PURPLE RAIN ‘Om Swastiastu...’
February in Bali means that the weather is still fairly unpredictable – one day it might be sunny and the next day there might be a torrential downpour, or you might find both of those things happening within the span of two hours. But as you’ll see in this month’s FOTOFOLIO, it is business as usual here on the island despite the erratic weather, so take your cue from the photos and don’t let the rain get you down! We’ve researched some unique indoor activities for you and your family in

LIFESTYLE & LEISURE and we are also sharing our experience visiting the brand new facilities at the Westin Heavenly Spa (another great way to spend a few hours indoors while waiting for the skies to clear up). Relaxing sound of raindrops against the rooftop, anyone? And this being the month of love, we’ve pondered the meaning of “romance” in PONDERING POINT and compiled a number of special menus and programs that are being offered around the island (and Jakarta) throughout February and specifically on Valentine’s Day. So flip through the pages of this edition to learn more about them – you might just come across one that sounds perfectly suited for you and your beloved. We hope you enjoy February! Stay positive, stay dry, and before you go, repeat after us (sung to the tune of the popular children’s song): “Rain, rain, you can stay. I don’t mind you anyway. I’m in Bali, I can play. Rain or shine, it’s my holiday.”

EVENING SHOW ‘Devdan: Treasure of the Archipelago’ is a captivating 90-minute performance that combines storytelling with Indonesian dance and stunning aerial acrobatics. It’s a perfect way to stay dry indoors while getting a glimpse of the vast array of culture that dots the Indonesian landscape. The performance begins with two children who stray from their tour group in Bali and stumble upon a treasure chest full of iconic objects from around the Indonesian archipelago. As they pick up each object, they are magically transported to the source and greeted warmly by the locals. The children are introduced to the traditional dances, music, day-to-day activities and legends that are specific to each region, from Bali to Java, Sumatra, – and rather emotional – opening score. WE TALK BEEF WITH BEN BLACKMORE OF BLACKMORE WAGYU BEEF, WHICH IS PROUDLY SERVED AT SOME OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN JAKARTA AND BALI.
BBM: The Kobe Beef brand uses the Wagyu breed of animal to produce its famous beef. Authentic Kobe Beef only comes from the Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. Walking through the dimly lit hallways, the sheer, floral curtains hang down on both sides and up above you, making it feel as if you are being enveloped by the floral scent that permeated the kingdom following Jayaprana and Layonsari’s tragic deaths. The earthy color scheme and other representations of nature, from the curved paneling on doors and walls that resemble flowing water to the leaves that seem to be blowing across the walls, add to the surreal feeling of being in the forest where Jayaprana and Layonsari once tread.
HOLISTIC RENEWAL Westin hotels and resorts across the world emphasize the importance of preserving wellness while travelling, and the Heavenly Spa by Westin – the first in Indonesia – serves to do this and more by providing both a tranquil space and treatments that allow guests to emerge feeling renewed in body, mind and spirit. STAY IN
BED IF THERE’S RAIN – AND LOTS OF IT – WHY DON’T YOU JUST STAY INDOORS? OR BETTER YET, STAY IN BED! HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITE BEDS ON THE ISLAND TO CHOOSE FROM. By Ariko Ahmad
44
BALI&BEYOND FEBRUARY 2014
PLUSH, PLUSH, PLUSH The Westin Heavenly Bed has a name that is really self-explanatory. This bed is truly and utterly divine. The resort’s signature bed was first introduced worldwide in 1999 and features a 10 layer set, however, at The Westin Nusa Dua, the resort offers an eight-layer tropical version that is no less comfortable. The eight layers are comprised of a custom-designed soft pillow-top mattress set, a mattress pad, two crisp 250thread count cotton sheets, a fluffy duvet and duvet cover and five down-feather pillows for a very special slumber experience. We wager you won’t want to get out once you’re in. www.westinnusaduabali.com
CONTEMPORARY CHIC If modernity is what you desire, then you should go no further than the Le Méridien Jimbaran. Their beds are designed by Nick Dine, a prominent furniture designer and a member of the chain’s hand-picked group of creatives called LM100. The beds boast a sleek and fresh European feel, and lying in between their soft 250 thread count sheets and silky duvet, you will have one of the best sleeps you have ever had. If you’re able to stay in one of their Lagoon Access rooms, you can slide the door open and jump straight into the pool after waking up feeling refreshed. www.lemeridienbalijimbaran.com

STATELY LUXURY “Indulgingly luxurious” is the term that best describes The Mulia Bali’s uber-comfortable beds. The bedding is made 100% from the finest cotton and ranges from 400 to 1,000 thread count, the pillows are amply filled with hypoallergenic down feathers and the mattresses are more-than-ordinary sized. The Mulia’s beds are easily qualified as top category when it comes to comfort and being stately. The thick and soft pillows are a most pleasant feature – if you enjoy watching TV while lying on the bed you won’t need to pile up the pillows to comfortably position your head to face the screen. www.themulia.com
SUNSET IN BED There are many places where you can enjoy Bali’s memorable sunsets by the beach. But nothing beats viewing the beautiful pink sky and sparkling azure waters with your beloved from a big canopied bed with silky smooth 300 thread count sheets and plush down feather pillows. Where can you do this you might ask? That would be at The Legian’s Sunset Suite, which sits on the very top floor of the resort, lending you an unhindered view of the glittering ocean. One might even go as far to say that the bed is the most romantic in Seminyak.www.ghmhotels.com
46
BALI&BEYOND FEBRUARY 2014
DEEP IN THE FOREST Now for another romantic option, the Maya Ubud Resort & Spa. Actually, the word “romantic” doesn’t even come close to describing this lovely property. Get warm and cozy inside a canopied bed covered with soft 100% pure cotton sheets in their luxurious Petanu Presidential Villa. During the wet season, the temperature in the area can get quite low, so huddle up if you need more warmth! Another option is to jump into the huge Jacuzzi bathtub for swirling hot water. If Jacuzzis and private lap pools are a little too grand for your liking, try their Deluxe Pool DETAIL SHOTS BY ARIKO AHMAD ALL OTHERS COURTESY
Villas and Superior Garden Villas that feature canopied beds and are just as cozy. www.mayaubud.com
IN A CLUB OF THEIR OWN Club InterContinental’s beds are really in a club of their own. Exclusive to this class, the beds are oversized, covered with sleek 300 thread count linens, equipped with a feather bed topper and come with standard feather pillows, but there’s also a pillow menu available to assure your most absolute relaxing slumber. As for the room, how is it different from any other room in the resort, you might ask? The Club InterContinental is like a resort within a resort – it has its own pool, private butler service, a dedicated private concierge lounge and you’ll have 24-hour access to the exclusive Club Lounge. bali.intercontinental.com

RIC Sembalun Lawang: (0878) 6334-4119 THE SUMMIT CLIMB: TWO OPTIONS The most popular route is the 5-day trek starting at Senaru and finishing at Sembalun Lawang. Sembalun is the second option – this is a 2-day return trek that is very steep and quite grueling. Tips: It is mandatory to take a guide. Registration is at either RIC in Senaru or RIC in Sembalun. It is advisable to take a porter. Guides will only carry a light daypack, so one or two porters are needed to carry your food and supplies.
The local people, known as Wetu Tulu, combine three elements in their faith – Islamic practice, ancestral worship and to a lesser degree, animism. They seem to like to do things in threes, praying three times a day (instead of five) and embracing the ideal of the Holy Trinity: the sun, the moon and the stars, which are representations of heaven, earth and water. The other Wetu Telu village you can visit is the Senaru traditional village, which has 20 families living

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
