INTRODUCTION

CLIMATE CHANGE CONCERNS REFLECTED IN BALI AWARD SCHEMES The 2019 BALI National Landscape Awards in association with headline sponsor Green-tech have given members of the British Association of Landscape Industries – the UK’s leading trade body for landscape professionals – the unique opportunity of showcasing their expertise and professionalism to a wide audience. BALI Registered Contractors and Designers across the UK, and internationally, lead the way in designing, constructing and maintaining schemes that inspire us with their creativity and innovation, using unique and high quality products and services from our BALI Registered Affiliates. This year’s Award winners demonstrate, once again, why BALI professionals are held in such high esteem across the world. As we review this year’s winning projects it is evident that BALI members are becoming increasingly aware of their role in tackling climate change. The landscape industry is well placed to help mitigate the effects of this global threat, as evidenced by some of the international BALI Awardwinning schemes designed to manage storm water and flooding on a huge scale. But mitigation, as we are finding to our cost, is not enough. Architects, developers, landscape architects and garden designers can help educate their clients to support landscaping schemes that, from construction through to their ongoing maintenance, have a low carbon footprint. It is encouraging to see amongst this year’s schemes the frequent use of landscaping techniques such as extensive/intensive green roofs and living walls, the re-purposing of used materials, and the use of products manufactured

from recycled materials. BALI Registered Affiliates are working proactively with industry to develop products that are truly sustainable and have the least possible impact on our environment. 2020 is the International Year of Plant Health and there will be a drive to heighten public awareness of the threat posed by plant pests and disease. Whilst plant imports are bringing new pests and disease to UK shores, climate change is also re-drawing the map of the world as warmer temperatures change the behaviour and reach of plant pathogens. BALI continues to work closely with Defra contributing to the Plant Health Alliance on plant health and biosecurity and promoting best practice to our members and their customers. This year’s BALI Awards ceremony at JW Marriott Grosvenor House, London, has brought us together once again for a wonderful celebration of the very best our industry has to offer and we thank Chairman of the Adjudication Panel, John Melmoe, and his fellow judges for their dedication over several months of visiting all the entries, speaking to clients, designers and contractors, reviewing the international entries, and writing up copious reports on the schemes for the deliberation at the end of August. Commenting on this year’s Awards, John said: “I was delighted to

be asked to take over from Greg Allen as Chairman of the BALI Awards Adjudication Panel; my first Awards at the helm has been both a pleasure and a privilege. The Awards judges have again shown rigour and complete impartiality in their decision making and their deliberations have led to recognition for the wonderful schemes in this publication. This year we were heartened to see the outstanding quality and attention to detail shown in the domestic schemes, as well as an increase in the complexity of some of the commercial entries. BALI members working in their respective sectors have raised the bar yet again and I and my fellow judges congratulate all the Award winners for 2019. We hope those BALI members who have yet to enter the Awards will find inspiration amongst this year’s schemes and we look forward to seeing their companies amongst the entries in 2020.” Finally, the annual BALI Awards ceremony would not take place without the financial support of our headline sponsor Green-tech and our other industry sponsors listed on page 7 of this brochure. We thank them all for their invaluable support, which enables the work of our members to reach a wide audience, inspiring those coming into the industry in the future to achieve great things.

GROUND CONTROL THE CHILDREN’S GARDEN, ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS KEW Client Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Architect & Designer Ground Control and Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Maintenance Contractor Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Suppliers Day Group, Duncan & Grove, Handspring Design, KBI UK, The Millboard Company

The first significant development within the Kew Gardens estate for over a decade, The Children’s Garden is a play and learning environment like no other. Unrestricted by the constraints of the classroom, children of all ages can enjoy this beautiful adventure space unaware they are learning about nature, plants and the environment as they play.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The quality of the finish on this hard and soft landscaping scheme is absolutely superb. The contractor has embraced the design and created an amazing play and learning space for children, complete with a beautifully constructed oak tree circle walkway, meticulously installed play equipment, carefully sited rockery boulders, and a skillfully laid plethora of different surfacing including artificial grass, composite boarding, gravel pathways and safety surfacing. Every aspect, without exception, has been tackled with skill, precision and exemplary attention to detail. The planting scheme softens and enhances the hard elements and, despite the garden’s popularity and consequent heavy use, seems to thrive in spite of the attention of many small hands and feet. This is landscaping at its very best and a worthy winner of this year’s BALI Grand Award.

LDC PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN LEYTONSTONE Architect & Designer Studio Loci Maintenance Contractor LDC Suppliers Architectural Plants, Fountains Direct, Green-tech, LDC, SBS

The client brief for this small, narrow garden of a terraced property in north east London was for greater privacy whilst retaining an area large enough for hosting guests. At the core of the design process was sustainability. All the finishing material and soil, apart from the lightweight soil for the green roof on the shed, was either recycled or from the site. Water recycling was also part of the sustainable design. The green roof acts as a water harvester, connecting to the tallest raised planter to help irrigation. Water is also harvested from the house roof to form a water feature, counterlevered to the eastern boundary fence line and connecting directly into the pond from which the overflow is connected to the lower bog garden raised planter. The raised planters create interesting levels and screening, framing the main seating area to the back of the garden. The fencing utilises different timbers and sizes to create a staccato effect for added interest and contrast. The tropical planting scheme softens the hard landscape elements and provides year-round privacy.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The use of reclaimed materials and strong planting has transformed this small garden into a truly magical space. It is a calm oasis in an urban setting, achieved on a small budget and with sustainability at its heart. A beautiful scheme executed to a very high standard and to the clients’ absolute delight.

This was a very challenging site logistically with difficult access and limited space in which to work and store materials during the build. Steep banks on two sides of the plot required significant structural support by way of block retaining walls before the very detailed and labour intensive design could be implemented. Using a combination of new, traditional and recycled materials, the contractor has created a lovely space for entertaining, incorporating fixed seating within rendered block planters, a feature paved area, an outdoor kitchen, and solid structural planting. The contractor’s attention to detail has resulted in a very attractive scheme.

The materials and finishes used to create this small rear garden have ensured it integrates seamlessly with the adjacent interior kitchen/dining area, matching the contemporary style to provide a sleek yet cosy outdoor space. High quality finish and attention to detail make this the perfect family garden, both a relaxing room for grownups and flexible space for children. An artificial lawn features a generous hardwood bench with storage, surrounded by flower beds planted with Amelanchier trees, mixed evergreens and herbaceous perennials. There is a cleverly designed play house for the children with pull-out sand pit.

The owners of this terraced property in Brighton wanted a low maintenance, contemporary courtyard garden that would provide a view from their kitchen and greater privacy from surrounding properties. The contractor has created a charming space, utilising bespoke cedar screening, careful planting, and overhead ‘sail’ shading to give privacy and create a cosy feel. A floating cedar bench hovers over a perfectly executed porcelain floorscape, which extends from the kitchen and connects the indoor and outdoor spaces. A cedar storage cabinet with green roof reflects the screening and an angular metal line detail leads the eye around the garden.

A priority for the design of this garden was to provide interesting views and focal points from the house and to screen the garden from neighbouring properties. All the rooms, including a beautiful contemporary extension, have several viewpoints looking out into the garden. All boundary fences are painted in a dark colour so that they disappear behind layers of trees, climbers and evergreen shrubs, providing not only privacy but also a green curtain that envelops the space giving it a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. Composite decking provides a seamless flow from the house interior to the garden, allowing space for dining and relaxing. It is laid at different angles to both soften the rigid shape of the extension and enhance the sense of space. A generous artificial lawn in the middle of the garden follows the same angular layout, with low walls clad with dark, steel-effect ceramic, and Taxus baccata hedges marking flower beds and adding structure and volume. A powder-coated cantilevered pergola with a hanging chair provides the perfect place to relax surrounded by the garden.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The contractor has created a stunning outdoor space and shown meticulous attention to detail in both the hard and soft landscaping. Viewed from every aspect of the house, and from within the garden, it is clear that this is a class act, reflecting the contractor’s expertise and fulfilling the delighted clients’ brief.

The owners of this large Georgian house wanted an area created within the walled garden for entertaining and the existing overgrown areas rejuvenated. Being sensitive to their wishes that the project should blend seamlessly with house and grounds, the contractor has created extensive paved sandstone terraces with steps and circular seating areas and cleverly integrated curved brick and timber retaining walls that reflect the materials used for the pool house. This imaginative use of materials and levels throughout, combined with a lovely planting palette and subtle garden lighting, has delivered a beautiful scheme.

GARDEN CLUB LONDON PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN MIDDLESEX Designer Garden Club London Suppliers Champion Timber, London Stone Paving, Vande Moortel NV

This very small and claustrophobic rear garden of a new-build terraced property in Teddington has been transformed by using raised beds to introduce layers to the space, bringing a sense of scale and proportion to the garden. Vegetation was introduced at ground level, in the raised flowerbed and finally with formally clipped tree canopies to break up the extensive rear boundary wall. A soft, light palette of neutral colours and off-whites is used throughout, and features such as a floating dining bench, oversized planters and a carefully designed lighting system complete this now beautiful and functional space.

The design for the garden of this large Edwardian terraced house was strongly influenced by the clients’ and designer’s love of Japan, creating a contemporary garden for city living with an intimate space in which to entertain friends and family. With no rear access to the garden the contractor built a relationship with the end-of-terrace neighbours so that materials could be brought more easily onto site. This now beautiful garden links the indoor and outdoor spaces. Lush planting, exquisite stonework and a charred timber facia create the Japanese feel to great effect, with lighting bringing the garden to life at night.

The property, a converted barn, sat awkwardly in its surroundings with no relationship to the garden and landscape beyond. The drive that leads to the rear garaging divided the space, cutting across the visual line from the house and presenting a major design challenge. The key, therefore, was to create a garden immediately outside the new timber and glazed extension and to form an entrance courtyard gated off from the rest of the property. Strong visual lines now draw the eye and create links throughout the space. Structural planting, pleached trees, hedges and topiary provide screening and a structural backbone to the garden, contrasting with the softer planting and wildflower meadow on the opposite side of upgraded drive. Natural Yorkstone has been sensitively used to link with the paving already on site and Chelmer Valley brick detailing provides additional interest and a subtle link to the property’s past use as farm buildings.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This beautiful scheme has been sensitively designed and executed, completely transforming the property. There were difficult levels for the contractor to work with but the excellent choice of materials, beautiful plant selection and meticulous attention to detail throughout has resulted in a landscaping masterclass.

This small garden was something of a challenge for the contractor in terms of access and space, providing an opportunity to undertake some technical and precision work, which has been executed to an extremely high standard. A mixture of terraces and steps were constructed using Yorkstone, second hand London yellow stock bricks and clay paviours. Over 25m of drainage was required and a large number of hidden retaining walls were built right up to the house allowing maximum use of the space. Bespoke trellis and pleached trees provide screening and a detailed lighting scheme transform the garden into a magical space at night.

The clients - a young professional couple with children – wanted a low maintenance, contemporary family lifestyle garden that would sympathetically pay homage to their home’s Georgian Regency roots. Day-to-day living spaces and thoughtful transitional pathways lead to the different outdoor areas; a safe children’s play area, a kitchen garden with greenhouse, terrace, lawn and an outdoor covered living space with an open fire for heating and cooking, heaters in the ceiling and feature lighting. It provides open plan living and entertainment space for all members of the family. British materials were sourced where possible and the scheme executed with great attention to detail.

Following works to refurbish and extend the kitchen of a large manor house, and with only a basic specification and sketches available to follow, the contractor has turned the adjacent space into a beautiful courtyard garden. A Portland Stone terrace has been laid to the same level as the interior flooring and steps lead down to further paved areas, brick features and resin-bonded gravel paths. Together with the raised water feature and attached rills, the hard landscape elements show excellent detailing throughout. The calming atmosphere created within the space is further enhanced by the line of pleached trees topping the surrounding walls and the lovely planting.

The owners of this lovely period house in the centre of Harrogate wanted a child-friendly garden and space for entertaining. Working closely with the clients the contractor has created a modern, low maintenance scheme with bespoke features, including a laser cut Savannah frieze at the end of the garden and stretching its entire width. In front of this is a feature floating patio that provides an additional space for entertaining. The patio adjacent to the house is at the same level as the interior flooring and is accessed through bi-fold doors. Artificial grass and a bespoke children’s den make this a family-friendly space to be enjoyed.

THE OUTDOOR ROOM THE RIBBON WHEEL GARDEN Architect 800 Group Designer Butter Wakefield Garden Design Maintenance Contractor The Outdoor Room Suppliers Architectural Heritage, CED Stone Group, Home and Garden Ironwork, Hunza Lighting

This hugely complex design for a small space consists of an intricate series of ten interlocking paved circles, each one different in design and size and including various formats of setts, pitchers, cobbles, and bespoke radial-cut Rothendale Yorkstone. A banding of cobbles – the ribbon – connects the circles. Beautiful oversize circular copper planters sit in the centre of several circles with lighting and irrigation feeds coming up into the underside of the containers. The table circle was designed specifically for the table supplied so that the leg footprint would sit stably on sawn stone rather than unevenly on cobbles. A new slot drain running along the length of the boundary wall assists drainage. Beautiful planting enhances the relaxing ambience of the scheme.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The artistry and precision required by the contractor to create this singular space is astonishing. Despite the wide range of different types of hard landscape materials used they have been meticulously set out and finished, clearly demonstrating the contractor’s eye for detail. All aspects of this small yet challenging scheme, including the space-appropriate planting, have been beautifully executed.

Following the full refurbishment of this large residential property, the contractor was commissioned by the clients to realise the design for their extensive grounds. Working from only basic plans they have created a lovely garden with entertaining areas around the swimming pool and in shadier areas. As the pool was out of square with the house the paving had to be trimmed on site to ensure the laying pattern tied in to the corners of the house. All brickwork, paving and Chelmer Valley clay paviours have been beautifully laid showing great attention to detail.

OUTDOOR OPTIONS BELVOIR HOUSE, CROWN HEIGHTS, GUILDFORD Client John & Penny Fairley Designer Anthony Paul Landscape Design Suppliers International Timber, Jacksons Timber, Landscapeplus, Outdoordesign, S3i Group

Working in partnership with the garden designer, the contractor has totally re-landscaped this challenging sloping garden, overcoming site access issues and the natural topography of the site. By using a series of stepping decks constructed using materials from existing solid structures together with new materials, they have reduced the need for excavations and for removing old terraces. New sleeper walls and steps form part of the garden’s structure and a cantilevered deck reaches out above the slope to provide views of the stunning Surrey Hills beyond. A water feature with filtration system, all paving, planting and a lighting scheme complete this lovely garden.

This large, sloping garden overlooking the Fal Estuary extends down from the house to its private landing stage at the water’s edge. Working from the designer’s plans, and despite difficult access, the contractor has undertaken a complete rebuild, including demolition of the existing structures, intricate restructuring of the garden levels and formations, construction of extensive drystone walling elements using local stone, hard landscaping of seating and barbecue areas, and all planting and turfing. The re-use of onsite soil and hardcore and the selection of local stone have contributed to a scheme that is sensitive to its location and environment.

LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATES PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN WANDSWORTH Designer Cleve West Landscape Design Suppliers Lichen Garden Antiques

This late Victorian property in London is on the edge of Wandsworth Common. Whilst the clients enjoy the proximity of their home to the Common they wanted to retain their privacy, enhancing the intimate nature of their rear garden and optimising views from the drawing room and newly-constructed conservatory. With only one small gate for access, the contractor had to crane in some plants and paving materials over the house. The excellent contractor/designer/client relationship has resulted in an inspiring and unique town garden with Yorkstone terraces, a large sandstone boulder path, and exotic planting inspired by the clients’ fondness for the borders of Great Dixter.

LDC PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN ESHER Designer Designs For All Seasons Maintenance Contractor Andrew Coxon - Your Garden Needs Suppliers AHS, CED Stone Group, FTH Hire Group, MCM, Palmstead Nurseries

This large private garden in Esher was re-developed in phases to compliment the clients’ newly built house. Having completed phase one of this major project, the contractor has now submitted phase two, the lower garden, for this award. Retaining walls, sawn sandstone paving, and a contemporary rose garden surround the infinity pool and pool house. Steps lead down to the lower bank where mature trees have been craned in and planted to provide pool users with privacy whilst retaining views out from the garden. Additional planting beneath the trees provides colour and structure when viewed from access road level. A comprehensive irrigation system has been installed on the bank to facilitate the establishment of the trees and plants.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS It is impressive and reassuring to see that the same high standards have been maintained by the contractor for phase two of this project – the lower garden. All construction, walling and paving has been installed with exacting precision and the planting scheme, including the challenge of planting mature trees, has been well executed.

Following the refurbishment and rebuild of part of the older college buildings, new landscaped areas were required. The contractor carried out all soft landscape works, including subsoiling, topsoiling, planting of mature trees, hedges, a mix of shrubs and perennials, and turfing, using nine different nurseries to complete the scheme. As part of the contract the contractor was required to inspect the principal trees and plants at nurseries in Germany and the Netherlands. The project was phased and included the visitors’ car park, tree planting in the Vice Chancellor’s garden, three courtyards, and a roof garden. The works commenced in early summer 2018 in one of the hottest summers for many years, creating a number of challenges for the contractor. Working closely with stakeholders and the head gardener at the college, the contractor completed the project to a very high standard.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This is an exquisite scheme where the quality of the ground preparation is evidenced by the subsequent success of the expert planting. Careful species selection appropriate to each aspect and location has resulted in plants that are establishing very well and that are, without exception, a delight to behold.

NT KILLINGLEY UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON, WATERSIDE CAMPUS Client Bowmer & Kirkland / Kier Construction Architect Arup Designer LUC Main Contractor Bowmer & Kirkland / Kier Construction Maintenance Contractor NT Killingley Suppliers AHS, Crowders Nurseries, Lindum Turf, Van den Berk Nurseries, Wildflower Turf Under separate contracts the contractor worked closely with both Bowmer & Kirkland and Kier Construction to deliver an exciting campus for the University of Northampton. The new Waterside Campus is home to 14,000 students, with 1,000 students living in the new accommodation village. The 58-acre brownfield site was formally the home of a large coalfired power station. The area has now been transformed following the demolition of the power station and the moving of high voltage infrastructure. The contractor was instrumental in delivering the soft landscaping scheme across the entire campus. This required the local sourcing and then spreading 50,000m3 of multiple growing mediums, supplying and installing 4 ha of wildflower seeding and 2.5 ha of amenity seeding, laying 1.6 ha of amenity turf and 0.8 ha of bespoke grown wildflower turf, and planting 1,100 no. standard trees and semi-mature trees, 100 no. mature trees, and 80,000 no. mixed shrubs, herbaceous, ferns and grasses. This challenging project was undertaken on a constantly developing site requiring the Killingley delivery team to be at its best.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS Despite numerous logistical and climate challenges, the contractor has delivered an extremely competent scheme that has established well. Good ground preparation and management of the numerous growing mediums combined with strong planting techniques have ensured students at the university’s Waterside Campus will enjoy their surroundings for years to come.

Celebrating 100 years of the Rothschilds family at Exbury Gardens, Hampshire, the Centenary Garden was designed by garden designer and great granddaughter of Exbury Gardens’ founder Lionel de Rothschild, Marie-Louise Agius. Opened to the public this summer, the garden was constructed on the site of a former tennis court. The elliptical sunken garden at its centre leads to the five arrows of the Rothschild crest, created in black Caledonian slate set in the Yorkstone paving. A large drainage system was installed and Breedon gravel paths edged with 6mm steel provide access to and around the main gardens. A large curved laminated bench to the south provides a perfect resting place to view the entrance through a bespoke oak pergola. In addition to installing all the hard landscaping elements the contractor worked alongside the Exbury Gardens team to plant the garden.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The beautiful design for this garden has been brought to life with skill and precision by the contractor. In addition to the complex paving design and excellent brickwork, all other ‘hard’ aspects, including the installation of gates, trellis and seating, have been completed to an exceptionally high standard.

A sculpture, created from 31 individual stainless steel tubes and entitled ‘Infinite Wave’, is at the memorial’s centre and the surrounding stone amphitheatre creates a beautiful, serene and contemplative space where the victims’ loved ones and friends can spend time. The contractor worked closely with the steel fabricators and other suppliers, managing the entire project and setting out and installing the memorial’s foundations and surrounding granite blockwork with care and precision.

NAO LANDSCAPES BEDFORD HOUSE Client Oakdean Construction Architect Harper Downie Suppliers CED Stone Group, George Lines, International Timber, Soils and Stone

The landscaping of the courtyard of this new residential development in Balham, South London, proved a major challenge for the contractor. The courtyard is ‘landlocked’ and the building is positioned in a residential area next door to a primary school, which restricted the times when deliveries could be made. The long, narrow courtyard comprises a range of complicated hard landscaping features with particular attention paid to a varied use of materials, play equipment and textures, including resin bound gravel, granite paving, sleepers, rockery, artificial green wall and fencing. All aspects, including a SUDS system, were installed to a high standard.

One Blackfriars, a mixed use development on London’s Bankside, is immediately identifiable by its 170m high tower containing 274 highend apartments. At the base of this iconic residential address is a 5-star boutique hotel fronted by a stylish landscaped piazza. The contractor has undertaken all works, including site clearance and excavation, site preparation, waterproofing, installation of natural stone walling and dressings, laying of paving and all surfacing, installation of street furniture, decking, boardwalks and bridges, and irrigation, fountains and water features. All soft landscaping was also completed by the contractor. A particular challenge with this contract was the installation of three 13.2m long by 3.47m wide stainless steel canopies over the hotel entrance. Crane access on this busy London thoroughfare had to be carefully planned and the canopies located on their stainless steel pins with great precision to avoid damage to the building.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The contractor’s positive relationship with the client was key to the success of this excellent scheme and is reflected in the quality of the finish and the professionalism of the delivery. All hard landscaping aspects have been executed to an extremely high standard, enhancing still further the reputation of the One Blackfriars development.

GROUND CONTROL THE CHILDREN’S GARDEN, ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS KEW Client Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Architect & Designer Ground Control and Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Maintenance Contractor Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Suppliers Day Group, Duncan & Grove, Handspring Design, KBI UK, The Millboard Company

The Children’s Garden, funded by private donations and corporate sponsors, is the first significant development within the Kew Gardens estate for over a decade. The contractor worked closely with the Kew team to develop the initial design concept and has transformed a formerly under-used area into a unique space for children where they can play and learn how plants grow. The layout of the garden comprises four distinct zones representing air, earth, sun and water, each with its own play theme. The design and construction of the garden took into consideration the more than one hundred mature trees that had to be retained and these have helped in the mapping out and structuring of the four zones. One tree in particular inspired the Oak Tree Walk, a timber walkway that circumnavigates this 200 year old oak tree that is at the very centre of the garden and its focal point. Throughout the design and build stages, engagement with the Kew visitor community, local community groups, and organisations with a much larger public reach such as the National Geographic KiDS magazine, has raised the profile of the Children’s Garden and promoted it widely. It is now a hugely popular attraction with high footfall.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This is a fantastic hard and soft landscaping scheme, executed to an extremely high standard and with excellent final snagging by the contractor. The attention to detail and the precision craftsmanship demonstrated in every aspect of the construction and planting is exemplary. The quality of the finish is absolutely superb.

REGENERATION SCHEME – OVER £500K

BLAKEDOWN LANDSCAPES (SE) VENETIAN WATERWAYS, GREAT YARMOUTH Client Great Yarmouth Borough Council Architect & Designer Allen Scott Landscape Architects

The Waterways on the seafront at Great Yarmouth were designed as a tourist attraction in the 1920s using a landscape with novelty and stylistic effect, at complete odds with much of that period’s landscape design ethos of designing with the land and accentuating the natural beauty of a location. The canals and gardens were hand built and planted by over 400 unemployed men after WWI to provide work and to boost domestic tourism. The Waterways have now been restored using a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and funds from the Council. They have been re-injected with horticultural and rockery richness and retain their fun and nostalgic air. Their quirky distinctiveness and numerous and eclectic ornamental features, including an island thatched café, Venetian bridges, interlinking island rock gardens, cottage ornee style thatched shelters and expansive floral planting reflect the vibrant and extrovert nature of Great Yarmouth as a seaside resort. The Boating Lake has been structurally improved and re-lined to once again open for traditional rowing boat hire.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS Formerly a run down and neglected area that suffered from anti-social behaviour, the Venetian Waterways have been rejuvenated by the contractor, working alongside an enlightened local authority project officer who has used the limited funding in the best way possible by engaging with the community and securing the help of some 500 community-minded volunteers.

The living wall alongside the Metro viaduct wall next to Snow Hill Station in Birmingham was the largest in Europe when it opened in 2013. At 220m long and 7m high, and with 604m2 of plants, it is an eye-catching feature. As well as plants, the living wall incorporates decorative perforated aluminium panels, which have been designed to capture artificial and natural daylight. Programmable uplighters bring the wall to life at night and create constantly changing patterns and the illusion of depth and movement. The contractor’s maintenance team can only work at night when the Metro is not running and the power to the overhead lines is switched off.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This high profile installation is viewed by thousands of commuters each day, softening the urban environment and providing a pleasing aesthetic. The successful maintenance of the living wall is critical if the horticulturist’s skill is to be appreciated by the wider public; this scheme does much to promote the industry’s expertise.

This scheme comprises two roof terraces on the 9th and 10th floors of a high end office complex in Victoria. A selection of zinc and wooden planters contain mature olive trees and buxus grown as standards and these are underplanted with a variety of shrubs and herbaceous plants maintained in a client-led restrained yet wild overall exuberance. There is a water feature maintained by the contractor and the lightweight coir-based soil, which was specially mixed for the scheme, requires constant amelioration to keep it in prime condition. An automatic irrigation and feeding system has also been installed to ensure the planting scheme can cope with this exposed site.

The front garden and driveway of this Victorian semi-detached house have been landscaped in seamless detail with sophisticated blue-grey granite, which is smoothed and softened by rich planting. A ‘black planet’ puddle stone sculpture makes a bold statement and after dark, light permeates the stones from within, illuminating the planet’s core to dramatic effect. The back garden is for entertaining and relaxing with outdoor sofas and a sleek kitchen. Smooth Yorkstone pavers flow through the spaces, connecting the garden to the house, and a black granite water feature provides a focal point. The lawn is constructed on top of a rear basement extension, affording a sense of openness. Pleached trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses bring subtle changes in colour throughout the year and moments of bright accent. Cedar trellis unifies the boundaries and complements the architect-designed cedar shed. A luxurious roof garden with lavenders, thyme and sedums provides a private space in which to feel connected to nature in the heart of London. Every detail in the garden has been carefully designed, from the taps and bespoke pipe stands to the size of the pavers, and it has been created in collaboration with an exceptional construction team.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This beautiful scheme shows what can be achieved when great design is matched by the craftsmanship and attention to detail of an outstanding contractor. The relationship between the client, designer and the onsite construction team is of paramount importance if the designer’s vision is to become a reality - and it certainly has in this scheme.

The highly competent geometrical design links the house to the garden and each of the garden areas one to the other. A vast expanse of gravel and drive to the front of the house has been successfully transformed into an attractive garden space. The design for the rear garden is sympathetic to the strong lines of the house and to the natural/rural landscape beyond. The construction has been executed to a very high standard by the contractor with impressive attention to detail. Works included extensive hard landscaping, lighting, water engineering and all soft landscaping.

The small dimensions of the rear garden of this new development house in Teddington were worsened by the incredibly high boundary wall at the rear of the property, making the garden feel extremely constricted between the house and neighbouring properties. The clever design uses raised beds and layered heights of vegetation to introduce a sense of scale and proportion. Soft, neutral colours and offwhites are used throughout the garden as paint colour for fencing and rendered walls and in the choice of materials for paving surfacing. Exquisite attention to detail in both the design and construction has created a beautiful, functional space.

Architect Beijing Guohuan Tsinghua Environmental Engineering Design & Research Institute Co. Designer Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning and Design Institute

Wetland park of Huaifang reclaimed-water plant is the largest rooftop wetland park in China and also the first experimental design combining the wetland landscape with underground water treatment facilities. The site occupies 16 hectares, 13 of which are on the rooftop of the largest fully enclosed underground Huaifang reclaimed-water facility in China. The design uses the reclaimed water to create an artificial wetland on top of the treatment plant, which purifies the water before it drains into the out-park drainage system of Beijing. The whole wetland park has become part of the water processing stage. The design simulates the natural community structure, creating 103 different habitats. Terraced landforms have been constructed with net-mesh reinforced stone gabion retaining walls and many different types of vegetation to incorporate the floodwater management system. A new form of lightweight fabricated steel-structure walkway was designed for the park, stone-gabion retaining wall and some other lightweight construction materials for the low-load roof, and an educational cabin and wooden walkway constructed. The wetland park has brought social and ecological benefits to the city and is a paradise for animals and plants, demonstrating the harmonious co-existence of humans and nature.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This is an astonishingly impressive scheme where a complete wetland park has been constructed over the top of a waste water treatment facility, the largest of its kind in Asia. The engineering challenge alone is worthy of recognition but the environmental benefits that will ensue from the creation of this new landscape merit this BALI Principal Award.

Designer Ecoland Planning and Design Corp. Main Contractor/ Maintenance Contractor Shenzhen Guoyi Gardens Construction Co. Suppliers Dalian Fanchao Space Sculpture Engineering Co. The garden of this residential community in the ancient Manchurian capital of Shenyang combines simple, sophisticated planting with decidedly modern hardscaping, encapsulating the essence of Chinese imperial style – expansive, exuberant and enlivening. Conceived as a collection of outdoor rooms, the garden serves as a meeting place for residents. Mondrian-esque lines divide the entire garden into smaller functional spaces, which are enhanced by larger-than-life ballerina sculptures set atop the water features, and elegantly simple perennials, evergreen shrubs and deciduous trees. This serene space stands in steep contrast to the architectural excitement that is all around it, providing an oasis for residents and visitors alike.

SHANGHAI EDGING A&LA CO. LANDSCAPE DESIGN OF ROSE GARDEN OF SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY Client Shanghai Jiao Tong University Architect & Designer Shanghai Jiao Tong University/Shanghai Edging A&LA Co. Main Contractor School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Maintenance Contractor Shanghai Jiao Tong University The Rose Garden to the northeast of the administration building of the Minhang campus, Shanghai Jiaotong University, has become a beautiful space for students to spend time in and an impressive ‘welcome’ for visitors to the campus. Originally a linear, low-lying, waterlogged site with alkaline soil, the 4,000m² area had to be graded, storm water management employed, and the soil ameliorated to provide suitable conditions for the 42 rose types and other plants to flourish. This relatively low-cost project illustrates how campus sites can be enhanced cost-effectively and to the benefit of staff, students and visitors alike.

Completion of the project has relieved pressure on the Jiahe River as a floodway, improved the ecological environment, and delivered an attractive, low-maintenance green space for present and future residents of Yantai City, Shandong Province, to enjoy.

This jewel of a courtyard is a tranquil haven for relaxing - and also provides a beautiful backdrop with framed views from the kitchen. The central feature is a fish pond with a copper water feature. A curved laminated iroko bench flows from one side of the courtyard to the other, bisected by the pond. The timber adds warmth to the space, while the Venetian plastered walls and porcelain paving bring sophistication. Carefully integrated lighting provides drama and a sense of luxury. Courtyards are unique spaces that require special attention and every detail has been thoroughly thought through.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This is an exquisite design for a very tricky, small space. Working closely with the client, the designer has incorporated some beautiful features, including a back lit birch ply panel, mirrored mosaic tiles for the raised pool, and a stunning bespoke bench. The plant selection is superb and an exercise in restraint. The realisation of the design has been achieved with great attention to detail and finish.

The design for the front and rear gardens of this Victorian semi-detached house demonstrates the designer’s clear appreciation for the importance of material selection and the impact of bespoke detailing. The front garden and driveway have been landscaped in seamless detail with sophisticated blue-grey granite, which is smoothed and softened by rich planting. Every detail in the garden has been carefully designed, from the taps and bespoke pipe stands to the size of the pavers.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS Notwithstanding the obvious skill and precision demonstrated by the contractor to construct this stunning garden, it is the designer’s professional capabilities and eye for detail that have created it. Every aspect, from the hard landscaping design and soft planting scheme down to the bespoke design bin stores, shows the passion of the designer to exceed the clients’ expectations.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This new BALI member has represented the association in an exemplary fashion by demonstrating the ability to work professionally in a restricted space with logistical challenges, whilst the main contractor was still on site, and deliver a beautifully constructed scheme.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS By re-using both in situ materials and materials left over from other jobs, the contractor has been true to the ethos of sustainability. All paving, fence timbers, Cor-Ten steel cladding, topsoil and natural stone paving had had a previous life before gracing this lovely garden oasis.

GARDEN CLUB LONDON PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN LONDON Designer Garden Club London Suppliers Champion Timber, Landscapeplus, Namgrass

JUDGES’ COMMENTS This garden has entirely delivered on the client brief. The eye is drawn to the width of the space by the employment of exceptional design techniques, which have been brought to life by the equally exceptional construction skills of the build team. This is a prime example of designer/ construction team collaboration at its very best.

A sculpture, created from 31 individual stainless steel tubes and entitled ‘Infinite Wave’, is at the memorial’s centre and the surrounding stone amphitheatre creates a beautiful serene and contemplative space where the victims’ loved ones and friends can spend time. The contractor worked closely with the steel fabricators and other suppliers, managing the entire project and setting out and installing the memorial’s foundations and surrounding granite blockwork with care and precision.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS From the outset of this highly emotive project, the contractor worked professionally and sensitively with all stakeholders to deliver a beautiful and fitting memorial that will undoubtedly provide solace for those affected by this terrible atrocity.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The determination and enthusiasm of the client project officer for this ambitious scheme has resulted in a tremendous response from volunteers within the community. The contractor worked closely with all concerned to ensure their involvement was guided and valued so that volunteers will remain a vital element of this community project into the future.

Located at St Katherine Docks, London, these offices have an eclectic mix of interior plant displays giving a relaxed feel to the space. An impressive 18m x 2.3m living wall planted in waves creates a unique design and is the main focal point in the reception area whilst displays within the office and restaurant area range from small table arrangements to 2m tall floor-standing displays created using a varied selection of specimen plants, flowering Bromeliads and succulents - all of which inject a variety of colour and texture. The contractor maintains the scheme with two operatives spending approximately two hours per week on maintenance. The living wall is situated in the main thoroughfare and restricted access times in the busy restaurant require the team to carry out their duties with minimal impact on those working in or visiting this young company’s premises.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The client is to be congratulated on seeing the value of live plants in the workplace and being open to new and innovative ways of displaying them. The contractor delivered the greening elements for the 3,500m² rooftop garden on IKEA’s Greenwich store, which has been awarded a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ accreditation and is the company’s greenest store to date. The green roof and roof garden comprise biodiverse and sedum covered areas, a wildflower meadow, raised urban farming beds for school, community and co-worker use, planters, paving and artificial turf for community activities. All areas surround a purpose-built rooftop pavilion, accessible all-year-round during store opening hours. The roof is London’s largest accessible rooftop for people and nature, offering extensive secure areas for local birds, bees and insects.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS The decision to enter the BALI Awards can be daunting as it opens businesses up to scrutiny by their peers. BALI members who take that step for the first time are unsure as to where their scheme may sit in terms of excellence.
