I was trying so hard not to write about the weather here because it’s become a comically overused theme in this editorial, but it seems almost impossible. The weather is an Emily Lullo omnipresent facet of our daily lives, something everyone in editor this community shares. It’s the small talk topic of choice in every elevator, with the mailman, with the people in the gym you see every day but don’t really know and with anyone else who has to be near you for more than three seconds. This seemingly idle chitchat about the weather is what binds us together as Pensacolians—nay, as humans! It is out of our control. We are all at the mercy of its wrath or are the beneficiary of its metaphorical good will. So this month I say to you, readers: How. About. This. Weather! Seriously, it is amazing out there, and this month you can take full advantage of the glorious offerings from the weather gods at some of the area’s most tried-and-true events and activities. Right off the bat, there’s Gallery Night. We’ve waited two long months and now it’s back with all the trappings of a perfect night out in Downtown, but this edition has a jazzy twist. It’s being held April 5 in conjunction with Viva Pensacola Jazz, a weeklong celebration of jazz that culminates in the 30th annual Pensacola JazzFest, which will take over Seville Square April 6-7. See our Official Guide to Gallery Night starting on page 18, and read all about the fest on page 14. Also, this month brings us UWF’s Festival on the Green. This festival truly has something for everyone. Dog lovers, fans of creative anachronism, arts and crafts collectors and people who just like to spend a spring day out of the house will all have a great time. A lot has changed just in the five years since I graduated from UWF, so I definitely want to check out what’s new at my alma mater along with all of the regular FotG festivities. Has it been five years? Now I feel old. Along with these time-tested events, we’ve got some newer activities that will surely become traditions in Pensacola’s future. The second season of our Double-A baseball team the Blue Wahoos kicks off on April 4. Sitting in that stadium, beer in hand, looking out at the water while hearing the crack of a bat is the ultimate celebration of gorgeous springtime weather. And, hey, on the way to the game, stop by Al Fresco, the much-buzzed-about outdoor dining concept at Main and Palafox. There are yet many more new bars, restaurants and attractions on the horizon here in Downtown Pensacola, so best to just come on down here at least weekly and Contact me at have a look for yourself. So come Emily@Ballinger Publishing.com out. Our benevolent or write to meteorological P.O. Box 12665, overlords compel you. Pensacola, FL 32591-2665.

John Durden What is something new you’ve tried Downtown recently, or something you’ve been meaning to try? Something I’ve been meaning to try is the tour of historic Pensacola. What forthcoming new Downtown attractions are you looking most forward to and why? I can’t wait to try out the food from the Al Fresco food trucks. What Downtown spot will always be your old standby? One of the first places I ever visited Downtown was Global Grill. My first experience there was fantastic not just for the exceptional food, but also the entertainment; a live classical guitarist. I’d have to say that if I had an “old standby spot,” this would be it. Josh Flores What is something new you’ve tried Downtown recently, or something you’ve been meaning to try? In recent months I’ve been attending Bikram Yoga classes at Breathe Yoga Studio on Adams St. From the moment I step onto the mat, I experience positive change: greater energy, strength, flexibility, balance and an enhanced sense of inner calm. I appreciate every class I’m able to attend and the benefits could not be more necessary in my life’s present stage. What forthcoming new Downtown attractions are you looking most forward to and why? I’m really, really looking forward to Duh’s new remodeling that will feature the culinary work of Chefs Blake and Amber Rushing. I expect Duh will come through on their end with some outstanding ambiance and the Rushing team is never shy of remarkable cuisine. What Downtown spot will always be your old standby? That’s a tough one since Cap’n Fun’s Downtown is not open. Most frequently I find myself pin-balling between 5 1/2 and Sluggos, but overall I’m fairly nomadic with my hangouts.

Mary-Kathryn Tanner What is something new you’ve tried Downtown recently, or something you’ve been meaning to try? I’ve been intending to venture on over to the Bodacious Brew because I’ve heard that it’s a great place to get coffee and tea drinks at good prices. I plan to post up there with my laptop and sip on a chai latte very soon. What forthcoming or new Downtown attractions are you looking most forward to and why? Old Hickory Whiskey Bar sounds good to me! I’m a country girl that enjoys a good, strong whiskey on the rocks. What Downtown spot will always be your old standby? The Elbow Room will always be my standby. My friend and I like to maintain our high scores on the Photo Hunt game while listening to the jukebox and sharing a mushroom pizza. It’s a Pensacola tradition!
Cover Contest Sponsored by The Fish House
Calling all artists and designers! We’re looking for one of you to design the cover for our June 2013 edition of Downtown Crowd. While we love coming up with monthly cover designs for DTC, we want local artists to get in on the action! The winner will get their work on the cover of the magazine as well as a Q&A inside the edition. The winning cover will be revealed at an unveiling party at the Fish House Deck.
Here are some examples of past covers to get the creative juices flowing:
Winner 2012
Some Guidelines DTC is a free arts and entertainment monthly publication, and we’ll be looking for a cover that is creative and colorful and that entices readers to pick it up and peruse. Your cover can be anything from a painting, to a collage or photograph to a completely digital creation as long as it can be submitted electronically. Keep in mind that DTC is printed on newsprint, not a glossy magazine. There are no flagship events in the month of June, so for this cover we want artists and designers to get creative and show us your vision of Downtown Pensacola in the summer. You can use the multitude of summer concerts, free fun events, museums, parks, Palafox Market and/or Downtown’s everburgeoning nightlife to inspire your design.
Submissions MUST: • Be 7.75H x 9.9W, 300PPI, CMYK, and in .pdf or high resolution .jpeg form. • Be sent to Emily@BallingerPublishing.com by May 15. • Contain a 3.5 x 3.5 space in the upper left corner without text or necessary design elements for the DTC star logo, which we will place.
Designers can send up to two cover entries. Winner will be determined by Ballinger Publishing editorial staff. Decision of judges is final. For questions, please contact DTC editor Emily Lullo at 433-1166 ext. 29 or Emily@BallingerPublishing.com.

Viva Pensacola Jazz By Emily Lullo
What: Pensacola’s Jazz Fest Where: Seville Square When: April 6 and7, music from 10 am-6 :30 pm Info: www.jazzpensacola.com Pensacola’s Jazz Fest has long been a tradition that ushers in the spring and summer outdoor concert season with a weekend of jazz artists and ensembles in Seville Square that draws thousands to Downtown. This year the Jazz Society of Pensacola is celebrating 30 years of successful festivals with Jazz Fest April 6
and 7, and adding a week of events around the city as part of Viva Pensacola Jazz. Viva Pensacola Jazz is being promoted in conjunction with Viva Florida 500, the statewide celebration of the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s arrival on Florida’s east coast with the first convoy of European explorers to

document such a landing. For Viva Pensacola Jazz, concerts will be held in various locations in Pensacola, from venues along in Downtown, to Pensacola Beach, and to other stages throughout the city. “What we’re doing with that is we have over 40 events around town that are under that umbrella just as a way to have jazz all over town for a whole week,” says JSOP administrator and vocalist Kathy Lyon. At these events and at the actual Jazz Festival, music lovers will be treated to every style of jazz including big band, contemporary, Dixieland, traditional, New Orleans and Latin, as well as gospel, blues and more, and most concerts are free. A full list of events can be viewed at jazzpensacola.com. Some jazz concerts will be held in conjunction with other city events. At the University of West Florida’s Festival on the Green, look out for the UWF Jazz Ensemble with saxophonist Steve Williams on Friday, April 5, and on that evening, head Downtown for a jazz-themed Gallery Night featuring live jazz at a variety of participating venues. The grand finale of the week of concerts is the free two-day Pensacola Jazz Fest, held in Seville Square, with two days of continuous music from the pavilion from 10 am-6:30 pm. Each day will start out with offerings from the local level. “In the morning we feature middle school, high school and college bands, and all three of the local colleges—Northwest Florida State College, University of West Florida and Pensacola State College—are bringing in major jazz artists who will be performing with them, which is pretty exciting,” says Lyon.
On both days, attendees will be treated to showcases from headliners like charttopping vocalist Giacomo Gates, as well as The Harry Allen Quartet with famed tenor saxophonist Harry Allen. The latter group will also feature Italian pianist Rossano Sportiello. Also headlining will be Roman Street, a Mobile-based group that recently hit the top 10 in Billboard’s jazz singles charts in 2012. “They were part of our festival last year and they just knocked the crowd out,” Lyon says. “It was wonderful, so we’re having them back again this year.” Guests can make a day of it by taking lawn chairs or blankets to Seville Square to relax and enjoy the music. Between sets, check out artwork and other goods for sale from around 60 vendors, or grab a drink or snack from a vendor in the park. For kids, there will once again be a Jazz Jam for Kids on both days at 2 pm in the children’s area, where children are given kazoos and harmonicas and led by musician and music therapist Michael Potters through a simple jam session. Following the close of the festival on Saturday, April 6, attendees can get an extra treat with an all-star jazz jam hosted at the Fish House Deck at 6:30 pm, where Kathy Lyon will lend her vocal talents and lead a group of musicians in the session, some of whom were on stage at the festival hours earlier. With a weekend of art and music celebrating 30 years at this year’s Jazz Fest, and even more music in the preceding week with Viva Pensacola Jazz events, this year offers more than ever to jazz lovers. Get the full slate of artists and events at jazzpensacola.com.

MY CROWD
Cabaret Goes Broadway! By Emily Lullo
Colorful costumes, signature drinks, dramatic décor that evokes a mood and place: these are the elements of a great theme party. Themed parties are some of the most fun events you can attend, but your coworker’s 80s shindig has nothing on the Pensacola Little Theatre’s annual Cabaret. This year’s edition is bringing the stage to life with Cabaret Goes Broadway! The Pensacola Cultural Center will be the hottest party in Downtown on April 6 from 7 pm to midnight, presented by PLT and McMahon & Hadder. The rooms of the Cultural Center where the event will take place will each be themed as one of six famed Broadway productions. When guests enter the party, they’ll be greeted by scenes of Radio City Music Hall and the Radio City Rockettes, doing their iconic Christmas show. “Each room is going to have a different drink and this room’s signature drink is going to be called a high kick, which will be a kind of champagne cocktail,” says PLT marketing and special events coordinator Sarah Darden. While watching the Rockettes dance (or joining in yourself), guests can also check out a selection of over 30 silient auction items, which can be bid on any time throughout the night. Sports lovers can bid on signed footballs from University of Alabama
coach Nick Saban, New Orleans Saints running back Darren Sproles or New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes. Others might be interested in rounds of golf, a Botox treatment or facial, or a return of last year’s hottest seller: a chance to spend a day with the mayor. At midnight, come back to the gallery for a breakfast buffet from Portobello Market. The next room will be themed as the 60s inspired Broadway musical Hair. The groovy atmosphere will be supplemented with a full bar and food catered by Appetite for Life as well as live entertainment. “There’s going to be a great band called Shades. They’re an 11-piece band and they’ll be playing 60s music, 70s music and kind of a little bit of everything,” Darden says. Outside, visit the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, where gals will be lounging and members of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio will be performing and leading some line dancing. Keeping with the Texas theme, Hed’m Up Outfitters will offer savory barbecue, and guests can sit down in a cigar lounge area and play a few hands of poker. In the Valerie Russenberger Room, guests can let

out their inner felines in the Cats room, where karaoke, fruit, cheese, a chocolate fountain and a full bar await. The PLT Guild will host the mezzanine with the 40s military theme of South Pacific. Head there after dinner for coffee liqueur drinks, desserts and the sounds of Sharon Moore singing 40s style Broadway hits. In the rehearsal hall, guests will head Into the Woods, where princesses, magical castles and a giant beanstalk await. Jaco’s will cater this room, and Emerald City’s lovely Jewels of Emerald Coast will offer entertainment later in the evening. Guests are encouraged to come dressed as the stars of their favorite theme musicals, or in cocktail, formal or casual wear. Anything goes! Tickets to Cabaret Goes Broadway are $75 and include open bar and food throughout the night. A well planned night at this event includes great food and beverages, dancing, karaoke, music, games and more, and you can party guilt free since it goes to a great cause—supporting the arts. “All the money from the tickets goes to the Pensacola Little Theatre programming. So we can get better shows, more equipment, and new things like that,” Darden says. For tickets or more information visit pensacolalittletheatre.com or ring 434-2042.

Business Profile
ShoMe Prenatal Imaging By Josh Newby
Above: Shonda Hemby & Becky Ford Right: Shonda Hemby Far Right: Becky Ford
Upon entering the ShoMe Prenatal offices, expectant mothers—and whatever friends or family they wish to bring along—are welcomed into the homelike environment and intimate setting by trustworthy, knowledgeable technicians. From there, they are gently ushered into one of the most emotional and joyous discoveries of their lives. ShoMe Prenatal Imaging offers clients what very few other prenatal services offer: a relaxed, highly professional environment in which they can bond with and discover their baby outside the diagnostic and clinical restrictions of a doctor’s office. Becky Ford and Shonda Hemby, who have been running the center for the past year, are certified and trained not only in conventional 2-D ultrasound, but also in the subspecialty of 3-D ultrasound and 4-D ultrasound technology and techniques. This passion and pride in what they do is matched only by the quality of service they provide. Although the center offers non-diagnostic elective imaging and services, not designed to replace regular prenatal doctor’s visits, the duo is highly competent and any abnormalities they notice in the ultrasound will be brought to the patients’ attention. Nevertheless, the main focus of the service is
enjoying the miracle of life and involving friends and family. “We want our clients to feel cozy and non-rushed,” said Hemby, who pointed out the comfortable seating, tranquil lighting and non-medical atmosphere. “Doctors are focused on making certain the baby is healthy, which is of course of the utmost importance. What we provide is a longer peek at this new life, and we work with clients to bring forth the fun aspects of ultrasounds.” “When we were mothers, we wished we had this opportunity to just appreciate the beauty of seeing our baby’s prenatal development,” added Ford. “We give that opportunity to our clients with a variety of services and packages designed to meet their desires and their budgets.” Depending on the stage of pregnancy the baby is in, the ShoMe team offers 2-D still images, 3-D still images, and 4-D technology to bring those images to life. These files can then be burnt to CD and DVD so the parents-to-be can share the viewing with everyone. ShoMe also offers baby showers and pregnancy classes on-site to facilitate an inclusive and exhaustive non-medical experience. “Many mothers will come in and have the 4-D
ultrasounds put on DVD so they can share them with anyone who couldn’t make it to the actual appointment,” explained Ford. For those wanting their family and friends to be there for the experience, ShoMe offers a large, private room with couches and chairs so that everyone can be involved. “Many women want their friends, family and colleagues to take part in the imaging process,” said Hemby. “For those who want a little more privacy but still want others to take part in the experience, we have a separate viewing room where just the ultrasound is visible.” 3-D and 4-D imaging is not done until the fetus is at least 24 weeks old. That way, the image will be more fleshed out and the baby will have somewhat definable and recognizable features. 2-D imaging can be done as early as 16 weeks to determine the sex. “The entire observation is very emotionally enriching,” said Hemby. “Obviously, the mothers have the front-row seat to the pregnancy for all nine months, but this imaging provides fathers and siblings-to-be a behind-the-scenes peek and allows them to bond prenatally.”

Film In which we unfairly judge coming attractions based solely on their trailers By Josh Newby
What I’ll be spending my $8 on: Evil Dead In theaters: April 5 Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas What I got from the preview: In a remote cabin, on a dark and scary night, five friends discover a book of death that they then use to unwittingly draw forth the demons living in the woods. The whole night just goes downhill from there when an evil presence possesses one of the friends and picks off the others, until only one is left to gruesomely fight to death for survival. You know, the usual. Most notable for: This film is a remake of the popular, genre-bending film of the 80s that put director Sam Raimi and campy, cheap, so-bad-it’sgood horror on the map. Unqualified critical observation: While the original had dark humorous overtones, it appears that this reincarnation, penned by Juno writer Diablo Cody of all people, will deliver all scares and no laughs. The tagline promises me that this is the most terrifying movie I will ever experience, and as a fan of horror films big and small, I am intent on seeing if it makes good on that guarantee.
42 In theaters: April 12 Starring: Harrison Ford, Chadwick Boseman, Alan Tudyk What I got from the preview: The story of the nowimmortalized jersey number 42 and the man behind it (finally) comes to life on the big screen. The 1940s Brooklyn Dodgers were one of the first teams in the nation to introduce a black man into the major leagues, thanks mostly to the support of team executive Branch Rickey, played by Harrison Ford. Racial tensions, baseball showdowns and impassioned speeches—oh my! Most notable for: Jackie Robinson’s story has been told countless times in many ways, yet it has never received the major studio treatment. The story of one of the greatest American sportsmen to ever live is being brought to life by relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman. Unqualified critical observation: Don’t ask me why, but sports and racial issues work supremely well when combined in the movies. (See also: Remember the Titans, Glory Road). I hope that this one is no exception. I find sports in their televised and live versions boring, but I am quite excited to hear the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd in this film. Oblivion In theaters: March 22 Starring: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo What I got from the preview: Tom Cruise plays a New York Yankees fan (you can tell by his hat and other ineffective efforts to make him an everyman) that is sent to Earth to destroy the aliens still remaining from an intergalactic war that ravaged the planet (you can tell by the gray landscapes). All of a sudden, a wise old man who looks a lot like Morgan Freeman tells him not all is as it seems. Tom rebels against his orders in order to discover the truth. Most notable for: Another entry in the growing subgenre of Tom Cruise Resurgence Films. I wish studios would stop trying to make this subgenre happen; it’s never going to happen! For other examples, see Jack Reacher, Knight and Day, and Valkyrie. Unqualified critical observation: Having Tom Cruise in a movie used to mean a guaranteed good time, but now it means a likely disappointment. The film’s concept is interesting enough, and Morgan Freeman’s presence almost makes me think this will be an exception to this subgenre’s rule, but I do not have high hopes.
26 The DTC • April 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com
Pain & Gain In theaters: April 26 Starring: Mark Whalberg, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson What I got from the preview: Mark “I believe in fitness” Wahlberg is looking pretty white for a fly guy in this film about a couple bodybuilders who get caught up in some sort of criminal scheme. The film almost reeks of gym sweat and protein powder, which, as I know from my three months of weightlifting in high school, is not a good combination. Although the film is directed by Michael Bay (maker of every bad action movie you’ve ever seen), this movie seems like it has enough self-aware humor and bromance to keep it fun. Most notable for: Muscles. Unqualified critical observation: Something about this movie’s shameless formula, ludicrous nature and charming leads makes me believe it will be top-notch escapist entertainment. Don’t go to this movie if you want to be challenged and experience a gamut of emotions; go to this movie for some harmless, testosterone-fueled fun. Seriously, a cast hasn’t looked this fun since Ocean’s Eleven. Also, and I have no reason to suspect this is the case, but I’m holding out for at least one scene with a close-up, muscle-flexing handshake, à la Predator. Mud In theaters: April 26 Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon What I got from the preview: Two boys discover an abandoned loner on a beach, and soon become friends with him. Throughout the course of the preview, we discover he is running from the law and trying to be reunited with his lost love. The boys help him on this venture while wondering what it was that got him in trouble in the first place. Most notable for: This movie looks like another great acting exercise for McConaughey, who survived for years on his goodnatured but slow Southern personality. Now, he is putting those characteristics to work in more complex, nuanced, awardworthy roles. Unqualified critical observation: I’d be remise if I didn’t include one independent feature with this list, and what a feature this is. It is being heralded as the best American film at Cannes. This is a movie for the thinker, for those who appreciate the slow build toward dramatic tension and confrontation.

Culture and Fun Under the Florida Sun
By Josh Newby
There are few attractions more anticipated in Pensacola than the deluge of annual festivals that dot the spring and summer calendars, and while some cater to specific interests and tastes, there are some that transcend those to guarantee a good time for all. The University of West Florida’s Festival on the Green is just such an event, with an eclectic blend of music, art, entertainment, education and fun—for adults, kids, and canines alike. The festival, which draws about 20,000 attendees annually, is April 5 and 6. This spring marks the 13th year the celebration has encouraged Pensacolians to shed their sweaters and scarves for a fun time in the sun. Festival on the Green is the perfect opportunity to experience the charm and creativity that is native to our region before the familiar and sweltering heat of summer arrives. Participants will be surrounded by Pensacola’s rich history and diverse culture, hosted by one of the
area’s largest nature preserves. As usual, the jam-packed schedule features 20 different venues with a little something for everyone, including a crafts fair, entertainment stage, fine arts show, Native American village, local food vendors, a children’s area, dog sports exhibition, motor enthusiasts show, sporting events and trolley tours, among other enthrallments. “The festival brings as many events as possible together to showcase our campus and our partnerships,” said Jeff Comeau, director of Festival on the Green. “All events are connected to the university or our students and employees. This is an annual spring celebration of our many collaborations with our friends and neighbors.” The Green Trading Post, a venue for environmentally friendly products and demonstrations, will be one of the new features to look out for at this year’s festival. It will be available for earth-conscious festival-goers on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Michael Brant DeMaria, a local psychologist, poet, artist and musician, is the featured guest at this year’s Festival on the Green. On April 6, the university will host a Peace and Healing Concert with DeMaria from 7 to 9 pm in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Music Hall. The four-time

Grammy nominee, award-winning composer and five-time No. 1 chart-topping recording artist is a multi-instrumentalist with six released solo albums to date. Attendees can plan on the sounds of Native American flute, piano, synthesizer and percussion instruments to accompany their rest and relaxation. The concert is free, but tickets are required. A maximum of four General Admission tickets per person will be available at the University Commons Service Desk. The schedule promises many more performance and music options, as well, including the McGuire’s Pipe Band, the Not Quite Fab Beatles tribute band, the Belmont Youth Band, belly dancers, cheerleaders, jazz dancers and more. Of course, no festival would be complete without a perfect balance of local and international cuisine, and this year’s event offers menu options that include everything from Caribbean choices to local seafood sure to satisfy even the most diverse appetite. For those looking to catch some friendly competition, UWF teams will be going head-to-head with regional rivals in baseball, softball, tennis and rugby on campus. The festival also offers an array of senior-friendly activities for participants age 55 and older, hosted by the Leisure Learning Society and the Center on Aging. Festival on the Green represents the very best of what Pensacola has to offer: culture and fun under the Florida sun. All festival events and times are subject to change and rain plans. Candy Shop
My Favorite Things Traditional Breakfast Part gift shop and antique store, part coffee house and part candy emporium, My Favorite Things recently added to its already impressive list of offerings a full service restaurant open for breakfast and lunch. The unique shop was once a mainstay in Pensacola, but then closed for over a decade before returning in November 2011. Located at 2813 E. Cervantes St., the offbeat shop and restaurant truly has something to suit anyone’s tastes. “We have a really varied menu which is nice, so it’s not just a soup and sandwich shop, and we serve breakfast all day long,” says manager Heather Hart. Among the many options, there are several daily soup choices and plenty of sandwiches to choose from, all of which are served with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, which can also be purchased deli style by weight to take home. Look out for more unique incarnations of that Boar’s Head meat, like a special chocolate dipped bacon that’s often served up in the candy and coffee shop. The menu also includes entrees like grilled shrimp and vegetables, wasabi crusted tuna, and homey favorites like pot roast. For lighter fare, there are also a bevy of fresh salads on the menu, which are customizable with nuts, veggies and any toppings you wish to add. Breakfast is quickly becoming a specialty of the restaurant. Served all day starting at 7 am on weekdays, the fresh breakfast choices include omelets, Belgian waffles, and several egg dishes served on your choice of a variety of flavored bagels that are shipped directly from New York, like the Bagel Ranchero or the BBLT&E (Bagel BLT with egg). “One of our signature dishes is the Bagel
Benedict,” says Hart. “Having that on the bagel and being able to choose your option for bagel flavors is just something unique and interesting, so we do a lot of Bagel Benedicts.” Patrons can also stop in before work and grab a coffee with a dozen assorted bagels to bring to the office. There are freshly baked muffins and pastries for coworkers with a sweet tooth. For the brunch set, My Favorite Things opens at 9 on Saturday and Sunday, and offers mimosas and savory bloody Marys made with sake. Wine and beer are also available, along with floats, shakes, Italian sodas and any coffee drink you can imagine. A quaint outdoor deck and seating area decorated with stone fountains, quirky statuary and local found object art is the perfect place to enjoy a drink or a meal in the temperate spring weather. Inside, the dining room offers a taste of the antique and restored furnishings that are prevalent in the attached shop, with innovative DIY décor ideas and accents covering every wall. In the coffee and candy shop, where along with a full service coffee and espresso bar, guests can buy a variety of custom ground coffee beans to take home. Across from the bar is a wall of glass jars filled with colorful candies and confections, and a glass case of roughly 50 different chocolate truffles ranging from simple chocolate or red velvet to jalapeno or pomegranate flavors. The candies can also be wrapped up in custom candy plates or boxes, or guests can even pick something out from the store like a decorative trivet
or tray, to fill up with treats for a gift. “You can come in and get a nickel’s worth of Jelly Bellies or we can do it by the pound,” Hart says. “It can be really interactive, especially with the candies and coffee.” There are often new and unexpected items to taste in the candy and coffee room—like ice cream flavored malt balls or chocolate covered gummy bears—and likewise, throughout the store the whimsical art, gifts and antique furniture are always changing around and expanding the offerings. Hart says it’s a constant evolution, and you can follow My Favorite Things on Facebook for updates on upcoming additions (like weekend dinner hours and local ostrich egg specials). “What makes it fun to come here is that it’s a different experience every time, but with all those same things that you always expect to have like the gourmet candies, the good food, and the NY bagels, and great coffee,” she says.
