CONTENTS 4. Downtown Improvement Board

I’ve been out of school for more years than I’d like to Emily Lullo admit, but there are still plenty of opportunities to nerd out editor in my life, and somehow what used to be the summer vacation between semesters has become the more learned time of the year for me. It could be that the unrelenting heat drives me indoors to pleasantly air-conditioned rooms to curl up with a novel, or that a late summer vacation is encouraging me to brush up on my currently abysmal Spanish skills, but somehow my brain gets a little more exercise during the hotter months. Early this year I joined a book club and I’ve realized very little makes me happier than chatting with our little group over beers at our monthly meetings. I always feel a little smarter after discussing in depth the themes and symbolism in the stories (except when the couple UWF English department wonks start going off about ‘postmodernism’; no one knows what you’re talking about!). Last month, I joined a fellow book club member to get library cards. I had one as a child, but my membership had lapsed—only by a decade, the friendly guy at the front desk assured me! I was awed by the sunny atrium that now invites guests into the recently renovated Downtown branch. You too can get reacquainted with one of Downtown’s greatest resources. Check out more on the library and its summer programs on page 22! If history is your bag, you don’t necessarily need to hit the books for a summer lesson. Just climb aboard a bus, bike or even a Segway for a historic tour in the Downtown area! There’s plenty to see and explore in America’s first European settlement, and we’ve got your guide to historic tours ranging from a leisurely glide to a ghostly adventure! See our guide on page 17. Also in this issue, we’ve got the winner of our Second Annual DTC Cover Contest! We’re always looking for ways to encourage interaction with our readers and we also love supporting our bustling arts community. With our annual Cover Contest, we get to do both! Once again this year we went through our entries and made the difficult decision of which one would get a place on our June DTC cover. Meet the artist behind the design on page 13!

Downtown Pensacola: An Outsider’s View It’s very interesting to experience Downtown Pensacola from a bit of an outsider’s perspective. I have been living in Pensacola now for about six weeks and I am continually discovering great things about the Downtown. Right away I noticed the colonial French architectural influences on many of the old buildings. I notice the brick sidewalks on Palafox and the majestic trees in the many parks, but more than all of that I notice the people. There are people all over Downtown, out

and about, walking, running or sitting at sidewalk tables for coffee, lunch or dinner. The people are what make a Downtown thrive and Pensacola is doing something right because there are many people engaged with each other and enjoying Downtown. A vibrant Downtown has variety; a variety of people, a variety of events, a variety of buildings, places to see and many things to do. I love walking down Palafox and seeing all the many different restaurants, shops,

4 The DTC • JUNE 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com

galleries, museums, the variety of structures and the people using them. I love to venture out a block or two in either direction to find yet more treasures: parks, cafes, properties that have been restored for office space, etc. It is a veritable feast for the senses. The fact that businesses are thriving in a broader area than just Palafox is a very positive sign for the future of Downtown Pensacola. It opens the door to both the generally more traditional stores and restaurants while providing the opportunity for more “offbeat” merchants to do business in the surrounding areas. I am quite impressed with how many activities there are available in Downtown Pensacola. The number of events as well as the number of people that come down and support the events is remarkable, especially when you consider that they are made up of

both locals and first-time Downtown visitors and returning guests. There are 5Ks, 10Ks charity runs, Wahoo games, Gallery Nights, Cinco de Mayo, and the weekly rain or shine Palafox Farmer’s Market, just to name a few. Again, this is a very healthy sign for Downtown Pensacola. Downtown Pensacola is a regional asset and in many ways it is “everyone’s backyard.” We can all claim ownership of Downtown Pensacola and be proud of the rich blend of eclectic sites and activities that are a draw to such a wide variety of people. I look forward to meeting more people on the street, to seeing what is around the next corner and being a part of Downtown Pensacola’s future.

Angel’s Garden Bolsters Local Art Community By Emily Lullo

Pensacola’s art community is a continually growing asset to the Downtown area and the entire city. With the huge and varied array of artists and styles, Debbie Tracy saw the expansive offerings and wanted to have her own place to display and sell the works, as well as have a platform for those artists to gain exposure and help the community. That’s why in 1993 she started her business Angel’s Garden, a shop filled with art, gifts, books, jewelry, and much more. “Ever since I was in high school I wanted to have a gift shop—just a place where people could go where they could buy things from one dollar to $750, but a place where everybody could shop.” Angel’s Garden started in a Victorian house at A Street and Government and is now in a house in the historic East Hill neighborhood at 1208 N. 12th Avenue where it’s been for the last decade. The unique items in Angel’s Garden are spread through five rooms, and feature everything from an assortment of handmade, one-of-a-kind angels to locally produced cards, photograph prints, wind chimes and home items. One room is dedicated to Pensacola-centric items like colorful glass bottles holding some white beach sand to cards and ornaments that feature local landmarks that can be

personalized on the spot for gifts or souvenirs. “It just keeps growing,” Tracy says of the selection. “We have about 100 local artists in the store. Some may have just a few things, while others may have a large quantity.” The shop also stocks an array of books, locally produced all natural body oils, scrubs and soaps, and a selection of coffee and tea. Those with children can even let them sit and draw in a dedicated children’s room while they browse the store. If you haven’t been to the shop in a while, this month Angel’s Garden will be hosting a Grand Reopening celebration on Wednesday June 12 from 10:30 am until 6 pm. It’s the perfect opportunity to stop in and see what’s new at the shop, talk to some of the local artists whose work is featured there, enjoy some refreshments and maybe pick up a little something to add to your home décor or jewelry box. “We felt this was the year to start fresh and we’re going to continue to evolve and reinvent the store,” Tracy says. The other thing Tracy had in mind before even starting the store was holding an art show, which she’s done for the last 17 years.

“I wanted to do something to help domestic violence victims, and so after a year or two of being in business I started the art show in my yard at Government and A with proceeds going to Favor House. We started with nine artists,” Tracy says. “Now it has grown to include local musicians, a whole area for children to play, food vendors and all in all I would say there’s about 125 booths.” Proceeds from the show still benefit Favor House, and ARC Gateway is also involved. Tracy and Angel’s Garden have also been big supporters of Relay for Life for the last 13 years and lending help to the greater community and organizations that are in need is something she has been passionate about throughout her career. Look out for the next edition of the Angel’s Garden Art Show at the park at 12th and Gonzalez in 2014. To stay updated on what’s going on at Angel’s Garden, visit the Facebook page at facebook.com/AngelsGarden, or stop by the shop to check out the whimsical array of unique gifts. The public is also invited to see what’s new at the Grand Reopening celebration all day at Angel’s Garden on June 12.

A Peek Into The Past: Pensacola Historic Tours By Josh Newby

Pensacola serves as the home to a championship-winning hockey team, a culture-infused Downtown, and the cradle of naval aviation, but its storied past paints a far more transformative and sometimes violent picture than many may realize. For example, our Downtown’s infrastructure was almost destroyed by secessionism during the Civil War, and Pensacola’s beaches served as the front line for the largest battle ever waged in Florida. There are many city tour companies in Pensacola that are chock-full of fascinating tidbits and obscure trivia, available to history-junkies, curious citizens and cultural heritage tourists. Each of these touring companies provides a little something different to visitors, from kid-friendly and guided tours, to more independent, autonomous adventures. One of these touring companies is Go Retro, which offers a variety of historic tours that are both entertaining and educational. Besides just taking people to local places where history was literally made, the company uses audio and video technology equipped within a vehicle to help tell the stories behind the events. Go Retro adds new tours every month to keep things as fresh and interesting as

the history they bring to life. “In June, the company will offer ‘Landmarks’ and ‘Longest Siege’ tours,” said Wesley Odom, an award-winning author who works with the company. “Pensacola native Dr. Bill Spain tells the stories behind some of the area’s most unique landmarks; this tour redefines the way we look at the town. ‘Longest Siege’ is the story of Pensacola during the American Revolution. I show people how, where and why this important battle took place.” Odom said the tours are so realistic, with a strict adherence to facts, that participants can almost smell the gunpowder drifting through the centuries. Children’s tours are in the future for Go Retro, as they seek to expand their target audience and engage kids in the truths about their surroundings. Current prices range from $16 to $18, with half prices for youths and no cost for children under 5. Tours are scheduled daily, Tuesday through Saturday. Reservations are requested. Requests may be made in advance for specific tours or special event transportation. Emerald Coast Tours offers participants a unique way to explore all that

historic Pensacola has to offer with its Segway and bike options available to anyone looking for a different way to explore America’s first settlement. This unique blend of history and fun is presented in one- and two-hour hour formats for Segway-riders and a one-, two- and three-hour version for bicyclists. Plus, because of the sheer amount of history Pensacola has to offer, many tours will differ each time, giving culture aficionados a variety that many other companies do not offer. “Every Emerald Coast Tours guide makes sure to cover the basics, such as the founding of Pensacola, the City of Five Flags, Andrew Jackson and the transfer of Florida to the Americans from the Spanish, a stop at the L&N Train Depot, and Admiral Mason Park,” said Nic Schuck, owner of Emerald Coast Tours. “However, other interesting stops and stories may include, but are not limited to, the history of baseball in Pensacola; AfricanAmerican history at the Belmont-Develliers intersection, the lumber, fishing and brick-producing industries; the Civil War; Bernardo de Galvez and the Siege of Pensacola and much more. Some tours may even venture into North Hill, Longhollow, East Hill and Old East Hill.” With so many sites to see, it is clear why a speedy trek on Segway or bicycle is the most efficient way to take it all in, but for those who prefer a more leisurely pace, Emerald Coast Tours also offers a Historical Walking Pub Tour, with a few stops at some quintessentially Pensacolan bars along the way. The stories of Downtown Pensacola and the histories of several bars are discussed nightly at 6:30 pm. Reservations are recommended for all tours, and prices range between $45 and $65 for Segway tours, and $25 to $45 for bike tours. The Historic Walking Pub Tour is $15. The Pensacola Historic Village, an area of Downtown that has preserved houses, museums, parks and churches from a time long ago, is another popular destination for those looking to learn more about our area and how life was lived in the earlier days of our country’s history. A public tour is offered Tuesday through Saturday at 11 am, 1 and 2:30 pm. This tour takes visitors through an 1805 Creole Cottage, 1871 Victorian Home, 1832 Church, and finishes up with another Victorian Home from 1890. Beyond just allowing participants to interact with these historical landmarks, the Historic Village tours strive to immerse guests

even further in the experience by providing costumed guides who interpret more than 450 years of Colonial and Victorian life. Sheyna Marcey, the director of education for West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc. (WFHPI), said that there is something all ages are sure to enjoy at each point along the tour. “Our public tour features an introduction to the City of Five Flags, and chronologically covers Pensacola History throughout our tour houses,” said Marcey. The Village caters to a wide range of demographics throughout the year, with competitive prices as well. “Our Public Guided tour is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens 65 years and older, AAA members and active military, $3 for children 416, and children under the age of 4 are free,” said Marcey. “The Pensacola Children’s Museum has admission of $3 per person.” Other facilities managed by WFHPI include the T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Museum, which interprets Northwest Florida History and is free of admission, and the Pensacola Children’s Museum, which is a hands-on learning experience Pensacola Lighthouse for children of all ages and offers special programs just for kids. If those tours happen to offer enough history and culture to whet your appetite for something beyond the immediate Downtown area, the Pensacola Lighthouse and Museum is waiting and willing to offer up lots of fun, adventure, and even some chilling thrills. The Pensacola Lighthouse, located on NAS Pensacola, was first built in 1859 and saw many wars and developments over the following decades.

Today, the lighthouse offers many educational adventures, one of which is the Light of the Moon tour, a nighttime exploration of the Pensacola Lighthouse. Staff members guide volunteers through the historic 1869 Keepers’ Quarter, sharing historic tales of ghostly encounters, as well as some more recent paranormal stories. The tour also includes a climb up the 177 cast iron steps of the tower, where visitors will experience breathtaking moonlit views of the Gulf of Mexico, three forts, Navy Yard and Pensacola Bay. Another tour offered at the lighthouse is the Ghost Hunt tour, which sheds light on the more paranormal aspects of the landmark’s past. As is widely known in the area, the lighthouse may or may not be haunted. The Travel Channel and SciFi’s Ghost Hunters have each run exposés on the phenomena, and guests are welcomed to use professional ghost-hunting equipment to discover the truth for themselves. This tour also includes a journey up the tower for a view of the surrounding area. Daily admission to the lighthouse is $6 for adults and $4 for active duty military, seniors 65 and older, and children 12 and under. It is open 10 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 5:30 pm on Sunday. Reservations are required for both nighttime tours and can be accessed on the Pensacola Lighthouse website. So the next time you feel that Pensacola’s charms have grown old, or that our culture’s history is not quite controversial or exciting enough, remember that there are numerous tours and immeasurable amounts of fun to be had, reveling in Pensacola’s storied past.

Summer Reading at the Downtown Library By Emily Lullo During the summertime, children and adults alike have the perfect excuse to dig into a few great books. Whether it’s the lack of a daily school schedule or just the extra hours of sunshine to recline in the sun with a good read, anyone can start chipping away at those summer reading lists this month. Downtown Pensacola has the perfect resource to do just that in its very own library. January of this year marked the beginning of a new chapter for the West Florida Library’s main branch at 239 N. Spring Street, and if you haven’t yet explored the newly renovated space, now is the perfect time. Prior to its facelift and expansion, the facility was in dire need of repair and had outgrown its 26,000 square feet of space. Townes + Architects took on the job of restoring the original space and adding an additional 25,000 square feet and almost doubling the space. The result is a beautiful and inviting space that speaks to its historic Downtown surroundings while being a state of the art library. It’s even the City of Pensacola’s first LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building, with many energyefficient features like a tankless gas water heater and low-flow plumbing fixtures. The main library as well as other WFPL locations, also have a host of programs for children and adults to take advantage of during the summer months. For preschoolers, a weekly story time is held at the main library each Wednesday at 10:30 am. On Mondays at noon, the summer Dig Into Reading program takes place, with a wide variety of activities and guests and the mission to get kids reading for 15 minutes a day. The special Dig Into Reading program includes story times with interesting guests, crafts and other activities. Kids will get the chance to meet animals like snakes, tarantulas, and possibly an alligator with Reno’s Reptiles. A magician, a gymnastics instructor and professional story teller Kaye Barnes are also on the lineup at the various locations for the special program. One thing that’s really special that’s happening this summer is we will be one of the final presentations of Red String Wayang Shadow Puppetry, as they’re retiring at the end of the year,” says WFPL youth services coordinator Rachel Wallace. The Red String Wayang Theatre is an acclaimed Mississippi-based shadow puppetry theatre that will be visiting the library. Another exciting guest will be Charlie Williams and his Sound Safari Theatre. The talented vocalist is known as “the noise guy” and is the star of Touch Tone Tales. The summer programs are an important component to the mission of the library and their outreach to individual children and their families, Wallace says. Camps and other groups are also invited to attend, but are encouraged to call ahead to schedule story times so that they can be best accommodated. “In the summertime, the library just wants to step in and remind kids to just have fun reading all summer long,” Wallace says. To support the library, patrons are invited to join the Friends of the West Florida Public Library to help bolster the mission of the WFPL. If you just want to get a library card, just bring an ID and proof that you live in Escambia County (like a bill or vehicle registration) to the library and fill out the application.

Wisteria Tavern By Emily Lullo

For many, the Wisteria Tavern is a perennial beer bar mainstay. With its unpretentious atmosphere, quirky charm and fabled history, being at “the Wiz,” as it’s commonly known, is like having a drink in your good friend’s basement. However, your friend’s basement likely isn’t the oldest continually running bar in Pensacola and probably doesn’t have more than 100 beers to choose from. Nestled in the middle of 12th Avenue’s picturesque tunnel of oaks, the Wisteria might seem out of place in its residential surroundings. But in the scope of history, the neighborhood is actually out of place; it sprouted up around the bar long after it first got its beer license in 1935. Before that, the spot spent a decade as a grocery, quickly becoming a spot for fishermen and hunters to gather for a drink after a day out in the wild when the beer started flowing. The pub remains in its location at 3808 N. 12th Avenue because it was grandfathered in when zoning laws changed and a residential neighborhood was planned in that area. “It’s definitely a true neighborhood bar,” says owner Terry Abbott. “It’s very casual. It’s a little different, to say the least.

With its old fashioned neon signs inviting guests to the neighborhood bar, the Wisteria has been featured in Garden & Gun in its “Top 50 Bars in the South” feature as well as in a “Secret South” article. Abbott is starting his tenth year as owner of the Wisteria this month, the fourth owner of the historic spot. The Wisteria boasts more than 100 beer options and 18 of those are on tap. The selection is heavy on craft brews, but you can always get the basic domestics as well. Taps rotate off to offer new or seasonal flavors and the bar also serves wine. The Wiz is also known for hosting different events, like parties for various Mardi Gras Krewes or bike show nights, along with more beer-centric affairs with representatives from different beer breweries. “We have pint nights where different breweries come in and if you buy a beer you get a free glass with their logo on it,” Abbott says. You can stay up to date on upcoming events at the Wisteria Tavern Facebook page or website. For the summer, watch out for an upcoming fish fry, the perfect summer accompaniment to a cold brew.

Over the course of the time Abbott has been in charge, the Wisteria has made a few small changes that keep it updated while maintaining its roots. A big transition for the bar was going non-smoking two years ago, and the clear air has greatly improved the atmosphere. “We are nonsmoking now,” says Abbott. “The big thing at one time was how smoky it was in the bar, so that was a big change.” Other changes have been aesthetic, like new flooring and beer coolers, and tearing out the ceiling to expose the wooden rafters and giving the bar a roomier feel. But much like a good brew, the Wisteria is a classic, maintaining its quirky charm (looking at you, outdoor bathrooms) and long history while adapting to the tastes of its varied group of denizens. “You never know who you’re going to see in there,” says Abbott. “I have probably the most diverse crowd you could find in this town.” Come to the Wisteria Tavern to grab a brew and see who’s in the neighborhood hotspot tonight!

Film In which we unfairly judge coming attractions based solely on their trailers By Josh Newby

What I’ll be spending my $8 on: Man of Steel In theaters: June 14 Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner What I got from the preview: A young journalist, Clark Kent, struggles with revealing his true identity to a world that needs him, but may reject him. This supposedly grittier take on the Son of Krytpon features the same ole story we’ve all come to know and possibly love, but this time, without the trademark red underwear! Most notable for: God of the nerds Christopher Nolan, who directed the Dark Knight trilogy, and Zack Snyder of 300 fame team up to hopefully deliver a movie worthy of its source material. Unqualified critical observation: Summer superhero fatigue happens, and literally every movie coming out this summer looks incredible, but I beg you to put all that aside—and to forget 2006’s Superman Returns ever happened—and shell out the dolla dolla bills for a tale of destiny and bravery helmed by two expert craftsmen. When I first heard there was going to be another Superman movie, I cried foul over Hollywood’s affinity for reboots, but after seeing the trailer, I am fully onboard with Nolan’s dark vision for the original superhero.

This Is The End In theaters: June 12 Starring: James Franco, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera What I got from the preview: A house party, attended by the funniest cast in recent history, all playing themselves, is interrupted by the poorly timed apocalypse. The team of friends has to stick together using their own inexhaustible wit and survive despite their patchy facial hair. Most notable for: Packing each member of the new generation of funnymen (and women) into one film, held together by a plot they wrote. The cast is too big to list above, and each represents the new wave of awkward, selfaware humor that has been invading movie screens since The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Unqualified critical observation: This movie will be funny. Maybe even touching. Franco and team have a way of blending frat humor with quiet moments that speak on human conditions of loneliness, intimacy and friendship. Plus, any movie that apparently features Emma Watson as an ax-wielding psychopath and Rihanna slapping Michael Cera is the perfect form of entertainment to make it through the end of the world. The Bling Ring In theaters: June 14 Starring: Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Katie Chang What I got from the preview: Proving that the truth is stranger than fiction, this movie tells the factual tale of a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who robbed celebrities’ houses in Hollywood. Most notable for: Giving life to a true story that seemed made for the silver screen while it was unfolding. I remember hearing about the 2008-09 burglaries and thinking that this is the stuff of shallow, entertaining heist films. Unqualified critical observation: I’ll undoubtedly see this movie in order to witness the headline-grabbing story brought to life by the incomparable director of… Let’s be real, I’m seeing this to watch Emma Watson as she continues mastering the complexity of the American accent while breaking free of her Hermione typecast, looking incredible and winning my heart again in the process.

26 The DTC • JUNE 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com

World War Z In theaters: June 21 Starring: Brad Pitt, Matthew Fox What I got from the preview: Zombies are attacking! The entire globe! A United Nations employee is the only one who can stop it! He happens to also be 1995’s AND 2000’s Sexiest Man Alive! (Seriously, twice?) Can this international diplomat save the people and governments of the world from certain destruction and an over-inundation of undead entertainment? Most notable for: To its credit, this film does promise to take a more political and socio-economic look at the consequences and handling of a zombie invasion, rather than adopting a pure horror-movie formula. It also seems to have better production values than your typical shoot-emup zombie flick. Unqualified critical observation: Zombies are infecting our culture the way vampires did a few years back. It could be because of this market saturation, or because of that awful third season of The Walking Dead, but I just can’t get myself excited for this one. Monsters University In theaters: June 21 Starring: John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Nathan Fillion, John Krasinski, Steve Buscemi What I got from the preview: Everyone’s favorite lovable monsters, Mike and Sulley, are back! This time, we get a peek into the past as the good folks at Pixar show us how they became the pride and joy of Monstropolis. Apparently, they didn’t always get along, and had to overcome their differences to become the very best of friends. Adorable! Most notable for: This movie is the sequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc. and will be the latest in Pixar’s long list of successes. Pixar has a unique legacy as the most criticallyacclaimed film studio of all time, and for good reason: their movies have a heart and humor that reaches children and adults differently yet equally. Unqualified critical observation: Pixar sequels are generally even better than their predecessors (Toy Story 2 & 3), but one rotten attempt (Cars 2) sticks out like a sore thumb and often sends me into a spiraling, Larry the Cable Guyinduced depression. Let’s hope this latest movie is more like the former than the latter and doesn’t end up casting a computer-generated shadow over one of the best moviegoing experiences of my childhood. (I was 13 in 2001 with the heart of a 12-year-old).

The lineup from the show includes popular dancers Tony Dovolani, Karina Smirnoff, Tristan MacManus and more. Pensacola’s own local celebrities are also taking the stage, and after months of practice will be performing alongside the stars. “Each year our guests are blown away by our local celebrities. Business Profile

Kaboom Sports & Social Club By Emily Lullo

If you’re looking to get involved in a recreational sport, meet new people or just experience some unique summer fun, Kaboom Sports & Social Club has brought exactly what you’re looking for to Pensacola. Offering kickball and cornhole leagues to local players, the company started this year with the goal of bringing people together for fun, games and events, and owner Krissy GreenleafRobertson says her efforts have so far proven very successful. After moving with husband Mark Robertson to San Diego in 2006, Greenleaf-Robertson joined a coed kickball league to meet new friends. When the pair came back to Pensacola in 2012, she put her marketing and advertising background to work to start Kaboom. Sports and social clubs are popular in many larger cities, and Greenleaf-Robertson says Kaboom has had a warm reception among local participants. “We’ve had a lot of people that are just really excited that there’s an option like this in Pensacola,” she says. “This is not an overly competitive league; our goal

first and foremost is for people to have fun and meet each other and have a good time.” Currently, Kaboom organizes a weekly cornhole league at HelenBack, and a kickball league at Lyons Park. Anyone over the age of 21 can register to play in the leagues. For those that aren’t familiar, cornhole is a game similar to horseshoes, with players tossing beanbags at a platform with holes in it from 27 feet away. Points are awarded for bags that land on the platform or in the hole. In addition to the league, cornhole enthusiasts can get involved at the Gulf Coast Cornhole Series, a tournament with six qualifying tournaments that are held along the Gulf Coast between April and September, culminating in a final competition for $1,000 in cash and prizes. For the kickball league, Kaboom does the work of setting up the teams after you register for the league. The next kickball league will be from July 10 to August 28 and cost $42.40, which includes seven refereed games plus a final tournament for the top teams, as well as team shirts.

32 The DTC • JUNE 2013 • www.downtowncrowd.com

Players can join as an entire team or there are several options for anyone who wants to join. “You can join as an individual, so if you don’t know anyone in Pensacola and just want an automatic group of people to hang out with once a week, you can join individually,” she says. “Or you can join as a small group so if you and three friends wanted to be on the same team, I’d put you on the same team and take other small groups of individuals to create your team.” There are also options for those who can’t commit to playing every week, who can sign up as substitute players in bronze, silver or gold levels. Bronze players can pay $5 per game to sub in; silver players get a shirt and ten subbing positions as well as discounts on future league opportunities; and gold players get unlimited subbing, a shirt and future discounts as well. Kaboom is also excited to partner with various local establishments for leagues as well as other events like themed pub crawls. Hopjacks Filling Station hosts post-game happy hours for kickball

leagues, and Helen Back hosts the cornhole league. For pub crawl events, Kaboom partners with other Downtown spots like Play, Pensacola Bay Brewery, Hub Stacey’s, Hopjacks and Tin Cow. Recent crawls have included a Time to Party Gras Mardi Gras crawl and also a Cinco de Mayo themed event. Look out for similar crawls in the future like an upcoming Christmas in July Pub Crawl. Kaboom offers the chance for locals to “unleash your inner sixth grader,” and have fun while getting to know other fun league members. As the budding company grows, league options will expand to offer new sports and more events. “We can’t grow without involvement so our focus right now is growing and trying to get people involved as much as possible,” says Greenleaf-Robertson. If you’d like to check it out, stop by a game or post-game happy hour, and stay updated on what’s going on with Kaboom or join a league at kaboomssc.com or facebook.com/kaboomssc.
