Editor’s Corner

CONTENTS

May is always an exciting time of the year for me, not only because it’s my birthday month (hint, hint), but because it’s the perfect time of year for reading outside, grilling out, long waterfront jogs, and generally seeing the Emily Lullo city burst to life. Despite the ever-closing gap between my editor current age and 30, I’m in the habit of indulgently celebrating my birth all month long. This May brings plenty of party to Downtown Pensacola, and you’re cordially invited to join the fiesta. Not to keep talking about myself, but my birthday is on May 5, otherwise known as Cinco de Mayo or the Battle of Puebla Day. While you may find plenty of Corona specials on this day (which are offensive because Corona is terrible), there hasn’t been a true Downtown Cinco de Mayo celebration…until now! This year Palafox will host a festive celebration of Latino culture, food, music and more! Read page 28 for the details. Also in the first week of May is the annual Fiesta of Five Flags Crawfish Festival. I definitely have a little bit of bayou blood in my veins, because I love ripping into a freshly boiled, spicy crawdad and sucking his juicy little brains out of his head. This freshwater treat will definitely be on my b-day weekend menu, and I’ll be burning off the excessive mudbug calories at the Fiesta 10K on Saturday morning and dancing to some Cajun beats that night. See all the Crawfish Fest has to offer on page 14. May 17 will bring another edition of Gallery Night. Last month I made a point to get Downtown early to see everything I could, walking down Palafox and Government checking out art booths and galleries, tasting a juicy pork taco at Al Fresco and grabbing a cold beer or two to cap off the evening. Quit dillydallying and get Downtown at 5 to get the most out of Gallery Nights! For even more art, stroll through the juried art show Art in the Park, presented in Seville Square May 11-12. With a multitude of artists and the picturesque backdrop, this show makes for a perfect warm weather outing in Downtown Pensacola. Turn to page 22 for the story. Last year we heard that it would be the final season for Evenings in Olde Seville, an announcement that left me heartbroken. This staple of Downtown was a free fun mainstay, and a tradition in my family since childhood. Well, it’s back! There’s a new organization behind it but it’s the same event Contact me at you’ve come to know and love Emily@Ballinger Publishing.com for the last 25 years. So grab a or write to P.O. Box 12665, blanket and meet me out there. Pensacola, FL 32591-2665. Birthday or not, May is brimming with awesome events and good times throughout the month. So, you coming? Respondez s’il vous plait!

Farmers markets have been in existence for many years, but the last 10+ years have seen an unprecedented nationwide

growth. According to the USDA, the number of farmers markets has grown almost 200 percent, from 2,863 markets in 2000 to 7,864 in 2012. As farmers markets continue to be fresh food mainstays, these numbers continue to rise. Farmers markets provide access for shoppers across all socioeconomic, political, and ethnic ranges. In addition, farmers markets are playing a pivotal role in the “Shop Local” movement. Farmers markets positively impact local economies, improve community health, and bring diverse groups of people together through a shared social space. the positive benefits it brings to Downtown Pensacola and the surrounding community. The Palafox Market was started in 2008, as a joint venture between the DIB and CRA, in order to increase additional economic development in our Downtown area. Over the last five seasons, the market has expanded to become a yearround event and a Saturday staple in Downtown Pensacola. On any given Saturday, the Palafox Market, which is now located in all three medians of the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza, hosts over 85 vendors and thousands of customers! Palafox Market customers come from all over the region, to shop for fresh local

seasonal produce, meats, and plants. Shoppers also love the delicious homemade foods, jams, sauces, and honey available at the market. The local shopping continues with the Art and Antique sections of the market! A Saturday shopping trip will reveal the award winning fine art, pottery, jewelry, an amazing variety of soaps and candles, custom textiles, unique antiques, and more! The Palafox Market is also considered a “must see and shop” destination for tourists visiting the Pensacola area. You might even see the chef from your favorite restaurant buying the ingredients to use in their next culinary masterpiece. The dedicated vendors of the Palafox Market offer items that are grown or made within 100 miles of Downtown Pensacola. Have a question about a product? The vendors of Palafox Market can answer it for you! Do you want to know: • When will my favorite produce will be available? • How do I keep this plant alive? • What are the benefits of local honey?

• How did you create this amazing painting? • What’s your best soap for sensitive skin? • Can you make some custom jewelry for my loved one? Palafox Market’s knowledgeable and accommodating vendors will have the answers to these and many more of your questions. Vendors vary weekly, so it’s always a great new experience shopping at the Palafox Market! As we look forward to another successful season, we invite you to come see for yourself why the Palafox Market finished in the top 10 in the country, and was voted #2 in Florida, in last year’s “America’s Favorite Farmers Market” competition! The Palafox Market is every Saturday, 8 am-2 pm, rain or shine. The market is located amongst the beautiful shade trees in Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza on North Palafox Street between Garden and Wright Streets. Hangout Fest Rocks The Gulf Coast

ChatterBox

By Josh Newby If your idea of hanging out involves high-energy features like sundrenched beaches, breezy nights, festival food, 35,000 spritely partiers and a lineup of music artists that rivals much larger events, then Hangout Fest is for you. After the dull, grey winter, you can renew your skin’s summer glow while basking in the Alabama sun as the Gulf’s natural background noises accompany today’s best radio hits, golden oldies and indie gems. The musical breadth of options is sure to satisfy even the most diversified audiophile. Headliners this year include Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Stevie Wonder, and Kings of Leon, an impressive cast of instantly recognizable artists whose unique elements of rock, folk, blues, funk and pop unite their audience and keep the party going. Filling in time between headliners are other talents intent on keeping spirits high. Listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs shout that “Heads Will Roll,” get down to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis as they rap about poppin’ tags at the “Thrift Shop,” and experience The Roots as they usher in “The Next Movement.” All in all, more than 60 bands will be charming attendees with their eclectic tunes. “This is the first year that we are staying with an almost identical footprint,” said Shaul Zislin, owner and founder of the festival. “This gives us the ability to fine-tune both our layout and logistics. Alumni will feel those adjustments in terms of improved services. First-timers, quite simply, will experience the magic of Hangout—there’s nothing like it.” The festival—which has been called the most fan- and artist-friendly music festival in the country—starts on Friday, May 17, and continues through Sunday, May 19. Early bird tickets have been sold out for months, but there are still plenty of tickets for all budget levels ready to be snatched up. All fans enjoy access to extraordinary amenities, including the comfortably shaded relaxation area, Hammock Beach; the Sky Bar tower, which offers 360-degree views of the festival; amusement rides and games; diverse dining options, including fresh Alabama Gulf seafood; and much more. “Hangout is an awesome beach party, one with the world’s best musicians as the guests of honor,” said Zislin. “What sets Hangout apart is our emphasis on location, quality and a positive fan, band and staff experience.” It is estimated that the festival—which has won the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards’ “Music Festival of the Year” title—generates approximately $30 million for the area economy over the course of the weekend. “Hangout draws a very diverse group from all over the country (with some domination by the Southeast),” said Zislin. Music-lovers and concert-goers are urged to bring beach towels, water containers and sunscreen. As for food and concert-necessary souvenirs, those are available on the festival grounds. With a few simple rules and a lot of great bands, a good time is guaranteed for all at this year’s fest, which promises to be the biggest yet. The idea for the festival originally stemmed from a desire to draw people to the beach and local businesses during an off-season weekend. Zislin—and 30,000 screaming fans—would agree the Hangout Fest does just that.

Kristen Land Where is your favorite Downtown spot to eat outdoors in the summertime? I’d have to say Jaco’s. The food is great and the view at sunset is absolutely stunning. Hub Stacy’s is a close second with their delicious sandwiches and ladies drink specials. What summer festivals or concerts are you looking especially forward to? Typically I use concerts as a means to visit other cities, however I look forward to shows at Vinyl yearround. The venue gives a more intimate feeling to performances, which I love. As far as festivals are concerned, I’m looking forward to the Crawfish Festival and Chalk It Up! I really enjoy Pensacola’s desire to support and showcase local artists. What is your favorite way to cool off when you’re Downtown on a hot day? Well, I do enjoy happy hour at Intermission. It’s a bit more low-key than later in the night and the people are awesome to talk with. One serious guilty pleasure of mine is a spiked milkshake from Tin Cow. The red velvet cake milkshake is beyond words.

Samantha Williams Where is your favorite Downtown spot to eat outdoors in the summertime? I think my new favorite outdoor Downtown spot is the Maritime Park, but as far as eating I think the seagulls would prove problematic. My old standby would be Sluggo’s or Seville Square, which is just close enough to the water. What summer festivals or concerts are you looking especially forward to? My answer to would have to be Hangout Fest! It’s a pretty cool and I think unique music festival experience, and the line-ups have been decently varied so there’s something for everyone. Between the five bands and musicians I care to see and the venue, I think it’s quite worth it this year. What is your favorite way to cool off when you’re Downtown on a hot day? My favorite way to cool off Downtown is to hang around the water and hope for a breeze. Also, I may get a beer and eat tons of fruit or grab a smoothie from Ever’man.

Evenings in Olde Seville Square is Back!

By Emily Lullo

Last summer, many in Pensacola were disheartened to learn that the beloved free concert series Evenings in Olde Seville Square would no longer be hosted by the Pensacola Heritage Foundation, and with no one to pick up where the foundation left off, it seemed the series was over. Recently, news spread that the popular Thursday night event would be revived after all, thanks to the efforts of a new nonprofit spearheaded by Jehan Clark. “The event had been going on for 25 years consistently and in other capacities for even longer,”

he says. “It is a part of Downtown Pensacola, a great free event for people of all ages, and something that is iconically associated with Seville Square. There was no way I could sit back and just let the tradition go away.” Clark started Events Pensacola, a nonprofit organization to oversee the event and worked with the Heritage foundation and Jim Greene to make sure the event’s integrity was maintained. Revitalized community members and musicians were eager to help with the upcoming season. “We have been very fortunate to have a huge outpouring of musical talent wanting to perform at the events, and we have also had several volunteers who were as passionate as we were to keep it alive, reach out and offer to help,” he says. The event will kick off for a 12-week season on May 23 at 7 pm with the usual series openers: the Pensacola Civic Band and the McGuire’s Irish Pipe Band. Thousands will fill the Square with blankets, chairs, picnics and children for one of the most popular summer events in Pensacola.

Clark says the season will bring a diverse lineup of acts that includes old favorites as well as some new additions. “We will have music that ranges from jazz to big band to bluegrass, to reggae. We will have some great local favorites that play originals as well as covers, a Beatles tribute band, an 80s band and much more!” There are still challenges ahead though. Raising the funds required to pay for the permits, police, insurance, sound equipment, bands, and everything else it takes to put on a free event of this size and nature is difficult and requires funding and sponsorships. Attendees can support the event by purchasing memberships, which cost $20 and will include an Evenings in Olde Seville Square branded item, quarterly email newsletter, entry into drawings, and any special offers or discounts offered by event sponsors. For more information on the event or to volunteer to help out call 261-2200, or email info@sevilleconcerts.com.

Fiesta Crawfish Festival 2013

By Emily Lullo

“Pinch the tail and suck the head.” This often repeated phrase can be heard at crawfish boils all over the south, and while most in Pensacola are likely already well versed in the ways of consuming this crustacean, it bears repeating to the many novices that will try it for their first time at the annual Fiesta of Five Flags Crawfish Festival at Bartram Park the weekend of May 3, 4 and 5. The Crawfish Festival, presented this year by Coastal Bank and Trust, has been bringing its blend of Cajun food, music and flair to Downtown Pensacola for the last 29 years, and has grown into one of the largest crawfish boils in the state. “Crawfish boils are a true southern pastime. They incorporate food, fellowship and fun, and all of those aspects can be found at Crawfish Festival,” says Fiesta marketing coordinator Bradley Davis Jr. “What better way to come together to enjoy the 16,000 pounds of crawfish we get directly from Louisiana?” The small lobster-like, freshwater crustaceans will be prepared in the traditional boil as well as many other ways such as in poboy sandwiches and crawfish pies, and they’ll be served alongside other Cajun fare like etouffee, jambalaya and boudin. Another popular draw of the fest is the live

entertainment, which offers bayou stylings and other music that will surely get attendees on their feet after enjoying some tasty fare. “We have a few acts coming straight from Jazz Fest in New Orleans to perform at the festival,” says Davis. “Some festival favorites include zydeco legends Rockin’ Doopsie Jr. and Wayne Toups as well as Revival, an Allman Brothers tribute band. We’re pretty excited to have them join us this year.” Saturday and Sunday will offer family-friendly activities in a children’s area sponsored by Cox with arts and crafts, as well as “NASCRAW” races, where kids can race speedy crustaceans for prizes. Think you can put away more crawfish than anyone you know? Go head to head with other amateur competitive eaters in a crawfish eating contest! Children and adults can sign up to compete for gastronomic glory on both Saturday and Sunday at the festival. In coordination with the fest, the Fiesta 5K and 10K Run/Walk is the perfect way to kick off Saturday. Fiesta has partnered with the Pensacola Runners

14 The DTC • May 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com

Association for the run. The 5K starts at 12th Avenue and Scott Street, while the 10K will begin at Pensacola State College. Both end in Seville Square and runners will get free admission to the fest following the race. Admission is $5 per day for adults, with free admission to children 12 and under. A weekend pass for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is available for $10, and those heading to the fest for lunch on Friday can get in free before 3 pm, and active duty military with ID are free on Friday. Prospective attendees are encouraged to keep an eye on the festival’s Facebook page (facebook.com/pensacolacrawfishfestival) for event announcements, contests and ticket giveaways. There’s a lot to experience at this festival between the savory seafood, live entertainment and beautiful waterfront setting, but for the truly Cajun hearts and stomachs, digging into some freshly boiled mudbugs tops the list. And, OK, if you’re too squeamish you don’t necessarily have to suck the head, but enjoying this seafood delicacy is definitely a must.

Art in the Park By Emily Lullo Art festivals and events are a true staple of Downtown Pensacola, where historic buildings, plazas and the bayfront provide the perfect backdrop for a day of viewing countless canvases and sculptures. This month, Seville Square will host the 11th annual Art in the Park, presented by the Pensacola Museum of Art. On both May 11 and 12 Art in the Park will be open from 10 am to 5 pm for guests to enjoy. This festival is a juried art show featuring only the best offerings of artists from around the world. “In this festival, we are highlighting traditional fine art mediums, and we require everything that is shown to be original, handmade and unique,” says PMA director of marketing Stacy Kendall. “It has also been vetted by the Art in the Park jury to ensure that the quality of the art is as high as possible. This year we have more than 75 artists—from local to national, and even as far as Charleroi, Belgium!” As with many art festivals the mediums will run the gamut from jewelry and photography to ceramics and painting and everything in between. Guests at Art in the Park can stroll under the oaks of Seville Square and chat with friendly artists who are on hand to talk about their work, many of whom return year after year because they love this festival so much. This year will also bring a new opportunity for attendees to actually bid on work they see in a

dedicated area for a silent auction. Winners will be announced at 4 pm on Sunday. “This is the first year that we are going to do a silent auction to raise money for children’s education,” Kendall says. “Artists are generously donating pieces of their artwork for people to bid on, which we think is another great way to showcase the wonderful work of our participating artists.”

22 The DTC • May 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com

In addition to viewing and bidding on artwork, families can bring kids and stop by a children’s tent to let the little ones work on some watercolor painting. Saturday will bring a live jazz band to the pavilion to add to the festive atmosphere. There will also be a raffle on Saturday at 4 pm, and the winner will get $500 to spend with artists at the festival. The weekend will provide a boon for Pensacola with the traveling artists as well as attendees who come from around the region to experience a fine arts festival in the historic Downtown. “As the Museum of Art in Pensacola, we feel that it is our duty to stand behind the artists that are actively creating, and we see Art in the Park as a way to bring together art patrons and potential art patrons with these artists,” Kendall says. “Art events are so important to the overall health and vitality of a city. We see beautiful Downtown Pensacola as something that is absolutely worth showing off to everyone.” On Sunday, close out the weekend with Art in the Park, the perfect post-brunch spot to wind down and see what talent is on display. “The festival is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon,” Kendall says. “Mother’s Day is on Sunday, so bring your moms and loved ones and just enjoy the sights and sounds in Seville Square Park.” For more information on Art in the Park visit pensacolamuseumofart.org.

Business Profile By Emily Lullo

Once Upon a Time Visitors to Downtown Pensacola may have noticed a renewed vigor in the northern corridor of Palafox Street, and last month brought a new addition to this growing area and the overall retail sector of Downtown. Once Upon a Time originally opened in July of 2012 on Barrancas Boulevard, but last month owner Vickie Dobard made the move to 270 N. Palafox. The expansive store is filled with furniture and home décor items, as well as jewelry, accessories and locally produced art. Once Upon a Time hosted its grand reopening last month during Gallery Night, and Dobard says she’s excited to be a part of the growing momentum in the area. “I see a lot more opportunity Downtown and I like being across from the [Palafox] Market,” Dobard says. Once Upon a Time even opens from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturdays so that Palafox Market shoppers can peruse the shop after paying a visit to their favorite produce and craft vendors in MLK Plaza. It is open seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm Monday-Friday, and noon to 5 pm on Sundays. In the open space and each of the 34 individual rooms, vendors have displayed their wares in inviting setups that shoppers can walk through and browse while envisioning the many pieces in their own

dwellings. The style of items varies greatly from room to room. “Everyone has their individual rooms where they can express their individuality,” Dobard says. “The décor and the furniture goes from antique to shabby-chic to more traditional and contemporary pieces. We also have artwork from various local artists displayed.” Everything in the store is in great condition, and people with their own used but well cared for furniture can also contact Once Upon a Time about possible consignment. Dobard has done design work for various companies in the past and says she feels it’s important to recycle furniture and items to reduce waste, which can certainly be done without sacrificing style. “With the economy being the way it is right now,

it just makes more sense for people to buy things that have been preloved or things that people have taken care of, and that way people can buy something that’s worth more for less,” she says. Entire dining room suites, bedroom suites, sofas, tables, and unique artwork can all be found in the many rooms of Once Upon a Time, and there’s something for everyone that walks in the door. “All our homes are our castles and it’s our personality that pulls them all together,” she says. “Our mission is to offer quality pre-owned furniture and home goods to transform your castle.” With the continuing growth of the bar and restaurant scene in the Palafox area, the addition of even more unique retailers gives visitors even more reason to stay in the area longer and an excuse to shop while walking off lunch. Stop by Once Upon a Time the next time you’re strolling Downtown, visiting the farmers market, or during Gallery Nights when the store will be open late for Gallery Night visitors. For more information find Once Upon a Time on Facebook or call the store 332.5265.

Film In which we unfairly judge coming attractions based solely on their trailers By Josh Newby

What I’ll be spending my $8 on: The Great Gatsby In theaters: May 10 Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher What I got from the preview: Based on the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald that is regularly referred to as “the great American novel,” this movie appears to take great artistic and theatrical liberties in telling the story of a World War I vet who lives next to the infamous Gatsby, a man who personifies the Roaring Twenties and all of its excess, and gets drawn into a web of crime and love. Most notable for: Although this novel has received the big screen treatment before, director Baz Luhrmann of Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet fame will bring his unique blend of theatricality and visual extravagance to the story. Also, Jay-Z is doing the soundtrack, so take from that what you will. Unqualified critical observation: Investing the $8 ($11) on this 3D spectacle is a risk on my part, since I hate 3D, but Luhrmann’s films are nothing if not entertaining, so the assault on my corneas will likely be worth the headache and increased admission price. Also, Moulin Rouge is one of my favorite movies ever, whereas Romeo + Juliet is one of my most loathed. What I’m saying is this will either be a fantastic movie or a fantastic disaster

Iron Man 3 In theaters: May 3 Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley What I got from the preview: Everyone’s favorite lovable egomaniac/misogynist/narcissist is back doing his superhero thing, but this time, there’s a villain intent on taking over the world! Wait, what? That was the first one? I mean, the second one? Aw, who cares? No one sees these things for the story anyway. Most notable for: Apparently, this time, the stakes are higher, since Disney sunk a lot of money into the Marvel universe. The stakes are slightly less overwhelming for our man Stark, since the suit definitely makes the man. Unqualified critical observation: Superhero movies are hit or miss with me, and for some reason these films have never quite struck my ever-evasive emotional core. That’s fine though, since any movie where RDJ (Robert Downey, Jr. for those whose wife doesn’t have his poster on their wall) plays himself is worth the price of admission to me. Star Trek: Into Darkness In theaters: May 17 Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto What I got from the preview: Incredibly seamless special effects? Check! A story of bravery, selflessness and destiny? Check! Epic, pop-philosophical dialogue delivered by a recognizable voice? Check! The fresh-faced crew of the Enterprise is back in an adventure that takes them to the edges of the universe (green screen) in an attempt to dismantle weapons of mass destruction. The crew assures everyone they don’t have faulty intelligence. Most notable for: Another entry in the growing list of reasons to love JJ Abrams, helm of the new Star Trek movies, the new Star Wars movies, and everything else I’ve ever adored in this cold, confusing world. Unqualified critical observation: The original packed enough generic punch to satisfy even the most jaded fan of intergalactic entertainment. With a franchise whose stories have problems and issues that resonate with our own culture, but which in this case are being handled by an otherworldly amount of supremely attractive people, JJ Abrams knows how to please the hardcore fan and the casual audience member alike. The movie’s cast list has also inspired me to name my firstborn son after Benedict Cumberbatch, the greatest name in all the world.

26 The DTC • May 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com

The Hangover, Part 3 In theaters: May 24 Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Melissa McCarthy, Zach Galifianakis What I got from the preview: Apparently Alan, Galifianakis’s character, has been, like, certifiably insane this whole time. I must’ve missed that character development somewhere in the layers of his nuanced, Oscar-caliber acting. In order to help him confront his issues—and to help him deal with the death of his father—the Wolfpack takes him on a road trip where they will be assaulted, kidnapped and forced to spend time on sets from the first movie. Unconventional therapy at its best. Most notable for: This is the epic conclusion of Todd Phillips’ boundary-pushing magnum opus, which is not as good as most magnum opus-es, but is just opus-y enough to warrant the designation. Unqualified critical observation: To be honest, I didn’t see the second one, for reasons I really don’t want to go into right now. The first one was really funny though! This unqualified observation is more unqualified than most, but I’m gonna say this will be better than the second, but not as good as the first. The Purge In theaters: May 31 Starring: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey What I got from the preview: For one night a year, all crime, even showing up late to your in-laws’ dinner party, is legal. You see, unemployment is at an all-time low and everyone has finally become okay with the Affordable Care Act to the point where they pretty much forgot what the big deal was, anyway. This is because, for 12 hours a year, they are allowed to purge all their illicit tendencies without fear of retribution. The film focuses on one family who take extreme precautions to safely survive the night, but their stronghold of a home is compromised and instead they have to endure a night of terror. Most notable for: It’s a really good idea. It would never work in the real world, but for a horror movie, this is a great idea, hopefully well executed by the team behind Saw and last year’s very scary Sinister. Unqualified critical observation: This movie feels like Panic Room with a much more terrifying premise. Things that go bump in the night and lone holdouts faced with overwhelming odds are both staples of the genre, and I predict that this movie will combine them in a very satisfying, unsettling manner.

MY CROWD

Inaugural Cinco de Mayo Festival By Emily Lullo May brings with it warming weather and the start of a busy festival season for Downtown Pensacola. This year there’s a new event coming to Palafox Street: the inaugural Cinco de Mayo Festival. The colorful fest will feature music, food, and decor that will mimic a bustling streetscape in Mexico. While many think of May 5 as a Mexican version of Independence Day, this is not actually the case. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is known as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla, or the Battle of Puebla Day. It is mostly recognized in the state of Puebla, celebrating the 1862 battle there where the Mexican army defeated the much larger and better equipped French forces, providing an inspirational moment for the country during a time of war. While many Americans will celebrate any excuse to sip a refreshing margarita, festival organizer Grace Resendez McCaffery says this year the date will serve as an opportunity to share Mexican heritage and culture with the community, as well as honoring the resilience of this area in the face of adversity. “The way I look at it and why I want to do it here is when you look at the significance of the observance itself, you have a small, poorly equipped group of people that fought off the professional French Army and defeated them all in the name of defending their community,” she says. “That’s the way I see Pensacola when we’ve had disasters here.” The Cinco de Mayo Festival will kick off at noon on Palafox from Garden to Government Street, which will be closed to traffic during the event. The

streets will come alive with live music in various styles that are popular in Mexico, including mariachis, a Norteño (northern) style group, as well as a trival or tribal group, which Resendez McCaffery says she is very excited to see. “It’s kind of a new genre of music that’s come out of Mexico that the young people there really enjoy. It comes with an entire culture of clothing and a dance, and they’re mostly cowboy hats and exaggerated boots,” she says. There will also be dancers featured at the event. Each region of Mexico has its own unique dance, and one group will perform seven of these dances. Another performer, John Jaramillo, will display traditional Aztec dances and teach audiences about that aspect of Mexican culture. Charros, which are similar to cowboys, will also perform with lassos and dancing. Attendees can come hungry, because along with a bevy of restaurants along Palafox and throughout Downtown, food vendors will be available with traditional Mexican treats and foods that are typical of Mexican festivals. Try something new like elote, a traditional Mexican festival snack that’s a version of flavored corn on the cob. There will be snacks, drinks, desserts and full meals available from food vendors. Kids can enjoy bounce houses, arts and crafts, and soccer exercises, and local soccer team the Gulf Coast Texans will be on hand in advance of a

summer tournament against the champion team from Monterrey, Mexico this June. Attendees can also peruse the work of vendors selling crafts at the festival. The event will end with a fireworks show over Palafox around 7:30 pm. Utilizing the historic architecture of Palafox and adding the sights and sounds of Mexico will transform Downtown Pensacola into the perfect setting for Cinco de Mayo, Resendez McCaffery says. “I want people to feel like they’re in another place, like they’ve taken a vacation and gone to Mexico for a few hours,” she says. “This is something that we want everyone to come and experience because whenever we do something like this it’s always about sharing our traditions.” For more information call 494-7899 or visit latinomediane.com.

Open Air Dining Gets a New Name New to the brick sidewalks and incomparable culture and history of Downtown Pensacola is a dining destination on Palafox that offers a simultaneously casual and classy scene for Pensacolian foodies. That destination is Al Fresco, and its multiple restaurants, sleek AirStream food trucks and outdoor seating is Pensacola’s freshest answer to the age-old question, “What do you want to eat?” At the corner of Palafox and Main streets, Al Fresco’s contemporary concept capitalizes on the ease and access of food trucks and combines them with Downtown’s eternally relaxing and fun aura for a stylish approach to outdoor dining like no other. The restaurant area will be home to four food trucks, each with a little something different to offer. The trucks will offer hungry residents and tourists the option to quickly order and then sit down in the communal, outdoor dining area, or take their food to go as they walk the city. Z Taco, the first truck to open, offers authentic Mexican food. Gouda Stuff is a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich shop. Opening in May, Shotgun BBQ and Green House will offer classic American barbecue options and healthy, fruit and vegetable-based meals, respectively. The expansive menu of options offered at each of these vastly different restaurants makes it ideal for office lunches and family dinners. Even the pickiest eater is bound to find their new favorite meal. Jerry’s Cajun Café, the only restaurant housed in an actual building, is already open and offers the

signature pepper- and season-infused New Orleansstyle po-boys, gumbo and boudin that many residents of Pensacola came to know and love when the location was on Ninth Avenue for almost 20 years. Early in 2012, it was announced that the Ninth

Avenue location would be closing, much to the chagrin of regulars who came to rely on Jerry Mistretta’s Louisiana-inspired menu. Not long after, however, the idea for Al Fresco began circulating and Jerry was approached with the idea to let his signature taste serve as the anchor for the new open-air dining junction. “I can hardly describe the revitalization and excitement I feel being Downtown,” said Mistretta. “Closing down in 2012 for a variety of reasons was

very difficult, but being approached with this new opportunity is such a blessing. The business people and residents Downtown have supported us so much, even for the few short weeks we’ve already been open.” In the nine months between the Ninth Avenue’s location’s closing and the Downtown location’s opening, Mistretta admitted he had a great many offers, but none of them felt quite right. “When I was approached with the idea for Al Fresco, it just made such sense,” said Mistretta. “It’s a very unique concept and perfectly fitted for Downtown life and tourism.” The sky is the limit for this new leisurely dining concept, according to Mistretta, and the locals who are flooding the street corner location seem to agree. The location of Al Fresco is situated perfectly for every type of Downtown tourist: the casual shopper, the sports fanatic, the beach-lover, and the culture aficionado. Visitors can sip a cold beer and enjoy a scrumptious meal on a sunny Saturday before a Blue Wahoos game—or enjoy a glass of wine and light meal on a warm, breezy night. The distant sounds of waves at the bay and the gentle humming of traffic are the perfect lunch and dinner companions at this ideal dining destination, nestled among an ever-evolving Downtown Pensacola. Al Fresco’s restaurants are open from 10:30 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday.
