you need recommendations on where to stay in Bali, read our ‘REST & RELAXATION’ to find out about our remarkable stay experience at Royal Tulip Saranam. Our contributor Tissa Setianingrum Wira also shares what it feels like to spend a night at Skylodge Pajajaran Anyar in West Java, which is claimed to be the world’s highest lodge. To keep your mind, body and soul in balance, have a relaxing “me” time at Arkipela Spa in Mövenpick Resort Jimbaran Bali or Sava Spa in Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach – reveal what each of them have in store for you in ‘INVITE & INDULGE’. We also present stories from outside of Bali that will bring you closer to nature. Paul V. Walters unfolds a splendid experience sailing around Raja Ampat in Papua, while Edna Tarigan encounters two giant pandas in Taman Safari Bogor in West Java. Find their stories in ‘BEYOND BALI’ and ‘CAPITAL CORNER’ respectively. All in all, we wish you happy flipping through our pages. CRAFT&CULTURE

Attending a ritual in a Balinese compound that was close to my home, I found myself entwined in an extraordinary circumstance that was happening only meters away. I gulped down a cup of strong black Bali coffee and forced myself to emerge from the trance I felt I was in. I started to laugh out loud at the absurdity of my life. The enormity of the event I was involved in was even stranger than my time in La La Land in Hollywood, just a few weeks before. I thought nothing could beat an invite to the Emmy award-winning premier of the Handmaid’s Tale in Los Angeles, yet I felt as though my life has taken me into another dimension of reality. But what did it all mean? This complicated process

was sitting at a pretty table decorated with a white table cloth and yellow ruffles. There were a number of tables surrounding me with identical

ornaments and plastic chairs covered with matching ruffle. The scene reminded me of the décor from a typical 1980’s wedding reception, a memory from many years ago in a different world, when I lived in Melbourne. Yet, I needed a break from the noise of the entertainment. I snapped back to reality.

began over 12 months before when I found out that one of my husband’s cousins and his wife were to be initiated as Sangeh’s first Sulinggih couple, the High Priest and High Priestess, at the ceremony known as Madwijati.

Witnessing this sacred ceremony was a once in a lifetime experience.

The ritual seemed to go on for hours and it kept the crowd awake, yet I needed a break. I snapped back to reality after finishing another cup of strong coffee. I was alone. The laughter had stopped. I walked back to the deathbeds. Our cousins had arisen and were saturated in Holy Water. The next process was similar to the three-month baby blessing known as Nelu Bulanin. After the caterpillars transform into cocoons, the farmers will put them in the pupa room. In this room, thousands of cocoons are hanging, each one is waiting to be a completely beautiful butterfly. In general, butterflies only live a maximum of 21 days. They spend their lives finding food or nectar by themselves, as well as reproducing, laying eggs and repeating that cycle of life all over again. The Kemenuh Butterfly Park was officially opened in September 2016, born from the idea of a Balinese man named Witaranya. ecember 14, 2017. My friends and I took a train from Jakarta to Purwakarta in West Java.

Sitting in the Argo Parahyangan 22, we prepared ourselves for a trip of a lifetime. We had been planning it for a month, so I was really excited that we were on our way to our destination. After about a one and a half hour of train ride, we finally arrived at Purwakarta Station. Before we left the train, I did a final check on my belongings and made sure that I had the letter that my husband signed the other day – it was a crucial letter requested by the hotel we were going to stay at. I also sent a short message to my parents, just so they

LEARN FROM NATURE The beauty of this island has been so captivating that I decided to ride over 700 miles from Jakarta to start a new life in Bali. For the past 10 months, I have been exploring the island from the east to the west, and the journey has been truly remarkable. Discovering beaches, hiking the challenging paths on the mountains – I managed to capture numerous pictures, but the adventure is more than just photos. It is about going beyond my limit and learning from the nature. I realize that courage brings new extraordinary experiences. And I admire how the nature gives us endless beauty without asking anything in return. By Jaka Dwi Dharma Instagram: @jakadharmacamera

Cai Tao is the male panda, and his name actually means a charismatic or a noble man, while the name of the female, Hu Chun, means a lake in the spring or the beauty of nature. HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
