TEAMTALK

ANOTHER JOURNEY TO GO… ‘Om Swastiastu...’ It’s unbelievable how fast the time flies! Last month I had a gathering with friends from high school and realized it’s been 10 years since we graduated in 2001. I am having the same feeling while writing this Team Talk because I feel like I just finished writing the previous month’s Bali & Beyond Magazine’s Team Talk, and now here another Team Talk is here already for the October edition. But this is life; we grow up and have to get through the journey. Sometimes we stop in some destinations or another, but the journey goes on until we finally join Mother Earth and get back to what we were made of. For the Balinese, this SeptemberOctober is Sasih Kapat, the fourth moon of its calendar cycle that is also the ‘spring time’ when flowers bloom and the new life starts. This month is the right time for Balinese to take another step in their life, to engage in a lifetime commitment of two grownups sharing love and life ‘til death do them part. Known for its cultural event, a Balinese wedding ceremony is also very interesting to find out what is the real wisdom behind every activity in the ceremony, in our Craft & Culture story. After those tiring times preparing for the big day, the newlyweds take a break to spend the early sweet moments in the sanctuary. Bali is a favorite honeymoon destination that offers an unforgettable honeymoon experience, and in this edition we bring you ideas so you can best enjoy your honeymoon in the island, where to go and what to do in our Invite & Indulge and FotoFolio, which will show you how wonderful it is to have “Nuptials at Nunia”. Still talking about a newly unity, our Pondering Point discusses about issues that always happen in mix marriages. As home to multicultural ethnicities, Bali has 6

many love stories from mixed couples that have blossomed on the island. The number of mixed couples is growing all the time, and that’s why we think it’s necessary to explain about issues that always happen in mix marriages. It’s not a detailed explanation; you still need to contact a lawyer, a wedding agency or your embassy to ask about further information regarding this matter. Don’t forget to check out what is going on in Bali. Our news features will inform you about the recent activities in the hospitality industry, events, and what has gone on around the island and in Indonesia. In October there are two internationally known celebrations that will be held. The Kuta Karnival will once again bring joy to all in a Celebration of Life, so don’t miss the celebration that will take place on along Kuta Beach from October 14-16, while the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival will gather writers and readers together for discussions about Nandurin Karang Awak, or Cultivate the Land Within. The UWRF will run from October 5-9. In Beyond Bali, we take you on a journey to visit Tuban in East Java. The town has been known as the ‘Town of A Thousand Caves’, which keeps a story about the glory of Indonesia in the past. But let’s also get updated with the town’s newest activity. Have you heard about Drum ‘N Bass parties? If you have never heard about them, you can open our Capital Corner feature that will give you some new options to hang out in the city. Well, perhaps we can hang out together sometime! So, to newlyweds, congratulation for your new journey of life! Love isn’t always as sweet as chocolate, but with strong commitment and great compassion, we can always solve our problems and at the end, and live happily ever after. ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

BALI&BEYOND OCTOBER 2011

Arriving at the New Junior Suite, I was pleased to open the door and see The Breeze’s themes well maintained throughout; with frangipani flowers, orchids, and a large flat-screen, a unified sense of being both surrounded by Bali’s ancient traditions and modern conveniences continued, inside. The suite’s fourth wall was but floor-to-ceiling glass doors with thick, earth-toned curtains to match the bedding and sofa. Doors opened on the pool and balcony, complete with sofas and tables and more orchids; the distinction between inside and outside blurred, and beach winds swirled in my room’s nooks, one large bathroom and a powder room, while I read. Oval stone tablet sinks, a deep bath, maroon-colored towels, and a myriad of other amenities made these two rooms more than inviting. But whether you’re on the first floor or the third, there’s always a pull to stroll out to use other nearby facilities, like the gym, the tennis court, or the internet cafe. The streets of Bali are a veritable maze that The Breeze’s considerate new design contrasts, thoughtfully. Though still more priceless experiences wait beyond the resort, a range of great clubs and restaurants are all in walking distance. The Breezes Bali is in downtown Seminyak, one of Bali’s more upscale areas, with equally upscale surf, clubs and restaurants. And for what can’t be reached on foot, the well-spoken

Front Office Staff can make the connections to get you there. I’ve never been to a resort that fosters such an openness to be included with the rest of the guests, however. As is very Balinese, whether with family, partner, or travelling solo and seeking thrills, you feel like part of a whole here. The swimming pool is tell-tale of their spirit of acceptance, as the family pool with its manmade beach connects beneath a narrow bridge to the well-stocked swim-up bar. And at the diverse breakfast buffet, waiting for my omelet to be folded like an envelope before me, I note that there appears to be no line to cross for families, couples, and singles to say hello. It’s not always this way at other resorts--or in other cultures. This alone is not one of The Breeze’s new developments, but something that brings guests back for another go. The more recent refinements at the resort speak of attention to detail, whether in terms of functionality, fancifulness, or tasteful decadence. The diverse menus of the two restaurants, the skilled masseuses at The Spa, the Gamelan-and-funk mix at the inner restaurant, the live entertainment at d’Base Restaurant, and even simply the fruit baskets, speak well of the resort’s impassioned designers, employees, and staff. Whether on a casual holiday, with family, or on honeymoon, this suite, like the resort, and the island it’s on, provides a complete experience of Bali.

CLEAN, CATEGORIZED AND COUNTED Maya Ubud Resort & Spa had participated in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup as its commitment in incorporating sustainable business practices. On September 17 ninety five hotel employees of all levels voluntarily descended the valley to the Petanu River that borders the entire eastern side of the property to remove trash from along 1,200 meters of the accessible river edge. On this one morning we cleared more than 1,459 items in some 21 trash bags weighing 204kgs. Every item found was recorded, categorized and counted, then submitted to the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The recorded data gives us a clear picture of the manufactured items impacting the health of humans, wildlife, and economies. As Ocean Conservancy’s 2011 report demonstrates, the body of data from the International Coastal Cleanup has inspired action to rid the ocean of harmful trash. HEALTH&MEDICAL Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
