Editor’s Note Fall in Northwest Florida means many things—a slight reprieve from the staggering summer heat (eventually), the Pensacola Seafood Festival, the Pensacola Greek Festival, the Interstate Fair, Foo Foo Festival, Barktoberfest, Beaches to Woodlands, Songwriters Festivals and so many more of your favorite local events. Fall is a great time to enjoy all our area has to offer and we’ve got everything you need to know about the best fall events in this issue of Pensacola Magazine. We hope to see you out at many of them. Two of the October events are fundraisers for extremely worthy causes and I encourage you to attend and/or donate to these valuable community resources. On October 26, FavorHouse of Northwest Florida will host a benefit featuring two American Idol finalists and lots of inspiring stories, silent auctions and more. The event will benefit the FavorHouse Shelter programs, which provide shelter and help for women and children leaving abusive relationships. Another local non-profit seeks to raise money, awareness and adoption rates for local animals in search of their forever homes. The Humane Society of Pensacola does so many wonderful things for these animals in need

and they deserve as much community support as we can give them, so be sure to head over to Barktoberfest on October 27 at the Community Maritime Park. On the cover this month we’ve featured a pretty spectacular home. loves to cook and now we gladly host the entire mob for dinner at our home. The lesson here is that at some point we let our children take over. This is when we really learn what they are all about and what they consider worthy of passing on.

I take a lot of ribbing when my autumn tree is up and decorated by labor day. I love seasonal decorations and like to have plenty of time to enjoy them. It seems that once school starts and football season kicks off, the days almost become a blur. Christmas is right around the corner.

Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays… How true it is, except what exactly is “home?” Norman Rockwell would probably paint it with parents piling their children and pets into station wagons as they prepared to drive for hours to get back to their own roots with mom and dad. Snow would be a requirement as well as plenty of homemade treats, familiar albums of Christmas music playing on the stereo and a tree covered with ornaments from childhood. Mom would probably be wearing an apron when everyone arrived and Dad would most likely be in a recliner by the fire watching football. I do remember those days but, my, how things have changed. Becoming a grown-up means taking everything life has dished out and making the very most of every precious second. No one plans on divorce, death or yearround baseball and cheerleading, but all of these things have a way of redefining time-honored tradition. When my children were very small, we always made the annual holiday trek to north Alabama where my parents lived. I come from a large family and for the longest time, all of us miraculously were able to be together for a period of time during the holidays. It was great fun being in a crowded noisy house, passing on sacred family traditions to our own kids. My mother still hangs the same tacky, priceless pieces we made in grammar school on the tree. To this day, none of us claim the ugly angel that topped the evergreen for years and was retired only 10 Pensacola Magazine

when one wing came loose. She now has her own tissue-lined box and is available for display only. Semi-gone, but never forgotten. Many years ago I opted for a more designer type tree, but I always put up a smaller one that shows off all the treasures my children so proudly brought home from school. My son’s toilet paper roll nutcracker soldier holds a permanent spot among the glittering decorations. Money can’t buy something like that. Mom also instilled in us the importance of a home cooked Christmas dinner; regardless of what day we dined. Since Christmas day conflicts such as sharing the kids with an ex or time required at the hunting camp create challenging schedules, we are rarely together anymore on the big day. We do, however, try to have the family feast on Dec. 23 before everyone scatters. This change was hardest on my youngest brother who still believes there is no excuse for anything short of a total re-creation of our youth. But to manage the stress level that seems to surface in December, concessions had to be made. Additionally, I have to admit that one year I took my children to a nice restaurant for the holiday dinner and if it weren’t for the guilt I feel when looking into my mother’s eyes, I would not mind that becoming a new tradition. Unfortunately, while my kids are thoroughly modern and appreciated that one unique outing, they are old fashioned enough to want green bean casserole and sweet potatoes with praline topping. Mercifully, I have a husband who

To this day, when my grown daughter comes in for the holidays, she likes to nap by the fire under her baby blanket with “Christmas in Dixie” softly playing. That song is not my favorite and I long ago substituted Harry Connick Jr, Michael Buble and Diana Krall as my holiday albums of choice. But there is something so wonderful and so peaceful about seeing her curl up in family tradition while her brother surfs through sports channels on a muted television that I could listen to Alabama sing for the rest of my life. This year our family will add new ingredients to the magical pot of tradition. My son has a wife and baby of his own, but still manages to schedule his busy days in order to be here and pour a glass of champagne to toast the season. Our little Dax will add all kinds of joy to the season as watching him grow is like seeing his dad as a baby all over again. Wow. Holidays can get you down if you’re not careful because it is easy to get lost on memory lane as you wander through the past. Take advantage of change and make new and better traditions for yourself and for your family. And don’t forget the nap blanket. October Birthdays 1

It’s Barktoberfest Fall is the perfect time of year to gather with family, furry-friends and doglovers alike at the 18th annual Barktoberfest. The event is hosted by the Pensacola Humane Society and will be held at the Community Maritime Park on Oct. 27.

Barktoberfest gathers dog-lovers, animal rescues, local businesses, and nonprofits together for a day of pet-friendly family fun. With food trucks, vendors, demonstrations and contests, there are plenty of activities for everyone to get involved with. The event not only raises money for the Pensacola Humane Society but also showcases hundreds of dogs ready for adoption. “A large focus this year is spreading the Humane Society out within the festival to increase the visibility of adoptable pets—it’s a massive venue so visibility matters,” Pensacola Humane Society Executive Director Jennifer Bitner said.

“Adopt Me harnesses are one idea to show people that dogs at the event are available for adoption.” Barktoberfest continues to grow bigger and bigger each year. With an estimated 10,000-plus attendees, the Pensacola Humane Society is hoping for an increase in adoptions. It’s a great opportunity for the Humane Society to host their partners and to highlight animal welfare and the work being done for the greater good of the community.

“Our mega adoption event assists in lifesaving efforts for the animals at our shelter and the other rescues, sanctuaries, and shelters in attendance from all over the Panhandle,” Bitner said. In prior years, Barktoberfest successfully resulted in 10 to 12 adoptions for the Pensacola Humane Society alone. With 20-plus rescues and shelters in attendance this year, there are dogs of all sizes, breeds, and ages up for adoption. Costume contests and games are an integral part of the Barktoberfest fun and a great way to kickstart Halloween festivities. With morning and afternoon sessions, starting at 11 am and 2 pm, attendees are encouraged to participate in costume contests and games. Some of the categories include Best Costume and Best Owner & Pet Costumes for both adults and children. The event fundraises for the Pensacola Humane Society through Barktoberfest T-shirt sales, the Most Adorable Pet Photo Contest, and donations. Pet owners can upload photos of their pets to the photo contest and encourage their friends and family to vote for them. At a dollar per vote, one dollar feeds three shelter cats or two dogs for one day. All proceeds go directly to the Humane Society. The photo contest details can be found at www.gogophotocontest.com/ pensacolahumanesociety. While there are no breed restrictions for the event, the Humane Society requires all dogs in attendance to remain on leash. Other furry companions are welcome, but the Humane Society encourages pet owners to know their pet’s limitations when interacting with other animals.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree By Bara’ah Jaraiseh

Who doesn’t love a Fiddle Leaf Fig these days? These tropical trees have become all the rage in recent years. Their large, thick leaves provide a stunning highlight for any room. Here’s a step-by-step guide to propagating your own FLF.

1 CLIPPING

Pick a stem on an existing FLF to cut. The best selection is a stem with a few healthy leaves. This will increase the success of rooting a new tree. Grab your plant shears and cut a few inches below the last leaf, keeping in mind not to cut the nodes of the plant—cut in between the nodes. Take your cutting and place in water immediately.

2 PREPPING

You will need a rooting hormone to help your FLF propagate. We used a powder from Miracle Grow and a gel from Clonex, both available online. Follow the directions on the bottle. Each brand is a bit different, but essentially dip the end into the hormone and place back into the water.

3 PLACEMENT

Place your cutting in a jar or cup of chlorine-free water. If using tap water allow it to sit overnight. Keep jar / cup indoors near a window with indirect sunlight. Try to change out the water about once a week. Patience is key to this whole process, give your FLF time to root. This may take up to 12 weeks.

4 ROOTING

Woohoo! We have roots! This long process pays off when you finally see those healthy roots sprout in the water. Wait for them to grow for a few more weeks to make sure the roots are strong and healthy once you plant them in soil.

5 POTTING

After about 12 to 14 weeks, your new tree is ready to transfer into soil! Get a pot ready and fill with soil. Make an impression in the middle of the pot and gently place roots in hole. Top the rest of the roots with soil.

6 CARE

Fiddle Leaf Figs do best indoors. Place in window or indirect sunlight. Remember not to over water your new treeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;just a 1/3 cup of water every week should be all it needs. Once established, use indoor fertilizer monthly and wipe leaves with damp rag.

FavorHouse of Northwest Florida hosts Faces of Domestic Violence Benefit October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to honor survivors, remember victims, bring awareness to the issue and advocate for safe spaces and legal remedies for those effected. To that end, FavorHouse of Northwest Florida spends every month of the year working on their mission to make sure victims become survivors and their goal of eradicating violence from intimate relationships. FavorHouse works toward this goal by offering shelter, tutoring, support groups, counseling, access to attorneys and advocacy to those attempting to leave an abusive situation. All services are offered at no charge and the organization is funded by grants and donations.

In that spirit, FavorHouse is hosting a unique fundraiser for their shelter programs that support domestic violence survivors in creating a bridge to their new beginnings. Featuring American Idol finalists and domestic violence survivors Wade Cota and Jess Meuse, the event concludes the organization’s 40-4040 campaign, a 40-day initiative with the goal to raise $40,000 in honor of the commencement of the nonprofit’s 40th year. The initiative also features a silent auction, which began at the September kick-off event and will run online through the end of October. FavorHouse president Sue Hand is very excited about the choice of performers for the event. “Wade and Jess are both survivors,” Hand said. “And, I think it’s truly important 18 Pensacola Magazine

that people understand that these people are survivors of domestic violence in their personal lives and they have grown and gone on to be successful. It allows people to understand that with support—emotionally, physically and mentally— survivors can blossom and have great careers and a good life.” The fundraiser and concert will be held at the Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio on Saturday, Oct. 26. General Admission tickets are on sale for $40. VIP tables, seating eight guests, are available for $1,000. VIP tables include a formal, plated dinner, as well as a short, private show and a meet-and-greet with performers. Jess Meuse Jess Meuse is a musician from Slapout, Alabama who has performed for audiences since she was 10-years-

old. At age 20, the singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and classically-trained violinist won Stars of Alabama, a statewide artist showcase. In 2012, Meuse was featured on season three of NBC's The Voice. The following year, she performed on the Vans Warped Tour stage. Later, Meuse secured a spot as a top four national finalist on American Idol, judged by Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr. During the American Idol finals, Meuse made history by becoming the first artist to perform their own original song. She went on join the Idols LIVE Tour, performing in 40-plus cities across the USA and Canada. Having survived and left an abusive relationship of her own, Meuse knows firsthand the importance of an organization like FavorHouse.

“I know how years of mental, emotional and physical abusive can wear you down,” Meuse said. “You truly come to a point where you feel useless. I know that’s where I went.” Fortunately for Meuse, she found the strength to leave the relationship before she married her abuser. “I think what really made me shift and to understand that I had to leave him was the realization that he would not be a good father if I ever decided I wanted to have a family,” Meuse said. “I also realized that if he is not going to be a good father, he is not going to be a good partner either.” Meuse is excited to support the efforts of FavorHouse and lend her voice to those who need a hand. “I think it’s awesome that I get to take such a crappy experience and do

something good with it. It almost gives a purpose to going through hell,” she said. Wade Cota Wade Cota is a singer/ songwriter from Phoenix, Arizona. A childhood domestic violence survivor, Cota captured the hearts of audiences across America during his audition for American Idol in its most recent season. He went on to become a top four finalist on the show. Before his rise to fame on Idol, Cota performed at all of Arizona's major venues as the front man of his band Sugar Water. Cota is looking forward to helping FavorHouse with their mission and sees the opportunity as a great way to give back. “FavorHouse heard my story on American Idol and they reached out to me,” Cota said. “Before American Idol, I had never really talked about my past, even to a lot of my very close friends. I am a product of domestic violence. My family and I have been through a lot, so when FavorHouse talked to me about their cause and how they are trying to help women and kids who are growing up like I did, it was no brainer. I had to do it. I wish I could give back more.” FavorHouse began in June 1979, when the Spouse Abuse Task Force became the Favor (Family Anti-Violence in Organized Response) House Advisory Council, a program of the YWCA. During that

year, funding became available from the Marriage License Trust Fund and FavorHouse was the designated program recipient for funds in District I. Because of growth and expanded services, the YWCA felt it could not accept the responsibility of a growing program. Consequently in 1980, the FavorHouse Advisory Council became independent of the YWCA and incorporated as FavorHouse of Northwest Florida, Inc., and a Florida not-for-profit corporation. Since 1980, the agency has relocated the shelter twice, each time adding more beds and more rooms. An expansive project, which included four bedrooms and two baths, was completed in March 1999. The Escambia emergency shelter capacity is 50 beds with a children’s playroom and a children’s counseling room. In 2001, FavorHouse added a shelter for Santa Rosa County. Dating back to ancient Egypt, hats have transformed from a required accessory to protect one from the harsh elements to a popular fashion commodity. The term millinery, or the design and manufacture of hats, can be traced back to the Italian city of Milan, where travelling merchants traded the finest silk, ribbon and fabric. Travelling milliners were often the first sources of the newest fashion trends and designs. Today, milliners continue to interpret rapidly changing fashion trends to design hats around both their client’s clothing and the venues for the events they attend.

AmyJo Traylor, a local Pensacola milliner and owner of AmyJo Original Hats, got her start in the hat making profession in 2014. It all started when Traylor was in London and purchased a hat block and some fabric on a whim and decided to teach herself how to make hats. Largely self-taught, she has taken a few instruction courses through Hat Academy, based out of Australia. Since then, Traylor's hats have starred in the Kentucky Oaks Longines Fashion Contest, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Kentucky Derby and even internationally at the

Royal Ascot and Church with Queen Elizabeth. “All of my hats are handmade in my studio. Each design starts from a flat piece of fabric and is shaped around a balsa wood hat block. Often, the design inspiration revolves around the client’s dress. Many clients will send their dresses to me and allow a lot of artistic license in creating the perfect look,” said Traylor. The right shape on the right person can look so amazing.” people started to take notice. Quickly she gathered a following of people that wanted to buy the kind of hats she was making for herself. Giving her clients exactly what they want is essential in her design and manufacture of hats. However, she doesn’t just give her clients exactly what they want, she also helps them discover what styles work best for their aesthetic. “I think there are a lot of locals who would love to wear hats if they found the right hat shape to accentuate their features. The right shape on the right person can look so amazing,” Traylor said. A bespoke milliner creates custom, original and unique hat designs tailored to a client’s dress, hairstyle, face shape and event venue. Bespoke guarantees that a client’s hat will stand out at an event as an original design made specifically for them. Many of Traylor’s clients are looking for a bespoke design, which she said, “leaves a lot of opportunity for creativity.” Horse races are well-known for big, bold, beautiful, one-of-a-kind hats. Many attendees of horse races, nationally and internationally, commission milliners to create their hats. “The biggest hats I make are typically for the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby,” explained Traylor. “Hatinators and wide brim hats are my favorite to make. Hatinators are big hats but have a slimmer profile like a fascinator.” Hatinators and fascinators are two of the most popular hats in the fashion scene currently. Both hatinators and fascinators are typically fastened to the head with a band that secures the 22 Pensacola Magazine

hat around the head. Hatinators are characterized for their larger size, while fascinators on the other hand, are much smaller and traditionally worn on either the left or right side of the head, not covering the entire head. Traylor makes both styles of hats for a variety of occasions. While many of Traylor’s hats are worn to large events such as galas, fashion shows, debutant luncheons and horse races, there are plenty of local occasions to sport a hat. “Most people don’t realize how a hat can transform an ordinary outfit into an extraordinary ensemble,” said Traylor. During the Mardi Gras and wedding season many of Traylor’s clients travel to Pensacola to commission hats from her. Hats are a staple of Southern culture—worn to weddings, parades and church. Traylor’s own Southern roots are what inspired her to begin making hats. Growing up she always loved hats and wore one to church every Sunday. A hat simply topped off any outfit that she wore. “I got into millinery because I love wearing hats. To expand my hat repertoire, I decided that if I made my own hats, I could have exactly what I wanted,” said Traylor. Bold color combinations and big bows are a signature of her hats. Hats might be a fashionable accessory to most, but they can also be utilized in many ways: to cover your face from the sun, complete your outfit, accentuate your face and features and even connect one with their local culture. A Creative Twist on Halloween Carvings When it comes to Halloween,

carving the same pumpkin designs each year can become routine. This year, save a pumpkin and carve your spooky masterpiece into a watermelon instead. Nutrient-rich watermelon can be a healthy alternative to other sweet treats full of added sugar during Halloween festivities as it’s a source of vitamins A and C as well as the antioxidant lycopene and the amino acid citrulline. Because they are made up of 92 percent water, watermelons can be an effective way to stay hydrated during trickor-treating, and creations like a Mummy or Jack O’Melon can help satisfy sweet cravings while keeping friends and family members frightfully delighted.

To get started, consider these carving tips and tricks: • To make cutting and slicing easier, the watermelon should be at room temperate when carving. • Cut a small, thin, flat piece from the bottom of the watermelon to provide a stable base for carving. • Draw the design on the watermelon rind with a dry-erase marker before cutting. If you make a mistake, this can make it easier to wipe off. • Use a sharp knife with a pointed tip for easier, cleaner cuts. Consider a paring knife with a smaller tip for ease of detail. • Blend scraps of watermelon that are too messy for dicing or slicing to create an easy juice. Mummy Supplies and Tools: Watermelon Cutting board Kitchen knife Dry-erase marker Paring knife Melon baller Scoop Vegetable peeler Cheesecloth or gauze Straight pin (optional) Battery-operated candle or light Small bowl Blueberries or bloody candy eyes Toothpicks, pins or glue Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-1/2-inch of rind from bottom to provide sturdy base, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. Cut 1-2 inches from stem end to create opening for bowl to be added. Using dry-erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving. Use paring knife to cut them out, being sure to cut through to red flesh to let more light flow through. Use melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Reserve watermelon balls. Use scoop to remove remaining watermelon. Using vegetable peeler, remove green skin off outside of watermelon, similar to peeling cucumber. Wrap thin strips cheesecloth or gauze around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed. Place battery-operated candle or light inside carving and fit small bowl into top of carving. Trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely. Fill bowl with melon balls. Attach candy eyes or blueberries using a toothpicks, pins or glue.

Remove flesh from inside watermelon using melon baller, reserving melon balls for snacking. Hollow out remaining watermelon flesh and use blender to juice scraps and excess juice. Using dry-erase marker, draw outlines of eyes, nose, mouth, hair, ears and other features on side of watermelon. If mistake is made with marker, wipe off using paper towel to start over. Following outlines, carve features into watermelon and remove excess rind. Safe, battery-operated light can be firmly placed inside watermelon to provide haunting glow. Place circular piece of rind back on top of watermelon.

The festival kic far and wide for the Oct. 31 and runs until Nov. 11. Fire & Rain will kick off Foo Foo Festival this year on October 31, lining Intendencia Street and stretching roughly 9,500 sq. ft. Dancing in the wind like a Chinese Dragon parade, the installation is made out of reflective hand-made strands of mylar and monofilament. Fire & Rain will shape-shift in the wind and reflect different colors and shadows in the rising and setting sun. Through semi-permanent and permanent installations, like Fire & Rain and various murals downtown, Foo Foo Festival attracts hundreds of visitors to the Pensacola area. Visitors come to check out the art, snap a picture or a selfie and peruse the downtown area. With more than 30 reoccurring events this year, Foo Foo Festival is just too big to highlight every event. However, here are a few events from each discipline:

The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival (Nov 1-4) is a threeday nationally ranked art festival set up in Seville Square. The festival has live music, life craft demonstrations and more than 200 artists displaying their artwork. Artists range from various genres: painters, potters, sculptors, jewelers, graphic artists, blacksmiths, engravers, spinners and weavers. The festival is a great way to support local (and travelling) artists and take home unique pieces of artwork. 3d Printsacola “skateable skulpture” (Nov 1). The Institute for Human and Machine Cognition and the First City Arts Center have collaborated to create 3D printed concrete “skulptures,” with augmented reality technology. The event will feature the skateable “skulptures” and a live skating demonstration by professional street skater Rodney Mullen.

Stomp Fest—2019 Invitational Step Show (Nov 2). Located in the Pensacola Bay Center, Stomp Fest features local and traveling step-dancers from various Sororities, Fraternities and organizations nationwide. The event is based off the “125-year-old African American College Fraternity and Sorority Tradition of ‘Stepping,’” explains Foo Foo Festival’s website. Stepping uses the body as an instrument for storytelling by incorporating footsteps, drill, claps, and even spoken word. The event highlights the popular dance form through collegiate competition. Pensacola Symphony Orchestra: Ohlsson Plays Brahms (Nov 2). Located in the nearly hundred-yearold historic Pensacola Saenger Theater, Garrick Ohlsson will be playing Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1, a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will Perform at Vinyl Music Hall Nov. 4.

Spray-painting graffiti onto the brown-paper covered walls of the Zarzaur law building is a popular spot during Pensacola’s monthly Gallery Night’s. This event fundraises for the local Gulf Coast Kid’s House and features the live painting by local artists onto three canvases on the side of the building. Beaches to Woodlands The Beaches to Woodlands Tour is Santa Rosa County’s annual celebration of art, culture, nature and history. Celebrating its 16 anniversary, the tour curates unique local events that span multiple communities throughout the county. While North Hill homes are often associated with the early 1900s, there are a handful of uniquely mid-century homes dotting the historic district as well. One shining example of mid-century architecture and design is 1675 N. Reus. Built in 1952, the 4,222 square foot home features four bedrooms, six baths and multiple living spaces in a horseshoe design all centered on a breathtaking courtyard. Homeowners Lisa and Jonathan Papic purchased the home in 2017 and transformed the Hollywood regency

style into a more modern and contemporary look by adding mid-century, art deco and other distinguishing touches with the help of many talented local artists, craftsmen and vendors. How to Tell When your Roof Needs Repair Four out of five homes in the U.S. have asphalt shingles. And it's easy to see why. The wide variety of available colors and styles, combined with durability and affordability, have made asphalt shingles the leading choice for residential roofing in the country. Like all exterior building products, asphalt shingles start to age as soon as they are exposed to nature. Buildings experience aging factors differently, so it's difficult to predict how long shingles will last. With storm chasers and insurance adjusters claiming roof damage or defective shingles after major weather events, it's important for homeowners to arm themselves with information about what type of roof aging is normal, and most importantly, what type is not. What is normal? It's natural for a roof to age, and the process begins as soon as shingles are exposed to nature. The sun can raise rooftop temperatures as high as 50-70 degrees above the ambient air temperature. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and heat have been shown to accelerate roof aging, as have pollution, hail, snow, ice, falling tree limbs and people walking it. Here are a few common signs of aging shingles: Curling is a common phenomenon in some shingles and is not considered a defect. It is natural for asphalt to age and shrink with time, which may result in a slight curling of the shingle edge. Minor cracks may also appear on the shingles as they age, but industry experts say it is a 52 On The Market

normal weathering characteristic and not cause for alarm, as long as the cracks do not penetrate through the shingle and the roof is still performing the intended purpose of shedding water. "Minor cracks may not be noticeable from the ground, but people often spot them while hanging their Christmas lights," said roofing industry expert Rick "the Roofer" Taylor, a longtime roofing contractor now working as a traveling trainer for shingle manufacturer TAMKO Building Products. "The intense heat from the sun can deplete some of the protective asphalt oils, and that can cause minor cracks." Dark brown or black streaks down the roof are common in particularly moist or humid areas of the country, and are the result of algae growth on the shingles. While not particularly attractive, these stains should not affect the shingles' ability to shed water. Some granule loss on the shingles is to be expected, especially if a roof has been recently repaired or replaced, since extra granules are a part of the shingle manufacturing process. Loose granules are usually noticed collecting in roof gutters after the shingles are installed. This type of granule shedding is common and not a cause for concern. What is cause for concern? While minor curling, surface cracking, closed blisters, algae stains and some granule loss can all be signs of normal roof aging, some

more serious roof wear and aging could be indicative of a potential problem, and should be examined and monitored. These roof issues may need attention: Blisters, or small circular raised areas, are often the direct result of under-ventilated attics or excessive use of plastic cement â&#x20AC;&#x201C; both of which are installation errors. If the blisters are closed and are not affecting the shingles' performance, they are not a cause for concern. But if the blisters are open, exposing the asphalt, the roof is vulnerable to water penetration and requires immediate attention. Buckling, a distortion of the shingles, can be a possible sign of inadequate roof ventilation, issues with the roof deck or other installation errors and may require attention. Deep cracks that penetrate through the fiberglass mat should be investigated, as they may compromise the roof's ability to shed water and make it susceptible to leaks. Excessive granule loss that exposes the shingles' asphalt layer is a reason for concern and requires immediate attention. Armed with this basic information, homeowners should be able to distinguish between natural processes that are no cause for alarm and issues that do require attention and repair. Preparing For Disaster: 9 Things You Can Do Now Are you prepared if a disaster were to hit? If you aren't, making sure to prioritize this initiative for you and your family is smart. Disasters don't plan ahead, but you can. Here are nine things you can do now to ensure you are prepared: Sign up for alerts and warnings. Utilizing your mobile device or computer, you are able to download weather apps that alert you each time there is an emergency in your area. Build a personal and family plan. Communicate with your family the importance of a plan in the case of a disaster. Ready.gov has a template for you to get started, such as, practicing family drills (how to escape your home if there was a fire) and establishing a reunification point (where to meet up if you get separated).

Touch base with neighbors. Involve your close neighbors in your family and disaster plan. Discuss the skills you may have that would help in an emergency and help one another by sharing resources and ways you can support each other. Gather supplies, also known as a go-bag, which has emergency items that could potentially save your life in an emergency. Safeguard documents. Ensure that all important and critical documents are kept safe in a waterproof and fire prevention safe. Scan or take pictures of important documents and email them to yourself for safekeeping in an email folder or in a cloud account. Documents such as your Social Security card, driver's license, medical insurance card, homeowners or rental insurance policy should be put away for safety. Participate in a preparedness class. FEMA has disaster preparation courses that are available online and in a location near you. Visit the FEMA website to find more information on these courses.

Check your insurance policy. Review your coverage and talk to your insurance provider if you have any questions beforehand. Make sure your property is safe. Check your property for any improvements that can be made to reduce potential injury or property damage. Ensure all outdoor furniture is moved to a safe area and that you take the proper precautions based on the type of weather. Be aware of fraud. Unfortunately, there are fraudsters taking advantage of disasters to prey on those in need. Some of the most common approaches include rehab scams, FEMA support scams or an increase in phishing emails. Stay aware and check out FEMA's website for more information.
