Calling all bookworms and bibliophiles! Pensacola’s Books By the Bay Festival (BBB) is back for its second year of reading, writing and literary entertainment in historic downtown Pensacola.
Hosted by Emerald Coast Writers (ECW), this annual outdoor festival brings authors, readers and book lovers together in an engaging family-friendly atmosphere.
The inaugural BBB Festival was held in 2024, with more than 1,100 authors and literary lovers in attendance. This year, BBB will return to the streets of downtown Pensacola on March 29, bringing a day of literary fun to children and adults of all ages.
BBB will be held in and around Museum Plaza, including the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center and the J. Earle Bowden Building in downtown Pensacola.
At the festival, attendees can meet and greet with numerous notable and best-selling authors, participate in literary exhibitors and author signings, enjoy stage performances and book readings, participate in literary-themed activities and more.
This year’s festival is set to feature nearly 100 authors, more
than 40 literary exhibitors and presentations by two awardwinning authors.
As a nonprofit organization, BBB is run solely by volunteers and members of ECW. The tremendous success of last year’s BBB event helped put Northwest Florida on the map for book lovers.
“We are on the Writer’s Digest event page for book festivals, and then early on in the year, we got picked up by an online magazine that touted Pensacola as being the fourth top place in the US to go for book lovers, and they talked a lot about our festival being one of the reasons. Then, that got picked up by MSNBC and a few other online venues,” BBB Event Director and ECW President Tonya Dalhaus explained.
Thanks to this publicity, BBB has gained the attention of authors and bookworms from across the country, with some of this year’s authors traveling from places like New Hampshire, Illinois, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Georgia, to name a few.
The main activities at BBB are the readings and the book signings at the Author’s Tent. Throughout the day, attendees will also have a chance to hear readings from 16 notable authors representing a variety of different genres; from
Fantasy and Mystery to Non-Fiction and more. Readings will be held from 12:30 to 3 pm in the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center. Children’s book readings will also be held at the J. Earle Bowden Building from 1 to 2 pm.
In the Author’s Tent, fans will have the opportunity to meet with some of their favorite or soonto-be-favorite authors, purchase books and get them signed.
With nearly 100 authors signing books and meeting with fans, the Author’s Tent will host a series of book signings throughout the day, where authors will rotate in and out of the tent every two to four hours. which will rotate every 2 to 4 hours. The full Author’s Tent schedule, including authors and designated time slots, is available on the BBB website at address booksbythebay.info.
Authors Julie Cantrell and Paul Sinor will be speaking at the festival. Cantrell is a USA Today and New York Times bestselling author. She writes both fiction and nonfiction and is best known for her debut novel, Into the Free.
Sinor is also an accomplished author, screenwriter, producer and retired US Army Lt. Col.. He has worked as a technical advisor on movies such as I Am Legend, the
Transformers series, GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra and more. Sinor will share his screenwriting expertise with BBB attendees through his “Screenwriting 101” workshop at the festival.
Attendees can also enjoy a variety of other family-friendly activities throughout the day, including performances by the African American Heritage Society Readers’ Ensemble, Pensacola High School’s Drama Club and a haiku slam hosted by Northwest Florida poet laureate, Asia Sampson.
Numerous literary exhibitors will also be set up at the event, offering attendees a chance to shop for new reads, book-lover merchandise and more. Some of this year’s exhibitors include publishers, authors, creators, artists and more. In addition to the literary fun, local food trucks will be on-site dishing up tasty bites to fuel hungry bookworms.
“We also have a collaboration exhibit with Wide Angle Photo Club. We do this event with them called Picture Me a Story, where our writers will present them with different pieces of work that they will have to illustrate with their photography. That will be on display in the Bowden Building,” Dalhaus said.
BBB is a family-friendly event, and there a plenty of activities to keep kids entertained. The Children’s Activity Center, located in the Bowden Building, will offer a variety of engaging activities including arts and crafts, opportunities to read and listen to readings and an activity that teaches kids how to read and perform poetry. BBB has partnered with local nonprofit ReadyKids! to create a bookmark-making station for the children and their families to enjoy.
Whether you’re a bibliophile or a casual reader, BBB is a great opportunity to expand your literary horizons and find something new to read.
“I am so passionate about this organization and the people in it. It’s just a phenomenal organization. Everybody is so hard working, and everybody gives their all. It’s been very refreshing to be working alongside such a tremendous team of people,” Dalhaus said.
BBB runs from 10 am to 4 pm at Museum Plaza, located at 300 S. Tarragona St. in downtown Pensacola. For more information on the festival, visit booksbythebay.info. To learn more about ECW, visit emeraldcoastwritersinc.org. Follow @BooksByTheBayFestival on Facebook for potential updates.■

LAKEVIEW CENTER NAMES KIM MCQUAIG TEAM MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Kim McQuaig, family support technician, has been named Lakeview Center’s Team Member of the Year. With 18 years of experience, her passion for helping families navigate difficult circumstances shines through in every interaction.
McQuaig provides in-home services to families referred by the Department of Children and Families (DCF), working to prevent cases of child abuse and neglect so children can remain safely with their families. By helping families maintain stable housing, securing emergency aid and connecting them with essential resources, she plays a critical role in strengthening family stability and preventing crises.
“I work to make sure families have what they need to keep their children safe,” McQuaig explained. “If a parent faces an urgent issue—like losing power in winter— I help find a solution.”
Tia Guidry, administrator for Lakeview Center of Walton County, described McQuaig as someone who truly embodies the organization’s mission. “Kim works tirelessly to help families overcome barriers. Her goal every day is to make a difference.”
McQuaig’s exceptional efforts during the holiday season show her compassion for those served by Lakeview Center. She collaborated with churches, schools and government agencies to fulfill children’s
Christmas wish lists, securing donations like toys, bicycles and clothing. “The holidays can be stressful for parents,” McQuaig said. “Helping ease that burden makes all the hard work worth it.”
Her efforts led to more than $16,000 in food and gift donations, supporting not just her own department but also Lakeview Center’s Women and Children’s Center and the Community Action Team. “Thanks to Kim, we exceeded our fundraising goal,” Guidry shared.
McQuaig’s impact extends beyond the families she serves; she is also a mentor and source of encouragement for her peers. Always leading by example, she selflessly volunteers her time to support both her coworkers and the community, spreading kindness and creating a ripple effect of positivity wherever she goes.
When she learned she had been chosen as Team Member of the Year, McQuaig was stunned. “I was shocked! So many amazing people could have been chosen.” For those who work alongside her, the recognition came as no surprise.

Our camp wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of local sponsors, allowing us to offer this opportunity free to all participants. We’re hopeful for an influx of applications and can’t wait to welcome the next generation of young leaders at HERricane Escambia 2025." What is HERricane?
HERricane is a girls’ summer camp to help rethink and improve outreach and engagement around emergency preparedness. The HERricane program was launched in Arlington, Va. in 2017 and has expanded throughout the United States since then. HERricane empowers women to pursue careers and leadership roles in emergency management through a week-long “camp,” and includes long-term professional development opportunities. Its mission is to develop and elevate women as leaders in emergency management and related careers while expanding the image of these professions as a positive force for improving public safety and government. Eligibility
This program is open to young girls living in Escambia County who will be entering grades 7-9 for the 2025-2026 school year.
How to Apply
Interested students should download, print and complete the application. Applications can also be picked up from the Escambia County Public Safety building, located at 6575 N. "W" St., Pensacola, FL 32505. View and print the application here.
How to Submit Your Application Applications for HERricane must be filled out by hand using a blue or black ink pen and should not be completed by a parent/guardian. To submit your application, please mail or drop off applications at the Escambia County Public Safety building, located at 6575 N. "W" St., Pensacola, FL 32505. Office hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Applicants may also scan the completed application and email it to HERricane@MyEscambia.com.
Why Should You Join HERricane?
To ensure that young women in Escambia County become energized about the impacts they can make in a world of emergencies and disasters. The emergency management field is evolving after every hurricane, wildfire and almost every major incident. Therefore, it’s imperative that we continue to evolve how we talk about preparedness and how we engage with our communities, including youth. This program is an investment into the future leaders of our community. Here are four facts to think about:
Underrepresentation: Women are underrepresented in leadership positions in Emergency Management across the nation.
Professional Awareness: Emergency Management, as a profession, is often “hidden” and awareness about it as a career is low.
Employment Opportunities: Careers in public safety are anticipated to grow 8% in the next decade.
Women are Disaster Victims: The United Nations Development Programme recognizes that women are disproportionately affected by disaster, particularly regarding loss of life, sexual violence, and loss of income.
For any additional questions, please email HERricane@MyEscambia.com.

UF/IFAS DIETITIAN REVEALS HIDDEN LINK BETWEEN NUTRITION, DENTAL HEALTH AND OVERALL WELLNESS
March is National Nutrition Month, an opportunity to reflect on diet and its impact on overall health. A powerful but often-overlooked contributor to diet’s effect on wellness is dental health.
“Sometimes we silo our health and think about nutrition in one place and dental health and overall wellness in other places,” said Laura Acosta, instructional associate professor in the UF/IFAS food science and human nutrition department. “But the truth is, they are all inextricably intertwined.”
Acosta, a dietitian, is among the few higher education nutrition instructors in the country who integrates dental health into her curriculum. Below, she explains the interconnectedness of food, dental health and overall wellness.
What oral diseases are commonly associated with poor nutrition?
Worldwide, about 3.5 billion people suffer from oral disease. The most common issues are tooth decay and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects the structures supporting the teeth, including bone, gums and ligaments, which leads to gum recession.
How can oral diseases cause poor nutrition and poor physical health?
Oral diseases cause pain and tooth loss over time, which make it more difficult to eat and chew efficiently. This potentially leads to decreased nutritional intake and increased risk of malnutrition. Also, chronic infections in the mouth contribute to systemic, or body-wide, inflammation, which can cause protein and muscle breakdown, further limiting chewing efficiency. A common response is to reach for easy-tochew, but not necessarily healthy, foods. It becomes a vicious cycle.
How are oral disease and chronic health conditions connected?
There is a consistent pattern showing the prevalence of certain pathogenic, or disease-causing, bacteria in the mouths of people with major chronic conditions.
Topping the list is Porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacteria most ubiquitously associated with periodontal disease. Individuals with periodontal disease are about twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease, about 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer and about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Their risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is 28% greater, and they are 65% more likely to have sleep apnea. Whether these conditions make individuals more susceptible to periodontal disease or whether periodontal disease increases the risk of these conditions is something we're trying to tease out in the science. But the association does exist, and these are staggering statistics.
What foods and drinks should be avoided?
Starchy, refined carbs like those found in bread, pasta, French fries, crackers, pizza and sugary foods stick to teeth and promote a microbial imbalance and even pathogenic bacteria. And acidic and sugary drinks like fruit juice, coffee and soda degrade tooth enamel and support cavity-causing bacteria. What foods and drinks are beneficial for dental health?
Consider food reminiscent of the Mediterranean diet: whole, minimally processed items with anti-inflammatory effects. That includes fresh fruits and vegetables containing antioxidants and polyphenols, or plant compounds, and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like fatty fish.
But snacking on even healthy foods throughout the day should be avoided because some otherwise smart choices like fruit expose teeth to acid and sugar. Strategize and concentrate beneficial citrus and berries during meals to limit exposure.
Green tea contains a dietary compound called Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, a powerful anti-inflammatory antioxidant with antimicrobial properties. EGCG has been shown to slow down and even prevent recession. It could be an additional tool in the arsenal against oral disease.
ECAT LAUNCHES NEW MICROTRANSIT PILOT PROGRAM
Escambia County Area Transit is excited to announce the launch of FlexTransit, a new Microtransit Pilot Program providing more convenient ECAT fixed route access to all areas and individuals throughout Escambia County. FlexTransit will provide service to currently underserved and unserved residents, using smaller ADA-compliant vehicles in expanded service areas.
FlexTransit's soft launch is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, initially serving existing ECAT paratransit customers before fully launching to the public in fall 2025. Once fully implemented, riders will have access to FlexTransit services that will combine and work with ECAT's fixed route to most efficiently get them to their destination. By putting smaller ADA compliant vehicles in expanded service areas, FlexTransit will keep the larger fixed route buses on the major corridors with increased frequency. This program is not intended to replace paratransit services. However, the Microtransit Pilot Program will reduce the need for paratransit services by bridging gaps and connecting riders with the fixed route services during regular fixed route service hours.
Once fully operational, the Microtransit Pilot Program will be available to all county riders and will not be restricted by paratransit eligibility requirements, under the following guidelines:
• Service must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance and no more than 7 days in advance, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. by calling 850-471-6657. Riders also have the ability to schedule trips through the FlexTransit Application or online portal as well as leaving a voicemail for the reservationists.
As part of the Microtransit Pilot Program launch, Escambia County Area Transit is implementing changes to transportation services for riders experiencing transportation barriers and riders with disabilities, in an effort to improve efficiencies and ensure the services are being provided to eligible individuals.
ECAT currently provides two transportation programs for eligible individuals: The Transportation Disadvantaged Program and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Complementary Paratransit Service.
These transportation programs will continue to operate within state and federal guidelines, with some modifications to ensure the services are provided to individuals who qualify. These changes will not only help the paratransit programs operate more efficiently, but also reduce excess costs associated with providing rides to individuals who are able to use ECAT’s fixed-route bus service.
The average contractual cost for a oneway trip using the Transportation Disad -
vantaged Program in fiscal year 2023-2024 was $42.44, making ECAT’s fixed-route bus service a much more cost-effective option for Escambia County. Individuals who are able to use the service pay a fare of $3.50 (ADA) or $2.50 (TD), each trip.
Effective April 2025, the programs will continue to operate under the following guidelines: Transportation Disadvantaged Program
The Transportation Disadvantaged Program is a coordinated state-wide effort that groups riders together for a shared ride service. Federal, State, and Local agencies join together to provide necessary transportation to medical appointments, employment, educational, and other life-sustaining services. The Transportation Disadvantaged Program is a “last resort” program for individuals in need of transportation who do not have access to any other transportation resource. This program is provided only when the recipient has no other transportation means available to them, such as family, friends, or ECAT fixed-route service. To qualify, applicants must meet the current Federal Poverty Level Guidance of 125%, which is verified during the application process.
Transportation Disadvantaged service hours are Monday through Saturday from 8:01 p.m. to 4:59 a.m.
The Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) Program in Florida is funded by the Transportation Disadvantaged Trust Fund, which is administered by the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged (CTD). The CTD is a policy-setting board that oversees and coordinates TD services statewide.
• Service must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance with no more than 7 days in advance, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. by calling 850-471-6657. Riders also have the ability to schedule trips through the FlexTransit Application or online portal as well as leaving a voicemail for the reservationists.
ADA Complementary Paratransit Service
To be eligible for ADA Paratransit, one must have a disability that prevents the individual from independently using ECAT’s fixed route buses for trips.
Rides are scheduled on a first-come, firstserve basis and are subject to the vehicle capacity limits.

MIKE PAPANTONIO UNVEILS
EXPLOSIVE NEW LEGAL THRILLER THE MIDDLEMAN
Whistleblowers, Big Pharma Corruption, and a Battle for Justice—Inspired by Real Cases Renowned trial lawyer and best-selling author Mike Papantonio is pulling back the curtain on one of the pharmaceutical industry’s most shadowy players with the release of his latest legal thriller, The Middleman The novel delivers a high-stakes drama of whistleblowers, murder, and legal warfare— ripped straight from today’s headlines.
The Middleman is available now at major bookstores and online retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Inspired by 40 Years of Battling Big Pharma in Court In The Middleman , readers follow Nicholas Deketomis, a powerhouse attorney taking on Connor Devlin, the ruthless CEO of a pharmaceutical empire. Devlin, a composite of executives Papantonio has encountered in his decades of courtroom battles, is modeled after a different kind of mobster—the kind wearing designer suits and Ivy League credentials.
“The PBM is getting paid to set the price and to say to that manufacturer, ‘If you don’t play ball with me, you’re not going to end up on the list. It’s basically extortion,” Mike Papantonio, attorney and author, wrote in The Middleman Papantonio, a Hall of Fame trial lawyer, has made a career out of exposing corporate corruption. He and his firm, Levin Papantonio, have gone head-to-head with nearly every major drug company, securing victories in landmark cases from Fen-Phen to opioids. Now, his legal sights are set on one of Big Pharma’s most insidious players: pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs)—the middlemen of the drug industry.
"The concept of Pharmacy Benefit Managers, or PBMs, is not something most people are familiar with," says Papantonio. "They hear the term but have no idea how much it's interfering with healthcare in America."
PBMs, which determine drug pricing and access, have been widely criticized for skyrocketing prescription costs—particularly for life-saving medications like insulin. Understanding the PBM Villain PBMs act as middlemen between drug manufacturers, pharmacies, and insurance companies—controlling which medications are covered and how much they cost. According to Papantonio, PBMs operate like corporate extortionists, taking kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies in exchange for placing their drugs on approved insurance lists. This system artificially inflates drug prices, limiting access to cheaper, equally effective alternatives.
“The PBM is getting paid to set the price and to say to that manufacturer, ‘If you don’t play ball with me, you’re not going to end up on the list,’” Papantonio explains. “It’s basically extortion.”
By manipulating the market for profit, PBMs don’t just drive up prescription costs— they also force independent pharmacies out of business.
With The Middleman , Papantonio once again delivers a powerful, fast-paced legal thriller that doesn’t just entertain—it exposes. Plot: Whistleblowers, Insulin Pricing, and Murder
Nicholas “Deke” Deketomis and his law firm take on America’s Big Pharma when Deke’s college pal, Matt Redmond, presents him with a case of possible fraud involving EirePharma, the Redmond family business and a powerful Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM). PBMs serve as the “middlemen” between drug manufacturers and insurance companies, working in cryptic ways to determine not only the cost of drugs but also placing them on insurers’ preferred formularies. EirePharma was recently taken over by the charismatic CEO, Connor Devlin, who has a Rasputin-like influence over Matt’s cousin, Amy, the company’s current president. Devlin may be utilizing racketeering practices—and perhaps murder—to raise the prices of insulin and other drugs for his own profit and to the detriment of consumers.
Amy, who at first was in love with Devlin, decides—at great peril—to become her company’s whistleblower and provide evidence to Deke and his team. When key witnesses and even Redmond family members meet mysterious and violent deaths, Amy finds herself a pawn caught in the center of a frightening and deadly game of wills between a formidable gangster, who in the eyes of the public is a respected businessman, and a law firm that is determined to investigate and uncover the Middleman’s crimes.
In the tradition of Suspicious Activity and Inhuman Trafficking, Papantonio takes Deke and his cohorts on a new and different kind of legal gamble in The Middleman , which is chock full of the action and thrills for which he is known.
Where to Buy The Middleman
Hardcover copies and Kindle versions of The Middleman can be ordered online or purchased in major bookstores across the country.

"Insulin, which costs pharmaceutical companies $2 to produce, is being sold for $270," Papantonio says. "There are cases where they mark up pharmaceuticals by 5,000%, and people are left making impossible choices—take insulin or buy groceries?"
The Middleman takes this real-world crisis and transforms it into a gripping, actionpacked novel that underscores a stark reality: Corporate greed in the pharmaceutical industry isn’t far removed from organized crime.
"I've been handling pharmaceutical cases for 40 years, and every time I walk away from one, I ask myself: What’s the difference here?" Papantonio says. "Why is a company able to sell opioids the same way mobsters sell cocaine—but the drug dealer on the street goes to prison, while the CEO gets rich?"
Besides his growing work of legal thrillers, Papantonio has also penned non-fiction books, particularly those exploring legal and political issues. Some of his notable works include In Search of Atticus Finch: A Motivational Book for Lawyers (1996); Clarence Darrow, the Journeyman (1997); and Resurrecting Aesop: Fables Lawyers Should Remember (2000). These books offer insights into the legal profession and are treated as required reading in some law schools.
Papantonio is also widely known as the founder, former host, and legal commentator of the nationally syndicated radio show "Ring of Fire" (ROF). He is the host of “America’s Lawyer,” a program on ROF’s YouTube channel, which has over 1 million subscribers. On “America’s Lawyer,” Papantonio provides in-depth investigations into major corporate and government corruption.
