and that’s why this village is known as one of the biggest orange producers in the Kintamani area. Oranges from Bunutin Village are famous for their quality, as well as their juicy and sweet flavor. And just like the rest of the Balinese villages nestled on the foot of the mountain, the Bunutin Village also holds on to the “Ulu Apad” system, a traditional community structure with Jro Kubayan as the leader who will conduct the Wali Penguangan ceremony. Wayan Rungu, another key member of the village, also explained that the villagers hold two ceremonies that are similar to that of the Balinese Silent Day. The first one is the Nyepi Desa where the people must restrain from doing any kind of activities for a day, just like on the big Silent Day that is celebrated throughout Bali to commemorate the New Year of Saka. The second one is Nyepi Tegal where they are restricted from going to the farm or field. In the old days, Nyepi Tegal or also known as Nyepi Uma

(farm) used to be held in almost every village in Bali when the rice grain began to bloom. But now, only a number of villages still host this tradition.
THE BIG DAY A day prior to the big ceremony, the villagers hand in hand prepare everything, including butchering beef meat for offerings and for food. On that day, the young men start to make Mongah – a kind construction covered with leaves – at the front yard of the village temple. The bamboo constructions are created as big as the body of the young men that will pull the Mongah. Different kind of leaves, mostly ferns, are gathered from the nearby forest for decoration.
The Baris dance is commenced before the Mongah dance.

THE RIGHT PLACE, THE RIGHT TIME
It was around 4 a.m. one day in early December 2017 and I was just north of Ubud, driving to Kintamani to photograph dawn skies and hopefully a sight of Mount Agung spewing forth an ash cloud. My two previous attempts earlier in the week were wasted trips due to low cloud, fog, and rain. I departed from Sanur and have learnt over the years that the weather between Sanur and Kintamani is simply chalk and cheese. No matter what the Sanur sky looks like, it’s no guide whatsoever to what the light and skies will be in Kintamani. It must be the microclimates or something. Driving early in the morning anywhere in Bali is an interesting pleasure. No traffic hassles, but it is surprising how vibrant the village markets are even at this hour. The working hour for many Balinese starts at around 3.30 a.m., and by 4.30 a.m. the markets are buzzing. A few spots of rain on my windscreen was a sign I had wished would never come. I considered briefly turning back home and getting some more sleep. Yet, I kept going anyway. As I went past the fruit stalls just below the Kintamani ridgeline, fog started to thicken up. And when I started the final 10-minute ascent, the visibility was down to a few meters. I tailgated a gravel truck to help keep me on the road. These guys can do this drive in their sleep! I reached the ridgeline and turned towards the Ulun Danu Batur Temple. It was an eerie sight in thick fog and I thought it would be another wasted journey. But, I pushed on to the spot I have in mind, which on a clear morning usually gives a great view of the four volcanoes; Mount Agung, Mount Batur and Mount Abang in Bali, and Mount Rinjani in Lombok. Shortly after 5 a.m. I arrived at my spot in the darkness and fog. I left my gear in the car and patiently waited for first light. Dawn was at 5.50 a.m., but on a clear morning the first colors of dawn light appeared around 30 minutes earlier. The first thing that caught my eye was the sky directly overhead that was clearing a little. A few minutes later, I then spotted what looked like an enormous black cloud high in the sky in the direction of Mount Agung. At first I thought it was simply a dark rain cloud, but it looked different. I then realized it was an ash cloud from Mount Agung blowing south east. I quickly went back to the car to get my photography gear. Much to my surprise, the fog in front and below my vantage point started to disperse quickly. Before my eyes was a stunning view of Mount Agung spewing forth an enormous black ash cloud, silhouetted against light of early morning. At last, I was in the right place and at the right time to take some memorable shots of Kintamani at its most magnificent moment. The dragon within Mount Agung’s chambers had awoken. This is all happened in December of 2017. Several weeks have passed now, and I hope the Gods prevail. Mount Agung has returned to its peaceful state, and Bali resumes to its harmonious existence with nature and the universe. THE SONG OF DRYNESS When the sun moves slowly to her majestic throne, The dry sea sings, Marring the thanksgiving of the Universe. In color, in curve… Flores… a collection of this island has long been a dream. The word Flores is born from Portuguese which means “flower”. O My Lord, It is not just the magical three-colored shades of the three lakes, or the native villages that live with their ancestors. Even the natural weaving is capable of making us fall in love. When only summer left with wings, stems and noises in the hills, our breathing was stopped by admiration. The land is vertical and horizontal, and morphed into flowers… Flores! The hotel team really prepared everything perfectly, including providing light bites and mineral water to fill our stomachs in the car. Once we arrived at the market and got out of the car, Chef Made Putra explained the rules. “The dishes you will cook today are Grilled Fish wrapped in Banana Leaves and Balinese Minced Fish Satay. We will give each group an amount of money to spend for the ingredients,” he stated as he handed in an envelope with Rp. 100,000 inside. “You have 40 minutes to shop, and return here when you’re done. Purchased in 2014 by owner Todd Gisondi, the traditional Phinisi wooden boat hand-built by craftsmen in Bira in Celebes is equipped with air conditioning and comfortable beds for 10 guests, spacious dining and recreation area, and a cozy top deck with loungers and daybeds to chill after a surf session or watch the magical sunset over an iced cold beer. And most importantly, they take you to places where there will be just you and your friends out in the ocean, surfing pristine waves with no one else around. What more you could ask for? This is the ultimate choice for a remarkable surf trip with a unique ambience for major relaxation. A number of professional surfers have had their share of this surf trip, such as Jack Freestone, Mikala Jones and Italo Ferrera to name a few. And how could they not resist it? Bulan Baru’s excellent crew takes you on a cruise from one world-class surfing destination to another with a breathtaking view of Indonesia’s tropical paradise. The cruise also comes with complete facilities, such as an amazing chef on board who will prepare delicious food every day, a standup paddleboard (SUP), those who want to go fishing or SUP paddling in between surf sessions. NINEYEARS AND COUNTING Celebrating their ninth anniversary, The St. Regis Bali hosted a remarkable “Cheers to Nine Years Gala Dinner”. Each of the nine courses – including a dessert by Indonesian celebrity chef Farah Quinn – was paired with fine wines from Frankland Estate. The night was made alive with jazz tunes by Bonita & the hus BAND, as well as a predinner sunset cocktail, door prizes, silent auctions, and fireworks to close the party. www.stregisbali.com BALI&BEYOND.CO.ID/JAN - MAR 2018 77

HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
