literally ever y attraction under the sun, the Lost Key is easy to find, easy to love and impossible to forget.
Those who live in Perdido Key are never surprised by the sudden grins that break out when visitors first gaze upon the beaches here. It’s a quiet paradise that the locals revere and reveal almost like a secret.
Getting lost on the Lost Key was once a common occurrence for seafarers in search of riches and armed only with their navigational skills and a pinch of good luck . In 1559, Don Tristan de Luna, a Spanish conquistador, was the first to land on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
Perdido Key, also known as the “Lost Key,” is a place where dolphins swim freely, fearlessly, and openly to kayaks and fellow swimmers, and where a myriad of birds watch your bait as closely as you do when you whip a fishing line into the Gulf.
Native Americans had inhabited the shores for thousands of years by then, but de Luna represented one of the first attempts by Europeans to colonize this abundant New World.
Nature itself—the wind, the water and the sand—built these beaches. And those who are lucky enough to live here understand that when perfection presents itself, it’s best to just leave it alone.
Both the Spanish and the French recognized this as a prize worth fighting for ; the Spanish ruled Panzacola (Pensacola) to the east and the French held Maubila (Mobile) to the west, but neither nation could find a way to enter the vast, mysterious bay between the two.
Ever y morning , the beaches roll out the white carpet, while the Gulf of Mexico adds waves of applause. Beautifully underdeveloped, incomparably serene, yet close enough to

Fortunately, in 1693, a Spanish cartographer, Don Carlos Siquenza, fig ured it out by accident (or perhaps mariner’s luck). Caught in a sudden storm at sea, Siquenza and his crew were g uided by a group of Spaniards into a calm, deep -water channel. Safely ashore, Siquenza realized he was in the elusive bay he had long been searching for, and appropriately named it “Perdido,” or “lost.” And just as our ancestors once stumbled upon these shores, many people today find that Perdido Key is a lost paradise—a serene destination full of bounty and beauty. A place where the water sparkles under moonlit skies and sun-filled days, while you stand at the shore and wonder how you ever got through life without seeing this view. A place where the sun angles for your attention, the anglers cast lures and nets, seag ulls whistle by and the surf rolls in like the closing credits in a great movie. Whether you’re beginning a new life together, enjoying that life with children and family, or perhaps you’re a snowbird finding the perfect place to land, each day here starts when you

It’s a quiet paradise that the locals revere, and reveal almost like a secret. say it does, and it doesn’t end until you’ve seen ever ything , felt ever ything , done ever ything . With more than 16 miles of shoreline, shops, restaurants, attractions and more, there is much to be seen and enjoyed in this beautiful, coastal city. And we welcome you to explore it all! There is far more to this paradise than just meets the eye, and while you’ll find plenty of information in this g uide, we also recommend doing what the Spanish did so many years ago —ask a local! We mean it when we say, “ We’re glad you found us.”

Off the
Beaten path More than 60 percent of Perdido Key’s 16 miles is set aside as protected l and. That means miles and miles of parks, trails, rivers, inlets, pl aygrounds, kayak and canoeing areas, and pl aces to hunt and collect seashells. On the Key, you can spot exotic and native birds and see wildlife in the actual wild. Many species are endangered and protected under federal law. Loggerhead, leatherback, ridley and green sea turtles arrive around May to dig nest cavities in the sand. There, they’ll lay about 100 egg s, and, unless those egg s are disturbed, turtle hatchling s eventually emerge and head for the brightest spot in the sky, which is usually the horizon over the water, leading them to sea . The Pensacola Lighthouse is near the National Naval Aviation Museum and remains an active navigational g uide with its bright beacon visible for 27 miles. Climb the stairs to the ver y top and you’ll be rewarded with not only some fantastic photo opportunities, but a sticker
06 The Perdido key visitors guide 2012
that tells the world where you went—to the top. The lighthouse is rumored to be haunted by the late owners of the land it sits upon, and has even been featured on the program Ghost Hunters. So you may want to travel in pairs. Don’t forget to tour Fort Barrancas, which sits on a bluff overlooking the entrance to Pensacola Bay. The area includes the historic Water Batter y, trails, a visitor center, picnic area and the Advanced Redoubt. There’s a gift shop and a ranger to answer your questions about the place that’s been called “an architectural wonder.” To the east, Fort Pickens is a massive fortress that was completed in 1834, during the era of wooden warships and cannons firing round balls. In 1886, the famous Apache Indian Geronimo spent some time behind the bars of the Fort. Upon learning that tourists would buy buttons from the clothing he was wearing , Geronimo would gladly barter and sell those buttons—then immediately sew on new ones to sell to the next crowd. Back on Perdido Key, you’re going to love what the Girl Scouts have crafted for you. They built and maintain The Cookie Trail, not with cookies but with pine straw and bark .
It’s a great place for off-road biking , and they’ll soon completely cover the trail with a layer of wood chips to ensure better traction. From the trail, you’ll see longleaf pines, lowgrowing flowers, sand dunes, white egrets at the water’s edge and, perhaps most spectacularly, swimming slowly through what we call Big Lagoon. If you’re a snorkeler, kayaker, canoe enthusiast or someone who just likes water and sunsets, you’ll find Big Lagoon is what separates Perdido Key from the mainland and is one of our most spectacular parks. In fact, it’s part of a wide array of federal and state parks in the area that continue, in the face of expanding development elsewhere, to be protected, abundant and thriving . There are few such areas left in Florida boasting wetlands, estuaries and wildlife. This area’s state park system has been voted “Best in America” and recognized by Stephen “Dr. Beach” Leatherman as one of the best. Although there are miles of foot trails, picnic areas and places to camp, much of it is accessible only by water or by foot—and Sand Island is accessible only by boat, where it makes a stunning sunset background.
Like our beaches, our trails and parks are among the best anywhere. Like our beaches, our trails and parks are among the best anywhere. Three Perdido Key state parks draw visitors year-round : Big Lagoon State Park, where you can climb a four-stor y obser vation tower ; Perdido Key State Park with 1.4 miles of powder-sand beaches and white-sand dunes anchored by protected sea oats, and Tarkiln Bayou State Park, home to more than 100 rare and exotic plants and animals. One of those plants, the carnivorous pitcher plant, consumes flies, small insects and even small frog s. So take a picture while you’re there, but watch your back! Rosamond Johnson Beach is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the sand there is considered among the whitest, most beautiful sand in America . It’s also where you can pick up some of the best seashells in the area .

heaven
A Dog’s
this dog is one happy camper! Mom and dad must have found some kind of dog heaven, cuz I’m living in it right now! You pups might not believe this, but I actually get to stay inside a real condo. And get this…my humans don’t have to hide me. Unbelievable! They keep saying “Perdido” a lot so I ’m g uessing that’s what heaven is called. All I can say is, “ Wow. When can I come back?” My first day here was exhilarating , spent running with the big dog s at Bill Dixon Dog Park. I even took a few laps around the park . Best part of the day was being off the leash and letting the wind rip through my coat as I ran faster than my leg s had ever gone. Ahhh, Perdido! Just when I thought this vacation couldn’t get any better, I got to spend a full day of pampering and playing at Bella Pooch. Now don’t tell anyone I went to daycare, but I have to admit that this place rocked! They walked me, scratched my belly on command and let me nap in peace. I definitely like this kind of daycare!
14 The Perdido key visitors guide 2012
You pups probably think I ’m just dreaming , especially when I tell you that I went to dinner with my humans last night. Yeah, yeah, I know…nobody allows dog s in restaurants. But apparently this Perdido place really likes dog s. So I ’m sitting next to my human dad at The Rib Shak and right next to me was this pretty pooch. You know I love my ribs, and I ’m a sucker for a pretty face, so a few shy glances later and I was basking in her beauty while gnawing on the juiciest bone I ’d ever had. There’s a lot more to tell, but I gotta get some shut-eye. I hear tomorrow’s a big day. Big Lagoon State Park, free dog treats at The Sunset Grille and hopefully another juic y bone. Ahh, Perdido…this is my kinda place!

Ambition
Next–Gen adventures Kids can enjoy overnight camp while parents bask on perdido key. A sailboat capsizes in the Gulf of Mexico just as a hurricane is approaching . Who will rescue the sailors and how will they do it ? That’s an example of the hypothetical challenges facing young people at the National Flight Academy at Pensacola Naval Air Station, which offers three-day and five-day overnight camps for middle school and high school students. The camp is set aboard Ambition, a simulated aircraft carrier, all part of a program to make learning fun and to stimulate children’s interest in science, technolog y, engineering and math. It’s a great place for parents to leave their children for a safe, fun experience while mom and dad enjoy themselves on Perdido Key. The camp recognizes that video games can bring out the best in students; gamers are among the smartest and most entrepreneurial in the countr y. The camp’s instructors use video games and other activities to encourage leadership, team building , critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The atmosphere

is upbeat, with plenty of simulators to use on mission-oriented scenarios based on real-life incidents. The facility, next to the National Naval Aviation Museum, is state-of-the art. The simulated ship covers 100,000 square feet and includes bunk rooms, a galley, and the sights and sounds of an aircraft carrier. It is staffed around-the-clock by trained personnel. “ We have invested in ever y premium technolog y. Ever ything here is what they call ‘next gen,’ for what we hope is the next generation of heroes, innovators, leaders and workers,” said National Flight Academy president, VADM Gerr y Hoewing . Living on the edge do you have what it takes to fly, sail, paddle, skim or push the throttle forward as you race across the l and, water or sky? Sure you do! Ever ybody has a wild side, something they’ve always dared themselves to do. And we’re daring you to tr y it right here in Perdido Key. We’ll make sure you play ever ything smart and safe, and when you come back down to earth—or back to shore—you’ll be exhilarated. One of the best views of Perdido Key is from the air, but we’re not talking about a plane. Parasailing is the up -and-coming way to catch the view from 400 to 800 feet above the Gulf. You can strap in alone or take as many as three people with you. While you are gently lifted into the air from a state-of-the-art parasail boat, you’ll experience the incredible, panoramic view of the Gulf Coast. You may even be lucky enough to spot some marine life from high atop our waters. And you can leave your worries ashore, as boats are staffed and super vised by U.S. Coast Guard certified captains, with an emphasis on

providing a spectacular, memorable and safe experience. Bring a camera for this one, but hold onto it tight! If crashing waves is more your speed, tr y jet skiing! You’ll find we have some of the newest and fastest jet skis available—nothing gets you out into the open sea faster! And if it’s marine life you want to see, or just the pure excitement of having your hair blown back or racing with friends and family, jet skiing is the way to do it. It’s a wild adventure! Just listen to your experienced team of instructors, then listen to your instincts and launch yourself into the Gulf like a wave-cresting rocket. Still want more ? How about a ride on a banana boat? These six-seat inflatable boats are pulled through the water by an expertly driven jet ski. Ideal for adventuresome friends and family, this is a wild ride, so we suit you up with life jackets. Don’t want to wear a life jacket ? No problem. Our seaborne trampoline is fun for adults and kids. Perfect for executing flips and high jumps without fear, the trampoline is surrounded by the softest, wettest landing pad around—the Gulf of Mexico.
Here’s another experience you won’t want to miss while you’re here : a dolphin cruise will give you an unforgettable, up -closeand-personal look at some of nature’s most playful mammals, along with seabirds, marine life and breathtaking views of the surrounding Gulf. Many of our visitors choose to go a little bit deeper—diving, that is. Just 22 miles offshore is the USS Oriskany, the largest artificial reef in the world, and a once-in-alifetime diving adventure. At 911’ long , 150’ tall and 146’ wide, the Oriskany was sunk in 212’ of water, attracting all species of marine life from the smallest reef fish to some of the largest fish in the Gulf. Rental equipment and ship captains are plentiful, and properly trained, credentialed divers can have one of the most astounding dives of their life.

Whether it is the thrill of a speeding jet ski, or a memorable moment watching dolphins play as you cruise our emerald-green waters, we are sure you will find exactly what you are looking for on-shore and off here in beautiful Perdido.

The manly sport
of fishing While some guys may choose to wrestle pol ar bears, the ones here in the south are just a tad bit different–and maybe a little more protective. You see, down here, we enjoy a different kind of manly fun–fishing (and preferably staying out of the hospital ). So if you’re looking for the kind of sport that we get to enjoy all year, this is the perfect place for you—go ahead, adopt that I-forgot-to -shave look and grab a rod and reel! Fishing is easily the most popular dinnerproducing , recreational sport here, but make sure you have a license, even if you’re here for just a brief visit. The only places you can fish in Florida without a fishing license are on piers or charter boats that possess a license that covers ever yone. Choose from simple surfcasting (fishing from the sand with light tackle, often for speckled trout or Spanish mackerel ), offshore fishing or deep sea fishing.
28 The Perdido key visitors guide 2012
Offshore fishing is just what it sounds like–far enough from the beach to get you where the bigger fish are, and deep sea fishing is where the trophy fish await you. In each case, select a charter boat with a U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain and appropriate safety gear, particularly life vests. Most charter trips provide rods, reels, bait and tackle, but be sure to ask about food and especially bottled water. And don’t forget the tip! What possible grill-bait awaits you out there ? It depends on the season, but you could wind up with, among others, wahoo, speckled trout, triggerfish, flounder, redfish, sheepshead, red snapper, amberjack, mangrove snapper and sometimes…ummm, shark .
Deep sea fishing is where the trophy fish await you.
Way out there (deep sea fishing) are powerful, fighting billfish that can take hours to battle and haul out of the sea, and then a few more hours to admire and photograph. Ever y charter company has specific rules (for example, non-skid shoes for safety, and no black-soled shoes to avoid marring the boat), so please call before you choose a company. Interested in a fishing tournament ? June is the most popular month here, and features the Bill Hargreaves Annual Fishing Rodeo (to benefit the Ronald McDonald House). Soon after is the Bud Light King Mackerel Tournament, drawing anglers to a $7,500 first prize. And a few days later comes the nearby Annual Pensacola International Billfish Tournament, where in 2011, a tuna weighed in at almost 100 pounds (sorr y, Charlie) and a hefty 480-pound blue marlin was reeled in. Not bad for a day’s catch! With so many fishing options here in Perdido, we’re sure you won’t find any problem at all getting your macho on!

Lost history shaped by Uncle Sam & Mother Nature It may be hard to believe, but the federal government once tried to give away much of perdido key. This was after the Spanish-American War, when the government gave “warrants” for tracts of Perdido Key to veterans who had ser ved in the war. As local historian and author John Appleyard notes, the warrants for land on a Florida beach were of little interest to veterans living in Maine, Wisconsin and other faraway locales. But Pensacola businessman Theo Baars and his family recognized that they might want to own property on the skinny, 16-mile-long island. They sent agents to buy the warrants from the veterans, and eventually acquired more than 13,000 acres. Still, this was long before the days when many people went to the beach. Slow transportation, the lack of federal flood insurance and a different culture discouraged people from building big homes on a barrier island, let alone sitting on sugar-white sand and whiling
away their days as surf rolled in and birds soared overhead. The Key remained largely undeveloped. Fast-for ward to the 1970s. Housing began to sprout up as Gulf Coast beaches became popular, but people wanted land set aside for public recreation and for preser vation of the wildlife and plant life. The federal government acquired land and incorporated a huge chunk of Perdido Key into Gulf Islands National Seashore. The State of Florida created Perdido Key State Park—270-plus acres—and established nearby

Big Lagoon State Park and later, Tarkiln Bayou Preser ve. The result: More than 60 percent of Perdido Key is preser ved for public use. This opens miles of land for your enjoyment; nothing more permanent than a tent or a beach umbrella is allowed.
but Appleyard says records going back to the 1800s show its official name even then as Perdido Key, which in Spanish means “lost island.” The island has a long , rich histor y and many, many people have visited it, yet parts of Perdido Key are much as they were hundreds of years ago, shaped more by nature than by man.
The preser vation has worked. Dr. Stephen Leatherman, an environmental scientist nicknamed “Dr. Beach” for his research, says the Key has some of the clearest water and some of the best swimming areas in the nation. Old-timers sometimes refer to it as Gulf Beach,
ROSAMOND JOHNSON BEACH Army Private Rosamond Johnson, Jr. was the first resident of Escambia County, Fla. to die in the Korean War. During a skirmish on July 26, 1950, Johnson carried two wounded soldiers to safety and was returning with a third when he was fatally wounded. He was only 17 years old. At the time of Johnson’s death, Pensacola beaches were racially segregated and this particular beach was a popular area for
African Americans. After the Korean Conflict ended, the Sunset Riding Club Inc. wanted to rename the beach in honor this fallen hero, so they leased the land from the county in 1950 and designated it for the sole use of “our colored citizens.” The lease was cancelled in 1956, and the area added to Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1973, but the name “Rosamond Johnson Beach” has remained. Johnson was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart on August 21, 1950.

Arts & Entertainment
Brighten beach life Day, night, summer, winter...there is always something fun to do if you’re visiting perdido key. With so much natural beauty and wildlife, the Key is an inspiring spot for artists who stake out vantage points with their easels and cameras. Pensacola-born artist Margaret Biggs, for example, maintains a galler y at Villagio Plaza. A former international model, Bigg s is a modern realist who paints seascapes and landscapes drawn from the Gulf Coast. While you’re at Villagio, you’ll also want to visit Artworks Studio and Galler y, where local artists display and sell their original artwork . You’ll find painting s, potter y and jewelr y there. Although summer is the most popular time for sunbathers, people enjoy a slate of fun activities year-round on Perdido Key. There’s a ver y popular wine and art festival ever y spring , and the Flora–Bama Lounge holds numerous events throughout the year. They include the Frank Brown International Song writers’ Festival, the Mullet Toss and an
annual Polar Bear Dip, when people dash into the chilly Gulf of Mexico –and sometimes exit much more quickly. Hundreds of song writers and music-lovers turn out for the song writers’ festival, a 10-day event in November that overlaps with the Blue Angels’ season-ending air show at Pensacola Naval Air Station. The festival is part of the Key’s support of music and song writers; most clubs and restaurants provide live music ever y week . Some start at noon and run into the wee hours, as members of different bands join in for spontaneous, crowd-pleasing entertainment. The Frank Brown International Song writers’ Festival has a strong countr y flair since many of the writers have Nashville connections, but the music also covers rock, pop, blues, Broadway and more. The writers have turned out song s made famous by ever yone from George Strait to Bette Midler. Fish fly at the Mullet Toss the last full weekend in April as people flock to the FloraBama to throw mullet across the FloridaAlabama state line, which the bar straddles. The quirky contest, a fund-raiser for charity, is a hit with families and groups who travel from faraway homes to participate.

The Polar Bear Dip was the brainchild of FloraBama co -owner Pat McClellan, who once dared a couple of barkeeps to start the new year with a cold splash. The idea is now a ritual for many who want a chill thrill on New Year’s Day. Visitors to Perdido Key will find a mecca of antiques and collectibles at nearby shops. The area’s long histor y provides many items, while others come from the many militar y personnel who acquired all sorts of interesting objects in their travels around the world. Creek Indian histor y and the environment are focal points of a center operated by the Perdido Bay Tribe. The Native Paths Cultural Heritage Museum displays life over the centuries for Indians in the South. The tribe operates a greenhouse that preser ves native specimens, and works on restoration of Jones Swamp Preser ve, a fascinating ecosystem. Visitors also can get up -close looks at nature on the bays and inlets. There are dolphin cruises, dinner cruises and sailing adventures, among others. These boating expeditions, g uided by savvy veterans, make learning about nature fun for young people.
40 The Perdido key visitors guide 2012
although summer is the most popul ar time for sunbathers, people enjoy a sl ate of fun activities year-round. Sanctuar y in the Grove/Theatre West has unusual plays and an unusual setting ; it’s in a former church. The high-quality shows range from original works by local writers to “ The Diaries of Adam and Eve” by Mark Twain. Or enjoy downtown Pensacola’s lovingly restored Saenger Theatre, where this year’s schedule spans the gamut from Jerr y Seinfeld to Riverdance to Pensacola’s acclaimed Symphony Orchestra . Several popular art galleries located in downtown Pensacola participate in multiple Galler y Nights that draw thousands of people who sip wine and enjoy music as they cruise through shops and restaurants. When you study the art, you will see that many of the pieces capture the beauty and serenity of Perdido Key.

Interesting Facts about the key Did you know that the sugary-white sand found on Perdido Key is actually fine quartz that over time has eroded from granite in the Appalachian Mountains? The sand is carried by rivers and creeks and deposited on our shore. The Key has some of the purest, whitest sand anywhere in the state of Florida. Its dazzling crystals are nearly pure quartz, resulting in soft, fluffy sand that is a pleasure to walk on. • A portion of the Key is off-limits to development because it is home to the Perdido Key beach mouse, which is on the list of endangered species and is only found on Perdido Key. The small, nocturnal mouse is seldom seen; its white-gray fur lets it stay comfortably out of sight. Scientists say the mouse somehow survives storms and predators but could be wiped out if its habitat were developed into homes or businesses. • Lost Key Golf Course, on Perdido Key, is the first Audubon International member to become a Certified Silver Audubon Signature Sanctuary. The site’s dominant ecological communities include pine flatwoods, salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. In addition to the preexisting 50 acres of wetlands, newly created wetlands are managed to maximize biological diversity. The dominant plant community on the property is largely contiguous forest wetland.

7 Things to Do on the Key for Pure Romance Some couples love the excitement of exploring our island; some dream of kicking back on our sun-drenched beaches, and still others desire an outdoor adventure—to hike, kayak or bike ride. With our dazzling sand, refreshing waters and abundant sunshine, Perdido Key beckons to those in love. Whether you’re looking for a secluded escape, posh pampering or a cozy coastal day, here are seven ways to make your alone time in Perdido Key truly memorable. 1. Take a dinner cruise on a Catamaran on the Gulf of Mexico. Your captain will do all the work—and you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning views. 2. Rent a pair of stand-up paddle boards and slowly explore the coastline of Perdido Key together. 3. TAKE A MOONLiT STROLL ON THE BEACH as the moon rises over the horizon. Bring a blanket and watch the stars come out. The night sky over Perdido Key is beautiful. 4. Volunteer to guard a sea turtle nest during hatching season; you may be there when hundreds of tiny babies head towards the sea, guided by the light of the moon. Unforgettable! 5. Get up REALLY early and head to the beach to watch the sun rise over the water. Then look for seashells and sand dollars that have washed up on the shore overnight. 6. Relax over an intimate dinner and glass of wine overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. You’ll see a variety of boats heading into and away from the Key. 7. Strap yourselves down and go tandem parasailing— it’s twice the fun!
