annual report 2013–2014
Letter from Victor, Scott, & Adam Ballet West’s monumental 50th Anniversary Season was a true display of what the Company does best: inspiring programming, incredible dance, and world-class artistry representing the vision of the Company’s founder and pioneer of American dance, Willam F. Christensen. The 2013–14 Season honored Ballet West’s past by showcasing the very best of classical masterpieces, as well as contemporary and cutting-edge works by world-renowned choreographers. It also paved the way for its next 50 years with a groundbreaking for the Company’s move into its new home, a permanent, state-of the-art facility in downtown Salt Lake City, the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre. Among the many highlights of this milestone year was a week-long tour to Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theater, the reconstruction of Willam Christensen’s The Firebird, the world premiere of resident choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s spectacular The Rite of Spring, and the Ballet West premiere of Jiri Kylian’s powerful Forgotten Land. The dynamic close to every season is our annual Innovations, conceived by Adam Sklute to showcase new talent. This year’s program was no exception, including the critically-acclaimed world premiere of Principal Dancer Christopher Ruud’s Great Souls. With an eye toward the future, Ballet West also celebrated the loyalty of generous patrons and foundations that have ensured the preservation and growth of the Company, as evidenced by the renovated Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre and the new Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre. The Company also remained committed to education and outreach by touching the lives of more than 100,000 students and teachers as part of a mission to give every child in the state an introduction to ballet during their grade school years. Ballet West also welcomed many new faces and extraordinary leadership to its administrative and artistic ranks. Thomas Michel was chosen to fill the critical role of Director of Advancement and External Affairs for the Company, and Maestro Gerald Steichen took over as Ballet West’s Music Director. Jennie Creer-King also joined Ballet West Academy’s leadership to serve as Principal of the Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Ballet West Academy at Thanksgiving Point, a new satellite Academy in Utah County. Ballet West continues to be incredibly proud to offer vast and varied repertoire year after year to an expanding community whose enduring support lights the passion that sustains the art of ballet. The Company extends its deepest gratitude to all members of its family who have made the last half century an extraordinary collection of historical moments and prized memories. It is this passion for the art form and love of the Company that will propel Ballet West forward for the next 50 years and beyond. With regards,
Victor Rickman Chairman of the Board

50th Anniversary Season The Company opened the 2013-14 Season in November with a revival of Ballet West’s founder Willam Christensen’s Firebird, along with the stunning Petite Mort and Balanchine’s joyous Who Cares? The November Gala celebrated 50 years of artistic excellence, paying tribute to Willam Christensen’s legacy and honoring those who made it possible. In December, Ballet West returned to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, its newly-renovated home, with the holiday favorite The Nutcracker, followed by Adam Sklute’s romantic production of The Sleeping Beauty in February. The Company then presented another triple-bill in April: Ballet West resident choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s ground-breaking world premiere of The Rite of Spring, along with Jiří Kylián’s powerful Forgotten Land and Balanchine’s whimsical Divertimento No. 15. The season closed with the 6th annual Innovations program, a platform for up-and-coming choreographers to showcase their newest works. This year’s program featured guest choreographer Matthew Neenan’s intense world premiere of The Sixth Beauty alongside the works of four Ballet West dancers: Christopher Anderson’s Paths, Tyler Gum’s Inverted Affect, Emily Adam’s Mixed Signals, and Christopher Ruud’s grand-scale Great Souls. In the 2013–2014 Season, Ballet West sold 17,271 season tickets and 36,990 single tickets. Additionally, the Company helped more than 19,000 people attend performances through In-Theatre Student Presentations and Special Needs Nutcracker Performances, while reaching over 100,000 students and teachers through its other Education and Outreach Programs. Since 1990, The Utah Chamber Orchestra has accompanied Ballet West in numerous productions. Directed by Maestro Terence Kern‚ the Orchestra performed for almost 100 of Ballet West’s performances this year. Another milestone was recently reached as the orchestra was aptly renamed the Ballet West Orchestra under new Music Director, Gerald Steichen.

Academy ABOUT
SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM
The Ballet West Academy, the official school of Ballet West, is Utah’s premiere source of dance training, providing the highest caliber of ballet instruction to over 550 pre-professional students annually. It also provides training and insight to those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of this beautiful and demanding art form.
For eight weeks in June and July 2013, over 400 students participated in Ballet West’s intensive, pre-professional ballet training program. The program, which has captured the attention of up-and-coming dancers internationally, is designed for serious students ages 12-26 who desire individualized instruction. The mission of the Summer Intensive Program is to guide them in their ballet technical skills, as well as other dance forms that compliment a ballet artist.
Along with its unique relationship with the professional Company and artistic staff of Ballet West, the Ballet West Academy has a superior faculty of nationally renowned instructors who are dedicated to developing and inspiring the “whole child,” both as accomplished dancers and healthy individuals. Academy students experience a structured curriculum offered in a nurturing and positive environment, targeting and exploring each student’s individual strengths and abilities. The Ballet West Academy Professional Training Division was created in 2009 by Ballet West Artistic Director, Adam Sklute, to extend a dancer’s formal training post-graduation. This elite and talented group of young dancers experience an expanded schedule of technique classes, rehearsals and coaching, in addition to on-going Academy classes.
The program was held at the University of Utah’s Alice Sheets Marriott Center for Dance, and offers unparalleled training by a distinguished staff of Ballet West Academy instructors, University of Utah instructors, Ballet West Artistic Staff (featuring Artistic Director Adam Sklute), Ballet West dancers, and world renown guest teachers.
Groundbreaking A major milestone for Ballet West occurred on September 16, 2013, when the official groundbreaking ceremony took place for the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre and the renovation of the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. The renovated Capitol Theatre re-opened on December 1, 2013 with the season’s production of The Nutcracker. Ballet West anticipates it will move into the new Ballet Centre in January 2015, significantly expanding the number of Company and Academy rehearsal studios. The new Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre, a permanent home for Ballet West, has been the most extensive portion of the project. The new facility, currently under construction, is located immediately to the west of the existing Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. Upon completion, it will be home to five new dedicated, state-of-the-art rehearsal studios, which will instantly quadruple the capacity for training and rehearsal, creating a permanent location for Ballet West’s professional and pre-professional Academy. To honor those who contributed to Ballet West’s Capital Campaign, a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of the new Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre will be held early in the 2014–2015 Season. The Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Ballet West Academy at Thanksgiving Point will open in Utah County during the 2014–2015 Season. The satellite Academy will provide comprehensive ballet training for ages 3–18 including the highest caliber of instruction, personal and professional development, and professional performance opportunities.

This allows all elementary school children in the state to experience at least one Ballet West presentation during his or her grade school years. The most recent program, titled Ballet and The Nutcracker, was presented by a touring group of Ballet West II dancers, along with a narrator. BALLET WEST STUDENT IN-THEATRE PRESENTATIONS — During 2013-2014, students had the opportunity to attend 16 in-theatre presentations from story ballets such as The Firebird, The Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, or The Nutcracker, or from the Company’s Innovations program, which presented newly choreographed ballets such as Paths by Christopher Anderson, Great Souls by Christopher Ruud, and The Sixth Beauty by Matthew Neenan. FIRST LOOK allows students in grades nine through twelve to become further acquainted with ballet, with the opportunity to see the first dress rehearsal of Ballet West’s regular Season productions in downtown Salt Lake City’s Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. Ballet West is an American Guild of Musical Artists Company, International Alliance for Theatrical Stage Employees Company, and American Federation of Musicians Company
A Look Ahead: The 2014-2015 Season Ballet West’s 51st Season will showcase a broad spectrum of dance featuring some of the greatest choreography of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The season will explore the magic and details of the great classics while also celebrating the masterworks of the mid 20th century and reaching uncharted territory with new, cutting-edge creations.
Opening November 7, 2014 is the premiere of Adam Sklute’s newly concieved production of Giselle set to the romantic music of Adolphe Adam. Giselle is ballet’s first ghost story – a tale of love, betrayal and forgiveness from beyond the grave.
Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker is nearing it’s 60th year and is a beloved holiday tradition for generations of Utah families. Playing in December, it is considered one of the best “Nutcracker” productions by The New York Times. It is also the longest running production in America.
Adam Sklute’s 2010 production of Swan Lake makes its triumphant return in February, 2015. Hailed by critics as “Simply stunning”, “Dazzling”, “A production audiences will treasure”, the ballet of a sad prince, an evil sorcerer, and a beautiful woman turned swan embodies the triumph of true love. With heart-stopping music by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is the quintessential ballet. It is a tour-de-force for the lead characters, but also for the entire company. Spring 2015 will enable the Company to show off its versatility and power with a triple-bill program entitled Almost Tango. Featuring the Ballet West premiere of Nicolo Fonte’s ballet of the same name, the stylish, contemporary work explores relationships with evocative romantic interludes and dynamic, powerful dancing. Opening the program is George Balanchine’s joyous and fast-paced Square Dance that humorously mixes the Baroque strains of Vivaldi and Corelli with a live American square dance caller, none other than our own Adam Sklute. Ballet West’s 51st Season closes with the Company’s annual Innovations program. Set in the more intimate Jeanné Wagner Theatre, Innovations enables audiences to get an up-close look at their favorite dancers with a greater sense for the control and muscle that accompany the art form. The program includes Nicolo Fonte’s sleek and glamorous Presto, created for Ballet West’s 50th Anniversary Gala, a new full act work by Ballet West soloist Emily Adams, and a world-premiere by Utah native and internationally-rising choreographer Garrett Smith. Also on the program will be two shorter works by Ballet West artists. photo credits top to bottom: principal arisist Arolyn Williams photo by Beau Pearson , ballet west academy student Madison Young, soloist Beckanne Sisk photo by Beau Pearson , soloist Allison DeBona first soloist Adrian Fry photo by Beau Pearson , first soloist Jacqueline Straughan photo by Erik Östling
